The St. John Ambulance Brigade.

APPENDIX I. OF MEDALS AND DECORATIONS.

No badges other than those of the prescribed pattern issued from Headquarters and no medals or decorations, except those granted or authorised to be worn by the Sovereign shall, unless specially sanctioned, be worn on unifonn or on Brigade duty in plain clothes. Medals may not be worn on the greatcoat.

The order in which decorations, medals and ribands are to be worn with Brigade uniform and on Brigade duty in plain clothes is as shown in Appendix II.

These are worn in a horizontal line on the left breast. Life Saving medals (Albert medal excepted) are worn on the right breast. They are either stitched to the tunic or more commonly suspended from a brooch, no part of which shall. be seen, or they may be worn stitched on a frame covered with black cloth (court style). In full dress they will be worn in a line midway between the first and second buttons below the neck, and in service dress over the ribbons already stitched to the tunic.

\,yhen there are more medals than can normally be accommodated in a line they will then be overlapped, the first (senior) medal on the wearer's right being full-faced overlapping the second, and so on. On no account will a second line be worn.

All medals, except dull bronze medals, must be kept polished and bright. Medals will be worn so as to show the Sovereign's head, and first earned clasps will be worn next to the medal.

When medals are worn the ribbons will normally be Ii inches long, and shorter ribbons should not be worn. Owing to the different lengths of medals it may be necessary to have ribbons longer than Ii inches. In any case, the lower edges or points ot stars must be in line.

In the case of medals with clasps, 1 inch of the ribbon is to appear at top, and the ribbons of other medals (if any) are to be lengthened accordingly.

Decorations issued with a bow should be worn with that bow when worn separately, but when worn on a brooch with other Decorations bows will not be worn.

In Full Dress a maximum of four stars on the breast and three neck badges may be worn. In Service Dress a maximum of two stars on the breast and two neck badges may be worn.

Decorations worn on the breast by Sisters of the Order or by women member of the St. John Ambulance Association, qr by women members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, both at Home and Overseas, when not wearing uniform may be disposed on the corsage of their dress as they may think best.

The St. John Ambulance Brigade. 23

When wearing unifonn, their Decorations should be worn in the same position and in the same manner as is laid down for Brother members of the Order.

The Grand Cross Ribands of the Garter and Thistle are worn over the left shoulder, and all other Orders over the right shoulder. In Full Dress a riband worn round the neck with badge attached is worn inside and under the collar so that the badge hangs outside and about i inch below the collar. Further badges will be worn about 1 inch below the other.

In Service Dress the badge will be worn round the neck with the riband under the shirt collar and the badge over the tie. If a second badge is worn it will be suspended from a riband appearing about ! inch below the top buttonhole of the jacket.

The Senior Medal granted by a railway company may be worn on the right breast in Brigade Uniform provided that such Senior Medal is for not less than ten years' service.

Ribbons worn without decorations are i inch in length and are worn centrally over the left breast pocket button.

There is no specific rule about the number of ribbons to be worn in one row, the number being governed by the physique of the wearer and the width of the lapel. No ribbon should be fully obscured by the lapel of the jacket. As many ribbons as can be conveniently accommodated in one row will be worn before another row is started, and each succeeding row or portion of a row will be placed centrally below the first or subsequent rows.

Ribbons are stretched over cardboard stiffeners and then stitched to the uniform without intervals. In tropical uniform the ribbons are worn on brooches for easy detachment and can be obtained in sizes one to five depending on the number of ribbons worn.

Foreign Orders, Decorations, and War Medals.
