Roger Salmon couldn t stay away from St. John Ambulance! Originally Roger joined in 1958 and volunteered until 1972 when he decided to take a break due to family and work commitments Having kept up his FirstAid qualification , Roger decided in 2004 to join again but this time as a Neighbourhood First Responder In fact Roger used his extensive business management experience to help form a new unit. He explains " J joined a group who were seeking to form Epping & Loughton NFR Unit 3 years ago as I wanted to get more involved in helping the local community and it 's great for me as, being on call from home , I'm able to study as well. On average we take about 2 calls a week but it can become quite hectic at times , on one particular day we took 5 calls so it was all hands on deck." Roger continues "As a unit we meet up once a fortnight to practice our ski ll s, learn new topics and also to share our First Aid experiences , which is very beneficial. We've had some really interesti ng trainers and our unit has even been out with other SJA members providing cover at an air show this year Neighbourhood First Responding is a great wa y to volunteer ; I'd recommend it to anyone! "
Roger 's service during his two spells with SJA has been recognised , he wa s awarded the Service Medal of St. John in not ju st one but two ceremonies during 2006 one in the Epping Forest District Council Chamber and the other at county HQ.

Wearing a uniform gives members a recognisable identity and promotes public trust and confldence. The SJA uniform aims to meet the demands of current clinical practice by being:
• Effective
• Smart and safe
• Practical and protective SJA members have a responsibility to ensure infection control standards are maintained.
INFECTION CONTROL ISSUES :
I. Freshly laundered clothi ng must be worn for each duty.
2. For duties where contamination with potentially infectious bodily fluids (such as blood, vomit, urine , faeces, sputum) is a possibility the uniform must be capable of being washed at a temperature above 65° centigrade.
3. Uniform that has been heavily contaminated should be disposed of (as clinical waste) and replaced. Members should have access to spare clothing in the event of this occurring on duty.
4. Sociall y soi led or minimally contaminated uniform should be:
• Washed separate from other items, in a washing machine at 65-710 centigrade.
• Washed in laundry detergent in the quantities advised by the manufacturer (the type of detergent, for example 'biological' is not important).
• Dried quickly or tumble dried, and ironed.
• Hand washing clothing items is ineffective and not acceptable.
5. Uniform should be stored in a plastic bag, to prevent contamination with dust or other pollutants
6. Hands must be washed after handling contaminated clothing.

To be worn for Investitures, church parades, formal ceremonial duties, events etc. Where members do not have a jacket the NATO t ght knit sweater may be worn (No.2 Dress).
Medals may be worn with this form of dress if ordered.
To be worn whe n on nursing duties in medical establishments. This mode may also be authorised for outdoor warm weather wear or for indoor duties.
To be authorised by the officer res po nsible for organising the duty as app ropriate for the duty and the individua role.
A high standard of smartness must be maintained wi th this dress. Belt may be worn under sweater according to personal choice.
Note: These photographs illustrate only some of the combinations of uniform, see the table opposite for full detailed options.
What to wear and when
There are 9 orders of dress authorised for wear. They relate to the varied activities of St. John Ambulance. With an increasing need for St. John Ambulance to be involved in a much wider range of caring, the precise form of uniform is often difficult to prescribe. As a result, St. John Ambulance authorises the wearing of other forms of dress to provide identification in special circumstances. For example, Badge r Leaders conducting Badger activities and members who undertake social care duties wearing a sweatshirt or polo shirt, combat trousers or fieece. Generally, Unit members should wear approved clothing suitable for their particular roles. All members should wear similar uniform when on duty together unless their specific role necessitates otherwise. Officers responsible for each duty should carefully conSider the possible risks and operational needs, the members' preferences and any county policy when ordering what should be worn.
Wearing your uniform
You may wear only those badges authorised in Dress Regulations and they must be correctly positioned - see page 38. All badges are of a cloth design for safety. Only sew-on medal ribbons should be worn with operational dress. It s usually appropriate for headwear to be removed and the senior officer present will issue instructions appropriately.

What to wear and when
There are 9 orders of dress authorised for wear: They relate to the varied activities of 5t. John Ambulance. With an increasing need for 5t. John Ambulance to be involved in a much wider range of caring, the precise form of uniform is often difficult to prescribe.
As a result, St. John Ambulance authorises the wearing of other forms of dress to provide identification in special circumstances. For example, Badger Leaders conducting Badger activities and members who undertake social care duties wearing a sweatshirt or polo shirt, combat trousers or fleece.
Generally. Unit members should wear approved clothing suitable for their particular roles. All members should wear uniform when on duty together unless their specific role necessitates otherwise. Officers responsible for each duty should carefully consider the possible risks and operational needs, the members' preferences and any county policy when ordenng what should be worn.
