Writers on a New England Stage Turns 10: An Inside Look at the Beloved Literary Series
A decade ago, Executive Director Patricia Lynch created Writers on a New England Stage, a new take on a literary series; one that included readings, interviews, rock and roll, inquiry, entertainment, and Public Radio. Lynch forged a partnership with Betsy Gardella, President and CEO of New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR), to broadcast these innovative events. To date we have welcomed more than 63 literary legends and acclaimed authors of every genre, all paired with the music from our house band Dreadnaught led by Bob Lord, and interviewed by NHPR’s Virginia Prescott, host of "Word of Mouth." The opportunity to create a signature series that stimulates the kind of creative thinking which comes from reading and listening to stories and histories, has been both humbling and aweinspiring. As a writer myself, I personally have grown because of my exposure to great thinkers and writers and I know that I'm not alone. The last ten years have been like playing in the world's best sandbox. I have a fistful of transformative, funny, and moving backstage stories that all happened in the dim light before or after the show. I am so grateful to all those on our team and the team at NHPR who make this all possible, and to the audiences that have embraced the magic of Writers on a New England Stage for the past decade.

I’ve learned that being interviewed opens up vulnerability in even the most celebrated writers. My goal is to explore their unpolished parts by letting my own uncertainty be present on-stage. I research, but stay curious. I lean on silence, which gives permission for something unexpected to emerge. Staying on that edge encourages thoughtfulness and avoids rote answers. I’ve been inspired by everyone I’ve talked to in some way— from Sue Monk Kidd’s frank discussion of growing up in the segregated South, to Anne Rice wrestling with Catholicism while having a gay son, to the humor that Neil Gaiman and Salman Rushdie showed while addressing huge questions confronting our culture and our world. Their creativity is a gift to us all.

What strikes me working with authors is the challenge they face taking the stage, the bravery of turning their private thoughts—their beliefs, research, fictional characters and fanciful plots—first, into a book, and then into presentation. By celebrating these courageous authors and their brilliantly created works, we give voice to American culture today. Tracy Kidder brings to life the modern-day hero Dr. Paul Farmer. John Irving paints a vivid portrait of personal freedom. BJ Novak takes us to Las Vegas with 20-somethings, and, with David McCullough, we meet America’s first artists and inventors in 19th Century Paris. Now this is education at its best!

Our goal is to put a smile on the faces of the authors and audiences through music. Over the last 10 years there have been many special moments and we’re lucky enough to have the best seats in the house. Images burned in my memory include Alan Alda whipping around and shooting us a thumbs up with the audience on its feet going wild, and Madeleine Albright jumping on the drum kit backstage. My personal favorite was when Dan Brown played piano with us on barnstorming versions of “Happy Birthday” and “Birthday” by the Beatles for his mother, who was in the audience.
