Con gran entusiasmo presentamos esta muestra de Liliana Porter, artista con la que nos une una ya larga y afectuosa relación. Se trata de su primera exposición en Malba, una instalación site-specific creada específicamente para el espacio de la sala 3 del museo.

Nacida en Buenos Aires en 1941, Porter es una figura clave y protagonista para el arte latinoamericano desde los inicios del arte conceptual, cuando se estableció en Nueva York en 1964, hasta hoy. De entre su vasta producción, Malba posee obras históricas y emblemáticas como Wrinkle (1968) o Untitled With Books (1989) y contemporáneas como Red With Him II (2005) o el video Fox in The mirror (2007), todas ejemplos de sus diferentes etapas: desde el fotograbado de fines de los años 60 —y que da cuenta de su trabajo con el Graphic Workshop— hasta la fotografía y video contemporáneos, pasando por la pintura de gran formato de los años 80.

Luego de varias conversaciones a lo largo del último año sobre la posibilidad de organizar un proyecto con ella, Liliana presentó la propuesta acabada de El hombre con el hacha y otras situaciones breves, que incluía también el diseño detallado del espacio, realizado en colaboración con Ana Tiscornia. Así fue como, en lugar de invitar a un curador que hiciera una selección de obras de su último período —lo que también hubiese resultado de gran interés—, preferimos trabajar sobre la idea de la propia artista.

Esta instalación no consiste solamente en un nuevo proyecto de Porter sino que supone también una innovación en la concepción de su obra en tres dimensiones, que en este caso utiliza el espacio de la sala como el propio espacio compositivo de la obra: un ambiente al estilo de un set de filmación, o de un teatro de variedades (como el que viene trabajando desde los años 70), donde se suceden diversas acciones que desencadenan “situaciones breves”, en las que sus fantásticos personajes cobran vida. Completan la muestra una serie de collages sobre papel, también de 2013. El hombre con el hacha y otras situaciones breves demuestra así, una vez más, la vitalidad creativa y la incansable capacidad de reinventar ficciones de esta notable artista.

En 2003 Malba había colaborado en la edición del catálogo de la retrospectiva de Porter en el Centro Cultural Recoleta. Para acompañar la exposición que ahora presentamos no solo se publica este catálogo, que documenta fotográficamente la muestra y el diseño museográfico de la intervención espacial en el museo, sino que paralelamente se presentará además el nuevo libro editado por la Colección Cisneros, Conversaciones con Inés Katzenstein.

El mundo de Liliana Porter dejaría perplejo al eminente historiador del tiempo Stephen Hawking.

En el universo de Hawking, el nuestro, una taza que se cae de una mesa y se hace añicos en el piso basta para demostrar que el tiempo es irreversible. Según las inapelables leyes de la física el desorden aumenta con el tiempo y solo un truco del cine podría mostrar la secuencia inversa, en la que los añicos se recomponen y la taza vuelve intacta a la mesa.

La flecha del tiempo, que signa la dirección de la memoria, la entropía y la expansión del universo, deja irremediablemente la taza entera en el pasado y arroja al futuro los añicos en el piso.

En el universo anárquico de Porter, en cambio, las cosas suceden de otra manera. La taza bien podría ser la misma que observa Hawking, pero no hay principios de termodinámica que puedan dominar su soberana flecha del tiempo, ni leyes de Murphy capaces de contrariar su mirada piadosa con el desorden del mundo. Basta atender a su obstinada serie Reconstrucciones para comprobar cómo un elenco variado de pequeñas figuras dispuestas sobre un pedestal —un ratón Mickey de vidrio soplado veneciano, una pastora holandesa de porcelana, un pingüino de loza o una ovejita con un moño rojo—, pueden convivir con fotografías de las mismas piezas hechas añicos, que rizan el tiempo en un loop indecidible. La “verdad” documental de las fotos no deja dudas sobre el destino fatal del Mickey, la pastora, el pingüino o la ovejita, pero la presencia igualmente cierta de las figuras intactas junto al retrato restaña las heridas como por arte de magia y las devuelve sanas y salvas a su aletargada vida feliz de figuritas.

No es la única sorpresa que el universo Porter depararía al eximio Hawking. En otra serie, Trabajos forzados, un hombre diminuto puede picar con un hacha una enorme tabla de madera y congelar en el presente el destrozo pasado de sus hachazos, mientras que una mujer que barre, también minúscula, puede anticipar el futuro de una tarea interminable, frente a una larga estela de polvo rojo que dobla una decena de veces su tamaño. En las empresas hiperbólicas que por algún motivo los ocupan, el tiempo del trabajo es otro y se mide con otra escala, inversamente proporcional a la de los personajes. Pero también en los muchos diálogos que animan el mundo de Porter es posible saltar años, décadas y siglos, sin auxilio de máquinas del tiempo fantásticas: un niño playmobil puede conversar con el joven del Retrato de un hombre de Giovanni Bellini, un pingüino de madera años 50, alternar con Jesucristo, y el Che Guevara, codearse con Elvis Presley y una princesa tibetana.

Nadie resumió mejor que la propia Porter la lógica incontestable con la que desde los 80 viene burlando la cronología ceñida de la historia, los almanaques y los relojes, con una colección de juguetes, souvenires y adornos, dispuesta a su antojo en grabados, pinturas, fotografías, pequeñas instalaciones o películas. “Alguien podría protestar”, escribió anticipándose al recelo de los agnósticos, ¡¿cómo van a dialogar si no existen?! Pero entonces… ¿con quién estoy hablando ahora? ¿Cómo es posible que yo le esté hablando a usted si en este preciso momento en el que escribo usted no está (todavía) conmigo? Sin embargo, esta conversación, y la del pingüino con el salero, existen en un tiempo que no tiene antes ni después, que se mide de otra manera.

Pero la historia del tiempo de Porter se ha vuelto todavía más sinuosa en El hombre con el hacha y otras situaciones breves, su instalación más ambiciosa hasta la fecha, una suerte de suma poética de su micromundo y a la vez, si cabe la paradoja, despliegue desaforado de trastos viejos y piezas rotas, que convoca y a la vez destruye los trabajos forzados, las reconstrucciones y los diálogos, en el aquí y ahora de un tiempo y un espacio esta vez a gran escala. Trabajo forzado por antonomasia, El hombre con el hacha es una retrospectiva sui generis de la obra de Porter, el espectro más amplio de sus escalas y, al mismo tiempo, su destrucción calculada. Cinco tarimas blancas alojan un caos a primera vista inenarrable, que invita a acercarse, rodearlo, afinar el foco, averiguar el origen del cataclismo que arremolina los destrozos, piezas tumbadas de todos los tamaños, sillas caídas y hasta un piano patas arriba que parece haber conseguido salvarse de milagro. La enumeración siquiera parcial de lo que se ve obliga a nombrar una cosa y después otra, a organizar el recorrido desplazando el foco en el tiempo y en el espacio, pero frente a las tarimas blancas todo se ofrece a la vez, y si la vista se detiene en una cosa antes que en otra, lo que se graba en la memoria es el conjunto que El hombre con el hacha se ocupa de preservar completo, para no traicionar la inquietante belleza de lo que no tiene concierto. ¿Cómo describirlo sin violentar la libertad de la mirada que puede vagar por las piezas sin medida, sin rumbo, sin relato?

Pero, veamos. Ahí está en un extremo el hombre diminuto con el hacha, un posible comienzo si se atiende al título, que le da al personaje un protagonismo paradójico considerando sus escasos cinco centímetros. Aplicado como está, el hacha en alto, a la tarea de hacer trizas lo que encuentra, se diría que es ése el destino final, las trizas, de todo lo que se despliega de ahí en más. Pero puede que el tiempo avance en la dirección contraria y lo que vemos sean los restos de su afanosa y en parte fracasada empresa devastadora. La escala aumenta progresivamente desde las trizas hasta el piano entero, aunque también podría decrecer desde esos objetos conocidos fugados del mundo próximo —las sillas, las jarras, el piano—, hasta las réplicas en miniatura y los juguetes, habitantes de otros mundos a otra escala. Abrumado con el desorden, el que mira tiende a enumerar —barcos, libros, relojes, soldados, tazas, viajeros, pedazos de loza— e incluso a clasificar —adornos, souvenires, miniaturas—, pero en seguida ese orden se revela falso y se prueba otro —cosas enteras, cosas viejas, cosas rotas— y después otro —personajes célebres y anónimos, animales reales y ficticios—, aunque también ese intento fracasa porque las categorías con las que se podría clasificar un conjunto tan diverso se multiplican a tal punto que finalmente no hay nada que lo reúna más que la superficie de las tarimas, impecablemente blanca a pesar de la catástrofe.

Hay sin embargo pequeñas figuras en pie que saltan a la vista, breves escenas —¿las situaciones del título?—, que parecen aislarse por un momento del caos, islas de otros tiempos que atemperan la inquietud con el comienzo de un relato: un viajero que parte o regresa con su valija, una mujer que teje incansablemente, un hombre que intenta desenredar el embrollo de una soga, que al que mira tratando de desentrañar lo que ve se le antoja un compañero de camino. Aquí y allá hay barajas, piezas sueltas de dominó y damas chinas que convocan el azar —¿una clave?—, libros que traman el tiempo en historias con otro lenguaje y espejos que recortan una imagen discreta que gana independencia en el reflejo. La memoria, entretanto,

teje sus propias redes dentro y fuera del mundo de Porter: ¿no vimos en otra parte a ese soldado? Y ese pato ¿no cantaba con otros patos idénticos en un coro? ¿Pero cuándo, dónde, en qué mundo? ¿Y qué hacen ahí la hoz y el martillo y el auto de los Kennedy camino al martirio, imágenes repetidas hasta el cansancio en el nuestro? Al piano vertical, estamos seguros, nunca lo vimos.

Mareado con el vértigo de los saltos, el que mira acaba por desistir en su empeño de desenredar la maraña del tiempo y se entrega a la pura deriva por el paisaje de ruinas; en el fárrago, a fin de cuentas, asoma un calendario roto, y en el centro, una parva de relojes que ya no funcionan. Una vaga melancolía tiñe el conjunto a la distancia, pero si uno se acerca y se deja tentar por los detalles, un pato con el pelo erizado da risa y un jardinero que no aventaja en estatura al hombre con el hacha da una lección de templanza y estoicismo. En medio del desastre, absorto en su tarea ridícula, riega las plantas que todavía florecen en los pedazos de loza rota.

Queda claro en una última visión panorámica que en el universo de El hombre con el hacha reina una lógica que no acuerda con la de la taza rota de Hawking. Para entender cómo es posible ir y venir en el tiempo, destruir las cosas y recomponerlas, es preciso atender a las leyes que rigen el microcosmos de Porter, menos deudoras de la ciencia que de la metafísica doméstica o la fenomenología aplicada.

A Liliana Porter le gustan las cosas menudas. Como a Baudelaire, le gustan “la lustrosa limpieza, el brillo cegador de los colores, la violencia en el gesto y la decisión en la forma” de los juguetes, esos dobles artesanales del mundo adulto que dan cuerpo material a las fantasías infantiles. Pero también le gustan los adornos y los souvenires, objetos más enigmáticos llamados a miniaturizar la vida y las cosas en el interior burgués, dar presencia real a seres ficticios, mitificar personajes históricos o populares, jibarizar el recuerdo de viajes a lugares exóticos. Como los niños, Porter quiere ver el alma del juguete (esa “manía infantil”, Baudelaire otra vez, que es “una primera tendencia a la metafísica”), pero también quiere indagar esa estupefacción callada de los adornos, doblegar su inercia, sacudir su estupidez y componerles, en diálogo con ellos o con sus creadores anónimos, una biografía fisionómica. Quiere atender a los pedidos mudos que hacen las cosas para que se les hable por ellas mismas, según sus rasgos, sus achaques, su carácter.

Solo a primera vista, sin embargo, las figuras son simples juguetes o adornos. Cosecha paciente de sus desvelos en ferias populares, tiendas de aeropuertos, garage-sales y mercados de pulgas de todas las latitudes, los elegidos de Porter tienen algunas señas particulares que los hacen únicos, a pesar de su deslucida naturaleza de copias. A menudo tienen una doble vida y son también saleros, lámparas, perfumeros, casca-nueces, floreros o abre-botellas, de preferencia de los años 40 ó 50, figuras humanas o animales con una expresión particular en la mirada, por la que parecen desconcertadas cuando se encuentran con otras que no corresponden a su tiempo, ni a su cultura, ni a su especie, y con las que sin embargo “dialogan”. Porter las dispone en una especie de set bien iluminado y desnudo, sin ninguna referencia contextual más que las que traen a cuestas, y en ese limbo atemporal son invitadas a convivir con otras de

otras especies, otros tiempos, otras geografías, otras culturas, e incluso de otra naturaleza semiótica (una figura puede conversar con otra figura pero también con una foto, con su reflejo en el espejo, con la ilustración de un plato, una azucarera o un jarrón chino), en una suerte de escenario beckettiano despojado, lugar común de lo heteróclito, en el que la simple disposición se hace lenguaje. El realismo crudo de los objetos tridimensionales o el documentalismo de las fotos garantizan la “verdad” de lo que sucede y el espectador es llamado a dar por cierto el encuentro e imaginar el resto.

Porter recurre casi sin excepción a copias, objetos reproducidos en serie que han perdido el aura de la cosa única, y por lo tanto ahistóricos, deslocalizados, perdidos en la circulación anónima. Pero el arte de instalación opera como el reverso de la reproducción y dota de una nueva aura lo que convoca. Extrae las copias del espacio abierto, las compone en un nuevo “aquí y ahora” (la reformulación de la tesis benjaminiana es de Boris Groys) y las convierte en nuevos originales capaces de alentar otra clase de “iluminaciones profanas”. A esa reconversión topológica se suma la variación de la escala que opera por contraste y da otras libertades.

El creador de mundos en miniatura se enfrenta al desorden del suyo con un nuevo orden que es una versión de la experiencia reducida y manipulable, pero ni siquiera ese principio que define al miniaturismo —la escala reducida— organiza la colección de Porter. El suyo es un mundo sin escala que extraña la mirada y mueve al diálogo en una especie de esperanto imaginario.

Pero si lo heteróclito reina en el mundo de Porter es también porque no hay un principio estético que guíe las elecciones y el casting de los minidiálogos. El coleccionismo de cosas menudas convive con el gusto pop por los objetos comunes, los clisés y la distancia y, aunque a primera vista la recurrencia de lo demodé, la acumulación, la teatralidad y el ser impropio de las cosas podría darle un leve aire kitsch a las elecciones, se descubre enseguida que se trata de otro anacronismo, otra acumulación, otra teatralidad y otra forma de ser una cosa y otra cosa: más que al frenesí del abarrotamiento y a la recarga de emociones, las “situaciones” tienden a la selección y al afecto distanciado. Como los surrealistas, Porter confía en la elocuencia de los encuentros insólitos, como Joseph Cornell puede darle misterio a un conjunto de cosas viejas con muy poco, como Marcel Broodthaers puede ser irónica y absurda, pero es más realista que los surrealistas y más minimalista y más pop que Cornell y Broodthaers. Como Warhol encuentra en la repetición la diferencia, como Lichtenstein busca la emoción desafectada, pero es menos plana que los pop y más vital que los conceptuales. Cree, como Morandi, que la sola presencia de las cosas habla y, como Augusto Monterroso, que en las fábulas hay moralejas sin enseñanza.

Porque ¿de qué hablan finalmente los personajes de estas fábulas sin palabras? ¿Qué podrían decirse el ratón Mickey y el Che Guevara, el bull-dog y el soldado nazi? La ficción es el medio maestro que reúne las fotografías, las películas y las instalaciones, en las que los personajes, redimidos de los usos e identidades fijas con los que los ha cargado la cultura, entablan diálogos que el que mira puede recomponer, en sintonía feliz con un mundo reconocible y próximo pero liberado de los órdenes convencionales. No faltan en las escenas las tragedias, los daños y las catástrofes, pero el paisaje de Porter es el de un mundo auspiciosamente reconciliado.

Teatro sintético de las diferencias —naturales, culturales, históricas y hasta ideológicas—, muestra sin embargo que las divergencias y los contrastes ocultan a menudo las analogías y las semejanzas, sin borrar por eso la mutua impenetrabilidad que conserva lo diverso. La banalidad y el prosaísmo de las figuras las vuelve impropias y por eso mismo inesperadamente adecuadas para el contrabando metafísico, actores fortuitos de una poética de la relación que deja ver lo uno y lo múltiple, la variedad inagotable de lo diverso preservado de la asimilación que lo disuelve, alumbrado en la red caótica de las relaciones. No parece casual que el hombrecito errante con la valija aparezca una y otra vez, y que las huellas y recorridos enlacen tiempos y espacios incomunicables. Como la propia Porter, que fue de Buenos Aires a México y después a Nueva York y ahora vuelve a Buenos Aires, trasportando su colección portátil en un pequeño container, el viajero se hace en la marcha, en las moradas transitorias, en los arraigos sucesivos o simultáneos.

Aquí y ahora. Sea. Pero ¿por qué El hombre con el hacha quiere hacer añicos el bric-à-brac que Porter ha reunido pacientemente durante años? Si lo que enfrenta con el hacha es el pasado ¿qué destruye? ¿Piensa que la memoria es un vaciadero de basura, como Funes, y quiere que lo trabaje el olvido? ¿O es Porter la que destruye? La verdadera pasión del coleccionista, dice Benjamin, es anárquica, destructiva: combina la fidelidad al objeto único con su protesta porfiada y subversiva contra lo clasificable, lo típico. Pero entonces ¿por qué destruir también sus objetos únicos?

Bien mirado, el asunto es más complejo y hace aletear el sentido. Para que el hombre del hacha destruya, Porter, en la dirección inversa del tiempo, compone pieza a pieza los pedazos, reconstruye. Cierto que no consigue devolvernos las cosas intactas como en sus dípticos mágicos, pero puede que ahora quiera revelar el truco, disponiendo los muchos añicos que también ha guardado por algún motivo. El coleccionista, por qué no, también puede atesorar restos, briznas, astillas. Pero además está la escala. ¿Cómo podría ese hombrecito minúsculo destruir un piano? Quizás Hawking encontraría aquí algún eco de las complejas teorías del caos, que buscan modelos alternativos para comprender fenómenos que escapan a la lógica conocida de las causas y los efectos, patrones de “orden desordenado” que podrían explicar por qué una alteración mínima produce un cambio exponencial imprevisible, por qué “el aleteo de una mariposa en China puede producir un huracán en Texas” más tarde.

Pero no. El tiempo de Porter es definitivamente otro, más flexible y más incierto que el de Hawking, un tiempo en el que es posible destruir y a la vez componer, optar por una alternativa sin perder las otras, oír el diálogo de un pingüino con un salero, alumbrar a un hombre con un hacha y también a un jardinero que riega sus plantas en medio del desastre. Es el ambiguo tiempo del arte, que se parece al de la esperanza y al del olvido. Como en el cuadro de Magritte, a fin de cuentas, podría decir Porter, esto no es un hombre con un hacha.

Liliana Porter

Buenos Aires, 1941. Vive en Nueva York desde 1964. Su obra está representada en numerosas colecciones públicas y privadas, entre las que se encuentran: el Museo Metropolitano, el Museo de Arte Moderno y la Biblioteca Pública de Nueva York; el Museo de Arte Latinoamericano (MALBA), El Museo de Arte Moderno y el Museo de Bellas Artes de Buenos Aires; la Fundación Daros en Zúrich; la Tate Modern en Londres; la Colección Patricia P. de Cisneros de Nueva York / Caracas; la Biblioteca Nacional de París; El Museo Reina Sofía de Madrid; el Museo Tamayo de Ciudad de México.

En 1964 co-fundó el New York Graphic Workshop. De 1991 a 2007 fue profesora en el Departamento de Arte en la Universidad de la Ciudad de Nueva York, CUNY, Queens College. Entre otras distinciones recibió la beca Guggenheim en 1980. Es Académica Correspondiente de Argentina y Académica Correspondiente de Argentina para los Estados Unidos.

It is with great enthusiasm that we present this exhibition of Liliana Porter, an artist with whom we have a longstanding and specially warm relationship. This is also her first solo exhibition at Malba, a site-specific installation created by her for the museum’s gallery 3.

Born in Buenos Aires in 1941, Porter is a key figure who has played a major role in Latin American art starting with the beginning of Conceptualism; in 1964, she moved to New York, the city where she still resides. Of Porter’s vast production, Malba’s holdings include historic and emblematic works like Wrinkle (1968) and Untitled with Books (1989), as well as more recent pieces like Red with Him II (2005) and the video Fox in the mirror (2007). Together, these works evidence different stages of Porter’s oeuvre, from the photoengravings of the late sixties— which encompass her production with the Graphic Workshop—to contemporary photography and video, as well as large-format paintings from the eighties.

After a number of conversations over the course of last year about the possibility of organizing a project together, Liliana presented the proposal that led to El hombre con el hacha y otras situaciones breves [Man with Axe and Other Brief Situations]; one feature of the project is the detailed design of the space created in conjunction with Ana Tiscornia. Instead of inviting a curator to make a selection of recent works—which, of course, would also have been of great interest—it was decided to work on the basis of Porter’s idea.

This installation not only consists of a new project by Porter, but also a new conception of the format of her three-dimensional work: the gallery space is used as the space of the work’s composition. It operates like a film set or a stage in a variety show (a topic that has interested Porter since the seventies), where different actions trigger “brief situations” in which her fantastic characters come to life. The show also features a series of collages on paper, produced in 2013. El hombre con el hacha y otras situaciones breves evidences once again this outstanding artist’s creative vitality and endless ability to reinvent fictions.

In 2003, Malba contributed to a catalogue published on the occasion of the Porter retrospective at the Centro Cultural Recoleta. On the occasion of this exhibition, Malba is not only publishing this catalogue with photographic documentation of the show and the intervention in the museum’s space, but also presenting a book recently released by the Cisneros Collection entitled Conversaciones con Inés Katzenstein [Conversations with Inés Katzenstein].

Liliana Porter’s world would certainly vex eminent time historian Stephen Hawking. In Hawking’s universe—our universe—all it takes is a cup of tea falling off a table and shattering on the floor to show that time is irreversible. According to the irrefutable laws of physics, disorder increases over time; only a trick of the film camera could reverse the sequence, put the shards back together again, and return the cup, intact, to the table. Memory, entropy, the expansion of time, which set the arrow of time on its course, leave the unbroken cup irremediably in the past and hurls the shards on the floor into the future.

In Porter’s anarchic universe, though, things work differently. Though the cup could well be the same one that Hawking observes, there are no thermodynamic principles capable of mastering her sovereign arrow of time or Murphy’s laws capable of opposing her merciful vision with the disorder of the world. A look at her incessant Reconstrucciones [Reconstructions] series suffices to show how a motley cast of small figures placed on a pedestal—a Venetian glass Mickey Mouse, a porcelain Dutch shepherdess, a ceramic penguin, or a little lamb with red bow—can exist alongside photographs of those same figures shattered to pieces, folding time into an irresolvable loop. The documentary “truth” of the photos leaves no doubt about the terrible fate awaiting Mickey, the shepherdess, the penguin, or the lamb, but the equally certain presence of the figures intact beside their portraits heals the wounds as if by magic, returning them safe and sound to the sleepy and contented life of happy figurines.

This is not the only surprise that the Porter universe would have in store for the illustrious Hawking. In another series, Trabajos forzados [Forced Labors], a tiny man with an axe hacks away at an enormous wooden board and freezes in the present the past damage wreaked by his blows, while a woman, tiny as well, sweeps, anticipating the future of an endless task, before a long trail of red dust ten times her size. In the hyperbolic undertakings that, for some reason, they engage in, the time of work is different; it is measured on another scale, one inversely proportional to the physical size of the characters. But in the many dialogues that bring Porter’s world to life, it is also possible to skip years, decades, centuries, without the help of fantastic time machines: a playmobil child can converse with the young man in Giovanni Bellini’s Portrait of a Young Man, a wooden penguin from the fifties socialize with Jesus Christ, and Che Guevara mingle with Elvis Presley and a Tibetan princess.

No one has summed up better than Porter herself the indisputable logic that, since the eighties, she has used—along with a collection of toys, souvenirs, and decorative objects arranged as she fancies in prints, paintings, photographs, small installations and films—to mock the tight chronology of history, calendars, and clocks. Anticipating the suspicion of agnostics, the artist wrote,

Could anyone actually object by saying ‘how could they possibly talk if they don’t exist?!’ Well… whom I am speaking to now? How is it possible that I am talking to you if, at this very instant when I am writing, you are not (yet) with me? Nonetheless, this conversation—and the one between the penguin and the salt shaker—exists in a time with no before and no after, a time that is measured differently.

A sort of summa of her micro-world and also—forgive the paradox—a frenzied display of old junk and broken parts, El hombre con el hacha y otras situaciones breves [Man with Axe and Other Brief Situations]—the artist’s most ambitious installation to date— formulates an even more sinuous history of time. It both summons and destroys the forced labors, reconstructions, and dialogues in the here-and-now of what, in this work, is large-scale time and space.

Forced labor par excellence, El hombre con el hacha is a sui generis retrospective of Porter’s production, the widest spectrum of her scales and, at the same time, their calculated destruction. Five white platforms hold a chaos that appears at first to be indescribable; it invites you to come closer, to circle around, to hone your vision, to try to discover the origin of the cataclysm that has eddied the wreckage, the bits of things of all sizes, the fallen chairs, and even a piano turned upside down that seems to have been spared by a miracle. Just a partial list of what is seen here would require naming thing after thing, organizing the exploration in time and space.

But in front of these white platforms everything appears at once, and though we stop to look at one thing rather than another, what is ingrained in our memory is the set, the summation that El hombre con el hacha y otras situaciones breves sees to keeping whole, safeguarding the disturbing beauty of that which cannot be arranged. How to describe it without restricting our vision as it freely wanders amidst the pieces with no set course, no narrative?

But let’s take a look. Way over there is the tiny man with the axe, a possible starting point if we heed the title, which gives that character—though just five centimeters tall—a paradoxical importance. Busy as he is, axe held high, tearing to shreds everything he comes upon, it could be said that that—shreddedness—is the fate of everything we see before us. But time could also move in the other direction: what we see could be the remains of his unflagging and somewhat frustrated attempt at devastation. The scale grows progressively from the shreds to the whole piano, though it could also shrink from those known objects fleeing the nearby the world—the chairs, the pitchers, the piano—to the miniatures and toys, inhabitants of other worlds on another scale. Stunned by the disorder, the onlooker tends to enumerate—boats, books, clocks, soldiers, cups, travelers, pieces of ceramic—or even to classify—decorative objects, souvenirs, miniature. But soon that order is proven false, and we try out another one—whole things, old things, broken things—and then another—famous and anonymous figures, real and fictional animals. But those attempts fail as well because the categories that could be used to classify such a varied set proliferate so much that in the end the only thing that connects them is the surface of the platforms, perfectly white despite the catastrophe.

There are, though, small standing figures that jump out at us. Brief scenes—“the situations” of the title, perhaps?—that stand apart, if only briefly, from the chaos like islands of other times that temper restlessness with the beginning of a story: a traveler who departures or returns,

suitcase in hand; a woman who knits tirelessly; a man who tries to untangle a rope that, to the onlooker trying to grasp what is seen, might appear to be a travel companion. There are playing cards, odd domino and Chinese-checker pieces that suggest chance—a code?—, books that plot out time in stories in another language, and mirrors that cast a sharp and discrete image, rendered more independent in the reflection. Memory, meanwhile, weaves its own webs inside and outside Porter’s world: Haven’t we seen that soldier somewhere else? And that duck over there, didn’t it sing with others just like it in a chorus of ducks? But when, where, in what world? And what are the hammer and sickle doing over there, and the Kennedys’ car on the way to martyrdom? Images that, in our world, have been repeated ad nauseum. But the piano turned upside down, that’s something we’ve never seen before.

Dizzy from so much jumping about, the onlooker finally stops trying to unravel the tangle of time and gives into aimless wandering though the landscape of ruins; in the jumble, a broken calendar finally appears and, in the middle, a bunch of clocks that no longer work. From a distance, a vague sense of melancholy tints the set, but from up close, if you let the details take you in, a duck with hair on end makes you laugh and a man no larger than the man with the axe gives a lesson in calm and stoicism: in the middle of the disaster, he is absorbed in the ridiculous task of watering plants still blossoming in the pieces of broken ceramic.

A last look makes it clear that a logic not in keeping with Hawking’s broken cup reigns in the universe of El hombre con el hacha. To understand how it is possible to come and go in time, to destroy things and put them back together, one must heed the laws that govern Porter’s microcosm, laws less indebted to science than to domestic metaphysics and applied phenomenology.

Liliana Porter likes small things. Like Baudelaire, she is fond of “the lustrous neatness, blinding flashes of color, violence in gesture and decision of contour” of toys, those artisanal doubles of the adult world that embody childhood fantasies. But she also likes decorative objects and souvenirs which, more enigmatic, are asked to miniaturize life and things in the bourgeois interior, to give fictional beings real presence, to mythify historical or popular characters, to encapsulate memories of journeys to exotic places. Like children, Porter wants to see the soul of the toy (that “infantile mania,”—Baudelaire once again—which is “a first tendency to metaphysics”), but she also wants to interrogate the muted stupefaction of decorative objects, to vanquish their inertia, to shake them out of their stupidity, and to compose for them—in dialogue with them or with their anonymous creators—a physiognomic biography. She wants to heed their mute plea that we to talk to them on their own terms, according to their features, their flaws, their character.

Only at first glance, though, are the figures just toys or decorative objects. Careful harvest of long visits to markets, airport shops, garage sales, and flea markets the world over, the objects chosen by Porter have certain traits that make them unique despite their tattered existence as copies. They often lead a double life as salt shakers, lamps, perfume sprays, nutcrackers, vases or bottle-openers, preferably from the forties or fifties. Human or animal figures with a certain look in the eye that makes them appear disconcerted when they find themselves with

others from other times, cultures, species, others with whom they, nonetheless, “dialogue.”

Porter places them in a sort of well lit and sparse set with no contextual reference beyond the ones they themselves bear. In that timeless limbo, they are invited to live with others of other species, from other times and geographies, other cultures, and even other semiotic natures (a figure can converse with another figure, or with a photo, with its reflection in the mirror, with the image on a dish, a sugar bowl, a China vase) in a sort of bare Beckettian stage, the commonplace of the heteroclite, where mere arrangement acts like language. The crude realism of the three-dimensional objects and the documentary quality of the photographs ensure the “truth” of what is happening and the viewer is asked to assume the encounter to be real and to imagine the rest.

Almost without exception, Porter makes use of copies, objects reproduced in series that have lost the aura of the unique thing. They are, therefore, ahistoric, dislocated, lost in anonymous circulation. But the art of installation reverses reproduction and provides a new aura to the things it summons. It takes the copies out of open space, composes them in a new “here and now” (this is Boris Groys’s reformulation of Benjamin’s thesis) and turns them into new originals capable of giving rise to another sort of “profane illumination.” Along with this topological reconversion is the variation in scale that works by contrast and gives other liberties.

The creator of miniature worlds confronts the disorder of his world with a new order, a reduced and manipulatable version of experience. But not even that defining principle of miniaturism— the reduced scale—organizes Porter’s collection. Hers is a world without scale that jars the gaze and animates dialogue in a sort of imaginary Esperanto.

But if the heteroclite reigns in Porter’s world, that’s also because there is no single aesthetic principle that guides the choices and casting of these mini-dialogues. Collecting small things is accompanied by a Pop inclination for common objects, clichés, and distance, and even though at first sight the use of the démodé, accumulation, theatricality, and the inappropriateness of things could give these choices a slight kitsch quality, it soon becomes clear that at stake here is another anachronism, another accumulation, another theatricality, and another way of being a thing and another thing: rather than the frenzy of cramming and the overload of emotions, these “situations” tend to selection and affective distance. Like the Surrealists, Porter trusts the eloquence of disconcerting encounters; like Joseph Cornell, she can steep a bunch of old things in mystery with very little; like Marcel Broodthaers, she can be ironic and absurd.

But Porter is more realist than the Surrealists and more minimalist and Pop than Cornell and Broodthaers. Like Warhol, she finds difference in repetition; like Lichtenstein, she seeks disaffected emotion. But she is less flat than the Pop artists and more vital than the Conceptualists. She, like Morandi, believes that the mere presence of things speaks and, like Augusto Monterroso, that fables hold morals without teaching.

What, ultimately, do the characters in these wordless fables talk about? What could the Mickey Mouse and Che Guevara, the bulldog and the Nazi soldier, have to say to each other?

Fiction is the master medium that connects the photographs, films, and installations in which the characters, freed from the uses and set identities that culture has burdened them with,

engage in dialogues that the onlooker can recompose, in happy harmony with a world recognizable and close at hand, but unfettered by conventional orders. While there is no shortage of tragedy, damage, or catastrophe in these scenes, Porter’s landscape is an auspiciously reconciled world. Synthetic theater of differences—of natural, cultural, historic, and even ideological orders—it shows that divergences and contrasts often conceal analogies and semblances, without having to do away with the mutual impenetrability that keeps difference intact. Banal and mundane, the figures appear unsuited and, for that very reason, unexpectedly right for metaphysical contraband, applied phenomenology. They are fortuitous actors in a poetics of relation that does not hide from view the one or the many, the endless variety of the diverse kept from the assimilation that would dissolve it, illuminated in the chaotic network of relations. It hardly seems by chance that the wandering little man with the suitcase appears time and again, and that the tracks and paths link incommunicable times and spaces. Like Porter herself, who went from Buenos Aires to Mexico and then to New York and now back to Buenos Aires, carrying her portable collection in a case, the traveler takes shape on the way, in the temporary dwellings, the successive or simultaneous settlements.

Here and now. So be it. But why does the man with the axe want to shatter the bric-à-brac that Porter has painstakingly collected over the course of years? If what he confronts with his axe is the past, what does he destroy? Does he, like Funes, think that memory is a garbage disposal and want forgetfulness to do its work? Or is Porter the one doing the destroying? The collector’s true passion, Benjamin says, is anarchic, destructive: it combines loyalty to the unique object with stubborn and subversive protest against the classifiable, the typical. But why, then, destroy the unique objects as well?

Upon closer look, it’s a more complicated matter, one that sets meaning aflutter. For the man with the axe to destroy, Porter, in the opposite direction of time, reconstructs, puts the pieces back together one by one. It’s true that she is not able to give us back the things intact as she does in her magic diptychs, but maybe what she wants to do now is show us her trick, arranging the many shreds that, for some reason, she has also been keeping. Who says the collector can’t also gather remains, scraps, splinters? But there is also the scale. How could that tiny man possibly destroy a piano? Hawking might find here an echo of the complex theories of chaos that look for alternative models to grasp phenomena that elude the known logic of causes and effects, patterns of “disorderly order” that might explain why a minimal alteration produces an unpredictable and exponential change, why “a butterfly flapping its wings in China can lead to a hurricane in Texas.”

But no. Porter’s time is definitely different. Hers is a more flexible, and less certain, time than Hawking’s, in which it is possible to destroy and to compose at once, to opt for one alternative without foregoing the others, to listen to a dialogue between a penguin and a salt shaker, to shed light on a man with an axe as well as a gardener watering his plants in the middle of a disaster. This is the ambiguous time of art, which is similar to that of hope and oblivion. As in Magritte’s painting, in the end, Porter could well say, this is not a man with an axe.
