PROGRAM NOTES
Reflections from the Alps grew from Sadie Glass and Ciera Alkhoury’s summer 2026 research in Switzerland, supported by Pacific’s Scholarly and Artistic Activity Grant and Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship. Their travels included studying Swiss alphorn traditions, meeting instrument makers and musicians, exploring historical instruments, and participating in the International Alphorn Festival in Nendaz. The program brings those experiences back to Pacific through music encountered, studied, and performed during their travels. The repertoire spans traditional and contemporary alphorn music, works connected to Nendaz and Switzerland’s communal alphorn tradition, music for modern horn, and newer works exploring the alphorn as a contemporary concert instrument. Throughout the recital, Sadie and Ciera will share stories and reflections on how these experiences influenced their approaches to performance, teaching, and the alphorn. —Sadie Glass
ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES Sadie Glass is assistant professor of horn and director of the Brass-Percussion Program at University of the Pacific. She teaches modern and historical horn, music theory, brass methods, and chamber music. An Ambassador for the Alphorn Project, a nationwide initiative exploring the alphorn as a tool for innovative brass pedagogy and performance, she leads alphorn initiatives throughout the U.S. Supported by a 2026 Scholarly and Artistic Activity Grant, Glass traveled throughout Switzerland researching alphorn performance traditions, pedagogy, instrument making, and historical instruments. She competed at the International Alphorn Festival in Nendaz, placing fifth in the solo competition—the highest American placement since 2012—and sixth in the Formation Category with Trio Sierra Alphorns. Glass is a tenured member of the Monterey Symphony and has performed with the San Francisco Symphony, Stockton Symphony, and Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera. A historical horn specialist, she performs with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, American Bach Soloists, Portland Baroque Orchestra, Apollo’s Fire, and Philharmonie Austin. She presents clinics and masterclasses nationwide and serves on the summer faculty of Cormont Horn Camp. Outside the concert hall, Glass enjoys traveling, DIY projects, and time with her family. Ciera Alkhoury is pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in music performance with a minor in music history at University of the Pacific. An active Bay Area freelancer, she has performed with the San Francisco Philharmonic, Golden Gate Symphony, and is a member of the San Francisco Youth Symphony Orchestra. A 2026 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship recipient, Alkhoury traveled to Switzerland to study alphorn traditions and explore the instrument as a modern pedagogical tool for brass musicians. Outside of music, she enjoys puzzles, hiking, and spending time with her triplet sisters.
