Consists of a two-wheel under-carriage with ell ipt ical spr ings , a Furley stretcher, and an awning cover so arranged on a jointed frame that it can be rolled up, or a fold ing hood and apron (size as shown) . The under-carriage has a cranked axle which enables the bearers when carrying the stretcher for loading and unloading to pass between the wheels . When travelling, the legs of the under-carriage (see Fig. I) are raised, forming the handles by which it is propelled . Should it be necessary to pass over very rough ground or an obstacle such as a road kerb, the litter and pat ient can be easily lifted by the two bearers
The H Rea-Edwards ".
The under-carriage is fitted with either 28-in. bicycle wheels and It- in extra strong pneumatic or I-in solid india-rubber tyres, or with light but strong wooden wheels, with sol id india-rubber tyres. The height of the wheels permits of a loaded stretcher being lifted over them . Ball-bearings are fitted to the cycle wheels, A push bar, capable of being raised or lowered, is used at the head end. When raised as a handle it may be locked in one of two positions , and when lowered it is locked in a vertical position. When loaded, the patient is balanced over the axle, ensuring comfort in transport, ease in propulsion. and rapidity in manipulation
The " St. John".
The under-carriage presents some entirely new features, and is constructed to take either a Furley ", Clemetson ", or regulation Army Stretcher When loaded. the pat ient is balanced over the axle .
Portability . - The leg or wpport at each end, when raised , goes beneath the frame, and the wheels, which are interchangeable, can be easily and quickly removed The under-carriage may thus be taken into three p ieces , which can be passed through any ordinary doorway, and stored in a room or other convenient place This does away with the necessity for providing the special storage accommodation required for other patterns. The parts can be put together by a single person in two or three minutes . 42

STRETCHERS.
The" Furley " Stretchers are very strong, and light; fold closely, are thoroughly efficient, and reliable in all respects. The co Telescopichandled" pattern is more particularly designed for Invalid Transport purposes , and working in confined spaces, such as mines or the holds of ships; the Ordinary" pattern for general and St John Ambulance Brigade use They can be used with either the" Ashford ", " Rea-Edwards ", or" St. John" Litter under-carriage. Should it be necessary to reduce the width of a loaded stretcher in order, for example, to carry it into a railway carriage, this can be done, either when it is resting on the ground or supported by the bearers, without trouble or the slightest jar to the patient by pressing in the jointed bar (traverse bar) at each end.
Board of Trade Regulations for Mines advise that for damp places, Stretchers, etc., should be made with Rotproof Canvas
These can be supplied at a small extra cost
" Cadet" Pattern.
In construction this follows the lines of the" Ord inary" pattern" Furley " Stretcher, but strong stirrup irons are fitted in place of the four short legs. Although light, it is sufficiently strong for transport pu rposes.

" Clemetson" Pattern.
On th is stretcher the patient can be moved as desired, from the recumbent to the sitting position . There is no comp!jcated mechanism to get out of order, and the adjustment depends simply on the balance of the patient's body . The stretcher will fit either the" Ashford ", "Rea-Edwards ", or " St John" Litter under -ca rriage
Special Appliances.
For use in Ships' Holds, Mines, Gasholders, Sewers, etc., by means of which injured persons, insensible or otherwise, can be lifted in the upright position
and passed through small hatches , manholes, sewer ventilators, narrow shafts, etc.
The co Lowmoor Jacket".
(For use with the co Furley Stretchers .)
(A) The "Suspension Frame ", an iron attachment consisting of three bars, i.e. the top bar, centre bar, and lower bar, the latter is adjustable by means of two wing nuts.
(B) The " Jacket ", an irregular shaped piece of canvas which for purposes of description is divided into the" top piece" or oblong portion, and the "end piece" or triangular portion. The top piece is fitted on the outs ide at the back with two broad webbing straps-the" Suspension Straps" (B I), and in front on one side with three leather points and on the other with three buckles, by means of which the Jacket is secured. At the top of the latter are tWO buckles , which take the upper pair of leather points on the Suspension Straps. The end piece is fitted on the outside with two buckles which take the pa ir of leather points on the ends of the Suspension Straps.
(C) A long broad webbing sling-the" Supporting Sling "-with buckle and point at each end.
(D) Two broad webbing straps-the" Body Straps ".
How to use the" Lowmoor Jacket ".
I Open the stretcher with which the Lowmoor Jacket is to be used and see that the traverse bars are securely locked by pulling each towards its respective end of the stretcher as far as it will go.
2 Take the Suspension Frame (A) and after unscrewing the wing-nuts as much as possible, pass it over the handles of the stretcher-the handles go between the centre nad lower bars (the former being on top and the latter beneath them)-until it is close up to and touching the canvas. Secure it by screwing up the wing-nuts tightly Be sure it is firmly fixed to the stretcher by testing, as it carries the whole weight of the patient 's body. In using a telescopic-handled stretcher, pull out the handles at the head end if space permits, otherwise for about 6 inches only, before fitting the Suspension Frame.
3. Spread out the Jacket (B) on the stretcher , taking care that the straps which are on the outside are next the bed of the stretcher and that the upper part of the" top p iece " of t he Jac ket is where the pat ient s arm-pits will be when he is placed lIpon the stretcher This will be about 18 inches from the Suspension Frame

Lowmoor Jacket."
Pass the ends of the two Suspension Straps (B I) between the canvas and the under side of the centre bar of the Suspension Frame and see they lie flat.
Place the patient on the open Jacket.
Bring the ends of the" top piece" over the chest and secure them.
Bring the Suspens ion Straps over the top bar of the Suspension Frame, pull them as taut as possible and secure them by the upper pair of leather points on the under side of the Straps to the buckles on the upper edge of the" top piece" of the Jacket in front . The upper edge of the jacket must be well IIp in the patient's arm-pits .
Bring the" end piece" of the Jacket between the patient's thighs, pull It well up into the fork and secure it by the buckles thereon to the two leather points at the ends of the Suspension Straps.
must be taken that the Jacket is well adjusted to the body and that the Suspension Straps are sufficiently taut, otherwise when the stretcher Is placed in an upright position, the patient's body may slip slightly towards the foot of the stretcher. This should always be avoided as it is likely, if the patient Is conscious, to give rise to a feeling of insecurity.
4 . If the lower limbs are uninjured and the patient is consciousBuckle the two ends of the Suppo rting Sling (C) to the upper bar of the Suspension Frame by the two leather points and buckles, one end being placed on the outer side of each Suspension Strap.
Place the loop formed under both feet adjusting the length by means of the sliding grip. The length of the sling should be such that when the stretcher Is placed in the upright position the patient will practically be standing in the sling This will relieve the strain on the Suspension Straps and add to the patient's comfort If one lower limb is injured the Supporting Sling should pass beneath the foot of the uninjured limb only.
If unconscious or both lower limbs are injured, the Supporting Sling should not be attached to the Suspension Frame, but passed over the patient's knees and beneath the stretcher two or three times, as the length will permit, to keep the lower limbs steady.
5 . Pass the Body Straps (0) over the body and legs and beneath the stretcher as shown, to keep the arms and legs steady.

Box No. I is of specially strong construction, being made entirely of metal with a drop front which, secured by a chain, supplied with the box, can be used as a dressing table. It is fitted with a handle for carrying and attachments by means of which it can be hung upon a wall. Box No.2 is also made of metal, but of lighter construction, the exterior fittings and enamelling are similar to Box No. I. The interior is white enamelled, and is fitted with strong board boxes covered red cloth , instead of metal compartments.
