E n el año 2005 este museo realizó una magna

exposición con la obra del Maestro Germán Cueto (1893-1975) para celebrar, con tan importante exhibición, el segundo aniversario del Museo Federico Silva Escultura Contemporánea.

Germán Cueto es, sin lugar a dudas, uno de los más importantes creadores mexicanos del siglo XX. En 1918 ingresó a la Academia de San Carlos, siendo Fidencio Nava su maestro más cercano, con quién desarrolló su gusto por la escultura. Germán Cueto siempre fue un creador inquieto, constante fue su búsqueda sustentada en la experimentación de materiales y formas.

Cueto ha sido considerado como el principal escultor del movimiento estridentista, una corriente vanguardista mexicana que tiene como característica la multidisciplina. Este movimiento estuvo encabezado por Manuel Maples Arce, quién reunió a artistas como: Germán List Arzubide, Ramón Alva de la Canal, Salvador Gallardo, Arqueles Vela, Luis Marín Loya, Jean Charlot, Fermín Revueltas, Leopoldo Méndez, Guillermo Ruiz, Emilio Amero, Edward Weston, Tina Modotti y Silvestre Revueltas, entre otros.

Posteriormente, Germán Cueto vivió en Europa de 1927 a 1932. En esa época, a través de su prima la artista María Blanchard, en Paris, entra en contacto con los artistas vanguardistas quienes reconocieron su talento artístico y acogieron, por ello encontramos en su obra vínculos con elementos del dadaísmo, del cubismo y del primitivismo, recurriendo, en su trabajo creativo, a una gran variedad de materiales tales como: acero, bronce, alambre y pastas, por mencionar solo algunos; para explorar temas y formas. Incursiona, también, en otras disciplinas artísticas tales como: el teatro, la danza, el diseño y el cine, que le permitieron transitar de igual manera entre lo figurativo y lo abstracto.

A mediados de 1932 regresa a México, en donde continúa con su trabajo creativo, dedicando gran parte de su tiempo al teatro, al guiñol y a la danza. En esta época Cueto intensifica su creación de máscaras al participar en varias puestas en escena.

Destacamos el Ballet “La Coronela”, estrenado en el Palacio de Bellas Artes en el año de 1940, con coreografía de Waldeen, música de Silvestre Revueltas y la destacada participación en la puesta escénica del maestro Seki Sano. Desde luego, las mascaras fueron de Germán Cueto.

Por aquellos tiempos termina su relación con Dolores Velázquez Rivas, conocida como Lola Cueto, con quien procreó dos hijas: Ana María y Mireya Cueto Velázquez e inicia una nueva relación con la potosina María Fernández Galán, quien también trabajaba la escultura y con la cuál procreó un hijo: Javier Gutiérrez-Cueto Galán. Con este enlace se consolida la cercanía afectiva de Cueto con San Luis Potosí.

Sería largo y un tanto tedioso glosar cronológicamente las actividades del Maestro Germán Cueto, baste decir, para concluir con esta breve semblanza, que en la Olimpiada México 1968 en el marco de la llamada Olimpiada Cultural realiza la escultura de gran formato “El corredor”, ubicada en las proximidades del estadio olímpico de la Ciudad Universitaria (UNAM) en la capital del país. El 14 de febrero de 1975, muere en la Ciudad de México.

Desde aquella primera exposición de la obra del Maestro Germán Cueto en nuestro museo, han pasado 16 años. Ahora, en el 2021, año en el que se cumple el primer centenario del manifiesto estridentista de Manuel Maples Arce, el Museo Federico Silva Escultura Contemporánea, expone la obra del principal escultor de esta corriente, ligado profundamente a San Luis Potosí a través de María Galán (Maruca).

Afortunadamente la obra de la exposición “Germán Cueto: Una visión vanguardista”, pertenece a dos colecciones potosinas. La primera, Fomento Cultural del Norte Potosino A.C. en cuyo caso agradecemos al presidente del patronato José Cerrillo Chowell, el apoyo que siempre ha brindado a este Museo y en este particular caso, las facilidades otorgadas para la realización de esta exposición. La otra importante colección es la de la Señora Ysabel F. Galán, comprometida siempre con las mejores causas del Museo Federico Silva y por ello, le manifestamos aquí nuestra gratitud.

En esta ocasión ofrecemos a nuestros visitantes una muestra que comprende, en primer término, esculturas, además de máscaras, pintura, piezas de alambre, dibujos y esmaltes; entregando una visión vanguardista de Germán Cueto, artista mexicano y universal.

ersátil y solvente en las artes y sus revelaciones, Germán Cueto (1893-1975) siempre privilegió a la escultura como su modo de composición esencial, desde que se lo sugiriera su maestro Fidencio Nava durante su paso por la Academia de San Carlos (Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, 1918-1919). Moderno por naturaleza, de inspiración cubofuturista, formará parte del estridentismo (1922-1925), grito ilustrado y libertario, fustigador de la tradición rural y animador de la velocidad y el maquinismo, émulo del Manifiesto Futurista de Filippo Tommaso Marinetti (1909). Vanguardista sin proponérselo, el corpus de su fábrica estética declara, urbi et orbi, que las más modestas materias primas pueden ser las más elocuentes. Y vaya que inventa personajes, tramas, máscaras-tramoyas-antifaces, paisajes imaginarios, laberintos sin escape. Juglar y titiritero confinado en el cuento de nunca acabar…

Versos del estridentista veracruzano (1900-1981) tan cercano a Germán Cueto, que forman parte del poema “Canción desde un aeroplano”, contenido en Poemas interdictos, Xalapa, Ediciones del Horizonte, 1927, p. 13.

Quedó marcada por los horrores de la Guerra Civil Española (1936-1939); se traslada a México com o refugiada o trasterrada en los barcos que facilitara el gobierno mexicano de Lázaro Cárdenas. Pionera del fotoperiodismo y cómplice creativa de Remedios Varo (1908-1963) y Leonora Carrington (1917-2011), juntas se hacían llamar “brujas” y proferían “hechizos estéticos”.

La suya es una empresa de rescate, a partir de desechos sólidos (alambre, lámina, madera, cordel y lata), un poco de yeso o barro, ocasionalmente bronce, soportes de tela, cartón o masonite, acuarela, óleo y esmalte. Instalado en la humildad de los medios, parirá una vasta obra cuyos hilos conductores son la síntesis, el humor, la perfección formal. Alejado de las tentaciones del mercado, atenderá de modo inalterable al espectador, concebido como dialogante y destinatario de la composición. Creía a pie juntillas en que: “La escultura, como toda obra de arte, debe ser: 1: auténtica creación; 2: sincera, honrada, expresión de un sentimiento o un pensamiento; 3: libre e inmune a todo estímulo puramente mercantilista”3.

Su reto consiste en comunicar eficaz y eficientemente, con pocos elementos, algunos trazos, algunas siluetas, imaginaciones de volúmenes, sólidos propensos a levitar o al menos a contorsionarse, logrando un máximo de contenidos. Las formas que aborda se asumen modernas, irreverentes y lúdicas. Amante del silencio, prefiere que sus seres de fantasía hablen por él; les concede la prelación y los transforma en sus ventrílocuos.

Sus amores más profundos y fértiles los cultivará en la danza y el teatro, con singular predilección por el guignol, ejercicios que reposan en el movimiento y el ritmo. Con sus máscaras y sus títeres, el ballet La Coronela de Silvestre Revueltas, terminado por Blas Galindo, con la participación de Seki Sano y la coreografía de Waldeen (1940) y la puesta en escena Lázaro rió de Eugene O’Neill, dirigida por Julio Bracho en el Teatro Hidalgo (1933) o de su propia creación La guerra con Ventripón, comedia satírica que denuncia el belicismo, con escenografía y vestuario de Gabriel Fernández Ledesma (1937). Queda claro que su intención reside en la expresión, en establecer las condiciones y los términos necesarios para que ocurra el diálogo, la comunicación y la activación de la conciencia.

patrias, recuérdese que su estancia parisina se extiende desde 1927 hasta 1932, con un propedéutico previo en Barcelona durante el periodo 1916-1918 tras el deceso de su padre, donde su prima Marie [Gutiérrez] Blanchard4 (1881-1932), una docena de años mayor que él, lo introducirá en la geografía de la estética moderna.

Este personaje le correrá el telón del cosmos y le convidará los secretos de los más fastuosos y delirantes viajes por la imaginación, allanándole el camino para establecer contacto con lo mejor de la intelligentsia franco-española de la época. Brillantísima compositora de imágenes en gestación que conquistará los pendones de ser la principal creadora cubista mujer, si bien asumamos que el arte como tal carece de género o, al menos, elude las trampas y simulaciones de una indemostrable identidad sexual basada en la genitalidad, será el más filantrópico de los lazarillos que hubiera podido encontrar el todavía desorientado Germán Cueto, que por alguna razón opta por el apellido materno como carta de presentación, en sintonía con su pariente.

En la medida en que este ensamblador-constructor-pepenador se apodera de sí mismo al abandonar la esclerótica Academia de San Carlos, materializará operaciones de traslación de sentido a través de sinécdoques, metáforas y alegorías, figuras que se despojan de su piel literaria para adquirir pertinencia plástica e icónica: inversión de la écfrasis (en griego, ἔκφρασιϛ, “(“descripción extendida, detallada y vívida, que permitía presentar el objeto ante los ojos”), pues será la representación visual la que describirá los conceptos con sus pasiones, sensaciones y percepciones. ¡Qué mejor ilustración que el recurso de la máscara!

Cueto clausura el ámbito de la inhibición e inaugura el gran teatro del mundo a modo de colectiva irrupción de un frenesí liberador. La máscara alivia la tensión contenida, que estalla como una risa desbordada. Su significado último lo encontramos en otro lugar; su sentido es su misterio. Cuando la cara es sólo transfiguración, la máscara es el rostro, el espejo de la interioridad5.

Se le atribuye al estrambótico Lord Byron la frase: “Y, después de todo, ¿qué es una mentira? Nada más que la verdad con máscara”. No sé a ciencia cierta si expresó dicha sentencia. Pareciera irrelevante optar por una definición que hermana a la careta con la verdad de fondo, tanto como si asociamos al antifaz con la virtud de la αλήθεια, “aquello que no está oculto, aquello que es evidente”. Lo que sí podemos aseverar es que a nuestro creador le viene bien ese anonimato que confunde al pudor permitiéndonos actuar y sentir con mayor desparpajo.

El hecho es que hacedor tan conspicuo carece de antecedentes y sin embargo “no está desenraizado”, como afirmaba en algún sitio Carlos Mérida. Lo que es totalmente cierto. Allí se asoman las formas de la lejanía indígena, pero aparecen como rasgos plásticos no como señas de identidad. No son un destino, sino uno de tantos orígenes posibles, ya que si se interrogan los objetos de Cueto surgirán atropelladamente hasta las modalidades de representación de África u Oceanía. La Torre de Babel deviene inevitable. De modo que su eventual mexicanidad trasciende el jicarismo, que les echaba en cara Xavier Villaurrutia a los devotos del nacionalismo en pintura o escultura.

Tan extraordinaria artista, discípula del postimpresionista Hermenegildo Anglada-Camarasa (1871-1959) y el fauvista Kees van Dongen (1877-1968), cuya obra cubista en nada demerita frente a la de su entrañable amigo Juan Gris, viene al mundo marcada por la deformidad propia de una cifoscoliosis con doble desviación de columna, resultado de una caída sufrida por la madre durante su embarazo al descender de un carruaje. Fantástico personaje a quien le dedicara Federico García Lorca su Elegía a María Blanchard, donde se declara “amigo de una sombra”, oración pronunciada en el Ateneo de Madrid poco después de su muerte (5 de abril de 1932). Su incorporación al grupo que polemiza contra el surrealismo lo acercará a personajes fundamentales de la época como Joaquín Torres García, quien fungirá de su auténtico cicerone en el mundo del arte, incorporándolo en todos los escenarios en los que solía participar. Por su intercesión se sumará a Cercle et Carré, movimiento artístico fundado por el propio creador uruguayo-catalán y el crítico Michel Seuphor en París en 1929, con objeto de promover la abstracción geométrica. Un año más tarde surgirá la revista del mismo nombre, de la que aparecerían sólo tres números6.

En su única exposición colectiva, celebrada en la Galería 23 de París en 1930, en la que intervinieron 43 creadores, con 130 trabajos, figuraban Hans Arp, Ferdinand Léger, Vassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Kurt Schwitters y Georges Vantongerloo. Germán Cueto es de los mejor representados en la muestra con 4 obras: 2 máscaras y 2 esculturas. Visitantes y curiosos a raudales, pero renuentes a comprar. La iniciativa cerraría el 30 de abril con una conferencia de música verbal y acompañamiento russolófono (Michel Seuphor: “Poétique Nouvelle”, publicada en Cercle et Carré, no. 3), donde el ponente se parapetaba tras una máscara fabricada para la ocasión por el artista mexicano7.

En la misma Ciudad de la luz (la Ville lumière) Cueto conoció a tres notables escultores que le marcarían a profundidad: José de Creeft (Guadalajara, España, 1884-Nueva York, 1982), Pablo Gargallo (Zaragoza, 1881- Barcelona, 1934) y Julio González (Barcelona, 1876 - París, 1942). Mayores de edad que él y sin embargo habían llegado a conclusiones muy similares desde fines de los veintes y a lo largo de los treintas, en materia de simplificación del diseño, reivindicación de materiales pobres como el hierro, por ejemplo; el carácter nuclear del movimiento, el humor y los tópicos de cotidianeidad.

Coincidían en desdeñar la solemnidad y sus afanes retóricos, esos que privilegian las virtudes y las abstracciones; mientras procuraban sintetizar los trazos abigarrados del neoclasicismo y el romanticismo en objetos apenas mostrándose en sus bordes delineados, figuras permeables, capilares, dadas a flotar.

Optarán por una abstracción progresiva o una figuración diluida, deteniéndose en los componentes de lo representado, subrayando su inestabilidad y nerviosismo, ya que las piezas tienden a moverse, incapaces de estarse quietas tamborilean dedos y manos, los pies marcan el tono y el timbre y en paralelo las facciones de las cabezas se metamorfosean, justo, en hatos de tics que confiesan no saber estarse quietos y en santa paz…

Las composiciones de German Cueto lograrán inducir la órexis deportiva (en griego ὄρεξις, “deseo”), competir y vencer, pues su contribución en bronce, El Corredor, a la Ruta de la Amistad, en el contexto de los XIX Juegos Olímpicos de 1968, será el alfa y el omega de las competencias por aludir a la maratón, última liza, la más heroica, que evoca la primera guerra médica entre el imperio persa de Darío I y las tropas helénicas comandadas por Milcíades y Arístides, cuando los griegos intuyendo su derrota, mandan un emisario de Atenas a Esparta para convocar su apoyo, que no se logra. Empero, el esfuerzo casi sobrehumano de Filípides, registrado en la crónica de Herodoto, al cumplir su encomienda, sigue siendo evocado… Tan soberbia y simple composición se erige en signo y marca del estadio universitario (1952), proyectado por Augusto Pérez Palacios, Jorge Bravo y Raúl Salinas Moro e intervenido por Diego Rivera al encargarse de la entrada principal, el pebetero y el altorrelieve La universidad, la familia y el deporte en México.

Frente a la tiranía de André Breton, señalada por su galicismo a ultranza y un tufillo de misoginia, los artistas interesados en la estética abstracta se guarecen en tres movimientos continuos: Cercle et Carré (1929), Art Concret 8 (1930) y Abstraction-Création 9 (1931-1936).

Resistencia animada por un doble motivo: comparecer como un frente cosmopolita, una fuerza internacional consciente del valor de su diversidad, y desafiar al Surrealismo a debatir en términos estéticos, filosóficos y de historia del arte. Dos exposiciones realizadas en aquella época serán decisivas para la formación de tales movimientos: ESAC (Expositors Selectes d’Art Contemporain) en el Stedelijk Museum de Amsterdan, organizada por Nelly van Doesburg en 1929 y AC: Internationell utställning av postkubistisk konst (International exhibition of post-cubist art), celebrada un año más tarde en Estocolmo, con la curaduría de Otto Gustaf Carlsund.

Theo van Doesburg publica su manifiesto con dicho nombre, dirigiendo sus baterías contra la figuración y el simbolismo. Concepción próxima a la arquitectura que enarbolaba la indiferenciación entre lo interior y lo exterior, y la necesaria desaparición del concepto mismo de “muro”. Desde 1917 a partir de la revista De stjil impulsará el neoplasticismo o constructivismo, basado en la sencillez y el equilibrio, sustentados en el lenguaje de la abstracción geométrica. Cuando introduce la línea diagonal como elemento estructural de la composición junto a los colores primarios, Piet Mondrian renunciará a formar parte de sus filas. 9 Los estatutos de la asociación fundada por Jean Hélion, Georges Vantongerloo y Auguste Herbin contemplaban, en su artículo 1’, como objetivo fundamental: “la organización en Francia y en el extranjero de exposiciones de arte no figurativo normalmente llamado Arte Abstracto, es decir, obras que no manifiesten ni la copia ni la interpretación de la naturaleza”; destacando entre sus intereses la edición de la revista Abstraction-Creation: Art non-figuratif. Los creadores agrupados en Cercle et Carré se integrarían a este movimiento; entre ellos Arp, Mondrian, Pevsner, Lissitzky, Calder, Delaunay, Brancusi y González. Cinco anuarios saldrían a la luz. Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial sus intenciones serían heredadas por el Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, promovido por Fredo Sidès.

Al regresar a México, Germán Cueto perdería muchas cosas, la más relevante: un escenario de entendimiento natural y espontáneo con los más decisivos compositores de formas, planas o en bulto, del siglo XX. Esa comunidad de diálogo desapareció para siempre; empero, la potencia de su lenguaje no se diluiría del todo, pues todavía en 1953 cuando Henry Moore realiza una estancia en nuestro país, el eminente escultor británico lo único que desea, amén de refocilarse con los monolitos mesoamericanos, es visitar el taller del más enigmático, modesto hasta la médula, fabulador de onirismos en la vigilia fabricados con pura quincallería y residuos sólidos.

De pronto recibía alguna invitación del extranjero que, atendida, solía pasar desapercibida en el mezquino e ignorante medio mexicano que ciñe su etiqueta a la inmolación propia de las guerras floridas (Xochiyaoyotl) y al característico rechazo cifrado en el ninguneo y en el “si te vi no me acuerdo”.

En su vida íntima en 1936 se separará de Lola Cueto (María Dolores Velázquez Rivas, 1897-1978), titiritera y marionetista destacada y primera mujer

en estudiar en la Academia de San Carlos, donde se conocieron en sus años mozos, si bien el divorcio se finiquita hasta 1940. En ese año fatídico en que se desató la guerra fratricida española, no se olvide que Germán Cueto ostentaba la doble nacionalidad (Certificado de nacionalidad mexicana número 191 de 30 de enero de 1947), comenzará su relación sentimental con María Fernández Galán “Maruca”, aunque los esponsales se posterguen hasta el 22 de abril de 1944.

Salvo una minoría de enterados que justiprecia sus méritos y los entiende en perspectiva internacional, el muralismo y su tríada de profetas todo lo acapara sin reparar en nadie más que ellos, Orozco, Rivera y Siqueiros, sumos sacerdotes de una religiosidad estatista cada vez menos vinculada con la realidad y la historia, que concentraban los honores y las comisiones oficiales. Cueto, incomprendido por un lado y absolutamente incapaz de hacerse oír por otro, fue reducido a la docencia, refugiándose en la cruzada libertaria del guignol político y excluido de las grandes iniciativas oficiales. Nada lo detuvo, creó un Edén.

Apenas pisó suelo patrio se da a la tarea de preparar proyectos para diversos concursos; uno de ellos consistente en levantar un monumento a la gesta armada de 1910. Sobrevive huérfana una maqueta de madera. No caló en los ánimos del jurado (1935). Y así ocurrirá a lo largo del tiempo con sus propuestas, incluyendo la del Monumento a la Madre (1948). Más tarde los hermanos Barbachano Ponce, Miguel en la dirección y Manuel en la producción, dedicarán el número 27 de su noticiero Cine Verdad (1954) al tema Escultura Moderna por Hans Beimler (fotógrafo), dedicado a Germán Cueto [Archivo Isabel Galán / Fomento Cultural del Norte Potosino, A.C.: https://youtu.be/VRqFNa3WLYk], lo que representa una auténtica joya, además de revelar la exquisita sensibilidad y cultura de sus responsables.

Su estética no encontró correlato en el México al que se reintegró en 1932, procedente de un soggiorno europeo por demás productivo. Distintas causas explican su retorno: fundamental, el deceso de su prima y patrocinadora Marie Blanchard el 5 de abril de ese año; coyuntural, el deterioro de su matrimonio con Lola Cueto que concluirá en separación y divorcio; estructural, la necesidad de intervenir en la vida política y cultural, aún efervescente, de la post-revolución. Será un exiliado en su propia tierra, como si padeciera una sentencia a la griega de ostracismo (ὀστρακισμός que viene de ὄστρακον: “cáscara de huevo” o “caparazón de tortuga”, por extensión cualquier carcaza; en este caso, un trozo de terracota con esa forma donde se asentaban esgrafiados los nombres de los expulsados de la polis, sede y cuna de la civilización).

Su nombre, fama soterrada, y fábrica de maravillas, discretas, por allí estaban.

Innecesario abundar más en una biografía donde se hermanan el talento sin límites del artista con la ignorancia o envidia social y hasta gremial del significado y trascendencia de su quehacer plástico. Hasta aquí este mínimo tributo.

La varia invención de Germán Cueto se muestra en su esplendor en la exposición que hace el Museo Federico Silva Escultura Contemporánea de una parte muy significativa de la colección de Fomento Cultural del Norte Potosino, A.C., empeño privado por salvaguardar bienes culturales de excepción. Completísima selección de piezas que se nos ofrecen cual festín visual y táctil de imposible comparación que ratifican que, algunas de las mejores y más sólidas iniciativas artísticas de nuestro país, incuban y toman la vida por asalto en San Luis Potosí.

El proyecto ganador con arquitectura de José Villagrán García y escultórica de Luis Ortiz Monasterio fue inaugurado el 10 de mayo de 1949 por el entonces presidente Miguel Alemán Valdés. Rafael Alducín Bedoya (1889-1924) desde el periódico Excélsior lanzó la convocatoria en 1922, junto con José Vasconcelos, secretario de Educación Pública, y el respaldo de la Cruz Roja y la Iglesia católica, para la celebración del “Día de las Madres”, como reacción al avance del movimiento feminista en Yucatán que, en tiempos del gobernador Felipe Carrillo Puerto (1874-1924), respaldaba el derecho de la mujer a decidir sobre su cuerpo, incluyendo el uso de preservativos y la práctica del aborto; obregonista de hueso colorado, se opuso a la rebelión delahuertista siendo apresado y fusilado por sentencia de un tribunal militar en compañía de sus hermanos Wilfrido, Edesio y Benjamín, entre otros defensores de la vida institucional.

E n 2005 el Museo Federico Silva Escultura Con-

temporánea, para celebrar su segundo aniversario, llevó a cabo la exposición Germán Cueto. La memoria como vanguardia. Ésta, por su cuenta, se unió a un ciclo de muestras individuales de escultores de la primera mitad del siglo XX que instituciones de nuestro país, como el Museo Nacional de Arte, estaban llevando a cabo en ese tiempo rescatando historiográficamente a figuras como Guillermo Ruiz, Ernesto Tamariz y otros asiduamente mencionados en libros de arte mexicano pero que no habían sido estudiados a profundidad. Fue así que, con elementos más amplios de la historia, concluimos que antes de 1950 hubiera sido impensable en territorio nacional una exposición de gran magnitud y del estilo de escultura como la de Germán Cueto (México, 1893-1975).

En las décadas que van de los veinte a los cincuenta del siglo pasado, el arte mexicano que la Revolución de 1910 impulsó y nutrió dándole temas, se distinguió tanto en escultura como en pintura por la masividad y el figurativismo, apoyándose en lenguajes descriptivos de reivindicación social que obsesionarían a los funcionarios públicos encargados de la difusión cultural. Cueto fue compañero de lucha de la gran mayoría de los artistas revolucionarios, pues quedaron los testimonios de su firma o participación con ellos en el Manifiesto del Sindicato de Obreros Técnicos, Pintores y Escultores y la Liga de Escritores y Artistas Revolucionarios (LEAR), por nombrar los más conocidos; y sin embargo, estéticamente trabajó en oposición, y no por contradecir gratuitamente a sus contemporáneos, sino por una necesidad interna que pudo plantear a manera de manifiesto personal en el guion de teatro Comedia sin solución, publicado por vez primera en 1927 en la revista Horizonte. En éste, la escenografía es un marco de ventana, las actuaciones son sólo a través de las voces de dos hombres y una mujer que se preguntan, sin salir nunca a escena, quiénes son, qué hacen y cómo llegaron ahí, en tanto que un reloj, un alarido y la sombra y la música de un organillero se escuchan como atmósfera. Tal austeridad extrema de elementos teatrales es paralelismo de la síntesis formal que hallaría Cueto en la escultura décadas después con los alambres y flejes.

En las familias paterna y materna de Germán Cueto había pintores y escritores con los que interactuó en sus años de infancia y juventud. Cultivado de manera autodidacta en el arte y la literatura, fue lector

maravillado de los clásicos españoles como Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, del que hizo una cabeza, pero asimismo un homenaje con la escultura a manera de vitral que conocemos como Hombre de vidrio, inspirada seguramente en El licenciado Vidriera. Pero no sólo comprendió el pasado, lo clásico, sino que vivió como pocos la modernidad, pues intercambió ideas con los vanguardistas mexicanos y con los que se contactó en París entre 1927 y 1932, lapso de su estancia más prolongada en Europa, y periodo en el que germinó, por fin, su obra más libre. En ese lustro fue parte de ellos, de los de avanzada internacional.

Pero desde mediados de los años veinte -ya habiendo habido reclamos de renovación en el arte de suelo patrio- Cueto se había integrado plenamente al ambiente creativo, y hasta el día de hoy nunca ha estado ausente en la museografía y los libros mexicanos y de otros países, como España, Holanda y Francia. Y no por la mera exposición de sus esculturas, sino porque es citado en estudios especializados, catálogos y notas periodísticas sobre su destacada participación en el guiñol, la danza, el teatro y el cine. Además, críticos e historiadores de arte de primer nivel, que estaban activos en su mismo tiempo y espacio, nunca lo olvidaron en sus escritos. Por el lado anecdótico, su presencia en biografías de otros intelectuales o artistas resulta sorprendente, pues fue amigo cercano de los estridentistas Germán List Arzubide y Manuel Maples Arce –Cueto es considerado un estridentista-, pero también del holandés Otto van Rees, del uruguayo Joaquín Torres-García, del madrileño Ramón Gómez de la Serna y de su prima la pintora santanderina María Blanchard, entre muchos otros. La lista de amistades de Germán Cueto puede ser muy, de verdad muy larga y de ámbitos varios, por eso en estas breves líneas recordaremos a los pintores Julio Castellanos, Ramón Alva de la Canal, Angelina Beloff, pero al mismo tiempo al escritor Ermilo Abreú Gómez y al arquitecto, escultor y teórico del arte Mathias Goeritz, el dramaturgo y cineasta Julio Bracho y el director de cine Juan Bustillo Oro, por señalar nombres al vuelo.

Mientras realizaba obra de pequeño formato, Germán Cueto trabajó obra pública que se integró a los diseños de notables arquitectos, como Carlos Obregón Santacilia, Mario Pani y el ya mencionado Goeritz. Acotaremos que Cueto, desde épocas muy tempranas, se dedicó a la docencia en aulas de secundaria y del Mexico City College, La Esmeralda y la Escue-

la de Artesanías de la Ciudadela, formando nuevos escultores como Ángela Gurría, Helen Escobedo y Jorge Dubón, que fueron algunos de sus alumnos y que renovaron a su vez el arte nacional. Con éstos, que eran parte de las nacientes generaciones de artistas que empezaron a destacar en las décadas de los cincuenta y sesenta, cambian las formas de hacer y concebir la escultura, lo que favoreció a un mejor entendimiento de la obra de Germán Cueto.

Otra lección que aprendimos con la exposición de 2005 fue que, vida y obra de nuestro escultor, eran conocidas muy parcialmente por los actuales investigadores y, por tanto, por el público en general. Desde su muerte en 1975 y su primera gran exposición individual póstuma, promovida por su viuda doña María Fernández Galán, que se celebró en 1981 en el Museo de Arte Moderno de Chapultepec, su obra se consagró como cita obligada para explicar el arte moderno pero, paradójicamente, el conocimiento de la totalidad de la misma pasó a un olvido injusto, quedando registros y recuerdos que parecieron después importarle solo a unos pocos que, sin interés en el mercantilismo, hicieron esfuerzos para preservarlos. Y así, sin dolo, empezamos a usar retórica para interpretar lo que desconocíamos y a repetir lugares comunes tergiversados sobre su biografía, contexto y producción.

A diez y seis años de esa exposición memorable, por la tenacidad de varios coleccionistas y estudiosos de Germán Cueto, entre los que debemos mencionar, especialment, al empresario minero José Cerrillo Chowell y a doña Ysabel Galán, y gracias a la agilidad que nos ofrece hoy día la tecnología digital, actualmente podemos observar conjuntos más amplios de su obra y, por tanto, hemos acrecentado nuestro conocimiento e incluso precisado mejor nuestras dudas sobre la trayectoria de uno de los escultores más propositivos de nuestro país.

Los estudios más recientes sobre Germán Cueto nos lo reafirman como gran escultor en piedra, cerámica y bronce, pero simultáneamente como experimentador de materiales poco ortodoxos para crear unidades expresivas, como papel maché, láminas de diversos metales dobladas y recortadas, alambres, flejes, cemento, botones de plástico, vidrios de ventanillas de avión o trabajos de herrería. Finalmente, hoy reconocemos que dedicó buena parte de su reflexión a crear obra bidimensional, como dibujos y tintas, esmaltes sobre lámina, pinturas en tela o papel, que se caracterizan por ser complejas composiciones de planos, ten-

siones y distensiones, y descubrimos en éstas a Cueto como sobrio y delicado colorista. Podríamos solo de esto desprender que se trató de un conocedor profundo de la escultura, a la que conscientemente llevó a romper los límites de la tridimensionalidad hasta proponer una línea envolvente en el espacio para definir un volumen dinámico al usar líneas aéreas y darle al vacío un peso específico.

La doctora Teresa del Conde, la maestra Raquel Tibol, pero antes Jorge Juan Crespo de la Serna, Margarita Nelken y Xavier Moyssén, entre una pléyade de críticos de arte, observando desde enfoques particulares, coincidieron que destacan de la escultura de Cueto dos temas: la cabeza y los rostros, que tendrían que ver con la exploración del individuo y su singularidad, con el individuo y su ausencia, con el individuo y su multiplicidad. Al respecto de clisés, por etiquetarlo siempre como “escultor abstracto”, una ceguera no nos permitió durante muchos años percatarnos de que fue prolífico retratista –por justicia debo decir que sí lo notó su contemporáneo, el pintor muralista y escritor de arte, Fernando Leal en un perdido artículo de El Nacional-. Así fue como dejó a la posteridad numerosas efigies de los estridentistas, de sus compañeros en Europa, de los guiñoleros y de familiares y amigos que se encuentran algunas perdidas y otras en distintas colecciones. Sumemos a lo anterior los trabajos hechos por solicitud, por ejemplo las cabezas de filósofos y escritores del pasado que, por encargo de José Vasconcelos, produjo para la Biblioteca de México en la Ciudadela en 1946.

Con el mismo tema de las cabezas y las caras, pero en un sentido opuesto de su producción, están las obras sin un referente concreto, de múltiples gestos y variados perfiles en los que en pocas ocasiones podemos desprender asuntos emocionales como tristeza o alegría, lo que se encuentra en ellas es una búsqueda del límite, es decir, el escultor buscó que una cara dejara de serlo pero aunque abstrayéndola descubrir a partir de un punto de observación específico sus rasgos mínimos inconfundibles: ojos, nariz, boca.

Por esto último, observamos una inteligencia creativa que incansablemente exploró lo formal tanto en composición como en el uso de materiales.

Cueto en los treinta participó con el grupo Cercle et Carré en París, ahí su encuentro con Joaquín Torres-García y Michel Seuphor lo nutrieron de un humanismo donde la geometría era la materia reflexiva que lo llevaría a varios hallazgos personales en su pro-

ducción, quizás el más importante fue que la escultura debía ser, en su esencia, dinámica y que el volumen puede dibujarse en el aire con una línea sutil: penetrabilidad y movimiento, luces y sombras, contornos, pero indiscutiblemente filosofando sobre el volumen y las texturas, sobre el espacio y la manera de aprisionarlo y desenvolverse en él.

En el pasado, en México fue aceptado a medias y no del todo comprendido, específicamente porque los administradores de la cultura estaban preocupados por promover expresiones que internacionalmente proyectaran a un país que –en la superficie- dejaba de ser bárbaro y cruento, necesitaban discursos útiles, descriptivos, fáciles de entender, y eso no lo tenía Cueto, entregado íntegramente a la inteligencia, que es la sustancia del arte, y no allegado a los discursos de la política. Es por esa gran cultura que nutre la obra de Germán Cueto y que nunca sometió a intereses efímeros, por lo que resultará siempre fascinante e intrépida en libertades.

El Museo Federico Silva Escultura Contemporánea ha vuelto a acometer la empresa de exhibir una selecta exposición de Germán Cueto en un momento en el que nuestro conocimiento sobre él es más claro y preciso, aunque no total. Esta exposición resultará muy útil porque vemos dos objetivos: el primero, que la vocación de este museo se consolida al presentar al artista mexicano que a contracorriente hizo innovaciones en la forma y en la materia escultóricas; y en segundo lugar permitirá que nuevas generaciones empiecen a familiarizarse con una obra de arte generosa, que da como resultado preocupaciones humanas que tratan de explicar al ser… ¿cómo siendo tan similares podemos ser tan distintos?, ¿qué escondemos en nuestra individualidad?, ¿qué en la multitud?, ¿cuál es el costo existencial de la libertad?

ermán Cueto pareciera ser una figura anómala dentro del panorama artístico mexicano, una figura que se disuelve conforme nos acercamos a ella.

Aunque ligado en sus inicios al estallido del movimiento estridentista, en los tempranos años veinte, cuando participa en las tertulias del Café de Nadie, así como las posiciones combativas del Sindicato de Obreros, Pintores y Escultores que encabezaba David Alfaro Siqueiros, cuyo manifiesto suscribe, al lado de colegas como Fermín Revueltas, José Clemente Orozco, Xavier Guerrero y Carlos Mérida, su figura se afantasma muy pronto hasta casi desaparecer. De cierto modo, podría decirse que Cueto es el menos estridentista de los estridentistas, no porque sus propuestas de los años veinte carezcan de radicalidad, eso esta fuera de toda discusión, sino por su talante silencioso, ajeno al alboroto y al estrépito del que hacían gala muchos de sus compañeros de la vanguardia. Su firma al calce del manifiesto proletario que habría redactado Siqueiros en contra de la rebelión delahuertista (y en apoyo evidente del gobierno del Gral. Álvaro Obregón), que apareciera publicado en El Machete (1924), órgano del Partido Comunista, carece hasta donde se sabe de la estela de la continuidad: no es posible seguirle el rastro, encontrarle secuelas. En el México vociferante de los años veinte, Cueto es un ejemplo de parsimonia, tanto en el terreno artístico como en el político. Hay algo de beckettiano en el personaje, me gustaría anticipar, un aspecto refractario (también podría decirse: neutro) que lo aleja de toda militancia y lo condena al mutismo y la soledad. El “aire de familia” con Samuel Beckett – por cierto, la tentación por el alto vacío, por el enrarecimiento de la presencia humana, así como el gusto por la sustracción y por la inmaterialidad, que llegan a advertirse en muchas de sus esculturas y obras pictóricas, sobre todo de su última época -, se confirma de modo sorprendente con la lectura de su Comedia sin solución, una breve obra dramática que pone en escena a tres personajes estáticos, que carecen de nombre, que están cubiertos de modo permanente por la oscuridad y a los que nunca alcanza a vérseles la cara, que le publica su amigo Germán List Arzubide en la revista Horizonte en 1927. Después de unos parlamentos erráticos

y exasperantes, en los que domina el malentendido, esto es, la imposibilidad de la comunicación, por fin se hace la luz pero esta luz es como una radiación destructora, que arrasa con toda sombra de presencia humana, e incluso, objetal. Sobre el escenario lo único que permanece es el resplandor de una luz cegadora, que ha barrido con todo. ¡Extraña exaltación de la nada!

Empero, cuando este texto que se adelanta a lo que años después se conocería como “teatro absurdo” aparece publicado, igual que como sucede con los personajes de su comedia, Cueto ya ha desaparecido del escenario mexicano. Acompañado de Lola Cueto, su primera esposa, se ha trasladado al viejo continente, donde permanecerá de mediados de 1927 a 1932.

El joven Cueto, por cierto, ya había estado antes en Europa. Atosigada por las dificultades económicas que trae consigo el movimiento revolucionario, agravadas además por la muerte del padre, su familia decide enviarlo a España en 1916. Allá entra en contacto con su prima, la excelente pintora vanguardista, María Blanchard. Supongo que este contacto precoz tiene un significado vocacional, pues al regresar a México en 1918, Cueto resuelve convertirse en escultor e ingresa a la Academia de Bellas Artes. ¿Cómo se liga a los estridentistas? Este vínculo tendría que ser importante pues define lo que se puede llamar su primera etapa como artista de la vanguardia, que comprende los años de 1923 a 1926. En su libro de memorias, Soberana juventud, Manuel Maples Arce recuerda: “La casa de los Cueto estaba siempre abierta a la amistad. A todas horas del día discurríamos por allí, seguros de encontrar a alguien con quien cambiar impresiones sobre temas de nuestro fervor.

En general, la casa producía la impresión de un taller, pues Germán, en un cobertizo, modelaba el barro, batía la lámina o preparaba pastas con las que hacía máscaras que recordaban el carnaval de nuestra niñez, salpicando y percudiendo todo lo que estaba a su alcance…”1 Aunque la evocación es cordial, es de lamentarse que Maples no proporcione mayor información acerca de la participación de Cueto en

el estridentismo. Agreguemos, a la penuria de los signos, la ausencia de Cueto en las páginas de la revista Irradiador (tres números: septiembre, octubre y noviembre de 1923). Concebida como un “proyector internacional de nueva estética”, la revista dirigida por el propio Maples y por Fermín Revueltas divulgó trabajos de Diego Rivera, de Jean Charlot, de Leopoldo Méndez, del caricaturista Hugo Tilghmann, e incluso una fotografía de Edward Weston, pero no hay huella de la presencia de Cueto.

La irrupción documentable de Cueto dentro del estridentismo se remonta a la famosa “tardeada estridentista” que tuvo lugar en el Café de Nadie el sábado 12 de abril de 1924. Según las invitaciones impresas que circularon, el acto comprendería la lectura de “La historia del Café de Nadie”, a cargo de Arqueles Vela, así como recitación de poemas de Maples Arce, Germán List Arzubide, Salvador Gallardo, Luis Ordaz Rocha, Miguel Aguillón Guzmán y del poeta ultraísta español Humberto Rivas, avecinado en ese tiempo entre nosotros. Además de “música estridentista” (¿sería válido conjeturar alguna intervención de Silvestre Revueltas?), en el terreno de las artes plásticas se anunciaba una exposición de pintura de Fermín Revueltas, Leopoldo Méndez, Jean Charlot y Xavier González… así como máscaras (en un renglón aparte) de Germán Cueto.

publicara en el Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes en 1970. El fallo de Schneider, a quien tanto debe la historia del estridentismo, consiste en no haber intentado la identificación de los concurrentes, por lo que se limita a anotar al pue de la fotografía: “Reunión en El Café de Nadie”. Ahora es posible agregar, además de la fecha precisa en la que ésta fue tomada, los nombres de algunos de los personajes que ahí quedaron tatuados para la prosperidad. La presencia de Villaurrutia, prominente miembro del grupo de los Contemporáneos, eterno rival -como se sabe- de los estridentistas, puede sorprender a cualquiera, pero estoy seguro que no me equivoco en su identificación. No se olvide que más allá o más acá de las diferencias, que por supuesto existían, y que el paso del tiempo se encargará de magnificar, los estridentistas y los miembros del llamado “grupo sin grupo” pertenecían a la misma honrada generacional, lo cual sugiere por sí solo que tenía que haber más de una afinidad estética entre ellos. Volveré a este punto más adelante.

La revista El Universal ilustrado en su numero 362, del 17 de abril de 1924, da testimonio del acto con la publicación del texto antes mencionado de Arqueles Vela, al que acompañan varias fotografías representativas del acontecimiento. Al lado de las pinturas, en la parte superior, ya cerca del techo, se distinguen cuando menos tres de las máscaras elaboradas por Cueto, entre ellas quizás la mas famosa, la que realizara de su tocayo el poeta, narrador e historiador del movimiento, Germán List Arzubide.

Un número un poco anterior de El Universal ilustrado (el 340, correspondiente al 15 de noviembre de 1923) contenía ya una mención explícita a las máscaras de Germán Cueto. Puedo pensar, aunque reconozco que es una mera hipótesis, que ésta es la primera descripción del trabajo de Cueto en la prensa nacional. Se trata de una breve nota que firma Silvestre Paradox (pseudónimo de Arqueles Vela), que en su parte medular asienta: “Germán Cueto, el escultor de lo nuevo, está descolgando de la figura de los estridentistas la actitud más peculiar (…) El primero que se ha estatizado con su actitud desgarbada de sábado de gloria, con su enorme risa congelada, con su enorme risa de la edad de piedra, trituradora de todas lágrimas, ha sido Germán List Arzubide.

Cueto ha logrado escalpelear, con una artera superchería de clínica, la risa de List Arzubide.”

En otra de ellas se distingue una variada concurrencia, y en una más, sentados en torno a una mesa, destaca la presencia de algunos personajes entre los que puede identificarse de manera inequívoca a Maples Arce, a List Arzubide, a Salvador Gallardo, al propio Germán Cueto y, colocado inmediatamente después, a su derecha, al poeta Xavier Villaurrutia.

Por cierto, no es estrictamente indispensable recurrir a los viejos ejemplares de El Universal ilustrado para conocer esta foto, que Luis Mario Schneider incluyó en la sección final de su documentado libro El estridentismo. Una literatura de la estrategia que

Cueto aparece aquí como el cirujano de la risa primitiva del vanguardista List, a quien disecciona con su escalpelo, pero igualmente se da a entender que él mismo es un artista de la vanguardia. El escultor de lo nuevo, lo llama el articulista. ¿En qué podría consistir la novedad de su propuesta? Me apresuro a contestar: en los materiales no solo convencionales sino “desechables”. Cartón, papel maché… yeso. Es un artista de la pobreza que trabaja con materiales fungibles. Algo anticipa con su actitud irreverente a lo que en décadas posteriores se conocerá como “arte povera”. Desde sus inicios mismos, Cueto muestra

una postura que lo acompañará toda la vida, y que sin duda lo distingue: el de un experimentador con los materiales. Por otro lado, el contenido de su propuesta no podía ser más innovador, pues lo que Cueto consigue es la autonomía estética de la máscara.

Inventa un género que existía de manera larvada, pero sujeto siempre a su función utilitaria o ceremonial. Las máscaras de los rituales indígenas, con un evidente valor etnográfico, las máscaras teatrales, lo mismo que las máscaras festivas que se utilizan en el carnaval -como bien recuerda Maples Arce- se desprenden de su función representativa y comunitaria, abandonan el “servicio social”, por decirlo así, y se convierten en objetos de contemplación estética. Depurada de su historia dramática y de su utilitarismo, la máscara se torna un objeto semiótico independiente, que se ha ganado el derecho a existir como cosa o como signo en sí.

Sin demérito de la autonomía conseguida, habría que señalar la aparición de dos vertientes que se distinguen con claridad en el trabajo innovador de Cueto: 1) La máscara mimética, que “representa” el rostro de algún personaje conocido; sirvan como ejemplo las máscaras de List Arzubide, del filósofo Samuel Ramos, incluso, la de Hitler … 2) La máscara desprovista de valor representativo, y que podríamos llamar “creacionista”, que se nos propone como una pura invención forma, por la que se recurre al libre juego con la línea, la curva y la disposición colorística. A esta clasificación puede sobreponerse otra, no necesariamente simétrica: 3) la de la máscara protuberante, primitiva, saturada de consistencia, excesiva en su grosera materialidad, oscilante siempre entre lo grotesco y lo arcaico, que contrasta con 4) la máscara geometrista, “aerodinámica”, si se le

puede llamar así, que economiza las líneas formativas y busca una depuración que se consigue poniendo en juego los mínimos elementos. Hay en esta ultima vertiente una tendencia abstraccionista, siempre que se entienda el término en su original sentido etimológico, como el acto elemental de abstraer, separar, alejar, depurar, desmaterializar. Es el sentido, por cierto, al que parece adscribirse Arqueles Vela cuando en su ensayo “El estridentismo y la teoría abstraccionista”, hace un llamado a los jóvenes creadores a hacer “un arte puro y sin repujaciones”. (Repujar: labrar en relieve, en cuero o chapa). Un arte “sin perspectivas pictóricas. Sin anecdotismo, Una poesía sincera, son ordenar la emoción que siempre es desordenada”. Si César Vallejo había exclamado, en uno de sus poemas de Trilce: “Absurdo, solo tu eres puro!”, Arqueles Vela continuará: “Lo real y natural en la vida es lo absurdo. Lo inconexo, Nadie siente ni piensa con una perfecta consitnuidad.”2 La segunda irrupción de Cueto dentro del estridentismo tiene lugar a principios de 1926, cuando presenta su primera exposición individual en El Café de Nadie, que para esas alturas agonizaba y estaba a punto de cerrar sus puertas.3 61 Aunque no he encontrado testimonios específicos acerca de esta exposición, un interesante articulo de Xavier Villaurrutia titulado “Estética de la máscara” puede ser traído a colación. Aclaro que este ensayo, que se encuentra en las Obras del autor, fue incluido originalmente en una monografía de Roberto Montenegro titulada Máscaras mexicanas, aunque también se publicó en El Universal ilustrado el 4 de marzo de 1926, una fecha extrañamente próxima a aquella en que se habría inaugurado la exposición de Cueto.4

Al final del artículo que se publica en El Universal ilustrado, y después de la firma del autor, aparece una breve nota que omiten las Obras de Villaurrutia, y que a la letra deja leer: “La colección de máscaras que el pintor Roberto Montenegro presenta y ordena en esta monografía sin precedentes en nuestras manifestaciones y estudios de arte, incitó este camino estético. -CV.” Esta aclaración no pedida, este candado o seguro adicional, evidentemente sobredeterminado, como podría observar Freud, termina sugiriendo de algún modo lo que en principio intenta negar. ¿Cómo reprimir, en efecto, la referencia a Cueto, que en esos días acaba de tener una exposición, y que ha descubierto (pero también propuesto) primero que nadie en nuestro país el valor autónomo de la máscara como signo estético?

El artículo de Villaurrutia, como era de esperarse, está ilustrado con reproducciones fotográficas de las máscaras que selecciona Montenegro, todas ellas máscaras festivas o rituales pertenecientes a diversas etnias de la cultura mexicana. Esto aseguraría de principio que las observaciones de Villaurrutua no se refieren para nada al trabajo de Cueto. Y sin embargo… Hay un aire en el texto de Villaurrutia que parece apuntar hacia otro lugar, justamente el lugar de la autonomía estética. Aunque comienza su texto afirmando, a manera de un axioma, que “la realidad de la máscara es el rostro”, como estableciendo de entrada una identidad irrompible entre estos dos elementos, pronto se advierte que Villaurrutia ve en la mascara un acontecimiento que se aleja progresivamente de los rastros del rostro, anulando de esta manera la ecuación inicial. Como todo vanguardista que se respeta, Villaurrutia apuesta siempre a favor del objeto estético como un objeto depurado, que resplandece por si mismo, distanciado ya para siempre de toda función utilitarista. Escribe Villaurrutia: “Antigua como la palabra, tan semejante a ella en cuanto pretende fiijar en estrecho y definitivo gesto la expresión de una realidad significativa; en cuanto se le destina a la vez que a mostrar algo, a oculta algo también, es como ella un a modo de puente tendido hacia un reino puro. La realidad no cede su porción, y el puente no cae para quedar de la otra parte sino cuando la máscara se basta a si misma, libre y sola, sin memoria de su origen.” (Los subrayados son míos.)

En una frase relampagueante, Villaurrutia resume: “La fuga del rostro hacia la máscara es un síntoma de pura sangre estética”. Muchos años después, el critico de arte Paul Westheim, también acicateado por su formación vanguardista, escribirá de manera un tanto similar: “La máscara es expresión de la personalidad suprarreal del hombre.”5 Como quiera que se lo vea, la fórmula de Villaurrutia es más radical que la de Westheim, en tanto que implica un cierto sesgo deshumanizado. El hombre se escapa del hombre gracias a ese impulso estético que brota en la flor insólita o delirante de la máscara. Se borra de tal suerte en rostro para que aparezca otra cosa muy diferente y singular, un objeto puro, que reforma los rasgos antropocéntricos, y que se desprende de manera definitiva de las operaciones dramáticas, arquitectónicas y carnavalescas que aprisionaban su significación.

Villaurrutia describe de este modo el moderno advenimiento de la autonomía estética de la máscara, que por supuesto no lo deja impasible: “Muerta u olvidada la función práctica -la aventura y el carnaval-, ahogada en la corriente moderna la significación simbolizante del rito, y desdeñada por los actores, la máscara adquiere su justa significación estética. Imposible, entonces, incluirla en los dominios de la pintura o de la escultura. Si de ambas participa, en ninguna puede inscribirse.”

Basta un momento de reflexión para advertir que estas afirmaciones no pueden aplicarse a la letra a las máscaras rituales que colecciona Montenegro. Villaurrutia da testimonio del surgimiento de un nuevo objeto semiótico, que antes no existía, que se encuentra a medio camino entre la pintura y la escultura, que participa de ambas disciplinas pero que tampoco puede reducirse a ninguna de ellas. Co,o si practicara la doble visión en sincronía perfecta, Villaurrutia parece tener un ojo en el gato de la tradición (las máscaras históricas, tribales, de Montenegro) y otro en el garabato de la vanguardia (las máscaras “creacionistas” y autosuficientes de Cueto). Se adivina, en todo esto, el alborozo del descubrimiento.6 La invención de un género, en lo que tiene de autentico, estimo, no podía pasar inadvertida para el critico de arte que había en Villaurrutia.

Los polvos de estos lodos, empero, no tienen mayor resonancia en Cueto, quien sale de México e inicia una estancia europea (1927 – 1932) que lo marcará para siempre.

Atendiendo acaso a una invitación de su prima Maria Blanchard, cueto se traslada en compañía de su joven esposa Dolores Cueto a la ciudad de París, en donde entra en contacto con Joaquín Torres-García y otros prominentes artistas que habrán de formar parte del grupo Cercle et Carré, a cuyas actividades se incorpora. En las exposiciones que organiza Torres-García, coincide la crema y la nata de la vanguardia europea.

64 Figuran en ellas, entre otros, los nombres de Hans Arp, Fernand Léger, Piet Mondrian, Vassily Kandinsky y Kurt Schwitters, como lo documenta Serge -Fauchereay en el libro que publicó recientemente en el Museo Nacional del Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, de España.7 Cueto participa con diversas obras en estas exposiciones así como en la del Salón des Surindépendants de 1931. El trabajo con lámina y con metales, la piedra policromada, los arabescos con alambre, el bronce sólido o adelgazado, la cerámica y los esmaltes. Las cuentas de cristal (chaquira), el cemento, la madera, el yeso, la pasta de papel, el siporex, estos son algunos de los materiales en los que se diversificará el trabajo creativo de Cueto.

Sin abandonar nunca del todo el modelo inicial de la máscara. Al que retorna de manera esporádica en diversas etapas de su vida, Cueto explora con fruición otras posibilidades de la escultura, el dibujo y la pintura. Cuando menos las que están a su alcance. La economía singular de un Léger y un Brancusi, la simplificación poética de un Calder, un sentido de lo gótico que alcanza a mezclarse con una fuerte tendencia semiabstracta, el impulso a la simplificación geometrista, que conserva solo las líneas esenciales, otorgan a su trabajo plástico a partir de los años treinta una impronta inconfundible.

Poco importa que este descubrimiento se haya quedado sin continuadores. Las máscaras de Cueto quedan como un objeto aislado, solitario, sin descendencia posible. Como una “significativa isla de arte”, si puedo rescatar las palabras con las que concluye su artículo Villaurrutia. No está por demás recordar, tratando de comprender el valor subliminal de la frase, que los Contemporáneos se calificaban a sí mismos como “un archipiélago de soledades”.

En 1932, a la muerte de la pintora Blanchard, Cueto y su esposa deciden regresar al país.8 Los politizados años treinta marcan en México una etapa de activismo izquierdizante en el que difícilmente encaja el arte depurado de cueto. El “maximato” de Plutarco Elías Calles, al que sigue el ascenso al poder de Lázaro Cárdenas y el consiguiente protagonismo de la LEAR (Liga de Escritores y Artistas Revolucionarios), que goza de modo pleno del apoyo oficial, configuran un escenario altisonante y crispado (y en algunos casos oportunista) en el que la figura escueta y parsimoniosa de Cueto de alguna manera está condenada al anonimato o a la marginación. La orientación vanguardista que la Revolución solicita, ávida de imágenes dominadas por la presencia de las masas tanto “obreristas” como “agarristas”, en tanto sujeto emergente de la historia de la lucha de clases, resulta de algún modo refractaria, cuando no hostil, para esas geometrías en suspenso, que deshagan sus planos en el alto vacío, que propone Cueto en su fallida reinserción a la cultura mexicana. Fauchereau resume en los siguientes términos el destino (inevitable) del artista, en su retorno al país natal: “Como no puede pretender un lugar de primer orden en el mundo artístico mexicano, pues no acepta el realismo reinante, y a pesar de su adhesión entusiasta a los principios de la revolución, Cueto se dedica al teatro y al guiñol en compañía de Lola y de su amigo List Arzubide.”

Revolucionario dentro de la revolución, Cueto participa, cierto que de manera frustrada, en el concurso que lanza el Gral. Cárdenas solicitando proyectos para lo que habría de ser el Monumento de la Revolución. La maqueta de Cueto es interesante por su propuesta maquínica y deshumanizada. Su interpretación del Gran Acontecimiento, esto es evidente, no encaja para nada en la retorica oficial de la época: ni bayonetas caladas, ni carabinas 30-30, ni torsos

de los campesinos alzados en armas o de los obreros estallando la necesaria huelga que conduce a la emancipación. En lugar de los rostros encendidos, o de las líneas representativas del conglomerado social, sólido cimiento de una nueva democracia, Cueto dispone una construcción abstracta que remeda de algún modo la fría estructura de un motor o de un generador de electricidad. Quizás resonaba en su cerebro la estentórea definición de Lenin: “El socialismo es el poder soviético más la electrificación”.

Se adivinan las placas metálicas, el movimiento vertiginoso de la bobina, el dinamismo incalculable de la energía liberada por la Revolución, que se corona con una rueda en la parte superior que simboliza, acaso, espero no incurrir en el ditirambo, el fluir indetenible del progreso técnico e industrial… pero todo dentro de un contexto desolado, en el que la presencia humana brilla espantosamente por su ausencia.

También las vanguardias artísticas, a partir del futurismo, exaltaron la maquina como forma suprema de la belleza de la época. Lo mismo Einstein que Walter Benjamin, por ejemplo, se dejan deslumbrar por el automatismo de la maquina productora, que abarca desde el tractor que facilita las labores agrícolas y el extractor mecánico de leche en los establos, hasta la cadena de producción en serie dentro de una fabrica de hilados y tejidos. Incluso un artista tan radical como Marcel Duchamp, que abiertamente renegaba no sólo de lo que él llamaba “pintura retiniana”, sino de la actitud estética en general, pareció siempre fascinado por la magia del movimiento mecánico, como lo muestra su primer ready-made, una rueda de bicicleta, y como lo confirma su Gran vidrio, que representa una suerte de asedio erótico de una novia en el que los personajes deseantes han sido desplazados por objetos mecánicos que remedan turbinas y condensadores de alta

Pocos días después del deceso de la pintora de vanguardia, Federico García Lorca se refirió en el Ateneo de Madrid en los siguientes términos a su figura, contrastándola con la cenalidad y el servilismo de que haría gala el pintor comunista Diego Rivera: “Diego Rivera el pintor mejicano, verdadera antítesis de María, artista sensual que ahora, mientras ella sube al cielo, él pinta de oro y besa el ombligo terrible de Plutarco Elías Calles.” Debo el dato al libro de Raquel Tibol, Diversidades en el arte del siglo XX. tensión. No es del todo extraño, en este contexto, que Cueto se despoje de toda reminiscencia humana y vea en una suerte de generador eléctrico el verdadero destino de la humanidad liberada, y en la verdadera imagen, por ende, de esa madre sangrienta (pero ahora sublimizada) que fue la Revolución.

Los vínculos con los estridentistas, o mejor dicho, con lo que resta del estridentismo, que para estos años ha pasado a mejor vida, se reanudan en esta etapa de su labor creadora, y persisten varios años después. De finales de los años cuarenta es Planos, una audaz obra geometrista, a la vez que eminentemente abstracta en la medida en que no representa ninguna realidad humana reconocible, sino que consiste en una composición de planos geométricos que forman en el fondo una especie de frustrada cinta de Moebius, a la que sobreponen dos columnas romboidales que flotan en el espacio, a la manera de un sí y un no que quedan indeterminados, levemente inclinados de modo que pareciera que se acercan o se alejan de la perspectiva del espectador. Se sabe que esa composición de Cueto se inspira en un poema sinfónico del mismo nombre del compositor Silvestre Revueltas, otro viejo conocido, junto con su hermano Fermín Revueltas, de los años felices del estridentismo. Si en otros momentos Revueltas aparece como un compositor mexicanista, que retoma (pese a lo avanzado de su lenguaje armónico) elementos vinculados con el color local (por ejemplo, en La noche de los mayas, o en Janitzio), en Planos asistimos a una de las partituras mas depuradas, y mas abstractas, como he reconocido la crítica, del compositor9. No está de más recordar que en sus arranques mismos, el movimiento estridentista se concebía a sí mismo como un movimiento “cosmopolita”, de inspiración eminentemente internacional, y que se colocaba por ello mismo muy por encima de los reflejos abstrusos del nacionalismo ramplón (de aquí una de las consignas del Manifiesto estridentista de Maples: “¡Muera el cura Hidalgo!”).10 66 Con Planos (1948), y otras diversas obras del mismo periodo, como el óleo titulado Abstracción (1945), o el dibujo llamado Cabeza abstracta (1941), Cueto se proyecta como el primero de los artistas plásticos mexicanos que incursiona en los terrenos de la abstracción, en el sentido riguroso y preciso que esta palabra tiene en el arte de nuestros días.

Se adelanta de manera significativa por unos pocos años, me parece, al trabajo de otro gran pintor avecindado entre nosotros: Carlos Mérida. Aunque proviene de una fuente radicalmente distinta, Cueto es del mismo modo el antecedente obligado que preara el surgimiento de la obra eminentemente abstracta de Lilia Carrillo en los años sesenta y del trabajo escultórico de Ángela Gurría en esos mismos años.

Quizás el ansia clasificatoria (que es también, y de modo inevitable, simplificadora) ha sido responsable del escueto lugar que ocupa Cueto dentro de la historia del arte mexicano. Muy pronto se le cuelga el cartabón de escultor, o de escultor en su vertiente de

“mascarero”… con lo que permanecen fuera de foto los intereses polimorfos de un artista que se prodiga en muy diversas direcciones, todas ellas arriesgadas e innovadoras dentro de su contexto. La pintura, los pasteles, los dibujos, los trabajos colorísticos en esmalte, sus propuestas con el cobre o con la chapa metálica, sus volátiles figuras elaboradas con alambre… su tenaz y a la vez juguetona experimentación con todo tipo de materiales. Una mirada atenta a la obra de Cueto obliga a reconocer una variedad de registros que rebasan todo intento de clasificación. Ya no se le puede despachar de un banderazo, como ha sido hasta ahora la costumbre. La dimensión lúdica, polimorfa y multi direccional de sus propuestas solo puede aquilatarse cuando se piensa en lo que hicieron en otros momentos algunos de sus estrictos contemporáneos, entre quienes habría a que contar a vanguardistas de la talla de Vladimir Tatlin y László Moholy-Nagy, lo cual obliga a tomar en cuenta, en un sentido más general como referencias indispensables, lo mismo las propuestas del constructivismo soviético que las de la Bauhaus.

Señalo estos dos vértices a la manera de quien invoca dos ejemplos modélicos traídos de zonas de la cultura con las que quizás de modo directo Cueto nunca estuvo en contacto. No se olvide, empero, el carácter

eminentemente internacional de los movimientos de vanguardia, su estatuto de acontecimientos globales a los que nadie podía sustraerse del todo. El arte de la ramificación o de la proliferación, al que hay que entender como un signo de la época. Ya en el directorio internacional de vanguardia de Maples Arce, con el que concluía su manifiesto Actual numero 1 de diciembre de 1921, figuraban, entre otros, los nombres de Duchamp, Schwitter, Juan Gris, Braque, Chagall, Max Ernst, Lipchitz, Mondrian, Kandinsky, Boccioni, Weber, Torres-García, Blanchard, Archipenko, Picasso y Chirico… para sólo mencionar a productores asociados a las artes plásticas. El tono fanfarrón de Maples, y las evidentes lagunas de su cultura, en mucho todavía provinciana, a las que habría que atribuir algunas de las pifias en la grafía de los nombres, no desmienten esta irradiación internacional que es inseparable de los movimientos de vanguardia. Walter Conrad Arensberg, el coleccionista y amigo de Duchamp, aparece por ejemplo en el texto de Maples como Walter Bonrad Arensberg.

Kurt Schwitters se vuelve casi irreconocible; como si se tratara de dos personajes, Maples anota “Kurk (sic). Scchwiter (sic)”. Me pregunto, tomando en cuenta estos errores, si “Taline”, uno de los nombres que desgrana Maples en la “sección soviética” de su directorio, no se refiere en realidad a Tatlin. 11

Entre los artistas plásticos mexicanos, Maples incluye -en este orden- los nombres de Diego M. Rivera, D. Alfaro Siqueiros, Mario (sic) de Zayas, Fermín Revueltas y el Dr. Atl. Me gustaría suponer que fue diego Rivera, recién desempacado en México tras de su estancia en Europa, quien le habría ayudado a Maples a completar su directorio internacional. Otros nombres, sin duda, los tomó de las revistas vanguardistas del ultraísmo español que llegaban a México, como Ultra y Grecia, además de Moanomètre que publicaba Emile Malespine en Lyon, Francia.

Especulaciones aparte, que nunca son ociosas, la segunda estancia europea de Cueto (1927 – 1932) lo pone en contacto con algunas de las cabezas más influyentes de la vanguardia internacional. Si vínculo con Joaquín Torres-García será sin duda el más evidente y decisivo dentro de su formación como artista- Ya sería tiempo de que alguna investigación acuciosa nos mostrara las afinidades y correspondencias entre la obra de estos dos artistas., entre los que puede discernirse una notable congenialidad. Aparte de Torres-García y de la presencia de su prima María (Gutiérrez) Blanchard, las actividades de Cercle et Carré lo ponen en comunicación con otros productores de arte que de modo evidente también contribuyen a su formación. Se sabe que Cueto solía visitar el taller de Brancusi, y que tuvo amistad con Mondrian, Lipchitz y Pablo Gargallo. Así se los considere solo como indicios, los nombres antes citados sugieren de manera inequívoca una determinada dirección en el arte contemporáneo. En algunas de las máscaras de Cueto, para no ir mas lejos, es posible advertir influencia de Brancusi. Aunque, por supuesto, esto no excluye tampoco una clara influencia de Alexander Calder, sobre todo en los trabajos con alambre. 12 Afirma Gabriel Fernández Ledesma: “Lo veo mirando con interés las obras de Lipchitz, de Arp, los bronces y hierros de Gargallo y las formas simplísimas de piedra o metales pulidos del viejo rumano Brancusi quien, por arte de magia, también sabía transformar las chimeneas en escultura. Todo lo que pidieron decirle estas obras en su lenguaje plástico, así como el tono de su voz escuchado con atención, tal vez hayan quedado y aparezcan -como un eco lejano- en varias de sus producciones ejecutadas posteriormente en México.” 13 El testimonio de Manuel Felguérez, quien se inició en el arte como escultor antes de concentrarse de manera predominante en la pintura, es quizás todavía más revelador: “Cuando empecé a interesarme en la escultura, todo lo que se veía de arte en México o era académico o pertenecía a la Escuela Mexicana, la única excepción era la obra de Germán Cueto. Pude enterarme que había vivido en Europa y que era amigo de los escultores que yo admiraba, por reproducciones. Más tarde lo conocí y admiré por su gran inventiva, por el constante experimentar con los materiales y sobre rodo porque muchas de sus obras tenían un carácter efímero. Eran obras de papel, de pastas raras, de telas o simples alambres de colores, parecían juguetes.

Un arte gratuito que cumplía su función al proporcionar a su autor el momentáneo goce de haberlo inventado”. Prosigue el agudo testimonio de Felguérez: “Indudablemente Germán Cueto fue un precursor, que tuvo la mala suerte de adelantarse a la compresión que de la escultura tenia la sociedad mexicana de su tiempo, entonces renuncio a hacer objetos para vender y respondió a la indiferencia, escogiendo el difícil camino de hacer arte solo por el gusto de hacerlo.” 14

Debo estas dos últimas observaciones a Sylvia Navarrete. Me gustaría agregar que puede descernirse igualmente la influencia tanto de Lipchitz como de Archipenko en otros trabajos escultóricos de Cueto. El caminante, de Cueto, por ejemplo, muestra en mi opinión una cercanía con Bañista III de Lipchitz, aunque también se lo podría relacionar con Mujer caminando de Archipenko. Hay una cierta estampa genérica, añado, entre El juglar de Cueto, del que existen dos versiones, en pintura y en escultura, y Soldado marchando, también de Archipenko.

Conforme con lo que llevo dicho, no creo que sea arbitrario desmarcar las afirmaciones de Felguérez y hacerlas válidas in extenso, aplicándolas a la totalidad de su producción.

La novedad radical de Cueto dentro del contexto mexicano no se limita al campo de la escultura, como parece sugerir Felguérez; habría que mantenerla con el mismo énfasis en los terrenos del dibujo, de los pasteles, de los esmaltes y de la pintura en general. Este énfasis es tanto mas necesario en cuanto que señala un dominio ignorado que inexplicablemente se pasa por alto. Felguérez pone el dedo en la llaga cuando observa que el arte mexicano con el que se encontró en sus años de formación estaba vinculado, o bien a las inercias de la academia, o bien a la tradición mimética, esto es, reproductiva o representativa de lo real, que no siquiera cedió con el trabajo de nuestros mas arriesgados muralistas. Desde Rivera hasta Tamayo, desde Siqueiros hasta Orozco, pasando lo mismo por el malogrado Fermín Revueltas que por Jean Charlot, nuestros grandes muralistas y revolucionarios de la pintura permanecieron siempre fieles en lo esencial a la transición mimética que dominó en la pintura de Occidente desde la época de los griegos.15 Es en este punto donde habría que reconocer la originalidad del aporte de cueto. No digo que toda su obra sea abstracta en el sentido riguroso de la expresión. De hecho, como se ha visto, el trabajo de Cueto surge en los tempranos años veinte con el descubrimiento de la máscara como objeto estético autónomo, y permanece más o menos atado a este descubrimiento durante toda su vida. Hablar de máscara es remitir de algún modo al rostro, fuente humana de la identidad personal, y matriz originaria que pese a distorsiones, manipulaciones y depuraciones mantiene una inevitable referencia de carácter antropocéntrico, lo que quiere decir, por lo tanto, “humanista”. Cueto recorre el camino de la figuración, pero lo hace siempre tensado por las posibilidades que ofrecen las tendencias más radicales del arte de su tiempo.

No ignoro que los procedimientos gestuales de Siqueiros, así como sus innovaciones en la técnica pictórica le permitieron a Jackson Pollock dar el salto abismal hacia el “expresionismo bastracto”, ni que hay una tendencia depuradora y “semi-abstracta” en los trabajos de madurez de Tamayo.

Empero, esto es un hecho, ninguno de los dos hizo nunca una obra que mereciera llamarse abstracta en el sentido pleno del término. El Fermín Revueltas “constructivista” lo encontramos ante todo en sus portadas y contraportadas de las revistas de Irradiador y Crisol, del que no hay la menor huella en el mural de corte nacionalista sobre la Vírgen de Guadalupe que pinta en San Ildefonso.

No permanece ajeno a la descomposición cubista de la figura, ni a la nueva síntesis “constructivista” de la misma, pero mucho menos a las fuertes tendencias depuradoras (“arte puristas”, se las podría también llamar) que lo obligan a simplificar las líneas y a emprender un camino progresivo de ascesis que lo conduce hacia la ligereza y la inmaterialidad. Y que lo conduce, también, de manera inequívoca, en una porción de su obra que no puede ser ignorada, a esa pintura de la pintura, a esa forma de la forma que se conoce como abstracción.16 Si el arte, como sugiere Bolívar Echeverría, es una de las figuras que adopta dentro del completo societario la posibilidad de la existencia en ruptura, si el arte puede llegar a ser -dicho de otro modo- una forma de la conciencia autocritica, que se separa por la fuerza misma de su gesto autonómico de los hábitos consensuales que imperan en el espacio social, el trabajo de Cueto, perdido entre los intersticios de la cultura mexicana tendría que merecer una revaloración.17 No por su valor simbólico, que por supuesto lo tiene, sino por su contribución a la economía general del arte de nuestro país. Esta contribución es excéntrica, marginal, subterránea, es una contribución en ruptura, podría añadirse, y por ello mismo permanece inatendida, como si en ella se jugara un extremo inoperante y superfluo de nuestro sistema de valores. La moneda que acuña Cueto no entra en circulación, de tan singular que es; no alcanza un valor de intercambio. Desvalorizado por sus estrictos contemporáneos, Cueto opta por evadirse descree él mismo de aquello que produce, por eso produce poco y mucho de lo que produce, como observa Felguérez, oficiando esta vez como testigo privilegiado, es obra efímera, que desaparece en pocos minutos después de haber salido de las manos de su generador.

El ansia por desaparecer, ¿no es ésta una característica eminentemente beckettiana?

La noción de obra se desestabiliza. Una obra que trabaja por la vía sistemática de la sustracción, de la negación, del aligeramiento… exhibe una tendencia objetiva a desaparecer como obra. Por el camino de la abstracción, el artista se despoja de las configuraciones tanto subjetivas como objetivas proporcionadas por el mundo. No es que el mundo desaparezca en tanto tal, lo que se ha desvanecido son los perfiles, las armaduras y las señas de identidad con las que reconocíamos nuestro ser-en-el-mundo.

Nuestros hábitos miméticos, trabajados por una suerte de “reducción fenomenológica”, son puestos entre paréntesis. Durante demasiado tiempo el arte ha sido excesivamente fenomenológico, quedando atrapado, si lo digo con palabras de Duchamp, por una

En este orden de ideas, y ampliando en el sentido arriba indicado el comentario de Felguérez, habría que situar a Cueto como el verdadero “precursor” (si es que hay uno) de la llamada generación de la Ruptura. De hecho, Luis-Martín Lozano casi lo considera (supongo que inconscientemente) como un miembro de dicha generación. costumbre de la luz que no es sino una costumbre “retiniana”, sujeta a las impresiones o huellas que el objeto proyecta en el sentido de la vista. No es el reino del fenómeno hacia donde apunta la abstracción rigurosa, sino a lo que esta más allá del fenómeno. Se abandona el campo multiforme de la apariencia y se inicia el asedio (si lo puedo decir en términos alegóricos) a la kantiana “cosa en sí”. No se pretende lo fenoménico como tal, en su demacración espacio-temporal, sino lo nouménico. Se trasciende con ello el orden de los sentidos, y el arte se abre a un campo desconocido y tal vez infinito a donde quizás solo puede acompañarnos el presentimiento de una idea, el atisbo de un pensamiento, la frágil astilla de un concepto que no acaba de hundirse nunca en el órgano de la piel.

En esta lógica de la desaparición que culmina con el despojamiento de la imagen, en esta sistemática de la sustracción que acaba con el imperio de la mimesis, no me queda otro recurso que acudir al pensador francés Alain Badiou. Reflexionando acerca del efecto de las vanguardias artísticas del siglo XX, Badiou puntualiza: “Ya entrevimos, con el Cuadrado blanco sobre fondo blanco de Malevich, que el siglo es iconoclasta de buena gana. No vacila en sacrificar la imagen para que lo real advenga por fin en el gesto artístico. Pero, sin duda, con respecto a la destrucción de la imagen es preciso agregar de inmediato que sigue existiendo la otra tendencia, la de la sustracción, que procura la imagen mínima, el simple rasgo creador de imágenes, la imagen fugitiva. La antinomia de la destrucción y la sustracción anima todo el proceso de destitución de la semejanza y la imagen. Hay en especial un arte del enrarecimiento, de la obtención de los efectos mas sutiles y perdurables, no mediante una postura agresiva en relación con las formas heredadas, sino a través de los ordenamientos que disponen esas formas al borde del vacío, en una red de cortes y desapariciones.” 18 Estas palabras quedan como anillo al dedo para describir el sentido de la inmaterialidad y del enrarecimiento que priva en el sector mas aéreo del trabajo de Cueto. Me refiero a aquellos trabajos realizados con metal, y en especial a los que utilizan delgados cortes de lamina o, de manera mas estricta, el alambre. El alambre lo que permite es dibujar en las tres dimensiones del espacio. No ocupar el espacio, sino dibujar el espacio. El peso de la materia, la gravedad terrestre, quedan nulificados con estos trazos endebles del alambre que producen volúmenes sin volumen… un espacio donde los huecos pesan as que la presencia misma referida por la escultura. Esta tendencia hacia la nada merece rescatarse en lo que exhibe de una inclinación personal a la introversión y la evasión. Pero sobre todo, si nos referimos a la configuración artística, por lo que tiene de enunciado astillado, de palabra volátil, de erección en fragilidad. Lo que Cueto pone en acción en piezas como El nahual (alambre de hierro y cobre, con cuentas de cristal), Máscara (alambre de cobre), o Mariposa (alambre de hierro y cobre), como diría Badiou, es un arte del enrarecimiento, de la ligereza, de la inmaterialización. Particularmente notables en este sentido, me parece, son Máscara (1948, cintilla de cobre; no confundir con la anteriormente citada) y los trabajos Sin título que muestran un trazo de cinta metálica avanzando en el aire sobre un pedestal de madera y un trazo que se yergue del mismo modo como estableciendo unas volutas en el espacio pero utilizando esta vez la placa de hierro recortada.19

Estas piezas de Cueto, ilustran a la perfección esa “red de cortes y desapariciones”, esas “formas al borde del vacío” de las que habla Badiou en su radiografía de las vanguardias artísticas del siglo XX. La obra sin la presencia de la obra. La obra que queda ahuecada y desmentida por la acción misma de la obra. Hundidas en su fragilidad, en su buscada inconsistencia, con las que se desarticula el teorema básico de lo que conocemos como escultura, las piezas en lámina y en alambre de Cueto son también una pregunta, un signo de interrogación que tiene que ver no solo con su trayectoria personal, sino con la economía general del arte de nuestro tiempo. ¿Qué puede venir después de esto? ¿Qué sentido tiene apostar en favor de la obra? ¿En que dirección tendría que avanzar la creación artística, si es que este sentido sigue siendo discernible? La obra, como tal, ¿vale la pena? ¿Será cierto que la obra, en verdad, obra, como pretende la ontología fuerte de Heidegger en El origen de la obra de arte? ¿No es mejor disiparse en el aire, fragmentarse, dislocarse, des-obrarse, desparecer? Si Samuel Beckett se nos aparece como un obsesionado por el silencio, que emplea las palabras solo para mejor poder despojarse de ellas, así como de su pesada cauda de significados, Cueto pareciera remendar con el alambre este gesto beckettiano de sustracción y nulificación. Refugiarse en la inconsistencia, en lo que se ha quedado sin firmeza y sin sustancialidad, este pareciera ser el último camino. No existir, sino inconsistir. Anota el Diccionario de autoridades: “Consistir. Estar, fundarse en tal o cual cosa”. Lo que Cueto sugiere es que nuestro estar es, en lo esencial, precario. Que no sostiene. Que no se funda ni en esto, ni en aquello no en lo de más allá.

El testamento de Cueto, si es que alguno hay, parece apuntar con un temblor de dedos hacia esa abundante carencia que obstinadamente nos rodea.

esde hace mucho tiempo, amigos y curiosos aficionados de ambos lados del Atlántico me preguntan cómo me ha llegado este entusiasmo por la obra de Germán Cueto.

Es una historia personal tan antigua que tengo que reconstruirla a partir de libros, catálogos y correspondencia; archivos que a veces resultan incompletos por los incesantes viajes al extranjero. Una pequeña carta que conservo, con fecha del 30 de octubre de 1976, de Manuel Maples Arce acompañaba un envío de libros que me dirigió, precisando, tras una conversación con el poeta belga Fernand Verhesen a quien le había manifestado mi interés por la poesía de estridentismo. Es probable que conociera un poco de este movimiento mexicano por las lecturas realizadas en la excelente biblioteca latinoamericana de la Universidad de Austin, Texas, donde enseñé literatura americana - y por John Dos Passos, de quien no sabía que había traducido a Maples Arce. Este poeta mexicano me escribió esta primera carta desde Bélgica donde frecuentemente hacía breves estancias porque allí nació Blanca, su esposa. En ese momento, de regreso de los Estados Unidos, yo era el asesor literario del Centro Pompidou de París y desde entonces muy ocupado viajando a Alemania y Rusia para la preparación de importantes exposiciones internacionales. En ese momento, se perdieron muchas cartas que no recuerdo. Aún conservo un poema manuscrito que me dirigió Germán List Arzubide al Centro Pompidou y una carta de Maples Arce que, acompañando un número de Cuadernos Americanos corregidos de su mano con numerosos errores tipográficos, es un copioso comentario de su poema “Estrofas para un amigo” donde precisa lo que puede ser oscuro para mí. Por ejemplo, «el otró Germán» es el «escultor de vanguardia» autor de «la máscara Canibal» que describe más adelante. Hasta su muerte Manuel Maples Arce y Blanca me enviarían sistemáticamente todas las publicaciones y recortes de periódicos relativos a los estridentistas y, como les habían recomendado a sus viejos amigos que hicieran lo mismo, terminaron siendo archivos impresionantes.

En 1980 el Centro Pompidou preparaba una de sus grandes exposiciones temáticas que debía ser Los realismos en las artes y las letras internacionales. Como comisionado de Literatura, había elegido a Alfonso Reyes para representar a América Latina junto a su amigo Paul Valéry. Así que tuve que ir a la Ciudad de México para elegir unos quince documentos originales para la exposición.

A pesar de varios viajes por México, había pasado muy poco tiempo en la Ciudad de México, donde no conocía a nadie del mundo de las letras y las artes, excepto a Margo Glantz a quien había conocido unos años antes. Alojado por los Maples Arce, es Blanca quien me llevaba hasta la Capilla Alfonsina donde Alicia Reyes me orientaba amablemente en mis investigaciones. Recuerdo a Blanca conduciendo con autoridad su gran limusina en el tráfico y callejones de México. La casa de los Maples Arce, ubicada en la calle Vertiz, estaba llena de recuerdos de los países a los que alguna embajada los había llevado, y de pinturas y dibujos de sus amigos estridentistas.

Creo que Blanca y Mireya, su hija, me consideraban

un poco como un primo de provincia curioso por todo. Conversábamos largamente, es cierto, en el salón, bajo el impresionante Café de Nadie de Alva de la Canal, en un ambiente cálido. Todo lo que sabía sobre el estridentismo lo había aprendido en el excelente libro de Luis Mario Schneider que me envió Manuel y que me lo completó con informaciones y precisiones. A su sugerencia pocos encuentros que yo recuerdo: brevemente, con Alva poco conversador y un List muy ansioso. Lamentablemente, Cueto, de quien Manuel estaba muy apegado, había muerto hacía cinco años. En esos días, lo más memorable fue mi encuentro con Octavio Paz. Este hombre que más tarde sería tan elogioso por mi libro Los pintores revolucionarios mexicanos, me acogió como un niño al que reprenden desde que abrió su puerta: “Llevas varios años viniendo a México, ¡y es ahora cuando vienes a verme!» Pero fue muy cordial y dos horas más tarde me invitó a comer.

En 1981 Blanca me informaba del repentino fallecimiento de su marido. Durante esos años yo era requerido en Rusia y luego en Polonia. Fue para

la organización de una exposición en Varsovia que en 1983 o 1984 fui a preguntarle a Michel Seuphor acerda de Cercle et Carré, este grupo internacional de pintores y escultores abstractos de 1929-1930 del cual Cueto era un miembro activo. . Seuphor me habló muy afectuosamente de Cueto. Fue entonces cuando me interesé por la historia particular del escultor mexicano durante sus años parisinos. Lo he abordado en varios libros y catálogos desde Los pintores revolucionarios mexicanos (1985) hasta el muy reciente El fin de las vanguardias. No voy a volver aquí y me quedaré con los recuerdos.

dónde estaban. Me ofreció mostrarme el taller de Cueto. Se accedía rodeando el patio donde había una limusina con los neumáticos desinflados. Nada había cambiado desde la partida del artista: obras en curso, de yeso, lámina, alambre, diversas herramientas, cajas... todo esto cubierto por diez años de polvo y era evidente que la anciana consideraba que este lugar era intocable. Fue conmovedor y triste. ¿Qué hacer? He escrito a la Secretaría de Cultura de México una carta oficial solicitando ayuda de cualquier tipo para la protección de la viuda y de la obra del artista. Ninguna respuesta.

Convertido en comisario independiente y para entonces con base en Italia, una propuesta de Pontus Hulten y de Germano Celant me asoció indefinidamente con ellos para prever en Venecia la más colosal de las exposiciones del futurismo mundial según el deseo de los patrocinadores Fiat. En Los pintores revolucionarios mexicanos, es el capítulo estridentista, y particularmente las reproducciones de las máscaras de Cueto, lo que más sorprendió. Por eso quería convertirla en una sala principal en la futura exposición en el Palazzo Grassi. En 1985, por un mandato italiano, regresé a México para reunir obras prestadas para exponer en Venecia. No había previsto que el estridentismo era entonces desconocido en los museos mexicanos. El Posada y la Tehuana de Cueto, de los cuales Luis Cardoza y Aragón me había señalado su existencia en las reservas del Museo de Arte Moderno eran demasiado tardíos para mi propósito.

Gracias a Blanca que prestaba su Café de Nadie y mucho más, pude ponerme en contacto con las familias propietarias de obras de artistas estridentistas; además de List Arzubide que aún está vivo, pude visitar a las familias de Alva de la Canal, Fernando Leal, los hermanos Revueltas y otros que lamentablemente no recuerdo. También recuerdo haber sido regañado brevemente por Raquel Tibol porque, decía, que yo quería mostrar un movimiento mexicano completamente olvidado entre los «fascistas»! Yo viajaba gracias a una camioneta de Pemex que me prestaba mi viejo amigo Orlando de la Rosa! Cueto era un caso particular. En mi primera visita tuve que ir con Blanca ya que la viuda del artista (que me había escrito y enviado documentos en 1982), María Galán de Cueto, no recibía extraños en su casa por miedo a los ladrones. En mis visitas posteriores, me recibía con benevolencia, pero me quedé desconcertado porque ocultaba pequeñas esculturas bajo los muebles e incluso una piedra en el refrigerador. En algunos casos admitía que había olvidado

De regreso a Europa recibí una larga y lamentable carta de María Galán de Cueto fechada el 30 de octubre de 1985 sobre una “caja de cartón” confiada a la Embajada de Francia en México dos meses antes.

Allí le dijeron que podía enviar lo que quisiera por la valija diplomática. “Estoy terriblemente mortificada por la mala suerte que tuvo el envío del material referente a mi esposo Germán Cueto…”. Me explicó que esta caja contenía diversos documentos y, sobre todo, fotografías originales de las que no tenía copia.

Pensó que me enviarían la caja al Centro Pompidou.

Una posdata de otra tinta explica el misterio: “La Sra. Silvete de la Embajada de Francia en México mandó el paquete por la valija diplomática a la “Bienal de Venecia”. El error viene entonces de una funcionaria que, oyendo hablar de arte y de Venecia, pensó que sería más fácil enviar directamente por la valija diplomática a la Bienal de Venecia. El Palazzo Grassi no tiene nada que ver con la Bienal, que es una gran feria de arte contemporáneo en el otro extremo de la ciudad y en otra temporada. Esta preciosa suma de documentos irreemplazables no tenía ninguna posibilidad de llegar a mí y se perdió irremediablemente en la inevitable prisa de una feria.

Un pequeño grabado en madera de Leopoldo Mandez prestado al INBA fue suficiente para darle un aire muy oficial a todos los préstamos de México, y la joven Cristina Gálvez fue encargada de transportar todo al Palazzo Grassi en 1986. Una cuarentena de pinturas, esculturas y dibujos, sin contar los libros y revistas, me recuerda el catálogo de Futurismo-Futurismi donde la máscara caníbal se ríe a toda página cerca del Café de Nadie. Además de la famosa máscara de List Arzubide, Maria Galán de Cueto también había prestado el innovador Proyecto de Monumento a la Revolución que atraía a los conocedores. Lo más halagador para la sala mexicana situada en un paso obligado de la vasta exposición es que era elegida

por las televisiones como lugar desconocido, colorido e inesperado para filmar las entrevistas. Fue un regreso del estridentismo a la escena internacional que justificaba la media docena de páginas que yo había publicado en Nueva York en Artforum.

Los estridentistas todavía no estaban suficientemente presentes en los museos y en la historia del arte para que se pensara en ellos. En 1992 en el Centro Pompidou que preparaba una exposición Arte de América Latina, los organizadores descubrieron tardíamente esta ausencia. Con el muralismo que no se podía presentar materialmente, se me pidió que hiciera con toda prisa un artículo sobre el estridentismo ausente ilustrado por tres pequeños grabados de Alva de la Canal. Consolémonos diciendo en francés que es mejor que nada.

A lo largo de los años, muchos amigos mexicanos, desde Octavio Paz hasta Helen Escobedo, me han hablado de Cueto. Manuel Felguerez me dijo que, cuando él estudiaba escultura, los medios oficiales preferían artistas figurativos, en la reconocida tradición mexicana. Cuando Mercedes Iturbe me invitó a una presentación de mi libro de 1985 en el Centro Cultural México en París, a mi comentario de que las máscaras mexicanas llevaban una tradición antigua y popular del país, Juan Soriano agregó que también estaban vinculadas a la teatralidad universal. No he olvidado esta reflexión.

En 1997 Martín Chirino, que dirigía el Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno de Las Palmas, me había dado la libertad de crear una exposición de escultura forjada en el siglo XX en todos los continentes: Forjar el espacio. Antiguo palacio colonial de varios pisos reconvertido en museo, el edificio y su jardín ofrecían una excepcional variedad de volúmenes y espacios, y la proximidad del puerto permitía la llegada de obras de peso y de envergaduras monumentales. Un espacioso sótano equipado para soportar cargas pesadas podía acoger una escultura de Richard Serra de varias toneladas y las gruesas siluetas de hierro del chino Chen Ting-Che. Gracias al clima igual que de las Canarias se podían utilizar los jardines y la terraza general para que el viento animara los móviles de Alexandre Calder o de Geneviève Claisse. Entre el aura de celebridad de Pablo Picasso, entre las máquinas frenéticas de Jean Tinguely, entre las dislocadas criaturas africanas de los hermanos Dakpogan, ¿No íbamos a olvidar a Germán Cueto, no se perdería en un gran catálogo de más de quinientas páginas? Solo se notaba en él porque, con media docena de esculturas de diversas técnicas, era uno de los artistas mejor representados en cuanto a número de obras. Las había instalado en un estrado en un ángulo, lo que lo apartaba un poco y atraía la atención de los visitantes.

Es la Tehuana prestada por el M.A.M. de México llenaba la portada del catálogo en el que era el único artista que se beneficiaba por sí solo de una decena de páginas tituladas Cueto y la Invención de la escultura Moderna en América Latina. Javier Cueto Galán, que había acompañado las esculturas de su padre y una máscara en lámina perteneciente a su hermana, Mireya Cueto, se decía muy gratamente sorprendido. En las mismas condiciones estas esculturas irán con toda la exposición a la I.V.A.M. de Valencia, y finalmente en Francia en el Museo de Bellas Artes de Calais.

Fue también en el norte de Francia que pude presentar de nuevo, a Germán Cueto y finalmente en un contexto mexicano. Conocí a la directora Joëlle Pijaudier-Cabot cuando fui al Museo de Arte Moderno de Lille Métropole en Villeneuve d’Ascq para solicitar un importante préstamo de cuadros cubistas en Century City, la inauguración de la Tate Modern en Londres en marzo de 2001. Al año siguiente me pidió que diseñara una exposición de artistas mexicanos y europeos que hayan trabajado en México. Sería México-Europa-1910-1960, ida y vuelta en 2004, gran empresa que necesitó dos largas estancias en México en 2003 para visitar artistas, coleccionistas e instituciones museísticas por todo el

país. Una vez más, su generoso recibimiento fue crucial, sobre todo la de Javier Cueto Galán, que me recibió en su casa de Cuernavaca, donde todas las obras de su padre habían sido transferidas tras la muerte de su madre. Trabajé allí durante días, acumulando notas en cantidad sin saber realmente que me serían tan útiles para escribir el libro Germán Cueto.

Los préstamos de México no fueron suficientes para mostrar el vaivén artístico. También fue necesario recurrir a diversos museos de Europa y Estados Unidos. Tuvimos que negociar con las empresas que necesitábamos, trabajo de organización que fue supervisado eficazmente por Joëlle Pijaudier-Cabot. En total tendríamos más de trescientas pinturas, esculturas, dibujos, grabados, fotografías, sin contar las decenas de antiguos libros, revistas y documentos impresos; el museo había sido completamente vaciado para albergar esto. Entre los puntos fuertes, una treintena de esculturas y dibujos de Germán Cueto, una sección para Jean Charlot que los franceses ignoran, y sobre todo, cerca de una sala de los grandes pintores muralistas, por primera vez, auténticos frescos con sus muros, gesto, apuesta fraternal de Walter Boelsterly que había organizado las modalidades técnicas de tal peso y fragilidad que habían necesitado un avión especial para el transporte y un equipo de obreros mexicanos experimentados para el montaje. Lola Cueto también suscitó una curiosidad particular porque estábamos en una región de hilado y tejido. El público parecía tan contento como yo y la prensa ha comentado ampliamente sobre México-Europa.

Desde la exposición Forjar el Espacio, el buen ojo del amigo Juan Manuel Bonet se había interesado por la escultura de Cueto. Como director en Madrid del Museo Nacional Reina Sofía, me pidió que le hiciera una retrospectiva del artista mexicano y que eligiera dos obras que compraría para el museo. No dudé mucho: el Napoleón de piedra de la época Círculo y Cuadrado y la Maqueta para el Monumento a la Revolución que había mostrado anteriormente en Venecia y que había reaparecido en 1999 en España en Pontevedra en Identidada e Volume, 1910-1950, una buena exposición de quince escultores mexicanos. Juan Manuel es un hombre de palabra: ambas obras están expuestas en el mejor museo de España. Al mismo tiempo, la escultura de hierro del bailarín japonés Mikio-Ito había sido retenida por Joëlle Pijaudier-Cabot. No figura en el catálogo México-Europa porque necesitaba una restauración cerca de la base, pero las fotos de la expo-

sición demuestran que efectivamente estaba incluida.

Posteriormente se unió a las colecciones del Museo Lille Métropole, Villeneuve d’Ascq, juiciosa adquisición para un museo donde Cueto se unirá a Jacques Lipchitz, Fernand Léger, Henri Laurens y otros amigos de sus años parisinos.

El libro que serviría de catálogo para la exposición de Madrid fue escrito en 2003. Agregué tres bocetos de Cueto para mostrar el alcance de su pasión por la teatralidad (como había dicho Soriano) y los testimonios de sus amigos; debería haber añadido a Margarita Nelken. La curiosa carta de México a Maurice Nadeau fue incluida por sugerencia de Juan Manuel.

El libro fue editado en 2004 por RM para la exposición que tendría lugar en 2005. Mientras tanto, Juan Manuel había sido reemplazado por una directora mucho más ortodoxa. Yo quería una exposición bastante alegre porque Cueto no es un artista trágico ni un intelectual austero. Era un hombre dedicado en una vida cotidiana donde se sabe reír y respirando un tranquilo optimismo, sin olvidar la teatralidad.

Cuando hice pintar las paredes en rojo y luego verde, amarillo y luego azul, la directora protestó levantando los brazos al cielo: ¡es imposible, es contra la costumbre! También transmití en la exposición la música de Silvestre Revueltas, a pesar de los hábitos que no siempre son buenos. Finalmente, todo el mundo estaba satisfecho cuando todo estuvo listo. Javier Cueto Galán, hablando también en nombre de Mireya Cueto, expresó a todos su satisfacción y los visitantes no parecieron lamentar los coloridos muros y los sonidos de una música discreta y alegre.

(Como la información aportada por el libro-catálogo de Germán Cueto se repiten en ocasiones desde su publicación, señalo aquí algunos pequeños errores a pesar del cuidado de la Editorial RM. Un error tipográfico en la transcripción española hizo que mi 1927 fuera inexacto 1922 como fecha de ejecución de Sacco y Vanzetti. Sin embargo, hay algo de lo que soy el único responsable, página 38: María Blanchard probablemente no pudo dar a conocer a Juan Gris a Cueto ya que el pintor español muy enfermo desde el comienzo del año 1927 murió el 11 de mayo. En el extracto tomado del catálogo del Museo Federico Silva en 2006, los lectores probablemente corrigieron por sí mismos, página 69, a un Cueto que se convirtió en “escritor mexicano” en lugar de “escultor mexicano”).

En el otoño de 2005, me sorprendió gratamente saber que una importante exposición de Germáno Cueto finalmente se estaba inaugurando en México en el Museo Federico Silva en San Luis Potosí y que la Editorial RM estaba prestando mi capítulo Círculo y Cuadrado para el catálogo. Poco después recibí una invitación de Regina Boelsterly Urrutia, directora de dicho Museo, para mi esposa y yo a fin de dar una conferencia en enero de 2006. Recibimiento fraternal en un museo de una ciudad donde no sabíamos que de ahora en adelante volveríamos a menudo. Un placer descubrir en la exposición que entre los préstamos de los diferentes museos y coleccionistas de México, muchas de las obras de gran calidad que faltaban en mis presentaciones del artista en Europa pertenecían a Ysabel Galán, una prima de Javier de la que nunca había hecho sino vagas alusiones, y a la que nunca conocí por aquel entonces. A Ysabel Galán la vi por primera vez, con gran gusto, en la exposición de San Luis Potosí y a partir de entonces y desde hace años, hemos compartido muchas cosas y un gran amistad.

Otra sorpresa poco después fue el anuncio de que otra exposición Germán Cueto tendría lugar en la Ciu-

dad de México en el Museo Carrillo Gil en el otoño de 2006, coordinado por mis amigas Ester Echeverría y Sylvia Navarrete que me había ayudado unos años antes para México-Europa. Me invitaron al debate público que iba a cerrar la exposición. Éste no repitió el del Museo Federico Silva, aunque esta vez, afortunadamente, hubo préstamos imprescindibles de Javier e Ysabel. Felizmente reunidos a esta retrospectiva. En la mesa del debate se había invitado curiosamente a Raquel Tibol que parecía haber venido sólo para criticar la exposición y el trabajo de los dos comisarios. No creo que recordara haberme rechazado drásticamente hace veinte años, pero aún así me agredió como a un ‘extraño’ que no puede saber ciertas cosas ... Por suerte, su vecino de mesa, Evodio Escalante, sólido historiador del arte, la envió duramente a su Argentina natal. La partida furtiva de la señora marcó el regreso de la civilidad y del buen humor ante una bebida amistosa reuniendo a los debatientes y al público.

Finalmente, con estas dos grandes exposiciones que marcaron un reconocimiento en su país, Germán Cueto volvió a ocupar el lugar entre los grandes escultores del siglo XX. 93

wire and pasta, to mention just a few; he explores themes and forms. He also ventures into other artistic disciplines such as: theater, dance, design and cinema, which allowed him to move in the same way between the figurative and the abstract.

the work of mater Germán Cueto (1839-1975), in order to celebrate with such important exhibition, the second anniversary of the Fedrico SIlva Museum of Contemporary Sculpture.

German Cueto is, without a doubt one of the most important Mexican creators of the twentieth century. In 1918, he entered the Academia de San Carlos, his closest teacher being Fidencio Nava with whom he developed his like for sculpture. Germán Cueto was always a restless, constant creator, it was his search sustained by him in the experimentation of materials and forms.

Cueto has been considered as the main sculptor of the Stridentism movement, which is a Mexican avant-garde current, which has multidiscipline as a characteristic, this movement was led by Manuel Maples Arce, who brought together artists such as: Germán List Arzubide, Ramón Alva de la Canal , Salvador Gallardo, Arqueles Vela, Luis Marín Loya, Jean Charlot, Fermín Revueltas, Leopoldo Méndez, Guillermo Ruiz, Emilio Amero, Edward Weston, Tina Modotti and Silvestre Revueltas, among others.

Later, Germán Cueto lived in Europe from 1927 to 1932. At that time, through his cousin, the artist, María Blanchard in Paris came into contact with avant-garde artists, who recognized his artistic talent and welcomed, for this reason we find links in his work with elements of Dadaism, Cubism and Primitivism, resorting, in his creative work, to a great variety of materials, such as: steel, bronze,

In mid-1932, he returned to Mexico, where he continued with his creative work, devoting much of his time to theater, puppetry and dance. At this time Cueto intensifies his creation of masks, by participating in various stagings. We highlight the Ballet “La Coronela”, premiered at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, in 1940, with choreography by Waldeen, music by Silvestre Revueltas and the outstanding participation in the stage setting by Seki Sano. Of course, the masks were by Germán Cueto.

It would be long and somewhat tedious to chronologically gloss over the activities of Germán Cueto, suffice it to say to conclude with this brief summary that in the 1968 Mexico Olympics within the framework of the so-called Cultural Olympics, he made the large-format sculpture “The Corridor”, located in the vicinity of the Olympic Stadium of the University City (UNAM) in the capital. On February 14, 1975, he died in Mexico City.

Since that first exhibition in our Museum of the work of Cueto, 16 years have passed, now in 2021, the year in which the Stridentism manifesto of Manuel Maples Arce’s first centenary is celebrated, the Federico Silva Museum of Contemporary Sculpture exhibits the work of Germán Cueto, the main sculptor of this trend, deeply linked to San Luis Potosí through María Fernández Galán (Maruca).

Fortunately, the work in the exhibition German Cueto: An avant-garde vision belongs to two collections in San Luis Potosí: Fomento Cultural del Norte Potosino A.C. We thank the president of the Board of Trustees Jose Cerrillo Chowell for the support that he has always given to this Museum and in this particular case, the facilities granted to hold this exhibition. The other important collection is that of Mrs. Ysabel F. Galan, always committed to the best causes of the Federico Silva Museum, for this we express our gratitude to her here.

Versatile and solvent in art and its revelations,

German Cueto ( 1893-1975) always privileged sculpture as his essential composition, since suggested by his teacher Fi-dencio Nava during his time at the San Carlos Academy (National School of Fine Arts, 1918-1919). Modern by nature, of Cub-Futurist inspiration, he will be part of the Stri-dentism movement (1922-1925), an enlightened and libertarian cry, a lashing out of the rural tradition and animator of speed and machinism, an emulator of the Futurist Manifesto of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti (1909). Avant-garde without intending to, the corpus of his aesthetic factory declares, urbi et orbi, that the most modest raw materials can be the most eloquent. And he goes on inventing characters, plots, masks, imagi-nary landscapes, labyrinths without escape. Juggler and puppeteer confined to the never ending story …

His is a salvage company, from solid waste (wire, sheet, wood, string and tin), a little plaster or clay, occasionally bronze, cloth supports, cardboard or masonite, watercolor, oil and enamel. Installed in the humility of the media, he will give birth to a vast work whose guiding threads are synthesis, humor, formal perfection. Away from the tempta-tions of the market, he will unalterably attend the viewer, conceived as a dialogue and recipient of the composition. He firmly believed that: “Sculpture, like any work of art, must be: 1: authentic creation; 2: sincere, honest, expression of a feeling or a thought; 3: free and immune to any purely commercial stimulus”3.

He cultivated his deepest and most fertile loves in dance and theater, with a singular predilection for guignol, exercises that rest on movement and rhythm.

With his masks and puppets, the ballet La Coronela by Silvestre Revueltas, finished by Blas Galindo, with the participation of Seki Sano and the choreography of Waldeen (1940) and the staging Lázaro rió by Eugene O’Neill, directed by Julio Bracho at the Hidalgo Theater (1933) or his own creation The war with Ventripón, a satirical comedy that denounces warmongering, with scenery and costumes by Gabriel Fernández Ledesma (1937). It is clear that his intention resides in expression, in establishing the conditions and terms necessary for dialogue, communication and the activation of consciousness to occur. So surprising and self-referential renovator of culture, beyond the national bor-ders, remember that his Parisian stay extends from 1927 to 1932, with previous prepa-ration in Barcelona during the period 1916-1918 after the death of his father, where his cousin Marie [Gutierrez] Blanchard 4 (18811932), a dozen years older than him, would introduce him to the geography of modern aesthetics.

the traps and simulations of an unprovable sexual identity based on genitality, she would be the most philanthropic of guides that the still disoriented Germán Cueto could have found, who for some reason opts for his maternal surname as a letter of introduction, in tune with his relative.

To the extent that this assembler-builder-scavenger seizes himself by leaving the scle-rotic Academy of San Carlos, he would materialize operations of translation of mean-ing through synecdoches, metaphors and allegories, figures that shed their literary skin to acquire plastic and iconic relevance: inversion of the ekphrasis (in Greek, ἔκφρασιϛ, (“extended, detailed and vivid description, which allowed to present the ob-ject before the eyes”), since was the visual representation that described the concepts with their passions, sensations and perceptions. What better illustration than the re-source of the mask!

Cueto closes the field of inhibition and inaugurates the great theater of the world as a collective irruption of a liberating frenzy.

The mask relieves pent-up ten-sion, which erupts like overflowing laughter. Its ultimate meaning is found elsewhere; its meaning is its mystery. When the face is only transfiguration, the mask is the face, the mirror of interiority5.

The bizarre Lord Byron is credited with saying: “And, after all, what is a lie? Nothing but the truth with a mask ”. I do not know for sure if he expressed such a sentence. It seems irrelevant to opt for a definition that unites the mask with the underlying truth, as much as if we associate the mask with the virtue of the αλήθεια, “the state of not being hidden, the state of being evident”. What we can affirm is that suits the need of our creator.

That anonymity that confuses modesty allowing us to act and feel with greater self-confidence.

The fact is that such a conspicuous doer lacks antecedents and yet “is not uprooted,” as Carlos Mérida stated somewhere. Which is totally true. There the forms of the indig-enous distance appear, but they appear as plastic features not as signs of identity.

They are not a destination, but one of many possible origins, since if Cueto’s objects are questioned, they will emerge rushed to the modes of representation of Africa or Oceania. The Tower of Babel becomes inevitable. So his eventual Mexicanness trans-cends Jicarism, which Xavier Villaurrutia blamed for devotees of nationalism in paint-ing or sculpture.

His incorporation to the group that polemicizes against surrealism brought him closer to fundamental characters of the time such as Joaquín Torres García, who acted as his authentic guide in the art world, incorporating him in all the scenarios in which he used to participate. Through his intercession, he joined Cercle et Carré, an artistic move-ment founded by the Uruguayan-Catalan creator himself and the critic Michel Seuphor in Paris in 1929, in order to promote geometric abstraction. A year later the magazine of the same name will appear, of which only three issues would appear.6 In his only group exhibition, held at Gallery 23 in Paris in 1930, in which 43 creators participated, with 130 works, included Hans Arp, Ferdinand Léger, Vassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Kurt Schwitters and Georges Vantongerloo. Germán Cueto is one of the best represented in the show with 4 works: 2 masks and 2 sculptures. Visitors and curious in abundance, but reluctant to buy. The initiative would close on April 30th. with a conference on verbal music and Russian-speaking accompaniment (Michel Seuphor: “Poétique Nouvelle”, published in Cercle et Carré, no. 3), where the speaker hid behind a mask made for the occasion by the mexican artist.7

In the same City of Light (la Ville lumière) Cueto met three notable sculptors who would mark him deeply: José de Creeft (Guadalajara, Spain, 1884-New York, 1982), Pablo Gargallo (Zaragoza, 1881- Barcelona, 1934 ) and Julio González (Barcelona, 1876 - Paris, 1942). Older than him and yet they had reached very similar conclusions since the late twenties and throughout the thirties, in terms of simplifying design, vindi-cation of poor materials such as iron, for example; the core character of movement, humor and everyday topics. They agreed to disdain solemnity and its rhetorical pur-suits, those that privilege virtues and abstractions; while they tried to synthesize the variegated lines of neoclassicism and romanticism in objects barely showing on their outlined edges, permeable, capillary figures, given to float.

They opted for a progressive abstraction or a diluted figuration, dwelling on the com-ponents of what is represented, underlining their instability and nervousness, since the pieces tend to move, unable to stay still, they drum fingers and hands, the feet mark the tone and timbre and in parallel, the factions of the heads are metamorphosed, pre-cisely, into herds of tics that confess not knowing how to be still and at peace …

German Cueto’s compositions induce sporting orexis (in Greek ὄρεξις, “desire”), com-pete and win, since his contribution in bronze, The Runner, for the Friendship Route, in the context of the XIX Olympic Games of 1968, was the alpha and omega of the competitions to refer to the marathon, the last battle, the most heroic, which evoked the first medical war between the Persian empire of Darius I and the Hellenic troops com-manded by Miltiades and Aristides, when the Greeks sensing their defeat, sent an em-issary from Athens to Sparta to summon their support, which is not achieved. However, the almost superhuman effort of Filípides, recorded in the chronicle of Herodotus, when fulfilling his task, continues to be evoked ... Such a superb and simple

composi-tion stands as a sign and mark of the university stadium (1952), projected by Augusto Pérez Palacios, Jorge Bravo and Raúl Salinas Moro and intervened by Diego Rivera when he was in charge of the main entrance, the cauldron and the high relief The Uni-versity, Family and Sports in Mexico.

Faced with the tyranny of André Breton, marked by his uncompromising Gallicism and a whiff of misogyny, artists interested in abstract aesthetics took refuge in three contin-uous movements: Cercle et Carré (1929), Art Concret 8 (1930) and Abstraction-Création 9 (1931-1936). Resistance animated by a double motive: to appear as a cosmopolitan front, an international force conscious of the value of its diversity, and to challenge Sur-realism to debate in aesthetic, philosophical and art history terms. Two exhibitions held at that time would be decisive for the formation of such movements: ESAC (Ex-positors Selectes d’Art Contemporain) at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, orga-nized by Nelly van Doesburg in 1929 and AC: Internationell utställning av postkubist-isk konst (International exhibition of post-cubist art), held a year later in Stockholm, cu-rated by Otto Gustaf Carlsund.

120 Upon returning to Mexico, German Cueto would lose many things, the most relevant: a scene of natural and spontaneous understanding with the most decisive composers of shapes, flat or in bulk, of the 20th century. That community of dialogue disappeared forever. However, the power of his language would not be completely diluted, because even in 1953 when Henry Moore made a stay in our country, the eminent British sculp-tor wanted, in addition to enjoying the Mesoamerican monoliths, was to vi-

sit the work-shop of the most enigmatic, modest to the core, fabler of waking dreams made with pure hardware and solid waste. Suddenly he received an invitation from a foreigner that, when heeded, used to go unnoticed in the mean and ignorant Mexican milieu that sticks its label to the immolation of the florid wars (Xochiyaoyotl) and the characteristic rejection encrypted in humiliation and ignorance.

In his intimate life in 1936 he separated from Lola Cueto (María Dolores Velázquez Rivas, 1897-1978), outstanding puppeteer and puppeteer and the first woman to study at the San Carlos Academy, where they met in their youth, although the divorce was not settled until 1940. In that fateful year in which the Spanish fratricidal war was un-leashed, do not forget that German Cueto held dual nationality (Certificate of Mexican nationality number 191 of January 30, 1947), his sentimental relationship with María Fernández Galán “Maruca” began, although the weddiingl is postponed until April 22, 1944.

Except for a minority of insiders who justify their merits and understand them in an in-ternational perspective, muralism and its triad of prophets monopolize everything without noticing anyone but them, Orozco, Rivera and Siqueiros, high priests of a stat-ist religiosity less and less linked with reality and history, which concentrated honors and official commissions. Cueto, misunderstood on the one hand and absolutely una-ble to make himself heard on the other, was reduced to teaching, taking refuge in the libertarian crusade of political guignol and excluded from the great official initiatives. Nothing stopped him, he created an Eden.

Theo van Doesburg publishes his manifesto with that name, directing his batteries against figuration and symbo-lism. Conception close to architecture that raised the indifferentiation between interior and exterior, and the neces-sary disappearance of the very concept of “wall”. Since 1917, starting with the magazine De stjil, he will promote neoplasticism or constructivism, based on simplicity and balance, supported by the language of geometric abstracti-on. When he introduces the diagonal line as a structural element of the composition together with the primary co-lors, Piet Mondrian will renounce being part of his ranks. As soon as he stepped on national soil, he began the task of preparing projects for various competitions; one of them consisting of raising a monument to the armed feat of 1910. A wooden model survives. It did not fall in the spirits of the jury (1935). And so it happened over time with his proposals, including the Monument to the Mother (1948). His aesthetics found no correlation in Mexico, which he returned to in 1932, coming from an otherwise productive European soggiorno. Different causes explain his return: fundamentally, the death of his cousin and sponsor Marie Blanchard on April 5th of that year; conjunctural, the deterioration of his marriage with Lola Cueto that ended in separation and divorce; structural, the need to intervene in the political and cultural life, still effervescent, of the post-revolution. He will be an exile in his own land, as if he suffered a Greek sentence of ostracism (ὀστρακισμός which comes from ὄστρακον: “eggshell” or “turtle shell”, by extension any shell; in this case, a piece of terracotta with that form where the names of those expelled from the polis, seat and cradle of civiliza-tion were sgraffito). His name, buried fame, and factory of wonders, discreet, were there.

It is unnecessary to elaborate more on a biography where the limitless talent of the artist is united with ignorance or social and even union envy of the meaning and signif-icance of his plastic work. So far this minimal tribute.

The various invention of Germán Cueto is shown in its splendor in the exhibition that the Federico Silva Contemporary Sculpture Museum makes of a very significant part of the collection of Fomento Cultural del Norte Potosino, A.C., a private effort to safe-guard exceptional cultural assets. A very complete selection of pieces that are offered to us as a visual and tactile feast of impossible comparison that confirm that, some of the best and most solid artistic initiatives in our country, incubate and take life by storm in San Luis Potosí.

The winning project with architecture by Jose Villagran Garcia and sculpture by Luis Ortiz Monasterio was inaugu-rated on May 10th , 1949 by then-President Miguel Alemán Valdes. Rafael Alducín Bedoya (1889-1924) from the newspaper Excélsior launched the calling in 1922, together with Jose Vasconcelos, secretary of Public Education, and the support of the Red Cross and the Catholic Church, for the celebration of “Mother’s Day” , as a reaction to the advance of the feminist movement in Yucatan which, in the days of Governor Felipe Carrillo Puerto (1874-1924), supported the right of women to decide about their bodies, including the use of condoms and the practice of abortion; conservative Obregonista, he opposed the delahuertista rebellion being arrested and shot by sentence of a military court in the company of his brothers Wilfrido, Edesio and Benjamín, among other defenders of institution-al life.

temporary Sculpture held the exhibition Germán Cueto to celebrate its second anniversary. Memoria como vanguardia. This, on its own, joined a cycle of individual exhibitions of sculptors from the first half of the 20th century that institutions of our country, such as the National Museum of Art, were carrying out at that time, historiographically rescuing figures such as Guillermo Ruiz, Ernesto Tamariz and others regularly mentioned in Mexican art books but that had not been studied in depth. It was thus that, with broader elements of history, we concluded that before 1950 an exhibition of great magnitude and of the style of sculpture such as that of Germán Cueto (Mexico, 1893-1975) would have been unthinkable in the national territory.

In the decades from the twenties to the fifties of the last century, the Mexican art that the 1910 Revolution promoted and nurtured by giving it themes was known, both in sculpture and in painting, for its massiveness and figurativism, relying on descriptive languages of social claim that would haunt public officials in charge of cultural dissemination. Cueto was a comrade in struggle of the great majority of the revolutionary artists, since the testimonies of his signature or participation remain in the Manifesto of the Union of Technical Workers, Painters and Sculptors and the League of Revolutionary Writers and Artists (LEAR), to name a few. And yet, aesthetically, he worked in opposition and not because he gratuitously contradicted his peers but because of an internal need that he was able to put forward as

a personal manifesto in the theater script Comedia sin solución published for the first time in 1927 in the magazine Horizonte. In this one, the scenography is a window frame, the performances are only through the voices of two men and a woman who wonder without ever going on stage who they are, what they do and how they got there, as a watch, a scream and the shadow and the music of an organ grinder are heard as atmosphere. Such extreme austerity of theatrical elements is parallelism of the formal synthesis that Cueto would find in sculpture decades later with wires and strips.

In Germán Cueto’s paternal and maternal families there were painters and writers with whom he interacted in his childhood and youth years. Cultivated in a self-taught way in art and literature, he was a marveling reader of Spanish classics such as Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, of which he made a bust as a tribute with the stained glass sculpture that we know as Man of glass, surely inspired by El licenciado Vidriera. But not only did he understand the past, the classical, but he also lived modernity like few others, as he exchanged ideas with the Mexican avant-garde artists and with whom he contacted in Paris between 1927 and 1932, the period of his longest stay in Europe, and a period in the one that finally germinated his freest work. In that five-year period, he was part of them, one of the international outposts.

But since the mid 1920s- there had already been claims of renewal in the art of homeland soil - Cueto had been fully integrated into the creative environment, and to this day it has never been absent in Mexican museums and books and other countries, such as Spain, Holland and France. And not because of the mere exhibition of his sculptures but because he is cited in specialized studies, catalogs and journalistic notes about his outstanding participation in the puppet show, dance, theater and cinema. Furthermore, top critics and art historians who were active in his own time and space never forgot it in his writings. On the anecdotal side, his presence in biographies of other intellectuals or artists is surprising, since he was a close friend of the Stridentism artists Germán List Arzubide and Manuel Maples Arce -Cueto is considered a Stridentism artist as well-, but also of the Dutch Otto van Rees, the Uruguayan Joaquín Torres -García, Ramón Gómez de la Serna from Madrid and his cousin, the painter María Blanchard, from San-

tander, among many others. The list of friends of Germán Cueto can be very, really very long and from various fields, so in these brief lines we will remember the painters Julio Castellanos, Ramón Alva de la Canal, Angelina Beloff, but at the same time the writer Ermilo Abreú Gómez and the architect, sculptor and art theorist Mathias Goeritz, the playwright and filmmaker Julio Bracho and the film director Juan Bustillo Oro, to name a few.

While doing small-format work, German Cueto worked on public works that were integrated into the designs of notable architects, such as Carlos Obregon Santacilia, Mario Pani and the aforementioned Goeritz. We will note that Cueto from very early times devoted himself to teaching in high school classrooms and the Mexico City College, La Esmeralda and the Citadel School of Crafts, training new sculptors, such as Angela Gurria, Helen Escobedo and Jorge Dubon, who were some of his students who in turn renewed national art. With these, who were part of the nascent generations of artists who began to stand out in the 1950s and 1960s, the ways of making and conceiving sculpture changed, which favored a better understanding of the work of German Cueto.

Another lesson we learned from the 2005 exhibition was that the life and work of our sculptor were very partially known by current researchers and, therefore, by the general public. Since his death in 1975 and when his first major posthumous individual exhibition, promoted by his widow María Fernández Galán, which was held in 1981 at the Museum of Modern Art in Chapultepec, his work has become a must to explain modern art but , paradoxically, the knowledge of its totality passed into unfair oblivion, leaving records and memories that later seemed to matter only to a few who, without interest in commercialism, made efforts to preserve them. And so, without intent we began to use rhetoric to interpret what we did not know and to repeat distorted common places about his biography, context and production.

Sixteen years after that memorable exhibition, due to the tenacity of several collectors and scholars of Germán Cueto, among which we must especially mention the mining businessman Jose Cerrillo Chowell and Mrs. Ysabel Galan, and thanks to the agility that the digital technology, we can currently observe broader sets of his work and, therefore,

we have increased our knowledge and even better clarified our doubts about the career of one of the most proactive sculptors in our country.

The most recent studies on Germán Cueto reaffirm him as a great sculptor in stone, ceramics and bronze, but simultaneously as an experimenter of unorthodox materials to create expressive units, such as papier-mâché, folded and cut sheets of various metals, wires, strips, cement, plastic buttons, airplane window glass or blacksmith work. Finally, today we recognize that he dedicated a good part of his reflection to creating two-dimensional work, such as drawings and inks, enamels on sheet, paintings on canvas or paper, which are characterized by being complex compositions of planes, tensions and distensions, and in these, we discover Cueto as a sober and delicate colorist. We could only deduce from this that he was a deep connoisseur of sculpture, which he consciously led to break the limits of three-dimensionality to propose an enveloping line in space to define a dynamic volume by using overhead lines and give the void a specific weight.

Dr. Teresa del Conde, master Raquel Tibol, and even before, Jorge Juan Crespo de la Serna, Margarita Nelken and Xavier Moyssén, among a plethora of art critics, observing from particular perspectives, agreed that two themes stand out from Cueto’s sculpture: the head and faces, which are related to the exploration of the individual and his singularity, with the individual and his absence, with the individual and his multiplicity. Regarding plates, by always labeling him as an “abstract sculptor” a blindness did not allow us for many years to realize that he was a prolific portraitist - for justice we must say that his peer, the muralist painter and art writer Fernando Leal did notice it in a lost El Nacional article. This is how he left behind numerous effigies of the Stridentists, his companions in Europe, the puppeteers and family and friends, some lost and others in different collections. To this, we add the works made by request, for example the heads of philosophers and writers of the past that, commissioned by José Vasconcelos, he produced for the Library of Mexico in the Citadel in 1946.

With the same theme of heads and faces, but in an opposite sense of their production, there are the works without a specific reference, of multiple gestures and varied profiles in which on few occasions we can detach emotional issues such as sadness or

joy, what is found in them is a search for the limit, that is, the sculptor sought for a face to cease to be one, but while abstracting it, discovering its unmistakable minimal features from a specific point of observation: eyes, nose, mouth. For the latter, we observe a creative intelligence that tirelessly explored the formal both in composition and in the use of materials.

Cueto, in the thirties participated with the group Cercle et Carré in Paris, there his encounter with Joaquín Torres-García and Michel Seuphor, nourished him with a humanism where geometry was the reflective matter that would lead him to various personal discoveries in his production, perhaps the most important thing was that sculpture had to be dynamic in its essence and that the volume can be drawn in the air with a subtle line: penetrability and movement, light and shadow, contours, but indisputably philosophizing about volume and textures, about space and the way to imprison it and unfold in it.

In the past, in Mexico he was partially accepted and not fully understood, specifically because the administrators of culture were concerned with promoting expressions that internationally projected a country that -on the surface- ceased to be barbaric and bloody, they needed useful speeches, descriptive, easy to understand, and Cueto did not have that; fully devoted to intelligence, which is the substance of art, and not close to political discourses. It is because of that great culture that nurtures the work of Germán Cueto and that he never subjected to ephemeral interests that is why it will always be fascinating and intrepid in freedoms.

The Federico SIlva Museum of Contemporary Sculpture has once again undertaken the task of presenting a select exhibition by Germán Cueto at a time when our knowledge of him is clearer and more precise, although not complete. This exhibition will be very useful because we see two objectives: the first, that the vocation of this museum is consolidated by presenting the Mexican artist who, against the current, made innovations in sculptural form and material; and secondly, it will allow new generations to begin to become acquainted with a generous work of art that results in human concerns that try to explain the being ... how, being so similar, can we be so different? What do we hide in our individuality? What in the crowd? What is the existential cost of freedom?

German Cueto seems to be an anomalous figure

within the Mexican art scene, a figure that dissolves as we approach it. Although linked in its beginnings to the outbreak of the Stridentism movement, in the early twenties, when he participated in the gatherings of the Café de Nadie, as well as the combative positions of the Union of Workers, Painters and Sculptors headed by David Alfaro Siqueiros, whose manifesto he subscribed, Along with colleagues such as Fermín Revueltas, Jose Clemente Orozco, Xavier Guerrero and Carlos Merida, his figure quickly faded to the point of disappearing. In a way, it could be said that Cueto is the least stridentist of the stridentists, not because his proposals from the twenties lack radicality, that is out of the question, but because of his silent disposition, oblivious to the uproar and din of which many of his companions of the forefront demonstrated. His signature at the bottom of the proletarian manifesto that Siqueiros wrote against the delahuertista rebellion (and in evident support of the government of General Álvaro Obregón), which appeared published in El Machete (1924), publication of the Communist Party, lacks as far as possible he knows the trail of continuity: it is not possible to trace him, no aftermath. In the vociferous Mexico of the 1920s, Cueto is an example of parsimony, both in the artistic and political fields. There is something Beckettian in his character, I would like to anticipate, a refractory aspect (one could also say: neutral) that distances him from all militancy and condemns him to silence and loneliness. The family resemblence with Samuel Beckett - by the way, the temptation by the high emptiness, by the rarefied human presence, as well as the taste for the subtraction and for the immateriality, which come to be noticed in many of his sculptures and pictorial works, especially from his later period - is

confirmed in a surprising way by reading his Comedy without Solution, a short dramatic work that stages three static characters, who lack names, who are permanently covered by darkness and whose faces never get to be seen, published by his friend German List Arzubide in the magazine Horizonte in 1927. After some erratic and exasperating speeches, in which misunderstanding dominates, that is, the impossibility of communication. At last there is light, but this light is like a destructive radiation, which destroys all shadows of human presence, and even objects. On stage the only thing that remains is the glare of a blinding light, which has swept away everything. Strange exaltation out of nowhere!

However, when this text that anticipates what years later would be known as “absurd theater” appears published, as happens with the characters in his comedy, Cueto has already disappeared from the Mexican scene. Accompanied by Lola Cueto, his first wife, he has moved to the old continent, where he will remain from mid-1927 to 1932.

Young Cueto, by the way, had already been to Europe before. Harassed by the economic difficulties that the revolutionary movement brings with it, further aggravated by the death of his father, his family decides to send him to Spain in 1916. There he makes contact with his cousin, the excellent avant-garde painter, María Blanchard. I suppose that this early contact has a vocational significance, since upon returning to Mexico in 1918, Cueto resolved to become a sculptor and entered the Academy of Fine Arts.

How does he link to the Stridentists? This link would have to be important as it defines what can be called his first stage as an avant-garde artist, which includes the years from 1923 to 1926. In his memoir, Sovereign Youth, Manuel Maples Arce recalls: “The house of the Cueto was always open to friendship.

At all hours of the day we wandered there, sure to find someone with whom to exchange views on topics of our fervor. In general, the house produced the impression of a workshop, since German, in a shed, modeled the clay, beat the sheet or prepared pastes with which he made masks that recalled the carnival of our childhood, splashing and damaging everything that was around its scope… ”1

Although the evocation is cordial, it is regrettable that Maples does not provide more information about Cueto’s participation in stridentism. Let us add, to the scarcity of signs, the absence of Cueto in the pages of the magazine Irradiador (three issues: September, October and November 1923). Conceived as an “international projector of new aesthetics”, the magazine directed by Maples himself and Fermín Revueltas published works by Diego Rivera, Jean Charlot, Leopoldo Mendez, cartoonist Hugo Tilghmann, and even a photograph of Edward Weston, but there is no trace of Cueto’s presence.

Cueto’s documentable irruption into Stridentism dates back to the famous “Stridentist afternoon” that took place at the Café de Nadie on Saturday, April 12th., 1924. According to the printed invitations that circulated, the act would include the reading of “The history of the Café de Nadie ”,

by Maples Arce, German List Arzubide, Salvador Gallardo, Luis Ordaz Rocha, Miguel Aguillon Guzman and the ultraist Spanish poet Humberto Rivas, who was close at that time. In addition to “Stridentist music” (would it be valid to conjecture some intervention by Silvestre Revueltas?), In the field of plastic arts an exhibition of paintings by Fermín Revueltas, Leopoldo Mendez, Jean Charlot and Xavier Gonzalez ... as well as masks (as a separate category) by German Cueto.

The magazine El Universal illustrated in its number 362, of April 17th., 1924, testifies to the act with the publication of the aforementioned text by Arqueles Vela, which is accompanied by several representative photographs of the event. Next to the paintings, in the upper part, already near the ceiling, there are at least three of the masks made by Cueto, among them perhaps the most famous, the one that the poet, narrator and historian of the movement made of his namesake. German List Arzubide.

In another, a varied crowd is distinguished, and in one more, seated around a table, the presence of some characters stands out, among which one can unequivocally identify Maples Arce, List Arzubide, Salvador Gallardo, himself German Cueto and, immediately afterwards, to his right, the poet Xavier Villaurrutia. By the way, it is not strictly essential to resort to old copies of El Universal illustrated to see this photo, which Luis Mario Schneider included in the final section of his well-documen-

ted book El estridentismo. Una literature de la estrategia that he published in the National Institute of Fine Arts in 1970. Schneider’s failure, to whom the history of stridentism owes so much, consists in not having attempted to identify the participants, so he limits himself to scoring the photo caption: “Meeting at Café de Nadie.” Now it is possible to add, in addition to the precise date on which it was taken, the names of some of the characters that were tattooed there for prosperity. The presence of Villaurrutia, a prominent member of the Contemporaneous group, an eternal rival - as is known - of the Stridentists, may surprise anyone, but I am sure that I am not mistaken in identifying him. Do not forget that beyond the differences, which of course existed, and that the passage of time will magnify, the stridentists and the members of the so-called “group without a group” belonged to the same honorable generation, which alone suggests that there had to be more than one aesthetic affinity between them. I will come back to this point later.

A slightly earlier issue of El Universal Ilustrado (340, corresponding to November 15th, 1923) already contained an explicit mention of German Cueto’s masks. I can think, although I admit that it is a mere hypothesis, that this is the first description of Cueto’s work in the national press. It is a brief note signed

by Silvestre Paradox (pseudonym of Arqueles Vela), which in its core states: “German Cueto, the sculptor of the new, is taking the most peculiar attitude from the figure of the Stridentists (…) German List Arzubide was the first to become nationalized with his ungainly attitude on Holy Saturday, with his huge frozen laugh, with his huge stone age laugh, crusher of all tears. Cueto has managed to scalpel, with a cunning clinic trickery, List Arzubide’s laughter. “ Cueto appears here as the primitive laughter surgeon of the avant-garde List, whom he dissects with his scalpel, but it is also implied that he himself is an avant-garde artist. The sculptor of the new, he is called by the columnist. What could the novelty of his proposal consist of ? I hasten to answer: not only conventional but “disposable” materials. Cardboard, papier-mâché ... plaster. He is an artist of poverty who works with expendable materials. Something anticipates with his irreverent attitude to what in later decades will be known as “arte povera”. From the beginning of himself, Cueto shows a position that will accompany him throughout his life, and that undoubtedly distinguishes him: that of

an experimenter with materials. On the other hand, the content of his proposal could not be more innovative, since what Cueto achieves is the aesthetic autonomy of the mask. He invents a genre that existed in a larvae way, but always subject to its utilitarian or ceremonial function. The masks of indigenous rituals, with an evident ethnographic value, theatrical masks, as well as the festive masks that are used in the carnival -as Maples Arce recalls well- are detached from their representative and community function, abandoning the “social service ”, So to speak, and they become objects of aesthetic contemplation.

Purged of its dramatic history and its utilitarianism, the mask becomes an independent semiotic object, which has earned the right to exist as a thing or as a sign in itself.

Without demerit of the autonomy achieved, the appearance of two aspects are clearly distinguished in Cueto’s innovative work: 1) The mimetic mask, which “represents” the face of a well-known character; as an example, the masks of List Arzubide, of the philosopher Samuel Ramos, even that of Hitler, serve as an example ... 2) The mask devoid of representative value, and that we could call “creationist”, whose purpose is is as a pure invention form, by which free play is used with the line, the curve and the coloristic arrangement. This classification can be superimposed on another, not necessarily symmetrical: 3) that of the protruding, primitive mask, saturated with consistency, excessive in its gross materiality, always oscillating between the grotesque and the archaic, which contrasts with 4) the geometric mask, “ aerodynamics ”, if it can be called that, which saves lines and seeks a refinement that is achieved by putting the minimum elements into play. There is an abstractionist tendency in this last aspect, as long as the term is understood in its original etymological sense, as the elementary act

of abstracting, separating, distancing, purifying, dematerializing. It is the sense, to which Arqueles Vela seems to ascribe when in his essay “Stridentism and Abstractionist Theory”, he calls on young creators to make “a pure art without embossing”. (Emboss: carve in relief, in leather or veneer). An art “without pictorial perspectives. Without anecdotalism. A sincere poetry, without ordering the emotion that are always messy ”. If Cesar Vallejo had exclaimed, in one of his poems by Trilce: “Absurd, only you are pure!”, Arqueles Vela will continue: “The real and natural in life is the absurd. The disjointed, No one feels or thinks with perfect consistency.” 2 Cueto’s second irruption into Stridentism took place in early 1926, when he presented his first solo exhibition at Café de Nadie, which by then was dying and was about to close its doors. 3 Although I have not found specific testimonies about this exhibition, an interesting article by Xavier Villaurrutia entitled “Aesthetics of the mask” can be brought up. I clarify that this essay, which can be found in the Author’s Works, was originally included in a monograph by Roberto Montenegro entitled Mexican Masks, although it was also published in El Universal Ilustrado on March 4th, 1926, a date strangely close to that on which Cueto’s exhibition would have been inaugurated. 4 At the end of the article published in El Universal Ilustrado, and after the author’s signature, there is a short note that the Villaurrutia Works omits, and that literally states: “The collection of masks that the painter Roberto Montenegro presents and orders in this unprecedented monograph in our art studies and manifestations, incited this aesthetic path. -CV.” This unsolicited clarification, this obviously overdetermined additional padlock or safety, as Freud mi-

ght observe, ends up suggesting in some way what he in principle tries to deny. How to repress, in effect, the reference to Cueto, who in those days just had an exhibition, and who has discovered (but also proposed) first than anyone else in our country the autonomous value of the mask as an aesthetic sign?

Villaurrutia’s article, as expected, is illustrated with photographic reproductions of the masks that Montenegro selects, all of them festive or ritual masks belonging to various ethnic groups of Mexican culture.

This would ensure in principle that Villaurrutua’s observations do not refer to Cueto’s work at all. And yet… There is an air in Villaurrutia’s text that seems to point to another place, precisely the place of aesthetic autonomy. Although he begins his text by stating, as an axiom, that “the reality of the mask is the face”, as if from the outset establishing an unbreakable identity between these two elements, it is soon noticed that Villaurrutia sees in the mask an event that is moving away progressively from the traces of the face, thus canceling the initial equation. Like any self-respecting avant-garde, Villaurrutia always bets in favor of the aesthetic object as a refined object, which shines by itself, forever distanced from any utilitarian function.

128 Villaurrutia writes: “Ancient as the word, so similar to it insofar as it tries to fix in a narrow and definitive gesture the expression of a significant reality; since it is destined both to show something, as to hide something as well; it is like a bridge to a pure kingdom.

Reality does not give up its portion, and the bridge does not fall to remain on the other side but when the mask is sufficient per se, free and alone, without memory of its origin. “ (The underlines are mine.)

In a flashy phrase, Villaurrutia sums up: “The flight of the face towards the mask is a symptom of pure aesthetic blood.” Many years later, the art critic Paul Westheim, also spurred on by his avant-garde training, will write in a somewhat similar way: “The mask is an expression of man’s supra-real personali-

ty.” 5 However you look at it, Villaurrutia’s formula it is more radical than Westheim’s, insofar as it implies a certain dehumanized bias. Man escapes from man thanks to that aesthetic impulse that sprouts in the unusual or delusional flower of the mask. He is so erased from his face so that something else very different and singular appears, a pure object, which reforms the anthropocentric features, and which is definitively detached from the dramatic, architectural and carnival operations that imprisoned its significance.

Villaurrutia describes in this way the modern advent of the aesthetic autonomy of the mask, which of course does not leave him impassive: “Dead or forgotten the functional practice -adventure and carnival-, drowned in the modern current the symbolizing significance of the rite, and disdained by the actors, the mask acquires its just aesthetic significance. Impossible, then, to include it in the domains of painting or sculpture. If you participate in both, you can register in neither.“ A moment’s reflection is enough to realize that these statements cannot be applied to the letter of the ritual masks that Montenegro collects. Villaurrutia testifies to the emergence of a new semiotic object, which did not exist before, which is halfway between painting and sculpture, which participates in both disciplines but cannot be reduced to either of them.

As if practicing double vision in perfect synchrony, Villaurrutia seems to have one eye tradition (the historical, tribal, and Montenegrin masks) and another on avant-garde (Cueto’s “creationist” and self-sufficient masks). One can guess, in all this, the joy of discovery 6. The invention of a genre, as far as it is authentic, I believe, could not go unnoticed by the art critic in Villaurrutia.

This, however, had no greater resonance in Cueto, who leaves Mexico and begins a European stay (1927 - 1932) that will mark him forever. Perhaps at

the invitation of his cousin Maria Blanchard, Cueto moves with his young wife Dolores Cueto to Paris, where he gets in touch with Joaquín Torres-Garcia and other prominent artists who will be part of the Cercle et Carré group, whose activities he joins. In the exhibitions organized by Torres-García, best of the European avant-garde coincide.

They include, among others, the names of Hans Arp, Fernand Léger, Piet Mondrian, Vassily Kandinsky and Kurt Schwitters, as documented by Serge-Fauchereay in the book that he recently published at the Reina Sofia National Museum and Art Center, Spain. 7 Cueto participates with various works in these exhibitions as well as in that of the 1931 Salon des Surindépendants. Sheet and metal work, polychrome stone, wire arabesques, solid or thinned bronze, ceramics and enamels. Glass beads (beads), cement, wood, plaster, paper pulp, siporex; these are some of the materials in which Cueto’s creative work will be diversified. Without ever completely abandoning the initial model of the mask. To which he returns sporadically at various stages of his life, Cueto explores with delight other possibilities of sculpture, drawing and painting. At least those that are within his reach. The singular economy of a Léger and a Brancusi, the poetic simplification of a Calder, a sense of Gothic that he manages to mix with a strong semi-abstract tendency, the impulse towards geometric simplification, which preserves only the essential lines, give to his plastic work from the thirties an unmistakable mark.

In 1932, on the death of the painter Blanchard, Cueto and his wife decided to return to the country. 8 The politicized 1930s marked a period of left-wing activism in Mexico in which the refined art of Cueto hardly fit. The period of Plutarco Elías Calles, which is followed by the rise to power of Lázaro Cárdenas and the consequent prominence of the LEAR (League of Revolutionary Writers and Artists), which en-

joys full official support, make up a bombastic and edgy scenario (and in some cases opportunistic) in which the terse and parsimonious figure of Cueto is somehow condemned to anonymity or marginalization. The avant-garde orientation that the Revolution calls for, eager for images dominated by the presence of the masses both “workers” and “agrarianists”, as an emerging subject in the history of the class struggle, is in some way refractory, if not hostile, for those suspended geometries, that undo their planes in the high void, that Cueto proposes in his failed reinsertion into Mexican culture. Fauchereau sums up in the following terms the (inevitable) destiny of the artist, on his return to his native country: “As he cannot claim a place of the first order in the Mexican art world, since he does not accept the reigning realism, and despite his enthusiastic adherence to the principles of the revolution, Cueto devoted himself to theater and puppetry in the company of Lola and her friend List Arzubide. “ A revolutionary within the revolution, Cueto participates, in a frustrated way, in the contest launched by General Cárdenas requesting projects for what was to be the Monument of the Revolution. Cueto’s model is interesting for its machinic and dehumanized proposal. His interpretation of the Great Event, this is evident, does not fit at all in the official rhetoric of the time: neither bayonets set, nor carbines 30-30, nor torsos of the peasants raised in arms or of the workers breaking out the necessary strike that leads to emancipation. Instead of the fiery faces, or the representative lines of the social conglomerate, the solid foundation of a new democracy, Cueto has an abstract construction that somehow imitates the cold structure of a motor or an electricity generator. Perhaps he echoed in his brain Lenin’s stentorian definition: “Socialism is Soviet power plus electrification.”

Metal plates can be seen, the vertiginous movement of the coil, the incalculable dynamism of the energy released by the Revolution, which is crowned with a

wheel on the upper part that symbolizes, perhaps, the unstoppable flow of the technical and industrial progress ... but all within a desolate context, in which the human presence is frighteningly absent.

Also the artistic avant-gardes, from Futurism, machine were exalted as the supreme form of beauty of the time. Einstein and Walter Benjamin, for example, were dazzled by the automation of the production machine, which ranges from a tractor that facilitates agricultural work and a mechanical milk extractor in the stables, to the serial production chain within a yarn and fabric factory. Even an artist as radical as Marcel Duchamp, who openly disavowed not only what he called “retinal painting”, but the aesthetic attitude in general, always seemed fascinated by the magic of mechanical movement, as his first ready-made shows, a bicycle wheel, and as confirmed by his Great Glass, which represents a kind of erotic siege of a bride in which the desiring characters have been displaced by mechanical objects that mimic high-voltage turbines and capacitors. It is not at all strange, in this context, for Cueto to shed all human reminiscence and see in a kind of electrical generator the true destiny of liberated humanity, and therefore in the true image of that bloody mother (but now sublimated) that was the Revolution.

The ties with the Stridentists, or rather, with what remains of the Stridentism, which for these years have passed away, are resumed at this stage of their creative work, and persist several years later. Planos, from the late 1940s, an audacious geometric work, while eminently abstract insofar as it does not represent any recognizable human reality, but rather consists of a composition of geometric planes that form in the background a kind of frustrated Mobius strip, superimposed on two rhomboidal columns that float in space, in the manner of a yes and a no that remain indeterminate, slightly inclined so that it seems that they are approaching or moving away from the viewer’s perspective.

It is known that this composition by Cueto is inspired by a symphonic poem of the same name by the composer Silvestre Revueltas, another old acquaintance, along with his brother Fermín Revueltas, from the happy years of Stridentism. If at other times Revueltas appears as a Mexicanist composer, who takes up (despite his advanced harmonic language) elements linked to local color (for example, in La noche de los Maya, or in Janitzio), in Planos we witnessed one of the most refined and abstract scores, as the critics have recognized, of the composer. 9 It is worth remembering that in its very beginnings, the Stridentist movement conceived itself as a “cosmopolitan” movement, of eminently international inspiration, and that for this reason it placed itself far above the abstruse reflections of coarse nationalism (of here is one of the slogans of the Stridentist Manifesto of Maples: “Death to priest Hidalgo!”) 10 With Planos (1948), and other various works from the same period, such as the oil painting entitled Abstraction (1945), or the drawing called Abstract Head (1941), Cueto is projected as the first of the Mexican plastic artists to venture into the fields of abstraction, in the rigorous and precise sense that this word has in the art of our days. He is significantly ahead of the time by a few years, it seems to me, to the work of another great painter living among us: Carlos Mérida. Although he comes from a radically different source, Cueto is in the same way the obligatory antecedent that prepares the emergence of the eminently abstract work of Lilia Carrillo in the 1960s and the sculptural work of Angela Gurría in those same years.

Perhaps the craving for classification (which is also, and inevitably, simplifying) has been responsible for Cueto’s scant place in the history of Mexican art.

Very soon he is labeled as sculptor, or a sculptor in his “mask maker” aspect, … so the polymorphous interests of an artist who lavishes himself in many different directions remain out of the picture, all

of them risky and innovative within their context.

Painting, pastels, drawings, coloristic enamel works, his proposals with copper or sheet metal, his volatile figures made of wire ... his tenacious and at the same time playful experimentation with all kinds of materials. A careful look at Cueto’s work forces us to recognize a variety of registers that go beyond any attempt at classification. He can no longer be dispatched with a flag, as has been the custom until now.

The playful, polymorphous and multi-directional dimension of his proposals can only be assessed when one thinks about what some of his strict contemporaries did at other times, among whom we would have to count avant-garde such as Vladimir Tatlin and László Moholy-Nagy, This forces us to take into account, in a more general sense as indispensable references, the same proposals of Soviet constructivism as those of the Bauhaus.

I point out these two vertices in the manner of someone who invokes two exemplary examples brought from areas of culture with which Cueto perhaps never had direct contact. Do not forget, however, the eminently international character of the avant-garde movements, their status as global events from which no one could completely escape. The art of branching or proliferation, which must be understood as a sign of the time. Already in the international avant-garde directory of Maples Arce, with which he concluded his manifesto Current number 1 of December 1921, included the names of Duchamp, Schwitter, Juan Gris, Braque, Chagall, Max Ernst, Lipchitz, Mondrian appeared, among others. , Kandinsky, Boccioni, Weber, Torres-García, Blanchard, Archipenko, Picasso and Chirico, to only mention producers associated with the plastic arts.

The boastful tone of Maples, and the evident gaps

in his culture, still largely provincial, to which some of the mistakes in the spelling of names should be attributed, do not deny this international irradiation that is inseparable from avant-garde movements.

Walter Conrad Arensberg, Duchamp’s collector and friend, appears for example in the Maples text as Walter Bonrad Arensberg. Kurt Schwitters becomes almost unrecognizable; as if it were two characters, Maples notes “Kurk (sic). Scchwiter (sic) ”. I wonder, taking these errors into account, if “Taline”, one of the names Maples lists in the “Soviet section” of his directory, does not actually refer to Tatlin. 11 Speculations aside, which are never idle, Cueto’s second European stay (1927 - 1932) puts him in contact with some of the most influential heads of the international avant-garde. If the link with Joaquín Torres-García was undoubtedly the most evident and decisive in his training as an artist- It would be time for some thorough investigation to show us the affinities and correspondences between the work of these two artists, among which can be discerned a remarkable congeniality. Apart from Torres-García and the presence of his cousin María (Gutiérrez) Blanchard, the activities of Cercle et Carré put him in communication with other art producers who in such an evident way also contribute to his formation. It is known that Cueto used to visit Brancusi’s workshop, and that he was friends with Mondrian, Lipchitz and Pablo Gargallo. Thus considered only as indications, the names cited above unequivocally suggest a certain direction in contemporary art. In some of Cueto’s masks, in order not to go any further, it is possible to notice the influence of Brancusi.

Although, of course, this does not exclude either a clear influence of Alexander Calder, especially in the work with wire. 12

Among the Mexican plastic artists, Maples includes -in this order- the names of Diego M. Rivera, D. Alfaro Siqueiros, Mario (sic) de Zayas, Fermín Revueltas and Dr. Atl. I would like to assume that it was Diego Rivera, recently unpacked in Mexico after his stay in Europe, who would have helped Maples complete his international directory. Other names, undoubtedly, were taken from the avant-garde magazines of Spanish ultraism that reached Mexico, such as Ultra and Grecia, as well as Moanomètre published by Emile Malespine in Lyon, France.

Gabriel Fernández Ledesma states: “I see him looking interestedly at the works of Lipchitz, Arp, the bronzes and irons of Gargallo and the very simple forms of stone or polished metals of the old Romanian Brancusi who, as if by magic, also knew how to transform chimneys in sculpture. Everything that these works told him in their plastic language, as well as the tone of his voice listened to with attention, may have remained and appear -like a distant echo- in several of his productions later executed in Mexico”.13

The testimony of Manuel Felguerez, who began in art as a sculptor before concentrating predominantly on painting, is perhaps even more revealing: “When I began to be interested in sculpture, all art that was seen in Mexico or was academic or belonged to the Mexican School, the only exception was the work of German Cueto. I was able to find out that he had lived in Europe and that he was a friend of the sculptors that I admired, through reproductions. Later I met him and admired him for his great inventiveness, for his constant experimentation with materials and especially because many of his works had an ephemeral character. They were works of paper, rare paste, cloth or simple colored wires, they looked like toys. A free art that fulfilled its function by providing its author with the momentary joy of having invented it ”. Felguérez’s acute testimony continues: “Undoubtedly Germán Cueto was a forerunner, who had the misfortune of anticipating the understanding of sculpture that Mexican society had of his time, so he gave up making objects to sell and responded to indifference choosing the difficult path of making art just for the fun of it.” 14 In accordance with what I have said, I do not think it is arbitrary to uncheck Felguérez’s statements and make them valid in extense, applying them to the en-

tirety of his production. Cueto’s radical novelty within the Mexican context is not limited to the field of sculpture, as Felguerez seems to suggest; it should be maintained with the same emphasis in the fields of drawing, pastels, enamels and painting in general.

This emphasis is all the more necessary in that it points to an ignored domain that is inexplicably overlooked.

Felguerez hit the nail on the head when he observes that the Mexican art with which he encountered in his formative years was linked, either to the inertia of the academy, or to the mimetic tradition, that is, reproductive or representative of what real, which did not even yield to the work of our most daring muralists. From Rivera to Tamayo, from Siqueiros to Orozco, passing the ill-fated Fermín Revueltas as well as Jean Charlot, our great muralists and painting revolutionaries always remained essentially faithful to the mimetic transition that dominated Western painting since the time of the Greeks. 15 It is at this point where Cueto’s originality should be recognized. I am not saying that all of his work is abstract in the strict sense of the term. In fact, as it has been shown, Cueto’s work emerged in the early 1920s with the discovery of the mask as an autonomous aesthetic object, and he remained more or less tied to this discovery throughout his life. To speak of a mask is to refer in some way to the face, the human source of personal identity, and the original matrix that, despite distortions, manipulations and purifications, maintains an inevitable anthropocentric reference, which therefore means “humanist”.

Cueto walks the path of figuration, but he does it always tense by the possibilities offered by the most radical tendencies in the art of his time.

He does not remain alien to the cubist decomposition of the figure, nor to the new “constructivist” synthesis of it, but much less to the strong purifying tendencies

However, this is a fact, neither of them ever did a work that deserves to be called abstract in the full sense of the term. The “constructivist” Fermín Revueltas is found above all on his front and back covers of the Irradiador and Crisol magazines, of which there is not the slightest trace on the nationalist mural on the Virgin of Guadalupe that he paints in San Ildefonso.

(“purist art”, they could also be called) that force him to simplify the lines. and to undertake a progressive path of asceticism that leads him towards lightness and immateriality. And that leads him, also, unequivocally, in a portion of his work that cannot be ignored, to that painting of painting, to that form of the form that is known as abstraction. 16 If art, as Bolívar Echeverría suggests, is one of the figures that adopts within the whole society the possibility of existence in rupture, if art can become - in other words - a form of self-critical consciousness, which separates by the very force of its autonomic gesture from the consensual habits that prevail in the social space, Cueto’s work, lost among the interstices of Mexican culture, would have to deserve a reassessment. 17 Not because of its symbolic value, which of course has, but for its contribution to the general economy of art in our country. This contribution is eccentric, marginal, underground, it is a contribution in rupture, it could be added, and for that very reason it remains unattended, as if an inoperative and superfluous end of our value system were at stake. The currency that Cueto coins does not enter circulation, as unique as it is; it does not reach an exchange value. Devalued by his strict contemporaries, Cueto chooses to escape and disbelieve himself of what he produces, that is why he produces little and much of what he produces, as Felguerez observes, this time officiating as a privileged witness, it is an ephemeral work, which disappears in a few minutes later. having gotten out of the hands of its generator.

The desire to disappear, is this not an eminently Beckettian characteristic? The notion of work is destabilized. An artwork that works through the systematic path of subtraction, denial, lightening ... exhibits an objective tendency to disappear as an artwork. On

the way of abstraction, the artist divests himself of both the subjective and objective configurations provided by the world. It is not that the world disappears as such, what has vanished are the profiles, armor and signs of identity with which we recognized our being-in-the-world. Our mimetic habits, worked by a kind of “phenomenological reduction”, are put in parentheses. For too long art has been excessively phenomenological, being trapped, if I say it in the words of Duchamp, by a custom of light that is nothing but a “retinal” custom, subject to the impressions or traces that the object projects in the sense of sight. It is not the realm of the phenomenon that rigorous abstraction points to, but what is beyond the phenomenon. The multiform field of appearance is abandoned and the siege (if I can say it in allegorical terms) to the Kantian “thing in itself ” begins. The phenomenal as such, in its space-time emaciation, is not intended, but the noumenal. With this, the order of the senses is transcended, and art opens up to an unknown and perhaps infinite field where perhaps only the presentiment of an idea, the glimpse of a thought, the fragile splinter of a concept that never quite sinks into the organ of the skin.

In this logic of disappearance that culminates in the stripping of the image, in this systematic of subtraction that ends the empire of mimesis, I have no other recourse than to turn to the French thinker Alain Badiou. Reflecting on the effect of the artistic avant-gardes of the 20th century, Badiou points out: “We already glimpsed, with Malevich’s White on White painting, that the century is willingly iconoclastic. It does not hesitate to sacrifice the image so that the truth finally appears in the artistic gesture.

But, undoubtedly, regarding the destruction of the image, it is necessary to immediately add that the other trend continues to exist, that of subtraction,

In this order of ideas, and expanding in the sense indicated above the comment of Felguerez, it would be necessary to place Cueto as the true “pioneer” (if there is one) of the so-called generation of the Rupture. In fact, Luis-Martín Lozano almost considers him (I suppose unconsciously) as a member of that generation. Otherwise, it is not explained that he maintains that Cueto, far from being a marginalized artist, as we have all thought so far, actually had early public recognition. As it is. Loxzano claims: “… Cueto was well appreciated by critics, art historians and artists younger than him. which seeks the minimal image, the simple image-creating trait, the fugitive image. The antinomy of destruction and subtraction animates the entire process of dismissal of likeness and image. There is especially an art of rarefiedness, of obtaining the most subtle and enduring effects, not through an aggressive stance in relation to inherited forms, but through the arrangements that place those forms on the edge of emptiness, in a network of cuts and disappearances.” 18

These words fit like a glove to describe the sense of immateriality and rarefied that deprives Cueto’s work in the most aerial sector. I am referring to those works made with metal, and especially those that use thin cuts of sheet or, more strictly, wire. What the wire allows is to draw in the three dimensions of space. As they do not occupy the space, but draw the space. The weight of matter, the earth’s gravity, are nullified by these flimsy traces of the wire that produce volumes without volume... a space where the holes weigh as well as the presence itself referred to by the sculpture. This tendency towards nothingness deserves to be rescued in what exhibits a personal inclination to introversion and evasion. But above all, if we refer to the artistic configuration, because of what it has as a splintered statement, as a volatile word, as an erection in fragility. What Cueto puts into action in pieces like El nahual (iron and copper wire, with glass beads), Mask (copper wire), or Butterfly (iron and copper wire), as Badiou would say, is an art of rarefied, of lightness, of immaterialization.

Particularly notable in this sense, it seems to me, are Mask (1948, copper band; not to be confused with the one previously cited) and the works Untitled that show a trace of metallic ribbon advancing in the air on a wooden pedestal and a trace that stands in the same way as establishing scrolls in space but this time using the cut-out iron plate. 19 These pieces by Cueto perfectly illustrate that “network of cuts and disappearances”, those “forms on the edge of emptiness” of those that Badiou speaks in his X-ray of the artistic avant-garde of the 20th century.

The work without the presence of the work. The work that is hollowed out and denied by the action of the work itself. Sunk in their fragility, in their sought inconsistency, with which the basic theorem of what we know as sculpture is disarticulated, Cueto’s sheet and wire pieces are also a question, a question mark that has to do not only with his personal trajectory, but with the general economy of art of our time. What can come after this? What is the point of betting in favor of the work? In what direction should artistic creation go, if this sense is still discernible? The work, as such, is it worth it? Is it true that the work, in truth, works, as Heidegger’s strong ontology claims in The Origin of the Work of Art? Is it not better to dissipate in air, to fragment, to dislocate, to dis-work, to disappear? If Samuel Beckett appears to us as obsessed with silence, that he uses words only to better be able to get rid of them, as well as his heavy flow of meanings, Cueto seems to mend this Beckettian gesture of subtraction and nullification with the wire. Taking refuge in inconsistency, in what has been left without firmness and without substantiality, this seems to be the last way.

Not exist, but inconsistent. The Dictionary Authorities state: “Consist. To be, to be based on this or that thing ”. What Cueto suggests is that our being is essentially precarious. That does not hold. That it is not based on this, or on that, not on what is beyond.

Cueto’s will, if there is one, seems to point with a trembling of fingers towards that abundant lack that stubbornly surrounds us.

describes later. Until his death, Manuel Maples Arce and Blanca would systematically send me all the publica-tions and newspaper clippings related to the Stridentists and, as they had recommended their old friends to do the same, they ended up being impressive archives.

For a long time friends and curious fans from both

sides of the Atlantic have asked me how this enthusiasm for the work of Germán Cueto has come to me. It is such an old personal history that I have to reconstruct it from books, catalogs, and correspondence; files that are sometimes incomplete due to incessant trips abroad. A small letter that I keep, dated October 30, 1976, from Manuel Maples Arce accompanied a shipment of books that he addressed to me, specifying, after a conversation with the Belgian poet Fernand Verhesen, to whom I had expressed my in-terest in the poetry of Stridentism.

It is likely I heard a little about this Mexican movement from readings in the excellent Latin American library at the University of Austin, Texas, where I taught American literature - and from John Dos Passos, whom I did not know had translated the work of Maples Arce. This Mexican poet wrote this first letter from Belgium where he often made short stays because Blanca, his wife, was born there. At that time, back from the United States, I was the literary consultant at the Center Pompidou in Paris and since then very busy traveling to Germany and Russia for the preparation of important international exhibitions. Many letters were lost. I still have a handwritten poem that Germán List Arzubide addressed to me at the Pompidou Center and a letter from Maples Arce that, accompanying a copy of American Notebooks cor-rected by hand, with numerous typographical errors, is a copious commentary on his poem “Stanzas for a friend” where he specifies what may have been dark to me. For example, “the other German” is the “avant-garde sculptor” author of “the Canibal mask” that he

In 1980 the Pompidou Center was preparing one of its major thematic exhibitions, which was to be Realisms in International Arts and Letters. As Commissioner of Literature, he had chosen Alfonso Reyes to represent Latin America alongside his friend Paul Valéry. So I had to go to Mexico City to choose about fifteen original documents for the exhibition.

Despite several trips to Mexico, I had spent very little time in Mexico City, where I did not know anyone from the scene of letters and the arts, except Margo Glantz whom I had met a few years before.

Hosted by the Maples Arce, it is Blanca who took me to the Alfonsina Chapel where Alicia Reyes kindly guided me in my investigations. I remember Blanca driving her big limousine with authority in the traffic and alleys of Mexico. The Maples Arce house, located on Vertiz Street, was full of memories of the countries to which some embassy had taken them, and of paintings and drawings by their Stridentist friends. I think Blanca and Mireya, her daughter, considered me a bit like a provincial cousin, curious about everything. We talked at length, it is true, in the living room, under the impressive Café de Nadie by Alva de la Canal, in a warm atmosphere. Every-thing I knew about Stridentism I had learned in the excellent book by Luis Mario Schneider that Manuel sent me and that he completed with information and details. At his suggestion, few en-counters that I remember: briefly, with Alva not very talkative and a very anxious List.

Unfortu-nately, Cueto, to whom Manuel was very attached, had died five years ago. In those days, the most memorable thing was my meeting with Octavio Paz. This man, who would later be so highly praised for my book The Mexican Revolutionary Painters, welcomed me like a child who has been reprimanded since he opened his door: “You have been coming to Mexico for several years, and now is when you come to see me!” But he was very cordial and two hours later he invited me to lunch.

In 1981 Blanca informed me of the sudden death of her husband. During those years I was re-quired in Russia and later in Poland. It was for the organi-

zation of an exhibition in Warsaw that in 1983 or 1984, I went to ask Michel Seuphor about Cercle et Carré, this international group of abstract painters and sculptors from 1929-1930 of which Cueto was an active member. …Seuphor spoke to me very affectionately about Cueto. It was then that I became interested in the particular history of the Mexican sculptor during his Parisian years. I have addressed it in several books and catalogs from Los pintores revolucionarias Mexicanos (1985) to the very recent El fin de las vanguardias. I will not come back here and I will keep the memories.

As an independent curator and by then based in Italy, a proposal from Pontus Hulten and Ger-mano Celant associated me indefinitely with them to provide in Venice the most colossal of world futurism exhibitions according to the wish of the Fiat sponsors. In The Mexican Revolutionary Painters, it is the Stridentism chapter, and particularly the reproductions of Cueto’s masks, that most surprised. That is why I wanted to make it a main room in the future exhibition at Palazzo Grassi. In 1985, for an Italian mandate, I returned to Mexico to collect borrowed works to exhibit in Venice. I had not foreseen that Stridentism was then unknown in Mexican museums. The Po-sada and the Tehuana

by Cueto, of which Luis Cardoza y Aragón had pointed out to me their existence in the reserves of the Museum of Modern Art, were too late for my purpose. Thanks to Blanca who lent her Café de Nadie and many more, I was able to get in touch with the families that own works by Stridentist artists; in addition to List Arzubide who is still alive, I was able to visit the families of Alva de la Canal, Fernando Leal, the Revueltas brothers and others that I, unfortunately do not remember. I also remember being briefly scolded by Raquel Tibol because she said, that I wanted to show a completely forgotten Mexican movement among the “fascists”!

I was traveling thanks to a Pemex truck that my old friend Orlando de la Rosa lent me! Cueto was a particular case. On my first visit I had to go with Blanca since the artist’s widow (who had written and sent me documents in 1982), María Galán de Cueto, did not receive strangers in her house for fear of thieves. On my subsequent visits, she received me kindly, but I was taken aback because she hid small sculptures under the furniture and even a stone in the refrigerator. In some cases she admitted that she had forgotten where they were. She offered to show me Cueto’s workshop. It was ac-

cessed by going around the patio where there was a limousine with flat tires. Nothing had changed since the artist’s departure: works in progress, of plaster, sheet, wire, various tools, boxes ... all this covered by ten years of dust and it was evident that the old woman considered this place to be untouchable. It was moving and sad. What to do? I have writ-ten an official letter to the Secretariat of Culture of Mexico requesting help of any kind for the pro-tection of the widow and the artist’s work. No response yet.

Back in Europe, I received a long and regrettable letter from María Galan de Cueto dated Octo-ber 30th, 1985 about a “cardboard box” entrusted to the French Embassy in Mexico two months earlier.

There they told her that she could send whatever she wanted for the diplomatic bag. “I am terribly mortified by the bad luck of sending the material referring to my husband German Cueto ...”. She explained to me that this box contained various documents and, above all, original photographs of which she did not have a copy. She thought they would send the box to the Cen-ter Pompidou. A postscript in another ink explains the mystery: “Mrs. Silvete from the French Embassy in Mexico sent the package through the diplomatic bag to the Venice Biennale”. The error then comes from an official who, hearing about art and Venice, he thought it would be easi-er to send directly through the diplomatic bag to the Venice Biennale. The Palazzo Grassi has nothing to do with the Biennale, which is a large contemporary art fair at the other end of the city and another time of the year. This precious sum of irreplaceable documents had no chance of reaching me and was hopelessly lost in the inevitable rush of a fair.

A small woodcut by Leopoldo Mandez loaned to INBA was enough to give a very official air to all the loans from Mexico, and the young Cristina Gálvez was commissioned to transport every-thing to Palazzo Grassi in 1986. About forty paintings, sculptures and drawings without counting the books and magazines, remind me of the Futurism-Futurismi catalog where the cannibal mask laughs at full page near Café de Nadie. In addition to the famous List Arzubide mask, Maria Galan de Cueto had also lent the innovative Monument to the Revolution Project that attracted connoisseurs. The most flattering thing for the Mexican room located in an obligatory step of the vast exhibition is that it was

chosen by televisions as an unknown, colorful and unexpected place to film the interviews. It was a return of Stridentism to the international scene that justified the half dozen pages that I had published in New York in Artforum.

The Stridentists were not yet sufficiently present in museums and in art history to be thought about. In 1992 at the Pompidou Center, which was preparing an Art of Latin America exhibition, the organizers belatedly discovered this absence. As Muralism could not be presented material-ly, I was asked to quickly write an article on absent Stridentism illustrated by three small engrav-ings by Alva de la Canal. Let us comfort ourselves by saying in French that it is better than noth-ing.

Over the years, many Mexican friends, from Octavio Paz to Helen Escobedo, have told me about Cueto. Manuel Felguerez told me that when he studied sculpture, the official media pre-ferred figurative artists, in the recognized Mexican tradition.

When Mercedes Iturbe invited me to a presentation of my book at the Centro Cultural México in Paris in 1985, to my comment that Mexican masks carried an ancient and popular tradition in the country, Juan Soriano added that they were also linked to universal theatricality. I have not forgotten this reflection.

In 1997 Martín Chirino, who directed the Atlantic Center for Modern Art in Las Palmas, had given me the freedom to create an exhibition of sculpture forged in the 20th century on all continents: Forging the space. An old colonial palace with several floors converted into a museum, the build-ing and its garden offered an exceptional variety of volumes and spaces, and the proximity of the port allowed the arrival of works of weight and monumental dimensions.

A spacious basement equipped to withstand heavy loads could accommodate a multi-ton sculpture by Richard Serra and the thick iron silhouettes of the Chinese Chen Ting-Che. Thanks to the climate, as in the Canary Islands, the gardens and the general terrace could be used so that the wind animated the mobiles of Alexandre Calder or Geneviève Claisse.

Among the celebrity aura of Pablo Picas-so, among the frenzied machines of Jean Tinguely, among the dislocated African creatures of the Dakpogan brothers, were we not going to forget Germán Cueto, would he not be lost in a large catalog of more than five hundred pages? It was only noticeable in him be-

cause, with half a dozen sculptures of various techniques, he was one of the best represented artists in terms of number of works.They had been set up on a dais at an angle, which set it off a bit and attracted the attention of visitors. It is the Tahuana provided by the Museum of Modern Art of México that filled the cover of the catalog in which he was the only artist who solely benefited from a dozen pages entitled Cueto and the Invention of Modern Sculpture in Latin America. Javier Cueto Ga-lán, who had accompanied the sculptures of his father and a sheet mask belonging to his sister, Mireya Cueto, said he was very pleasantly surprised. Under the same conditions these sculp-tures will go with the entire exhibition to the I.V.A.M. from Valencia, and finally in France at the Museum of Fine Arts in Calais.

It was also in the north of France that I was able to present again, Germán Cueto and finally in a Mexican context. I met director Joëlle Pijaudier-Cabot when I went to the Lille Métropole Museum of Modern Art in Villeneuve d’Ascq to request a major loan of Cubist paintings in Century City, the opening of the Tate Modern in London in March 2001. A year later Next he asked me to design an exhibition of Mexican and European artists who have worked in Mexico. It would be Mexico-Europe-1910-1960, back and forth in 2004, a large company that needed two long stays in Mexi-co in 2003 to visit artists, collectors and museum institutions throughout the country. Once again, their generous reception was crucial, especially that of Javier Cueto Galán, who received me at his home in Cuernavaca, where all of his father’s works had been transferred after his mother’s death. I worked there for days, accumulating notes in quantity without really knowing that they would be so useful to me to write the book Germán Cueto.

The loans from Mexico were not enough to show the artistic swing. It was also necessary to resort to various museums in Europe and the United States. We had to negotiate with the com-panies we needed, organizing work that was effectively supervised by Joëlle Pijaudier-Cabot. In total we would have more than three hundred paintings, sculptures, drawings, engravings, pho-tographs, not counting the dozens of old books, magazines and printed documents; the museum had been completely emptied to house this. Among the strong points, some thirty sculptures and drawings by Germán Cueto, a section for Jean Charlot that the French

overlooked, and above all, near a room of the great mural painters, for the first time, authentic frescoes with their walls; a gesture, as a fraternal bet of Walter Boelsterly, who had organized the technical modalities of such weight and fragility that a special plane for the transport and a team of experienced Mexi-can workers for the assembly had been needed. Lola Cueto also aroused a particular curiosity because we were in a spinning and weaving region. The public seemed as happy as I was and the press has commented extensively on Mexico-Europe.

Since the Forging the space exhibition, the good eye of friend Juan Manuel Bonet had been in-terested in Cueto’s sculpture. As director of the Museo Nacional Reina Sofía in Madrid, he asked me to do a retrospective of the Mexican artist and to choose two works that he would buy for the museum. I did not hesitate much: the stone Napoleon of the Circle and Square period and the Model for the Monument to the Revolution that I had previously shown in Venice and that had reappeared in 1999 in Spain in Pontevedra in Identidada e Volume, 1910-1950, a good exhibition of fifteen Mexican sculptors. Juan Manuel is a man of his word: both works are exhibited in the best museum in Spain. At the same time, the iron sculpture of the Japanese dancer Miki Ito had been retained by Joëlle Pijaudier-Cabot. It does not appear in the Mexico-Europe catalog be-cause it needed a restoration near the base, but the photos of the exhibition show that it was indeed included. Later, it joined the collections of the Lille Métropole Museum, Villeneuve d’Ascq, a judicious acquisition for a museum where Cueto will join Jacques Lipchitz, Fernand Léger, Henri Laurens and other friends from his Parisian years.

The book that would serve as the catalog for the Madrid exhibition was written in 2003.

I added three sketches by Cueto to show the extent of his passion for theatricality (as Soriano had said) and the testimonies of his friends; I should have added Margarita Nelken. The curious letter from Mexico to Maurice Nadeau was included at the suggestion of Juan Manuel. The book was edited in 2004 by RM for the 2005 exhibition.

Meanwhile, Juan Manuel had been replaced by a much more orthodox director. I wanted a fairly cheerful exhibition because Cueto is not a tragic artist or an austere intellectual. He was a dedicated man in a daily life where he knows how to laugh and breathe a calm optimism, without forgetting the theatricality. When I had the walls painted in red and then green, yellow and then blue, the director protested raising her arms to the sky: It is im-possible, it is against custom! I also transmitted the music of Silvestre Revueltas in the exhibition, despite the habits that are not always good. Finally, everyone was satisfied when everything was ready. Javier Cueto Galán, also speaking on behalf of Mireya Cueto, expressed his satisfaction to everyone and the visitors did not seem to regret the colorful walls and the sounds of discreet and joyful music.

(As the information provided by Germán Cueto’s book-catalog has been repeated on occasions since its publication, I point out here some small errors despite the care of Editorial RM. A typo-graphical error in the Spanish transcription made my 1927 inaccurate 1922 as date of execution of Sacco and Vanzetti. However, there is something for which I am solely responsible, page 38: María Blanchard probably could not introduce Juan Gris to Cueto since the Spanish painter very ill since the beginning of the year 1927, died on May 11. In the excerpt taken from the Federico Silva Museum catalog in 2006, readers probably corrected for themselves, page 69, a Cueto who became a “Mexican writer” rather than a “Mexican sculptor”).

In the fall of 2005, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that a major exhibition by Germáno Cueto was finally opening in Mexico at the Federico Silva Museum in San Luis Potosí and that Editorial RM was lending my Círcule and Square chapter for the

catalog. Shortly afterwards, I received an invitation from Regina Boelsterly Urrutia, director of said Museum, for my wife and I to give a lec-ture in January 2006. A fraternal reception in a museum in a city where we did not know that from now on we would return often . It was a pleasure to discover in the exhibition that among the loans from different museums and collectors in Mexico, many of the high-quality works that were missing in my presentations of the artist in Europe belonged to Ysabel Galán, a cousin of Javier that I had never done before. but vague allusions, and of which I never knew at that time. I saw her for the first time, with great pleasure, at the San Luis Potosí exhibition and since then and for years, we have shared many things and a great friendship.

Another surprise shortly after, was the announcement that another German Cueto exhibition would take place in Mexico City at the Carrillo Gil Museum in the fall of 2006, coordinated by my friends Ester Echeverría and Sylvia Navarrete who had helped me a few years before for Mexi-co- Europe. They invited me to the public debate that was going to close the exhibition. This one did not repeat the one at the Federico Silva Museum, although this time, fortunately, there were essential loans from Javier and Ysabel.

Happily reunited for this retrospective. Raquel Tibol had been curiously invited to the debate table, who seemed to have come only to criticize the exhibi-tion and the work of the two curators. I don’t think she remembered drastically rejecting me twen-ty years ago, but she still attacked me as a ‘stranger’ who cannot know certain things ... Luckily, her neighbor, Evodio Escalante, a solid art historian, sent her harshly to his native Argentina. The furtive departure of the lady marked the return of civility and good humor to a friendly drink bring-ing together the debaters and the public.

Finally, with these two great exhibitions that marked a recognition in his country, German Cueto once again occupied his place among the great sculptors of the 20th century.
