HEY SHROOMIES ! The year’s zipping by, and it’s already time for us to release our second edition of the re-launched magazine. For this issue we’ve kept the focus on FESTIVALS, because without our beloved psychedelic gatherings life would be an empty basket rolling on a desolate street that leads to nowhere...let’s just leave it at that… In this issue we’ve included a Festival Special, wherein some organizers shared some behind the scenes opinions with us. We also have an entire section showcasing the some nice festival photographs from the best photographers of the scene. Keeping our promise of providing more music related content, in this issue we have more space dedicated to Psytrance News. And we manage to bag a superb interview with Goa Gil; the magus himself speaks about his wicked sorcery. Festival Organizers Speak Out The mushroom team went behind the scenes to have a candid chat with some festival organizers and their modes of operation. Read on to know their perspectives:

Each festival has a unique facet that sets it apart from other festivals. We got in touch with

some festival organizers to get the facts straight from the field, so when questioned about the aspect that sets their festival apart from others, the representatives of PsyFi Festival stated, “The fresh spirit, the location, the liberal drug laws in our country, the line-up and the audience.” Whereas the folk from New Healing Festival said, “We want to develop an innovative festival concept for the future. Our festival is really meant to be sustainable in several ways. For the individuals joining the festival! For the environment. And for the society. We want our visitors to take something with them after

Psy-Fi Festival

The experience offered by a psychedelic music festival is extremely special since the prime focus dwells upon linking humans to the

spiritual essence that is innate in each individual. Psytrance is more than a genre of music, it is a way of life, a culture unto itself, and festivals are the celebration of this glorious mode of existence. This brings us to festival organizers and their crew; that hardy bunch of people who work day in and day out, to create the perfect environment for the dancers to lose themselves to music, and then to re-emerge on the other side refreshed and renewed.

Psy-Fi Festival

It’s an impossible task to place a pin on the exact time period when the sensation we now know as the psychedelic music festival was birthed. Starting back way in time from its techno roots in Goa, this brand of music has attracted a band of die-hard followers. Psychedelic music is a unique flavour that appeases select palates, but once it bites, it’s impossible to remove the tentacles of this crazy musical octopus.

Music is the foundation upon which the entire concept of psychedelic festival is built upon, it is the driving point. Festivals promote a variety of genres, for instance Summer Never Ends stated that they push “...all kinds of psychedelic Trance, progressive, forest, some old-school, chilling sounds, ethno-trance…” Daniel from New Healing Festival said, “At our festival electronic dance music meets natural vibrations! We present a magic blend of Trance, Goa, Psychedelic, ChillOut, Ambient, Dub, Space. So a lot of traditional music, handmade and natural sounds can be experienced at the festival while the main floor is focussed on a positive Trance and Goa sound all day and night. Within the Healing Area there will be many more natural concerts and Live-Sessions, too.” A great festival always reinvents itself each year, whilst keeping true to the ideals the festival stands for. It’s a fine balance between the preservation of heritage and innovation. For instance the usage of 3-D sound or virtual technology could revolutionize the manner in which festivals are experienced. But pushing technology aside, nothing draws in a crowd like a fantaboulus line-up. Festivals have their own system for booking the line-ups. Rob said, “We make a wish list and from there we start, we try to find a good flow for the time-table from morning to night.” Daniel stated, “We want our acts to share our positive philosophy! This year we curated the booking of the Healing Weekend together with our

dear friend DJane Gaby who put it like this: Music is a transmitter you can send out a lot of information and reach many hearts within a short time. It´s all about bringing a bright change to the world and let the people heal their wounds. We wish our visitors to leave the dancefloor with new visions, hopes and feelings.” Corinne from Summer Never Ends Festival stated, “Be it music, deco or show artist, the vibes at a festival are an amalgamation of all. SNE is thought to be a place for the positive exchange among artists and not a platform to distinguish oneself.” There are many elements that work in unison to create the collective entity known as a festival, but more than the tangible aspects, most festival organizers are in agreement when it comes down to the most important elements of a festival...Corinne said, “Nice Music, Art and love!” Daniel stated, “Peace, Love and Unity! It is the spirit of the people - the reason why everybody on-site

chooses to be there!” Whereas as Rob says,“That is simple, we can make the best blueprint i.e. decorations, facilities, line-up etc. etc. but it would be nothing without the spirit of the visitors, they make a festival for what it is.” Since most festivals are held out-doors in the bosom of Mother Nature, every festival ensures that their events leave no trace in the environment. Rob said, “We recycle everything that has been used to build the previous festival, we use re-usable drinking cups, We use eco toilets, All of our food is organic, and so is our beer, we leave no trace, We use mostly LED lights to save power, all the trash get’s separated.” Daniel stated, “We have a holistic eco-friendly concept. For example our catering is vegetarian and the whole social programme is focussed on sustainability and spirituality.” Whereas Corinne says, “Nearly all temporary buildings at SNE consist of elements which are being stored nearby and reused. the festival that will last long. We want them to feel good and focus on inspiration for a healthy mind, body and soul. Our philosophy: May all beings be happy!”

Festival creation is not an easy task, there’s a gazillion things that you need to keep in mind from the mighty to the mundane, here’s two tips from our festival organizer friends, Rob says, “Besides a good line-up, location and decorations, find as many little extras that you can and keep an eye on details.” And Corinne says, “Contact all the government departments, all police departments, and all possibly involved other departments of whose existence you have never heard so far. Try to contact any person in a distance up to 2km away from the location who might have anything against your idea. If you sorted that all out, start planning.” And finally at the end of the day, there is a reason why festival organizers pull out all stops in order to create that special place for the trancers; to the question what‘s the most gratifying aspect of festival creation? Rob said,“The end result. We spend the entire year in our offices working 12-14 hours a day with a group of 8 people organizing this one festival, no weekends or holidays, sometimes it is easy to forget what you are doing it all for but when the build up starts and your ideas take shape in reality that all changes. The happy faces of the visitors are the most rewarding to all of us.” Corrine said, “Laughing people.” That’s a nice warm wrap!

Aussprache unter Festival Organisatoren Es ist eine unmögliche Aufgabe die exakte Zeitperiode zu bestimmen in der die Sensation, die wir als psychedelisches Musikfestival kennen geboren wurde. Beginnend mit seinen Technowurzeln in vergangener Zeiten in Goa, hat diese Art der Musik einen Zug nicht tot zu kriegender Fans angezogen. Psychedelische Musik ist ein einzigartiger Geschmack, der ausgesuchte Gaumen beruhigt, aber hat sie mal zugebissen, ist es unmöglich die Tentakel dieses verrückten musikalischen Oktopusses zu entfernen. Die vom psychedelischen Musikfestival gebotene Erfahrung ist extrem speziell, liegt doch der Hauptfokus darauf, Menschen mit der spirituellen Essenz zu verbinden, welche jedem Individuum angeboren ist.

Psytrance ist mehr als ein Musikgenre, es ist ein Lebensstil, eine eigene Kultur und Festivals sind die Feier dieser herrlichen Existenzart. Das bringt uns zu den Festivalorganisatoren und deren Crew; diese zähe Gruppe von Leute, die Tag und Nacht arbeiten, um die perfekte Umgebung für die Tanzenden schaffen, sich in der Musik zu verlieren und dann auf der anderen Seite erfrischt und erneuert wieder raus zu kommen. Jedes Festival hat eine einzigartige Facette, die es von anderen Festivals unterscheidet. Wir sprachen ein paar Festivalorganisatoren an, um mal an die Fakten darüber zu bekommen. Befragt über den Aspekt, der ihr Festival von anderen unterscheidet, meinten die Repräsentativen des Psy-Fi Festivals, “Der frische

7 Spirit, die Location, die liberalen Drogengesetze in unserem Land, das Line-up und das Publikum.” Die Leute vom New Healing Festival sagten, “Wir wollen ein innovatives Festivalkonzept für die Zukunft entwickeln. Unser Festival ist tatsächlich gedacht in vielfältiger Art nachhaltig zu sein. Für die Individuen, die zum Festival kommen! Für die Umwelt. Und für die Gesellschaft. Wir wollen, dass unsere Besucher etwas Langanhaltendes mitnehmen von dem Festival. Wir wollen, dass sie sich gut fühlen und auf der Inspiration für einen gesunden Verstand, Körper und Seele fokussieren. Unsere Philosophie: Alle Wesen sollen glücklich sein!”

Wir präesentieren eine zauberhafte Mischung von Trance, Goa, Psychedelic, ChillOut, Ambient, Dub, Space. So kann eine Menge traditioneller Musik, handgemachte und natürliche Klänge auf dem Festival erfahren werden, während der Hauptfloor sich auf positiven Trance und Goaklänge rund um die Uhr fokussiert. In der Healing Area wird es auch noch viel mehr natürliche Konzerte und Live-Sessions geben.”

Dieses Jahr kuratierten wir das Booking des Healing Weekend zusammen mit unserer Freundin DJane Gaby, die es so ausdrückte: Musik ist ein Transmitter mit dem du eine Menge Information aussenden kannst und viele Herzen in kurzer Zeit erreichst. Es dreht sich alles darum eine hell leuchtende Veränderung in die Welt zu bringen und die Leute ihre Wunden heilen zu lassen. Wir wünschen unseren Besuchern, dass sie die Tanzfläche mit neuen Visionen, Hoffnungen und

8 Gefühlen verlassen.” Corinne vom Summer Never Ends Festival meinte, “Sei es die Musik, die Deko oder die Showkünstler, die Vibes eines Festivals sind eine Mischung all dessen. SNE soll ein Ort für den positiven Austausch zwischen Künstlern sein und nicht eine Plattform sich hervor zu tun.” Es gibt viele Elemente, die zusammen die kollektive Einheit bekannt als Festival erschaffen, aber mehr als alle greifbaren Aspekte ist sich die Mehrheit der Festivalorganisatoren einig in Bezug auf auf die wichtigsten Elemente eines Festivals...Corinne sagte, “Nette Musik, Kunst und Liebe!” Daniel meinte, “Frieden, Liebe und Einheit! Es ist der Spirit der Menschen - der Grund, warum jeder vor Ort da ist!” Wobei Rob sagte, “Das ist einfach, wir können die beste Blaupause machen, d.h. Dekoration, Ausstattung, Line-up etc. etc., aber es wäre nichts ohne den Spirit der Besucher, sie machen das Festival zu dem, was es ist.”

Weil die meisten Festivals draussen am Busen der Mutter Natur laufen, versichert sich jedes Festival, dass die Parties keine Spuren in der Umwelt hinterlassen. Rob sagte, “Wir recyclen alles, was benutzt wurde um das vorherige Festival zu bauen, wir nutzen wiederbenutzbare

Trinkbecher, wir nutzen Öko-Dixies, alles Essen ist biologisch und unser Bier auch, wir hinterlassen keine Spuren, wir nutzen überwiegend LEDs um Energie zu sparen, jeglicher Müll wird getrennt.” Daniel meinte, “Wir haben ein holistisches naturfreundliches Konzept. Zum Beispiel ist unser Catering vegetarisch und das ganze Sozialprogramm fokussiert auf Nachhaltigkeit und Spiritualität.” Wobei Corinne sagte, “Fast alle temporären Gebäude des SNE bestehen aus Elementen, die aufgehoben und wieder benutzt werden. Örtliche Firmen zu beteiligen ist ebenfalls wichtig für uns, zum Beispiel werden die nicht--alkoholischen Getränke der Bar 40km entfernt abgefüllt. Holz wird von örtlichen Sägemühlen gekauft und nicht billig in Baumärkten (ohne Nachhaltigkeit). Wir recyclen fast alles, sei es PET Flaschen oder Zigarettenstummel. Der ganze Platz wird wiederhergestellt bis er wieder genau so aussieht wie wir ihn vorfanden.” Grossartige Ideen zum Nachahmen! Ein Festival machen ist keine einfache Aufgabe, es gibt eine Unzahl an Dingen, die man im Kopf behalten muss, vom Riesigen bis zum Banalen, hier sind zwei Tipps von unseren Freunden den Festivalorganisatoren, Rob sagt, “Neben gutem Line-up,

Location und Deko, finde so viele kleine Extras wie du kannst und habe ein Auge auf den Details.” Und Corinne sagt, “Kontaktiere alle Behördenstellen, alle Polizeistellen und alle, die möglicherweise in anderen Stellen beteiligt sind und von denen du bislang nie was gehört hast. Versuche jede Person bis zu einer Entfernung von 2km vom Platz kontaktieren, der etwas gegen deine Idee haben könntea. Wenn du das alles getan hast, beginne mit der Planung.” Und schließlich, am Ende des Tages gibt es einen Grund dafür, warum Festivalorganisatoren alle Register ziehen, um diesen speziellen Ort für die Trancer zu schaffen; bis zu der Frage, was ist der befriedigendste Aspekt des Festivalmachens? Rob sagt, “Das Endresultat. Wir verbringen das ganze Jahr in unseren Büros, 12-14 Stunden mit einer Gruppe von 8 Leuten arbeitend, um dieses eine Festival organisieren, keine Wochenenden oder Urlaub, manchmal ist es einfach zu vergessen, für was du das alles machst, aber wenn der Aufbau beginnt und deine Ideen Form annehmen, ändert sich das alles. Die glücklichen Gesichter der Besucher sind die grösste Belohnung für uns alle.” Corrine sagte, “Lachende Menschen.” Das ist ein nettes warmes Geschenk!

the original bush doof Once upon a time…electronic music festivals didn’t happen in the forests. There was no such thing. Yes a few events had a moment in the Rock star sun and would plunder the beer swilling faithful with more rock over the rolling hills. Back then VuuV Festival had also only just begun but there was no trance festival industry. Hard to conceive of now, with billowing clouds of dust rising up across planet; the signature of outdoor party mayhem and the stomp of dancing feet. Why even point this out? Because, dear reader; now that there is such a thing as a “Festival Circuit”, and a vibrant outdoor party industry, it’s possible, given the funds, a bit of local knowledge and a modicum of passion, to enter the scene from stage right, declare thyself Mercutio at the feast and thumb thy nose at you sir: “You Sir” being the party consuming public. Yes, yes, this is to be expected, even welcomed, for choice is good, is it not? But this is not us. This is: Hello; our name is earthcore and we’re not Mercutio, and in fact we don’t even have a Shakespearian reference. We entered the story somewhere just after “Once upon a time”. And this is the story of what we did, and how we came to be doing it. Still… Take a team of party goers, who for one reason or another are passionate about the social undercurrent sweeping through the ranks of underground Australia. Once a heaving warehouse party culture, in full flight and fancy; reclaiming the industrial waste and turning it into paradise. Just for a night. The hue and cry is that of: “Let’s get out of it man.” And it’s a cry of desperation, in response to growing up in the great suburban drama. Call us fucking crazy and in many respects we are. But we went with “Let’s get out of it man!” And took to the Australian bush. Countless hours across myriad miles, searching for the real response to stifling city saturation. And in that we offered a different choice. A party experience outside of confined walls. Beyond the artefacts and artifice, and if we’re particularly poetic we’d say it was an armistice, a brief pause for all of us, to get out of “it”, the city, for real. For the punters it would begin with the drive, the dyslexic directions on late printed flyers, the inevitable getting lost, stalling on quiet dirt roads, windows wound down, straining to hear a telltale…folklore now…But that was how it began. The tale of earthcore and how the hills came to echo with the pound of music. Our first parties back in 1993 were attended by a scant few. It was new black polished chrome and it came over the summer like liquid night, crazy new sound, delivered by fringe dwellers that never portended to make money. We did it to explore and host aspects of a culture that we valued, and in that we lay down some fierce roots. As it turned out those roots embedded deep into the ramping up of the international open air party culture. It took 10 years (???) for something to happen that we didn’t really see coming; but when it did, it came on like an avalanche: that impossible moment when that thing you do, have loved and breathed life into; even though it nearly killed you, repeatedly, suddenly crosses the threshold of critical mass. When enough people are so enthusiastic about the thing, their energy and momentum breaks across the shoreline and becomes the new groundswell. 4000 people became 8000 people and the whole of Australia sat up and paid attention. What the hell? earthcore: 8000 people. earthcore: 18,000 people. Laws changed, government agencies became involved. The social experiment and underground oddity woke up a dozing public and for better or worse paved the way for what we aptly refer to as the outdoor party industry. Now 22 years on. earthcore is waving at you across the forest floor. 22 years is a long time; time enough for those seeded roots to delve so deep that even the various saga’s, sweeping epics and an enforced legal layoff couldn’t wash us away. Photography serves as an external memory bank, adding archives of information that would otherwise be lost. The wonders and excesses of technology permits anyone and everyone to call themselves a photographer, however the hallmark of an outstanding lens-man is the ability to capture dimensionality; the emotion, the colours, and the entire magic of the moment. Brilliant photography is the duplication of lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s motion entombed in the stillness of a single frame, and so for this issue we are showcasing three different but superb styles of festival photography

Bobby C. Alkabes Bobby C. Alkabes is a Swiss photographer. She studied in San Francisco where she obtained a BFA in photojournalism. After many years of travel, she finally laid down her lenses, in her studio in Ste-Croix, Switzerland. It is there, that she welcomes a diverse and international clientele. She has worked with many renowned artists such as: HR Giger, Filip Leu and Ajja, amongst other… Seduced by all forms of visual arts, she works extensively for the press as well as for music festivals and… One of her most substantial projects is an ongoing study reflecting the tattoo bearers and their choice of the symbolic; the indelible language of art, etched into skin. Wie oko ist die szene? Es war einmal eine Zeit, da ging man an Sommerwochenenden auf Festivals. Einfach so, aus Jucks und Dollerei, zum Spaß. Heutzutage sieht das etwas anders aus: Für die Reise zu einem Open Air gibt’s eine moralisch anspruchsvolle Rechtfertigung, einen höheren Zweck. Frieden, Heilung und allgemeine Weltverbesserung zählen zu den wichtigsten Stichworten. Und natürlich Öko. An einem Sonntagnachmittag bin ich durchs Camping eines großen Festivals spaziert und der Frage nachgegangen: Wie öko ist die Szene? Da ist ein bunt bemalter Freakfrachter, dessen Buchstabenkürzel auf dem Nummernschild an eine bewusstseinserweiternde Substanz erinnert. Darüber: Ein großer „Fuck Fracking!“ Aufkleber – denn das ist ja wohl eine ganz üble Entwicklung, wie der Besitzer wütend verlauten lässt. Diesen Sommer ist er in ganz Europa unterwegs: Von Ungarn nach Portugal, und dann nach Frankreich und Deutschland. Das volle Programm. Und weil‘s voll öko und für diese Distanzen

Jene Phalanx aus 5kW Projektoren, die ein absolut bewusstseinserweiterndes Fraktalmuster auf die Waldschneise projiziert hat – ganz großes Kino! Und selbst bei dieser Hitze gibt’s zu jeder Tages- und Nachtzeit ein perfekt gekühltes Bier. leben wir hier draußen doch in nachhaltiger Einheit mit Mutter Erde – voll öko. Wie sich rausstellt, sind die Jungs und Mädels dafür extra aus einem ziemlich weit entfernten Land angereist. Billig-Airlines machen es möglich. P.S.: Ich nutze regelmäßig Billig-Airlines, finde orgiastische Lichtinstallationen ganz wunderbar und liebe zu jeder Tages- und Nachtzeit ein perfekt gekühltes Bier. Nur Doppelmoral, die finde ich echt kacke.

How sustainable is the scene? There used to be a time when you spent summer weekends at festivals. Just for fun, just to have a great time with your mates. Today, things are a little different: There‘s a moral superstructure for every festival trip, a higher purpose. Peace, healing, and a better world in general – those are the most common buzzwords. And sustainability, of course. I spent a Sunday afternoon at the camping area of a big festival, asking myself: How sustainable is the scene?

Love, peace, unity... and sustainability, of course. For some days we prove the inconvenient truths of everyday life to be avoidable, we live an alternative reality. Thanks to all those budget airlines we have these days. First I ran across a technicoloured camper van, the letters on its license plate an ironic reference to a mind-altering chemical. Just above that license plate, there‘s a huge sticker: “Fuck Fracking!” Because it‘s seriously fucked-up what they are doing to Mother Nature, as the owner of this camper van proclaims in the most passionate way. This summer he‘s travelling all around Europe: From Hungary to Portugal, and back to France and Germany. Living the dream, one festival after the other. And because it‘s not only

that whole show just explode when that dude played his exclusive gig, that guy they flew in from the other side of the planet? And then there is that phalanx of 5kW projectors which they use to turn the forest into a mind-expanding vortex of fractal patterns at night – absolutely stunning! Last but not least: Isn‘t it great that you can have an ice-cold beer at literally any time of the day? However, the most mind-bending thing is how they manage to do all of this in the most sustainable way, with all those compost toilets, and

tainability, of course. For some days we prove those inconvenient truths of everyday life to be avoidable, we live an alternative reality. Turns out these boys and girls arrived from a faraway country, just for this experience. After all, there‘s so many budget airlines these days. P.S.: I frequently fly budget airlines, I love orgiastic light installations at festivals, and I surely enjoy an ice- cold beer at any time of the day. There‘s only one thing I really don’t like, and that‘s double standards.

Iboga Records, currently one of the biggest labels around can be thanked for the rise of progressive music. The label houses some of the leading artists and high profile acts on the scene. In the past year the label released some very strong releases that are being played heavily. Many party anthems like Captain Hook’s “Mr. Gold” and Emok & Morten Granau – “3rd Eye”, Astrix remix to the epic Ace Ventura & Lish – “The Light”, “Hops of Hades” by Ticon and many more were all released in Iboga Records. The Son Kite album was a great surprise. Vini Vici’s (Aviram Saharai, Matan Kadosh from Sesto Sento) first album marked the duo as the new hot tribal thing around. An Interview with the Master Magus

L I G A O G L GOA GI Goa Gil is the founding father of the Goa Trance scene, and without him to perpetuate the exclusive sound that is the hallmark of this hypnotic style of music, the art-form would have long since dissipated...buried beneath the sands of time. In this interview he shares his journey and views with us.

Luca: How did your journey into Goa Trance start? Goa Gil: I came to India in the beginning of 1970 when I was 18 years old!!! I went to Goa, then travelled around India, met my Guruji in Kashmir, took gurudiksha from him, and then I lived with Yogis in the Himalayas for several years!!! I used to come to Goa for Christmas every year, to visit all my friends I had met on the road, and the seasons in Goa just got longer and longer!!! When I first went to Goa there was only one house with foreigners on Anjuna!!! It was Eight Finger Eddieâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;s house, and maybe twenty of us freaks were staying there with him!!! The first parties were campfires on the beach where we were playing guitars, drums, flutes etc.,

35 and the full moon parties etc. all grew out of that!!! Later on we got some electric equipment started making jam sessions and then bands, and then it went on to full DJ parties with techno music in the early 80’s. We pretty much initiated the whole way of life that Goa came to be, at that time!!!

Even in the early days of Techno/ Trance in Goa, we always had a new collection of music each year!!! In the early years, when there wasn’t enough new music for the whole night, we would play some of the best tracks of the previous year in the beginning, and then, after a certain point, play

We are using Trance music and the Trance Dance Experience to set off a chain reaction in Consciousness, This is what we call „Redefining the Ancient Tribal Ritual for the 21st Century!!! L: Tell us more about the BPMs you use and your mode of playing. GG: I play many BPMs!!! I have always had the same concept: in the beginning I start around 145 BPM and I play some more accessible kind of dancey tracks, to grab everyone and bring them into the story !!! Then slowly it goes up and up in tempo through the night, and finally in the late night it gets quite fast, with a dark and deep ambiance!!! Like many initiations in the mystical world, we go through the dark to come to the light!!! Early night, late night, dawn, morning, mid-day, early afternoon, and sunset all have a different feeling and different sounds for me in my narrative!!! I arrange my music according to my narrative, and the narrative has basically always remained the same, but the music always changes, because every year I have a new collection!!! I don’t like playing a track that’s over a year old, because I have nearly the same tour every year,as I have circles of friends all over the world, who I have been playing for for many years,because they love my music, they love me, and they want to bring me back to their place to play once a year, so I don‘t really want to play the same music I played last year when I come to those places this year !!! L: So you like to explore a lot of new sounds and artists... GG: It’s always been about that!!!

all the new music the rest of the night and morning!!! Every year the music changed in Goa, and for me, I still do the same thing as ever!!! My parties, (what I do in Berlin, California, or many other places in the world),are not unlike the parties I played at in the Bamboo Forest or Disco Valley in the heyday of Goa !!! For me, nothing has changed, only the music keeps changing!!! The bad thing is that we can’t make the same sort of party in India anymor !!! 24 hour party is not possible in India anymore, so my particular way of doing things with the party, I can’t make anymore in Goa !!! The good thing is that most everywhere I play around the world, they have a great sound system, good DJ booth, the crowd is usually really nice, and you don’t have to worry about your girlfriend getting raped when she goes to pee in the bushes !!! There have been many good things about the movement branching out all over the world !!! Now I can go do my thing and bring the Goa Spirit to young people all over the world who can’t make it all the way to Goa !!! L: What is your take on the current status of the scene? GG: I listen to all kinds of music and some of the music is just not what I would call psychedelic, according to my ear, according to my particular taste!!! Also maybe some other people

might say that the music I play is not psychedelic, but most of my followers know it’s psychedelic, because I give them a psychedelic experience through it. As far as the music goes, I have found that some artists are really good when they first start, their first few tracks or so, but then, when they find a formula that works, and has success, they mostly just stick to that formula, making the same type of sounds, and then it becomes predictable, like you’ve heard it all before!!! For me, then it‘s nothing new, nothing stimulating, and it becomes a bit boring, so I always search for new artists who have a new twist on things, who are breaking new ground, and who have new sounds and new beats!!! This endless search keeps things musically interesting for me!!! L: How would you define the word ‘psychedelic’? GG: There is more space inside the music, even with the very fast music also, there is a special space and a special ambiance that makes it psychedelic for me, it’s just not ‘dididididididi’ or “ttrrrrrruuupp”, I find all of that kind of a bit too nervous for my taste!!! I have always said about Goa party, „It’s not a just a disco under the coconut trees, it‘s an initiation!!!” L: Is it important to ingest entheogens to ‘understand’ psytrance? GG: I’m not really sure, because of course there must be some people who indulge, but there are many people who come and dance all night at the party and don’t take anything!!! Some people have been through all of that, now they do yoga etc...and they have full power natural energy !!!They don’t need to get their Tance dance energy from other sources, because they get it from the Cosmic Source itself !!!Also they don’t drink alcohol, as alcohol is the killer!!! L: How would you describe this cosmic experience that you speak about? GG: I will tell you one of the things

36 that I’ve always said: “Since the beginning of time mankind has used music and dance to commune with the Spirit of Nature and the Spirit of the Universe…We are using Trance music and the Trance Dance Experience to set off a chain reaction in Consciousness, This is what we call „Redefining the Ancient Tribal Ritual for the 21st Century!!!”The experience is a oneness with the whole environment around you, with the whole universe, a kind of a state of meditation through the Trance Dance Experience!!! When visiting West Africa with Ariane, we had taken part in ritual dances in villages, with the women dancing, drummers playing, people chanting, through this ritual people become one with the spirit!!! One of the doorways to connecting with God is through

music and dance in Africa!!! They play drum and dance all night in Africa and become one with the spirit, and I am doing the same thing with psychedelic music, the DJ situation, and the trance dance experience !!! That has a lot to do as to why we prefer to play alone and just do our own thing, we don’t play in line-ups or festivals, because we are working to keep the integrity of the Goa Spirit intact!!! Due to particular life experiences, I have a unique perspective on things, so I have found that it has worked much better when I just go and do own my thing the way I have always done it, because I have seen from previous experiences many years ago, that having other people involved usually would bring the energy down !!! When I come to play I bring my whole life of experiences to

it, my whole history, from hanging out with the bands in San Francisco in the 60‘s,meeting the likes of Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, just to name a couple, being heavily into the music, then coming to India, becoming a Baba, being involved with the yogic life and the Indian culture, and then using all my personal history of experiences and my musical knowledge to synthesize something new to give to world: my way of worshipping the Divine, communicating with the public, and giving a higher transmission through the Trance Dance Experience !!! There is a whole lifestyle, a whole way of Being, that supports this ability!!! L: So in a way you’re actually working to liberate people... GG: Generally people are programmed by the culture and the system around them, a lot of people only hear the music on the radio, they read various music magazines, and the whole of their musical taste is defined by that, they think it‘s cool cause they read it in the magazine!!! With the pressures of modern life, the society, and the system, people need a release!!! I am just trying to show another alternative, another way of seeing, and I believe that people should do their duty, whatever it is, but they can then do that duty better with the knowledge that they will be able have some kind of release, and higher experience, at these types of events on the weekends!!! Through these types of experiences, people are then more able to find their own paths… L: You are still playing in DAT. Have you ever considering changing your medium? GG: I prefer DAT to this day!!! Before DAT, we used to play on cassettes, because for international jet-setting nomads, travelling around the world with vinyl and turn-tables was impossible,so everyone I knew travelled around with and played with cassettes !!! I used cassettes for many years, but then when DAT came out, I shifted to

37 DAT because the sound quality was much much better!!! I still believe that the sound quality of DAT is even better than CD, It has a more analog sound, it’s digital, and they have digital to analog converters inside, and somehow, (maybe due to the tape crossing a head for the numbers to be read), on a big system it’s got a more analog sound, a warmer presence, and more bass !!! L: These days anyone can install a DAW and make music...hence there’s a lot of tracks out there, most of which arguably sound the same...Do you think that easy access to the creation of electronic music is positive or negative? GG: It’s a good thing!!! There are perhaps a lot of people making a lot of crap but they are still learning!!! The new technologies give people the option to express their sounds, creating in the process many new artists with new ideas and new visions!!! The new technology helps to stimulate people to express themselves through their particular art forms!!! What is commercial ??? Appealing to the widest possible number of people is commercial success, so you need to come down to the lowest common denominator to appeal to the widest audience!!! I have always said that what I do is not for everybody!!! I have a very eclectic taste in music, and I have been through so much of different music to come to where I am today, so I don’t want to hear something like what I already heard in the 1980’s or 1990‘s !!! If I were into nostalgia, then I would still be listening to Janis, Jimi, The Dead, the music of the 60‘s!!! L: Wonderful Information! Thank you for your time! Any message for your fans? wurden einfach länger und länger!!! Als ich das erste Mal nach Goa ging, gab es in Anjuna nur ein Haus für Ausländer!!! Das war Eight Finger Eddies Haus und vielleicht zwanzig von uns Freaks lebten bei ihm!!! Die ersten Partys waren Lagerfeuer am Strand, wo wir Gitarre, Trommeln, Flöte etc. spielten und die Vollmondpartys etc. alles ging daraus hervor!!! Später kam elektrisches Equipment dazu und wir begannen mit Jam-Sessions und dann Bands, und dann ging es hin zu

kompletten DJ Partys mit Techno in den frühen 80ern. Wir haben zu dieser Zeit im Grunde den ganzen Goa Lebensstil initiert!!! L: Erzähle uns mehr über deine BPM und deine Art zu spielen. GG: Ich spiele viele BPM!!! Ich habe immer das selbe Konzept gehabt: am Anfang starte ich mit so 145 BPM und spiele ein paar eingängigere Tanztracks, um alle zu packen und bringe sie in die Geschichte!!! Dann geht es langsam mit dem Tempo höher und höher durch die Nacht und letztendlich in der späten Nacht wird es richtig schnell, mit dunkler und tiefer Ambiance!!! Wie bei vielen Initiationen in die mystische Welt, durchqueren wir das Dunkel um ins Licht zu gelangen!!! Frühe Nacht, späte Nacht, Morgendämmerung, Morgen, Mittag, früher Nachmittag und Sonnenuntergang haben alle unterschiedliche Gefühle und unterschiedliche Klänge für mich in meiner Erzählung!!! Ich arrangiere meine Musik entlang meiner Erzählung und meine Erzählung ist prinzipiell stets die selbe geblieben, aber die Musik ändert sich immer, weil ich jedes Jahr

eine neue Kollektion habe!!! Ich mag es nicht Tracks zu spielen, die älter als ein Jahr sind und da ich jedes Jahr fast die selbe Tour mache und Freunde auf den ganzen Welt habe, die selbst seit vielen Jahren spielen und weil sie meine Musik leben, lieben sie mich

einem bestimmten Punkt, all die neue Musik für den Rest der Nacht und am Morgen!!! Jedes Jahr änderte sich die Musik in Goa und für mich, ich mache noch das selbe Ding wie immer!!! Meine Partys, (in Berlin, Kalifornien oder vielen anderen Orten der Welt),

Wir nutzen Trancemusik und die Trancetanzerfahrung, um eine Kettenreaktion im Bewusstsein auszulösen, das nennen wir „Das Uralte Ritual der Stämme für das 21. Jahrhundert neu definieren”!!! und wollen mich jedes Jahr einmal auf ihren Platz bringen, deshalb will ich wirklich nicht die selbe Musik spielen, die ich im letzten Jahr bereits dort gespielt hatte !!! L: Also entdeckst du eine Menge neue Klänge und Künstler... GG: Darum ging es stets!!! Sogar in den frühen Tagen des Techno/Trance in Goa, hatten wir jedes Jahr stets eine neue Musikkollektion!!! In den frühen Jahren als es nicht genügend neue Musik für die ganze Nacht gab, spielten wir einige der besten Tracks des vorherigen Jahres am Anfang und dann, ab

sind nicht anders als die Partys, die ich im Bamboo Forest oder Disco Valley zu den Hochzeiten in Goa spielte!!! Für mich hat sich nichts geändert, bloss die Musik verändert sich weiter!!! Das Schlechte ist, wir können nicht länger diese Art von Partys in Indien machen !!! 24 Stunden Party ist in Indien nicht länger möglich, daher kann ich meine Art Party zu machen in Goa nicht länger machen!!! Das Gute ist, dass ich fast überall, wo ich auf der Welt spiele, sie ein tolles Soundsystem haben, einen guten DJ Platzl, die Meute ist gewöhnlich sehr nett und du musst dich nicht sorgen, dass deine Freundin beim

L: Was ist deine Meinung über den gegenwärtigen Zustand der Szene? GG: Ich höre mit alle Arten von Musik an und manche Musik ist nicht das, was ich psychedelisch nenne, für mein Ohr, für meinen speziellen Geschmack!!! Auch könnten manche Leute sagen, dass die Musik, die ich spiele nicht psychedelisch ist, aber die meisten meiner Fans wissen, sie ist psychedelisch, weil ich ihnen dadurch eine psychedelische Erfahrung vermittle. Soweit es Musik angeht habe ich herausgefunden, dass einige Künstler sehr gut sind, wenn sie anfangen, die ersten Tracks oder so, aber dann, wenn sie die Formel die funktioniert gefunden haben und sie Erfolg hat, bleiben sie bei der Formel, machen die selbe Art von Klängen, und dann wird es voraussagbar, was du schon alles vorher gehört hast!!! Für mich ist es dann nichts neues, nichts stimulierendes und es wird etwas langweilig, daher suche ich stets nach neuen Künstlern, die einen neuen Ansatz an die Sache haben, die zu neuen Ufern aufbrechen und neue Klänge und neue Beats haben!!! Diese endlose Suche macht die Sache musikalisch interessant für mich!!! L: Wie würdest du das Word ‘psychedelisch’ definieren? GG: Da ist mehr Raum in der Musik, auch bei der sehr schnellen Musik, da ist ein spezieller Raum und eine spezielle Ambiance, die es für mich psychedelisch macht, es ist nicht nur ‘dididididididi’ oder “ttrrrrrruuupp”, ich finde das für meinen Geschmack etwas zu nervös!!! Ich habe über die Goa Party stets gesagt, „Es ist nicht

L: Ist es wichtig Entheogene einzunehmen, um Psytrance zu verstehen? GG: Ich bin mir nicht wirklich sicher, weil da natürlich ein paar Leute sein müssen, die dem nachgeben, aber da kommen viele Leute, die die ganze Nacht tanzen und nichts nehmen!!! Einige Leute haben das alles hinter sich, jetzt machen sie Yoga etc...und sie haben volle natürliche Energie am Start!!! Sie brauchen ihre Trancedance-Energie nicht aus anderen Quellen beziehen, weil sie es von der Kosmischen Quelle selbst beziehen!!! Auch trinken sie keinen Alkohol, weil Alk der Killer ist!!!

Sie spielen Trommeln und tanzen die ganze Nacht in Afrika und werden eins mit dem Spirit und ich mache das selbe mit der psychedelischen Musik, dem DJiing sowie der Trancetanzerfahrung!!! Das hat eine Menge damit zu tun, warum wir es vorziehen alleine zu spielen und bloss unser eigenes Ding zu machen, wir spielen nicht in Line-ups oder Festivals, weil wir arbeiten, um die Integrität des Goa Spirit intakt zu halten!!! die Leute eher fähig ihren eigenen Weg zu finden... L: Du spielst noch in DAT. Jemals mit dem Gedanken gespielt das Medium zu wechseln? GG: Ich ziehe DAT bis zu diesem Tag vor!!! Vor DAT spielten wir auf Kassetten, weil wir internationale Jet-Set-Nomaden waren, mit Vinyl und Mischpulten um die Welt zu reisen war unmöglich, daher spielte und reiste jeder, den ich kannte mit Kassetten!!! Ich nutzte Kassetten lange Jahre, aber als DAT raus ging ich zu DAT über, weil die Soundqualität viel besser war!!! Ich glaube noch, dass die Soundqualität des DAT sogar besser ist als CD, sie haben mehr analogen Klang, ist digital und drinnen sind digital auf analog Konverter und irgendwie, (vielleicht weil das Tape über eine Zahl von Köpfen um die Zahlen zu lesen läuft), auf einem grossen System hat es mehr analogen Klang, eine wärmere Präsenz und mehr Bass !!! L: Dieser Tage kann jeder DAW installieren und Musik machen...und so gibt es eine Menge Tracks da draussen, von denen die meisten wohl gleich klingen...Denkst du, dass einfacher Zugang zur Erschaffung von elektronischer Musik positiv oder negativ ist?

GG: Es ist eine gute Sache!!! Bestimmt gibt es eine Menge Leute, die Mist machen, aber sie lernen noch!!! Die neuen Technologien geben Leute die Möglichkeit ihre Klänge auszudrücken und kreieren in dem Prozess viele neue Künstler mit neuen Ideen und neuen Visionen!!! Die neue Technologie hilft die Leute zu stimulieren sich auszudrücken durch ihre bestimmte Kunstform!!! Was kommerziell ist??? Sich an die grösste Anzahl von Leuten zu wenden ist kommerzieller Erfolg, daher benötigst du den niedrigsten gemeinsamen Nenner, um das breiteste Publikum anzusprechen!!! Ich habe stets gesagt, dass das, was ich mache nicht für jeden ist!!! WHAT LIVE IS ABOUT Pressing the play button, involuntary stage diving, and the dangers of interacting with the audience. A chat with the Trance rockers known as McCoy’s S.U.N. Project Rob: Live Act - An extremely popular term that is, let‘s say, open to interpretation... Is it actually possible to play electronic Trance music live? McCoy: Well, if you‘re in studio and you have a title with 80 audio tracks, than you‘d probably need 80 guys on stage to really play it live. Of course that‘s not possible. We have some live instruments, which means hand-played instruments: An electronic guitar, e-drums, and of course SLAG‘s legendary „Trigger Finger“, which allows us to add effects to our audio tracks in real-time.

SLAG: We stick to 2 or 3 live musicians, but as you might know there‘s other projects who have way more people on stage. In the end it depends on your concept as a group. For us, the computer is not only a medium, but a band member. We humanize it, and sometimes we alienize it. I‘m currently trying to pierce it, but it still tries to resist. Well, I tried to freak it out and said we‘ll replace him with a CD – but then I thought: Maybe we should just pay him more? After all, he‘s a legend! Rob: Looking at any festival line-up this summer, there‘s more live acts than anything else...

McCoy: It‘s a sad story, but I guess 95% of those guys are laptoppers. Pushing the play button on their laptop is pretty much the only thing that happens „live“ - it‘s just like starting a CD player. If you ask us, that‘s not what “live” is about. Actually we are still wondering why the term “live” became established for this kind of performance at all. SLAG: I could tell you some really funny stories, about what people do, or dare to do, just to look important and cool on stage. There‘s some nice videos out there that show exactly what certain “live acts” are doing. Funny shit, check it out! But actually it‘s sad. Some-

43 times it‘s not easy to see whether that dude on stage is doing something “live” or not. Some artists set up loads of equipment, but in the end it‘s just playback. I guess everybody has to decide what‘s still fair, and what not. People often ask me if I play live, because I don‘t have any cable plugged into my guitar. I use a wireless transmitter.

Rob: Exactly how does your preparation for a live act of McCoy‘s S.U.N. Project look like? Do you rehearse? SLAG: We try to optimize everything, to get a maximum of energy out of our show – that includes the selection of songs, the arrangement during the set... it‘s all about kicking people‘s asses, about creating a really catchy Goa groove. However, it‘s important not to make it too complex – that‘s a major reason for problems on stage. We really focus on the live show, we try to implement new elements all the time. McCoy: When we set our instruments on fire – that‘s a thing we rehearse every now and then. Just to avoid any serious fire on stage. McCoy: Also, wenn du im Studio bist und einen Titel mit 80 Audiospuren hast, dann brauchtest du wahrscheinlich 80 Typen, um das auf der Bühne wirklich live zu spielen. Natürlich ist das nicht möglich. Wir haben ein paar live Instrumente, was bedeutet handgespielte Instrumente: Eine elektronische Gitarre, E-drums und, na klar, SLAGs legendärer „Trigger Finger“, welcher uns erlaubt Effekte zu unseren Audiotracks in Real-Zeit hinzuzufügen. 45 eigentlich ist es traurig. Manchmal ist es nicht einfach zu sehen, ob der Typ etwas “live” macht oder nicht. Einige Künstler stellen ne Menge Equipment auf, aber am Ende ist es doch nur Playback. Ich denke, jeder muss sich entscheiden, was noch fair ist und was nicht. Leute fragen mich, wenn ich live spiele, warum ich nicht das Kabel in meine Gitarre gesteckt habe. Ich benutze einen kabellosen Transmitter.

Rob: Genau wie sieht eine Vorbereitung für einen Live Act des McCoy‘s S.U.N. Project aus? Übt ihr?

SLAG: Absolut, ja. Besonders der Trigger Finger ist manchmal ein bisschen problematisch. Abhängig von der Bildschirmsituation, abhängig davon wie gut ich mich hören kann, manchmal kam ich einfach zu spät rein. Interagieren ist nochmal kritischer: Manchmal springe ich von der Bühne runter, ins Publikum, schnappe mir ein zufällige Person und lade Leute zur Interaktion ein. Manchmal geht das furchtbar schief. Manche Leute werden voll euphorisch, sie sind plötzlich auf ner Mission, wenn sie realisieren, dass sie wirklich den Sound manipulieren können. Diese Gestalten probieren wahllos Tasten aus – oder du hast nicht nur eine, sondern plötzlich mehrere Hände auf dem Controller... [lacht]. Oh ja, zu dunkle Sonnenbrillen – sie können unfreiwilliges Stage-diving auslösen. Sieht total lustig aus, ich habe es auf diversen Smartphones nach der Show gesehen. Nette Art mit dem Publikum in Kontakt zu treten, das ist sicher.

SOLAR UNITED NATIVES 20.July – 26.July • Hungary Bumps in the road to paradise With only 1 month left for preparations, Solar United Natives is in serious turbulences: Either the gathering formerly known as S.U.N. Festival finds more supporters, or it will be limited to only 1,000 visitors.

Held for the first time in 2013, Solar United Natives gained euphoric feedback from the international festival family and grew rapidly, but it also had to struggle with difficulties behind the scenes. Their 100.000 Facebook fanpage was shut down, and despite the success of their events unpaid bills piled up in the office. Eventually some crew left the organization team disappointed. Now the crew hit the probably worst bump in the road: „The problem is that licensing a festival with more than 1,000 people causes very high legal costs, which are not proportional to the amount of guests. In order to cover the costs, organizers are forced to make a festival a lot bigger - or to keep it under 1,000 people.“ Currently Solar United Natives is organized by „a non-profit NGO, that has a long history of protecting Nature, promoting arts, and educating a higher state of consciousness. The Mély Mosoly Alapítvány (Deep Smile Foundation) started the local forest cleaning movement on Earth Day in Hungary more than 15 years ago, and they have been organizing many different events for almost 20 years (Civil Falu, Deep Smile Café, World Revolution, Symbiote, Live Act Nights,

Magic Garden, Earth Dance, Solar Seeds, just to name a few). Once they took part in organizing Ozora and S.U.N. Festival, and now they are trying to save the original S.U.N.“ This year they introduced a unique membership system: You don‘t just buy a ticket, you become part of the project and have the right of co-determination. For instance, members were allowed to vote for artists or details of the festival infrastructure. „It‘s more than a summer festival, it’s a lifelong project with various events. Auf geht’s, ab geht’s, 3 Tage wach… Oder auch nicht, elektronische Musikkultur geht heutzutage nämlich auch anders: Auf den „Morning Gloryville“ Partys drehen Festangestellte mit ordentlich Bio-Saft und fair gehandeltem Kaffee im Blut noch vor der Arbeit zu Techno frei. Und auch unsere Szene, wo Pilze und fahrradfahrende Chemiker ikonisch verehrt werden, hat nun ein Event, das sich nicht als Rauschpartie versteht – und einen Akzent auf nicht-substanzinduzierte Bewusstseinserweiterung setzt. Sacred Garden nennt es sich, ein „Meditativ-Spirituelles Kultur Treffen für die ganze Familie“. Übermäßiger Konsum ist unerwünscht, wer sich im letzten Jahr daneben benommen hat ebenso. Tanzen und Musik sind natürlich zentraler Bestandteil, sogar mit Kinder-Dancefloor. In the case of Switzerland: Quality. Cheese, chocolate, penknives, scenic views... everything is just ridiculously perfect. That said, it’s exciting to see that there’s many festivals in Switzerland this year. We want to talk a little more about two of them: One Love and Summer Never Ends, both being held in the same alpine Nature Park. One Love had it’s debut last year, and quite everybody who’s been there was quite stoked.
