¡Que venga pletórico de igualdad y con más mujeres liderando!

Cada nuevo año, según la tradición, debemos identificar los nuevos deseos. Muchos deseos son individuales, otros colectivos, para impactar el entorno en el que cada una de nosotras vive, el país o la región.

En lo personal, en el 2025 quiero hacer del ejercicio una rutina diaria, crecer espiritualmente y disfrutar más de mi familia, amigas y amigos. A nivel colectivo, lo visualizo como un año estratégico para promover la igualdad, para que nadie se quede atrás en el disfrute de oportunidades y derechos.

Es claro que para este sueño necesitamos más mujeres liderando, y que en el ejercicio de ese liderazgo puedan ocupar los puestos de toma de decisiones.

Sobre todo, porque solo un porcentaje muy pequeño de mujeres ocupa los espacios de poder y de decisión, solo 6 mujeres son presidentas

en la región y solo el 15% de las mujeres ocupan puestos en la gobernanza local.

Claramente eso no es justo porque somos exactamente la mitad de la población, y en esa misma proporción debemos estar representadas en los puestos.

Que el año 2025 nos posibilite visibilizar, acompañar y seguir a las mujeres que en todas las Américas están alzando sus voces y ejerciendo liderazgo escrito en clave de mujer.

La corresponsabilidad en los cuidados, por ejemplo, es uno de los elementos centrales en esa agenda por la igualdad. Durante décadas, las mujeres han llevado la carga de cuidar de sus familias y comunidades, en muchas ocasiones sacrificando sus propias oportunidades para hacerlo.

Ahora, sin embargo, estamos impulsando repartir esta responsabilidad de manera equitativa, con los hombres y con iniciativas en el sector público, privado, y el estado.

“Que sea un año de cumplimiento de sueños y mejoramiento, de alianzas entre las mujeres.

Trabajemos juntas para que nuestra América sea un lugar donde las niñas puedan crecer sin límites, y donde las mujeres y hombres puedan compartir -en igualdad de condiciones- el poder, el cuidado y la responsabilidad de construir mejores sociedades.”

2025: May it arrive full of equality and with more Women leading!

E

ach new year, as tradition goes, we set new intentions.

Many of these are personal, while others are collective, meant to impact the environment each of us lives in—our country, our region. Personally, in 2025, I want to make exercise a daily habit, grow spiritually, and enjoy more time with my family and friends. Collectively, I see it as a strategic year to promote equality, so that no one is left behind in accessing opportunities and rights.

It’s clear that for this dream, we need more women in leadership, and we need them in decision-making positions.Currently, only a very small percentage of women occupy spaces of power and decisionmaking—only six women are presidents in the region, and only 15% of women hold local

governance roles. This is far from fair, as we are exactly half of the population, and we should be represented in leadership roles in that same proportion.

Let 2025 be a year to uplift, support, and follow the women across the Americas who are raising their voices and exercising a leadership uniquely defined by women.

Shared responsibility in caregiving, for example, is one of the central elements in this agenda for equality. For decades, women have borne the burden of caring for their families and communities, often sacrificing their own opportunities to do so. Now, however, we are driving efforts to distribute this responsibility equitably, involving men and implementing initiatives across the public and private sectors, as well as the state.

of alliances among women. Let’s work together to make the Americas a place where girls can grow without limits, and where women and men can equally share the power, care, and responsibility of building better societies.”

iriam Valdez tenía solo cinco años cuando su madre, Lucía Rivera, tomó la decisión más valiente de su vida. Era una madrugada de noviembre de 1986 en la Villa de Cuerámbaro, en Guadalajara, Jalisco, cuando “Chía”-como la llaman sus seres amados-, (madre de seis hijos, dos de ellos viviendo en California), tomó a los cuatro menores, y en el silencio de la noche, los condujo hacia las montañas para escapar de su agresor. La familia no sabía qué les esperaba, pero en ese momento el miedo a lo desconocido era menos aterrador que permanecer bajo el yugo de su opresor esposo, quien amenazaba su vida.

“Tu realidad no es tu destino”

Para Miriam, la menor de los seis hermanos, ese viaje hacia lo incierto fue su primer gran paso a un mundo duro y desafiante. Durante años, vivieron de casa en casa, mudándose con frecuencia para mantenerse a salvo, pero cada nueva etapa traía consigo más dificultades. La pobreza era extrema, la comida escasa, y los lugares donde se refugiaban apenas podían considerarse hogar.

La familia se adaptaba a cada espacio donde podían

encontrar refugio: desde una casa abandonada y sin terminar, hasta un cuarto de lámina, con piso de tierra, baño comunitario donde su seguridad era confiada a su pequeño perro, que dormía atado a la puerta para alertarlos de cualquier peligro.

Un espíritu Soñador Ella era una niña curiosa, creativa, soñadora, con una imaginación fértil que florecía en medio de esa realidad tan desoladora. Chía, su madre, trabajaba incansablemente para mantener a su familia a salvo. Se empleaba como trabajadora doméstica, dejando a sus hijos solos durante largas jornadas, por esa razón Miriam era cuidada por sus hermanos mayores, pero ella se les escapaba a uno de sus lugares favoritos, el basurero municipal, un lugar donde otros veían basura, pero que para ella era un territorio lleno de “tesoros” por explorar.

Con entusiasmo Miriam navegaba entre montones de desperdicios, encontraba dulces y muchas cosas para ser creativa y hacer sus propios juguetes.

Un día entre los tesoros que la esperaban en ese inusitado lugar, encontró lo que parecía una libreta con cobertura de piel suave (era una chequera, cheques usados y uno vacío) y ahí, en ese entorno desalentador cerraba sus ojos y pensaba con alegría y emoción en firmar cheques y repartir dinero por doquier… Por años jugó con esa chequera y se miraba a sí misma extendiendo cheques al mundo entero, cambiando la vida de muchas personas, -como si ese simple objeto pudiera contener la promesa de un futuro diferente-.

“Sin saber lo que era manifestar, en ese momento yo estaba manifestando mi vida, esa niña ya sabía lo que sería de grande” comentó Miriam.

Miriam se ha autoproclamado como una manifestadora profesional. Para todos: Quiero ser una Chía, una Nancy, un Larry!

Un ángel, un ser de luz, de esperanza y de motivación para quien lo necesite.

Chía regresaba cada noche agotada, pero no se rendía. Para sus hijos, era una heroína silenciosa, una mujer fuerte que había dejado todo atrás en busca de un futuro mejor.

Un cambio de Vida Después de cinco años de rodar sin descanso, la familia tuvo la oportunidad de emigrar a Estados Unidos, gracias al apoyo de su hermano mayor. La travesía fue dura, y Miriam, sin saberlo, cruzó la frontera de manera ilegal. Al llegar a Virginia el 24 de diciembre de 1991, el sueño de su madre comenzaba a tomar forma, pues, aunque aún enfrentaban desafíos, la familia había dejado atrás el hambre y la constante amenaza de huir.

Con los años, Miriam se convirtió en una mujer determinada, inspirada por la valentía de su madre. Su vida se encaminó hacia el éxito, y a sus 22 años, junto a su hermana y una amiga, fundó una empresa que logró un éxito inimaginable.

Sin embargo, el reconocimiento de ese logro no le fue acreditado debido a su estatus migratorio, algo que la marcó y por orgullo o por naturaleza, ella manifestó fundar algún día, su propia empresa.

Su familia, su prioridad más grande

E

ste sentimiento la impulsó a tomar varias decisiones que cambiarían el rumbo de su historia, Una de ellas fue trabajar como voluntaria para “Mexicanos Sin Fronteras”, una organización sin fines de lucro que luchaba para evitar la implementación de una resolución antinmigrante que afectaría a miles de sus residentes.

Por años, Miriam brindó su tiempo, recursos y conocimiento a ese movimiento, fue ahí donde conoció a dos personas a las que ella se refiere como dos ángeles en su vida: Nancy Lyall y Larry Bell, por quienes 21 años después de su llegada a este país, obtuvo la ciudadanía americana que la ha llevado a cumplir todos sus sueños.

Desde el 2005 es voluntaria del Comité de Trabajadores de Woodbridge, una extensión de Mexicanos Sin Fronteras que ayuda con alimentación, vestimenta, rentas, inmigración etc, a inmigrantes y personas en situación de vulnerabilidad en el condado de Prince William A tres meses de ajustar su estatus migratorio Miriam fundó su empresa como única propietaria llamada United Title & Escrow LLC (UT&E). Una empresa de cierres de bienes raíces licenciada en el estado de Virginia & Maryland. Donde, ahora desde un espacio más privilegiado, usa su empresa como plataforma para motivar e inspirar talento profesional.

Día tras día, firma cheques como aquellos que soñaba en su infancia, pero ahora lo hace desde su realidad, tocando y mejorando vidas, convirtiendo hoy a UT&E en una de las firmas más exitosas en el ámbito de bienes raíces.

Miriam es madre de dos hijos adultos, Mirin y Nonon, como ella les llama de cariño. Su orgullo de madre se ve reflejado cuando habla de ellos: “Mis hijos me enseñaron el amor verdadero e incondicional, ser su madre ha sido mi mayor bendición y privilegio. Ellos no solo me enseñaron a ser mamá, también me enseñaron a ser una mejor hija, mis hijos conocen toda mi historia y la de su abuela. Mi meta es dejarles un legado que honre el esfuerzo de Chía, y que sientan el mismo orgullo por mí, así como el que yo siento por mi madre.’ Nos confía Miriam.

Miriam se ha autoproclamado como una manifestadora profesional.

Para todos: “Quiero ser una Chía, una Nancy, un Larry! Un ángel, un ser de luz, de esperanza y de motivación para quien lo necesite”. Para mí y mi familia: “Seré una Glam-Ma consentidora con mis nietos. Me veo retirada en un lugar donde me despierte con el sonido de las olas del mar. Donde comenzaré a desarrollar ese lado creativo, ese que de niña me llevo a fantasear sin restricciones”.

En lo profesional: “Creceré mi negocio de una forma orgánica, donde mi equipo crezca profesionalmente hasta que ya no me necesiten, para estar al frente de la empresa.

Para Miriam, esos recuerdos en el basurero son la prueba de que hasta los sueños más improbables pueden convertirse en realidad. Esa pequeña niña hoy se ha transformado en una mujer que inspira y sigue avanzando para honrar la fuerza y el sacrificio de su madre, esa mujer valiente que lo dejó todo para darle a ella, y a sus hermanos, la posibilidad de soñar y lograr.

iriam Valdez was only five years old when her mother, Lucía Rivera, made the bravest decision of her life. It was a November morning in 1986 in the village of Cuerámbaro, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, when “Chía”—as her loved ones call her—mother of six, with two already living in California, took her four younger children and led them into the mountains under the cover of darkness to escape her abuser. The family had no idea what awaited them, but at that moment, the fear of the unknown was less terrifying than staying under the control of her oppressive husband, who had threatened her life.

For Miriam, the youngest of the six siblings, that journey into the unknown was her first major step into a harsh and challenging world. For years, they lived from house to house, moving frequently to stay safe, but each new stage brought more difficulties. Poverty was extreme, food was scarce, and the places they took refuge in could hardly be called homes. They adapted to every shelter they could find from an unfinished, abandoned house to a room made of tin with a dirt floor and communal bathrooms. Their safety often relied on their small dog, who slept tied to the door to alert

”Your Reality is Not Your Destiny”

A dreamer’s spirit Miriam was a curious, creative, and dreamy child, with a vivid imagination that flourished despite the bleakness of her reality. Chía worked tirelessly to keep her family safe, taking jobs as a domestic worker and leaving her children alone for long hours. Miriam was cared for by her older siblings but often sneaked away to one of her favorite places, the municipal dump, a place where others saw trash but where she saw a land full of “treasures” to explore. With enthusiasm, Miriam sifted through piles of waste, finding candy and other items to spark her creativity and make her own toys. One day, among the treasures waiting for her in that unusual place, she found what seemed

like a notebook with a soft leather cover (a checkbook with used checks and one blank one). In that bleak environment, she would close her eyes and imagine herself signing checks and handing out money everywhere. For years, she played with that checkbook and envisioned herself changing lives as if that simple object held the promise of a different future. “Without knowing what manifestation was, at that moment I was already manifesting my life; that little girl already knew what she would become,” Miriam shared.

Chía returned every night exhausted but never gave up. To her children, she was a silent heroine, a strong woman who had left everything behind in search of a better future.

A life-changing shift After five years of continuous struggle, the family had the opportunity to migrate to the United States, thanks to the support of the oldest brother. The journey was arduous, and Miriam unknowingly crossed the border illegally. Arriving in Virginia on December 24, 1991, her mother’s dream began to take shape. Though they still faced challenges, the family had left behind hunger and the constant threat of fleeing.

Over the years, Miriam grew into a determined woman, inspired by her mother’s courage. Her life veered toward success, and at 22, along with her sister and a friend, she founded a company that achieved unimaginable success. However, she was not credited for this achievement due to her immigration status, a fact that marked her and fueled her resolve to one day create her own company.

This sentiment pushed her to make several decisions that would change the course of her life.

One of them was volunteering for “Mexicanos sin fronteras,” a nonprofit organization that fought to prevent the implementation of an anti-immigrant resolution that would affect thousands of residents. For years, Miriam devoted her time, resources, and knowledge to this movement, where she met two people she calls the angels of her life: Nancy Lyall and Larry Bell, thanks to whom, 21 years after arriving in the U.S., she obtained her American citizenship, enabling her to achieve all her dreams.

Since 2005, she has been a volunteer with the Woodbridge Workers Committee, an extension of Mexicanos sin fronteras that helps provide food, clothing, rent assistance, and immigration support to immigrants and vulnerable individuals in Prince William County.

Just three months after adjusting her immigration status, Miriam founded her company, United Title & Escrow LLC (UT&E), as the sole owner. This real estate closing company, licensed in Virginia and Maryland, now serves as a platform for motivating and inspiring professional talent. Raíces Fuertes y Sueños Grandes Desde muy pequeña, Diana Méndez aprendió lo que significa tener coraje y soñar con un futuro lleno de posibilidades. Nació en El Salvador, y a sus seis años, experimentó lo que miles de niños en su país viven: ver a sus padres partir hacia los Estados Unidos en busca de un futuro mejor.

Sus padres forjaron en ella un espíritu resiliente y una gran capacidad de adaptación. A los once años, finalmente llegó el ansiado día en que Diana y su madre pudieron reunirse con su padre en Estados Unidos, un país lleno de retos, pero también de oportunidades para aquellos con el coraje y la

Diana Méndez Strong Roots, Big Dreams From a young age, Diana Méndez learned what it means to have courage and to dream of a future filled with possibility. Born in El Salvador, Diana was only six years old when she experienced what countless children in her country do: watching her parents leave for the United States in search of a better future. Those years apart shaped her resilience and ability to adapt. Lourdes Rubio UNA VIDA DEDICADA A SERVIR

Lourdes Rubio es un faro de resiliencia, empatía y liderazgo en la comunidad latina. Nacida y criada en México, su vocación la llevó a graduarse como licenciada en el área de audición y lenguaje. Con una profunda pasión por el servicio y la educación, se propuso seguir perfeccionándose, y así emprendió el viaje de su vida: una maestría en Salud Mental en Estados Unidos, gracias a una beca que le abría las puertas para ampliar su impacto en su natal México. Sin embargo, el destino le tenía preparada una prueba de fuego.

La prueba del terremoto y la fuerza de su espíritu

En 1985, México fue sacudido por un devastador terremoto, y las ayudas internacionales, incluidas becas, se suspendieron. Lourdes se encontró enfrentando una realidad impensable: la incertidumbre de cómo costear su educación, vivienda y alimentación.

“Aprendí que tenía que tomar decisiones y decidí terminar mi maestría a toda costa. Al negociar intercambios realicé muchos tipos de trabajo desde lavar ollas en una cafetería, hasta dar clases a nivel universitario”.

Debido a la negligencia de una Abogada de Inmigración, Lourdes tuvo que pasar casi 5 años sin tener un estatus legal migratorio, cuando al fin pudo solucionar su residencia ella, también decidió unirse en matrimonio.

Servicio inquebrantable a la Comunidad Latina

Superadas las dificultades, Lourdes se estableció en Estados Unidos y dedicó 26 años de su vida al servicio de la comunidad latina en las escuelas públicas, donde se convirtió en una consejera de referencia. La certificación como traductora profesional le permitió ser un puente vital entre las familias inmigrantes y el sistema educativo.

La conexión que construyó fue mucho más que profesional; era un lazo humano que comprendía las luchas y sueños de sus estudiantes, en su mayoría hijos de inmigrantes que habían enfrentado penurias en su trayecto a un nuevo país.

Una nueva perspectiva tras la tempestad

Esa epifanía la llevó a fundar Rubio Homes DMV, un proyecto que no se limitaba a la asesoría inmobiliaria, sino que se convirtió en un símbolo de esperanza y avance para la comunidad latina.

Lourdes entendió que la estabilidad financiera es mucho más que tener un techo; es tener la certeza de pertenecer a un lugar, construir un hogar, y forjar una base sobre la cual las familias puedan prosperar. “Cada familia que asesoro lleva consigo no solo un contrato, sino un sueño en construcción”, reflexiona Lourdes.

ourdes Rubio is a beacon of resilience, empathy, and leadership within the Latino community. Born and raised in Mexico, her calling led her to earn a degree in the field of hearing and speech. With a profound passion for service and education, she sought to continue her growth, embarking on a life-changing journey: a master’s degree in Mental Health in the United States, made possible by a scholarship that opened doors to expand her impact back in Mexico. However, destiny had a test of resilience in store for her.

“I learned I had to make decisions, and I decided to finish my master’s degree no matter what. By negotiating exchanges, I worked many jobs, from washing pots in a cafeteria to teaching at the university level,” she recalls. At that time, Lourdes did not know American Sign Language (ASL), so she had to learn it in order to teach classes. She turned that adversity into the foundation of her strength.

Unwavering service to the Latino Community

The connection she built went beyond a professional bond; it was a human link that understood the struggles and dreams of her students, most of whom were children of immigrants who had faced hardship on their journey to a new country.

A new perspective after the storm In 2018, Lourdes suffered a heart attack. It was a difficult episode, but also a moment of deep revelation—a wake-up call that forced her to confront life’s fleeting nature and question the purpose of her efforts. In that vulnerable space, she realized that her time in this world couldn’t be just a series of routine workdays; it needed to be a conscious legacy that would endure in the lives she touched. esde Guatemala hasta los Estados Unidos, Eva Scott ha recorrido un camino de desafíos y triunfos, llevando consigo una determinación implacable y un amor profundo por la belleza y la estética.

A sus 36 años, Eva llegó a este país con la meta de construir una vida mejor para ella y sus tres hijos. Sin embargo, la travesía no fue fácil: comenzó trabajando los siete días de la semana, equilibrando dos empleos para reunirse con sus hijos en su primer año y asegurarles un hogar estable.

“Mi padre no creía que un oficio fuera una opción de estudio para mí, así que estudié primero una carrera profesional, pero el oficio fue lo que se convirtió en mi pasión, y el que me daría la oportunidad de crecer en este país cuando me tocó emigrar”, comparte Eva. Al llegar a Estados Unidos, Eva tenía claro su objetivo: homologar sus estudios en belleza y cosmética para poder certificarse y ejercer en su nueva tierra. A pesar de lo arduo de este proceso, Eva logró licenciarse, un logro que atribuye a su fe y a un “milagro de Dios”.

Gracias a esta meta cumplida, Eva comenzó -a los tres años de haber llegado- lo que sería un camino para tener su propio negocio, una historia llena de dificultades, deslealtades, tropiezos, decepciones y nuevos comienzos, pero que ninguno de ellos le robo los deseos de superación y sobre todo la fe en las personas y en el Dios al que ella le creía.

Entre los obstáculos y las lecciones que encontró en el camino, Eva fue descubriendo nuevas oportunidades y alianzas. Eventualmente, encontró el lugar ideal para su salón, y cuando leyó el nombre “Oasis” en el rótulo del local, supo que estaba frente al lugar donde vería materializado su sueño. Ese salón, fue el espacio donde Eva no solo cumplió su anhelo, sino que brindó oportunidades a otros profesionales para que también crecieran.

Hoy, con más de 40 años de experiencia en el arte de la belleza, Eva continúa liderando el Oasis Salón, un espacio que destaca por su ambiente acogedor y el talento de su equipo de profesionales.

“My father didn’t believe a trade was a real career path for me, so I studied a professional career first,” Eva shares. “But it was the trade that became my passion, and the one that would give me the opportunity to grow in this country when it was my time to emigrate.”

Upon arriving in the United States, Eva was clear about her goal: to validate her beauty and cosmetology studies so she could become certified and licensed in her new country.
