¡Eh, ¡eh! ¡Es un majo, un majo es!

The discreet boyfriend They say that my boyfriend is ugly It’s possible that it is the case That love is desire That blinds and dizzies For some time I’ve known That those who love are blind. Even more if my boyfriend is not a man As kind is distinguished and amazes Instead he is discreet And guards a secret That I have entrusted to him Knowing he is loyal What is the secret That my boyfriend keeps? It would be indiscreet For me to share No small feat would it be to find out Secrets between a man and woman Born in Lavapies Eh, eh, Eh! A man, a man is he!

The Moorish cloth The fine cloth in the shop Had a stain fall on it.

¡Ay!

It is sold for less Because it lost its value Ay!

Asturiana Por ver si me consolaba Arrimeme a un pino verde Por verme llorar, lloraba

Asturiana To see if it would console me I got close to a green pine Watching me weep, it wept

And the pine as it was green For watching me weep, wept

Jota They say that we don’t love each other Because they don’t see us talk To your heart and mine They can ask

Y aunque no quiera tu madre. Adiós, niña, hasta mañana.

I bid farewell to you To your house and your window And while I don’t like your mother Goodbye, my sweet, until tomorrow

Canción Por traidores, tus ojos, voy a enterrarlos.

Song For traitors your eyes I will bury them You don’t know what it cost Of the air Child, to see them Mother at the edge

Dicen que no me quieres, ya me has querido. Váyase lo ganado, del aire. Por lo perdido, Madre, a la orilla.

They say you don’t love me You’ve already loved me Let go of what’s gained Of the air For the lost Mother at the edge

Intorno all’idol mio Intorno all’idol mio spirate pur, spirate, Aure, aure soavi e grate, E nelle guancie elette Baciatelo per me, Cortesi, cortesi aurette!

Around my idol Around my idol Breathe, merely breathe, Winds sweet and gracious And on the favored cheeks Kiss him for me, courtly breezes!

In my love who rests On the wings of peace Pleasant dreams provoke. And my hidden ardor Reveal to him for me O spirits of love.

T R A N S L AT ION S O mio babbino caro O mio babbino caro, mi piace, è bello, bello, Vo' andare in Porta Rossa [it] a comperar l'anello!

Oh my beloved father, Oh my dear papa, I love him, he is handsome, handsome I want to go to Porta Rossa To buy the ring!

Yes, yes, I want to go there! And if I loved him in vain, I would go to the Ponte Vecchio, But to throw myself in the Arno!

Mi struggo e mi tormento! O Dio, vorrei morir! Babbo, pietà, pietà! Babbo, pietà, pietà!

I am anguished and tormented! Oh God, I'd want to die! Papa, have pity, have pity! Papa, have pity, have pity!

As Luise Was Burning the Letters of Her Unfaithful Lover You borne of such hot phantasy, In revelry and so much gushing Brought to the world, o perish You offspring from melancholy!

The flames which made you into being, I give you now back to the flames, And all those songs of revelry, Alas! he sang not just for me.

You cherish'd letters, there you burn, And soon there is no trace of you. Alas! the man who once has penn'd you, Will possibly burn long in me.

T R A N S L AT ION S Die Männer sind méchant!

Men are faithless You told me, mother: he’s a young rogue! I would not believe you until I had tormented myself sick. Yes, I now know he really is; I had simply misjudged him. You told me, mother: ‘Men are faithless!’ Yesterday, as dusk fell silently, in the copse outside the village, I heard a whispered ‘Good evening!’ and then a whispered ‘Many thanks!’ I crept up and listened; I stood as if transfixed: it was he, with someone else – ‘Men are faithless!’ O mother, what torture! I must be out with it, I must! It didn’t just stop at whispering, it didn’t just stop at greetings! It went from greetings to kisses, from kisses to holding hands, from holding hands ... ah, dear mother, ‘Men are faithless!
