Es ist fast ein Jahr vergangen seit unserem letzten Special über den legalen Erwerb von Musik im Internet – und es hat sich viel getan. Vor allen Dingen bei der Auswahl: Mittlerweile gibt es immer mehr Psychedelic Trance zum legalen Download Shops wie Cytopia haben sich auf unseren Style spezialisiert, und auch bei Mainstream-Läden wie iTunes findet man immer mehr Psytrance-Artists. Aber auch die Quantität erreicht erfreuliche Ausmaße. Waren damals noch oft zu wenig Tracks im Angebot, kann man heute problemlos seinen kompletten Bedarf online und digital decken, sofern man sich von den Zwängen physischer Tonträger befreit hat.

Preislich variieren die Anbieter noch sehr. Die Bandbreite reicht von wenigen Cent bis zu knapp 3 Euro für einen Track. Wobei das Mittelmaß zwischen einem und 1,50 Euro liegt. Einige Shops unterscheiden zwischen News, Promos und Bestandsware, die ersten beiden Kategorien haben in einer festgelegten Zeit einen jeweils höheren Preis. Hervorzuheben wären Vonyc, die mit 1,29 Euro einen sehr fairen Ein-

heitspreis verlangen, und Beatport, bei denen man ganze Alben zu Sonderkonditionen bekommt. Wenn man sich für etwas entschieden hat, geht’s zum Bezahlen. Da war eine ganze Weile für viele der Spaß zu Ende. Eine Kreditkarte hat nun mal nicht jeder, da helfen dann Bezahlsysteme wie Paypal oder herkömmliche Banküberweisungen. nant Vibes geben den Ebay-Dienst Paypal zur Wahl, iTunes geht einen eigenen Weg mit Click & Buy. Beatport schießt sich wie viele andere kleinere und sogar dickere Fische im großen Downloadteich etwas ins Aus, leider kommt man dort um die Kreditkarte nicht herum. Ist der Sound einmal auf dem Rechner, gibt es endlich den ersehnten Musikgenuss. Oder auch nicht. iTunes zum Beispiel erlaubt das Abspielen nur innerhalb seiner Software, ohne die man auch gar nicht einkaufen kann, und auf eigenen Geräten wie dem iPod. Wobei auch dabei die Kopiermöglichkeiten beschränkt sind. Das DRM (Digital Rights Management) und regelt technisch die Benutzung und Weitergabe der geladenen Musik. Vonyc benutzt zwar keine Beschränkung, aber ein digitales Wasserzeichen. So ist beim Sharen der Urheber der Weitergabe zurückverfolgbar. Trotz der kleinen Hürden und auch grade durch sie findet man schnell zu einem Anbieter, bei dem man sich wohlfühlt. Benutzung und Vorhörfunktionen sind oft sehr gut, einfach unschlagbar sind die Vielfalt und das bequeme Aussuchen von zu Hause aus. Zum Antesten haben wir eine kleine Tabelle mit den Fakten einiger interessanter Shops zusammengestellt. Online gibt’s eine ausführlichere Linkliste der Shops, die wir uns angeschaut haben.

Almost a year has gone by since our last special on legal access to music online – and a lot has happened. Especially in the variety being offered: By now more and more Psychedelic Trance can be legally downloaded Shops such a Cytopia have specialized on our style, and also mainstream shops such as iTunes increasingly feature Psychedelic Trance artists. Also the quantity available is reaching thrilling proportions. Initially too few tracks were offered online, but today it’s no problem to satisfy ones complete demand for music digitally online, especially if one is free of the need for physical storage media. Prices vary wildly between suppliers. The bandwidth spans a few cents to 3 euros per track, whereby the average lies around 1,50 euro for a track. Some shops make a distinction between new, promo, and older stock, and the first two categories usually have a higher price for a certain time period. Worthy of mention here are Vonyc which with 1,29 euro have a very fair unity price per track, and Beatport where it is possible to obtain entire albums at a reduced price. Once a selection has been made it’s time to pay. This is where the fun came to a screeching halt for a lot of people for quite some time. Not everyone has a credit card, and this is where payment systems such as Paypal or traditio-

nal bank transfers come to the rescue. A forerunner in this aspect is Vonyc that offers all possibilities, Cytopia and Resonant Vibes offer a Paypal service, while iTunes goes their own way with Click & Buy. Beatport as well as other small and even some big contenders let themselves down; there’s no way around a credit card here. Once the tracks are on the hard disk finally the desired music enjoyment awaits. Or not. iTunes for example only allows the reproduction of music bought there inside their own software, without which one can’t even buy the music, or on proprietary players like their iPod. The possibilities for making copies are also limited. DRM (Digital Rights Management) controls the use and sharing of downloaded music. Vonyc doesn’t apply any limitations, however they do insert a digital watermark. In this case the user who initially shares the files can be traced. Even with these minor quibbles, or perhaps because of them, everyone will quickly find the supplier where she or he feels at home. Practical use and pre listening functions are generally very good; the choice on offer and the comfort of selecting music from your own home is simply unbeatable. Auflegen mit CD und Vinyl war gestern, digitales Auflegen liegt voll im Trend. Immer mehr reisende DJs lassen ihr Case zu Hause und haben einen Laptop dabei. Doch welche Software soll man nutzen? Mit Native Instruments’ Traktor und Ableton Live haben sich zwei Favoriten herausgebildet, die eigentlich die Tools der Wahl sein könnten, jedoch beide Stärken und Schwächen besitzen. Wir wollen aufzeigen, wie Du das reale Pitch- und Mixgefühl von Traktor mit den zahlreichen Möglichkeiten von Ableton Live verbinden kannst. sogar zu empfehlen ist. In dieses Setup kann man auch Hardwarecontroller oder sogar Final Scratch einbinden. (psyfly)

Dazu ist es notwendig, Trakor den Takt angeben zu lassen (Master) und über die Funktion des External Sync ein Steuersignal an Live (Slave) zu senden. In der Praxis stellt man hierzu eine Midi-Verbindung über einen beliebigen Port aus Traktor zu Ableton her. Diese kann virtuell mit Software wie Midiyoke (nur PC) oder über einen real verfügbaren Midi-Out und Midi-In etwa an der Soundkarte erfolgen. Generell muss der Ein- und Ausgang mit einem Kabel überbrückt werden. Steht eine Verbindung, blinkt in Ableton das obere kleine Kästchen neben dem EXT-Button gelb. Nun noch im Traktor-Menü Midi-Clock den Master und den Send sowie in Live den EXT-Knopf aktivieren - dann laufen richtig gewarpte Tracks im Ableton beatsynchron mit den Tracks aus Traktor. Ob sie wirklich synchron laufen, erkennst Du an der Bpm-Anzeige in Live. Sie verändert sich, wenn Du in Traktor etwas änderst. Funktioniert dann auch mit zwei Computern, was wegen der Übersichtlichkeit

Eine Produktionssoftware zum Auflegen zu benutzen klingt im ersten Moment komisch, doch wer die Möglichkeiten von Ableton Live kennengelernt hat, der ist meist sehr schnell in sie verliebt. Ableton bietet alle Funktionen, die man benötigt, so kann man einen DreibandEqualizer einstellen, der dem eines Mixers recht ähnlich ist. Flanger, Filter und viele andere Effekte stehen für nahezu unendliche Variationen der Klangverformung zur Verfügung. Diese können dann auf jeden Audiokanal gelegt werden, so dass man sie bequem per Midi-Controller steuern kann. Über den Crossfader am Masterausgang kann man so ein reales Mixgefühl erhalten. Auch wenn Ableton über eine sehr gute Geschwindigkeitserkennung verfügt, ist es immer notwendig, jeden Track einmalig zu bearbeiten. Dazu stellt man erst den Startpunkt (Cue) ein und von da aus justiert man die einzelnen Geschwindigkeitsmarker (warpen), bis der Beat synchron zum eingeschalteten Metronom läuft. Dies geht auch automatisch, erfordert aber je nach Art des Tracks auch mal manuelle Eingriffe. So kannst Du recht schnell ein großes MusikSortiment aufgebauen, um damit

direkt und intuitiv zu mixen. Darüber hinaus kann man eine Vielzahl von anderen Tonerzeugern nutzen, um seinem Set so einen deutlichen Live-Charakter zu verleihen. Pflicht ist dabei eine Soundkarte mit zwei getrennten Ausgängen - um auch vorhören zu können. (psyfly)

Creativity for Digital DJs DJ ing with CD s or Vinyl is a thing of the past, digital DJ ing is rapidly gaining popularity. More and more DJ s on the move are leaving their cases at home and instead choose to carry a laptop. But which software should be used? Native Instruments’s Traktor and Ableton Live are the two contenders that have crystalized as the clear favorites, and each could be the tool, however both show strengths and weaknesses. We would like to explore how you can combine the real time pitch and mix feeling of Traktor with the numerous possibilities offered by Ableton Live. In order to do this it’s neccesary to let Traktor determine the tempo (master) and by using the external sync function send a timing signal to Ableton Live (slave). Practically speaking this means you set up a MIDI connection from any available port from Traktor to Ableton. This can be done

virtually using a software such as Midiyoke (PC only) or via any available hardware MIDI port on for example the soundcard. Generally speaking a connection needs to be made from out to in using a standard MIDI cable. Once this connection is set up the small box next to the EXT button lights up yellow in Ableton. All that remains to be done is to activate the MIDI clock and master setting in the MIDI-clock menu of Traktor, and to press the EXT button in Ableton. From here on correctly warped tracks in Ableton will play perfectly in sync with tracks running in Traktor. Wether both systems are synced can be made out from the BPM display in Ableton. It should change the moment you change the tempo in Traktor. This technique will also work using two computers, which is highly recomendable in order to maintain a better overview. It’s also possible to integrate hardware controllers in this setup or even Final Scratch. (psyfly)

Initially it may sound strange to use a production oriented software to play DJ sets, however anyone that has seen the possibilities of Ableton Live quickly becomes enamoured with it. Ableton offers all functions needed, for example a three band EQ very similar to that of a standard DJ mixer. Flanger, filters and many other effects are available for seemingly endless variations and sound transformation. All of these can be placed on individual channels and one can

comfortably control them using a MIDI controller. Using the crossfader on the main output buss it’s possible to obtain a very realistic DJ feel. Even though Ableton contains very sophisticated tempo recognition, it’s always neccesary to manually fine tune every track. In order to do this set the start point on the first kick (marked as a yellow 1), let Ableton recognise the tempo and possibly make manual adjustments to one of the warp markers towards the end of the track (most Trance tracks dont have tempo changes). The other markers will follow. Once the track runs tightly in sync with the metronome in Ableton thoughout the pre roll point (marked as an arrow) can be pulled back to include the intro which often throws off the otherwise rocksteady tempo recognition. Once this is done it is possible to build up a large music library which can be mixed directly and intuitively. Beyond this it’s possible to use a multitude of sound generators and add a live touch to your set. Absolutely essential is a soundcard with at least two separate stereo outputs in order to have cue ing facilities. (psyfly, remix by Prahlad)

Zu den beiden im vorigen Heft vorgestellten Geräten Torq Conective und X-Session Pro gesellt sich jetzt noch eine DJ-Steuerkonsole. Per USB kann damit jede midifähige Software angesteuert werden, M-Audio liefert aber auch die hauseigene Software Torq gleich zum Xponent dazu. Ein Mixer ist genauso an Bord wie die obligatorische Soundkarte. M-Audio wants to take the DJ market by storm. The two units Torq Conective and X-Session Pro featured in the magazine last month are now joined by a DJ control surface. Any Midi controllable software can be used by it via USB, while M-Audio also supply their inhouse DJ software Torq that is delivered with every Xponent controller. A mixer is also on board as well as the obligatory sound card. The jog wheels are touch sensitive and, unusually situated above the other control elements. Ab Februar gibt es von Faderfox einen neuen und einen überarbeiteten Midi-Controller für die Bedienung von Ableton Live. Der LV2 hat einen Crossfader verpasst bekommen, was die DJ-Fraktion unter den AbletonUsern begeistern wird, und heißt nun LC2. Neu ist der LD2, der als Zusatzkonsole mit 16 Drehpotis ausgestattet ist, um somit den vollen Funktionsumfang von Ableton besser ausnutzen zu können. Für Mac und PC. Preis je 219 Euro.

Die VCI-100 ist eine USB-MidiSteuerkonsole zum Abspielen und Bearbeiten von Sound auf dem Rechner. The VCI-100 is an USB-Midi control surface for playing and editing music on a computer. Unser DJ-Spion hat neben den hier vorgestellten Geräten noch interessante weitere Schmankerl ausgemacht. Allen & Heath bringt mit dem Xone S2 endlich einen preislich konkurrenzfähigen 19“-Mixer heraus. Es ist – irgendwie anders. Klar, es ist Psytrance. Full-On, wenn auch melodisch. Klar, es ist, man hört es raus, aus Israel. Aber da ist mehr. Der Sound von Pop Stream aka Yinon Oved weckt den Wunsch, ein Flummi zu sein. Zu hopsen, zu springen, durch die Ecken zu fetzen … und zu lachen!

Floating on a Pop Stream

Der 25-jährige Yinon hat eine Art, die Bässe springen zu lassen, das Ganze mit zwerchfellkitzligen Melodien zu toppen und Samples einzustreuen, die einen grinsend den Kopf schütteln lassen (man denke an das genial-unsinnige »Birrrr« in »Fuego en la Rumba«!). Jetzt liegt mit »Railways« das zweite Album von Pop Stream vor, ein bisschen straighter, aber mit demselben Humor gesegnet. »Schön, dass es dir auffällt«, grinst Yinon. »Ich mag Humor, und oft bestimmt er meine Handlungen; vielleicht kommt daher das humorvolle in meiner Musik - es ist einfach von Anfang an drin in meinen Tracks, ich pushe da nichts.« Gefragt, wie er seine Musik in ein Gemälde übersetzen würde, sagt er: »Auf jeden Fall für jeden Track ein anderes. Wenn ich aber für meinen gesamten Sound ein Bild malen müsste, dann wäre es wohl ein knallbunter Vergnügungspark, voll von Attraktionen.« Seit neun Jahren produziert Yinon Musik, anfangs mit der simpelsten Software, begeistert von elektronischen Klängen, die er im Radio hörte. Psy-

trance beeindruckte ihn am meisten. Anfangs wollte er Trance mit Pop verbinden, mit richtigen Arrangements, Chorus und großartiger Produktion. »Pop hat unter allen Musikrichtungen am wenigsten Beschränkungen, die Grenzen sind fließend, fast alles ist möglich«, erzählt Yinon. Dann aber fand er heraus, dass das gar nicht so einfach war, seine ersten Versuche in der Richtung gerieten eher langweilig, findet er. »Später einmal.« Vielleicht daher die fröhlichen Einsprengsel auf seinem ersten Album »Into Orbit« auf Spektrum/Phonokol, das bei Kritikern wie Tänzern gleichermaßen gut ankam. »Ein erfolgreicher Track ist

für einen Musiker ein Stück Unsterblichkeit“, sagt er. »Aber es ist schwer zu sagen, wie die einzelnen Bestandteile eines Tracks bestimmte Gefühle auslösen; das herauszufinden fasziniert mich immer wieder.“ Auf dem neuen Album »Railways«, gerade bei Vision Quest erschienen, hat Pop Stream jedem Track eine Emotion zugeordnet. Daher auch der Albumname: Geradeaus wie die Eisenbahn sollen die Tracks Emotionen auslösen. Aber eben nur den einen »glücklichen Gedanken« oder die eine »dramatische Atmosphäre« unterstreichen. Das Ergebnis sind Tracks voller Melodien und auch voller Lyrics, fünf der zehn Tracks sind für Psy recht stimmgewaltig. Und wegen dieser Liebe zur Stimme ist auch Michele Adamson mit von der Partie. Manchmal ist ein Schritt in andere Musikgenres deutlich zu hören geht nicht gibt’s nicht, scheint ein gutes Motto für Yinon zu sein. Ein Motto, das auch bei Kooperationen mit Psy-Artists wie Domestic Team, Pro-

toculture, Triptych, Alternative Control funktioniert. Sein größter Traum? »Ein Teil ist ja schon wahr geworden: ein Künstler zu sein. Wo ich mich in ein paar Jahren sehe? Ich muss sagen, dass Hollywood mich wirklich anzieht und hochwertige Post-Produktionen nach etwas klingt, wo ich gerne dabei wäre.« Hollywood? Meint er das ernst? Wie auch immer, `n büschen von Yinons humorigem Psy könnte die Filmindustrie vertragen … ;-) It is – somehow different. Yes it’s Psytrance. Full-On, even if melodic. For sure, one can hear it’s from Israel. But there is more. The sound of Pop Stream aka Yinon Oved stirs the desire to be a bouncy ball. To hop, jump, and whizz around the corners … and to laugh! 25 year old Yinon has a way of making the bass jump, topping it with belly-tickling melodies, and sprinkling it with samples that make one shake one’s head with a grin (for example the brilliant non sensical »Birrrr« in »Fuego en la Rumba« – the track name alone!). Now with »Railways«, the second album by Pop Stream has arrived. A bit straighter, but blessed with the same sense of humour. »I‘m glad it‘s recognized.« Yinon grins. »I like humor and tend to let humor rule my actions; probably this derives the humor in the music and it’s just composed within

the tracks without me forcing it.« Asked how he would »translate« his tracks into a painting he says: »I think it would be a different painting and colours for each track, but if I‘ll have to draw them all in one than I guess it would have to be a theme park full of rides, balloons, giant spinning mugs and a nice swinging rollercoaster!« Yinon has been producing music for 9 years, initially with the simplest software, fascinated by electronic sounds which he heard on the radio. It was Psytrance that left the deepest impression. In the beginning he wanted to fuse Trance with Pop, with proper arrangements, a chorus and polished production. »Pop has the least inhibitions among all music styles; its boundaries are flexible, so almost anything is possible.« Yinon explains. The he realised that this was not at all easy, and he felt his first productions in this direction were somehow boring. Regardless, Yinon hasn’t given up on this thought – perhaps sometime in the future he says. Possibly this is where the happy details originate on his first album »Into Orbit« on Spektrum/Phonokol, which was warmly received by critics and dancers alike. »A successful track for a musician is a piece of immortality,« he comments. »But it is difficult to say how individual parts of a track produce emotions, figuring this out always fascinates me.« On the new album »Railways« which will appear on Vision Quest, Pop

Stream has associated every track 15 with an emotion. That’s were the album name stems from: Straight ahead like a railroad (»or the cavalry«) the new album should stimulate emotions, but also reinforce the one »happy thought« or »dramatic atmosphere«. The outcome: his tracks are full of melodies and also filled with lyrics: five of the 10 tracks are heavily voice focussed for Psytrance. Due to this love for voices, Michele Adamson is also on board, while a moment later it’s a dialogue sample from a Cubase tutorial. Sometimes a step into other music directions can clearly be heard – there’s no such thing as »can’t be done«, would be a good motto for Yinon. A motto that is also applicable to cooperations with other Psy artists such as Domestic Team, Protoculture, Triptych, and Alternative Control. His biggest dream? »Part of my youth dream was to reach the goal I already achieved; it was becoming an artist. Regarding to the followings and where I would want to see myself in a few years, I would just have to say that *Hollywood* is really appealing for me and high class post production sounds like something I would want to be part of.« Hollywood? OOOD A different Side of Psytrance

»Bei Musik musst Du open-minded sein, und das Wundervolle am Psytrance ist, dass Du alle möglichen Stile verarbeiten kannst, ohne die Aufmerksamkeit und das Interesse der Leute zu verlieren,« sagt Ramsay Melhuish. Genau diese Haltung hört man beim englischen Projekt OOOD wunderbar heraus, das mit »Free Range« eins der besten PsytranceAlben des Jahres 2006 veröffentlicht hat: open-minded bis zum Abwinken, gut gelaunt und Lichtjahre entfernt vom glatt polierten Einheits-Psy. Ramsay ist seit 15 Jahren Trance-DJ, war in den frühen Neunzigern Mitbegründer der legendären DaturaPartys, und auch seine drei Kollegen sind sehr erfahren. Colin Bennun, professioneller Musiktechnologe und außerdem bei Voice Of Cod aktiv,

und Steve Callaghan, ein weiterer Datura-Mitbegründer, befassen sich schon seit den Achtzigern mit elektronischer Musik. Ryokan Potier, klassisch ausgebildeter Violinist, Trommler und DJ, ist auch schon seit 1994 dabei. Das war das Gründungsjahr von OOOD. »Free Range« ist ihr drittes Album, aber die Band fälltangesichts auch durch ihre Live-Gigs aus dem Rahmen. »You have to be open-minded with music, and the wonderful thing about Psytrance is that you can incorporate all kinds of styles and still keep people’s attention and interest«, Ramsay Melhuish says. You can hear that attitude in OOOD’s music, the four English guys have released one of the best Psytrance albums of 2006 called »Free Range«: open-minded till it hurts, fresh, funny and light-years away from the main Psy-stream. Ramsay has been DJing Trance about 15 years and was co-founder of the Datura parties in the early 90’s. His three mates are into it for ages as well. Colin Bennun, part of Voice Of Cod and a professional in music technology, and Steve Callaghan, another Datura co-founder, got in touch with electronic music way back in the 80’s. Ryokan Potier, classically-trained violinist, drummer and DJ, started playing out in 1994. »Free Range« is the third OOOD album since they started working together in 1994. OOOD means »Out Of Our Depth« and the band stands out from the crowd of today’s live acts by using a lot of instruments on stage. Each member has a different role in their live set; Ramsay does the playback element and introduces lots of different live samples, atmospheres and effects. Stevie plays guitar and analog synth. Ryo plays drums and percussion and electronic stuff as well. And Colin plays live keyboards. Their music is great for interaction and is something different for the audience to appreciate, a different side of Psytrance. »It reflects the eclectic nature of our musical taste, bearing in mind that we have been blending various musical styles over the past few years«, Ramsay explains. Rock ’n’ Roll Trance Was aus Partybekanntschaften so werden kann – zum Beispiel eins der rockigsten Live-Erlebnisse unserer Szene. Fünf Jahre ist es her, dass die beiden Belgier Tim Kaelen und Tom Moons sich beim Feiern kennen lernten, kurz darauf riefen sie ihr gemeinsames Psytrance-Projekt ins Leben, Lani. Ihre Anfangszeit mit ersten Gehversuchen als Live-Act und gemeinsamen DJSets war eine wichtige Zeit, finden Tim und Tom. Sie konnten dabei freundschaftliche Kontakte zu einigen bekannten TranceKünstlern knüpfen, die ihnen bei der Verfeinerung ihrer Fähigkeiten halfen. Die erste EP erschien 2003 auf dem kleinen belgischen Label Kairoo Records, das Debütalbum folgte 2004. Nach einer handvoll Releases auf Compilations namhafter Labels wurde das zweite Lani-Album »The Reincarnation of Jhonnoy Looloo«, released im April 2006, schon heiß erwartet. Und mit seiner energetischmystischen Klangvielfalt begeisterte das Duo Full-On-Liebhaber wie auch viele Progressive-PsyAddicts und erntete überwältigende positive Kritik. Allerspätestens jetzt war der internationale Durchbruch geschafft, es folgten Auftritte auf vielen größeren Events in ganz Europa. Die Lanis haben eine gute Beschreibung für ihren Sound: »Rock ’n’ Roll Trance«. Und das kommt nicht von ungefähr. Tim und Tom besitzen einen großen musikalischen Background, der mit der Gitarre anfing, lange bevor sie überhaupt etwas von Trance wussten. Auch wenn die beiden mittlerweile eine größere Liebe zu synthetischen Instrumenten entwickelt haben, ist eine

In Kooperation mit ihrem guten Freund Veet Sandeh erstand eine wunderschöne Chill-Out-Reise über acht Tracks. Zusätzlich ist ein Video der Künstlergruppe Lightmotiv von ihr musikalisch unterlegt worden und als Bonus auf dem Album zu finden. Lightmotiv dürften durch ihre beindruckenden Projektionen, unter anderem jedes Jahr auf dem Wonderland Festival, vielen bekannt sein. Greenspirit Festival in Thailand Silvester in Thailand, das heißt für die Psytrancewelt, am Greenspirit in Krabi gewesen zu sein. An die 3000 Fraggles kamen diesmal zum Dreitages-Festival von Stephan in Ao Nang. Die paradiesische Location nahe den weißen Stränden von Krabi wurde auch heuer wieder zum perfekten Goa-Festival mit einem beeindruckenden Line-up von Space Tribe, Azax Syndrome, Psysex, Silicon Sound, Mr. Peculiar, Scotty, Antaro und dem Schweizer Freakulizer. Auch die Ban-Tai-Clique von Sabaii Sabaii, Sanuk und Leung war dabei. Die geniale Deko stammte von Amrisha und dem Wanna Tribe.

Besonders herausragend waren diesmal auch die 3D-Pyramide von Masterdamus und die fantastischen Spacevisuals von Nico. Ohne Regen wurde heuer drei Tage lang durchgetanzt. Besondere Überraschung war das gigantische Plotter-Blanket des Deutschen Eyesurprise – eine Fotocollage aus Hunderten Gesichtern aus der internationalen Psytranceszene. Leider gab’s im Vorfeld Behördenstress, und so weiß Organizer Stephan nicht, ob er sich ein Greenspirit 2007 noch mal antun soll. Nach der Party ging’s auf den Dancefloors von Koh Phangan munter weiter – mit vielen Acts, die auch am Greenspirit vertreten waren.

The Brazil Experience Universo Paralello Die siebte Ausgabe eines der größten psychedelischen Festivals der Welt war schlicht denkwürdig. 10.000 Gäste, mehr als erwartet und mehr als je zuvor, feierten ein großartiges Line up auf drei Bühnen unter Sonne und Mond am Pratigi Beach im brasilianischen Bundesstaat Bahia. Das Festival präsentierte auch ein alternatives Kunst-Programm mit Filmen, Ausstellungen, Workshops und mehr, so dass alle aktiv werden konnten. Und auch wenn der unerwartete Ansturm ein paar Probleme machte, das Universo Paralello war gewohnt gut organisiert - psychedelischer und magischer konnte man den Jahreswechsel in Brasilien nicht verbringen. The 7th edition of one of the biggest psychedelic music and art festivals worldwide, Universo Paralello, was nothing but memorable. Pratigi beach in Bahia was the scenary again for a beautiful party, covered by a hot sun during the day and a shiny big moon at night. The most crowded edition of UP’s history, reaching an unexpected amount of around 10,000 people presented a massive line up, divided in 3 stages along the beach. Among many well known artists such as Protoculture, Rinkadink, Altöm, Cosmosis and Etnica, acts like The First Stone and Wrecked Machines

were responsible for having gathered together the biggest crowds in the dance floor, jumping like there was no tomorrow, and others like Electrypnose, Para Halu and Naked Tourist inspired a spine-shivering mindtwisting night-time mood, while renowned VJs took care of the visuals during the night. The festival also presented a whole concept of nonmusical kinds of art such as movies, exhibitions, drama, folk culture groups, circus, pedagogical activities, group dynamics, flea market and workshops, where everybody could join and participate. Individual showers and closets which were very well cleaned all the time, unfortunately couldn‘t satisfy the crowd demands, nevertheless there was a good structure for those who decided to spend again, or for the first time, the most psychedelic and magic moments that one could in Brazil during New Year‘s Eve! Igor Cavalera, der das Publikum einfach nur noch in den Wahnsinn trieb ... 10 years have passed since the first XXXperience party took place in Brazil and what better way to celebrate the anniversary, than throwing one of the biggest parties the Psytrance world has ever seen. Producing a party of this magnitude is not an easy task, unless you have a long history in the scene and a good reputation for great events. This doesn‘t happen from one day to another, it was actually more than 10 years of hard work. The dance floor was almost full when the party was getting started. Psynema were playing a great DJ set combined with very psychedelic projections. This was a great way to have people start their journey on this special occasion. Wizzy Noise from Greece followed and presented their particular style of Full on Trance. Close to sunrise, Skazi presented a show unlike no other. 10 people joined him on stage, including Igor Cavalera from Sepultura on the drums that drove the crowd into complete madness. Another great show that was anticipated by the crowd was 1200 mics who played after DJ Rica vs. Feio. »Vuuv 2007« - without Antaro Antaro zieht sich aus der Voov Experience zurück, die nun federführend von seinem langjährigen Partner Scotty organisiert wird natürlich mit Hilfe aller anderen festen Größen im eingespielten Team. Um diesen Bruch mit einer 15-jährigen Tradition zu dokumentieren, heißt das älteste deutsche Psytrance-Festival künftig »Vuuv«, dieses Jahr mit dem Untertitel: »The Transformation«. Gefeiert wird weiter bei Putlitz, wo man die bunten Gäste aus aller Welt ja bekanntermaßen sehr schätzt. Das Festivalkonzept soll ein wenig verändert werden - »zurück zu den Wurzeln und einen Schritt nach vorne«. Konkrete Pläne werden noch nicht preisgegeben. Antaro gilt wegen seiner Pionierarbeit als Vater- und Gründerfigur besonders der deutschen, aber auch der internationalen Psytrance-Szene. Nicht zuletzt wegen seines Labels Spirit Zone, das zwischen August 1994 und Juni 2005 rund 150 Releases auf den Markt brachte, viele davon wegweisend. Mistress of Evil Label Night 16 February / Biel (Switzerland) Further Dimensions geht in die zweite Runde - und die USP-Crew setzt alles in Gang, um der Schweizer DarkPsy-Fangemeinde eine weitere teuflisch gute Party zu präsentieren. Eigens dafür wird Amanda, die Mistress of Evil höchstpersönlich, aus San Francisco eingeflogen und ein packendes DJ-Set zum Besten geben. Mit im Gepäck hat sie Mubali, der seine dunkle Karriere auf ihrem Label startete und ausbaute. Sein Debüt-Album folgte letztes Jahr auf Trishula. Den zweiten Live-Act der Party wird der Walliser Electrohypnose geben, DJ-technisch schickt USP die eigenen Künstler Milosz, Hidden Skills und Zenkatsu ins Rennen. Die Diskussion über die Kommerzialisierung der Szene hat im Prinzip begonnen, als für die erste Party Eintritt verlangt wurde - statt wie vorher nur den Hut hinzustellen. So hab ich es mir von den Älteren überliefern lassen, es muss - für Deutschland - schon etwa 1991/92 auf einer Waldheim-Party passiert sein. Sprich: eine Debatte über Kommerz und die falschen Nasen auf Partys gehört dazu, das ist Goa. Eure Antworten in unserer Umfrage zeigen, dass diese Diskussion so hitzig wie eh und je geführt wird. Demnach ist wohl alles gut und normal in Psy-Land!? Nein, es gibt ein echtes Unbehagen, das sich zurzeit auch im Goabase-Forum Luft macht. Wo soll das alles hinführen? Kleinere Partys? Gesichtskontrollen zusätzlich zu denen der Polizei? Wer ist schuld? Fängt das Problem nicht in dem Moment an, in dem man »Szene« sagt, denkt, fühlt? Fest steht jedenfalls, dass unsere Leser den Eindruck haben, die Psytrance-Szene werde immer größer, kommerzieller, oberflächlicher, sei aber (oder deswegen?) auch immer lokaler ausgerichtet. Gleichzeitig steht dagegen aber auch fest, dass in so einer Abstimmung trotzdem immer fette und internationale Festivals vorne landen. Und selbst bei vielen kritischen Stimmen schwingt mit: Es ist immer noch und immer wieder sehr, sehr schön, auf den Festivals zu sein (oder auch: auf bestimmten). Auffällig ist in diesem Bereich der Umfrage, wie viele Leute sich gegen Drogen aussprechen, zum

Teil eingeschränkt auf bestimmte Substanzen wie Kokain oder Speed, weil es für sie auf Partys um ganz andere Dinge geht. Vielleicht sollte man das mal ausdrucken und bei nächster Gelegenheit dem PolizeiEinsatzleiter vor dem Festivaltor in die Hand drücken ... Aber wer hat da überhaupt abgestimmt? 527 Leute, das ist übrigens mushroom-Rekord. Sie kommen aus 41 Ländern, aber zumeist aus (Nord-)Deutschland. Österreich (14 Teilnehmer) sowie Belgien, Bosnien-Herzegowina und die Schweiz (je 12) folgen auf den Plätzen. Älter als 28, liest der Durchschnitts-Umfrageteilnehmer als Deutscher seit 6,35 Jahren den mushroom, als Nicht-Deutscher seit 3,25 Jahren. Seit mehr als sieben Jahren geht er feiern, und er ist zu rund einem Viertel eine Frau. Knapp sechs Prozent können gar nicht lesen, und 21 Teilnehmer

Although the Psytrance tableau has changed, our reader survey shows that ultimately, it is still beautiful. You shared your thoughts about what it is that still appeals to you and what it is that troubles you and after crunching the data we collected, we‘ve managed to get to the core of the matter. The names of around 200 winners will be published on www.mushroom-online.com from the middle of February

Discussions about the commercialisation of the scene began when the first organiser charged an entrance fee for a party, rather than relying on magical hat donations - that‘s what I‘ve heard from the elders. In the case of Germany, this must have been about 1991/92 at a Waldheim party. Conclusion: a debate about commerciality and the wrong people at parties is a part of it all, that‘s Goa! Your answers to our questionnaire show us that this topic is just as important as before. Thus, all is well and as usual in Psy-land!? Joking aside, there‘s a real feeling of discontentment, something that as well is clear from recent comments on the Goabase forum. Where‘s it all heading? Smaller parties? Face checks as well as police checks? Who‘s to blame? Doesn‘t the problem begin as soon as one says, thinks, feels »scene«?

It‘s certainly clear that our readers have the impression that the Psytrance scene is continually getting bigger, more commercial, more superficial, although (or maybe therefore?) focused more locally than before. Though it is still as clear that huge international festivals always win the vote in surveys like this. And even amongst the many criticisms, it‘s still always very nice to be at the (or also: at certain) festivals. The survey also highlighted how many people are opposed to drugs, sometimes limited to specific substances like cocaine and speed, because parties are about very different things for them. Maybe we should print it all off and give it to the police officer-in-charge at the next festival entrance ... Although who‘s opinion is it anyway? 527 people, that‘s the mushroom record by the way. They come from 41 countries, although mostly from (Northern) Germany. Austria (14 participants), Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Switzerland (12 each) are the runners up. Aged over 28, the average participant has been reading mushroom for 6,35 years when German, non-Germans for 3,25 years. Einige Fragen bleiben offen, weil das Ergebnis nicht aussagekräftig ist. Als Newcomer ist zum Beispiel Liquid Soul mit gerade mal zehn Stimmen der Spitzenreiter, bei CDs ist das Ergebnis sogar noch zersplitterter. Ich finde das sehr sympathisch. Und irgendwie oldschool. Für uns im mushroom Team ist die Umfrage vor allem Balsam gewesen, viel Lob und »Weiter so!«, aber

auch viel konstruktive Kritik und viel Verständnis für uns als Magazin aus der alten Zeit, das eben auch in der neuen Zeit überleben will, was nicht immer leicht ist. managed to get some very interesting answers from you, even if somewhat indirectly at times. For example, you don‘t seem to follow any Psytrance heroes - at least not all the same ones. To even attempt to answer the question regarding artist of the year, we combined the answers for DJ and live act, especially as some only-live acts were listed under DJ. The artist of the year therefore had 1054 votes, the final figures for which you can see in the box »The Vote«. And the winner is: ... nobody! Several questions remain open, as the replies were not conclusive. Liquid Soul was the frontrunner in the Newcomer category with only 10 votes and with CDs it was even more varied. I found this very simpatico. And somehow oldschool.

For us in the mushroom team, the survey was a soothing balm with a lot of praise and »Keep it up« as well as a lot of constructive criticism and understanding for a magazine from the old days, that still wants to live on in the current day and age, something that‘s not always easy. It even increases the value of the statements about our work that we have so many answers by faithful readers with years of mushroom experience :‘) The individual mushroom sections were rated from good to very good and best of all was the cover with 4,9 (out of 6) - we‘re working on improving our ratings for next year. »Railways« (Vision Quest) CD Das zweite Album von Yinon Oved aus Israel, Full On, der Gott sei Dank nicht mit »voll drauf« übersetzt werden muss. Saubere, straighte Bässe, darüber weite, verträumte Flächen. »Voran!« ist die Devise, der Bass kickt wie die Eisenbahnräder auf den Schienen, die (musikalische) Landschaft zieht temporeich vorbei, man ist hin- und hergerissen, ob man verweilen oder weiter im Takt der Räder tanzen möchte. The second album by Yinon Oved from Israel has arrived. Full-on, which luckily doesn’t have to be interpreted as »completely blasted«. Clean straight basses, layered with wide dreamy pads. The bass kicks like thundering train wheels on iron tracks, the (musical) landscape moves along at a fast pace, and one finds oneself split between lingering a while longer or continuing to dance to the tempo of the pounding engine. »Railways« has a more trancey character than its predecessor, however Popstream hasn’t let anything spoil his sense of humour. »Singularity« (Compact) CD Das vierte Album von Cosmic Tone macht mir deutlich mehr Spaß als erwartet. Hatte ich bei den bisherigen Releases immer ein klein wenig das Gefühl, mir zehnmal den gleichen Track anzuhören, so macht »Singularity« wieder deutlich Boden gut. Fetter melodic Happy Trance zum Mitpfeifen. Fröhliche, sonnige Melodien und 16telBässe reißen sicher jeden Kopfnicker von seinem Barhocker und zwingen ihn auf den Floor. Auch Roei Nissan und Noga Sudai kommen nicht an der PopWelle vorbei, die durch den Psytrance schwappt, und liefern mit Aquatica eine Full-on-Gesangsnummer ab, die Ihresgleichen sucht. Mir hat es ein Lächeln ins Gesicht gezaubert und die Schritte beschwingt. Einiges ist Standard-Floorfüller-Zeug, aber es gibt auch Perlen wie »I lost my brain in Tokyo«. Having appeared on various labels under different names over the years, Samy Guediche‘s Psy story maybe somewhat hard to trace, but when you consider he‘s worked with names like Skazi, Space Tribe, Absolum, Mekkanikka and Sirius Issness, all but the most Full-on-phobics should listen up. Originally due out last year on Planet B.E.N., »Discodelic«, Samy‘s third album, has now been released on his own recently launched label, Nutek, and it certainly put a smile on my face and a spring in my step. Admittedly some of the tracks are fairly standard floor-filler material, but amongst them are a couple of gems including »I lost my brain in Tokyo« with its recurring 5 note sample providing a wonderful, cheeky little addition to the songs driving basses and kicking drums. Künstler wie Silent Horror oder Whicked Hayo wissen durch, für ihre Verhältnisse, sparsame Beiträge zu bestechen und bilden inmitten von A.P.E. oder Trold eine sehr anständige Achterbahnfahrt ohne wirklich auszubrechen. Fast schon Standard scheint es zu sein, dass Gappeq die Reise eröffnet, und wie immer präsentiert der Tscheche einen außergewöhnlichen Track. P_Mac from Austria calls in with his twelfth release and underlines his sensibility for high grade underground Psy. The line up on this compilation could give the impression that this is a wild and unrestrained mix up of overload, however nothing could be further from the truth. Absolutely great! The line-up already made me flick my tongue. A top secret tip, Gappeq from Czech Republic opens this very fat disk. There is something for everyone, Zolod who moved beyond this dimension is present as Terminator remixed GMS, Insane Behaviour reworks the hit »As well as you dance« by Naked Tourist, and Furious from Russia leaves his own mark on the Ocelot track »Xcilog frog grog«. Need I say more? At times my overall impression was that this is a melodic but not Pop oriented compilation. Tamlin provides a Northern European feel with the playful acid trip of this CD. Natürlich mit satten 16tel-Bässen unterlegt, jeder Menge Voices gewürzt, teilweise gebreakten Kicks und superfett produziert. »Engine On« gefällt mir aus genau diesem Grund am besten, es hat einen leichten Elektro-Touch und erinnert an frühe Sub6-Tracks. Trotz allem sind ein paar der Nummern wegen der vielen Tempo- und Rhythmuswechsel schwer tanzbar. Loud are Kobi Toledano and Eitan Reiter and with this CD they present their debut on the new label Drive from Israel. Experimental Fullon would be a fitting label for their music, as at first impression they seem to use a lot of disbanded sounds. However once one opens up to the music, a lot of clever refinements can be discovered. Of course, this album is based on driving 16th basses, spiced with lots of vocals, partially breaky kicks, and with super fat production throughout. For this reason »Engine On« is my personal favourite, it has a light Electro touch, and reminds me of early Sub6 tracks. Im Irgendwo zwischen Psy-Pop und Electro-Metal gibt es ein spannendes Album aus schönen Intros und bissigen Grooves, das jedoch wie viele freestylige Underground-Produktionen zwar auf der elektronischen Seite fett gemacht ist, aber bei den Vocals leider schwächelt. Nicht jeder kann singen. Trotzdem löblich, hörenswert und geeignet, den Horizont zu erweitern. This is an in house project by Mushy Records, a very interesting and somewhat more open-minded label from Israel. In no mans land between PsyPop and Electro-Metal lies an exciting album made of beautiful intros and cutting grooves. However like many freestyle underground productions the electronic side is well made, but unfortunately there are weaknes-

Teilweise ist es aber etwas zu viel des Guten, sprich es wird immer wieder mal viel zu cheesy, auch fehlt etwas an Volumen oder auch mal ein etwas dickerer Bass. Ab der Mitte wird es zunehmend twisted, nachttauglich und etwas psyknarzig. After releases on various compilations, amongst others Hadshot, now an album appears by Mr. Morlack. It is recommended to insert the CD, sit down, relax, then gently turn up the volume and listen to it all from beginning to end. Pleasant Old-school focused Psychedelic Trance, ranging from varied to trippy, with stress free guitar riffs and brimming with ideas and humorous moments. However it gets too much at times, in other words from time to time it’s simply too cheesy, and also the tracks are lacking in volume, or another time perhaps a slightly fatter bass. Hier vereint er amtlich bekannte Trockenrocker aus der Schweiz, aus Hamburg und Schweden mit Yuli und Ace zu einem schubigem Opus aus obercoolem, manchmal fast zu deepem Progressive Trance. So »different« ist das für unsereinen also nicht, für traditionelle israelische Hörgewohnheiten aber natürlich ein Quantensprung. Die österreichische Hängematte kommt auch im dritten Teil wie immer äußerst smooth, wunderschön und nicht zu psychedelisch daher. Schönheit am Stück ist das Programm, das Acan und Ovnimoon hier sehr gelungen umgesetzt haben. Herausragend: das schöne Intro von Blue Lunar Monkeys »Free Flowing« und der Track »Melt« von unserem neuen mushroom-Mitarbeiter Prahlad, ein Meisterstück aus Sampling, Instrumentierung, atmosphärischer Dichte und Lebendigkeit. Smooth und groovig, mit Melodie, Harmonie und feinsten Klangteppichen schaffen die Tracks einen eigenen Space, der scheinbar jenseits dieser Welt liegt. Wer eine vielfältige, MultigeschmackChill-Compi sucht, ist mit dieser Doppel-CD gut beraten. Number seven from the house of Chillcode also proves to be a special release. I thought it would be difficult to improve upon their releases so far, but this CD showed me it can be done. Smooth and grooving, with melody, harmony and finest sound scapes, the tracks create a unique space that seems to be beyond this world. Außerdem berichteten wir über das damals sehr aktive Zeitlos Deko Team, das sich später mit dem Bau der Fusion-Rakete noch sein eigenes Denkmal setzen sollte.

We‘ve set the time machine to minus 10 years and in this small new monthly feature we will be looking at what was happening in our scene at the time. 10 Years ago Es gibt das mushroom magazine ja schon seit Ende Mai 1994 im monatlichen Rhythmus. Im Februar 1996 erschien die erste Ausgabe, die umfangreich über Psytrance berichtete. Wir haben die Zeitmaschine mal auf minus zehn Jahre programmiert und wollen nun monatlich in dieser kleinen, neuen Rubrik in die Vergangenheit schauen. Wir befinden uns deshalb nun im Februar 1997. Der mushroom kam damals noch aus dem beschaulichen Soltau (zwischen Hamburg und Hannover), war ein auf Norddeutschland spezialisiertes Magazin und berichtete sowohl über die Technoals auch über die Psytranceszene. Aufmacher waren Storys über die Techno/Trance-Grenzgänger Mijk van Dijk (Titelbild) und Roland BPM, der im damals wiederauferstandenen Waldheim Club im Hamburger Powerhaus als Resident auflegte.
