‘Podría decirse que existen dos lugares muy discretos y quizá opuestos que corresponden a la escultura. Uno de ellos es el lugar físico: en un paisaje o en un salón. El otro está en la imaginación del observador, en su experiencia y en su memoria. Son igualmente importantes y en muchos sentidos la obra está ahí, a la espera – casi como una trampa al acecho – de que la vida del espectador venga y la llene o la habite.

‘You could say that there are two very discrete and almost oppositional places where a sculpture belongs. One is physical: in a landscape or a room, and the other is in the imagination of the viewer, in his/her experience and memory. They are equally important and in many senses the work is there waiting – almost like a trap – for the life of the viewer to come and fill it, or inhabit it. And then once “captured” the art – or its arising – inhabits him or her.’

Antony Gormley’s work centres on the body as subject, object and place. In this exhibition, dramatic and enveloping installations are accompanied by earlier sculptures.

Taking the body as its point of departure, the exhibition is an invitation to embark on a journey through different kinds of space. It explores the ways in which we orient ourselves spatially; how we react when disoriented; how we relate to architecture and the built environment. It also probes the imaginative and emotional space of our inner beings.

Within the exhibition, space is defined and articulated by crowds and solitary figures – concrete, steel, cast iron or lead; representational or abstract; real or imagined – and voids where bodies could be.

In encountering these presences and absences, we are asked not to be passive onlookers, but to become part of the work as we walk through or around it, navigating and negotiating space.

You is a body form looking down at its own environment: it could be any body, it could be you. Throughout his career, Gormley has consistently used his own body as the starting point for sculptures that investigate what it feels like to be in a body, and to be a body in the world. In the 1990s he began to work with cast iron, making solid body-forms which are extremely heavy. As with his earlier lead body-cases, the figures originated as casts of the artist’s body, for which he had to hold a particular pose. Speaking of the moulding process, Gormley notes: ‘It requires a moment of stillness, of concentration. I am trying to make sculpture from the inside, by using my body as the instrument and the material. The form comes from the concentration.’

You was originally made to stand on top of the Roundhouse theatre in London, peering down over the city.

Además de la estatura y cintura de sus cuerpos, se tomaron otras trece medidas precisas de cada uno de los 300 participantes. Las ‘cajas corporales’ huecas de concreto vaciadas para la exposición se construyen de estas personalísimas dimensiones y tienen aperturas para la boca, los oídos, el ano y los genitales. Cada ‘sala’ rectangular representa el más pequeño espacio capaz de albergar a un ser humano en particular. Como señala Gormley: ‘Cada uno es diferente. The individual units that congregate to form Allotment III are derived from the vital statistics of real people from Monterrey who volunteered to take part in creating the work, all of whom are acknowledged with the work. Besides the height and width of their bodies, thirteen other precise measurements were taken from each of the 300 volunteers. The hollow concrete ‘body cases’ which will be cast during the exhibition are constructed from these very personal dimensions and have apertures for the mouth, ears, anus and genitals. Each rectangular ‘room’ represents the smallest space capable of sheltering a particular human being. As Gormley points out: ‘Each one is different. The difference really matters, particularly with the children. You begin to see the eager ones, the sad ones.’

Massed together they form a virtual, maze-like cityscape. Moving between the rows and blocks, you notice that these eyeless watchers face in all directions, and form groups and relationships. Gormley comments: ‘The body is our first habitation, the building our second body.

I wanted to use the form of this second body, architecture, to make concentrated volumes out of a personal space that carries the memory of an absent self, articulated through measurement …

Bodies and buildings, cities and cells, monuments and intimacies, each of the “rooms” in this piece is someone’s, is connected to the moving body of an individual, alive and breathing.’

‘At a certain point in the late nineties I started thinking about the relationship of mass and space as dynamic, taking hand forged balls and making constellations that convey something about entropy and aggregation in a direct way. The balls on the floor can roll about anywhere, other balls are fixed in clusters like molecules.

All bodies are attracted to each other and the relationship between man and dog is one of the oldest of attractions across species. This installation acknowledges that all bodies are bodies in space, whether they are the quarks and muons of the subatomic world or the planets of a solar system.’

La escultura de Antony Gormley siempre ha sido sobre ‘ser’. En sus primeras obras exploró esto fenomenológicamente mediante el uso de materiales como pan, ropa, hule, madera, piedra y plomo, observando que el trabajo de la escultura ‘es transformar lo que existe en el mundo exterior al unirlo con el mundo de la sensación, la imaginación y la voluntad’. Antony Gormley’s sculpture has always been about ‘being.’ In his early work he explored this phenomenologically through the use of materials such as bread, clothing, rubber, wood, stone and lead, observing that the job of sculpture ‘is to transform what exists in the outer world by uniting it with the world of sensation, imagination and will.’ He made his first bread work in 1981, using Mother’s Pride, the epitome of industrially-produced sliced white bread.

Dating from the late 1970s and early 1980s, Gormley’s early works were made during the Cold War when anxiety about the possibility of nuclear attack was at its height and the civil defence slogan was ‘Protect and Survive.’ Using materials such as bread, in this work Gormley focuses on our means of survival – food, shelter and defense – and our dependency on the material world.

Field (American), 1991 Terracota / Terracotta Gormley comenzó a trabajar en Field en México en 1990, colaborando con la familia Texca en la Parroquia de San Matías, Cholula. ‘Quería ver si podía hacer una obra que evocara el silencio de la tierra y la necesidad del tacto – la necesidad de tocar el otro lado de la vida que vive detrás de la apariencia. Necesitaba trabajar con otros y con la tierra para hacer algo directo con el fuego y la arcilla.

Yo quería usar mi vida para cambiar mi vida – para comenzar de nuevo – iniciar con una confrontación con la tierra y en esa tierra sembrar la posibilidad. También quería hacer algo que desafiara mis ideas de la forma – del refinamiento de la forma y cómo se da. En esta pieza nada está acabado – el proceso de creación de la pieza es sólo la familiaridad de cada creador y la confianza en los movimientos repetitivos de separar un trozo de la masa de arcilla y darle forma. No era un toque, sino el tacto mismo. Lo “compartido” del origen de esta obra fue lo más completo que jamás había intentado’.

Gormley began work on Field in Mexico in 1990, collaborating with the Texca family in the Parish of San Matías, Cholula. Field has since become one of Gormley’s best known works. More than 60 men, women and children worked on the project, each instructed to ‘take a hand-size ball of clay, and form it between the hands, into a bodysurrogate as quickly as possible. Place it at arm’s length in front of you and give it eyes.’ Together they created approximately 35,000 figures.

‘I wanted to see if I could make a work that evoked the silence of the ground and the necessity of touch – the necessity of touching the other side of life, that which lives behind appearance. I needed to work with others and with the earth, to do something direct with fire and clay.

I wanted to use my life to change my life – to start again – to start with a confrontation with the ground, and in that ground to plant possibility. I also wanted to make something that challenged my ideas of form – of the refinement of form and how that happens.

With this piece, nothing is finished – the process of making the piece is only each maker’s familiarity and trust in the repeated motions of separating a lump of clay from the kneaded mass and forming it.

There was not a touch, but touch itself. The “sharedness” of the origin of this work was the most complete of any I have attempted.’

Domain was a breakthrough, substituting space and light for mass and structure. There is no skin, each of those trajectories stops where the skin was: internal antennae charting the place where we all live – the other side of appearance.’

Drawing, for Antony Gormley, is a form of physical thinking, parallel to yet independent of his sculpture. The first set of drawings from the mid 1980s use a wide range of materials including blood, oil, pigment and earth, and explores our relationship to gravity, the planet, internal and external space.

In the group of intimate drawings from the early to mid 1990s, Body & Light, the relationship of the darkness of the body to light, the horizon and extended fields is explored. The act of drawing is ‘a journey into the unnamed parts of our internal landscape, or out into the unknown,’ and can take Gormley to places which are not possible in life or sculpture, from outer space to deep water. Most of the Body & Light drawings were made in the Lake District. ‘I am attracted by the darkness of the water in Coniston Water, and feeling contained by this fluid element,’ he has said.

Gormley’s most recent drawings, many exhibited here for the first time, no longer picture the body but are traces of its direct action.

‘¿Para mí qué es dibujar? Es una especie de magia, una especie de necesidad. Dibujar es un intento por fijar al mundo, no como es, sino como existe dentro de mí. Antony Gormley considera que las nueve litografías que componen el portafolio de Body & Soul se encuentran entre sus obras claves, dado que en ellas los espacios exteriores e interiores del cuerpo se fusionan. Antony Gormley considers the nine prints that make up the portfolio Body & Soul as being among his key works, because in them the exterior and interior spaces of the body are unified. The prints have a sequence and can, he says, be seen as ‘a meditation on twoness and oneness.’ ‘The body has within it unity and division, single foci like the mouth, the navel, the penis, that lie on the body’s central axis; and dualities like the hands or the eyes that function in pairs.’ While the white prints bear the imprints of hands, knees, forehead and spine, the five black prints each represent one of the body’s main orifices, which appear as white marks on a black ground. Though made from actual impressions of the artist’s body, their anatomical origin is deliberately unclear; they might be quite different natural forms such as shells, a comet, a planet or a primitive life form. The effect is of being inside the body and looking out at the universe.

Grip II, 2006 Bloques de acero inoxidable / Stainless steel blocks Para Gormley, la serie Blockwork se inició como un intento por hacer al cuerpo como un edificio, con bloques soldados de acero. ¿Cómo se hace un muro de ladrillo que se sustente solo y que al mismo tiempo siga los contornos de la forma? Gormley describe estas obras como ‘un intento por convertir al píxel en algo físico: sustituyendo la estructura de una imagen digital por la anatomía del cuerpo’. Las esculturas dependen de la existencia de tensión entre la claridad de los bloques de acero y un sentido de exposición a la orilla de la obra, como si la luz y el espacio carcomieran un núcleo corporizado.

For Gormley the Blockwork series started as an attempt to make a body as a building, out of welded blocks of steel. How do you make a self-supporting brick wall of blocks, while at the same time following the contours of the form? Gormley describes the works as ‘an attempt to make the pixel physical: substituting the structure of a digital image for the anatomy of the body.’ The sculptures depend on there being a tension between the clarity of the steel blocks and a sense of exposure at the edge of the work, light and space seem to eat away at the embodied core.

All of Gormley’s work is an investigation into the nature of the space a human being inhabits. ‘I’ve never been interested in making statues,’ he explains. ‘What I try to show is the space where the body was, not to represent the body itself.’ His recent matrices and expansion pieces are so open in structure as to become almost drawings in space, and each reveals an empty body-space at its core. ‘Neither architecture nor anatomy,’ as Gormley insists, they are ‘more like the random matrices found in fractal geometry.’ Although some body-shapes may be immediately apparent among the froth like polyhedrons, others will only manifest themselves slowly, over time, as we move around them.

‘These bundles of nothing are the most dematerialized works I have ever made. The bodies are free, lost in space, weightless, and with no internal determination – they are not “acting.” They appear as emergent zones: you cannot be sure whether the bubble matrix is produced by the body zone or the zone by the matrix. The bubble matrix series is the closest I get to Brancusi’s notion that you can turn an object into light.

He did it by polishing sculptures, whereas I have tried to do it by abandoning weight and mass and dissolving surface.’

Originalmente concebida para la Vieja Cárcel de Charleston, EUA en 1991, las cajas corporales huecas de Learning to Think encierran un vacío que por implicación se conecta con el invisible e inaccesible vacío de arriba.

Antony Gormley comenzó a hacer moldes de su propio cuerpo en 1980, produciendo formas huecas de plomo en las cuales el cuerpo ausente es sustituido por el aire. El plomo tiene peculiares poderes de protección además de ser altamente tóxico.

Originally conceived for the Old Jail in Charleston, USA in 1991, the hollow lead body cases of Learning to Think enclose a void that by implication connects to the unseen and inaccessible void above.

Antony Gormley began making moulds of his own body in 1980, producing hollow lead forms in which the absent body is replaced by air. Lead has peculiar powers of protection as well as being highly toxic. It is infinitely malleable, but becomes resilient once it

is formed into an enclosing shape. Lead’s life-in-death properties are reflected in the process of making the body-cases, during which the artist is wrapped in cloth and plaster and concentrates on being completely still in order to hold his chosen position. Describing the mental processes involved in making the moulds for his lead bodycases, Antony Gormley says: ‘I agree to become inert. I agree to go into another level of existence,’ and adds: ‘I want to recapture for sculpture an area of human experience which has been hidden for a while. It is to do with very simple things; what it feels like to look out and see, what it feels like to be cold or frightened, or what it feels like to be absolutely quiet and just aware of the passage of air around your body.’ Besides being both memorials of a particular time and action and containers of memory, the body-cases are sites of transformation.

Seeds VI, 2008 Plomo / Lead Usando materiales como las balas de plomo, en esta obra Gormley se enfoca en nuestros medios de supervivencia – alimentos, techo, defensa – y en nuestra dependencia del mundo material. Seeds, una obra concebida originalmente en 1986, consta de cientos de balas calibre 38, vaciadas en plomo y apiladas como una especie de monte de granos o racimo.

Using materials such as lead bullets, in this work Gormley focuses on our means of survival – food, shelter and defense – and our dependency on the material world. Seeds, a work originally conceived in 1986, consists of hundreds of lead-cast 38-calibre bullets, heaped up like a pile of grain or pods.

Firmament, el antiguo nombre dado al cielo nocturno, trae a la mente una matriz ensamblada de volúmenes que delinean una constelación celestial al tiempo que implican también la forma de un cuerpo perdido dentro de ella. Un campo expandido de casi 2,135 elementos de acero y 1,238 esferas de acero unidas con soldadura, la estructura poligonal irregular de Firmament se disuelve y resuelve por toda la sala.

Es literalmente un dibujo en el espacio, oprimido contra las paredes del recinto. La intención de Gormley es que el Firmament se cierna sobre el observador, imprimiéndole sensaciones de claustrofobia y la amplitud del paisaje al mismo tiempo, poniendo a prueba nuestra experiencia del espacio.

La ingeniería de Firmament ha sido parte de una colaboración entre Antony Gormley y Tristan Simmonds.

Firmament, the ancient name for the night sky, brings to mind an assembled matrix of volumes that map a celestial constellation, while also implying the form of a body lost within it. An expanded field of nearly 2,135 steel elements and 1,238 steel balls welded together, the non regular polygonal structure of Firmament dissolves and resolves throughout the gallery.

Literally a drawing in space, pressed against the walls of the gallery, Gormley’s intention is for Firmament to loom over the viewer, giving a sense of both claustrophobia and landscape, testing our experience of space.

Firmament has been engineered as part of a collaboration between Antony Gormley and Tristan Simmonds.

Floor es la obra más antigua de Gormley en esta exposición. Floor is Gormley’s earliest work in this exhibition. By replicating the outline of a pair of feet inside and outside their silhouette, this work alludes to an energy field that renders the body-zone porous and open. It is also a diagram of the resolution and dissolution of form, a reoccurring theme in Gormley’s work.

Insider V / VI / VII / VIII / IX, 1998 Hierro vaciado / Cast iron ¿Qué es un Insider? El Insider es al cuerpo lo que la memoria es a la conciencia: una especie de residuo, algo que se deja detrás.

Es un núcleo más que un esqueleto. Es un modo de permitir que las cosas que le son internas al cuerpo – las actitudes y emociones incrustadas en una postura u ocultas por un ademán – afloren y se revelen ante los ojos. Son igualmente extrañas e íntimas.

Las piezas llevan en forma concentrada el rastro del cuerpo y su paso por la vida. Esto tiene una relación directa con el dolor.

Gormley ve estas formas reducidas como antenas para una peculiar elasticidad que existe dentro de todos nosotros, que nos permite soportar el sufrimiento, pero que se crea mediante la experiencia dolorosa. No hay juicio sobre esto. Su asuteridad no es la desnudez que revela la carne, es el resultado de haber retirado la carne, una pérdida que no se mediatiza por el sentimiento sino que simplemente se acepta. El Insider trata de amplificar la lucha entre el ser y la nada.

What is an Insider? An Insider is to the body what memory is to consciousness: a kind of residue, something that is left behind. It is a core rather than a skeleton. It is a way of allowing things that are internal to the body - attitudes and emotions embedded in posture or hidden by gesture - to become revealed. They are equally alien and intimate.

The pieces carry in concentrated form the trace of the body and its passage through life. This has a direct relationship to pain.

Gormley sees these reduced forms as antennae for a particular kind of resilience that exists within all of us, that allows us to bear suffering but is itself created through painful experience. There is no judgement about this. Their bareness is not the nakedness that reveals the flesh, it is the result of having had the flesh taken away, a loss which is not sentimentalised, but accepted. The Insider tries to up the ante between being and nothingness.

Breathing Room can be read as a three-dimensional drawing in space, hovering between being an image of architecture and being architecture itself. Changing from being an illuminated object and becoming self lit, the work assumes an unstable position between the virtual and the real, challenging the way in which space is described and contained by architecture.

Alluding to mirroring as well as the necessity of self-knowledge through reflection, the two body forms reference the tension between the palpable and the perceptual that runs throughout the exhibition, as well as engaging the building and the space it contains as part of the material of the show.

BIOGRAFÍA / Biography Antony Gormley nació en Londres en 1950. Después de titularse en arqueología, antropología e historia del arte en el Colegio Trinity, de Cambridge, se trasladó India, donde se interesó en el Budismo y estudió meditación vipassana. Tres años después regresó a Inglaterra a estudiar en la Escuela Central de Arte, Colegio Goldsmith y la Escuela Slade de Bellas Artes.

En el transcurso de los últimos veinticinco años, usando su propio cuerpo como sujeto, herramienta y material, Antony Gormley ha revitalizado la imagen humana en la escultura a través de su investigación del cuerpo como un lugar de memoria y transformación. Ha creado algunas de las obras más ambiciosas e icónicas de las últimas dos décadas, incluyendo Field, The Angel of the North en Gateshead, Quantum Cloud en el Támesis en Greenwich, y Another Place, ahora permanentemente ubicada en la Playa Crosby, cerca de Liverpool en el Reino Unido.

Antony Gormley was born in London in 1950. After taking a degree in Archaeology, Anthropology and Art History at Trinity College, Cambridge, he went to India, where he became interested in Buddhism and studied vipassana meditation. Three years later he returned to England to study at the Central School of Art, Goldsmiths College and the Slade School of Fine Art. Over the past twenty-five years, using his own body as subject, tool and material, Antony Gormley has revitalised the human image in sculpture through his investigation into the body as a place of memory and transformation. He has created some of the most ambitious and iconic works of the past two decades, including Field, The Angel of the North in Gateshead, Quantum Cloud on the Thames at Greenwich and Another Place, now permanently sited on Crosby Beach, near Liverpool, UK. Antony Gormley was awarded the Turner Prize in 1994, the South Bank Prize for Visual Art in 1999 and the Bernhard Heiliger Award for Sculpture in 2007 .
