WELCOME TO IDDIS THE

CANNING

AN INDUSTRIAL TOWN

IDDIS is a museum attraction in Stavanger Old Town, containing both the Norwegian Printing and Canning Museums.

The two museums share a common industrial history because it was precisely the need for colourful labels (iddis) and packaging for a growing canning industry that laid the foundation for a strong printing industry in Stavanger. Here, you can experience exciting and informative exhibitions, purchase unique gifts at the museum shop, and enjoy delicious food and beverages in the museum café – IDDIS Café & Brasserie. IDDIS was designed by the architects Eder Bieser Arkitekter and was awarded Stavanger Municipality’s vernacular architecture prize in 2023.

OCCUPATIONS AND WORKING LIFE

The Norwegian Canning Museum is housed in a former canning factory in Stavanger Old Town. Here you can see how traditional Norwegian canned sardines and fish balls were produced. Get an insight into working conditions inside the factory. How much did a threader or a smoker earn? How long was the working day in 1916?

IDDIS CAFÉ & BRASSERIE

In the museum café, you can enjoy a delicious meal, coffee or other beverages in historic surroundings with modern amenities. We offer you food with a local touch – sardines au gratin and the best sandwich in town.
