CONNECT CREATE CELEBRATE
Message from the President and Director Cheers for Eighty Years! MusicFest Northwest has been a part of the cultural fabric in the Spokane region since 1945 when it was founded by Josephine Clark to celebrate the end of World War II and “promote the arts of peace”. Inspired by the great music festivals of Europe, it served as the premier event of its kind in North America. Historical records tell us that Josephine Clark met with Harold Whelan, the conductor of the city's struggling young symphony, and bribed him with the promise of $100 if he could identify 10 young businessmen who would support a music festival to further the development of Spokane. So one Friday in the spring of 1945, they gathered for lunch at the Crescent Tea-room downtown. When the 10th businessman arrived, Clark handed the $100 to Maestro Whelan, and the Greater Spokane Music and Allied Arts Festival was born! That was the original name that remained until the year 2000 when the name was changed to MusicFest Northwest. Mrs. Clark viewed the festival as an expression of high ideals, and a vehicle for the cultural betterment of Spokane, particularly its youth. Since that first festival, more than 80,000 young musicians, artists and dancers, from first grade through adult, have participated in this acclaimed festival. During the 1950’s there was even an accordion category, and from the 50’s into the early 70’s visual art was among the divisions and included artists like Harold Balazs as adjudicator. In the newspaper archives this festival was often front-page news, highlighting visiting adjudicators from all over the U.S., student performances in all categories, along with featuring alums such as Thomas Hampson who went on to be one of the world’s greatest baritones of all time. Throughout the decades MusicFest has relied on volunteers, donors and sponsors to keep things running. There were years when the board decided not to have the Young Artist concert with the Spokane Symphony due to the financial strains. Like many non-profit music festivals, student entry fees do not cover the true cost of the event. Each entry is essentially sold at a loss, and in the past three years we have granted scholarships to any student who requested one as we believe access to a festival like this should not be restricted to only those who can pay. As a result, we are approaching another major decision in regard to how we maintain this exciting and vital program. We will hold an open forum on June 7, 2025 at 10:00am-11:30am at Music Hall, Gonzaga University, to discuss our options and gather the creative ideas and we invite you to be part of that discussion. Let’s come together to ensure MusicFest remains a vibrant part of the greater Spokane region for decades to come!

Celebrating 80 Years of MusicFest Northwest Origins & Founding Vision In 1945, piano teacher Josephine Clark had a vision to celebrate the end of World War II and to "promote the arts of peace" by establishing a festival modeled on those in Europe. She decided to meet with Harold Whelan, the conductor of the city's symphony, with the promise of $100 for the symphony if he could round up 10 businessmen who would support a music festival to further the cultural development of Spokane. In the spring of 1945, they gathered for lunch at the Crescent tearoom. After the last businessman arrived, Clark gave Whelan the $100 and the Greater Spokane Music and Allied Arts Festival was born. Josephine Clark continued to support the festival as an honorary trustee until her death in February 1973. In 2000 what began as the Greater Spokane Music and Allied Arts Festival was re-named MusicFest Northwest, which stands today as one of the most respected and longstanding music education festivals in the United States. Early years included divisions such as visual art, drama and speech and even accordion. Performances and adjudications were held in school auditoriums, local churches and music stores. The Spokesman Review often highlighted this festival on its front pages, lauding the students and visiting adjudicators as one of the “must see” events of the season. Growth & Transformation As MusicFest Northwest evolved, so did its reach and reputation. One of the highlights is the collaboration with the Spokane Symphony, as the young Artist winners perform with the SSO at the Fox Theater. By the late 1970’s winners included baritone Thomas Hampson and pianist Stephen Drury among many others who have gone on to world-wide acclaim as

Celebrating 80 Years of MusicFest Northwest performing artists. Others who participated went on to be CEO’s of major companies and leaders in science, business and all manner of fields. MusicFest NW had become a cornerstone in the cultural calendar, fostering collaboration between students, teachers, and internationally acclaimed adjudicators and supporting creative growth and development of every participant. Additional Young Artist winners working in our region today include Greg Presley, Jason Moody, Archie Chen, Geoffrey McKay, Logan Pintor and Malinda Wagstaff to name a few among many more! One of the astonishing aspects of this ever-expanding festival is that it is primarily run by volunteers. Countless members of the Spokane region have served on the board, or as president, volunteered as monitors/adjudicator assistants, and fundraisers. MusicFest depends on the Spokane community for its time, talent and treasure to support this exciting program – and Spokane has indeed stepped up to do just that! Moments and People To Remember Over the decades, MusicFest Northwest has seen the rise of countless young artists who have gone on to perform on national and international stages. Alumni include renowned soloists, composers, educators, and performers who credit the festival for sparking their professional journeys. A few notables: • The Festival Highlights Concert, introduced in the early 2000s, continues to highlight the finest talent across all divisions. • MusicFest partnership with the Spokane Symphony to feature our young artists in professional concerts. • Since 1995 we have partnered with KPBX to produce live shows on public radio featuring students from all ages and divisions during festival week.

Celebrating 80 Years of MusicFest Northwest • In 1997 MusicFest had 1785 participants, the highest number recorded. • Shirley Ennis who was the driving engine of MusicFest from 1990-2019. • MusicFest has become a destination festival for participants far beyond the Inland Northwest. • The legacy of community volunteers and board members whose tireless dedication has sustained the festival’s mission. • Generations of teachers, nurturing both excellence and confidence in thousands of students. This year, we honor not just the music and ballet divisions, but the mentors, supporters, volunteers, adjudicators, teachers, families, and visionaries who built the foundation we stand on today. Looking Forward — Our 80th Year and Beyond Since 1945 over 80,000 musicians, artists and dancers have participated in this festival. As we enter our 80th year, MusicFest Northwest stands poised at the intersection of tradition and innovation. In 2024 we reinstated the choral division in partnership with Gonzaga University, and in 2025 we introduce exciting new divisions including jazz and composition. MusicFest is committed to explore multimedia and interdisciplinary formats, and include educational events throughout the year such as mini-master classes and school programs, expanding the reach and relevance of the festival. With our sights set on accessibility and inclusion, we aim to ensure that every young artist of all abilities and skill levels has a stage, a mentor, and a moment to shine. We remain deeply committed to our roots—where community, education, and artistry meet—but we’re equally excited about what’s ahead. The next chapter promises greater engagement, cross-arts

Celebrating 80 Years of MusicFest Northwest collaborations, and a renewed emphasis on mentorship, diversity, and creativity. Here’s to 80 years of harmony and to the retention of Josephine Clark’s vision of peace through the arts in this vital and acclaimed festival. As citizens we are called to share in the responsibility to ensure that organizations such as MusicFest Northwest are supported sustained, and that full access is available to every young person who wants to explore their expressive talents. On this anniversary we renew our mission to provide exemplary educational and performance opportunities for the youth throughout our region, advancing all participants, both performers and listeners a few steps further into enlightened and joyous living. Cheers to 80 years!
