A remarkable community turnout on Saturday, June 25 filled every seat in the Historic Theater with bags of food to help feed kids in need this summer.
This was second year that The Music Hall partnered with the Seacoast Family Food Pantry to collect food donations for its Summer Meals 4 Kids program—and this year, it was also the date of The Music Hall Community Open House with complimentary Historic and Tech Tours of the 1878 theater, selfie photo ops up on stage, and a free afternoon family movie.
The historic design and magical atmosphere of the 1878 theater lent a special vibe to the day, as the red velvet seats got covered with bags of food.
Many Music Hall and SFFP staff, board members, volunteers, and other community activists contributed to the success and good cheer of this exceptional day. “For me, this event is most significant because it really does bring the community out for the cause,” says Seacoast Family Food Pantry Executive Director Deb Anthony. “The other thing it speaks to, is that when you make it obvious to a community like Portsmouth and the Seacoast what is needed, people will respond. That is what is special about living here, and special about doing business here.”
Adds community activist Denise Wheeler, “The combination of our historic cultural icon, The Music Hall, and the community-driven Seacoast Family Food Pantry—celebrating its 200th anniversary this year— creates a grand vision that stirs the public to action. The public responds to the dynamism of these two venerable institutions working together.”

This fall, our beloved Writers on a New England Stage Series, that produced in partnership with New Hampshire Public Radio, is featuring three best selling authors. This September, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer will be making his Music Hall debut with his book The Court and the World, where he looks at how the United States Supreme Court’s rulings impact the rest of the world as well as how the rest of the world impacts the Court. Examining issues such as national security, human rights, and copyright protection Justice Breyer provides an invaluable understanding for lawyers and non-lawyers alike.
In October, Jodi Picoult returns with her newest book Small Great Things. The beloved author of thought provoking books such as My Sister’s Keeper and Nineteen Minutes will be discussing her new novel about racism, a newborn’s life and death in a rural Connecticut hospital, and a devastating court case.

Award winning chef, bestselling author, and beloved TV personality, Mario Batali comes to the Historic Theater this November with his new cookbook Big American Cookbook: 250 Favorite Recipes from Across the USA. The larger than life, orange croc wearing, chef brings together some of the very best recipes from around the country to celebrate the best of America’s cuisine. Ranging from the specific BBQ styles of Texas, Kansas City, Memphis, and the Carolinas, the many variations of chowder along the northeastern coast, to the sweet takes on berry pies in the Pacific northwest, this cookbook will take you on a culinary journey across state lines and cultures.
