L’etrusca Tarkna (in latino Tarquinii) era situata a circa dieci chilometri dalla costa, dove era il suo porto principale, Gravisca, potente emporio del Mediterraneo. L’abitato etrusco sorse e si sviluppò in una felice posizione geografica da cui dominava la sottostante vallata del Marta, emissario del lago di Bolsena; il corso d’acqua, oltre ad essere allora un fiume navigabile dal mare fino alla città, per secoli garantì agevoli contatti con il retroterra e molto contribuì alla fioritura ed all’affermazione politica ed economica della città. Pian di Civita, questo è il nome del pianoro da cui, per secoli, la potente città etrusca fu protagonista delle vicende politiche del Mediterraneo, è diviso dalla costa dal lungo e parallelo colle dei Monterozzi, sede delle necropoli storiche. Le attestazioni archeologiche più antiche del sito urbano risalgono all’età del Bronzo finale (XII secolo a.C.), anche se solo a partire dall’VIII secolo a.C., con l’incrementarsi dei contatti con il mondo greco e con la trasmissione di nuove tecnologie e di nuovi modelli culturali, si accentua quel processo di formazione urbana che porterà Tarquinia ad essere ritenuta "grande e fiorente" (Dionigi Alicarnasso) e “la più ricca d'Etruria" (Cicerone). Nel VI e nei primi decenni del V sec. a.C. Tarquinia è al suo apogeo urbano; a questo corrisponde un’espansione che porterà la città a dominare su un territorio che giunge sino al lago di Bolsena. E’ il momento di massima potenza della città e questi decenni di grande splendore economico e politico sono testimoniati in maniera evidente dallo sviluppo della necropoli. Fra la fine del V e gli inizi del IV secolo a.C. viene edificata l'imponente cinta fortificata lunga circa 8 km, che delimita una superficie di 135 ettari, per difendere la città dai Celti che scendevano dal Nord e da Roma che iniziava la sua espansione da Sud. Le ostilità fra Tarquinia, alla testa della lega delle città etrusche, e Roma sfociano in un conflitto tra il 358 ed il 351 a.C. che si conclude con una tregua di 40 anni; nel 308 a.C. dopo un nuovo scontro armato, la tregua viene rinnovata per un periodo di ulteriori 40 anni. Nel corso della prima metà del III sec. a.C. la città viene definitivamente sconfitta da Roma che occupa la fascia costiera. Le due città mantengono comunque buoni rapporti infatti Livio ricorda come Tarquinia, nel 205 a.C., abbia fornito a Scipione il lino per le vele delle navi usate nella spedizione africana in occasione della seconda guerra punica. Nel 181 a.C., sul sito dell'antico porto, Roma fondò Gravisca, una colonia marittima. Dopo il 90 a.C. anche Tarquinia ricevette il diritto di cittadinanza romana e diventò un municipio retto da un collegio di quattro magistrati. Nel tardo periodo imperiale la decadenza divenne inarrestabile e nell'alto medioevo il pianoro della città si spopolò finché, nell'VIII sec. d.C., la sede episcopale fu spostata nella vicina Corneto e la Civita fu definitivamente abbandonata.

The History The Etruscan city of Tarkna (Tarquinii in Latin) was situated about ten kilometres from the coast where its main port, Gravisca lay - Gravisca being an emporium of the Mediterranean Sea. The Etruscan inhabitants developed and prospered in an ideal geographical location which dominated the underlying Marta river valley, an effluent of Bolsena Lake. For centuries, the flow of the river, in addition to being navigable from the sea to the city, guaranteed contact with those living inland and greatly contributed to the flourishing economy, afferming Tarkna as a prominent political power. “Pian di Civita” (The valley flatlands of the city) is the name of the surrounding plains where, for centuries, the renowned Etruscan city played a dominant role in the political events in the Mediterranean. The plains are bordered on one side by the sea coast and on the other by the range of rolling hills of Monterozzi, which run parallel to the sea and cradle the historical necropolis. The earliest archaeological remains of urban life can be traced back to the late Bronze Age (12th century B.C.) However, beginning in the 8th century B.C., with increased contact with the Grecian world and the onset of new technology and innovative cultural models, the process of urbanization was accentuated, elevating Tarquina to the point of being considered “Great and Flourishing” by Dionigi Alicarnaso and “the Richest of Etruria” by Cicerone. During the 6th century B.C. and into the first decade of the 5th century, Tarquina reached its climax in terms of urbanization. This corresponds to a marked territorial expansion wherein Tarquinia dominated the lands as far as Bolsena Lake. This decade represents the apex of the Etruscan city whereby Tarquinia splendored in all its glory - both politically and economically - the evidence of which can be verified in the development of the Necropolis. Between the 5th and the beginning of the 4th century B.C. great imposing walls, running about 8km in length, began to be constructed, enclosing an area of about 135 hectars in order to defend the city against the Celtics in their descent from the North and from Rome as they began their expansion southward. The growing hostility between Tarquinia, who presided over the league of Etruscan cities, and Rome erupted in fighting between 358 and 351 B.C. ending with a 40 year truce. In 308 B.C. the squirmishes began a new and an ulterior 40 year truce was declared. During the first half of the 3rd century B.C. Tarquinia was finally defeated

by Rome, who then occupied the coastlines. The two cities maintained a good relationship and in fact, Livio wrote how, in 205 B.C., Tarquinia furnished the linen to make the sails for Scipione’s ships which were used in the African expedition during the Second Punic War. In 181 B.C. at the site of the ancient Etruscan port of Gravisca, Rome founded a maritime colony. After 90 B.C. the former Etruscans acquired the right to become Roman citizens and Tarquinia became a Roman municipality governed by a college of four magistrates. During the latter years of the Roman Empire, decline became relentless and at the height of the Middle Ages, the plains of the city were slowly abandoned. In the 8th century A.D. the seat of the Church was transferred near Corneto and the Civita was then completely forsaken.

L'attuale Tarquinia, dal momento della sua formazione fino allo scorso secolo, fu chiamata Corneto; dal 1872 Corneto-Tarquinia e dal 1922 Tarquinia. Il nome sembra derivare dalla presenza di piante di corniolo. La città viene citata in uno documento (sec. VIII) dell’abbazia di Farfa. Altra tradizione vuole il nome derivato dal mitico re Corito, suo fondatore e progenitore di Enea. Le origini della città sono tuttora imprecisabili. Per Corneto lo sviluppo urbano non fu né conseguenza né causa di un drastico o traumatico abbandono della vecchia Tarquinia: anzi le fonti storiche documentano che almeno fino al sec. XIV i due centri coesisterono, anche se per importanza Tarquinia, che fu sede vescovile dal sec. IV, andava progressivamente cedendo il passo a Corneto: il primo nucleo si sviluppò sullo sperone di castello (secc. VI-VII) in luogo di una probabile preesistenza romana. Si vuole che qui, intorno a una torre preesistente, si aggregasse un palazzo fortificato, in cui, nel 1080, la contessa Matilde di Canossa tenne un placito con poteri pontifici; si tratterebbe del luogo dove attualmente sorge la chiesa di S. Maria, detta, appunto, in castello e che, sembra, abbia sostituito una precedente S. Maria ad rupes, probabile cappella palatina. A questo iniziale castrum si aggregò, in breve tempo, un suburbio che si intensificò a tal punto da determinare l'esigenza (secc. IX- X), dell'edificazione di una cinta muraria a sua protezione. Il sistema fortificatorio, ancora conservato a tratti, nel suo perimetro originario escludeva la parte orientale dell'attuale borgo (castro novo), che si sviluppò tra i secc. XIII e XIV. Il tracciato, quindi, superato castello, seguiva il percorso attuale fino alla piazza Cavour, piegando per corso Vittorio Emanuele Il e proseguendo per via Dante Alighieri, fino alla scoscesa del belvedere. Divenuta civitas nel sec. XI (bolla di Sergio IV), la città, per altro, già gravitava nell'orbita del Patrimonio di S. Pietro fin dal 787.

L'ascesa politica ed economica della città si manifestò (sec. XII) nei trattati commerciali stipulati con Pisa, Genova e Venezia, grazie alla vicinanza del mare e dei fiumi Marta e Mignone, allora navigabili e sulle cui foci esistevano importanti approdi. Dalla metà del sec. XII Corneto fu libero Comune; pertanto divenne antagonista di Tuscania e Viterbo, svantaggiate in quanto ubicate nell’entroterra. Nel sec. XIII la città consolidò il proprio stato giuridico legandosi sempre più a Roma, che, infatti, si proponeva come migliore acquirente della sua ricca produzione frumentaria, per la quale Corneto era nota come horreum urbis. Mutamenti determinanti iniziarono tra i secc. XIV e XV, quando la città fu coinvolta nelle lotte tra papato e impero. Nel 1328 M. Vitelleschi, impadronitosi del potere, con l’intento di creare una Signoria, non realizzò il suo progetto perché rimase ucciso in una rivolta popolare scoppiata dopo solo due anni. Tra i secc. XV e XVI iniziò una fase di costante decrescita, coincidente, tra l’altro, con il consolidamento del potere dei Vitelleschi e con la progressiva ingerenza della Chiesa, testimoniata dall’assedio e il saccheggio della città (1355), compiuti dalle truppe pontificie guidate da E. Albornoz e da G. Orsini. Nel 1435 Eugenio IV, elevando Corneto a sede vescovile, diede il titolo a SS. Maria e Margherita, che il vescovo B. Vitelleschi, ristrutturò completamente per ricavarvi una cappella di famiglia. Nel 1439 con il restauro del torrione di Matilde, venne costruita una porta fortificata a baionetta, che escluse castello dall'area urbana, determinandone il rapido degrado. Tra la fine del sec. XV e l'inizio del sec. XVI due gravi pestilenze ridussero di due terzi la popolazione. Iniziò così un periodo di decadenza che investì anche il patrimonio edilizio. Nel sec. XVIII ci furono alcuni tentativi di risanare l'economia cornetana. Tra questi, notevoli gli interventi al porto (Clemente XlI, 1738-48); in seguito Pio VII realizzò degli impianti per l'estrazione del sale (1802). Tra la fine del sec. XVIII e gli inizi del XIX la città venne, per due volte, occupata dalle truppe francesi: prima da quelle rivoluzionarie e, quindi, da quelle napoleoniche. Nel 1815 tornò allo Stato Pontificio fino al 1870, quando venne annessa al Regno d'Italia. Le vicende successive sono legate allo sviluppo dello stato italiano.

INTRODUZIONE INTRO The actual city of Tarquinia, from the time it was founded until the end of the last century was known as Corneto.

From 1872 it was referred to as Corneto-Tarquinia from 1922 as simply, “Tarquinia”. The origins of the name seem to stem from the abundant presence of a native plant known as corniolo or cornel (Corgnitum). References to the city of Corneto were cited in a text dating from the 8th century A.D. found in the Abby of Farfa. Other ancient traditions suggest that the name is derived from the mythical King Corito who was the founding father of Aeneas. Even today, the precise origins of the city have not yet been determined. The urban development of Corneto was neither the consequence of a drastic nor traumatic abbandonment of the ancient city of Tarquinia. On the contrary, historical sources cite that at least until the 4th century A.D., the two urban centers co-existed. Even though Tarquinia was considered more important, being the seat of the Diocese until the 4th century, it progressively gave way to the rise of Corneto. The first nucleus developed around the buttress of the Castle (6th-7th century), probably built on the ruins of a pre-existing Roman site. It was here that a fortified palace was constructed around a pre-existing tower and in 1080 the countess, Matilda of Canossa passed judgement there, wielding pontific power. This site is where the present day Church of Saint Mary lies and it appears to have substituted a pre-existing Santa Maria ad rupes which was probably a palatine chapel. Shortly after the initial establishment of the castle, a small suburb began to grow quickly, intensifing to such an extent that the inhabitants felt the necessity to construct a fortified wall surrounding the castle settlement for protection (9th-10th century). Remains of the wall can still be seen at various points along the former perimeter, which excluded the eastern part of the present day borgo (Castro Novo) and was further developed between the 13th and 14th centuries. Traces of the original wall, after having surrounded the castle, continued towards what is now Piazza Cavour, today, street of Vittorio Emanuele II and heading towards the road known as Alberata Dante Alighieri, up to the overlook, Belvedere. Corneto became a “Civitas” in the 11th century (as cited in an official document of Pope Sergio IV) but had previously already gravitated towards the realm considered Patrimony of Saint Peter’s since the end of 787. The rise of Corneto to becoming a political and economic power manifested itself in the 12th century as documented in stipulated trade agreements with Pisa, Genova and Venice; this was due to the city’s ideal location near the sea and the Marta and Mignone rivers, which were navigable and along which were situated many important ports and harbours. By the middle of the 12th century Corneto was a free municipality and for this reason became a viable rival of Tuscania and Viterbo which were limited by their inland locations. In the 13th century the city consolidated its juridical status binding itself ever more closely to Rome. In fact, Rome was considered their greatest purchaser of grains and cereals, for which Corneto was known as the horreum urbis (the Granary of Rome). Significant changes began to occur between the14th and 15th centuries when the city became involved in the struggles between Rome and the Papacy. In 1328 M. Vitelleschi came into power with the intention of creating an independent dominion. However his efforts were thwarted due to a popular revolt after only two years. Between the 15th and 16th centuries, the population began to dwindle consistently. This coincided with the consolidation of power obtained by the Vitelleschi family and with the continuous meddling of the Church which resulted in a seige and looting of the city in 1355. The papal troops responsible for the destruction were led by E. Albornoz and G. Orsini. In 1435 Pope Eugenio IV, once again elevated Corneto to becoming the seat of the diocese or bishopric, christening the borgo - Saints Maria and Margherita. The presiding Bishop B. Vitelleschi then completely restructured the church in order to create a family chapel. In 1439, after the Tower of Matilda had been restored, a gateway or large door, fortified by a bayonet construction technique, was built. This addition, however, excluded the castle from the urban area and resulted in a rapid decline of the borgo. Between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th, Corneto suffered the onslaught of two grave pestilences which reduced the population by one third. This marked the beginning of a long period of decadence that also took its toll on the architectural patrimony of the city. In the 18th century there were some attempts made to rebuild the Cornetan economy.

Among these was a noteable contribution made by Pope Clemente XII to elaborate the port from 1738-48 and thereafter, Pope Pio VII was able to install systems for extracting salt from the sea. At the end of the 18th century and again at the beginning of the 19th, the city was twice occupied by French troops - first by the revolutionists and then

by Napoleon’s forces. In 1815 Corneto returned under the reign of the Church as a Papal State and remained so until 1870 when it was annexed by the Reign of Italy. The history of Corneto then became intricately linked with the development of Italy as a country.

Presepe Vivente Il centro storico di Tarquinia si trasforma in un grande palcoscenico all’aperto. Oltre 200 comparse, in costume d’epoca, prendono parte all’evento che coinvolge tutta la città. Realizzato in due dei quartieri più antichi del centro storico, quello di San Martino e San Giacomo, l’antico Terziere del Poggio, è basato su una ricostruzione degli ambienti e delle situazioni del I secolo d.C. in Israele. Tarquinia diventa una piccola Betlemme. Banchi di legno, paglia, iuta e stoffe costituiscono gli elementi per la creazione di situazioni tipiche di quel tempo: il mercato delle merci e del bestiame, la vendita degli schiavi, il censimento, la locanda. Presso Campo Cialdi inoltre viene ricreato un grande accampamento romano con tende, cavalli, bighe, legionari in allenamento. Il giorno dell’Epifania, il 6 gennaio, i tre magi, accompagnati da tre veri cammelli, raggiungono la location del Presepe Vivente, attraversando la città con una grande corteo al quale partecipano tutte le comparse.

Natale a Tarquinia Dall’8 dicembre le luminarie inziano ad accendersi per le vie del paese, i centri commerciali si vestono a festa, si promuovono iniziative per grandi e bambini: apertura della Casa di Babbo Natale e trenino, castagne e vin brulé per i grandi. Tradizionale allestimento del percorso presepistico a cura degli Amici del Presepe.

Presepe Vivente (The Nativity Scene “LIVE”) Tarquinia’s historical center comes alive with the celebration of the coming of christ. Over 200 stand-ins dressed in period costume parade the cobblestone streets reenacting the miraculous event. The event is exhibited in two of the oldest parts of town, San Martino, San Giovanni, the old ‘Terziere del Poggio. Tarquinia is transformed into a first century AD scene of little Bethlehem, Israel with wooden benches, straw, jute, wooden carriages, open markets of goods and livestock, the slave market, the census, antique Inns and all the traditional accouterments of a time past. At Campo Cialdi there is a re-created scene of a Roman Legions encampment made of large tents, chariots, war horses and soldiers practicing for battle.

On January 6th, the Epiphany, citizens dressed as the three kings accompanied by live camels, mules and a court of period costume stand-ins parade the streets arriving at the manger where the new born Jesus lays in swaddling.

Natale a Tarquinia (Christmas in Tarquinia) On the 8th of December the streets are illuminated with christmas lights, the shopping malls festively decorated with christmas cheer an there are several activities for children as well as for the adults: Santa Claus’s House and train, chestnuts and mulled wine for adults.

Gennaio January Epifania Per i bambini è il giorno dell’arrivo della Befana e proprio ai bambini Tarquinia dedica una giornata all’insegna del divertimento: Il volo della Befana dal campanile del Palazzo Comunale è preceduto dalla Maratonina. La festa si conclude con la distribuzione di caramelle e dolcetti per tutti.

(Epiphany) The Befana is the day before the Epiphany (5th of January). It is a fun day for kids with games and a flight of the Befana from the Bell Tower of City Hall.

The festival ends with cakes and sweets for everyone.

Febbraio February Sant’Antonio Abate e Carnevale Tarquinia preserva ancora la tradizione dei festeggiamenti dedicati a Sant’Antonio Abate, protettore contro le epidemie e degli animali in genere. La sfilata degli animali guidati dai butteri segna anche l’inizio del Carnevale, che Tarquinia festeggia in tre date, con l’allestimento di carri allegorici per le vie della cittadina con musiche e in un clima gaio e spensierato.

(Sant’Antonio and Carnival) Tarquinia still perserves the tradition of this celebration, dedicated to Sant’Antonio Abate. There is a parade of animals led by ‘Butteri’, our local cowboys and marks the beginning of Carnival, which Tarquinia celebrates for 3 days with parades of allegorically decorated floats, live music and a cheerful and carefree atmosphere at all the local bars and cafés.

EVENTI EVENTS PRIMAVERA SPRING Pasqua Easter Processione del Cristo Risorto La domenica di Pasqua si celebra la Processione del “Cristo che corre”. Per le vie della città viene trasportata a passo spedito, quasi di corsa e tra due ali di folla, una pregiata statua del Cristo Risorto. La Statua fu commissionata dalla Corporazione dei Falegnami. Si narra che per ricordare la Risurrezione, venne dato l’incarico ad uno scultore che stava scontando una pena a vita, di scolpire nel legno un Cristo Risorto, superiore in bellezza a quanti già ne esistevano. Narra ancora la leggenda che, per impedire all’artista di fare, in seguito, una nuova Statua identica a quella scolpita o anche più bella, venisse spietatamente accecato. Apre la Processione la squadra degli Sparatori, i fucili dei quali sono caricati a salve con coriandoli. Una componente originale di questa processione è quella dei portatori dei Tronchi, delle grandi Croci con ghirlanda. Si tratta di croci il cui peso si aggira dai settantacinque ai novantacinque chili.

Di notevole altezza (la più grande raggiunge circa 5 metri) il loro trasporto richiede una notevole abilità e forza per non essere sbilanciati durante il trasporto. E’ una dimostrazione di forza, di abilità e di resistenza.

Processione del Cristo Risorto (Procession of Christ’s Resurrection) On Easter Sunday the procession of "Christ’s Resurrection” is celebrated. A statue of the resurrected Christ is paraded through the crowded streets of Tarquinia. The statue was commissioned by the Carpenters Guild. The task was given to a sculptor who was serving a life sentence in prison. His task was to create a wooden sculpture of a resurrected Christ, more beautiful than any seen before. Legend has it, that after the realization of the statue, the sculptor was blinded to prevent him from creating any like statues. The procession is opened by the “Sparatori” team, shooting confetti; followed by the giant crosses made from tree trunks. It takes considerable skill and months of training of the selected trunk carriers for the crosses can be up to 5 meters (16 ft) tall and weigh from 70 to 90 kilos (154 to198 lbs) each. It’s a show of strength, skill and endurance and considered a great honor amongst the citizens of Tarquinia. The Statue is housed in the church ‘San Giuseppe’. The church is only open on one day a year, Easter Sunday, when the statue is paraded around the town for the celebration then returns to its berth where it remains until the next Easter Sunday.

Maggio May La Merca In località Roccaccia, si rinnova ogni anno la tradizionale marcatura delle mandrie che vivono allo stato brado nelle vaste tenute dell’Università Agraria. L'evento permette di riscoprire usi e costumi dei "butteri" maremmani che, in passato, avevano l’arduo compito di catturare e domare il bestiame. In tale occasione si può assistere a gare equestri e prove di abilità a cavallo, oppure degustare prodotti e vini locali.

La Merca In the zone called “la Roccaccia”, is an annual event of marking the wild livestock which graze the vast terrain of the ‘Università Agraria’. The event is an exposition of various events; the marking of the wild herds, equestrian competitions, stands selling tools and products for livestock, as well as a gastronomic display of local wine and products ‘Maremmano’.

Mostra Mercato Macchine Agricole Presso Tarquinia Lido, su un’area di 50.000 mq, viene presentata la produzione di oltre 250 imprese industriali e commerciali che producono e vendono trattori, attrezzature specifiche per movimento terra, impianto di colture, raccolta, stoccaggio e confezione dei prodotti agricoli, servizi informatici e finanziari, artigianato. In contemporanea con la Mostra Mercato Macchine Agricole, si svolge all’interno del centro storico la tradizionale Fiera di Tarquinia.

Mostra Mercato Macchine Agricole (Exhibition of Agricultural Machinery) At Tarquinia Lido, in an area of 50,000 m2, is a show of over 250 industrial and commercial enterprises that manufacture agricultural machinery; tractors, earthmoving equipment, crop propagation, harvesting, storage and packaging, services and promotion of artisanal products. In conjunction with the Agricultural Machinery Exhibition, is the May Fair of Tarquinia in the historical center where hundreds of vendors participate in an open market composed of local products and goods.

Il percorso enogastronomico, che vede coinvolte le cantine produttrici dell’antica Dodecapoli etrusca, si snoda lungo le vie del centro storico e degustazioni guidate da sommelier di fama internazionale, accompagnano la manifestazione per tutta la sua durata. Musica dal vivo, eventi correlati e monumenti visitabili fino a tarda notte.

“DiVino Etrusco” Is the combination of wine and culture Tarquinese, called the “Divine Etruscan”. It’s a gastronomic journey, involving the wineries of the ancient Etruscan Dodecapoli (the 12 Etruscan cities). The gastronomic events winds through the old streets of Tarquinia’s historical center. Wine tastings are accompanied by an international sommelier through out the event.

LE TOMBE DIPINTE Necropoli Etrusca

Le tombe dipinte rappresentano un aspetto peculiare della cultura artistica etrusca, unico esempio della pittura parietale antica, conosciuta attraverso la testimonianza delle fonti. I dipinti presenti all’interno delle tombe di Tarquinia sono l’unico esempio coevo, contemporaneo alla grande pittura greca, pervenuto fino a noi. Attualmente si è a conoscenza di circa 200 tombe etrusche con pitture parietali e 140 si trovano a Tarquinia. Soltanto Tarquinia ci offre dunque una pinacoteca sotterranea databile dall’età Orientalizzante (fine sec. VII a.C.) sino alla fine dell’età repubblicana romana (metà I secolo a.C.), che rivela come in questa città esistesse una fiorente ed ininterrotta tradizione pittorica. Questo enorme patrimonio non solo artistico ma anche storico rappresenta uno spaccato sulla vita quotidiana degli Etruschi ed è stato inserito dal 2004 dall’Unesco nel Patrimonio Mondiale dell’Umanità. La Necropoli è situata su un pianoro, denominato Monterozzi per la presenza di tumuli in forma di piccoli monticelli di terra, che si sviluppa parallelamente alla costa tirrenica per una lunghezza di sei chilometri e una larghezza di circa tre chilometri. Il colle è diviso in varie località: Calvario, Primi Archi, Secondi Archi, area Scataglini, Doganaccia. Nella porzione di Necropoli aperta al pubblico, in località Calvario, sono attualmente visitabili 19 ipogei. Inoltre cinque tra gli ipogei più conosciuti sono aperti straordinariamente e accessibili con visite guidate, grazie alla collaborazione tra la Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici per l’Etruria Meridionale ed il Comune di Tarquinia e sono: la tomba delle Pantere, la tomba dei Tori, la tomba degli Auguri, la tomba del Barone, e il fondo Scataglini.

THE PAINTED TOMBS The Etruscan Necropolis The painted tombs represent an extraordinary aspect of the artistic Etruscan culture an unique iexample of ancient Etruscan life. The paintings presented within the tombs in Tarquinia are the only live representations of ancient contemporary life, along with those of the great paintings of Greece, both of which have survived until modern day. To date, there are about 200 known Etruscan tombs with wall frescos and 140 of them are found in Tarquinia. However, only Tarquinia can offer an underground art gallery dated from the Orientalizing Period (end of the 7th century B.C.) through the era of the Roman Republic (mid 1st century B.C.) revealing the existence of a flourishing and uninterrupted painting tradition. This enormous patrimony which is not only artistic but also historic, allows us a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of the Etruscans and as such, has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage for Humanity since 2004. The Necropolis is situated on the plateau of gentle hills known as Monterozzi and so called for the presence of tumulus or small burial mounds of earth that continue parallel to the sea coast running for a distance of 6 km and a width of 3 km. The hill is divided into various sectors: Calvario, Primi Archi, Secondi Archi, area Scataglini and Doganaccia. In the portion of the Necropolis which is open to the public known as Calvario, there are currently 19 visible mounds or hypogeums (underground burial chambers). Furthermore, an additional five burial chambers are opened at specified times and are accessible with a guided tour thanks to the collaboration between the Superintendent of Archeological Conservation for Southern Etruria and the municipality of Tarquinia. These include the burial chambers of the Panther, The Tomb of the Bulls, The Tomb of Omens, The Tomb of the Baron and Fondo Scataglini.

La denominazione deriva dal soggetto della decorazione dipinta sulle pareti, intesa a celebrare i giochi e le danze in onore del defunto. La tomba, scavata nel 1961, consta di un unico vano, con soffitto a doppio spiovente. Sul pavimento si trovano gli incassi per i piedi dell'unico letto funebre. Datazione: fine VI secolo a.C. The burial chambers were so named due to the decorative frescoes which depict games and dances in honour of the deceased. The tomb was excavated in 1961 and is a single chambered cell with a sloping roof. On the floor there are the footings for a single funeral bed. This tomb is dated from the late 6th century B.C.

Tomba Cristofani

La tomba fu scavata nel 1962 e consta di un'unica camera quadrangolare, con tetto a doppio spiovente. La tomba rappresenta un padiglione, una tenda, che viene montata durante le battute di caccia.. La stoffa che costituisce le pareti è leggera e quasi inconsistente e permette di vedere a chi è dentro il padiglione il paesaggio esterno. In basso le pareti laterali e quella di fondo sono occupate da un’alta banchina continua dove erano posti gli oggetti di corredo e in posizione centrale la kline, o letto funebre, con il corpo del defunto. Datazione: fine VI secolo a.C. The tomb was uncovered in 1962 and consists of a single square chamber with a sloping roof. The tomb represents a pavilion, a large tent which is set up during the hunt. The fabric of the pavilion painted on the walls is light and transparent so that those inside can see the landscape outside. On the lower portion of the side walls and at the rear portion of the chamber there is a high platform or bench-like projection upon which funeral relics were placed. In the center of the chamber lies the kline or couch which served as the funeral bed upon which the body of the deceased was lain. Dated: End of the 6th century B.C.

Sia sulle pareti della stanza che dei loculi sono rappresentate figure di danzatori e musici. La tomba è stata recentemente dedicata all’etruscologo Mauro Cristofani. Datazione: prima metà del IV secolo a.C. These burial chamber was discovered in 1961 and constitute a single chamber with a double-slanted or sloping roof and three large indentations or recesses in the wall known as loculus. The loculus at the end of the chamber is shaped like a small temple, with a sloping roof and a cross beam in relief motif. On both walls and in the niches there are dancing figures and musicians. This tomb was recently dedicated to the Etruscologist, Mauro Cristofani and is dated the first half of the 4th century B.C.

04 Tomba del Fiore di Loto La tomba, scoperta nel 1962, è costituita da una camera quadrangolare con soffitto a doppio spiovente. La decorazione pittorica è molto semplice, consiste infatti di fascioni paralleli che corrono alla sommità delle pareti e felini in posizione araldica nei frontoncini delle pareti corte. Datazione fine VI secolo a.C. This burial chamber was excavated in 1962 and is composed of a single square chamber with a sloping roof. The decorative paintings are very simple and consist of parallel bands that run along the top borders of the walls, and felines; these beasts are posed in heraldic positions in the pediments of the shorter walls. Tomba delle Leonesse

Tombe della Pulcella

Scoperta nel 1874, la tomba è formata da una piccola camera quadrangolare con soffitto a doppio spiovente, che rappresenta un padiglione sorretto da sei colonne tuscaniche. Sulle pareti laterali ci sono due coppie maschili di banchettanti sdraiati su cuscini. Sulla parete di fondo sono raffigurati i danzatori e i musici che rallegrano il banchetto, ai lati di un grande cratere metallico contenente il vino..

Datazione: 530-520 a.C.

La tomba fu scoperta nel 1865 e così denominata dalla raffigurazione di una giovane ancella dipinta sulla parete sinistra. Nella parete di fondo si apre un loculo decorato ad imitazione di un tempio. Sulle pareti laterali sono rappresentate coppie a banchetto. Datazione: seconda metà del V secolo a.C.

This tomb was unearthed in 1874 and consists of a small square chamber with a sloped roof painted to resemble a pavillion which is supported by six Tuscan columns. Depicted along the side walls are two pairs of male banqueters reposing upon pillows.

On the back walls, dancers and musicians entertain the banquet guests while supporting a large metal cauldron containing wine. Dated: 530-520 B.C.

The tomb was unearthed in 1865 and was so named because of the figure of the young maiden depicted on the left wall. The back wall opens into a loculus which is decorated like a temple. Couples seated at a banquet adorn the side walls.

Dated: Second half of the 5th century, B.C.

La tomba è stata dedicata recentemente a Massimo Pallottino, grande studioso e fondatore della etruscologia. Sulle pareti sono rappresentate scene di danza, accompagnate da un citaredo anch’esso danzante.

Domina l’uso del colore rosso.

The tomb was excavated in 1962 and consists of a single chamber with a sloping roof. This burial chamber was recently dedicated to Massimo Pallottino, great scholar and founder of Etruscology.

The walls are painted with lively dance scenes accompanied by a dancing cithara player. Red is the predominant color.

Dated: Beginning of the 5th century B.C.

La tomba fu scoperta nel 1973 ed é composta da due camere assiali. Sul frontone della parete di fondo della prima camera sono rappresentati due cacciatori a cavallo che ritornano da una battuta di caccia. Sul frontone della parete di fondo della seconda camera è rappresentata una coppia di banchettanti. Sulle pareti della seconda camera sono rappresentate scene di caccia e pesca, ambientate in un paesaggio marino. Sulla parete sinistra vi sono tre pescatori su una barca vicino ad uno scoglio dal quale si tuffa un giovane nudo. Al centro della parete di fondo una barca con quattro uomini. Datazione: ultimo ventennio del sec. VI a.C. This burial chamber was discovered in 1973 and is composed of two chambers placed upon the same axis, one in front of the other. Painted upon the pediment of the back wall of the first room are two hunters on horse-back returning from the hunt. On the back wall in the second room a couple of banqueters are depicted. Hunting and fishing scenes are painted along the walls of the second chamber which capture a seascape setting. On the left wall there are three fishermen in a boat which is near the rocks. A young nude male is diving off the cliff about to plunge into the water. Dated: Last two decades of the 6th century B.C.

20 Tomba dei Caronti

Scoperta nel 1960 costituisce un esempio di tomba di epoca ellenistica a due livelli con vestibolo. Al primo piano si apre una camera, fornita di banchine, utilizzata per le cerimonie di culto: da questa si accede a due camere sottostanti raggiungibili mediante una stretta e ripida scalinata, dove avveniva la deposizione. Sulle pareti della camera superiore, chiamata vestibolo, sono scolpite due finte porte, ai lati delle quali è raffigurato il "Charun", demone della mitologia etrusca che ha il compito di accompagnare le anime nell’Oltretomba. Datazione: prima metà III secolo a.C.

Scoperta nel 1960, la tomba è costituita da una grande camera con soffitto a doppio spiovente e banchina lungo le pareti. Il grande fregio delle pareti raffigura una serie di alberelli con uccelli in volo o posti sui rami. Sulla parete di fondo sono rappresentati tra gli alberi due giovani che si salutano.

Datazione: fine V secolo a.C.

This Tomb was discovered in 1960 and constitutes an example of the Hellenistic period with two levels or floors and a vestibule. On the first floor there is a chamber furnished with benches which was utilized for religious relics during ceremonies. By treading down a narrow, steep staircase, two other chambers can be reached where the depositions or religious absolutions were performed. On the walls of the upper chamber, known as a vestibule, two fake doors were created with the figure of Charon, the menacing Etruscan demon of the underworld who accompanied the souls to the after-life. Dated: 1st half of the 3rd century B.C.

10 Tomba dei due Tetti La tomba fu scoperta nel 1969. Ha un pilastro al centro della camera decorato con una figura di Charun. Sulle pareti laterali sono presenti delle iscrizioni in corrispondenza di alcuni pseudosarcofagi. Sulla parete destra, si trova un fregio figurato, miniaturistico, nel quale viene rappresentato il viaggio del defunto verso l'Ade. Datazione: prima metà del II secolo a.C. This burial chamber was excavated in 1969. It has a pillar in the center of the chamber decorated with a figure of Charon. On the side walls inscriptions from painted sarcofaghi can be seen. On the right wall there is an ornamented minature frieze upon which the deceased is depicted in his journey to Hades.

Dated: First half of the 2nd century B.C.

This tomb was discovered in 1960 and consists of a large chamber with a sloping roof and bench-like projections placed along the walls. The large frieze on the walls depicts a row of trees with birds in flight or perched on branches. On the back wall lies a painting of two youth waving at each other from amongst the trees. Dated: End of 5th century B.C.

12 Tomba Cardarelli Dedicata al poeta tarquiniese Vincenzo Cardarelli. Al centro della parete di fondo è dipinta una porta, ai lati della quale si trovano due suonatori. Sulla parete sinistra un personaggio, preceduto da un suonatore di doppio flauto, incede verso una donna riccamente vestita, probabilmente la defunta sepolta nella tomba, preceduta a sua volta da uno schiavo con flabello e seguita da un’ancella con uno specchio. Sulla parete destra vi sono un danzatore, un suonatore, un inserviente e un giocatore di kottabos in atto di lanciare il vino. Datazione: fine VI secolo a.C. This tomb is dedicated to the Tarquinian poet, Vincenzo Cardarelli. A door is painted at the center of the back wall and on either side there are two musicians. On the left wall there is a person following a double-flute player and walking with dignity towards a woman who is richly dressed - probably the deceased lain in the tomb. The woman is being led by a slave with a flabellum (a fan made of leaves or feathers) and is followed by a servant with a mirror.

On the right wall lies a dancer, a musician, an attendant and a kottabos player in the act of hurling his wine. Dated: End of the 6th century B.C.

Tomba Moretti

Tomba dei Fiorellini

La tomba fu scoperta nel 1968 e consta di una camera unica con soffitto a doppio spiovente.

Recentemente è stata dedicata a Mario Moretti, che ha per lungo tempo ricoperto l’incarico di Soprintendente dell’Etruria Meridionale. Sulle pareti laterali sono raffigurati danzatori, in quella di fondo è raffigurata una donna riccamente vestita e adorna di gioielli, probabilmente la defunta, verso la quale si dirige un uomo in atto di offrirle una coppa.

Datazione: 500 - 490 a.C.

La tomba fu scavata nel 1960 ed è costituita da un'unica camera con soffitto a doppio spiovente e banchina. Sulle pareti sono rappresentate scene di banchetto, danze e musica. Particolare la decorazione del frontone della parete di fondo dove sono rappresentati due galli affrontati, pronti al combattimento. Datazione metà V secolo a.C.

This tomb was excavated in 1968 and consists of a single chamber with a sloping roof. Recently, these burial chambers were dedicated in honour of Mario Moretti who long held the position of Superintendent of Archaeological Conservation for Southern Etruria.

Dancers decorate the side walls and at the rear wall a richly dressed woman, adorned in jewellery is depicted - probably an image of the deceased. A man is painted in the act of offering a cup to the woman.

This tomb was excavated in 1960 and consists of a single chamber with a sloping roof and a benches.

Banquet scenes adorn the walls with dance and music. The rear wall pediment holds a unique fresco wherein two roosters are posed, ready to fight - an ancient cock fight.

14 Tombe della Fustigazione Scoperta nel 1960 è formata da un'unica camera quadrangolare con soffitto a doppio spiovente. Al centro delle pareti sono dipinte delle porte. Ai lati delle porte sono rappresentati musici e danzatori alternati a scene erotiche, ciascuna con una donna e due comasti. In una scena la donna viene fustigata da un comasta e questa azione ha dato il nome alla tomba. Datazione: fine VI secolo a.C. This burial chamber was excavated in 1960 and consists of a single square chamber with a sloping roof. Doors are painted at the center of the rear wall.

Scenes of dancers and musicians are intertwined with those of an erotic nature on the side walls.

Depicting a woman with two male revellers. In one scene the woman is being whipped by the reveller and it is from this gesture that the tomb has been named. Dated: End of the 6th century B.C.

E’ stata recentemente dedicata alla memoria dell'architetto che si era occupato del restauro e della conservazione delle tombe etrusche dipinte di Tarquinia. Sulla parete di fondo è rappresentata una scena di banchetto con due "klynai" sulle quali sono sdraiati due coppie di uomini, dietro e a fianco ad essi si trovano delle donne stanti. Sulle pareti laterali sono rappresentate scene di danza e musica, ambientate in un boschetto popolato di uccelli, con alberelli decorati da festoni. Datazione: metà V secolo a.C. It was recently dedicated in memory of the architect who was responsabile for the restoration and conservation of all the Etruscan painted tombs in Tarquinia. A banquet scene is depicted on the rear wall of the tomb with two pairs of men, each reclining on separate “klynai” (type of couch) while women are standing both behind and at their sides. The side walls depict festive scenes of dance and music set in an enchanting forest full of birds and tress adobed for a party. Dated: First half of the 5th century B.C.

22 Tomba della Caccia al Cervo

La tomba fu scavata nel 1960 ed è costituita da un'unica camera con soffitto a doppio spiovente.

Sulle pareti sono rappresentate scene di banchetto e danze che si svolgono all’aperto, tra alberelli. Il sostegno del columen è decorato con una scena di caccia con il cacciatore, il cane ed un cervo che ha dato il nome alla tomba. Datazione: metà V secolo a.C.

La tomba, scoperta nel 1874, è composta da un piccola stanza con soffitto a doppio spiovente, ed è una delle più piccole tombe dipinte di Tarquinia. Nelle pareti sono rappresentati, separati da alberelli, danzatori e suonatori ebbri e coronati con tralci di vite: è questa la rappresentazione tipica dei coniasti, o baccanti, da cui deriva il nome della tomba. Datazione: fine VI secolo a.C.

This tomb was excavated in 1960 and consists of a single chamber with a sloping roof. On the side walls there is a festive outdoor banquet scene with dancing staged beneath the trees. The support beams are decorated with a hunting scene depicted by the hunter, his dog and the deer - from which the burial chamber took its name.

This burial chamber was unearthed in 1874 and is composed of a small room with a sloping roof and is one of the smallest painted tombs in Tarquinia. The walls are decorated with inebriated dancers and musicians frolicking amongst the trees, wearing crowns of grape vines - the typical symbol of Bacchus, and thus the name of the tomb. 18 Tomba dei Leopardi È costituita da un'unica camera con soffitto a doppio spiovente. Il nome deriva dai due leopardi in posizione araldica rappresentati sul frontone. Sulla parete di fondo è raffigurato un banchetto con tre coppie sdraiate su altrettante klynai, tra queste, servitori nudi che recano da bere ai commensali.

Sulle pareti laterali sono rappresentati suonatori di flauto e lira, danzatori e un piccolo corteo di sei giovanetti che avanzano verso i signori a banchetto recando in mano delle offerte. Datazione: 480/470 a.C. This tomb consists of a single chamber with a sloping roof. Its name is derived from the two leopards which are posed in the pediment, heralding the arrival of the deceased. The back wall features a banquet with three couples on three separate “klynai” while nude servants pour drinks for their masters. The side walls are adorned with musicians playing the flute and lyre, dancers and a small procession of six young males who are going towards the banquet guests with offerings in their hands.

20 Tomba degli Anina Si tratta della tomba dell'aristocratica famiglia tarquiniese degli Anina. La tomba venne fatta preparare dal capostipite della gens, Larth Anina, il quale fece dipingere, ai lati della porta di accesso verso l'interno della tomba, le figure di due demoni etruschi: Charun armato di martello e Vanth con una fiaccola in mano che usa per rischiarare il cammino delle anime verso l'Oltretomba. Datazione: metà III secolo a.C. This burial chamber contained the aristocratic Tarquinian family of the Anina. The interior of the tomb was designed by Larth Anina, the head of the family, who arranged to have two Etruscan demons painted on either side of the entrance to the tomb on the interior walls. These two demons were depicted as Charon, the demon of the underworld who is armed with a hammer and Vanth who carried a torch in hand to light the way for enlightened souls travelling to the after-life.

21 Tomba delle Pantere La tomba è composta da un'unica camera con soffitto a doppio spiovente e due alte banchine lungo le pareti laterali. La decorazione si limita ai due frontoni, dove sono rappresentate due grandi pantere affrontate, che poggiano le zampe anteriori su una protome di felino posta al centro e rappresentata frontalmente. I dipinti della tomba delle Pantere sono l'esempio più antico di dipinti figurati a Tarquinia. Datazione: fine del VII secolo a.C. This burial chamber consists of a single room with a sloping roof and two high benches running along the side walls. The decorations are limited to the two pediments where two great panthers are facing each other with their front paws placed on the head of a feline which is situated in the center and facing front.

The frescoes within the Tomb of the Panther are the most ancient example of figurative painting in Tarquinia, dating back to the 7th century B.C.

Scoperta nel 1892 si distingue per la particolare pianta con un’ampia camera, sul fondo della quale si aprono due piccole camere. La stanza principale presenta una decorazione complessa: nella parete di fondo si trova un fregio figurato, sopra le porte, con due gruppi erotici, uno dei quali subisce la carica di un toro a testa umana, accanto all’altro gruppo invece, si trova un toro accovacciato. Nella parte inferiore della parete, è dipinta una scena che narra un episodio della guerra di Troia: l'agguato di Achille a Troilo, il più giovane dei figli di Priamo.. La scena è la più antica raffigurazione mitologica rappresentata nelle tombe tarquiniesi. Datazione: 540-530 a.C. Unearthed in 1892 it is distinguished for its unique architechtural floor plan. The main chamber opens at the rear into two smaller rooms and is adorned with a very complex decorative motif. On the far wall a figurative frieze is depicted above the door with two groups engaged in erotic activities.

One group is facing a charging bull bearing a human head while beside the other group lies a crouching bull. Running along the lower portion of the wall there is a painted scene which narrates an episode from the Trojan War - the ambush led by Achilles in Troy upon Troilus, the youngest son of Priam who was the king of Troy. This particular scene is the most ancient representation of Greek mythology depicted in the Tarquinian tombs. Dated: 540-530 B.C.

Sulla parete destra due giovani, accanto ai cavalli, con il braccio destro alzato in segno di saluto. Sulla parete sinistra la stessa scena con una figura femminile velata tra due giovani. Datazione: fine VI secolo a.C. On the rear wall of this burial chamber there are horsemen depicted with a man standing between them. The man is leaning against a young flautist and holding a cup in his hand while moving towards a woman whose arm is raised in greeting. On the left-hand wall the same scene is repeated but with a veiled woman standing between the two young horsemen. Dated: End of the 6th century B.C.

Nella parete di fondo è raffigurata una porta ai lati della quale si trovano due personaggi con le braccia alzate in gesto di saluto, interpretati, al momento della scoperta, come Auguri, cioè sacerdoti. Sulle altre pareti si svolgono scene di giochi funebri in onore del defunto: una scena di lotta domina la parete laterale destra, dove è raffigurato anche il gioco etrusco del Phersu. Datazione: 530-520 a.C. On the back wall of this burial chamber there is a painted door with a person depicted on either side, their arms raised in greeting. This representation was interpreted at the moment of excavation as being two priests or diviners and thus named “Tomba degli Auguri”. The other walls are painted with funeral games held in honour of the deceased. The right-hand wall is dominated by ancient Etruscan game of “Phersu”. Dated: 530-520 B.C.

LA DOGANACCIA Itinerario archeologico denominato “Via dei Principi”. Sulle pendici meridionali del colle dei Monterozzi, lungo una delle antiche strade di accesso alla città etrusca, si trovano i due tumuli della Doganaccia, noti come il Tumulo del Re ed il Tumulo della Regina. I tumuli sono databili ai periodi Orientalizzante e Arcaico (VII - VI secolo a.C.) e sono costituiti da un imponente basamento, in parte scavato nella roccia e rivestito con blocchi squadrati, ricoperto da una calotta di terra. Furono scavati nel 1928 dal Cultrera e recentemente sono oggetto di lavori finalizzati alla valorizzazione e fruizione.

“LA DOGANACCIA” Doganaccia is an archaeological itinerary known as “The Way of Princes”. Upon the southern slopes of the hills of Monterozzi, along an ancient road which once led to the Etruscan city, two burial mounds of the Doganaccia can be found. These are referred to as the King’s Tumulo (burial mound) and the Queen’s Tumulo. These mounds date back to the Orientalizing and Archaic Periods (7th-6th centuries B.C.) and are constructed with a notably deep foundation. These tombs were excavted in 1928 by the “Cultrera” and further research has recently been financed in order to completely valorize and bring the project to fruition.

GRAVISCA Sulla costa, in prossimità del Porto Clementino, si trovano i resti dell’emporio etrusco di Gravisca.

Sono visibili i resti di un importante luogo di culto, situato ai margini della colonia romana, dedotta nel 181 a.C., sui resti di un precedente insediamento etrusco. Il santuario è frequentato dal 600 a.C. al III secolo a.C. ed è articolato in vari edifici di culto dedicati a divinità greche ed etrusche.

“GRAVISCA” The archaeological area known as Gravisca is located along the coast near the ancient port, Porto Clementino.

The site holds the remains of a prominent temple of worship, situated next to the ruins of a Roman colony established in 181 B.C., which in turn, was built upon the pre-existing Etruscan settlement. The sanctuary was active from 600 B.C. to 300 B.C. and is articulated with the remains of various structures dedicated to both Greek and Etruscan deities.

LA CIVITA Acropoli “E chi voglia vedere il paesaggio cornetano in quanto ha di più vario, profondo, meditativo, deve guardarlo da questo ritiro elevato….; Meraviglioso è l’accordo fra ciò che sappiamo della Civita e le impressioni che ci destano le sue reliquie e la sua posizione….; La Civita è un mistero naturale e paesistico, una grossa macchinazione della fantasia religiosa e politica degli Etruschi….” Vincenzo Cardarelli traduceva queste emozioni nelle pagine del suo “Villa Tarantola” (1948) vincitore del Premio Strega. Emozioni che ancora la “Civita”, il pianoro più interno parallelo a quello della Necropoli, suscita ancora deserto, ancora denso di tracce profonde dell’antica civiltà degli Etruschi. Passeggiare sulla Civita, che punta verso il mare che si intravede fra due quinte collinari, significa trovarsi nel vivo della vicenda di una delle più famose città etrusche. A tal proposito fanno eco le fonti letterarie che raccontano di Tarconte, il fondatore della città: arando una zolla di terra tarquiniese egli ne vede scaturire Tagete, il fanciullo nato vecchio, dal quale riceve i fondamenti della religione etrusca. È così che la città assume un ruolo di primo piano per la cultura del popolo etrusco, che Tito Livio definisce “gente sopra ogni altra dedita alle pratiche religiose” (Liv. V, I, 6). La Civita di Tarquinia è formata da due pianori uniti da uno stretto istmo dove si sono svolti scavi sistematici fin dal XIX secolo. Nella prima metà del secolo scorso l’archeologo Pietro Romanelli ne ha messo in luce il profilo di città etrusca, scoprendo il circuito delle mura che unisce il Pian della Regina, con l’imponente santuario dell’Ara della Regina, al pianoro occidentale che conserva resti di edifici dell’abitato. Alla saldatura fra i due pianori, sul lato volto verso l’interno, rinvenne la porta che ancora oggi porta il suo nome, “Porta Romanelli”. Nel 1982 sono iniziati gli scavi dell’Università degli Studi di Milano sul pianoro occidentale che hanno messo in luce il ‘complesso-monumentale’, la più antica area sacra etrusca finora rinvenuta, e le fasi più antiche del santuario dell’Ara della Regina. Negli anni più recenti sono riprese le indagini sulle mura a cura della Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici dell’Etruria meridionale e dell’Università degli Studi di Milano. THE CIVITA Acropoli Long ago, the esteemed poet, Vincenzo Cardarelli defined the Civita as “...a mystery embedded in nature and the surrounding landscape with a grand intriguing urbanistic plan, engineered by the religious and political fantasy of the Etruscans...” (Villa Tarantola, 1948). Walking along the plateau of the Civita while catching a glimpse of the Tyrrhenian Sea from betwixt the rolling hills, you find yourself catapulted back in time to one of the most famous Etruscan cities. Speaking of which, there are ancient literary sources which tell the legend of Tarconte, the city’s founder. One day, while plowing his fields, he witnessed Tagete, a divine being who appeared as a child, but with the face of an old man. Tangete revealed the divine laws to Tarconte, known as the Etruscan Disciplines, which became the foundation of the Etruscan religion. Thus, the Etruscan city became renowned throughout the lands for the prominent role it played both culturally and religiously. Tito Livio defined the Etruscans as the “most religious amongst men” (Liv. V, I, 6). The Civita of Tarquinia is situated on two plateaus united by a narrow isthmus where archaeological excavations have been underway since the 18th century. During the first half of the century, archaeologo Pietro Romanelli brought the profile of the Etruscan city to light, discovering traces of the original wall which surrounded the city uniting the “Pian della Regina” where the majestic sanctuary, “Ara della Regina” rested, with the eastern pianura that now conserves the remains of domestic dwellings. Laying at the junction between the two plains, on the side which faces inward, the original door was discovered and even today it bears the same name as then, “Porta Romanelli”.

In 1982, the Department of Archaeological Studies at the University of Milan began excavations on the eastern pianura unearthing the Monumental Complex - the most ancient sacred Etruscan area discovered to date, as well as the oldest portion of the sanctuary of the “Ara della Regina”. In recent years more in depth studies have begun on the surrounding wall thanks to funding from the Superintendent for Archaeological Preservation in Southern Etruria in collaboration with the University of Milan.

Complesso Monumentale (The Monumental Complex)

Corrisponde a una parte dell’abitato, con una continuità di vita ininterrotta fino al II sec. a.C. Le origini dell’aggregazione del nucleo urbano risalgono al X sec. a.C.: una cavità naturale costituisce il fulcro di attività a carattere sacro-istituzionale di notevole interesse. Accanto ad essa è stato rinvenuto un bambino caratterizzato dal “morbo sacro” (affetto da epilessia), che gli antichi ritenevano potesse mettere in comunicazione con il divino. Proprio perché manifesti nella città-madre della religione degli Etruschi, questi rinvenimenti gettano luce sui modi in cui si concretizzavano le forme religiose della comunità, dalla dimensione precivica fino alle soglie della Romanizzazione. (Giovanna Bagnasco Gianni) This name refers to a geographical area which was continuously inhabited without interruption until the 2nd century B.C. The origins of this urbanistic nucleus aggregation date back to the 10th century B.C. A natural hollow in the landscape constituted the heart of sacred institutionalized rituals and ceremonies of a remarkable nature. Located beside this space, the remains of a child were discovered having died from a “Sacred Disease” which was actually epilepsy. The ancient priests believed that the child had the power to communicate with the divinities. Due to these kinds of evidence unearthed in the mother city of the Etruscan civilization, archaeologists and scholars have been able to formulate theories as to how the Etruscans worshipped from the dawn of their civilization up to the threshold of Romanization.

It is placed on a slight incline leading into the city where the remains of ponderous ancient structures can be found - each constructed with the use of interesting varied stonework techniques.

Il Santuario dell’Ara della Regina (The Sanctuary of the “Ara della Regina”) Il tempio con le sue grandiose proporzioni dà la misura dell’importanza di Tarquinia nell’Etruria intera. Gli scavi hanno dato corpo alla possibilità che qui fosse ricordato fin dal VI secolo a.C. l’eroe fondatore della città, Tarconte, di cui resta presumibilmente il cenotafio monumentalizzato da due piattaforme in blocchi squadrati, orientate in senso diverso rispetto a quello del tempio del IV secolo a.C. Della decorazione di questa fase più monumentale restano pochi frammenti in terracotta del frontone tra cui la famosa lastra dei Cavalli Alati, ora conservata al Museo Archeologico Nazionale Tarquiniense. È possibile che la scena rappresentata fosse l’apoteosi dell’eroe Eracle, antenato di Tarconte, dopo la sua incinerazione sulla pira. (Giovanna Bagnasco Gianni) The majestic proportions of the Sanctuary of the “Ara della Regina” validates the importance of Etruscan Tarquinia throughout Etruria. The excavations have revealed evidence supporting the possibility that the founding Etruscan father, Tarconte was remembered and honoured up until the 6th century B.C. The presumable remains of his cenotaphium or funerary monument have been found, consisting of two large platforms constructed of square blocks which are oriented towards a different direction than the remains of the succeding temple built in the 4th century B.C. Only few decorative elements remain from this monumental period and they are limited to terracotta fragments which once adorned the ornate pediment of the facade.

The most famous of these is the slab or entablature of The Winged Horses which is now conserved at the National Archaeolgical Museum of Tarquinia. It is probable that the scene represents the apotheosis or deification of the hero Heracles, ancestor of Tarconte, after his incineration on the funeral pire.

Il Museo Archeologico Nazionale Tarquiniense è ospitato nel Palazzo Vitelleschi, risalente al XV secolo. L’esposizione è collocata sui tre piani del palazzo. Gli ambienti al piano terra accolgono, in sequenza cronologica, i materiali in pietra appartenenti alle collezioni del museo tra cui sarcofagi databili dalla metà del IV secolo a.C..

Da porre in evidenza la sala 1 che contiene i sarcofagi di maggior pregio, alcuni dei quali scolpiti in marmo greco, appartenuti ad alcune delle famiglie più in vista della Tarquinia della metà del IV secolo a.C. The National Archaeological Museum resides in the 15th century palace, Palazzo Vitelleschi. The exhibitions are divided amongst three floors. The ground floor holds ancient stone findings which are part of the museum’s permanent collection and include sarcophagi or stone tombs dating from the first half of the 4th century B.C. which are placed in chronological order. Those exhibited in Room 1 are the most prestigious, some of which are sculpted in Greek marble and belonged to the most prominent families living in Tarquinia during the second half of the 4th century B.C.

Sono esposte, ordinate cronologicamente, le ceramiche provenienti dagli scavi delle Necropoli. La visita inizia dall’ultima stanza del ballatoio dove sono raccolti i materiali più antichi, risalenti al periodo Villanoviano (secc. IX - VIII a.C.). Le sale successive sono disposte in ordine cronologico, quindi procedendo si possono ammirare i reperti databili al periodo Orientalizzante (fine secc. VIII - VII a.C.) provenienti dalla Fenicia e dall’Egitto; i vasi importati dalla Grecia, soprattutto da Corinto, dalla fine del sec. VII al sec. VI a.C.; la ceramica etrusco - corinzia che gli Etruschi produssero ad imitazione della greca ed il bucchero, la tipica ceramica etrusca, riproduzione economica del vasellame bronzeo. A seguire le ceramiche di importazione provenienti dall’Attica, eseguite con la tecnica a figure nere e a figure rosse, databili dal sec. VI a.C. In una vetrina del Salone delle Feste è raccolta una scelta di monete etrusche di bronzo, fuse e coniate e le monete d’oro risalenti al periodo tardo imperiale, ritrovate negli scavi della colonia romana di Gravisca, dedotta nel 181 a.C. Inoltre, in una vetrina, sono esposti alcuni gioielli in oro eseguiti con la tecnica della granulazione. Procedendo nelle sale successive si possono ammirare reperti di produzione locale, sia ceramici che metallici: specchi, balsamari, suppellettili. Nell’ultima sala sono raccolti gli ex voto, cioè doni offerti alla divinità per devozione, provenienti dal santuario dell’”Ara della Regina”. La maggior parte di essi riproducono, in terracotta, parti del corpo umano oppure teste di individui per i quali si vuole chiedere la protezione della divinità.

On the first floor resides the ceramic collection which has been excavated from the Necropolis and is organized in chronologial order. The exhibition begins in the last room at the far end of the gallery which displays the most ancient artifacts hailing from the Villanovian Period (9th-8th century B.C.) and continues chronologically in the successive rooms passing through the Orientalizing Period (late 8th -7th century B.C.) with exquisite examples of Phoenician and Egyptian art, important Grecian urns - especially those from Corinth which date back between the late 7th and 6th century B.C. Continuing, museum visitors can admire the typical Etruscan ceramics - Corinthian in style imitating the Greeks, and known as Bucchero which was basically an affordable reproduction of bronze dinnerware. Following, there are examples of imported ceramics brought from Attica decorated with black and red figures dating back to the 6th century B.C. Located in a showcase in the room, “Salone della Feste” there is an Etruscan bronze coin collection as well as gold minted coins dating from the late Imperial Roman period which were found in the excavations of the Roman Colony at Gravisca which was settled in 181 B.C. Another glass case holds a collection of gold jewelery which was designed and created using a granulation technique. The next room displays locally crafted Etruscan items including ceramics, metal works, mirrors, perfume receptacles and other household items. In the last room there are devotional relics - those offered to the gods in worship, which were excavated from the sanctuary at the “Ara della Regina”. The majority of these are molded out of terracotta and are depictions of different parts of the human body or individual heads. These were offered to the gods in order to ask for protection and healing.

Secondo Piano Second Floor Al secondo piano si trova un loggiato quadrangolare dal quale si può godere una magnifica vista sulla città e sulla campagna. In un gruppo di sale climatizzate sono conservate e ricostruite alcune tombe dipinte i cui affreschi sono stati distaccati: si tratta delle tombe del Triclinio, delle Bighe, delle Olimpiadi, della Nave. Nel salone delle Armi sono conservati i Cavalli Alati, altorilievo fittile databile al sec. IV a.C., che faceva parte della decorazione del tempio dell’”Ara della Regina”. Completa l’esposizione una scelta di reperti rinvenuti nei grandi scavi di Tarquinia, gestiti dall’Università di Milano per quanto riguarda la città etrusca e dall’Università di Perugia per quanto riguarda il sito dell’ ”emporion” di Gravisca.

The second floor holds a large square porch with a magnificent panoramic view of the city and the surrounding countryside and a group of temperature-controlled rooms where several original Etruscan tombs have been reconstructed. The lively murals painted have been strategically detached and brought to the museum for conservation and observation purposes. These include the tombs of Triclinio, Bighe, Olimpiadi and the Nave. In the former Arms Room, the renowned “Winged Horses” have been preserved - a high relief sculpture from the 4th century BC which was once part of the ornate facade of the Temple of the “Ara della Regina”. The remaining part of the exhibition includes a selection of relics discovered during the course of the excavation work. Those unearthed in the ancient Etruscan city were discovered by the University of Milan while those excavated from the Emporium at Gravisca were the results of the University of Perugia.

Nel decennio 1950 - 1960 la Fondazione Lerici opera a Tarquinia scoprendo o riscoprendo numerose tombe dipinte. Naturalmente non tutte le tombe erano in condizioni ottimali quindi in alcune fu necessario distaccare i dipinti per preservarli dalla distruzione. La tecnica adottata fu quella dello "strappo" dell'affresco Between 1950 and 1960 the Lerici Foundation was active in Tarquinia discovering and rediscovering numerous painted tombs. Naturally, not all of these tombs were in optimal condition, so it was necessary to detach the paintings in order to keep them from being destroyed. The technique adopted has been named “strappo” dell’ affresco (ripping off the fresco).

La tomba fu rinvenuta nel 1830 in località Calvario. G. Dennis la definì "la tomba della gioia e delle feste". I dipinti furono distaccati nel 1949. La camera sepolcrale è rettangolare. Sulla parete di fondo è rappresentato, sopra uno zoccolo con motivo ad onde marine, un banchetto funebre ambientato all'aperto: tre coppie di commensali, da cui il nome della tomba, sono raffigurate distese su klinai, i letti conviviali. Una delle coppie è vista di scorcio.

In primo piano, sotto le basse tavole per il vasellame, si trovano un gallo, un gatto, una pernice. Il banchetto è allietato da musici e danzatori di ambo i sessi e servito da coppieri ed inservienti, rappresentati sulle pareti laterali.

Molti studiosi hanno attribuito le pitture alla mano di un artista greco o un etrusco formatosi in ambiente greco per la perfezione del disegno e la ricercatezza dei particolari che avvicina questi dipinti alla ceramica attica a figure rosse. Datazione: tra il 470 ed il 440 a.C. This tomb was discovered as early as 1830 in the area of Calvario and was described by G. Dennis as “The tomb of Joy and of the Party”. The paintings were detached in 1949. The chamber is rectangular and on the back wall there is a depiction of the sea with waves rolling along the base while beyond the waves an outdoor funeral banquet is being held. Three couples are reclining on “klinai” - and thus the name of the tomb. One of the couples is depicted as being in the background. In the foreground, beneath the low dining table spread with dinnerware, lies a rooster, a cat and a partridge. The banquet is animated with music and dancers of both sexes while cup bearers and attendents are depicted on the side walls as they serve the guests. Many scholars have attributed the paintings to a Greek or Etruscan artist who had studied under Greek influences. The perfection of design and the attention to details in this particular wall fresco greatly resembles the Grecian Attica ceramic work done with red figures. This tomb dates between 470 and 440 B.C.

Scoperta nel 1958 in località Secondi Archi. Le pitture furono distaccate lo stesso anno del rinvenimento. La tomba è costituita da un'unica stanza rettangolare con soffitto a doppio spiovente.

Sulla parete di fondo sono rappresentate quattro coppie di banchettanti sdraiati sulle klinai, riccamente addobbate, serviti da coppieri nudi. Musici e danzatori allietano il convivio che si svolge all'aperto come fanno pensare gli alberelli. Sulla parete sinistra è raffigurata una nave da carico a vela con due alberi (che dà il nome alla tomba) ed una seconda nave più piccola ad un solo albero, circondate da piccole barchette in un paesaggio marino chiuso da alte rocce. Sulla destra della scena è raffigurato il proprietario del sepolcro che sta guardando le navi.

La rappresentazione di una nave da carico e di un porto sono un unicum della pittura etrusca tarquiniese. Datazione: metà del sec. V a.C. This tomb was discovered in the area of The Second Arches and its frescoes were detached in the same year that the tomb was excavated. The tomb is composed of a single rectangular chamber with a sloping roof On the back wall four banquet couples are depicted reclining on richly decorated klinai, while being served by nude cup bearers. Musicians and dancers animate the scene which takes place outside beneath young saplings. On the left hand wall there is one cargo ship with a double sail mast, from which the tomb takes its name and a smaller ship with only one sail, surrounded by smaller fishing boats. The entire scene is set in a picturesque seascape framed by rising cliffs. On the right-hand wall the deceased, who once lay in the tomb, is depicted watching the ships. This fresco of cargo ships and a harbour is the sole Etruscan painting of its kind in Tarquinia. It is dated back to the mid 5th century B.C.

Fu così denominata perché il Soprintendente R. Bartoccini ritenne che "tale denominazione le si addicesse più di ogni altra, per il sereno e felice spirito agonistico che aleggiava nelle scene dipinte sulle pareti". Sulla parete di fondo è raffigurata, al centro, una finta porta. Sui timpani sono raffigurati simposi con coppie di uomini. Sulla parete laterale destra un grande fregio illustra i giochi funebri: la corsa, il salto in lungo, il lancio del disco, il pugilato, il gioco del "Phersu". Sulla parete sinistra è rappresentata una corsa di bighe, l'ultima delle quali si è rovesciata e l'auriga è stato sbalzato in aria. La tomba presenta delle pitture molto raffinate ed eleganti e ciò induce a pensare che fu probabilmente dipinta da un artista greco - orientale. Datazione: 530-520 a.C.

Si tratta di una tomba particolarmente sontuosa, anche nelle rifiniture: lungo le pareti ci sono due fregi, uno piccolo su una specie di trabeazione a rilievo, ed uno grande. Nel fregio piccolo, a fondo bianco, sono rappresentati i ludi funebri ed è l'unico caso in cui sono rappresentate tutte le gare che erano in uso in Grecia ed il gioco tipicamente etrusco dei “Phersu”.

Agli angoli sono raffigurati due palchi di legno, con un tendaggio come tettoia, dai quali assistono alle gare numerose persone, uomini e donne, raffigurati in vivaci conversazioni. Sotto il palco ci sono dei servi sdraiati che seguono le gare. Nel grande fregio, a fondo rosso, è rappresentata una scena di banchetto allietata da danzatori e musici, purtroppo molto danneggiata. Datazione: 490 - 480 a.C.

This tomb is so named because the Superintendent of Archaeological Conservation, R. Baroccini confirmed that the frescoes painted within the chambers have captured the serene and happy agonistic spirit of good sportsmanship- the ideal of the Olympics. In the center of the back wall a false door is depicted while on the typanum a symposium or “drinking party is underway with several male couples. On the right-hand wall a magnificent frieze illustrates funeral games with races, a long jump, discus throwing, a boxer and the Etruscan game “Phersu”. The left-hand wall features a “bighe race” -where a two-wheeled chariot is drawn by two horses, the last of which has turned over and the “auriga” or judge has been thrown into the air. The frescos are painted in a very refined and elegant style which leads scholars to believe that the artist was from eastern Greece. Dated: 530-520 B.C.

This tomb is particularly rich in terms of decorations and ornamentations. Along the walls there are two friezes- a small one which is a sort of an entablature in relief and another larger one. Set on a white background, all of the funeral games once played in Greece are represented, including the Etruscan game of “Phersu”. In the corners, two wooden stages are depicted beneath a sort of tent or canopy where a lively audience - both men and women, are watching, talking and enjoying the games. The larger frieze is sculpted on a red background and captures a banquet scene which is accompanied by dancers and musicians. Unfortunately this frieze is quite damaged. Dated: 490-480 B.C.

Nel Salone delle Armi è collocato il capolavoro della coroplastica tarquiniese. Si tratta di un altorilievo costituito da una coppia di cavalli alati di profilo, scalpitanti, aggiogati ad una biga, della quale resta solo uno spezzone del timone, che doveva essere raffigurata su una seconda lastra posta alla destra di quella con i cavalli alati. Il gruppo, arricchito dai colori rosso, bruno, crema, era utilizzato come rivestimento del mutulo di sinistra del Tempio dell’”Ara della Regina”, il quale, a sua volta, sorse intorno al sec. IV a. C. in sostituzione di un tempio arcaico. L’edificio subì varie vicissitudini, durante l’Alto Medioevo fu probabilmente trasformato in Chiesa.

The renowned “Winged Horses” are displayed in the Arms Room and are considered the Tarquinian masterpiece. There is depicted a profile view of a pair of winged horses that are excited and restless.

The magnificent equines are hitched to a chariot, of which only part of the shaft is remaining. The remainder of the chariot had once been sculpted on an accompanying entablature which would have been placed to the right of the horses. This high relief is adorned with color - red, brown, cream and once decorated the drip moulding of the facade on the left side of the Temple of the “Ara della Regina”.

The temple itself dates back to the 4th century B. C. and was built upon the remains of a prior archaic temple. Since that time, the temple underwent many transformations and during the Middle Ages it was probably converted into a Church.

CENTRO STORICO OLD TOWN Palazzo Vitelleschi (Sec. XV)

Realizzato tra il 1436 ed il 1439 su commissione del cardinale G. Vitelleschi, in parte su strutture preesistenti, su progetto di due diversi architetti, questo edificio, attualmente di proprietà demaniale, dal 1924 è sede del Museo Archeologico Nazionale. Nella facciata si può notare la compresenza di elementi gotici ed elementi rinascimentali, testimonianza sia del lavoro di due diversi architetti, sia del graduale passaggio al nuovo stile, che proprio in quegli anni si andava diffondendo: l'impronta rinascimentale è evidente nel settore sinistro, col portale sormontato da un timpano triangolare in cui è inserito lo stemma della famiglia Vitelleschi, mentre le coppie di bifore del settore centrale e le tre trifore del settore di destra ci riportano al gotico. Nello spazio rientrante del prospetto sul lato sinistro è visibile l'anello di un pozzo ottagonale, datato al 1459 e prima situato nel Palazzo Comunale: sulle pareti dei bassorilievi raffiguranti i santi protettori della città (S. Lituardo, S. Pantaleone, S. Secondiano, S. Margherita e S. Teofanio), gli stemmi del Comune, della famiglia Vitelleschi e di papa Pio II Piccolomini ed un'epigrafe riportante i nomi del Consoli e del Gonfaloniere con la dedica dell'opera. Sulla destra è stata collocata la scultura in bronzo di una figura femminile, donata da E. Greco, famoso scultore del Novecento, in ricordo del poeta tarquiniese V. Cardarelli. Anche sul retro del palazzo, in piazza Soderini, si possono osservare le finestre del primo piano, rettangolari, riferibili al nuovo stile rinascimentale, mentre le bifore del secondo piano sono in stile gotico. É inoltre visibile la sporgenza dell'abside pensile della cappella del palazzo, situata al primo piano.

The palace was constructed between 1436 and 1439 and commissioned by Cardinal G. Vitelleschi. It was partially built upon a pre-existing structure and designed by two different architects. It is currently under the jurisdiction of the Italian Republic and has housed the National Archaeological Museum since 1924. The facade of the Palace is decorated with architectural elements from both the Gothic and Renaissance periods attesting to the work of two different architects as well as to the gradual passage from one style to the other ,which was particularly accentuated in those precise years of construction. The Renaissance style is represented on the left side of the facade as seen in the portal which is surmounted by a triangular tympanum (the ornamental space enclosed by the triangular pediment) upon which the family coat of arms is placed. However, the pair of mullioned or double-paned windows in the central portion and the three triple-paned windows on the right side represent the Gothic influence. In the retreating space behind the facade on the left side lies an octagonallyshaped well dating back to 1459 which had previously been situated outside the town hall (Palazzo Comunale).

The walls of the well are adorned with bass or low relief renderings of the Protector Saints of the city ( S. Lituardo, S. Pantaleone, S. Secondiano, S. Margherita and S. Teofanio) as well as the coat of arms of the city, the Vitelleschi family and of Pope Pius II Piccolomini. In addition, there is an epigraph which records the names of the Consul or magistrates as well as the Gonfalonier or chief city magistrate with a dedication commemorating the construction of the well. To the right of the palace stands a bronze sculpture of a female figure which was created by the famous 19th century sculptor, E. Greco in remembrance of the Tarquinian poet, V. Cardarelli. Behind the palace in Piazza Soderini the first floor windows are easily visible. They are rectangular and represent the novelty of the Renaissance style while the double-paned windows on the second floor reflect the Gothic motif. Furthermore, the protruding apse walls of the palace chapel can be easily seen as the chapel is situated on the first floor.

The chapel and the Cardinal’s antechamber or waiting hall have recently been restored.

A pianta rettangolare, copertura a volta, abside pensile, arco trionfale affiancato da due coppie di colonne tortili sovrapposte e sormontate da arco ribassato su capitelli, la cappella accoglie: S. Paolo (sec. XV, dip. su tavola, attr. Matteo di Giovanni, già in S. Marco?), ritratto di G. Vitelleschi (1886, C. Mariani), stemma marmoreo Vitelleschi (sec. XV), ceramiche (dagli scavi nel palazzo). A destra, a pianta rettangolare e copertura a botte, l'anticappella, studiolo di G. Vitelleschi, è decorata nel registro superiore da affreschi (sec. XV, attr. J. Salimbeni di San Severino Marche o cerchia del Balletta, F. d’Antonio Zacchi): sulle pareti lunghe, Storie di Lucrezia e Virtù cardinali; sulle pareti corte, a sinistra Gesù tra i dottori, a destra stemma Vitelleschi. Gli ambienti restaurati, sono stati riaperti al pubblico (2011) dopo una lunga chiusura.

The enchanting Vitelleschi chapel is set on a rectangular foundation with a vaulted ceiling and a projecting apse - next to which lies a triumphal arch flanked by two pairs of twisted columns which support a rising arch that lowers itself gracefully upon the capital columns. Saint Paul is painted upon canvas dating back to the 15th century.

The work is attributed to Matteo of Giovanni and the painting had perhaps been previously hung in San Marco. There is also a portrait of G. Vitelleschi painted by C. Mariani in 1886 and a marble family coat of arms from the 15th century.

Various ceramics decorate the chapel which were excavated therein.

03 Chiesa di SS. Maria e Margherita

Creata tra il 1914 e il 1918, già nota come porta Firenze (1883-84; prog. C. Grispini); sostituì l’antica porta della valle, ormai inadeguata alle esigenze della viabilità urbana. Presenta un ampio belvedere verso il mare, ambienti di servizio e di guardiania e sulla fronte due pilastri con bugne rettangolari di travertino, su cui si impostano i fastigi con gli stemmi comunali in ghisa. La cancellata in ferro, in tre parti con colonne di ghisa, sormontate dalla stella d’Italia venne rimossa nel 1936.

Distrutta da un incendio (1643), ricostruita in varie fasi e completata alla fine del sec. XIX (F. Dasti, supervisore V. Vespignani), a tre navate, ingloba strutture preesistenti (secc. XII e XIV). Notevoli all’interno affreschi raff. le storie della Vergine (1508-9 , Antonio da Viterbo, detto il Pastura).

It was created between 1914 and 1918, but was already referred to as the Porta Firenze (Gate of Florence); it was constructed to substitute the ancient gateway known as Porta della Valle which was no longer adequate for the expanded urban life. The Gateway offers a beautiful view of the sea from two look-out plazas and consists of two pillars made of indented rectangular travertine blocks, upon which the municiple coat of arms, cast in iron, is placed at the apex of the columns. The original iron gate which consisted of three parts, united by cast iron columns and adorned at the apex with the star of Italy was removed in 1936.

This church was destroyed by fire in 1643, reconstructed in various phases and finally completed at the end of the 19th century ( by F. Dasti and supervised by V. Vespignani). It consists of three naves which incorporate pre-existing structures from the 12th and 14th centuries. It is well-noted for its interior frescos representing the story of the Virgin, painted from 1508-09 by Antonio from Viterbo, known as the ‘Pastura’.

Cinta Muraria e Sistema Difensivo La prima fase, caratterizzata da conci di macco rettangolari regolari, che si imposta sul banco roccioso a vista, si sviluppa intorno a zone di facile accesso; corrisponde all’ampliamento della città, oltre a castello, nei terzieri di Poggio e Valle (secc. IX- XII); la seconda fase corrisponde a castro novo. I conci sono di misura ridotta rispetto a quelli del periodo precedente e l’impianto difensivo si caratterizza come un sistema militare con fossato. Le torri incorporate, insieme con alcune all'interno della città (di castello, Cialdi) fungono da avvistamento. Numerose le postierle di servizio delle porte di accesso, alcune con struttura a baionetta, conservano .forma originale (p. castello), altre sono frutto di diversi interventi (p. Maddalena). L’impianto ha anche subito trasformazioni, dovute alle mutate esigenze urbane (barriera S. Giusto). Notevoli alcune torri extra moenia, non più esistenti (di Corneto), rimaneggiate o a rudere (degli appestati, Caciola, degli orti). Nell’affresco con la genealogia di Corito (Palazzo comunale; C. Donati e D.Taddei,1629-31; ridipinto da M. Gherardini, 1734) il sistema difensivo di Corneto appare, nel complesso, quale è oggi.

Walls and Defenses The first phase of the wall construction was characterized by the use of precisely cut, rectangular blocks of macco stone, placed on rocky banks which were readily in sight, corresponding to the enlargement of the city beyond the castle in the quarter known as Poggio e Valle between the 9th and 12th centuries. The second phase of the construction relates to the borgo (Castro Novo): wherein the stone blocks are smaller with respect to the preceding period and the defense system employed can be compared to a military strategy utilizing trenches and moats. Towers were built and together with some of those already existing within the city, served as look-out posts. There were numerous secondary entrances into the city for deliveries and such. Some of the main access gates were constructed using a bayonet technique - the original form of which has been preserved to this day such as Porta Castello. By contrast, other gateways have been the product of various rennovations such as Porta Maddalena. It is interesting to note that some towers which were built outside the city wall of Corneto, no longer exist. They were were either overrun or reduced to ruinsas “Torre degli appestati”, Torre Caciola and Torre degli orti. Located within the municipal building of Tarquinia there is a fresco depicting the geneology of Corito in which the defense system of Corneto can be seen in its entirety. Surprisingly, it is overall the same today. (The painting was done by C. Donati and D. Taddei, 1629-31 and restored by M. Gherardini, 1734)

Porta di Castello e Torrione detto di Matilde di Canossa

Addossata al torrione a pianta circolare, fa parte di un sistema difensivo a baionetta con torre quadrata e camminamento tra due alti muri; nota come la resechata, fu voluta da G. Vitelleschi (sec. XV) per escludere castello dalla città in fase di espansione e rinnovamento urbanistico.

(Gateway to the Castle and Tower dedicated to Matilda of Canossa) The Tower of Matilda of Canossa is circular in its construction and constitutes part of a bayonet style defense system at the castle entrance. On opposite sides of the entrance way lie two square towers which are connected by high walls on either side, forming a walkway between them. This type of construction is known as “Resechata” and was ordered by G. Vitelleschi (15th century) in order to exclude the castle during the phases of urban expansion and renewal.

Cattedrale fino al 1435; successivamente in abbandono, ebbe alterne vicende e fu più volte restaurata. Di forme romaniche costruita (1121-1208) sulle presistenze della Cappella altomedievale di S. Maria ad rupes.

Denuncia influenze d’oltralpe, lombarde e arabe. Notevoli: le decorazioni dei Cosmati, la vasca battesimale poligonale, il ciborio e l’ambone. La facciata a terminazione rettilinea con campanile a vela ha tre portali ad arco a tutto sesto, una bifora e due monofore soprastanti cosmateschi. La parete esterna sinistra, decorata da paraste con archetti pensili e peducci in nenfro, ha dieci monofore. In alto nella parete centrale un rosone di tipo lombardo cui corrisponde nella parete opposta un oculo. Sul dirupo si impostano le tre absidi (poligonale la centrale, quelle laterali circolari irregolari). La parete esterna destra è rafforzata da un contrafforte a scarpa. Alcune epigrafi e iscrizioni coeve all’edificio ne documentano la storia (committenza, finanziamenti, clero, maestranze e artisti), e la politica cittadina nei secc. XII - XIII. The Church of Saint Mary in the Castle was a cathedral until 1435, having withstood many restorations until its eventual abandonment. It was built between 1121-1208 in the Romanesque style and it appears to have substituted Santa Maria ad rupes (on top of the cliff) which was a pre-existing palatine chapel. The church includes distinct Lombardic and Arabic influences and is particularly noted for the cosmatesque decorations of the polygonal baptismal font, the tabernacle and the ambo or church lecturn. The rectangular facade features three arched portals, a belfry and three mullioned windows, the center one being double-slit while the side windows are single-slit. The central portal is adorned with cosmateque mosaic work while the external left wall features hanging arches supported by nenfro pilasters and corbels as well as ten mullioned windows. High upon the central wall lies a Lombardic rose window which corresponds to the oculus or small oval shaped window on the opposing wall. The three apses rest solidly upon the cliff (the central apse is polygonal while the side ones are irregularly circular) and the cathedral walls are supported by diagonal buttresses. Several epigraphs and inscriptions on the church wall document its history relating facts of financing, clergy, contributing craftsmen and artists as well as city politics between the 12th and 13th century.

XII-XIII) dà accesso al borgo, salendo da Fontana Nova e dal fiume Marta; presenta a sinistra una bertesca, nel sottarco superiore la piombatoia, in alto due fori tamponati, già per i supporti di un castelletto ligneo. Sulla destra la porta si addossa a una porzione delle mura altomedievali.

Between the 12th and 13th centuries, the entrance way to the borgo, climbing up from the Fontana Nova and the Marta River, was through a semi-circled archway. On the left lay a small defense tower and at the apex of the interior portion of the arch rest the “piombatoia”, the lead crest. Above the arch, two filled-in holes can be seen which were once used for the wooden scaffolding during construction. On the right, the archway is set against a portion of wall that dates back to the early Middle Ages.

07 Belvedere della Ripa 06 Fontana Nova Un ampio vascone coperto da volte a botte è delimitata sul fondo da una parete in macco a m. 2 c. dalla roccia. Il prospetto è formato da sei archi che poggiano su tozze colonne sormontate da capitelli fogliati. Sul muro di fondo, al centro della luce di ogni arco, si impostavano le sei cannelle che ricevono acqua da un condotto che, scorrendo dietro la cortina, si raccordava con il cunicolo sotterraneo. Risalente al pontificato di Onorio II (1124-30) e coeva alla vicina S. Maria in Castello, fu nota all’origine come Fontana Antica. Dalla città, attraverso la Porta Falsa o del Fiore, per un camminamento lungo un costone roccioso - via coperta - si raggiungeva la principale fonte di approvvigionamento idrico della città. Alla fine del sec. XIV la fontana fu sottoposta a lavori di ristrutturazione, con la costruzione di un lavatoio e di una vasca (inguaççatoro) da utilizzare per tenere a bagno gli ortaggi; pertanto venne ribattezzata Fontana Nova. Regolamentata nell’uso dagli Statuti dell’arte degli Ortolani (1379), citata negli Statuti di Corneto (1436) forse in stato di abbandono, nel 1545 (Statuti) venne affidata agli ortolani e ai calzolai, affinché provvedessero annualmente alla pulitura e al buon funzionamento della stessa. Nei secc. XVI-XVII fu realizzata la cisterna, addossata al lato sinistro della costruzione, deviando così il corso originario dell’acqua e alterando l’uso della fontana. La chiusura della Porta Falsa (sec. XVII) e il conseguente abbandono della via coperta segnarono il declino della struttura. Nel 1965 il Gruppo Archeologico Tarquiniese, su testimonianze storiche (Polidori, Croniche; Dasti, Notizie) dopo avere ispezionato un lungo tratto del cunicolo di adduzione dell’acqua, ha dato inizio a interventi di ripristino. Dal 1994 l’Associazione Fontana Nova ha curato il definitivo recupero del monumento e dell’area circostante.

It consists of a large basin, covered by a barrel-vaulted ceiling and bordered on the bottom by a wall of “macco” which is embedded into the cliff by approximately 2 mtrs. The facade is formed of six arches which are supported by squatted columns surmounted by capitals in a leaf motif. On the back wall, where the light shines through beneath each arch, lay the six waterspouts which were furnished with water by a duct which ran along behind the wall until it reached the underground pipelines. The fountain dates back to the time of Pope Honorius (1124-30) contemporarily with the nearby Santa Maria in Castello and it was originally known as the “Fontana Antica” (Ancient Fountain). Coming from within the city, one would pass through the Porta Falsa, also known as the Gateway of the Flowers, for a long walk along the ridge next to the cliffs which was called the Via Coperta, in order to reach the main water supply for the city. At the end of the 14th century the fountain was restructured and a washing trough was added, along with another basin utilized for soaking vegetables. Thus the name was changed to Fontana Nova (New Fountain). Usage of the Fountain was regulated in the “Statuti dell'arte degli Ortolani” (1379). The Fountain was again cited in the “Statuti di Corneto” (1436), perhaps because it was in an abandoned state. In 1545 (Statuti) was entrusted to the city farmers and shoe makers upon the condition that they tend to the annual cleaning and maintenance of the fountain. Between the 16th and 17th centuries a cistern, or artificial reservoir was constructed on the left side of the fountain, which deviated the original flow of water, altering the usage of the fountain. With the closing of the Porta Falsa of the city in the 17th century and the consequential abandonment of the Via Coperta, the Fontana Nova fell into decline. In 1965 the Archaeological Group of Tarquinia began researching historical information relating to the fountain (Polidori, Croniche; Dasti, Notizie) and after having inspected the lengthy tract of former pipeline, decided to begin the restoration of Fontana Nova. In 1994 the Association of Fontana Nova finally completed the fountain restoration project and repristined the surrounding area.

L’Archivio Storico Comunale ha sede nel Palazzetto di S. Spirito, edificio del sec. XV: è infatti questo il periodo di maggior importanza dell’ospedale cornetano dell’Ordine del S. Spirito in Saxia, quando era priore a Corneto Pietro Matteo, che fu anche priore dell’Ordine. Nella facciata è evidente la compresenza di elementi rinascimentali e gotici.

A pianta quadrata e merlata - di proprietà comunale -, ha il paramento murario a conci di macco disposti in corsi orizzontali, legati con calce, sabbia e pozzolana (sec. XI). La porta a arco a tutto sesto è sopraelevata rispetto al piano stradale; un’altra porta con arco a tutto sesto si trova sotto il piano di calpestio. Nell’alzato presenta monofore, una bifora e una porta tamponata.

The Community Historical Archives are located within the “Palazzetto of S. Spirito”, a 15th century building which played a major role as the hospital of Corneto. It was owned by the Order of S. Spirito in Saxia, under the direction of the ruling monastic officer of Corneto, Pietro Matteo who was later the Monastic Officer of the entire Order. The facade features an intermingling of both Renaissance and Gothic architectural elements.

Fontanili, lavatoi, abbeveratoi (Fountains, former Washing Houses and Drinking Fountains) Dai documenti si evince che, non essendo ancora la città (inizi sec. XX) dotata di idonee reti idriche e fognarie, l'amministrazione comunale deliberò di risolvere il problema con un unico progetto di risanamento (1902, C. Crispini; dal 1912 P. Magnani).

Tra le opere realizzate notevoli due abbeveratoi e lavatoi (1902-04): il maggiore - distrutto, a pianta rettangolare con pilastri di pietra e in muratura; il paramento esterno dell'abbeveratoio in peperino presso il belvedere di S. Antonio; il secondo di dimensioni ridotte - ampliato 1929 - in piazza S. Stefano (vedi punto 10), in origine intonacato a mezzatinta chiara, ha un getto d’acqua - perduta la protome leonina da cui usciva - che cade in una coppa di ghisa al centro di una nicchia, per poi riversarsi nella sottostante vasca dell’abbeveratoio. Distrutto anche il terzo abbeveratoio di via Montana (1909-10).

This 11th century tower was constructed on a square foundation and utilizes an embattled architectural style. It is now under the jurisdiction of the city government. The battlement parapet is constructed using “macco” stones placed horizontally and held in place by a type of cement made of lime, sand and “pozzolana”. The doorway consists of a semi-circular archway and is raised above the street level. In the upper portions of the tower slit and double slit windows can be seen in addition to a sealed-up door.

Based on documentation from the early 20th century, before Tarquinia was yet a real township, but having adequate water supplies and sanitation facilities, the municipal government decided to approach the task of taking care of its citizens by launching a single health and sanitation project.

(Initiated in 1902 by C. Crispini and continued in 1912 by P. Magnani). Among the many works that were initiated, two communal washing houses with drinking fountains are particularly noted (1902-04).

The larger one was destroyed but once had a rectangular base with stone pillars embedded in the wall. The exterior facing of the drinking fountain was formed with the mineral rock known as “peperino” and stood in what is now the overlook at the church of San Antonio. The second washing house and drinking fountain was much smaller but was later enlarged in 1929 and now stands in the square of Santo Stefano. Originally it was plastered in a light half-tone color and once had a leonine or a lion figure on the spicket where water flowed forth. The water fell into a cast iron basin at the centre of the niche which then overflowed into the stone fountain basin below. The third washing house and fountain was also destroyed, but once stood in Via Montana (1909-10) di via Montana (1909-10).

Decorata nella parte superiore da cornice di nenfro con mensoloni aggettanti, presenta base a bugnato con conci rettangolari in cui si apre un portale con arco a sesto acuto, in parte tamponato.

It was constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries, built upon a rectangular base and attached at the corner to a two-storey building. The wall surfaces are smooth and constructed of squared “macco” stone seamed together with a cement mixture of lime, sand and the mineral “pozzolana”. It is decorated in the upper section of the “nenfro” cornice with large jutting shelf-like tablets. The base of the tower is of hewn stone rectangular blocks, out of which a semi-circled, now partially sealed arched door opens.

12 Palazzo dei Priori É un palazzo che sicuramente ha avuto un ruolo importante nella vita pubblica dell'antica città, anche se la denominazione di Palazzo dei Priori, attribuitagli dallo storico L. Dasti, non trova riscontro nelle fonti. Derivante dall'accorpamento di vari edifici privati, in gran parte databili ai secc. XII-XIII, è attualmente in parte proprietà e sede della Società Tarquiniense d'Arte e Storia (STAS) e in parte proprietà di privati. I lati sono chiusi da torri, che contribuiscono a conferire al palazzo un aspetto maestoso di edificio fortificato. La parte del palazzo di proprietà della STAS che prospetta su via delle Torri ospita il Museo della Ceramica d'uso a Corneto, mentre la Sala Sacchetti in via dell'Archetto è spesso sede di manifestazioni culturali.

This building surely played a prominent role in the public life of the ancient city even though the name “Palazzo dei Priori” (The Ancient Town Hall), which was attributed by the noted historian, L. Dasti reveals no historical evidence. The denomination stems from the unification of various private buildings which were mostly dated back between the 12th and 13th centuries. Currently, the structure is partially owned by the Tarquinian Society of Art and History (STAS) and is partially private property. The structure is enclosed by towers which confer upon the building a sense of majesty. The portion of the Art and Historical Society which faces the street, “Via delle Torri” houses the Ceramic Museum of artifacts used in Corneto, while the “Sala Sacchetti” is a quaint hall which can be reached from “Via dell’Archetto” and often hosts various cultural events and art exhibitions.

14 Chiesa di S. Pancrazio

This tower is constructed for the magistrates (12th-13th centuries), which obliged the use of an architectural continuity with respect to the surrounding edifices. There is a square floor plan with a wall facing made of “macco” stones placed horizontally and cemented with a mixture of lime, sand and “pozzolana”.

At the base, the wall is smooth and is interrupted by the portal, formed of a semi-circular lowered arch. Two single slit windows are set at the axis of the tower: one with a semi-circular arch decorated by a protruding cornice with an acute curve made of “nenfro” and the second with a semi-circular arch which has been sealed.

Di questa chiesa non si conosce la data esatta della costruzione, anche se la compresenza di elementi romanici e gotici consentono di collocarne l'edificazione tra la fine del sec. XII e l'inizio del XIII. Durante il sec.

XVII vennero eseguite numerose modifiche. Aperta al culto fino ai primi del Novecento, per poi rimanere in stato di abbandono fino agli anni Cinquanta, venne in seguito restaurata, ed ora è saltuariamente sede di eventi culturali quali mostre, conferenze, concerti (Auditorium). Notevoli sono il portale, molto elegante, sormontato da un arco ogivale costituito da più elementi concentrici, alcuni a sezione tonda, altri quadrata, e poggiante su due fasci di lesene e colonnine; la cornice della porta, costituita da una decorazione policroma a mosaico di derivazione cosmatesca il campanile, edificato in epoca successiva, che interrompe il lato sinistro della facciata e si presenta con due ordini di bifore con archi a tutto sesto, su tutti i lati: degna di nota è la cuspide crestata. Interessante anche l'edicola situata sul lato sinistro, con un arco ogivale decorato con un motivo a corda spezzata, il tutto di chiara derivazione normanna. L'interno si presenta con un'unica navata, suddivisa in due campate, in origine entrambe a volta, mentre attualmente la copertura, ancora a volta nel presbiterio, rialzato rispetto al resto della chiesa, è invece in legno nel resto dell'edificio.

The precise date of construction of this church is not known, yet the coexistence of both Romanesque and Gothic elements places the edifice between the end of the 12th and the beginning of the 13th centuries.

During the 17th century the structure underwent many modifications, remaining relgiously active until the beginning of the 1900s. It was then abandoned until the 1950s, when it was completely renovated and has since served as a lovely space for cultural events including art exhibitions, conferences and concerts (The Auditorium). The elegant portal of the facade is particularly noteworthy and is adorned with ogive-curved or pointed arches consisting of various concentric elements, some being rounded and others squared. The arches are supported by two bands of pilasters and small columns. The cornice of the doorway is decorated with a multi-colored cosmatesque inlay. The bell tower was added in the succeeding era and it breaks the line of the facade on the left side of the church. It features two styles of mullioned or double-paned windows with rounded arches on both sides of the tower, of which the crested cusps are particularly noteworthy. Another poignant architectural delight is the kiosk situated to the left of the tower with a pointed arch (ogive-curved), decorated with a broken cord motif, indicative of the Norman architectural style. The interior of the church features a single nave, subdivided into two bays, originally both with vaulted ceilings. The current roof remains vaulted but only above the presbytery - slightly raised with respect to the remainder of the church, which is now covered with a wooden roof.

The first floor features an open gallery area with two archways, two mullioned between two single lancet windows.

Built between the11th and 12th centuries, is located in an isolated area near “Campo Cialdi” on the north-western border of the city, overlooking the Marta Valley and the buttress of the Castle. The external wall surfaces are smooth and constructed of “macco” stones laid in horizontal rows, seamed together with a cement mixture, “pozzolana”. The tower features a semi-circled arched door situated above street level with slitted windows.

L'impostazione architettonica è romanica, ma i molti interventi subiti nel corso del tempo, testimoniati dalla compresenza di varie influenze stilistiche (dalla pisana, nella cornice bicroma della facciata e nella finestra circolare nel timpano, alla meridionale, araba, nel sesto rialzato, alla settentrionale, negli archetti dell'abside maggiore e nella serie di arcatelle della facciata), ne hanno mutato l'aspetto sia all'interno che all'esterno. L'interno è suddiviso in tre navate da coppie di pilastri e lungo la navata di sinistra si può vedere ciò che resta di un affresco del sec. XV raffigurante S. Anna e la Vergine col Bambino.

Is probably the most ancient church of Tarquinia.

Although the architectural structure is Romanesque in style, the church has undergone many alterations throughout history which are reflected in the variety of styles, represented both internally and externally: the bichromatic facade and the circular windows in the tympanum from Pisan architecture, the rising arches from Arab influences in southern Italy, the arches in the main apse as well as the series of arches in the facade from northern Italy. The interior of the church is divided into three naves supported by matching pairs of columns. Along the wall of the nave on the left lies the remains of a 15th century fresco representing S.Anna and the Virgin with Child.

18 Chiesa dell’Annunziata

L'esterno di questa piccola chiesa si presenta con un fronte a capanna, con una cornice che corre lungo l'intera facciata dividendola in due: al di sopra spicca il rosone riccamente decorato, nella parte inferiore il portale, incorniciato da una serie di archi concentrici e con la ghiera bicroma, in macco (pietra di origine organica sedimentaria tipica della zona) e nenfro. Nella parte posteriore sono visibili le tre absidi. All'interno un'unica navata divisa in due campate e con copertura a crociere con archi a tutto sesto. Da notare il transetto aggettante dal corpo della chiesa, probabilmente aggiunto all'opera originaria, che presumibilmente aveva pianta ad aula, con una sola abside.

Piccola chiesa risalente al sec. XII, con facciata molto lineare ed un unico portale sormontato da un arco: più interessante il retro, con l'abside che reca segni di diverse influenze stilistiche: di derivazione lombarda negli archetti pensili e di impronta pisana nella serie di decorazioni a losanghe modanate. L'interno è costituito da un'unica navata con copertura a capriate e terminante in un'abside al cui interno è visibile un affresco della fine del sec. XV raffigurante il Salvatore, mentre lungo le pareti sono ancora presenti tracce di dipinti più antichi: sulla parete di destra è ancora riconoscibile un'immagine della Vergine.

Chiesa di S. Giacomo

Chiesa in stile romanico che dalla fine del sec. XII fino alla fine del XVI era annessa ad un convento di monache del terzo Ordine di S. Francesco, per poi essere affidata, dopo un restauro, ai frati Minori Conventuali. Nel sec. XVIII la chiesa risulta sconsacrata, ma sul finire dello stesso secolo venne adibita a cappella del cimitero pubblico, per il quale fu edificato il recinto tuttora presente dinanzi alla facciata. Mantenne tale funzione ancora nel sec.

XIX. Da notare la cupola a pianta ellittica di evidente derivazione araba, caratteristica di questa costruzione. Ormai sconsacrata e di proprietà del comune, ospita spesso attività culturali.

This small 12th century church is decorated with a very linear facade and a single portal adorned with an arch. The posterior portion of the church with an apse bearing evidence of many different stylistic influences is distinctly more interesting. The over-hanging arches have been influenced by Lombardy while the diamond-shaped motif of the molding is clearly from Pisa. The interior of the church consists of a single nave with a roof construction known as “capriata” or truss. In the apse the remains of a 15th century fresco depicting “Il Salvatore” can still be seen, while along the walls of the church remain traces of yet more antique paintings. On the right hand wall the image of the Virgin is still discernible.

The exterior of this small church consists of a doublesloped frontal with a cornice running the entire length of the facade, dividing it into two sections. The upper portion is richly decorated with an ornate rose window while the lower portion features the portal, framed by a ring of concentric arches which are bichromatic in macco (a type of stone composed of compressed organic sediment which is typical to the area) and nenfro (a kind of volcanic stone). In the posterior portion of the church there are three apses which are readily distinguishable. Within the church there is a single nave divided into two bays with a single X shaped pattern on the roof with rounded arches. It is interesting to note that the transept which juts out from the main body of the church was most probably a later addition to the church, whereby the original layout included only a large hall with a single apse.

Chiesa del Salvatore

This Romanesque style church, built between the end of the 12th to the end of the 16th century was used as a convent for monks belonging to the third Order of Saint Francis. Thereafter, it was restored and entrusted to the Minori Conventuali Fraternita or Brotherhood. During the 18th century the church was deconsecrated but at the end of the same century it was used as a chapel for the public cemetary until the 19 century. As such, a wall was constructed surrounding the front of the church which is still standing today. The church dome is quite remarkable due to its elliptical layout which is indiciative of Arab influences. It is currently deconsecrated and is part of the municipal patrimony being often used for cultural events.

CENTRO STORICO OLD TOWN 21 Palazzo Comunale Town Hall La sede municipale di Corneto risale al sec. XIII e si colloca sul precedente tracciato delle mura fortificate, a testimonianza dell'avvenuta espansione della città attorno alle chiese e conventi degli Ordini mendicanti sorti all'esterno della cinta muraria. Parte della prima cinta muraria (coincidente con il tracciato moderno Barriera S. Giusto, corso Vittorio Emanuele II e Alberata D. Alighieri) è la torre collocata all'interno del palazzo, databile ai secc. X-XI: a pianta quadrata, con muratura a conci di macco, internamente divisa a solai. L'edificio si presenta con due fronti: uno su via S. Pancrazio e l'altro, il principale, su Piazza Matteotti. Lo stile originario prevalente è il romanico, anche se con qualche presenza di elementi gotici, e nonostante i ripetuti interventi successivi di restauro ed ampliamento conserva una certa omogeneità. Particolarmente consistenti gli interventi del sec.

XVI, necessari a causa di un incendio che nel 1476 aveva gravemente danneggiato la struttura: comportò un ampliamento sul lato ovest dell'edificio ed un accurato intervento sul fronte di Piazza Matteotti. L'accesso su via S. Pancrazio, con portale in peperino e scalinata, venne realizzato nel sec. XIX per facilitare l'accesso al Teatro Comunale, la cui sede era nell'attuale Sala Consiliare. Il teatro venne chiuso definitivamente intorno agli anni '40 del XX secolo e negli anni '60 venne realizzata in suo luogo la Sala Consiliare. Dal lato di Piazza Matteotti notare l'arco che sottostà al palazzo, mettendo in comunicazione la Piazza con la retrostante via S. Pancrazio, e la grande loggia poggiante sull'arcone a tutto sesto sottostante: datata 1366, in origine era soltanto un terrazzo, la cui scalinata d'accesso venne realizzata successivamente e la copertura nel sec. XVII. Altro intervento, risalente al restauro del sec. XVI, riguarda la torre civica. Su tutta la facciata sono presenti numerose lapidi riguardanti eventi e personaggi legati alla città, nonché un'asta di ferro murata, con funzione di unità di misura per evitare controversie tra i cittadini. L'edificio attualmente ospita i vari uffici comunali.

The municipal seat of Corneto dates back to the 13th century and was once enclosed by the original fortified wall of the city, demonstrating the expansion of the city to include the churches, convents and monasteries of various mendicant. Orders which were priorly located outside the city walls. Portions of the original wall which followed the modern day Barriera S. Giusto, the street of Vittorio Emanuele II and Alberata D. Alghieri also included the tower located within the town hall, dating between the 10th and 11th centuries, which is set on a square foundation built of squared “macco” stones and divided into various floors. The municipal building has two entrances - one which faces S. Pancrazio and the other, being the main entrance, opens out onto Matteotti Square. The original predominant architectural motif is Romanesque and even though the building contains a smatter of Gothic elements, it has maintained a homogeneous style despite the consecutive restorations and additions. Restorations during the 16th century were essential due to a fire in 1476 which seriously damaged the structure. Consequently, there was a major extension made to the edifice on the west side of the building as well as painstaking restoration work done to the main entrance facing Matteotti Square. The entranceway from S. Pancrazio is composed of a portal made of “peperino” stone and includes a grand stairway which was built in the 19th century in order to facilitate easier access to the Community Theatre which was originally where the Town Hall Council Chamber now stands. The theater was finally closed in the 1940s and the Council Chamber was built in its stead. Entering from Matteotti Square it is interesting to note the grand archway which lies beneath the Town Hall and connects the square to the street of S. Pancrazio. It is a loggia or roofed open gallery which is supported by a large rounded arch that dates back to 1366. Originally it was only a terrace or balcony and the grand stairway was added at a later date along with the archway roof which was built successively in the 17th century. Additional modifications were made to the tower when the building was restored during the 16th century. The facade is covered with numerous plaques pertaining to historical events and important figures in the life of Corneto-Tarquinia, not to mention an iron measuring rod fixed to the wall which once served to avoid disputes between fellow citizens. Currently the building houses the various city government offices to serve the community.

21 Sala Consiliare Town Council Meeting Hall L'attuale Sala Consiliare venne realizzata negli anni '60 dello scorso secolo, dopo aver demolito le strutture preesistenti di quello che era stato il Teatro Comunale. Si presenta come un'ampia aula, con copertura a capriate in legno, le cui finestre si affacciano su entrambi i lati del Palazzo, sulla Piazza e su via S. Pancrazio.

Alla destra della porta d'ingresso sono visibili i resti di un affresco proveniente dalla Sala Capitolare del convento di S. Marco, distaccato ed ivi trasferito per riportare alla luce un altro affresco più antico ad esso sottostante, entrambi rappresentanti una crocifissione con santi. Sulla parete di fronte si possono ammirare tre grandi opere (pastello su carta) del pittore cileno S. Matta (Perché le vittime vincano, 1974), donate dall'autore al comune di Tarquinia per la Sala Consiliare nel 1975, nonché i resti di un affresco, testimonianza dell'antica cappella del palazzo. Oltre ad essere la sede del Consiglio comunale, la Sala spesso ospita eventi culturali quali conferenze, convegni, concerti ed eventi legati al prestigioso Premio Cardarelli.

The present day town council meeting hall was completed in the 1960s after having demolished the pre-existing structure which had been the Community Theatre. It is a large hall with a truss roof structure with large windows facing both sides of the building looking out on the Square and on Via San Pancrazio. To the right of the main entrance way lie the remains of a fresco which was formerly in the Capitulary Hall in the convent of S. Marco, detached from the wall in the convent in order to reveal an even more antique fresco beneath. Both of the frescos depict the crucifixion of a saint. On the front wall of the meeting hall, three great masterpieces can be admired featuring pastels on paper done by the Chilean artist S. Matta entitled “Perchè le vittime vincano” (Why the Victims Win), painted in 1974 and the remains of another antique fresco which shows the ancient chapel of the former structure. The pastel work was donated to the city of Tarquinia for the Council Chambers in 1975. In addition to being the seat of the city council meetings, the hall often hosts cultural events such as conferences, conventions, concerts and Prose and Poetry Competitions such as the prestigious “Premio Cardarelli” for excellence in literature.

Le pareti sono tutte affrescate con episodi e personaggi della storia cornetana e questi dipinti sono databili tra i secc. XVI e XVII: sembra siano opera di C. Donati, ma la documentazione dell'Archivio Storico riporta anche i nomi di altri artisti che vi prestarono la loro opera negli anni 1629-36, mentre ulteriori interventi si ebbero sul finire del sec. XVIII. Tra il 1980 ed il 1981 venne eseguito un importante restauro.

This hall was once utilized for the town council meetings and currently serves as the antechambers or waiting hall for the mayor’s offices. The walls are completely covered in frescos which were painted between the 16th and 17th centuries, depicting various episodes and prominent figures in the history of Corneto. Evidence indicates that the frescos were painted by C. Donati but records from the Historical Archives reveal the names of other artists who also contributed to the work between 1629 and 1636. The final additions to the frescos occurred at the end of the 18th century and between 1980 and 1981 a significant restoration took place.

La fontana monumentale collocata in Piazza Matteotti, di fronte al Palazzo Comunale, è composta da una vasca circolare in marmo, attorno al cui bordo si collocano quattro alzate, pure in marmo con mascheroni barbuti posti ai due lati, dai quali cadono due getti d'acqua al centro cinque elementi in peperino che formano una sorta di scogli, in capo ai quali si trovano quattro mensoloni. Negli spazi fra i mensoloni sono riportati degli stemmi: sul lato verso il Corso Vittorio Emanuele lo stemma di papa Innocenzo XIII Conti, sul lato nord, verso il Palazzo Comunale, quello del Card. R. Imperiali, sul lato sud lo stemma di Corneto, mentre sul lato est è riportata un'epigrafe che riporta come il Card. Imperiali, Prefetto del Buon Governo, avesse portato a termine il nuovo acquedotto nell'anno 1724. Nelle volute inferiori dei mensoloni sono collocati dei mascheroni, dai quali esce un sottile getto d'acqua che va a cadere in quattro conchiglie sottostanti. Al di sopra dei mensoloni si trova il basamento della colonna centrale, sormontata da una croce, al cui piedistallo sono quattro aquile che si fronteggiano due a due. La tradizione vuole che provenga da Palestrina, asportata nel 1435 dal Card. G. Vitelleschi, dopo aver distrutto la città, mentre in realtà si tratta di un'opera del sec. XVIII, precisamente realizzata tra il 1723 ed il 1725 su disegno dell'architetto F. Barigioni, che diresse anche i lavori per la sua realizzazione, eseguiti in appalto dallo scultore F. Pincellotti. Nel 1724 risulta terminato il nuovo acquedotto, costruito per sopperire alle carenze idriche della città, noto come “arcatelle”, ancora visibile lungo la strada che da Tarquinia porta a Monteromano: saranno le acque portate in città da questa condotta ad alimentare la fontana fino al 1870, anno in cui l'acquedotto settecentesco viene abbandonato ed entra in funzione il nuovo condotto. Durante tutti questi lunghi anni e fino a non molti anni fa la fontana di piazza, accanto alla funzione decorativa e monumentale, ha costantemente svolto anche un ruolo determinante nella vita dei cittadini, che vi si sono sempre approvvigionati d'acqua .

This monumental fountain, located in “Piazza Matteotti” square, right in front of the Town Municiple Building and consists of a large circular marble basin surrounded on its border by four elevated water sprouts, also made of marble. On either side of the fountain there are two “mascheroni” or sculptured decorations, each depicting the face of a bearded man with open mouth from which water flows. In the center there are five elements in “peperino” which together form a sort of rock, upon which four stone corbels are placed. In the spaces between the corbels there are four coats of arms. The side facing the main street (Vittorio Emanuele) features the seal of Pope Innocent XIII, while the northern side towards the Town Hall shows the seal of Cardinal R. Imperiali. On the southern side rests the coat of arms of Corneto, whereas the eastern side features an epigraph describing how Cardinal Imperiali, Prefect of the Good Government, brought to fruition the new acquaduct in the year 1724. The “mascheroni” are fixed to the lower volutes of the pedestal where subtle streams of water flow from the opened mouths into four shells below. Above the brackets lies the base of the central column which is surmounted by a cross upon which rest four eagles - facing each other in pairs. Tradition dictates that the fountain comes from Palestrina and was removed from there in 1435 by Cardinal G. Vitelleschi after having destroyed the city.

However, the truth states that the fountain was created in the 18th century, more precisely between 1723 and 1725 based on a design by the architect, F. Barigioni who also directed the work himself, as it was assigned to the sculptor F. Pincellotti. In 1724 the new acquaduct was completed in order to compensate for a city water shortage and nominated the “arcatelle” which can still be seen along the road running from Tarquinia to Monteromano. It was the workings of this acquaduct that supplied water for the fountain until 1870 when the 17th century acquaduct was abandoned in favor of the newer modern pipelines. Throughout the course of these many years and up until recently, the Fountain in the Plaza, in addition to serving an aesthetic monumental function, has constantly played a determining role in the life of the citizens, ensuring them of a steadfast water supply.

Costruita per la munificenza di alcuni cittadini (1751-61) e consacrata dal Vescovo S. Giustiniani, ha la facciata tardo barocca con andamento concavo - convesso e due ordini architettonici binati e sovrapposti. Ha una navata, con pianta ottagonale, originata da un quadrato, i cui angoli sono tagliati da muri obliqui, presenta nella copertura dell'area centrale otto spicchi di dimensioni diverse. Notevoli l'organo e tra i dipinti su tela la Madonna e le anime del Purgatorio in preghiera (sec. XVIII; sull'altare).

Constructed with donations from various citizens (1751-61), the church was consecrated by Bishop S. Giustiniani. The church facade is decorated in a late Baroque style with a modulation of concave and convex forms supported by two matching architectural orders (columns). It contains a central nave amidst an octagonal floor plan, which is based on a square in which the angles are cut by an oblique wall. This design is reflected in the center of the ceiling with eight segments, each of a different dimension. There is a remarkable organ and some magnificent paintings (18th century).

25 Chiesa della Ss. Trinità Fondata nel sec. XIII, ricostruita tra secc. XVI e XVII, fino al 1631 ospitò la Confraternita della Trinità. A una navata, ampliata in stile neoclassico e poi abbandonata fino al 1841, passò alla Confraternita della Misericordia. E’ legata ai riti della Settimana Santa.

This church was founded in the 13th century and reconstructed between the 16th and 17th centuries, enlarging it with a neoclassical style. Up to and until 1631 the church was home to the Trinity Brotherhood and was then abbandoned until 1841 when it became home to the Merciful Brotherhood. It now plays a major role in the rituals performed during the Holy Week before Easter.

This church was built in 1746 and managed by the ‘Servants of Saint Mary of Valverde’. It was restructured from1756-61 by G. D. and F. Navone. Important works of art within include Guardian Angel (oil on canvas, G. Romanelli, XVII century) and the tomb of Cardinal A. M. Quail 1872 (architect: Vespignani V).

28 Chiesa e Convento di S. Francesco (Church and Convent of Saint Francis) La chiesa venne edificata tra la fine del sec. XIII e l'inizio del XIV, sembra in seguito ad un miracolo di S. Francesco, nei pressi del luogo in cui sorgeva un oratorio dedicato alla Trinità e fu sempre officiata dai frati Minori Francescani.

A partire dall'inizio del sec. XVI l'edificio è stato oggetto di numerosi interventi di restauro, che ne hanno completamente modificato l'aspetto: nel 1959 un restauro integrale è stato effettuato dalla Soprintendenza ai Beni architettonici per il Lazio, riportando la costruzione ad una maggiore coerenza con il progetto originario. É evidente la coesistenza di elementi gotici (in particolare all'interno) e romanici (soprattutto nella facciata). La suddivisione in tre settori della facciata riporta quella interna in tre navate: nel settore di mezzo, più alto degli altri, è il portale principale, costituito da quattro archi ogivali concentrici e rientranti, di chiara matrice gotica, sormontato da un rosone decorato ancora evidentemente romanico. I due settori laterali sono sormontati da archetti lombardi: particolare notevole sono i primi sei archetti del settore destro, unici a sesto acuto. Il campanile fu costruito nel 1612, sembra in sostituzione di un precedente campanile a vela, probabilmente con tre campane. L'interno è suddiviso in tre navate di cinque campate ciascuna, quelle centrali doppie di quelle laterali, con transetto di poco rialzato e tre absidi sul fondo. Sul lato destro sono presenti cinque cappelle, aggiunte tra il sec. XV ed il XVI: la cappella del Beato Giovanni da Triora, la cappella dell'Immacolata, la cappella di S. Antonio da Padova, la cappella del Presepe e quella dei Caduti, la più recente. Del convento, i cui locali sono stati sede del Liceo Scientifico Galileo Galilei fino alla fine degli anni Settanta e che ora ospita i frati dell'Immacolata, degni di nota sono il chiostro ed il pozzo rinascimentale presente nel giardino.

The church was built between the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th and seems to have emerged due to a miracle performed by S.Francesco. Legend has that the miracle occurred in the area where an oratory, dedicated to the Trinity, once stood and from which monks from the “frati Francescani Minori” were known to have lead services. At the beginning of the 16th century the church underwent many renovations in order to restore the building, completely altering its original structure. In 1959 the Superintendent for Architechtural Conservation in Lazio ordered that the church be totally restored as closely as possible to its original design. The structure entertwines both Gothic (particularly inside the church) and Romanesque (mostly in the facade) architectural motifs. The facade is divided into three sections which is reflected within the church by the three naves. In the center section, higher than those on either side, lies the main portal which is adorned with four ogive-curved concentric recessed arches which are clearly Gothic in style. Above the portal there is a large decorative rose window which is definitely influenced by Romanesque architecture. The two lateral sections are both crowned with a series of arches indicative of Lombardy. The right side section of the facade is of particular note with its pattern of six arches which are the only ones with pointed arches. The bell tower was constructed in 1612 replacing a former tower, probably bearing three bells. The interior of the church is divided into three naves or aisles with five bays each. The central nave is twice the width of the side aisles with the transept slightly raised, leading to three apses at the end of the church. The right side is adorned with five chapels which were added between the 15th and 16th centuries. They are: the chapel of the “Beato Giovanni” da Triora, the chapel of the “Immacolata”, the chapel of “S. Antonio da Padova”, the chapel of the “Presepe” and that of the “Caduti”, which is the most recent. The convent was utilized as the Scientific High School, Galileo Galilei, until the end of the 1970s when it became home to the “Frati dell’Immacolata” (Friars of the Immaculate).

The Renaissance style cloisters and well, situated in the gardens, are remarkably beautiful and worthy of note.

31 Casa natale di V. Cardarelli Birthplace of V. Cardarelli È un edificio che si affaccia su un piccolo cortile separato dalla via da un alto muro con un cancello di accesso sormontato da un arco a tutto sesto e circondato da una cornice in macco leggermente in rilievo in cui è evidenziata la chiave di volta dell'arco. Accanto all'ingresso una lapide in marmo ricorda che in quella casa il 1 maggio 1887 è nato V. Cardarelli (Corneto-Tarquinia 1887- Roma 1959). Poeta, saggista e prosatore, fondatore, insieme a R. Bacchelli, E. Cecchi ed altri intellettuali attivi a Roma negli anni Venti del Novecento, della rivista La Ronda (1919-23), è noto soprattutto per le poesie e per le note autobiografiche, in particolare sui numerosi viaggi.

This structure is flanked by a small courtyard separated from the road by a high wall with an entrance gateway.

Above the gate rests a rounded arch which is encompassed by a cornice, created from macco stonework which is decorated in a low relief and upon which the keystone is highlighted. Next to the entranceway rests a marble plaque which narrates that in this house on May 1st, 1887 V. Cardarelli was born (Corneto-Tarquinia, 1887 - Rome, 1959). He was a noted Poet, Essayist and Prose Writer as well as Founder - together with R. Bacchelli and E. Cecchi of other intellectual activities in Rome during the 1920s. He was also responsibile for the noted magazine, “La Ronda” (1919-1923) and above all for his poetry and his autobiographical notes - in particular those regarding his numerous travels.

33 Convento delle Suore Passioniste

Consacrata nel 1635, appartiene alla Confraternita di S. Giuseppe, e (dal 1987) anche all’Associazione dei Fratelli del Cristo Risorto. A una sola navata, all’interno notevole la statua lignea processionale del Cristo risorto (1831, B. Canini).

L'edificio comprendente la chiesa ed il convento delle suore passioniste venne edificato tra il 1759 ed il 1771, su iniziativa di S. Paolo della Croce e col consenso del Vescovo di Corneto, S. Giustiniani. Il nome di chiesa della Presentazione, con cui questo tempio è conosciuto, è dovuto all'immagine della Vergine con Santi collocata sull'altare. Piccola e semplice, con un'unica navata, senza una facciata propria, inserita all'esterno nella facciata dell'edificio unico che ospita sia il convento che il tempio. L'ingresso della chiesa si distingue per il portale architravato sormontato da una finestra ad arco: tra la finestra ed il portale la scritta “questa è la casa di Dio”. Nella chiesa una lapide ricorda che qui vennero temporaneamente sepolti Letizia Bonaparte, madre di Napoleone, ed il Cardinale Fesh, zio dell'imperatore.

Consecrated in 1635, it belongs to the Brotherhood of St. Joseph, and (since 1987), to the ‘Fratelli del Cristo Risorto’ (Association of the Brothers of the Resurrected Christ). There is only one nave and houses the statue of the ‘Cristo Risorto’, (the Resurrected Christ), and is opened only when the statue is carried throughout town in the procession on Easter Sunday.

Cappella della Croce (ex-chiesa) (Chapel of the Cross) Risale al sec. XIV, ma la facciata presenta attualmente chiari elementi barocchi: delimitata in larghezza da due lesene che sorreggono una particolare trabeazione con un fregio liscio, sormontata da una cornice e dal timpano arcuato che però termina con linee rette.

Il portale, semplice e lineare, è in nenfro ed è sormontato da una finestra quadrata. Non è più utilizzata come luogo di culto, ma come sede di scuola di catechismo e per altre attività legate alla vita della parrocchia di S. Giovanni Gerosolimitano e S. Leonardo.

Although the chapel dates back to the 14th century, the current facade clearly includes latter day architectural elements from the Baroque period.

These elements are seen in the restricted spacing of the supports where pilasters turn into columns upholding a horizontal beam or trabeation, with a smooth frieze surmounted by a cornice where the enclosed tympanum is curved but finishes with straight lines. The portal is simple and linear in design, made of nenfro and surmounted by a square window. The chapel is no longer used for religious services but is utilized as a catechism school and for other church activities related to the parishes of S. Giovanni Gerosolimitano and S. Leonardo.

(Church of the Presentation and Convent of the Passionist Nuns) This edifice includes both the church and the convent of the Passionist Nuns and was constructed between 1759 and 1771 on the initiative of the presiding monk canonized as “S. Paolo della Croce” and with consensus from the Bishop of Corneto, S. Giustiniani. The name, “Church of the Presentation” by which this temple is known, is taken from a painting of the Virgin together with the Saints gathered around the altar.

The church is small and simple with a single nave and without its own facade. There is a single facade which is the entranceway for both the convent and the temple. The entrance to the church is distinguished by its architraved portal which is surmounted by an arched window. Between the window and the portal the inscription reads, “This is the House of God”. Within the church, a plaque reads that in this holy place, the body of Letizia Bonaparte, mother of Napoleon Bonaparte and Cardinal Fesh, the emperor’s uncle were temporarily buried here.

35 Palazzo Vipereschi (sede dell’Università Agraria di Tarquinia)

Questo edificio viene costruito utilizzando parzialmente la struttura del palazzo rinascimentale dei Vipereschi (sec. XV) e risale agli anni del pontificato di Pio V (1775-99). L'esecuzione fu affidata a P. G. Massei, decano dei Conservatori della città di Roma nel 1782. Sul lato del palazzo che si affaccia su via della Salute è ancora visibile un finestrone con l'insegna della famiglia Vipereschi ed iscrizione. Dal 1627, durante il pontificato di Urbano VIII, il palazzo, trasformato in carcere, iniziò ad ospitare gli ecclesiastici che si erano macchiati di colpe, ed era conosciuto col nome di Ergastolo o Pia Casa di Penitenza. Nel 1728 l'edificio venne restaurato e con l'annessione di Corneto al Regno d'Italia nel 1871 perse la funzione di carcere: nel 1878 divenne la prima sede del Museo Civico, poi divenuto Museo Nazionale, fondato dal Comune e dall'Università Agraria.

Nel 1875 Giuseppe Garibaldi, durante la sua visita alla città, vi venne ospitato: l'episodio è ricordato nell'iscrizione della lapide sottostante al busto dell'eroe risorgimentale collocato sulla facciata dell'edificio. Attualmente è la sede dell'Università Agraria, importante ente che ha principalmente il compito di amministrare i terreni e gli immobili appartenenti alla comunità cittadina, nella tradizione degli usi civici. La facciata si presenta armoniosa, con grande equilibrio nella distribuzione degli elementi formali, e risente dell'influenza neoclassica. Nel corso dei lavori di pulizia dello stabile è stata scoperta una cisterna, della quale per mancanza di fonti storiche non si conosce il periodo di realizzazione. É collocata alla fine del corridoio centrale d'ingresso, al di sotto del piano di calpestio, e composta di tre ambienti: due locali di filtraggio e una camera di conserva, alla quale si accede da un pozzo che si apre sull'attuale piano di pavimentazione. Vipereschi Palace (seat of Tarquinia Agricultural University) This edifice was constructed utilizing part of the pre-existing Renaissance palace of the Vipereschi family from the 15th century and dates back to the period of Pope Pius V (1775-99). The completion of the building was carried out by P.G. Massei, dean of the “Conservatori” of Rome in 1782. One side of the building faces the street “Via della Salute”, with a large window where the Vipereschi coat of arms and an inscription is placed.

In 1627 and continuing through the papacy of Urban VIII, the palace was transformed into a prison for clergymen who had violated ecclesiastical laws and became known as “Ergastolo” or “Pia Casa di Penitenza” (Life imprisonment or The Pious Home of Penitence). In 1728 the building was restored and when Corneto was annexed to the Italian Kingdom in 1871 it ceased to function as a prison. In 1878 the structure became the first home of the Municipal Museum which was soon transformed into the National Museum by the Municipality and the “Università Agraria” (Agrarian University). In 1875 when Giuseppe Garibaldi (deemed one of the makers of Modern Italy) was visiting the city, he was hosted in this same palace. The episode was commemorated with a bust of this Risorgimento hero and recorded in the inscripted plaque beneath it, which now decorates the facade of the building. Currently this building is the seat of the Agrarian University, an important governing body which has the primary responsiblity of administering the communal lands and properties according to the traditions pertaining to Civic Use. The facade of the structure is harmonious in its architectural design, demonstrating great balance between the usage of formal and neoclassical elements. During the course of cleaning the palace, a cistern was discovered. However there has not been sufficient historical evidence to accurately date the water receptacle.

The cistern is located at the end of the central entrance hallway beneath the first floor and consists of three main areas: two sections utilized for filtering the water and one room as sort of a holding tank area. The latter feeds directly into a well which can be accessed from the first floor. 36 Chiesa di S. Giovanni Gerosolimitano Edificata tra la fine del sec. XII e l'inizio del XIII, appartenne dal 1182 all'Ordine dei Cavalieri di Malta. La facciata, con il prospetto a capanna, in cui si evidenzia la suddivisione interna in tre navate, con l'oggetto del corpo centrale più alto rispetto ai laterali è di chiara ispirazione romanica, con evidenti elementi gotici sia nell'elaborato rosone che nel coronamento con archi ogivali del portale centrale e dei due ingressi laterali.

Sia sul lato sinistro che sul destro si aprono tre finestre a feritoia che sul lato sinistro sono a sguincio, per convogliare forzatamente la luce all'interno. Anche il corpo absidale presenta caratteristiche interessanti, con i sei speroni cuspidati con funzione sia di contrafforti che di spinta verso l'alto, di chiara matrice gotica, tra i quali si aprono sette monofore arcuate a tutto sesto. L'interno si presenta suddiviso in tre navate di uguale dimensione, ognuna composta di tre campate. Le navate laterali terminano con due cappelle a pianta poligonale, mentre nella centrale, alle spalle del presbiterio, è collocato il coro. Da notare gli affreschi nella navata destra, in particolare in una lunetta della seconda campata una Pietà recentemente attribuita a Pier Matteo D'Amelia (1448-1508) e scuola.

This church was erected between the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th and since 1182 has belonged to the Order of the Knights of Malta. The facade features a raised gable motif which highlights the subdivision of the interior of the church into three naves with the central overhang being elevated with respect to the lateral aisles. This design is clearly inspired by the Romanesque architectural style with Gothic elements highlighted in the elaborate rose window which crowns the pointed arches adorning the central portal and the two side entrances. There are three slit windows on both the left and right sides of the facade.

However, the windows on the left are askance in order to force the natural light into the church. The apsidal features interesting characteristics with its six spired rostrums for the clergy which function both as a buttresses while conveying the idea of moving upward towards the Divine. These are blatantly Gothic in design and above the rostrums there are seven single-paned rounded arched windows in a curved sequence. As noted, the interior of the church opens into three naves of equal dimensions and each consists of three bays. The side aisles terminate with two chapels set on a polygonal base while the central nave faces the side of the presbytery and leads directly to the choral section. The frescos along the right side nave are particularly noteworthy, especially one which lies in the crescent-shaped opening of the second bay where a “Pieta” is depicted on the wall. It has recently been attributed to Pier Matteo D’Amelia (1448-1508) and his school.

Costituito come Museo diocesano di arte sacra (2001), venne denominato poi (2008) Museo diocesano comunale di arte sacra; infine (2011) MAST. Accolto nel palazzo vescovile, un edificio rinascimentale ingloba preesistenze medievali - di cui restano interessanti decorazioni pittoriche allegoriche murarie, è stato ristrutturato nelle forme attuali a partire dal 1737 dal Card. P. Aldrovandi (1734-52, Vescovo di Montefiascone e Corneto). Situato al piano nobile, il museo è costituito dalla galleria dei ritratti dei prelati illustri e da undici sale - una dedicata al vescovo C. Chenis (1954 - 2010) - dove sono esposti paramenti, oggetti, arredi liturgici, mobilia e dipinti provenienti da edifici di culto del Comune e del territorio (secc. XI - XIX). Notevoli, tra l’altro: Madonna col Bambino del Pastura (Antonio del Massaro, detto il, 1450 c. - ante 1516), S. Antonio tra S. Sebastiano e S. Rocco di M. Trofi (detto il Truffetta, 1480 - 1537), Crocifissione con i SS. Giovanni, Crispino e Crispiniano attr. a B. Cavarozzi (1590-1625), S. Sebastiano attr. a G. F. Romanelli (1610-62) e Compianto sul Cristo morto di T. Conca (1750-1815). Al piano terra si trova l’Archivio diocesano.

MAST (Museum of Sacred Art of Tarquinia) Located in the Palazzo Vescovile Was founded as the Diocesan Museum in 2001. In 2008 it was renamed the “Museo Diocesano Comunale di Arte Sacra” (The Public Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art), and finally in 2011, MAST. The collection is displayed in the Palazzo Vescovile, which is a Renaissance building incorporating pre-existing medieval remnants such as the noteable allegorical wall murals. The present day building began restoration from its medieval origins in 1737 under the direction of Cardinal P. Aldrovandi (1734 - 52 bishop of Montefiascone and Corneto). Located on the first floor are the portraits of illustrious bishops housed in 11 different rooms one of which is dedicated to Bishop C. Chenis (1954-2010), where religious vestments, objects, liturgical ornaments, furniture and paintings are exhibited, all of which have been collected from various religious structures located throughout the city and the surrounding territories (11th-14th centuries). The many noted works include Madonna col Bambino by Pastura (Antonio del Massaro, approx. 1450-1516); Sant’Antonio tra S. Sebastiano e S. Rocco by M. Trofi ( known as Truffetta, 1480-1537); The Crocifissione con i Ss. Giovanni, Crispino and Crispiniano, attributed to B. Cavarozzi (1590-1625); S. Sebastiano, attributed to G. F. Romanelli (1610-62) and The Compianto sul Cristo morto by T. Conca (1750-1815). The ground floor of the museum houses the Archives of the Diocese.

38 Palazzo Bruschi A tre piani con elegante facciata di impronta rinascimentale, prospiciente via Umberto I, fu restaurato da V. Vespignani (metà sec. XIX). Notevoli all’interno le decorazioni pittoriche (G. Folchi, A. Angelini). Attualmente in parte proprietà comunale, restaurato ospita la Biblioteca comunale e il museo della città e del territorio.

The palace consists of three floors with an elegant facade indicative of the Renaissance period and is located on the street known as Via Umberto I. The palace was restructured by V. Vespignani in the mid 1900s. There are remarkable wall paintings which decorate the interior of the palace done by G. Folchi and A. Angelini. Part of the palace is property of the city government and is currently being restored as a public library and museum for the city and surrounding territory.

Chiesa di S. Lucia e Monastero delle Benedettine

La chiesa di S. Lucia venne costruita precedentemente al monastero, nel sec. XV, mentre la costruzione del complesso monastico è del 1563-64. Questo si estende da Porta Maddalena lungo il perimetro delle mura cittadine, ed è costituito da edifici che si affacciano su un chiostro ed un cortile e comprendono l'educandato, il noviziato, la foresteria, la clausura delle monache e l'orto, cui si aggiunge la parte riservata alla scuola media ed al Liceo Socio-Psico-Pedagogico, entrambi Istituti Paritari. Notevoli alcuni dipinti dei secc. XVII e XVIII conservati nel coro, accessibile dalla clausura, ma non aperto al pubblico: una Pietà con S. Giovanni e la Maddalena e un S. Benedetto che intercede presso la Vergine (scuola di V. Camuccini, fine del '700); un'immagine di S. Lucia (G. F. Romanelli, metà del sec. XVIII).

(Church of S. Lucia and the Benedictine Monastery) The church of Saint Lucia was constructed prior to the monastery in the 15th century, whereas the monastic complex was built between 1563 and 1564. This complex extends from Porta Maddalena, following along the perimeter of the city wall and includes various buildings set beside a cloister and a courtyard, encompassing a convent school, a novitiate for initiates into the ecclesiastical orders, the convent guest rooms, the cloisters for nuns and the gardens. Part of the complex within the cloisters houses a private Middle School and Pedagogical High School for the Sociology and Psychology of Teaching. There are noteable paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries which are preserved in the choir chambers which are accessible through the cloisters but are not open to the public. These include the “Pietà” with “S. Giovanni and Maria Maddalena” as well as “S. Benedetto in his intercession with the Virgin” which hails from the school of V. Camuccini at the end of the 1700s. Another painting depicts Saint Lucia and was painted by G. F. Romanelli in the mid 18th century.

(Magdelene Gateway and Defense Tower) (taken from the name of the adjacent church which no longer exists and is now also known as the Dante Tower. After the unification of Italy it was named the Roman Gateway). This entrance way was inserted into the wall after it had already been constructed and was built in three phases between the 12th and the 17th centuries. The first phase saw the completion of the gateway at the same height as the adjacent walls. The second phase (in 1453 under the reign of Nicolò the 5th, whose coat of arms is embedded in the wall) completed three-quarters of the entire construction. The third phase is characterized by a lighter color of stone which was also utilized in the construction of a battlement parapet. The doorway at the left which was designed by the architect F. Laparelli under the reign of Paolo the 5th from 1563-64, replaced the original one which had been built using a bayonet structure and was connected to the Lizza (an enclosed, area just outside the city wall where medieval battles often began). To the right of the Gate lies another passageway which was opened in 1860 by F. Dasti and is aligned with the internal defense towers which remain incompleted.

Chiesa di S. Antonio

La costruzione di questa chiesa risale al sec. XIII e lo stile emergente è chiaramente romanico, con l'interno suddiviso in tre navate da dei pilastri e facciata con fronte a capanna. Caduta completamente in rovina e chiusa al culto dal 1915, ha subito recentemente un restauro integrativo a spese della comunità russa ortodossa, per poter essere nuovamente officiata ad uso della stessa comunità. In concomitanza con il restauro è stata anche sistemata la piazza antistante, sulla quale, a ridosso delle mura si affaccia anche la piccola chiesa di S. Maria del Mare (sec. XV): edificata sembra dai cittadini stessi, su sollecitazione di S. Bernardino da Siena, vi si venerava un'immagine della Vergine, poi trasferita nella chiesa di S. Antonio. Originariamente affidata alle cure di un eremita, nel 1592 venne concessa all'ordine dei Serviti, che la utilizzarono come infermeria, per poi passare nel 1779 alla Congregazione della Disciplina e successivamente ad un privato.

The construction of this church dates back to the 13th century and the emerging architectural style is clearly Romanesque it’s interior is subdivided by pilasters into three small aisles while the facade is adorned with a gabled cornice. The church had previously fallen completely into ruin and had been closed to religious services since 1915. Recently, it has undergone a massive restoration project financed by the Russian Orthodox community. In conjunction with the church restoration, the square in front of the church has also been renewed wherein lies the small church of S. Maria del Mare.

This small chapel dates back to the 15th century and appears to have been constructed by the citizens themselves as sollicited by Saint Bernardino from Siena. The church was dedicated to the Virgin and Her image was venerated therein. However, the painting was then transferred to S. Antonio. Originally the chapel was entrusted to a hermit monk and in 1592 it was conceded to the “Serviti”. Order who used the structure as an infirmary. In 1779 the chapel came under the custody of the Congregation of Discipline and thereafter it was transferred into private hands.

(Convent and Cloister of S. Marco) Founded in the XIII century (restored in the XVII century) by an 'Augustinian Order’ in the ‘Castro Novo’ quarter on the confines of the city walls. The complex is comprised of a church, vestry, tower, and two cloisters and houses the Sacconi Middle School of Music and the Community Library (provisional). The barrel vault of the rectangular Chapter Room is decorated with a fresco of the Crucifixion and Saints. It has been restored and hosts cultural events. The church was restructured in the 1800’s and early 1900’s and was used as a granary and later as a movie theater. It is currently being restructured to convert it into a conference room.

Following a series of complex circumstances, the church with three naves and the ex-convent became the property of the municipality of Tarquinia. The church possesses a striking Byzantine painting of the Madonna, the Patroness of the city of Tarquinia.

Fondato nel sec. XIII (restaurato sec. XVII) dall' Ordine Agostiniano nel terziere di castro novo e contiguo alle mura urbane, comprende chiesa, sagrestia, campanile, due chiostri; nel complesso sono ospitati: le scuole media Sacconi comunale di musica, la biblioteca comunale. La sala capitolare rettangolare con volta a botte decorata da affresco raff. Crocifissione e Santi, restaurata ospita eventi temporanei. La chiesa, rimaneggiata nell’800 e agli inizi del ‘900, fu utilizzata come granaio e poi come sala cinematografica, funzionerà come sala di conferenze.

Il Lido The Beach Sorge a circa 5 km da Tarquinia paese. Ospita prevalentemente case vacanze ed alberghi. Numerosi i ristoranti, le pizzerie, gli stabilimenti balneari attrezzati con cabine ed ombrelloni. Durante l’estate, presso il “Summer Village”, si tengono numerosi eventi, musicali e teatrali. La spiaggia, di colore scuro, ferrosa, ricorda per similitudine, quella dell’Elba e il fondale, tipico della piattaforma laziale, alterna zone sabbiose a grottoesteso e posidonia. La domenica mattina, in Viale dei Tritoni, ha luogo il mercato, anche alimentare. Numerosi gli sport praticabili: vela, windsurf, kite surf, diving, pallavolo e beach volley.

Located about 5 km from Tarquinia town center, it is mainly a holiday location with many houses, hotels, restaurants, pizzerias and beach clubs equipped with changing rooms and umbrellas. During the summer, at the "Summer Village", there are many cultural events of music and drama. The sandy beaches are dark with iron, similar to the island of Elba and the sea floor consists of sandy areas alternating with extended grottos and seagrass - typical of the Lazio region. On Sunday morning the open market of goods and food is on Viale dei Tritoni. The seaside also offers many sports: sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing, diving, volleyball and beach volleyball.

Porto Clementino (Clementino Port) Tornato in auge nel medioevo come approdo di uomini illustri e merci pregiate; più volte restaurato, anche da Clemente XII (1738, da cui il nome), ebbe anche un caricatore (1748). Collegato alla navigabilità del fiume Marta e alle limitrofe saline, l’approdo, venne abbandonato (sec. XX) superato da quello di Civitavecchia.

Nei pressi si ricordano le torri di Corneto (diruta) e degli appestati.

At the height of the Middle Ages, this port was utilized as a landing point for illustrious men and high-quality goods and merchandise and was restructured many times - even by Clemente the 12th in 1738 and hence the name, Porto Clementino. The port was utilized for loading shipping vessels and was ideally connected with the once navigable Marta River and the surrounding salt marshes. Notwithstanding its convenient location, Porto Clementino was made obsolete and replaced by the Port of Civitavecchia during the 20th century. This loss is reminiscent of the many ruined towers of Corneto and of the great destruction caused by the plagues.

Saline (Salt Works) Le saline di origini preistoriche, svolsero un ruolo importante durante i periodi etrusco e romano. Le incursioni barbariche del medioevo fecero decadere l’attività di produzione che fu ripresa poi, a partire dal sec. XV. L’interesse da parte dello Stato Pontificio per l'impianto crebbe nel tempo, raggiungendo il suo apice agli inizi del sec. XIX quando fu dato avvio al progetto di ampliamento con la consulenza di G. Lipari. I lavori iniziati nel 1803, dopo poco tempo furono sospesi per controversie giudiziarie e, solo nel 1831 furono ultimati. Negli anni successivi le saline raggiunsero un elevato livello di produzione, tanto che rappresentarono ben presto uno dei capisaldi delle finanze pontificie. Sino alla metà del sec. XIX, la manodopera esclusivamente costituita da galeotti del vicino carcere del Porto clementino, venne integrata - per ottimizzare la produzione - da addetti esterni. Per tale motivo fu necessario costruire degli edifici di pubblica utilità nella parte a nord degli impianti: un borgo operaio in cui le costruzioni, con funzioni e caratteri stilistici diversi - abitazioni, scuola, direzione, centro ricreativo, magazzino e cantine, botteghe e osteria, infermeria (1876-95); officina, chiesa e sacrestia, serbatoio per l’acqua, fabbricato dei sali scelti (1917- II metà del sec. XX) - si dispongono lungo i viali centrale e laterale, verso l’impianto manifatturiero. Dopo il secondo conflitto mondiale, con il sorgere di nuovi processi di lavorazione più redditizi, a Tarquinia l'estrazione del sale risultò non competitiva sul mercato. Tra l'altro, a seguito di una alluvione, alcune vasche risultarono inservibili; pertanto nel 1987 l'attività cessò definitivamente. A seguito di un ampio dibattito in sede scientifica e in ambito politico sul riuso dell'impianto, l'area già vincolata come riserva naturale di popolamento (D.M. 25/1/80) - cui si è aggiunto il vincolo al borgo operaio (1997; L.1089/39) - con finanziamenti europei (progetto “Life”), si è trasformata, in parte, in un centro di ricerca scientifica ambientale, dell'Università della Tuscia di Viterbo; l’oasi naturalistica è gestita dal Corpo forestale dello Stato.

The salt marshes date back to the prehistoric period and played an important role as salt works during the Etruscan and Roman civilizations. Subsequently, the salt works fell into decay and ruin due to the Barbaric invasions during the Medieval period and were not restored until the 15th century. The Papal State took an increasing interest in the salt works and their involvement reached its height in the 19th century when an enlargement of the facility was ordered under the direction of G. Lipari. The work began in 1803 but was halted

after only a short time due to judicial controversy and then was finally completed in 1831. In the following years, the salt works reached an elevated production level - so high in fact that it constituted one of the largest income sources for the Papacy. From the mid 19th century, the workers who had been exclusively inmates from the nearby prison of Porto Clementino were integrated with civil employees from the surrounding area in order to optimize production. For this reason, it was necessary to construct separate buildings to be used by the general public workers in the northern part of the facility. As such, a small borgo or community was set up to serve the needs and interests of the community workers incorporating housing, schools, administrative offices, recreation centers, storerooms, wine cellars, shops, wine houses, an infirmary (1876-95) mechanic workshops, churches and chapels, water tanks and refined salt factories (1917- mid 1900s). These establishments were placed along a main road with connecting side venues which traveled towards the Salt Works, The Saline.

After World War II, with the increased development of industrialization, the salt production in Tarquinia was no longer competitive in the market place. Furthermore, due to flooding, some of the large basins used in the procedure became unserviceable. Slowly the salt production diminished and the salt works completely ceased to function in 1987. During the latter part of this period, the Saline remained as a natural wildlife reserve (Legally declared as such on January 25th,1980) and following lengthy discussions in scientific and political circles on how to reutilize the remaining facilities, the workers borgo or community was finally granted funds from the European Community ( Project Life, 1997; L.1089/39) to partially transform the former residence into a center for scientific and environmental research under the tutelage of the University of the Tuscia of Viterbo. The natural oasis, however remains under the jurisdiction of the State Forest Rangers.

SANT’AGOSTINO Sant’Agostino Località dedicata esclusivamente alla balneazione., è situata a circa 9 km dal paese in direzione Civitavecchia. Conosciutissima da chi pratica pesca subacquea, ha un fondale ricco e variegato, prevalentemente scoglioso.

This natural beach front is dedicated solely to sunbathing and is a favored spot for scuba diving. It is surrounded by a rich and varied landscape-mostly rocky.

MARINA VELCA Marina Velca Marina Velca Pian di Spille è un magnifico centro residenziale immerso nel verde a circa 7 km da Tarquinia.

Ospita piscine, campi da tennis ed un campo da golf: inaugurato nel 1968 come percorso di soli “par 3” fu successivamente ristrutturato ed ampliato fino ad ottenere, sulle 9 buche, un “par 35” con doppie partenze.

Particolare menzione va alla “Buca 3”, una tra le più difficili e spettacolari del circuito. Marina Velca Voltumna è un centro residenziale che si affaccia sul mare (darsena) con stabilimenti balneari, campi da tennis e piscine.

Marina Velca ‘Pian di Spille’ is a magnificent residential area surrounded by greenery at about 7 km from Tarquinia center offering swimming pools, tennis courts and a golf course. Opened in 1968 with a "par 3" course, it was later renovated and expanded to 9-holes, becoming a 35 par course with double tees. The "3 par" course is one of the most difficult and spectacular courses in the area. Marina Velca Voltumna is a residential area overlooking the docks with sandy beaches, tennis courts and swimming pools.

01 Par 4 dog leg from right to left is of medium difficulty. The start from the top encourages the player who is about to begin the tour. The tee shot is not particularly difficult while the real challenge is the green shot that is elevated and protected by three large bunkers.

02 Par 3 generoso per la grandezza del green.

Non lungo ma la partenza dall’alto a volte rende difficile la scelta del ferro per via del vento che cambia facilmente direzione. Tre grossi bunker difendono il green, e uno più piccolo nel retro contiene i colpi troppo lunghi salvandoli dall’ostacolo d’acqua.

02 Par 3 has a generous size of the green. Is not long but the departure from the top sometimes makes it difficult to choose the golf club because the wind changes direction easily. Three large bunkers are defending the green, and a smaller one in the back cointains the missed shots by saving them from the water obstacle.

03 Par 5 molto delicato e tecnico, dog leg finale da destra a sinistra, per la presenza di un lungo fosso che costeggia tutta la parte destra della buca e che la attraversa fino al green. La particolarità sta nel grosso albero che infastidisce il terzo colpo a circa 100 metri dal green che si trova sulla sommità del fossato che taglia in due la buca.

03 Par 5 is very difficult and technical - the final dog leg from right to left - because of the presence of a long ditch that runs along the entire right side of the hole and through it to the green. The peculiarity lies in the large tree that annoys the third shot at about 100 meters from the green that sits on the top of the ditch, bisecting the hole.

04 Un par 3 non lungo ma impegnativo. La partenza dal basso rende difficile la scelta del ferro. il piccolo green a 2 livelli è difeso da un grande bunker posto nella sua parte frontale.

04 Par 3 is not long but challenging. The departure from the bottom makes the gulf club choice dfficult. The small two levels green is guarded by a big bunker placed at the front.

La Particolarità della buca è costituita da un lago che arriva fino sotto il green e che lo costeggia in tutta la parte frontale.

An over limit runs on the whole left side and reaches the green and a forest of pines on the right side penalizes the slice. The peculiarity of the hole is formed by a lake that comes up under the green and runs along the entire front.

06 Par 4 corto costituito dal fuori limite sia nella parte destra che nella parte sinistra. Il vento contrario e due grossi bunker a difesa del green rendono difficile la scelta di chi, dal tee, decide di raggiungerlo col drive.

06 Par 4 consists of the out of bounds to both right and left sides. The wind blows in the opposide direction and two large bunkers are placed to defend the green making difficult the choice of those who, from the tee, decide to reach it with the drive.

07 Questo lungo e impegnativo par 3 si caratterizza per il suo green, difficilmente raggiungibile per le sue ridotte dimensioni e per il vento che molto spesso è contrario. Un piccolo fosso che taglia la buca a metà fairway e un bunker sulla destra a difesa del green penalizza i colpi fuori misura.

08 Lungo par 5 dog leg da destra a sinistra. Il fuori limite a destra e a sinistra si sviluppano su tutta la lunghezza della buca fino al green. Due grossi bunker posti ai lati del fairway a circa 30 metri dal green restringono la pista scoraggiando chi vuole tentare di raggiungerlo in 2 colpi.

09 Buca finale e non poco impegnativa. Un corto par 4 dog leg da sinistra a destra. Il giocatore dal tee di partenza deve effettuare un colpo molto preciso per raggiungere un area a circa 130 metri dal green. Un varco tra gli alti eucalyptus permetterà al giocatore un non facile approccio al green. Nella seconda parte del fairway un fuori limite costeggia la buca fino al green, quest’ultimo difeso da 3 grossi bunker.

07 This long and challenging par 3 is characterized by its green, difficult to reach due to its small size and because of the wind that often blows in the opposite direction. A small ditch that cuts the hole in the middle fairway and a bunker on the right of the green penalizes the shots.

08 Long par 5 dog leg from rght to left. The out of bounds both on the right and left side are developed on the entire lenght from the hole until the green. Two large bunkers on either side of the fairway about 30 meters from the green narrow the track discouraging those who want to reach the hole in 2 shots.

09 The final hole is quite challenging. A short par 4 leg from left to right. The player from the starting tee has to carry a very precise shot to reach an area of about 130 meters from the green. A path through the tall eucalyptus trees will not allow the player the reach the green easily. In the second part of the fairway an out of the bound runs from the hole to the green; the latter defended by three large bunkers.

Tra il XIV e XV secolo è attestata la presenta di due importanti Arti: quella degli Ortolani, documentabile sin dal 1379, anno della redazione dello Statuto, e quella dei Lavoratori del frumento e proprio nell'Arte dei lavoratori del frumento vanno rintracciate le origini di quella che oggi è l'Università Agraria. (vedi pag. 53 Palazzo Vipereschi). L’Università Agraria, viene identificata con “la Roccaccia”, così denominata per la presenza del castello medievale di Rocca Giorgii o Jorii.

La Roccaccia è il Centro Aziendale operativo dell’Ente ed è il luogo dove le antiche tradizioni rivivono: ettari di bosco ceduo, cavalli e vacche maremmane allo stato brado, monta riproduttiva equina e vaccina. (vedi pag 09. Festa della Merca).

The 'Agricultural University’ was founded in the late medieval period, and was conceived by the Arts Guild. During the 14th and 15th century it gave presidence to two major guilds - that of the farmers, documented in 1379, the year the Statute was drawn up and the wheat farmers guild. The Agricultural University was founded upon the principles of the farm workers‘ rights. (See page Vipereschi Palace 53). The 'Agricultural University’ became associated with the "Roccaccia", so named for the presence of the medieval castle of Rocca Giorgio or Jorii.

LA NATURA THE NATURE LA FARNESIANA Si tratta di un’area collinare attraversata dal fiume Mignone, posta tra Tarquinia e i Monti della Tolfa, ricca di fauna e vegetazione. Nel sec. XVI passò in proprietà alla famiglia Farnese, che nel 1754 vi impiantò una fiorente azienda agricola. Oggi gran parte dell’area, proprietà dell’Università Agraria di Tarquinia, è usata in prevalenza per l’allevamento di bovini allo stato brado.

Situated to the right of the family chapel lies the antechamber or waiting hall of G. Vitelleschi. It is set on a rectangular foundation with a barrel-vaulted ceiling, decorated with frescos dating from the 15th century which are attributed to J. Salimbeni from San Severino, Marche or from the circle of Balletta by F. D’Antonio Zacchi).

The long walls are painted with the Story of Lucrezia and the cardinal virtues while the short walls depict Jesus speaking amongst the learned men and doctors on the left, and the Vitelleschi family coat of arms on the right.

The chambers were long closed and have only recently been restored, opening to the public in 2011.

This city was founded by Pope Leone IV (August 15th, 854 as dated in the Papal records) in the territory of Tarquinia near the Marta River, in order to save the inhabitants of Centumcellae (modern day Civitavecchia) from the invasion of the Saracens. Leopoli-Cencelle was the seat of the Diocese for five centuries. Yearly excavations have unearthed the urban structure as well as buildings, churches, tombs and assorted artifacts.

LA NATURA THE NATURE Il fiume Marta, l'ecosistema e il percorso naturalistico Il fiume, che ha origine dal lago di Bolsena, nel suo percorso di 53,4 km fino al mare, attraversa o lambisce centri o territori della Tuscia (Marta, Tuscania, Monte Romano, Tarquinia) e siti di notevole richiamo storico e di attrazione ambientale, il cui sviluppo è stato determinato anche dall’interazione con lo stesso corso d’acqua. Noto dall’antichità anche perché navigabile, dopo alcune cascatelle presso Tuscania (Salumbrona, ecc.), riceve le acque di altri corsi (Biedano ecc.); ha subito nel tempo delle modificazioni, non sempre felici, dovute anche all’intervento dell’uomo. L’onomastica ricorrente nel territorio e alcuni resti di edifici medievali di culto (S. Savino, S. Giusto, ecc.) e civili (castelli di Ancarano, Pian Fagiano ecc.; la Cannara) disposti lungo il percorso fluviale testimoniano l’interesse di alcune comunità ecclesiastiche e di alcune potenti famiglie per questo fiume. Ricordiamo, tra gli edifici di epoca più recente, situati sul corso d’acqua, in parte dimessi o in dismissione, le cartiere (Tuscania, Tarquinia) e le centrali elettriche (S. Savino), oggi monumenti di archeologia industriale in attesa di un riuso ecocompatibile. Il Marta è spesso evocato in campo umanistico (V. Campanari, La caduta della Marta) e artistico (F.-M. Granet). In bicicletta o a cavallo, il percorso naturalistico che attraversa un paesaggio agricolo, è servito da cartelli indicatori, aree di sosta e bacheche informative circa la fauna e la flora che caratterizzano l’ambiente.

(The Marta River, the Ecosystem and Nature Trails) The Marta River originates from the Lake of Bolsena and runs 53.4 km to the sea, cutting through city centers and surrounding countrysides within the Tuscia (Marta, Tuscania, Monte Romano, Tarquinia) and lapping its way past notorious historical sites as well as natural attractions which occured and rose into being as a result of its gentle presence. The Marta River has been sited throughout history due to its navigability- after the falls of Tuscania (Salumbrona, ect.) and further strengthened by other tributaries which feed into it. (Biedano, ect.) Unfortunately, it has been altered in time and not always in its best interest, but has been often subject to man’s erroneous interventions.

There are recurring tributes to the Marta River throughout the territory found amongst the remains of various medieval churches (S. Savino, S. Giusto, ect) as well as in civil architecture (Castles of Ancarano, Pian Fagiano, la Cannara, ect.). These have been discovered along the course of the river and testify to the importance it had for some ecclesiastical communities as well as for several important families. Even during modern times, there are a number of large industrial structures situated along the banks of the Marta which are partially or completely abandoned. These include the ex-paper mills in both Tarquinia and Tuscania as well as the electrical power plant in S. Savino.

Today these represent archaeological industrial ruins awaiting a renovation that is environmentally friendly. The Marta River has often been nominated in humanitarian and artistic fields such as in “La Caduta della Marta” (The decline of the Marta) by V. Campanari and the works by F. M. Granet. Naturalists may want to wander the many trails which weave in and around the Marta River, travelling on mountain bike or on horse-back. The paths are indicated on maps as are rest areas and information plaques which reveal the nature of the flora and fauna typical to this area.

Mignone, mole Del mulino posto nella tenuta di Cencelle - attivo dalla seconda metà del sec. XVI per volontà del Card. G. A. Sforza (1518-64), al servizio degli abitanti di Civitavecchia, Tolfa, Allumiere e Monteromano - si hanno interessanti notizie d’archivio. Al centro di diverse contese tra i proprietari degli opifici del Marta e del Mignone, in concorrenza per il primato della molitura del grano, le mole cessarono la loro attività agli inizi del sec. XX, dopo che (1922-23) il Comune si era attivato per recuperarle dal degrado. Presso il ponte sul fiume è visibile ancora l'impianto in abbandono, all'interno del quale, oltre ai segni lasciati dalle piene del fiume, i macchinari delle turbine, le macine, gli ambienti per gli addetti alla molitura e alla piccola contabilità del macinato, sopravvivono agli eventi. Passate di mano a diversi proprietari, nel 1783 divennero proprietà di N. Soderini. L’ultimo proprietario fu S. di Pietri, di antica famiglia di mugnai attivi sul Mignone.

(Mignone, The Millstones) These millstones hail from the grain mill that once stood in Cencelle and was active during the second half of the 16th century thanks to the support of Cardinal G.A. Sforza (1518-64). It provided grain for the inhabitants of Civitavecchia, Tolfa, Allumiere and Monteromano and has had an interesting history as noted in the archives.

The millstones have become a point of controversy between the owners of mills in Marta and Mignone as to their origin, as well as possibly being a prime example of its kind. The millstones ceased to be in use at the beginning of the 20th century (1922-23), after which the city government sought to conserve them from decay.

Looking from the bridge, it is still possible to see the ruins of the old grain mill. Inside the mill there are signs of the water level once reached by the Marta River as well as remains of the water-powered turbines, millstones, the surrounding spaces where the workers performed their tasks and even an “office” area for simple accounting. Ownership of the mill changed hands various times throughout its history and in 1783 it became the property of N. Soderini. The final owner was S. di Pietri, hailing from an ancient family of millers who had long been in business along the Mignone River.

Tarquinia offre scelte di acquisto di ogni tipo: abbigliamento di marca, alimentari e centri commerciali.

Resistono ancora, in stradine poco battute del centro storico, antiche tipologie di rivendita come gli “spacci” e cioè negozi dove si poteva e si può trovare poco di tutto, dagli alimentari ai detersivi. Da decenni, suddiviso in due grandi spazi, Piazza Matteotti e Piazzale Europa, il mercoledì è dedicato al mercato: banchi di prodotti eterogenei ed abbigliamento “usato”.

Tarquinia offers a wide variety of products – from designer clothes to high quality foods and large discount stores as well as shopping centers. Along the narrow winding streets of the historical center, visitors can still find tiny family-owned shops known as “spacci” where you can purchase a bit of everything - from fruits, vegetables, bread and meat to soaps, cleaning supplies and other household items – an ancient version of “one-stop” shopping. Every Wednesday in Tarquinia is “Market Day” where a large open air market occupies the enchanting squares of “Piazza Matteotti” and “Piazzale Europa” with stands of everything imaginable, including second-hand and vintage clothing.

Their work reflects the enormous historical and cultural patrimony which has been inherited from these Etruscan lands. Their depth of knowledge can be easily noted in a brilliant pictorial landscape which captures the subtle essence of the Maremma countryside. Ceramicists and sculptors mold and transform materials into thousands of varying expressions while master metallurgists and goldsmiths forge and recreate the elaborate designs chiseled upon or painted within Etruscan tombs. Along the quaint narrow streets of the historical center visitors are verily welcomed into the artists’ bottegas, studios and galleries where they can delight in finding unique treasures of ancient art and design to take back home. Prodotti Tipici Fresh Foods - Locally Grown and Produced A molte aziende agrituristiche e allo spirito d’ iniziativa di imprenditori agricoli, dobbiamo invece la vasta produzione di prodotti tipici: olio, vino, miele, lumache, uova di quaglia, formaggi, conserve e “sott’olio” e la coltivazione del popolare ferlengo (Pleurotus Eryngii che ha ottenuto la certificazione di Qualità come Prodotto Tradizionale della Regione Lazio), ma anche ortaggi (conosciutissimi e saporitissimi i pomodori, i meloni, i cocomeri, i carciofi). Una particolare menzione va alla pasta “Senatore Cappelli”, una pregiata varietà di grano duro che Tarquinia produce da tempo immemore.

Thanks to the many local farms and the spirit of initiative amongst local agricultural producers, Tarquinia offers a vast array of home-grown prepared foods. These include fresh olive oil, honey, snails, quail eggs, cheese, bottled vegetables conserved in olive oil, as well as the cultivation of “Ferlengo” mushrooms, known as “Pleurotus Eryngii” and marked with the “Certification of Quality” as a product which is naturally cultivated in the Lazio Region. Furthermore, Tarquinia is also well known for its flavorful fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, melons, watermelons and artichokes. Another “feather in our cap” is the nationally renowned pasta, “Senatore Cappelli”, a prized variety of a natural grain which has been harvested in Tarquinia since time immemorial.

TRASPORTI PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Collegamenti Connections Da Roma: autostrada fino a Civitavecchia e quindi statale Aurelia (in totale 90 km).

Da Grosseto: Aurelia in direzione sud (90 km).

Da Viterbo doppia possibilità: via Vetralla - Monte Romano e via Tuscania; in entrambi i casi non più di 45 km.

Il Lido di Tarquinia dista 5 km dalla città.

La necropoli è alle porte della città, la Civita (l' antica acropoli) a circa 7 km, lungo la strada per Monte Romano.

Tarquinia si trova sul tratto ferroviario Roma-Ventimiglia: stazione a 3 km con collegamento di Bus urbani.

From Rome: Civitavecchia Highway and then the SS Aurelia (90 kilometers).

From Grosseto: SS Aurelia to the south (90 kilometers).

From Viterbo two possibilities: Vetralla - Monte Romano or Tuscania; here are no more than 45 kilometers.

Tarquinia Lido is at only 5 kilometers from the city.

The necropolis is on the outside of the city, Civita (the acropolis) is at approximately 7 kilometers along the road to Monte Romano.

Tarquinia is on the railway Rome-Ventimiglia: The train station is at 3 kilometers from the old town with bus services.

Tickets must be purchased and stamped with the departing date in the yellow machines located just inside the stations before boarding. Tickets can be purchased in the cafè located in the train station or from the “Tabaccherie” and travel agencies located in various points throughout Tarquinia.

Parcheggi Parking Tarquina è una ZSC, Zona a Sosta Controllata dalle ore 8.00 alle ore 20.00. Tutti i parcheggi, delimitati dalle strisce blu, sono a pagamento. E’ disponibile un abbonamento mensile valido per tutti i parcheggi fuori le mura e per il Lido, acquistabile presso i parcometri.

Tarquinia is a ZSC Zone with controlled public parking lots in operation from 8.00am until 8.00pm.

Parking spaces which are demarked in blue are paid parking spaces and tickets may be purchased from the meter machines located nearby. Monthly parking tickets valid for the parking lots outside the city walls and for the parking zones located at the seaside.

Tickets may be purchased at the “parkmeter” located throughout the town.

A shuttle bus runs through the main parts of town and is free of charge: old town, Necropolis, hospital and post office (see the following page). There is also a town bus that runs to the train station, the commercial center and to the seaside for a small fee. The ticket can be purchased from the driver.
