BADEN-POWELL MIDDLE SCHOOL HANDBELL TEAM, SOUTHAMPTON Director: Donald Nutter Changes C-G Autumn Bells Over the Rainbow

Anon Arlen, arr. Edwards-Hill Handbell-ringing began in the school as an extracurricular activity seven years ago when a parental donation enabled a two-octave chromatic set to be bought. Team members are chosen from auditioned volunteers and to provide continuity of experience the team usually comprises fourth and third year children with one second year. The team performs in schools and churches, local charitable and musical events, competes successfully in local musical festivals and participates in area and national rallies of the National Association for Handbell Ringing Teams. After gaining an "Outstanding Performance Award" in the Junior section at the National Festival the Schools Prom crowns a wonderful year for the children's loyalty and dedication and marks sadly the final ringing occasion for this present team as seven children transfer to secondary schools this autumn. The programme comprises: "Changes C-G", an example of change ringing as on church tower bells; a smart fast tune - '~utumn Bells" - and the haunting tune from the evergreen film "Wizard of Oz" - "Over the Rainbow".

Program111e Notes BERGEN QUINTET, LONDON Tutor: Sheila Ne/son Quintet in 0, K. 593 (1st movement) W A, Mozar! The Bergen Quintet made friends on a trip to Bergen, Norway five years ago. They were members of a larger group of Sheila Nelson's pupils taking part in demonstration workshops and concerts, and they have regularly taken part in chamber music together since then. They now meet in the senior Cromwell group and although the members have played at the Schools Prom before, this is their first appearance as a chamber group at senior level. Quintet in 0, K. 593 (1st movement) W A, Mowr! The Quintet in 0, K.593 is a late work and one of Mozart's great masterpieces, Two complete versions exist of the last movement, and of part of the third movement, indicating that the work was particularly important to Mozart himself. Only the finest music could follow the opening larghetto, with its pensive cello questions answered by the choir of upper instruments. After just twenty bars the players break into an exuberant allegro, building an intricate tracery of dotted rhythms and triplet passages, Each player takes an equally prominent part, requiring considerable technical skill as well as musical understanding. The music is interrupted near the end by a reminiscence of the opening larghetto, and is brought to a finish by a final flourish of the main allegro theme.

BOLTON YOUTH CONCERT BAND

CENTRAL BERKSHIRE FLUTE

Conductor: Nige/ M, Taylor Fanfare and National Anthem arr. Nigel Taylor Festivo Edward Gregson Stars & Stripes Forever f. Philip Sousa Fonned in 1975, the Bolton Youth Concert Band comprises over 60 players aged 11-19 years, and is a major ensemble of Bolton Music Centre. The Band has gained several awards at concert band festivals held in Solihull, St. Helens and Worsley, as well as being invited to perform in the National Festival of Music for Youth at the Royal Festival Hall, London, four years in succession, 1983186. In March 1985, the Band won first prize in the open section of the National Concert Band Festival held in London, winning the TV Times Trophy and the R. SmithlJensen New Commission Award, The Bolton Youth Concert Band also reached the National Concert Band Festival finals in 1986, 1987 and 1988 being Northern Area winners on all three occasions, As well as establishing itself as one of the premier youth wind ensembles in Britain the Bolton Youth Concert Band has a growing reputation abroad having toured Belgium, France, Luxembourg, West Germany and Holland where, in 1985, they gained First Prize in the World Contest held at Kerkrade. The Band is proud to have as its President, Sir Charles Groves CB.E. and among its Vice Presidents, the composers Guy Woolfenden and Edward Gregson whose work "Festivo" (commissioned by the Bolton Youth Concert Band with funds provided by the TSB) is among the items on tonight's programme.

Conductor: Simon Salisbury La Garde Montante G, Bize!, arr. Nourse Community Swinging Jelle Hogenhuis The Central Berkshire Flute Ensemble is one of the senior woodwind groups of the Central Berkshire Music Centre. Based in Reading the Music Centre provides weekly instrumental, choral and general musicianship classes for its seven hundred members aged between three and a half and eighteen years. The Flute Ensemble was formed three years ago to provid e chamber music experience for the increasing number of able flautists in the area. It comprises ten players aged between fo urteen and eighteen years who play on a variety of different flutes piccolos, concert flutes, alto flutes and bass flutes with the addition of piano and synthesizer for some of the lighter compositions. This is the ensemble's first appearance at the Schools Prom. Le Garde Montante G. Bize!, arr. Nourse La Garden Montante is taken from Bizet's famous opera "Carmen", which was composed in 1873-4. In this transcription, the original distant trumpet that heralds the procession is played by an offstage flute. Community Swinging Jelle Hogenhuis This lighthearted piece for piccolo and flutes is further enhanced by the use of piano and synthesizer with pre-programmed drum beat. The flute ensemble is fortunate in having a number of extremely proficient keyboard players which enable it to explore a greater diversity of repertoire.

Progra111111e Notes CHELMSFORD COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS

CROMWELL JUNIOR QUARTET, LONDON

DANE COURT ORCHESTRA, B ROAD STAIRS

Tutor: Patricia Beckett Septet in E flat, Op. 20 (1st movement)

Tutor: Sheila Nelson String Quartet, Op. 20 No. 2 (1st movement) J. F. Haydn The members of Cromwell junior Quartet belong to a larger mUSic-making group known as the Sunday Noon Group, which meets each weekend at Sheila Nelson's house. Several members of the very first Sunday Noon Group to perform at the Schools Prom are now earning their living as professional musicians, but this is not the primary aim of the group system. It is rath er to encourage joint musicmaking (singing as well as playing) as a social pastime for players of various standards. The groups are arranged by age more than technical standard, so tha t sets of friends can move together through the system. Fortunately, it is possible (not witll0ut a str uggle) to find chamber music to suit almost any combination of technical development.

Conductor: Cam} Firth Caravan Duke El/iugtoll, arr. PloyarlFirth Evening Breeze Ken Whitcol1lb, arr. Firth Summer Time in Venice Carl Signwu, arr. PloyarlFirth I Want to Hold your Hand Lennoll & McCartney, an. Firth All members of the orchestra attend Dane Court School, Broadstairs and this is their first performance at the Schools Prom.

Lllrlwig van Beethoven

Music plays an important part in the life of the pupils of Chelmsford County High School which has two choirs, two orchestras, a wind band, a jazz band and numerous vocal and instrumental groups. All members of th e septet are in the Essex Youth Orchestra and Annabel, the cellist, is a member of the National Youth Orchestra. The school received Outstanding Performance Awards in both the Junior and Senior categories of the Chamber Music section at the National Festival of Music for Youth. The junior Piano Trio performed in the final s concert of Chamber Music for Schools at St. john's, Smith Square and the Senior Chamber group have performed for BBC Essex. School musicians have taken part in the Chelmsford Cathedral Festival and during the year have raised n1any hundreds of pounds for national and local charities. Their first orchestra was fortunate to take part in a workshop given by the "London Musici" and they are indebted to Howard Davis of th e Alberni Quartet for his help and encouragement. Septet in E flat, Op. 20 Ost movement) Ludwig van Beethoven Nearly all of Beethoven's works for wind ensemble and chamber music which include parts for wind instruments, were composed in the early part of his career. The septet was first performed in Vienna in 1800.

String Quartet, Op. 20 No. 2 (1st movement) J. F Haydll Haydn's Quartet opus 20 no.2 is one of seven great quartets in C major, his favourite key for the medium. It gives special prominence to the cellist at a time when Haydn was moving aWilY fro m the dominating first violin parts of the early quartets. The opening theme is announced on the cello accompanied by second violin and viola, and immediately re-stated by a trio consisting of the three upper parts. Although the movement is basically lyrical, it passes through so me stormy moments. In the development section especially, a virtuoso second violin part lends a feeling of excitement and unrest to the fierce exchanges between first violin and cello. Calm is restored by a reference to the lyrical first subject, this time on the viola.

Over the past four years the orchestra has played numerous concerts around this country and abroad. In 1986 Dane Court Orchestra toured California for three weeks playing six concerts in various cities including Palm Springs, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Tijuana in Mexico. One of the highlights of the tour was a concert in Disneyland. The orchestra is planning another USA tour in the near future. Dane Court Orchestra practises once each week after school for two hours plus sectionals and occasional weekend rehearsals. In addition to the senior orchestra at Dane Court there are several other ensembles including bands, choirs, string orchestras, jazz ensemble and various chamber groups which meet each week. In the past year the orchestra has added saxophones and a rhythm section to what was hitherto a "classical" orchestra. This has increased the variety of music which the orchestra has in its repertoire to include other styles of music in addition to the more "classical" repertoire associated with school and youth orchestras. Caravan DlIke Ellingtoll, a/'/'. PloyarlFirth This arrangement of a very popular Duke Ellington number features percussion and bass clarinet and is marked by dynamic contrast. Evening Breeze Ken Whitcol1lb, al'r. Firth This sleazy number is full of chromaticism and colourful chord sequences around which the solo trumpet enjoys both melodic and rhythmic freedom. Summer Time in Venice Carl Sigl1la//, arr. PloyarlFirth A light-hearted number whose tune is better known than the title. Melodic interest is passed around the orchestra. I Want to Hold your Hand Lenllon & McCartllrlj. an-. Firth One of the best known Beatles hits of the sixties provides a dynami c climax to the programme.

EDLINGTON COLLEGIATE JAZZ ORCHESTRA

HARROW STUDENTS' PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

Musical Director: Mark Hird The Last Dive Matt Harris Fascinating Rhythm arr. Sammy Nestico The Way We Were arr. John Higgins Bad Michael Jackson , arr. Paul Lavender Edlington Collegiate Jazz Orchestra was formed just one year ago by its musical director Mark Hird, in response to a desire to tackle more demanding modern jazz arrangements. The twenty-two-strong band evolved from the music department of Edlington Comprehensive School, near Doncaster, where Mr Hird is head of performing arts. Over the last three years, jazz and wind bands from the school have enjoyed considerable success at the National Festival of Music for Youth, receiving three Highly Commended Awards and being represented at last year's Schools Prom by the dixie group "Four by Four". This is the first appearance of the full orchestra at the Schools Prom. Supported by Don Valley Institute of Further Education, the jazz orchestra forms a pioneering evening class open to senior school musicians as well as catering for recent schoolleavers who want to continue playing jazz. The Band meets weekly to rehearse. At Easter this year the players took part in a concert tour of Budapest as part of a new cultural exchange with a Hungarian School. Tonight's programme includes Michael Jackson's hit "Bad" which has been arranged for the group by Paul Lavender.

Conductor: Adrian P. Brown An American in Paris George Gershwin Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 Edward EIgar - "Land of Hope and Glory" The Harrow School for Young Musicians is supported by the London Borough of Harrow. It is open to any young person resident in the borough. The School comprises a variety of orchestras, bands and a choir. The groups meet together weekly and all the School's orchestras and bands and its choir give at least one public concert each year. The Philharmonic Orchestra gives major concerts in Harrow and has recently toured Brittany, Germany and Salzburg under Adrian Brown who has been its conductor for twelve years. The orchestra has worked with many different soloists including Philip Langridge, Ralph Holmes and Anna Markland, and has had Sir Colin Davis and Sir Charles Groves as guest conductors. Last March, the entire Music School gave an "Extravaganza" in the Royal Albert Hall. An American in Paris George Gershwin This assured work was first played in New York in 1928 and contains some wonderful variety of expression. Deep sentiment and soulful jazz goes hand in hand with some astonishingly brash music. It is constructed rather like a movie as it cuts from paragraph to paragraph of ideas. Pomp and Circumstance Edward Elgar March No. 1 - "Land of Hope and Glory"

The Pomp and Circumstance marches are a series of five military marches in symphonic form. The first march is now best known because of its link with the words "Land of Hope and Glory". This link came about when Elgar used both the words and music in his Coronation Ode to commemorate the Coronation of Edward VII. A hybrid it may be, but it never fails to stir the patriotic fervour associated with it.

Programme Notes KENT YOUTH WIND ORCHESTRA Musical Director: Jeffrey Vaughan-Ma rtil1 Fanfare and National Anthem arr. Cordon Jacob Festive Overture Dimitri Slwstakovich, arr. D. HUl1sberger Delta Dances Suite (River Song) Kel1neth Plaits (New Orleans Can Can) The Kent Youth Wind Orchestra was formed in W76 by its Musical Director )effrey Vaughan-Martin. The eighty-two play rs are chosen from pupils in Kent schools and colleges and range in age from twelve to eighteen ye~rs. Whilst some w.ill evenltlally become professional musicians, either as performers or teacher , for the majority music ma king will continue to provide a major source of enjoyment as a leisure activity. Rehearsals take place during each of the holiday breaks ~n d in addition on three weekends during lhe year. Each year thirteen new players join the band to take the place of those leaving for college and university. Kent Youth Wind Orchestra maintains a busy programme of courses and concerts and has toured every two years since 1982 playing to capacity audiences as far apart as Toronto, Canada and Debrecen, Hungary. Over the past four years they have been pleased to perform at major music centres in London, Manchester and Warwick. The group's style and level of attainment has been widely recognised by discerning audiences and critics, both in this country and overseas.

Dimitri Shostakovich, arr. D. Hunsberger Shostakovich's earlier career as a composer was one of conflict between his more ambitious instincts as an inheritor of the European tradition, much influenced by Mahler and his role as understood within Stalinist Russia. This reflected in the styles of his works - some personal in quality, some functional. as in the case of this overture. Composed in 1954, the Festive Overture was originally written for orchestra. It consists of a long central presto section framed by two much shorter ones. The opening fanfare for trumpets grows into a majestic statement by the whole band, which leads into the presto. Here the composer playfully contrasts and combines bitty, rhythmic ideas with longer legato melodies. The last two sections use material from the opening and central sections. The mood of the overture is indeed festive throughout, contrasting interestingly with the much darker tenth symphony, written a year earlier. Festive Overture

Delta Dances was written in 1980 and attempts to evoke the type of music which would have been heard in the Mississippi Delta region of the United States. The River Song is gently flowing wh ilst New Orleans Can Can is full of raucous high spirits of a big city saloon. The composer, Kenneth Platts, born in India, sl'ud ied composition at th e Royn l College of Music and has achieved anin terna~i tl!la l reputation as a composer of music for young people.

THE LATYMER SCHOOL CHAMBER ORCHESTRA, LONDON Conductor: Susan Collier Divertimento in D major, K. 136 W A. Mozan The Latymer School Chamber Orchestra is compdsed of nineteen pupils whose ages range from twelve to eigh teen. They perform regularly in concert both in and out of school and are no strangers to the National Festival of Music for Youth, having performed there several times in the last few years. For the past few summers the orchestra has toured abroad giving concerts in France, Germany and Italy. This summer, with the Madrigal Group and Senior Wind Ensemble from the school. they gave concerts in Vienna as part of the Vienna International Youth and Music Festival. There they won the Best Chamber Orchestra Award and the iVladrigal Group won the Best Mixed Choir Award. To take part in the Schools Prom is a fitting finale to a fantastic year. Divertimento in D major, K. 136 W A. Mozart This work is often performed as a string quartet, though tonight it is being performed by the larger forces of a chamber orchestra. It is a vibrant and brilliant work in three movements which explores both the virtuosic and the sonorous capabilities "c the string family.

Glover the Tranquil Night Mountain Nights Zolttin Kodtily Choo Choo Charlie G. CunveIl Following four highly successful years of training and conducting young people's choirs at regional and national level, The Lidunian Chorale was founded by its conductor in July 1984, offering a much wider membership and broader scope for performance. Having gained first prize awards at every festival entered regionally, the choir made its debut at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in July 1985 and was placed third in the final of the children's choirs class. In 1986, after many further successes, the choir ventured into the adult field of the competition and was the highest placed British choir in the folk song section, being placed third alongside internationally renowned choirs from Hungary and the USA in addition to receiving the second prize award in the children's class. Since then the choir has extended its appearances at every level and has represented England in the International concert. In July 1988 they were thrilled to be presented with the Outstanding Performance Award in the final of the DES National Choral Competition and second place in the adult choirs section at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod. The average age of the choir is fifteen years. This is the choir's first appearance at a Schools Prom . The programme is intended to portray very different styles of choral singing: I Heard a Voice in the Tranquil Night S. Glover This piece, with its beautiful melodies and contrasting sections, demonstrates the flexibility of the voice in its thrilling imitation of the nightingale's song. Zolttin Kodtily Mountain Nights The title is explained by the music, and expresses the composer's deep love for mountains among which he spent so many enjoyable holidays during his long life. "Mountains", he said, "have their own songs:'

MEXBOROUGH MUSIC CENTRE YOUTH BRASS BAND, DONCASTER

THE MINSTRELS, ATHERSTONE Conductor: MiciJele J. Sand/and

Musical Director: GraiJam O'Connor Mack and MabeI Keith Wilkinson 1812 Overture P I. Tchaikovsky Mexborough Music Centre Brass Band is part of the Doncaster Education Authority that meet for three hours each Saturday morning during school term. The band consists of youngsters from the age of 11-19 years. They come from the outlying districts of Doncaster and their Musical Director is Graham O'Connor, a peripatetic teacher for the Doncaster Authority, a former player with Grimethorpe Colliery Band . Their contesting started in November 1985 at Rochdale winning outright and going on to win at Oldham, Skegness and Preston. They have been asked to play at the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate, the Milk Race at Barnsley and Schools Prom at the Royal Hall, Harrogate. The Band also toured Switzerland in August playing eight concerts in five days starting in Bern Station where the three-tier building came to a standstill - the audiences over there could not understand how youngsters could play as well as they did. They also took all the instruments in a cable car and played on top of Mount Mannlichen which is 7317ft high, an experience they will never forget. It was a very successful tour.

The Call } Bits and Pieces T. R. Sandland Recorder Rondo The Minstrels Recorder Ensemble has been together for three and a half years and was formed when the players were pupils at Baddesley Ensor Middle School. The group made its first appearance at the National Festival of Music for Youth in the summer and was delighted when presented with an Outstanding Performance Award in the Junior Category. The Minstrels have performed in numerous concerts and festivals, locally with great success. The items on tonight's programme were written espeCially for the group by T. R. Sandland who rehearses the group.

Choo Choo Charlie G. CunveIl Written in the jazz idiom the main attraction of this piece is the clever vocalisation of the movements and sounds of the train: great fun both to sing and to listen to.

NORTHAMPTON MUSIC SCHOOL SINFONIA

NORWICH STUDENTS' ORCHESTRA

Conductor: Graham Tear Holberg Suite Edvard Grieg Serenade for Strings (Finale) P I. Tchaikovsky The Northampton Music School Sinfonia was formed five years ago as the "Chamber Orchestra". Most of the original players remain, a tribute to their loyalty and dedication. The orchestra meets weekly and gives four or five concerts a year. Summer camping expeditions have become a feature of the orchestra's activities and they have recently returned from a week under canvas in Pembrokeshire. All members of the Sinfonia are also members of the County Youth Orchestra and two of them the National Youth Orchestra . The Sinfonia entered the National Festival of Music for Youth for the first time this year and so were particularly proud to be awarded the Outstanding Performance Award in the string and chamber orchestra category and are even more delighted to play for the first time in the Schools Prom. Holberg Suite Edva rd Grieg Written by Grieg as a tribute to Ludwig Holberg, the "Moliere" of the North, the "Holberg Suite" is in the style of a Bach keyboard suite. Serenade for Strings (Finale) P I. Tclwikovsky Composed in 1881, this was one of only a few works by Tchaikovsky to achieve instant success. The Finale, subtitled "Tema Russe", is a highspirited Russian burlesque.

Conductor: John Burdett Fanfare and National Anthem arr. William Wnltoll Die Meistersinger von Niimberg Richard Wagller The Norwich Students' Orchestra rehearses weekly during term-time to offer orchestral training usually in the traditional repertoire, but aims to regularly examine contemporary items. Membership is offered to those players of appropriate standard for whom there is a vacancy and players are usually welcomed having progressed through the sequence of ensembles organised for the Norwich Schools by Norfolk LEA. The orchestra usually performs four concerts annually and its members often progress to the County Youth Orchestra. In the 1987/8 season NSO played in Friedrichshafen in West Germany and apart from the customary symphony concerts, accompanied a radio broadcast of the "Messiah". The dloruses (six hundred voices) used the Mozart orchestration whilst the arias were accompanied by the reduced Watkins-Shaw orchestra. The NSO also accompanied the British Federation of Youth Choirs conducted by Norman Del Mar. Die Meistersinger von Niimberg Richard Wagller During his exile from Germany (1848-1866), Wagner used his fame as an orchestral conductor to promote interest in his operas, making concert versions of the operatic overtures. There is evidence that he was working on the overture for Die Meistersinger von Niirnberg as early as 1845 (sketches date from this time). The work was completed in 1862 when it received its first performance at Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Wagner's native town on 10 October. Wagner was not permitted to enter Germany to conduct this first performance. With its imposing brass part writing the overture illustrates how Wagner developed the tuba family, especially at the climax where the tuba holds its own on the bass line under a texture of converging themes.

PAGODA CHINESE YOUTH ORCHESTRA, LIVERPOOL

READING YOUTH ORCHESTRA

Musical Director: Kui Hsiung Li Soloist: Zi Lall Liao Parading the Troops Anon Battling Against the Storm Wang Chu Yung Dance of the Yi Nationality Anon The Frenzy of the Golden Snake NeiRei This is the only Chinese Youth Orchestra in the country. The membership of this thirty-strong orchestra consists mainly of young chinese from the Merseyside area . It is based at the Pagoda Chinese Community Centre in Liverpool and has been developed over the past three years with the support of the parents, the local Chinese community, Liverpool City Council and Merseyside Arts. The aim of the group is to give an opportunity for locally born Chinese children to learn and to understand more about traditional Chinese music - as well as to share that music with others. The soloist, Zi Lan Liao, began to learn the Chinese harp when she was three years old . At the age of nine, she won a major prize in the City of Canton Competition. Three years later she was awarded the second prize in the National Youth Competition of the People's Republic of China. At the age of fifteen, she won the first prize at the Llangollen Music Festival. Zi Lan has been studying the Western harp at Chetham's School of Music for the past three years and is currently attending the Royal Academy of Music in London. This is the orchestra's first appearance at the Schools Prom.

Conductor: Robert Roscoe Night on a Bare Mountain Modeste Mussorgsky Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 Edward Elgar - "Land of Hope and Glory" Reading Youth Orchestra, now in its forty-fourth year, was launched by Humphrey Hare under the auspices of the Berkshire Youth and Community Service and was one of the first youth orchestras in the country. The ages of the musicians range from eleven to eighteen and a central objective of the group is the social as well as musical development of the members who take much responsibility for the organisation. Last year the Orchestra hosted the DiisseldorfYouth Orchestra as part of the Fortieth Anniversary of the Reading-Diisseldorf link. Night on a Bare Mountain Modeste Mussorgsky This piece of vivid programme music was composed in 1867. A total of five versions were written, the final one (being performed today) was reorchestrated by Rimsky-Korsakov, five years after Mussorgsky's death. The music is an impression of a Witches' Sabbath, a popular topic in Russian folklore. It is Midsummer's Eve on Bare Mountain, near Kiev; soft strings set the scene of a quiet, desolate hilltop. A shrill motif from the wind section gives warning of things to come. Trombones announce the emergence of spirits with the first theme heard above a bass drum roll. The Devil appears and the section is repeated a semi-tone higher.

The second theme is a wild dance played by woodwind and strings, broken by a pause to introduce the third theme, depicting the arrival of witches to perform a Black Mass in homage to the Devil. The previous four passages are then repeated. After a sudden crash on tarn-tarn, a tubular bell imitates a distant church bell, signifying the disappearance of the witches and spirits. The strings herald dawn, accompanying a pastoral melody on clarinet, then flute, which suggests a shepherd playing his pipe on the mountain as day breaks on the now peaceful scene. Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 Edward Elgar - "Land of Hope and Glory" The Pomp and Circumstance marches form a series of five military marches for orchestra, four of which date from between 1901 and 1907 and the last from 1930. The celebrated patriotic words of A.C. Benson were added later to the first march in D major for a special Gala Performance given to commemorate the Coronation of Edward VII.

SI. Bede's is a co-educational preparatory school situated on the cliffs at the foot of the downs in Eastbourne. Music plays an important part in the life of the school and all musicians get a chance to perform regularly. The chamber choir was formed six years ago as a select group drawn from the chapel choir. Over the years the numbers have increased from twelve to around thirty which has helped to improve continuity - each year it loses about one third of its members. Rehearsals take place before and after school and at lunchtimes. The choir have sung at concerts and church services around Sussex and as far afield as Norwich . Last summer they visited Buckfast Abbey in Devon for a week-long singing holiday. They have just released their sixth recording called "A Choral Kaleidoscope", the proceeds of which will be given to children's charities. This is the choir's first Schools Prom appearance.

St. David's School Band was formed in 1972. It has a busy programme of concerts, parades and those two most traditional of band activities - fetes and carnivals. The band has visited Germany and Guernsey and has featured on BBC Radio Wales . The Band has been taking part in the National Festival of Music for Youth for a number of years, and though it has appeared at the Royal Festival Hall on three occasions, tonight is its first appearance at a Schools Prom , The band is grateful to the National Festival of Music for Youth for the opportunity it gives to present band music of consequence. Eileen Rowe has seven acoustic pianos.

Eileen Rowe has been teaching the piano for 50 years. Her skills at encouraging pupils to the highest standards are acclaimed throughout the profession. Every week Eileen and her team of teachers cater for 200 children . An incredibly busy timetable. Which is when her Roland Digital Piano comes in. For pupils to loosen up on whilst waiting for their lessons. And there's no compromising their classical training. Roland pianos - in Eileen's case the HP-5600 - provide stunningly realistic sounds, with a key action as touch responsive as the best concert grand. Built-in stereo sound systems include a headphone

socket for silent practice and being digital, a Roland piano never goes out of tune! Eileen's pupils are also learning while they limber up. Courtesy of Roland's PR-100 sequencer. The PR-100, like a recorder, using computer disks instead of tape, is supported by an extensive library of pre-recorded software including Associated Board grade pieces. Linked via MIDI to any Roland piano, its performance facilities allow, for example, users to mute left or right hand parts and - especially helpful for practising difficult pieces - to slow down the tempo without any change in pitch.

Roland call it their Intelligent System of Music. Eileen Rowe simply calls it marvellous.

Progra111111e Notes ST. JOHN'S R.e. COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL, GRAVESEND

CHAPEL CHOIR OF ST. MARGARET'S SCHOOL, BUSHEY

Musical Director: John Wanvick-Stone Sweet Swan of Avon } John Wanvick-Stone Journey to the Stars Tonight's performers from St. John's all share a desire to perform somewhat unusual material with vitality. Several members of the ensemble have performed at the South Bank for the past three years in the National Festival of Music for Youth, with a tremendous sense of pride and achievement. They are even more delighted to bring their own form of music to the Schools Prom for the first time. The group rehearses once a week, rehearsals taking the form of rehearsal - workshop - experiment: an attempt to create a situation which will (in the words of John Cage) "make available for musical purposes any and all sounds that can be heard". Performances develop from a mutual decisionmaking process. This helps to create a feeling of group awareness, understanding and enhanced relationships so that, ideally, music at St. John's becomes more than just an extra-curricular activity. Sweet Swan of Avon John Wanvick-Slone Using words by De la Mare, vocalists create an atmospheric "Sound World" through combinations of strict notation, controlled improvisation and free- expression sections. Journey to the Stars John Wanvick-Stolle Uses extended vocal techniques to enable the voice to "copy" instrumental sounds and vice versa . The final section uses a pre-recorded seven-track tape to create a sense of slow motion movement through space, in response to a textural starting point: "1fly onwards. Slowly, slowly. Through air frozen by silence; cracked by the weight of loneliness ...onwards .. .onwards .. .onwards".

Director of Music: Graham Gartoll Gloria from Missa Brevis Benjamin Britten Three Graces Graham Garlon Two for the Price of One arr. A. Carter SI- Margaret's is an independent public school for girls governed by the Clergy Orphan Corporation which founded it in 1749. The Choir sings in daily and Sunday services in the School Chapel and Evensong in St. Albans Abbey about once a term. Last year it presented Edinburgh Festival Fringe Concerts and sang services in St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral for over a week. This year it has sung the semi-chorus in Hoist's "Hymnn of Jesus" with Watford Philharmonic Society, Walton's "Belshazzar's Feast" with Harrow School and Verdi's "Requiem" with Eton College. An open-air concert in Fountains Abbey was also memorable. They were awarded the Most Outstanding Performance Award in the "Voices in Concert" category at this year's National Festival of Music for Youth. The Choir is participating in the Schools Prom for the first time. Three Graces included in their programme was written by their director Graham Garton and is among over two hundred written in the past decade.

STOURBRIDGE YOUTH SWING BAND

STRATHCLYDE SCHOOLS' SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Musical Director: Reg Reid Strike up the Band George Gershwin Blues Machine Sammy Nestico Flight to Nassau Birdland J. Zawil1ul, arr. J. Higgins The Band was formed in 1982 from schools and colleges in the Stourbridge area. Within a few months of formation they were invited to play in the Schools Prom at the Royal Albert Hall featuring Kenny Baker and played there again in 1986. The Band finished runners up in the BBC Big Band Competition (Junior Section) in the same year. In March 1987 and again this year the Band won the Boosey & Hawkes/TV Times Trophy for Top Band in the Country with Richard Williams winning the Individual Award for Top Soloist. Also this year the Band played in the Schools Prom at the Royal Hall Harrogate in April and in the National Festival of Music for Youth in July. The Band have chosen to play "Strike up the Band'; one of Gershwin's great show tunes, Sammy Nestico's "Blues Machine" as played by Count Basie and to close the programme, "Birdland", a big band arrangement of a recent popular hit.

Conductor: John Lubbock Symphony No. 4 in F minor (Finale) Allegro con Fuoco P. I. Tchaikovsky Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 Edward EIgar - "Land of Hope and Glory" Founded in 1977, the Strathclyde Schools' Symphony Orchestra is now considered one of the leading school symphony orchestras in Britain. The Orchestra's complement is normally around one hundred young musicians, conducted by a professional guest conductor. Membership of the Orchestra is open to young people who attend secondary schools in Strathclyde Region and each year some five hundred youngsters apply for a place. Preliminary auditions are held annually in schools throughout the region and the final selection is made at a second regional audition. In order to ensure that every pupil who wishes to join the Orchestra can attend rehearsals, bearing in mind the size of Strathclyde Region, rehearsals are normally restricted to a few weekends and a residential course in June. The Orchestra performs works from the standard classical symphonic repertoire and usually gives concerts in two of the six divisions of Strathclyde Region each year, as well as an annual concert in the City Hall, Glasgow. For a number of years it has been invited to give the concluding concert of the International Festival of Youth Orchestras which takes place in Edinburgh concurrently with the Edinburgh International Festival and received an invitation to give the concluding performance in the first Schools Prom Scotland on 20 June of this year as well as providing music for the opening of the XVII Assembly of European Municipalities and Regions held in Glasgow earlier that month.

The Orchestra is also beginning to earn a fine reputation abroad, having undertaken very successful tours in Germany (1982), Bavaria (1985), and Denmark (1987), the last tour concluding with a concert at the world-famous Tivoli in Copenhagen. In September 1988, the orchestra undertook a short European tour, visiting Belgium, Luxembourg and Nord Pas de Calais, France. A similar tour is already being planned for 1989. Symphony No. 4 in F minor (Finale) Allegro con Fuoco P. I. Tchaikovsky This symphony, composed in 1877-8, with its expressive melodies and exciting climaxes, reflects a difficult period in Tchaikovsky's life which included a short-Jived marriage, separation and attempted suicide coinciding with a relationship from afar (they never met) with M.adame Nadezhda von Meek who became his inspiration and patroness. Allegro con Fuoco is a very apt title for the finale, but the energetic opening is short-lived and a folk song for the woodwind is heard before a third theme is presented by the full orchestra. The development section looks again at the folk song. The sudden return of the motto theme from the first movement interrupts the broad, lively tune of the recapitulation and signals the beginning of a vigorous coda. Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 Edward EIgar - "Land of Hope and Glory" This march, now so firmly associated with the Last Night of the Proms, was composed in 1901. Referring to the tune in the trio section, Elgar said to one of his "Enigma" friends, "Dorabella'; "I've got a tune that will knock'em flat." The march was played at the London Promenade concert in the same year, conducted by Henry Wood. The march was indeed a knock-out, the audience was calling for three encores. With the addition of the Land of Hope and Glory words for the Coronation Ode of 1902, as suggested by King Edward VII, the march became a second national anthem.

Friends of Music for Youth

Back cover

In the Schools Prom programme of seven years ago, co-founder Derek Jewell wrote of his fear that these great occasions and the vibrant world of youth music would eventually be taken for granted. He would be pleased to know that now, in their fourteenth year, they continue to grow in both stature and in excellence. The Schools Proms have become the great national celebration of one of education's greatest successes. Far from fading into a cultural backwater, youth music's light burns brighter than ever before. There are still problems to be faced, it is true. We are yet to see what the current changes in education are to bring. Local authority instrumental teaching services have been central to the success of music in education. With the shift of control to individual schools, this crucial service must be preserved if music is to continue to flourish .

The joint sponsors of Music for Youth, Commercial Union Assurance, Marks and Spencer, Music Industries Association, The Times Educational Supplement, W. H. Smith and the Department of Education and Science all regard their encouragement of music in education as a rewarding and worthwhile contribution to society. With their support and backing, and that of our "Friends", through corporate membership, we shall continue to achieve standards of excellence in our young musicians that are the envy of the world.

Schools Prom Personalities Bob Holness, Presenter. As the dreaded doodle-bugs rained down on London's suburbs one night towards the close of the Second World War, a young boy lying huddled beneath his blankets secretly listening to a small crackling radio set could have had no idea that his addiction to radio would one day lead to an acclaimed career in broadcasting. The boy's name was Robert Holness and his career over the past thirty years has spanned virtually every aspect of broadcasting in both radio and television.

1

His sheer love and enthusiasm for his work has ensured not only his dual success on both the small screen and the airwaves, but also his enduring popularity with old and young alike. Twe.nty-six years after making his televjsion debut as host of Granada Television's early game show "Take a Letter", Holness is known to an average audience of some twelve million viewers as host of Central Television's runaway success, "Blockbusters", the first quiz show in Britain to air on a daily basis. Bob's special rapport with his eager young competitors and the consistently cliff-hanging, intelligent nature of the show won "Blockbusters" the TV Times Readers' Favourite Game Show Award and a British Academy Award nomination for Best Children's Programme in 1986. Now into its fifth series, "Blockbusters" is also regularly voted the "Best Game Show" by the readers of Britain's national newspapers. Bob Holness has achieved a great deal in his thirty one year career in radio and television but he admits to a certain nagging regret. "1 would dearly love to have played either the flute, or the trombone, my two favourite instruments and then 1 could make my own music. Still, there is plenty of time ... l may yet get that done too ...."

Antony Hopkins CBE, Guest Conductor and Presenter, has been associated with the Schools Prom from the first and has conducted the fina le at everyone. He has lectured and conducted in many countries and his "Talking About Music" programme on Radio 3 is now in its thirty-third year. His book "Understanding Music" won the Yorkshire Post award as the best music book of 1986 and has now been issued in paperback. His book on the Beethoven symphonies has also been reprinted as a paperback while other publications include "Sounds of Music", a book about the orchestra, and his highly entertaining autobiography "Beating Time". His book of scandalous poems about musicians, "Music-amusings", is guaranteed to make you laugh. Another work of his, "John & the Magic Music Man': makes a perfect introduction to the orchestra for young children. More recent books are "Concertgoer's Companion", which came out in November 1984 with Volume 2 following in January 1986 and the recently completed mammoth book, "Exploring Music". Richard Stilgoe, Presentel; has a wife, an ex-wife, five children, a dog and a Hymac digger. From this you will gather that he is passionate and creative but essentially down to earth. He was born in Camberley and brought up in Liverpool, where he sang "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth" at St. Agnes' Church and "Rip It Up" at the Cavern. In trying to write a song as good as either of these, he has now written several hundred and played the results on radio ("Today", "Stilgoe's Around" and the prize-winning "Hamburger Weekend"), on television ("Nationwide",

"That's Life", his own series and everyone else's) and on stages all over the world. His one-man show has been seen at festivals from Edinburgh to Adelaide. Clients for his bespoke cabaret act include IBM in Rhodes, Butlin's in Toronto and H.M. The Queen at Windsor Castle. For Andrew Lloyd Webber he wrote the words for the opening song of "Cats", all of the words of "Starlight Express" and every other word in "The Phantom of the Opera". This has paid for the Hymac digger, and enabled him to found the Orpheus Trust, which helps disabled children to play and enjoy music. Much of his work is now with children. He introduces opera to children at Glyndebourne and is a director of the National Youth Music Theatre, for whom he wrote the words and music of "Bodywork", a musical that takes place inside the human body. He still occasionally sings "Rip It Up" but now finds "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth" a bit high.

Larry Westland, Executive Director of Music for Youth, has directed and produced the Schools Prom since its inception in 1975. He is well respected for his work in youth music, primarily as Director of the National Festival of Music for Youth . He is Director of the BarcIays Youth Music Theatre Awards and General Administrator of the British Youth Band 01ampionship which he founded in 1978 with Stephen Johnson and the British Youth Band Association.
