Amendments to Dress Regulations (Nursing) (B.O. 1368).
Para. 1 of the Circular to these Orders gives details of amendments to Dress Regulations (Nursing) in respect of;-
(a) National Hospital Service Reserve:
Revised regulations on N.H.S.R. Auxiliaries uniform and position of wearing training badges.
(b) Headdress:
Authorization of a black felt tricorne hat to be worn by Officers, N.C.O.s, Members, and Presidents or Vice-Presidents.
(c) Uniform Length:
Authorization for alteration in lengths of greatcoat, skirt, Officer's lightweight black dress, Nursing Dress, Duty overall and apron.
(AMBULANCE, NURSING, AMBULANCE CADET, NURSING CADET JULY, 1964-JULY, 1966.)
Dress Regulations (Nursing) (B.O. 1262).
Area Staff Officers (N) Grade IV to VI will wear the black and white hat ribbon and cockade as described on page 18 (a) without tuft instead of the grey and white one as hitherto. This will be incorporated in Dress Regulations when next revised.
(Amendment to B.O. 1262) Dress Regulations (Nursing) (B.O. 1277).
District/County Staff Officers (N) Grade IV-VI, as well as Area Staff Officers (N) Grade IV-VI, will wear the black and white hat ribbon and cockade as described on page 18 (a) without tuft instead of the grey and white one as hitherto. This will be incorporated in Dress Regulations when next revised.
Dress Regulations Ambulance (Revised, 1962) (B.O. 1282).
N.C.O.s and Ambulance Members. Jacket (page 30).
Amend tailoring details to read as follows :-
Black cloth of approved pattern. Single breasted, step coliar, side vent, back with centre seam. Belt hooks. Shoulder straps 21-" wide at base and 11" wide at level of button, fixed with Brigade button No.2. Two patch breast pockets with 1i" box pleat in centre, with flap 2,r' deep fixed with Brigade button No.2. Two lower side pockets, inset, with 2,r' deep flap fixed with Brigade button No.2. Plain cuffs and stitched through 1t" on unlined garment. Front fastened four Brigade buttons No.1, the top button level with top of patch pocket. Stitching t" on back seam of sleeves, revers front, flaps, pockets, straps, and centre back seam.
Nursing and Nursing Cadet Dress Regulations (Revised, 1962) (B.O. 1283).
Nursing Dress. It has been noticed that many dresses are being worn with the back pleat opening free from the waist-line. Divisions are reminded that the pleat seam stitching should continue to lower hip level, which holds the inverted pleat in position and results in a neater fit.
County Emblem (B.O. 1290).
Approval has been given for the members of the Brigade in Durham to wear " St. Cuthbert's Cross" on Brigade uniform as laid down for certain Districts and Counties in Dress Regulations- Ambulance page 23, and Nursing pages 28 and 29.

MEMORANDUM
These Dress Regulations, which have been revised, are to be strictly observed throughout the Brigade. No deviation from the sealed patterns of uniform, clothing, equipment, and badges is allowed.
Units requiring uniform and equipment are urged to support the Stores Department of the Order of St. John, St. John's Gate, Clerkenwell, London, E.C.1, who supply best quality at competitive prices. By buying from the Stores Department, Members will ensure uniformity of dress, so essential throughout the Brigade.
Badges of the Order of St. John, including those worn on Brigade Uniform, are protected under The Chartered Associations (Venerable Order of St. John of Jerusalem) Protection Order, 1927, and the badges to which this Protection Order applies are badges made of any material whatsoever, bearing or consisting of, the device of a white eight-pointed cross embellished on the four principal angles alternatively with a lion passant guardant and a unicorn passant, whether or not the device is surrounded or accompanied by concentric circles or other decoration or by lettering.

1. Uniform must be worn smartly and correctly. Mixed dress, partly uniform and partly plain clothes must not be worn except in emergency. Jewellery must not be worn.
2. Head-dress
(a) The hat will be worn with jacket and skirt on all occasions. It will be worn by personnel in nursing dress out of doors except when othenvise ordered. It may also be worn with the nursing dress for certain indoor duties as ordered. The beret or peaked cap may be worn at other times, e.g. travelling to and from an indoor duty, Divisional meetings, C.D. exercises, and on certain outdoor duties when sanctioned by the Commissioner (e.g. point-to-point races). (See also uniform for special purposes, page 10.)
(b) The indoor cap is normally worn with the nursing dress for indoor duties. (For method of wearing, see pages 20-21.)
When two or more nursing personnel are on any form of duty together, they will all wear the same type of head-dress.
3. The shirt (men's type) is white with self collar or detachable semi-stiff collar.
4. The tie is plain black, tied in a sailor knot and fastened with Badge 19. (See page 30.)
5. Gloves are plain white with 3-line stitching on back. Grey or black gloves may be worn for travelling.
6. Shoes are black leather laced or plain, the heels not to exceed 2 inches in height, the heel base being not less than 1 inch. Plastic or rubber heels will be worn for hospital work. In inclement weather black overshoes may be worn.
7. Stockings are plain black.
8. The greatcoat and waterproof when worn will he buttoned up: if carried, they will be buttoned up and carried over the left forearm with the buttons to the front.
9. Badges must be correctly placed on uniform as described and illustrated on pages 22-30.
10. First Aid Pack.-On all occasions in uniform Officers and Members will carry a pack containing: one triangular bandage, one 2-inch roller bandage,
3 sterile dressings, adhesive dressings and safety pins. If additional First Aid equipment is required it will be carried in a case or black regulation haversack.
11. Handbags must be black. A regulation shoulder-handbag with adjustable sling strap is obtainable from Stores Department. Handbags must not be carried on any ceremonial occasion.
12. If Hot Weather Order is authorised and the jacket is discarded, a plain black waist belt will be worn, and shirt sleeves will be rolled up flat 2 inches above the elbow. The lightweight black dress authorised for Brigade H.Q., District/ County, Area, Staff Officers Grade III and above, may be worn for general purposes and inspection of public duty first aid posts; but it is not permitted for parades, reviews, inspections or on any occasion when decorations are worn, with the exception of evening functions when it may be worn with miniature medals.
NOTE: In exceptionally hot weather, if Hot Weather Order has not been authorised, Officers and Members may travel to public duties in the dress and apron without the greatcoat, but the greatcoat should be carried. Those undertaking hospital or nursing aid, etc., duties, should travel in the dress without apron, or if the apron is worn a second clean apron must be taken for the nursing duty.
13. Jacket and Skirt
All Women Surgeons wear Public Duty Order as for Officers (see page 4) for all Brigade functions. District/County and Area Surgeons may wear the lightweight black dress on suitable occasions (see 12 above).
Corps/ Divisional Nursing Officers may wear Church Parade Order as on page 5 for inspections, if not in possession of indoor uniform.
Corps Superintendents and Corps Staff Officers if visiting first aid posts, etc., wear Church Parade Order without medals.
14. Indoor dress. The regulation uniform is as laid down on pages 37-38. Old style uniform may continue to be worn until replacement is required; the new type bib apron may be worn with the old dress and buttons No. 14 will be attached to the top of the dress breast pockets for securing the bib.
The white starched belt and cuffs and the old type narrow stiff collar will continue to be worn with the old style dress.
Medallion holders will wear the medallion in bronze, suspended from the regulation brooch, at the dress neck fastening on all occasions. It must be well polished.
The white duty overall: In exceptional circumstances if approved by a senior officer this may be worn with indoor cap, black stockings and shoes, as the alternative to the dress and apron for Brigade duties other than outdoor public duties. It must not be worn for inspections or other formal occasions. Officers will wear appropriate detachable shoulder-straps with the overall.
15. The collar is white, trubenized or interlined semi-stiff. The white collar must conceal the collar of the dress.
16. The Officer's belt is black, fastened by regulation chromed metal buckle at centre front.
The Member's belt is grey. The mitre fastening must be in line with the left edge of the apron bib.
17. The apron bib is secured to the buttons of the dress breast pockets; it must fit neatly and conceal the pockets. The back edges of the apron should meet at the waist, the waistband buttons being adjusted as necessary. The bottom edge of the apron must be 1 inch shorter than the dress.
18. Frillies must be worn over the roll-up of the sleeves on nursing duty.
19. The corridor cape must not be worn when travelling to and from any duty.
UNIFORM FOR SPECIAL PURPOSES
Air Attendant Duty
Jacket and skirt uniform with beret, greatcoat, and white duty overall, if necessary. (For badges see page 26.)
Nursing Duty Order may be worn as an alternative to jacket and skirt. Camps
St. John personnel attending St. John camps must wear correct uniform when travelling to and from camp, and on any full parade when at camp. The Officer on duty in the camp must wear correct Public Duty Order. Brigade personnel attending camps of other organisations, may on suitable occasions wear Nursing Duty Order without cap, apron and white collar.
Committees, Conferences and Training Days
Personnel attending the above may wear jacket and skirt uniform or lightweight black dress (for those entitled to wear it, see note 12, page 8) or Public Duty Order, without cap, apron and white collar. Members not entitled to a medallion wear Badge 19 at the neck. (See page 30.)
Escort and Transport Duty
Public Duty Order with greatcoat or jacket and skirt as appropriate and white duty overall if necessary. The peak cap or beret may be worn instead of the hat.
Hospital Library Duty
Jacket and skirt uniform, or Public Duty Order without apron, or auxiliaries' overall (see page 39) may be worn. (For badges see page 25.) (For Auxiliaries see page 12.)
Mobile Units
Special Duty Uniform (see page 39); crash helmet, with beret as alternative when not riding; greatcoat and/or black waterproof and black gumboots if required.
Scramble Duty
Special Duty Uniform (see page 39); hat, beret or peak cap; greatcoat and/or black waterproof and black gumboots if required.
Social Occasions
Officers: the jacket and skirt is the normal wear.
(a) Brigade Headquarters, District/County, Area, Staff Officers Grade III and above, and County and Area Presidents and Vice-Presidents may wear the lightweight black dress; on occasions when decorations are worn, miniature medals may be worn on this dress.
(b) Corps and Divisional Officers may wear Public Duty Order on formal occasions. On informal occasions they may wear the dress without cap or apron, but with the white collar; members not entitled to a medallion wear badge 19 at the neck. (See page 30.)
N.C.O.s and Nursing Members:
As for Corps and Divisional Officers, as in (b) above.
Welfare Duty
Jacket and skirt uniform or Public Duty Order (with or without apron) and greatcoat, as appropriate. The peak cap or beret may be worn instead of the hat. (Supplementary regulations exist for Service Hospital Welfare Officers.)
General Mourning
An Officer in uniform when in mourning will wear a band of black crepe 3t inches wide round left arm midway between shoulder and elbow.
A Nursing Member may wear a similar mourning band of black cloth material.
UNIFORM AND DISTINGUISHING MARKS AUTHORISED FOR SENIOR OFFICERS AND SPECIAL CATEGORIES
The regulation uniform (see pages 36-39) is worn with the following adjustments:
Commandant-in-Chief
The jacket should be double-breasted with Brigade buttons in chromed metal.
The hat is a black soft felt tricorne with 2-inch brim with a band of black ribbon edged with narrow white stripes of equal width, and on the left side a 4i-inch rosette of the same ribbon with free ends; hat tuft is white. Badge 73 in centre of rosette.
Deputy Commandant-in-Chief
As for Commandant-in-Chief, but the hat tuft is black below and white above.
Superintendent-in-Chief
As for Commandant-in-Chief, but the hat tuft is white below and black above.
Deputy Superintendent-in-Chief
As for Commandant-in-Chief, but with Brigade black horn buttons on jacket; hat tuft is black.
Headquarters Officers holding the rank of crossed stretchers
As for Deputy Superintendent-in-Chief. With beret or peaked cap, badge 73 (see page 29) is worn.
Presidents and Vice-Presidents
District/ County Presidents and Vice-Presidents and all Area, Corps and Divisional Presidents and Vice-Presidents may wear uniform jacket and skirt and greatcoat. The jacket should be double-breasted. The Presidents' badge is worn on the right lapel of the jacket (see pages 28-29).
District/ County, Area Presidents and Vice-Presidents may wear the lightweight black dress on informal occasions.
District/ County Presidents and Vice-Presidents wear the black felt hat authorised for Presidents (see page 19).
On all informal occasions all Presidents and Vice-Presidents may wear the regulation beret with the Presidents' badge on the left front (see pages 20 and 29).
Medical Practitioners
Whatever their Brigade appointment, all registered Medical Practitioners wear -k inch scarlet piping around the edges of their shoulder straps.
State Registered Nurses
Whatever their Brigade appointment, all State Registered Nurses on the General Part of the Register wear a red enamel bar t inch above the base of their shoulder straps. All appointed Nursing Officers wear grey shoulder straps of regulation size (see page 36). Nursing Officers dress is 1 ;ack and white check, over which a black shoulder cape is worn; the red bar and rank markings are placed on the shoulders of the cape, centred on t.he seams; the bar and rank markings need not be worn on the dress except If the cape is discarded on duty (e.g. in hot weather).
General Trained State Registered Nurses who are not Nursing Officers but are appointed "one star" Nurses, wear the Nursing Officers' uniform. They do not wear the shoulder cape or grey shoulder straps.
State Certified Midwives and Nurses on Special Parts of the State Register, who are appointed "one star" Nurses, wear the Officers black and white stripe dress with Army Nurses pattern cap (as worn by Nursing Officers). They do not wear the shoulder cape or grey shoulder straps. .
State Certified Midwives and Nurses on Special Parts of the State Reglster wear a purple enamel bar t inch above the base of their shoulder straps. The purple bar is not worn in addition to the red bar.
State Enrolled Nurses
Whatever their Brigade appointment, State Enrolled Nurses wear a green enamel bar t inch above the base of their shoulder straps.
Corps Superintendents and Officers
All Corps Officers wear a white metal bar t inch above the base of their shoulder straps. If qualified for any other bar, it is worn t inch below th e white Corps bar.
Transport Officers
Transport Officers wear the letter "T" immediately above the base of their shoulder straps.
Secretaries
Officers and lVIembers holding the appointment of Secretary up to and including Area Secretary, wear the Secretary's badge. (See page 27.)
Reserve and Retired Lists
Officers and Members wear the letter "R" immediately above the base of their shoulder straps. (See General Regulation 92 on sanction for wearing uniform.)
Administrative Members
Administrative Members wear the jacket and skirt uniform and greatcoat with regulation plain black horn buttons. The tie is fastened with badge 25 (see page 30). The head-dress is the peak cap or beret worn with badge 25. For flashes see page 23.
St. John Auxiliaries
St. John Auxiliaries may wear the regulation black armlet and auxiliaries' badge. They may wear the white duty overall with plain black buttons, or the auxiliaries' overall (see page 39).
Closed Divisions
Employees of uniformed organisations such as the Police Force, British Railways or a Public Company, enrolled as a Division, may wear the uniform of the body to which they belong with Brigade Badge 1582 (see page 29), providing sanction has been obtained from their employers.
Acting Officers
Acting Officers and Officers Acting on Probation wear Officers' uniform with badges of the acting rank.
Officers and Members holding only one certificate
Holders of only a First Aid Certificate wear regulation uniform with Brigade buttons but not badge 3655/ 1582.
Probationary Members holding only a Nursing Certificate are not qualified to wear Brigade uniform until they obtain a First Aid Certificate. Exceptions may however be made with indoor uniform if it is necessary for them to wear this for training or for nursing services.
Officers and Members serving in and with other Organisations
Officers and Members serving in and with certain other uniformed organisations indicate their St. John membership as follows:
R.N. V.A.D. Reserve
St. John uniform is worn on V.A.D. training or service in R.N. Hospitals. Officers serving as V.A.D. Members in hospital wear the grey uniform dress without badges of rank. Members of this Reserve wear the V.A.D. badge on a black petersham armlet on the left arm midway between shoulder and elbow on indoor uniform; and on the left sleeve of the jacket and greatcoat midway between the elbow and bottom of sleeve. V.A.D. badges can be obtained from the Stores Department on applications endorsed by Commissioners; on resignation from the R.N. V.A.D. Reserve, the badges must be returned to Divisional Superintendents for cancellation by Brigade Headquarters.
N ationa! Hospital Service Reserve
Brigade Members enrolled in the N.H S.R., and members of the N.H.S.R. sponsored by the Brigade, wear the following N.H.S.R. insignia on Brigade uniform:
The N.H.S.R. cloth badge: on indoor uniform on a black armlet on the left middle upper arm when on N.H.S.R. duty; on the greatcoat on middle forearm of left sleeve.
The N.H.S.R. metal badge: on indoor uniform on the right side of apron bib on the hemline immediately below button; Nursing Officers may wear the badge on right side of shoulder cape. On jacket and greatcoat the badge is worn on the right front immediately above badge 3655/ 1582 (or County emblem). (See page 28.)
The N.H.S.R. badges awarded for hospital training are worn on the armlet to the front of N.H.S.R. emblem.
Officers serving as N.H.S.R. auxiliaries will normally wear the grey uniform dress (supplied as personal issue by the Regional Hospital Boards); if the Brigade Officers dress is worn on N.H.S.R. duty, badges of rank should not be worn.
Civil Defence
Brigade Members enrolled in the Civil Defence Corps may wear the following Civil Defence insignia on Brigade uniform:
Civil Defence or Industrial Civil Defence brooch-badge: elther badge, but not both, may be worn in position as described for N.H.S.R. metal badge. (See above and page 28.)
Civil Defence Instructors badge: on left mlddle forearm of Jacket only. The Civil Defence Instructors cloth badge is issued in gold thread for those holding a "special" certificate from a Home Office School, in silver thread for those holding an "ordinary" certificate from a Home Office School, and in blue thread for a "local course" certificate (see page 28).
Civil Defence Welfare Section: when on Civil Defence Welfare duty, Civil Defence Welfare flashes on greatcoat at top of both sleeves, flashes being placed immediately below. Civil D efence cloth badge mstead of Brigade badge on beret.
Civil Defence exercises: Public Duty Uniform will normally be worn but Special Duty Uniform may be authorised by the Commissioner. (See page 39.)

The regulation hat for Officers (except as described on page 11) and Members is black felt (wool, fur or lightweight). The centre of the cockade or bow is on the left side, as illustrated: one-third of the distance from the outer corner of the eye to the front of the ear. The regulation ribbons are described below:

ORDERS, DECORATIONS AND MEDALS
Orders, Decorations and Medals if awarded must be worn when ordered. Medals are not normally worn on Public Duty but may be ordered on special occasions, e.g. if Royalty is present.
Medals are worn in a horizontal line on the left breast. Life-saving medals (Albert Medal excepted) are worn on the right breast. Medals must be suspended from a brooch, no part of which shall be seen, or may be stitched on a frame covered with black cloth "Court style". On the jacket they will be worn over the medal ribbons; in Nursing Duty Order medals are worn immediately above the left apron bib button in line with the apron top edge. Nursing Officers wear medals on the shoulder cape, the lower edge of medals just covering white piping. Medals and decorations are not worn on the greatcoat When there are more medals than can be accommodated in a line, they will be overlapped, the first (senior) medal on the wearer's right being full-faced overlapping the second, and so on. On no account will a second line be worn.
All medals, except dull bronze medals, must be kept polished and bright. Medals are worn to show the Sovereign'S head, and first earned clasps are worn next to the medal.
When medals are worn the ribbons will normally be 1t inches long, and shorter ribbons should not be worn. Owing to the different length of medals it may be necessary to have ribbons longer than It inches. In any case, the lower edges of medals or points of stars must be in line.
Decorations or medals issued with a bow are worn without the bow in uniform, but with the bow in civilian attire.
Decorations worn on the breast by Members of the Order or by women members of the Brigade, when not wearing uniform may be placed on the corsage of their dresses as they think best.
In uniform, Commanders (and above) of Orders of Knighthood, etc., ,yill wear the neck badge with the riband under the shirt collar and the badge over the tie. If a second badge is worn it will be suspended from a riband appearing i inch below the top button-hole of the jacket.
Medals of other organisations including Railway Medals
The senior medal granted for not less than 10 years service by the British Transport Commission may be worn on Brigade uniform on jacket right front above the Brigade badge 3655/ 1582 and on right side of apron bib on indoor uniform.
Medal Ribbons if awarded must be worn
Ribbons worn without decorations are t inch in depth and are worn on the left breast of the jacket or indoor uniform. On the jacket, the bottom of the bottom row of ribbons will be in line with top of Brigade badge (3655 / 1582); on indoor uniform ribbons will be placed on the hemline of the apron bib, below the left breast button. Nursing Officers will wear ribbons on the shoulder cape, the bottom of lower row to be inches above the white piping. Ribbons will not be worn on the greatcoat.
There is no specific rule about the number of ribbons to be worn one row, the number being governed by the physique of the wearer and the WIdth of the lapel. No ribbon should be fully obscured by the lapel of the jacket." As many ribbons as convenient will be placed in one row before another row IS started. An incomplete row will be placed centrally above the top complete row, and will contain the ribbons of the senior orders, decorations or medals.
Ribbons are best stretched over firm cam"as stiffeners and then stitched to the uniform without intervals. In Nursing Duty Order and the lightweight black dress, the ribbons are worn on a brooch for easy detachment.

UNIFORM LENGTH
Particular attention should be paid to correctness of length since the smartness of Brigade uniform is adversely affected if the regulation lengths are not adhered to by all Officers and Members.
GREATCOAT
Dark-grey cloth of approved pattern and shade.
Double-breasted lancer front; 10 buttons No. 13, top buttons 10 inches apart, lowest buttons 5 inches apart on a level with the top of pockets. Two half belts at back, width 2 inches, with mitred ends, buttoned over with two buttons No. 13. Seam back, with 4-inch inverted pleat from waist to hem, stitched down to lower hip level. Vertical slit pockets. Shoulder straps 2! inches at base and It inches at top with pointed ends fastened with buttonhole and button No. 14 under collar. Two buttons No. 14 on each sleeve end. Coat edges 1 inch stitched, bottom turned up and hemmed. Length 14 inches from ground; dress must be covered. Coats may be lined.
JACKET
Black serge or barathea double-breasted, tailored seams, turn-down collar and revers; two outside patch pockets with flap, buttonhole and button No. 14, one inside breast pocket in lining; shoulder straps 2t inches at base and Ii inches at top with pointed ends fastened with buttonhole and button No. 14 under collar; two rows of three buttons No. 15 on front; two buttons No. 14 on each sleeve end. Panel back.
SKIRT
Black serge or barathea, with tailored seams, panelled front with knife pleats starting 4 inches above the knee and not less than 3 inches in depth, thus making the panel appear to be a wide box pleat. Side seams and a plain back. Length 15 to 16 inches from the ground.
SHIRT
White shirt (men's type) with attached collar or detachable semi-stiff collar.
TIE
Plain black.
GLOVES
Plain white with 3-line stitching on back.
STOCKINGS
Plain black.
SHOES
Black leather laced or plain, the heels not to exceed 2 inches in height, the heel base being not less than 1 inch. Plastic or rubber heels will be worn for hospital work In inclement weather black overshoes may be worn.
WATERPROOF
Plain black.
OFFICER'S LIGHTWEIGHT BLACK DRESS
For Brigade Headquarters, District/ County, Area, Staff Officers Grade III and above, and for District/ County, Area Presidents and Vice-Presidents. For occasions when this dress may be worn see Hot Weather Order (page 8) and Social Occasions, Committees, Conferences and Training Days (page 10). Shirtwaist type dress in black Moygashel "Springback" linen and terylene material. Bodice with shirt-type centre front fastening with four buttons, No. 14; one dart each side of bodice back and front from waist, and one dart (optional) each shoulder front. Turned-down collar measuring 2i inches from neckband at centre back, tapering to 1t inches at front. Patch pocket on right side of bodice measuring 41 by 41 inches bottom corners rounded, t inch box pleat down centre, 1 inch outside turn-back hem at top. Top edge of pocket in line with upper edge of second button from top. Shoulder straps 2t inches at base, I! inches at top with pointed ends, fastened at point with button No. 14 under collar. Short sleeves, elbow length, with 1 inch turn-back cuff. Panelled skirt, with centre panel approximately 7t inches to 8 inches in width, with two inverted pleats at front and two at back, matching to bodice darts; 3t inch deep pleats, opening 91 inches above hem edge; the pleated material should continue up to waist and not be cut away as this maintains good shape and hang of skirt. Hem 3 inches deep. Zip fastener opening on left side. Length 15 to 16 inches off the ground 1 inch wide belt with pointed ends to go through centre ring (self material), fastening back on to buttons No. 14 placed to meet darts and pleat seams.
Brigade flash on each arm 1 inch below shoulder seam; gorget patches small size; they and all insignia, including buttons, should be detachable for laundering.
N URSING DRES
The dress described will be worn by all officers and members III the following approved materials:
Officers (Nursing Officers ex cepted): black and white stripe.
Stripes are horizontal on the back shoulder yoke, cuffs, and back of collar. Stripes are vertical on all other parts of the dress.
Nursing Officers: black and white check.
N.C.O.s and Members: grey.
Full length coat dress. Front opening concealed under 2t inches hem, with two darts each side running from waist-line to nothing on bodice and skirt. Front dart from under arm side seams. Back of dress with shoulder yoke, yoke being stitched i in. from lower edge; centre inverted pleat from yoke to hem, the pleat stitched from waistline downwards in keeping with hip measurements; two darts each side of centre pleat from waist-line tapering to nothing on bodice and skirt.
Two deep pockets with openings in side seams of dress skirt. Patch pockets each side of bodice front, depth 5t inches, width 4 inches, with flaps 1t inches deep. Pockets edge-stitched to bodice and divided vertically by machine-stitching which does not include the flap. Button No. 14 fastened with ring through flap and dress.
Turned-down semi-stiffened collar of the dress material 2 inches deep at centre back, with rounded fronts, stitched t inch from edge.
One piece sleeves gathered at the wrist into 21 inches slightly stiffened cuff, stitched! inch from edge, closed with buttonhole and button No. 14, detachable. Sleeve with 4 inch opening in line with cuff opening. Dress with 3 inch hem, length 15 inches from the ground.
WAIST BELT
Officers: Black petersham or approved elastic webbing 2t inches wide, regulation white metal buckle.
Nursing Officers: Black petersham or approved elastic webbing 2t inches wide, with regulation white metal buckle.
N.C.O.'s and Members: Dress material with stiffened interlining 2 inches wide, double stitched ! inch from edge with one end mitred, closed with metal hook and bar in line with left side of apron bib.
DETACHABLE SHOULDER STRAPS
Officers wear black, and Nursing Officers regulation grey detachable shoulder straps measuring 2! inches at base narrowing to It inches at top, held in position by a narrow band of dress material at sleeve and button No. 14 at neck-line under the collar.
Nursing Members who are S.E.N. and those on Reserve or Retired List wear their distinguishing marks on detachable or fixed stiffened shoulder straps made of dress material. The straps 2! inches at base narrowing to I t inches at top, attached to the dress through t inch wide loops on the shoulder seams, and button No. 14 at neck-line under the collar.
APRON
Three piece shaped skirt on waist band with square darted bib. St. John Cross 4i inches square in black satin stitch i inch in width on centre of bib.
Top of Cross 3! inches from top of apron.
Two darts on each side of skirt back. t inch hem on back edges of skirt. Front panel joined to side-back panels by flat seaming. Hem at bottom 2t inches.
Bib, two darts tapering to nothing from waist-band. Hems at sides of bib I! inches. Hem at top of bib 2t inches. Two buttonholes in top hem of bib, to fit No. 14 buttons on dress bodice patch pockets, parallel with the side hems and 2 inches to 2} inches, according to bust size, from side edges. Side edges of bib must cover outer edges of dress patch pockets.
Waist-band Ii inches wide, edge-stitched extending beyond the back edges of skirt and closing with three buttons and buttonholes. Back edges of skirt should meet at belt. Apron 1 inch shorter than dress.
WHITE COLLAR
Detachable white collar (a) Trubenised or (b) interlined semi-stiff; 2 inches in depth at centre back, rounded fronts, stitched t inch from edge. Five buttonholes worked in neck binding of collar.
Small buttons sewn to neck of dress to correspond with buttonholes. The white collar must conceal dress collar.
CAP (for illustrations see pages 20-21) Officers: American type cap, white cambric or organdie. Two inch hem with 1 inch black Cross embroidered in centre.
Nursing Officers: Army Nurses pattern, white cambric or organdie, 27 inches square. One inch black Cross embroidered in angle of tail, centred 2t inches from hemstitching on straight of stuff and 3! inches from hemstitch angle.
N.C.O.s and Members: An oblong of white cambric or organdie 29 inches by 19 inches hemstitched all round 2 inches from edge. One inch black Cross embroidered in centre front of hem.
NURSING OFFICER SHOULDER CAPE
Regulation thin black woollen material, 11 inches from neckband to base; neckband ! inches deep; t inch white piping inset round bottom and fronts
allowing 2t inches border at bottom and front angle tum, narrowing to 1t inches at neckline; 2 inches opening in bottom hem at centre back; seams on shoulder and cross seams shape top of arm; fastened by hook at neckband front.
CORRIDOR CAPE
Circular cape, in dark grey approved woollen material 30 inches in length' lined scarlet flannel; step and fall collar; straps cross over in front and at back.
FRILLIES
White organdie; depth 4t inches.
DUTY OVERALL
White lancer front coat overall with side fastening made in fully shrunk satin drill. Long sleeves with one button No. 14 cuff fastening, turn down pointed collar, ten buttons No. 15 on front bodice, half belt at back with two buttons No. 15 fastening, two hip pockets with flaps, St. John Cross on centre bodice. Length 15 inches from ground.

AUXILIARIES' OVERALL
Grey, with black facings, plain buttons.
SPECIAL DUTY UNIFORM
Black proofed drill jacket and trousers. Jacket zip centre front opening with pointed collar; two diagonal zipped pockets; adjustable side straps; regulation size shoulder straps fastened button No. 14; sleeves eased into cuffs fastened button No. 14; collar, cuffs, front opening edges and bottom stitched ! inch from edge. Trousers zip fastening on left, pocket on right; adjustable waistband.

Plain black with V shaped front with no pockets. May not be worn on ceremonial and official occasions.
