Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony 2019

The Brubeck Institute was established at University of the Pacific from 2000 to 2019 to honor Pacific’s distinguished alumni, Dave ’42 and Iola ’45 Brubeck.

The mission of the institute is to build on Dave Brubeck’s legacy and his lifelong dedication to music, creativity, education and the advancement of important social issues including civil rights, international relations, environmental concerns and social justice.

The institute’s five core programs have included the Brubeck Collection, Brubeck Festival, Brubeck Fellowship Program, Summer Jazz Colony and the Outreach Program.

As the Brubeck family explores new avenues to celebrate the life and contributions of Dave and Iola through the Brubeck Living Legacy organization, fall 2019 marks the launch of our Pacific Jazz Ambassadors program, expanding upon the high level of jazz education for which Pacific’s Jazz Studies continue to be recognized (more on page 10).

In the last 18 years, the Summer Jazz Colony has been an important aspect of the mission of the Brubeck Institute and Pacific’s Conservatory of Music. We have so many great memories of the Colony and we are looking forward to making new ones in the years to come. Over these years, we have had the privilege of getting to know many talented high school musicians from around the globe and seeing them perform with our faculty and renowned guest musicians. This year promises to continue that trend.

The National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) is a charity with a mission to promote jazz as an exciting, engaging and inspirational art form through world-class performances and education work.

Since its founding in 1965, NYJO has grown from one jazz orchestra of emerging professionals to a multi-faceted organization working in jazz education at all levels. The Jazz Orchestra, led by artistic and music director Mark Armstrong, remains the gateway to the profession for many; alumni include Guy Barker, Mark Nightingale, Laura Jurd and Amy Winehouse. Beginning January 2020, we will be expanding our offering for emerging professional musicians with the new NYJO Jazz Exchange, a creative ensemble(s) supported by Ensemble Coach Orphy Robinson, for musicians all over the U.K. who are seeking an alternative route into the profession from the traditional jazz orchestra format.

The fastest growing area of NYJO’s work is our national education program. While some places are well served by jazz education opportunities, in others it can be more difficult for young potential jazz musicians to progress.

We are now working to change that, and our battle cry is “Levelling the Playing Field in Jazz Education.” In addition to our NYJO Academy in London, we have now set up NYJO Regional Academies in Wiltshire, Darlington, Cumbria and Lancashire. We currently have 90 education partner organizations around the U.K.; nine are “Feature Partners,” who have signed up for a minimum three-year partnership to work closely with NYJO developing jazz education opportunities that suit their local needs.

ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE Patrick Langham is an experienced

educator and performer with a 15-year career at University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music.

As professor and director of Jazz Studies, Langham has developed the university’s Jazz Studies degree programs from the ground up. He has taught core classes to Brubeck Institute Fellowship students since 2003; he served as education director for the Institute from 2005 to 2006, and since 2016 he has served as interim executive director.

In 2017, Langham was awarded the California Music Educators Association Jazz Educator Award honoring excellence in jazz education and performance, and he is currently the president of the California Alliance for Jazz. Langham holds bachelor’s and master’s of music degrees, both with a concentration in jazz studies, from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Langham is a co-founder of the Take 5 Jazz Club in Stockton, and he regularly performs at the club and throughout the region. As a saxophonist, he has played with many distinguished jazz artists, including Lewis Nash, Bob Hurst, Donald Brown, Tom Harrell, Essiet Essiet, Terell Stafford and Louis Hayes.

Randy Sandoli, pianist and composer, is

an assistant director at University of the Pacific’s Brubeck Institute. Sandoli recently recorded and released his second album, Simcha, featuring trio, quartet, quintet and sextet arrangements of his original music. In addition to leading his own group and performing often with others, Randy maintains a full-time teaching schedule at Pacific’s Conservatory of Music.

Carl Allen, jazz drummer, grew up on gospel, R&B and funk, but after hearing a recording by the legendary saxophonist Benny Carter, he later turned to jazz. With over 225 recordings to his credit, the gifted Milwaukee-born, New Yorkbased drummer, entrepreneur and educator has performed or recorded with Freddie Hubbard, Michael Brecker, Dizzy Gillespie, Randy Brecker, Benny Golson, Christian McBride, Jennifer Holliday, J.J. Johnson, Rickie Lee Jones, Sammy Davis Jr., Branford Marsalis, Kenny Garrett, Lena Horne, Ruth Brown, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Bobby Hutcherson, Mike Stern, Nellie McKay, Terence Blanchard, Phil Woods, Benny Green, Cyrus Chestnut, Joe Henderson, Billy Childs and others. In May 2012, Allen received an honorary doctorate from Snow College in Ephraim, Utah. As the artistic director of Jazz Studies at The Juilliard School in New York City, he was instrumental in creating one of the best jazz programs in the world.

Mark Armstrong is a jazz trumpeter,

composer, arranger and educator from London, U.K. He studied at Oxford University and the Guildhall School of Music. As jazz professor at the Royal College of Music, he runs classes on jazz harmony, arranging, composition and improvisation, and directs the Big Band. He is a member of the Ronnie Scott Jazz Orchestra, which recently completed a residency with Maria Schneider. He also has a commercial career playing in recording sessions and musical theatre.

Armstrong is artistic director of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, which has seen him conduct two BBC Proms concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, and record two studio albums as well as perform in concerts and clinics all around Europe. He is a music examiner, moderator and presenter for the ABRSM, which provides music exams for jazz and classical students in the U.K. and worldwide.

Steve Davis is widely regarded as one of

today’s leading voices on the trombone. Davis has worked with jazz luminaries such as Art Blakey, Jackie McLean, Benny Golson, Freddie Hubbard, Horace Silver, Cedar Walton, Hank Jones and Roy Hargrove. Raised in Binghamton, NY, his many notable performances include “The Jimmy Fallon Show” with Stevie Wonder and “The White House Tribute to Ray Charles” (PBS). Davis appears on over 150 recordings and 20 as a leader, including his latest release, Correlations (Smoke Sessions).

He also appears on Chick Corea’s Spanish Heart Band album Antidote and toured Europe with the group in July 2019. Davis continues to work regularly with One For All, Larry Willis, Rene McLean, Nat Reeves, Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars, Jimmy Heath, Ron Carter’s and Christian McBride’s big bands. Davis was recently honored for over 25 years of service as a faculty member at the Hartt School’s Jackie McLean Jazz Studies Division, University of Hartford, CT.

Dr. JB Dyas, bassist, has been a leader in

jazz education for the past two decades. Formerly executive director of the Brubeck Institute, Dyas, currently serves as vice president for education and curriculum development at the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz at UCLA. Throughout his career, he has performed across the country, taught students at every level, directed large and small ensembles, developed and implemented new jazz curricula, written for DownBeat magazine and other national music publications, and presented numerous jazz workshops, teacher-training seminars and jazz “informances” around the globe with such renowned artists as Dave Brubeck and Herbie Hancock. He received his master’s degree in Jazz Pedagogy from the University of Miami and PhD in Music Education from Indiana University.

Essiet Okon Essiet has long established himself as one of New York’s premier bassist. He received critical acclaim more than two decades ago as a member of saxophonist Bobby Watson’s post-hard bop group Horizon. Essiet was born in Omaha, Nebraska, where his parents moved from Nigeria, West Africa. Essiet began his musical studies at age 10 on the violin, and at age 14 he took up a bass violin. During his childhood, his family moved often around the U.S., to Europe and Africa. His early exposure to many cultures, languages and folkways fostered Essiet’s worldview of strength through diversity. Essiet’s first music collaborations were with renowned musicians such as percussionist Famoudou Don Moye, pianist Abdullah Ibrahim, and drummer Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Later on, Essiet performed and recorded with such notables as Benny Golson, Johnny Griffin, James Moody, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Cedar Walton, Pat Martino, Kenny Burrell, Jackie McLean, Frank Morgan, Kenny Barron, Louis Hayes, Jimmy Cobb, Billy Higgins, Billy Hart, Art Farmer, Abby Lincoln, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Billy Cobham, Al Foster, Eddie Henderson, Steve Turre, Jon Faddis, Victor Lewis, Kenny Garrett, Kenny Kirkland, Mulgrew Miller, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Mike Stern, Kevin Mahogany, Kurt Elling, Fort Apache Band, Danilo Perez, Claudia Acuna, Geri Allen and Ralph Peterson and others. ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE Laura Hartmann became interested in arts administration when she took a job with the Aspen Music Festival and School after completing a master’s degree in flute performance at the Brooklyn Conservatory, NY. In 1990, she began working for Herbert Barrett Management, where she has traveled with many leading jazz artists. In 1997, Hartmann founded LVanHart Artist Productions.

Since then, she has met and collaborated with many of today’s great jazz musicians developing her own roster, which has included Steve Wilson, Mike Stern, Terell Stafford, Ray Vega, Joe Locke, Michael Wolff, Don Byron and Tom Harrell. Her production credits include: The Ray Barretto Sextet and The Chico O’Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra at Chicago Symphony Center; A Celebration of the Life and Legacy of Dr. Billy Taylor featuring Ramsey Lewis; tributes for the Chamber Music America conference honoring Dr. Billy Taylor, Chick Corea, Marian McPartland and the America Brass Quintet. In 2013, Hartmann co-produced the celebration of the life of Mulgrew Miller with Steve Wilson at Dizzy’s Club, Jazz at Lincoln Center, NYC. She has been involved in the production of such albums as Steve Wilson/Lewis Nash duo’s Duologue (MCG Jazz), Wilsonian’s Grain Live in New York: The Vanguard Sessions (Random Act Records), and Diane Monroe/Tony Miceli duo’s Alone Together (Dreambox Media).

Ingrid Jensen, hailed as one of the most

gifted trumpeters of her generation, was born in Vancouver and raised in Nanaimo, BC. After graduating from Berklee, Boston, MA, she moved to Austria to teach at the Bruckner Conservatory.

She returned to the U.S. three years later to record for ENJA records. Based in New York, she has recorded 10 albums as a leader or co-leader, and is featured on many Grammy and JUNO winning albums. Ingrid also leads her own groups, and performs with Terri-Lyne Carrington’s Mosaic Project, the Christine Jensen Jazz Orchestra, Artemis and others.

Brian Kendrick currently maintains an active

performance schedule playing jazz, contemporary, orchestra and chamber music, and Broadway on the West Coast. Kendrick is director of the jazz and percussion programs at San Joaquin Delta College and teaches regularly at the Brubeck Institute, Pacific Summer Jazz Camp, and Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony. Kendrick holds bachelor’s and master’s of music degrees in Percussion Performance from Texas Tech University and a Master of Science degree from Syracuse University.

He has performed throughout North America and Europe. He is active as a clinician and adjudicator with jazz honor bands; professional organizations, such as Jazz Educators Network and Percussive Arts Society; summer camps, such as Cazadero; and numerous festivals throughout the West Coast.

Dana Landry, pianist, is always pursuing

the next artistic challenge. He is as at home playing bebop with a jazz quartet as he is playing Prokofiev with an orchestra. Landry is featured on recordings released by record labels including Summit, Origin, and Artist Alliance, several of which made it to the top of the Jazz Week U.S. Radio Airplay Chart. His first CD as a leader is Journey Home, featuring virtuoso vibist Gary Burton, was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Joe Mazzaferro is a Sacramento-based

trumpeter, educator and composer and an assistant professor of practice at Pacific’s Brubeck Institute. As a musician, he is active on the Northern California jazz scene and in demand as a guest artist and clinician across the United States.

In November 2017, Mazzaferro released his debut album In Terms Of… (Joe Mazz Music) featuring saxophonist Jeff Clayton along with special guests, drummer Carl Allen and pianist Donald Brown. The album peaked at #43 on the JazzWeek Charts and received high praise from jazz critics. The album has been described as “vintage hard bop with maturity” (George Harris, Jazz Weekly) as well as “a little bebop, a little swing, and a lot of tenderness, heart, and passion come together on this intriguing debut” (Tom Henry, Toledo Blade). As an active freelance musician, Mazzaferro has performed with many jazz greats, including Dave Brubeck, Christian McBride, Wycliffe Gordon, Gunther Schuller, and Lewis Nash at such legendary venues as the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Brubeck Festival, Yoshi’s Jazz Club and Fantasy Studios. Marty Pervan has performed on trumpet,

As an educator, he has taught brass, theory, composition and improvisation in several primary and secondary schools, and directed large and small school and community ensembles including the Western Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra. Pervan’s musical versatility has enabled him to engage in a diverse range of genres such as New Orleans style brass, Latin, jazz, reggae, ska, dub, funk/soul, as well as his own original music for quartet, sextet and big band. He often plays with the Symphony Orchestra in Perth, Western Australia, and is in high demand as a session musician appearing on over 50 recordings as a performer, composer and arranger. He is a regular part of the pool of pit musicians hired for professional touring musical productions, most recently in Tim Minchin’s Matilda and the Disney touring production of Aladdin.

Gabe Rupe is a Colorado-based bassist, who grew up in Denver. As a jazz musician, Rupe has won multiple awards of excellence, 2016 Vail Jazz All-Stars, 2016 Telluride Jazz All-Stars, 2017 Jazz Band of America, 2017 Monterey Jazz Festival’s Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, and was selected as the 2017 YoungArts’ finalist in jazz double bass. ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE Laura Hartmann became interested in arts administration when she took a job with the Aspen Music Festival and School after completing a master’s degree in flute performance at the Brooklyn Conservatory, NY. In 1990, she began working for Herbert Barrett Management, where she has traveled with many leading jazz artists. In 1997, Hartmann founded LVanHart Artist Productions.

Since then, she has met and collaborated with many of today’s great jazz musicians developing her own roster, which has included Steve Wilson, Mike Stern, Terell Stafford, Ray Vega, Joe Locke, Michael Wolff, Don Byron and Tom Harrell. Her production credits include: The Ray Barretto Sextet and The Chico O’Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra at Chicago Symphony Center; A Celebration of the Life and Legacy of Dr. Billy Taylor featuring Ramsey Lewis; tributes for the Chamber Music America conference honoring Dr. Billy Taylor, Chick Corea, Marian McPartland and the America Brass Quintet. In 2013, Hartmann co-produced the celebration of the life of Mulgrew Miller with Steve Wilson at Dizzy’s Club, Jazz at Lincoln Center, NYC. She has been involved in the production of such albums as Steve Wilson/Lewis Nash duo’s Duologue (MCG Jazz), Wilsonian’s Grain Live in New York: The Vanguard Sessions (Random Act Records), and Diane Monroe/Tony Miceli duo’s Alone Together (Dreambox Media).

Ingrid Jensen, hailed as one of the most

gifted trumpeters of her generation, was born in Vancouver and raised in Nanaimo, BC. After graduating from Berklee, Boston, MA, she moved to Austria to teach at the Bruckner Conservatory.

She returned to the U.S. three years later to record for ENJA records. Based in New York, she has recorded 10 albums as a leader or co-leader, and is featured on many Grammy and JUNO winning albums. Ingrid also leads her own groups, and performs with Terri-Lyne Carrington’s Mosaic Project, the Christine Jensen Jazz Orchestra, Artemis and others.

Brian Kendrick currently maintains an active

performance schedule playing jazz, contemporary, orchestra and chamber music, and Broadway on the West Coast. Kendrick is director of the jazz and percussion programs at San Joaquin Delta College and teaches regularly at the Brubeck Institute, Pacific Summer Jazz Camp, and Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony. Kendrick holds bachelor’s and master’s of music degrees in Percussion Performance from Texas Tech University and a Master of Science degree from Syracuse University.

He has performed throughout North America and Europe. He is active as a clinician and adjudicator with jazz honor bands; professional organizations, such as Jazz Educators Network and Percussive Arts Society; summer camps, such as Cazadero; and numerous festivals throughout the West Coast.

Dana Landry, pianist, is always pursuing

the next artistic challenge. He is as at home playing bebop with a jazz quartet as he is playing Prokofiev with an orchestra. Landry is featured on recordings released by record labels including Summit, Origin, and Artist Alliance, several of which made it to the top of the Jazz Week U.S. Radio Airplay Chart. His first CD as a leader is Journey Home, featuring virtuoso vibist Gary Burton, was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Staten Island, NY. He first discovered and fell in love with jazz in high school. Emmett attended the Brubeck Institute Fellowship program, where he performed, toured and recorded with an elite band of young musicians from across the U.S. Through this program, Emmett was able to study with world-renowned musicians Stefon Harris and Ed Simon. He received a YoungArts’ finalist award in jazz performance and composition and attended the YoungArts Finalist week in Miami, FL. After the Brubeck Institute, Emmett was awarded a full-tuition scholarship to Oberlin Conservatory, where he recently completed his third year studying jazz guitar and composition with Dan Wall, Billy Hart, Bobby Ferrazza and Jamey Haddad. Recently, Emmett studied at the Conservatorium Van Amsterdam, Europe, where he was mentored by Jesse Van Ruller. This summer, Emmett has been touring with various bands across the U.S. and Portugal. He is preparing to travel to Krakow, Poland, where he is a semifinalist in the Jarek Smietana Jazz Guitar Competition.

Gregory Tardy is a saxophonist, multi-reedist, and composer and one of the most versatile jazz musicians of his generation. In 1993, he started performing internationally with the legendary drummer, Elvin Jones. His performance schedule has taken him all over the world. As a soughtafter sideman, he has been featured on several DownBeat Albums of the Year and Grammynominated recordings including a Grammy winning album with Brian Lynch in 2006. Tardy performed and/or recorded with many prominent jazz artists, including Andrew Hill, Wynton Marsalis, Jay McShann, Nicholas Payton, Steve Coleman, Betty Carter, Don Byron, Bill Frisell, Rashied Ali, Ellis Marsalis, Tom Harrell, Dave Douglas, Brian Lynch, John Patitucci, Ferenc Nemeth, Elio Villafranca, Eddie Palmieri, Andrew Cyrille, Roy Hargrove, James Moody, Rufus Reid, Oliver Lake, Björk, Common, Willie Jones III, and others. Tardy has also played and/or recorded with many notable saxophonists, including Joe Lovano, Mark Turner, Chris Potter, Dewey Redman, Joshua Redman, Ravi Coltrane and Sherman Irby. COLONISTS James Baba is from Hillsborough, CA, and a rising

junior at San Mateo High School. He started music at the age of six, first playing the piano, then picking up saxophone at age nine. Initially, James played only classical music, but since middle school, he has become increasingly interested in jazz. He has played in a variety of bands, including a marching band, jazz combos, jazz big bands and wind ensembles.

Joseph Bly is 16 years old, born and raised on the American River in Carmichael, CA. He attends Rio Americano High School and has been in their top band since his freshman year. He enjoys playing at festivals such as the Monterey Jazz Festival, Swing Central and Essentially Ellington. Joseph has received numerous awards and studied with many great musicians.

Willie E. Bowman, Jr. is 16 years old and has just

completed his junior year at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts. Willie comes from a family with interests in music and arts, and he has always had a passion for music. He started playing the drums about five years ago. Since middle school, he has been playing professionally with The Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Programs and has traveled with them across the U.S. He attributes his professional beginnings to his middle school music teacher, Mrs. Elizabeth Hanson.

Although the drums are Willie’s primary instrument, he also plays vibraphone, xylophone, marimba and piano. Willie also performs with the Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Pit, Jazz and Latin Bands in his high school.

Isaac Goodman is a 15-year-old student at Rio Americano High School in Sacramento, CA. He started playing classical piano at the age of seven and began to study jazz three years ago. Isaac has played in jazz combos and big bands as well as in solo piano performances around the area. He has won various piano competitions such as The West Coast Ragtime Competition, The New American Music Festival, and he has received numerous awards at jazz festivals in California.

Zoe Harrison is a 17-year-old bassist and a senior at

Rio Americano High School in Sacramento, CA. She studies jazz and classical bass with Michael Schwagerus. Zoe has played in the Davis High School Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Band, conglomerate combo Groove Extension, and top UC Davis big band and combos under the direction of Jacam Manricks. Zoe has performed at Carnegie Hall and numerous jazz festivals including the Teagarden Jazz Festival, where she received an outstanding bass award.

Lasse Corson is a pianist attending Southwest High School in Minneapolis, MN. For the past two years, he has served as pianist with the Minnesota Youth Jazz Band. His main passion is playing piano in jazz combos, his own and others, during a variety of live performances around the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. He first took up jazz piano at age 13 while attending an arts magnet middle school in Florida.

Evan Haskin is a member of the award-winning Creative Music Ensemble directed by Justin Nielsen. Evan has played at numerous workshops and festivals and received many awards and scholarships. Evan has also been accepted into multiple arts academies, and has shared the stage with Wycliffe Gordon, Kobie Watkins (acclaimed drummer for Sonny Rollins), and Benny Green.

Evan studies privately with French jazz great Romain Pilon and San Francisco-based jazz guitarist Matthew Wrobel.

Connor Ettinger is an 18-year-old alto saxophonist

Jessica Luna is a bassist born and raised in Stockton, CA. She began her studies on violin at the age of three and by twelve, she started playing jazz bass and has since continued her studies. She received her Bachelor’s in Music Education from CSU Sacramento, CA, and is currently pursuing a Master’s of Music Education degree from University of the Pacific.

Cameron Fermoyle is a drummer from Perth, Australia, and a high school senior. He recently participated in the prestigious WAAPA Jazz Young Artists Ensemble and is a current WAYJO member. Cameron plays original music and standards, drawing inspiration from the likes of Nasheet Waits, Bill Stewart and Elvin Jones. He aims to study jazz performance and hopes to perform both locally and overseas, with New York being his personal goal.

Hannah Mayer is a pianist attending Oakland School for the Arts and is a member of the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars Big Band and the Monterey Jazz Festival Next Generation Women in Jazz Combo. She won third place in Jazz Search West 2019 and has shared the stage with Chucho Valdes, Sean Jones, and the Pete Escovedo Orchestra. Hannah was the composer and music director of a musical adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s All Summer in a Day performed at Shotgun Players, Berkeley, CA.

from Sacramento, CA. A recent graduate of Rio Americano High School, he began playing jazz in his freshman year.

With Rio’s AM Jazz Ensemble, he went on to perform at the 60th Monterey Jazz Festival, the 12th annual Charles Mingus Jazz Competition, and the 24th Essentially Ellington Festival among others, receiving two DownBeat awards. In autumn, he will be attending the University of Washington.

Grady Flamm is a 17-year-old trumpeter and a senior at Rio Americano High School in Sacramento, CA, where he plays in the award-winning AM Jazz Ensemble.

In 2019, Grady was selected to perform in the Monterey Jazz Festival’s Next Generation Jazz Orchestra as co-lead trumpet and also received the Outstanding Trumpet award at the Essentially Ellington Festival in NYC. Since 2017, he has been honored with numerous DownBeat Student Music Awards as part of the AM Jazz Ensemble and his student-led Mingus combo. Grady has shared the stage with artists and luminaries including Carl Allen, Bob Mintzer, Marquis Hill, Bria Skonberg, Anat Cohen, and has opened for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

Rio Americano High School in Sacramento, CA. She studies jazz and classical bass with Michael Schwagerus. Zoe has played in the Davis High School Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Band, conglomerate combo Groove Extension, and top UC Davis big band and combos under the direction of Jacam Manricks. Zoe has performed at Carnegie Hall and numerous jazz festivals including the Teagarden Jazz Festival, where she received an outstanding bass award.

Lasse Corson is a pianist attending Southwest High School in Minneapolis, MN. For the past two years, he has served as pianist with the Minnesota Youth Jazz Band. His main passion is playing piano in jazz combos, his own and others, during a variety of live performances around the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. He first took up jazz piano at age 13 while attending an arts magnet middle school in Florida.

Evan Haskin is a member of the award-winning Creative Music Ensemble directed by Justin Nielsen. Evan has played at numerous workshops and festivals and received many awards and scholarships. Evan has also been accepted into multiple arts academies, and has shared the stage with Wycliffe Gordon, Kobie Watkins (acclaimed drummer for Sonny Rollins), and Benny Green.

Evan studies privately with French jazz great Romain Pilon and San Francisco-based jazz guitarist Matthew Wrobel.

Connor Ettinger is an 18-year-old alto saxophonist

Jessica Luna is a bassist born and raised in Stockton, CA. She began her studies on violin at the age of three and by twelve, she started playing jazz bass and has since continued her studies. She received her Bachelor’s in Music Education from CSU Sacramento, CA, and is currently pursuing a Master’s of Music Education degree from University of the Pacific.

Cameron Fermoyle is a drummer from Perth, Australia, and a high school senior. He recently participated in the prestigious WAAPA Jazz Young Artists Ensemble and is a current WAYJO member. Cameron plays original music and standards, drawing inspiration from the likes of Nasheet Waits, Bill Stewart and Elvin Jones. He aims to study jazz performance and hopes to perform both locally and overseas, with New York being his personal goal.

Hannah Mayer is a pianist attending Oakland School for the Arts and is a member of the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars Big Band and the Monterey Jazz Festival Next Generation Women in Jazz Combo. She won third place in Jazz Search West 2019 and has shared the stage with Chucho Valdes, Sean Jones, and the Pete Escovedo Orchestra. Hannah was the composer and music director of a musical adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s All Summer in a Day performed at Shotgun Players, Berkeley, CA.

With Rio’s AM Jazz Ensemble, he went on to perform at the 60th Monterey Jazz Festival, the 12th annual Charles Mingus Jazz Competition, and the 24th Essentially Ellington Festival among others, receiving two DownBeat awards. In autumn, he will be attending the University of Washington.

Grady Flamm is a 17-year-old trumpeter and a senior at Rio Americano High School in Sacramento, CA, where he plays in the award-winning AM Jazz Ensemble.

In 2019, Grady was selected to perform in the Monterey Jazz Festival’s Next Generation Jazz Orchestra as co-lead trumpet and also received the Outstanding Trumpet award at the Essentially Ellington Festival in NYC. Since 2017, he has been honored with numerous DownBeat Student Music Awards as part of the AM Jazz Ensemble and his student-led Mingus combo. Grady has shared the stage with artists and luminaries including Carl Allen, Bob Mintzer, Marquis Hill, Bria Skonberg, Anat Cohen, and has opened for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

COLONISTS Aidan McCarthy is a bassist and composer living in Oakland, CA. He started playing rock guitar at the age of nine. Taken by the beauty and complexity of jazz music, Aidan made the switch to acoustic bass at the age of 13.

He currently studies bass with Glenn Richman. Aidan is a member of the Jazz School’s Studio Band directed by Dave Eshelman, Jazz School’s Advanced Combo II, and Oaktown’s Advance Jazz Group. Aidan’s unique style has been further refined by playing with other rising stars on the Bay Area’s booming music scene.

Harry Mercer started playing guitar at the age of

12 when he fell in love with his dad’s Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix records. He became interested in jazz at 16 and he has been very fortunate to learn from mentors such as pianist Julian Joseph and guitarist Mike Outram.

In September, Harry is moving to London to study at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music, where he hopes to begin his professional career in music.

Nathaniel Miller is a trumpeter from Walla Walla, WA. He has been a part of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Summer Jazz Academy, the Conservatorium van Amsterdam Keep An Eye Summer Jazz Workshop, and the NAFME All Northwest Jazz ensemble. He was the winner of the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival Trumpet Soloist competition in 2017, 2018 and 2019. in Los Angeles, CA. Cole began playing trombone at the age of 11. He has received outstanding soloist awards at numerous festivals. In 2017, Cole won the Outstanding Middle School Performer Award at the Reno Jazz Festival.

He was selected as the lead trombone player for the 2019 SCSBOA Jazz All Stars. Cole studies privately with Ira Nepus and Scott Whitfield. He also plays piano and composes.

Lester Ridout is a passionate, 16-year-old jazz

drummer from the U.K. This year, he has been accepted to the highly competitive Junior Jazz at The Royal Academy of Music, London, and was also successful in gaining a place at The Purcell School of Music. He has been a member of The National Youth Jazz Collective. Lester’s performances have included such venues in U.K. as The Vortex, Goldsmiths Hall, Green Note, Kings Place, Milton Court and Limelight Theatre.

Jack Ross is an aspiring jazz trumpeter from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire in the U.K. Over the last two years, Jack has been a member of the NYJO Academy and is currently part of the NYJO London Advanced Group and the NYJO Academy Big Band, directed by widely recognized jazz drummer Sebastiaan de Krom. Jack will begin his studies in jazz at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in September 2019.

The Brubeck Institute was established at University of the Pacific from 2000 to 2019 to honor Pacific’s distinguished alumni, Dave ’42 and Iola ’45 Brubeck.

The mission of the institute is to build on Dave Brubeck’s legacy and his lifelong dedication to music, creativity, education and the advancement of important social issues including civil rights, international relations, environmental concerns and social justice.

The institute’s five core programs have included the Brubeck Collection, Brubeck Festival, Brubeck Fellowship Program, Summer Jazz Colony and the Outreach Program.
