Grapes, apples and ale – a venue that wants to know everyone’s name By Simon McKenzie A warm country welcome

n a bitterly cold, rainy afternoon in the picturesque country town of Yea, one only needs to step into the Yea Winery, Brewery and Cidery to escape the weather. It’s the ideal place for customers to sink into comfortable couches beside the wood fire heater to enjoy tastings of locally produced wines, beers and ciders. It’s warm, welcoming and unmistakably country. Manager Steve Bennett greets customers with a smile and his impressive knowledge of the extensive selection of wine, cider and beer on offer. He grew up around Yea so he understands customer hospitality. “I got asked if I could help out one weekend when they had an event on, and I’ve pretty much been here ever since.” The bar also has its own cider maker where ciders and sparkling wines are made. Steve says the cider is “outselling the wine at the

moment”. He’s proud to hear customers say they’ve not tasted anything quite like it before. Local wines, craft beer and award-worthy cider The Yea Winery, Cidery and Brewery sell a wide variety of white wines including chardonnay, dry rose, sauvignon blanc, prosecco and malbec tempranillo. Red wines range from shiraz grenache, shiraz tempranillo to cabernet merlot. One of the most popular is the Heathcote shiraz. The venue’s signature ciders are equally diverse. Visitors can sample two apple ciders, one using Granny Smith, the other Pink Lady. There is also pear, passion fruit, peach strawberry and even a chai pear cider infused with cinnamon star anise. “It’s got that Christmasy sort of flavour”, Steve says. The chilli used in their popular chilli wine comes from Disaster Bay Chillies on the South Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2026 – 13

They also sell a variety of condiments, including the Lemon Stinger, chilli jelly and the Yellow Mongrel sauce. Beer lovers are well catered for as well. On Point Brewery from nearby Alexandra supplies brown ale, red IPA, pale ale, pilsner and Dindi Draught, along with locally made ginger beer. More Than Just A Cellar Door The bar stands out as a unique venue in the Murrindindi Shire because of its relaxed vibe where customers are welcome to come in, sit down and enjoy a drink with their partner or friends. “It’s only $5 for a glass of wine or cider, so it’s very affordable,” Steve says. Customers can also purchase six-packs for $25 or a case of 24 for $85. “Some customers really like the apple, others the passionfruit so when they ask for half and half, that’s fine”, Steve says. Tastings are encouraged because it allows customers to try before they buy. “We’ll pretty much do anything for our customers”, he says. 14 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2026

Interactive Experiences One of the winery’s popular events is the bottling lunch. Customers enjoy a twocourse lunch, then they get involved in the bottling process. Customers learn how to extract the wine from the barrels, fill the bottles and heat shrink the capsules. Each customer leaves with six bottles and their own personalised label.

Flavoured gins are also available.

The venue also offers personalised labels for special events such as weddings, anniversaries or a significant birthday. Last year they donated a bottle for each prize bag at the Yea Cruise Night car event with the event’s logo printed on each label. Other sponsorship has included personalised labels for the Alexandra CFA 150 year anniversary, fundraisers for the local scout group and a trivia quiz and Dutch auction to support the Yea hospital. “We like to help out those sort of community groups”, Steve says. Loyal Customers Keep Coming Back “Awesome customer service is what people can expect”, Steve says. Together with staff member Jess Ferris, visitors are guided through the tastings, starting with ciders before exploring the extensive range of wines on offer. They offer $20 tastings which include a cheese platter, a warm fireplace “which is an experience on its own”, Steve says.

There are always specials on offer for customers to leave with.

The sampling concludes with the popular chilli wine. The wine can also be used in risottos and pasta, salad dressings and vinaigrettes. Or you can drizzle it over a bowl of ice cream! Steve says customers leave with wonderful memories, good conversation and plenty of laughs. Many of the customers who visit The Yea Winery, Brewery and Cidery become dedicated clientele, joining the VIP service which is easily joined from their website. Customers enjoy a 20% discount voucher for birthdays and regular discounts off ciders and wines. Steve enjoys returning customers Some return customers visit every year. A couple from Geelong drop in for a wine

and a chat a couple of times a year, while another couple drive from Sydney to visit and restock their wines and ciders. “We get regular customers that might only call in once or twice a year, but they always come back”, he says. The bar even provides delivery for the local caravan park. “It’s just something we do for our customers”, Steve says. Looking Ahead Steve says although the wines have been the same price for 12 years, the price will soon need to increase, but customers remain their priority. “We really put our customers first, and we’ll keep looking after them.” Eventually, Steve and Jess plan to host more trivia nights, special events and live music so customers can enjoy what’s on offer in a relaxed atmosphere. Steve smiles, “We like to look after them”. And judging by the loyal customers who keep returning year after year, they certainly do. ucked away just a kilometre from the Maroondah Highway, behind the Black Spur Inn and at the foot of Mt Dom Dom, a family dream nearly three decades in the making is finally taking root. Surrounded by towering forests, nourished by rich mountain soil and fed by a year-round stream, Mt Dom Dom

Farm Fresh Produce is a new name in Murrindindi’s local food scene, but the story behind it reaches back long before its official launch in 2025. For David and Nicole Vulfs, the dream began in 1998 when they purchased their 19-hectare property at Narbethong. They were not simply looking for a place to live; they were searching for fertile soil, reliable rainfall

and the natural beauty that could one day support a productive farm. They found everything they were looking for. What they didn’t know at the time was that it would take almost 30 years for that dream to become a reality. “Life just seems to run away from us,” David says with a smile. Like many families, careers, raising Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2026 – 19

But the idea of building a farming business never disappeared. It simply waited patiently until the timing was right. An unexpected source of inspiration eventually helped turn those longheld ideas into action. After watching the television series River Cottage, the family found themselves thinking differently about growing food, living sustainably and creating something of their own. “We were looking for a different direction in life,” David says. “We wanted to start from scratch. We had a desire to find a property that had rich mountain soil, good rainfall, tall forests, a running stream and was surrounded by state forest. It was not too much to ask for, but we found exactly what we were looking for, and that was the beginning of the inspiration that became Mt Dom Dom Farm Fresh Produce.” Today, David and Nicole combine decades of experience from very different careers. David has worked in building supplies, hospitality, landscape gardening and horticulture. Nicole brings a strong background in hospitality along with many years in retail sales and management, including for Australia Post in Adelaide and later the Healesville Licensed Post Office. 20 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2026

Together, those varied experiences have helped shape not only the farm itself but also the way they work with customers. The venture has truly become a family affair for David and Nicole and their three sons, Jacob, Noah and Caleb. The couple are especially pleased that Noah is keen to play an active role in the new farming venture. Noah has been involved from a young age, helping around the property whenever he could. After studying horticulture at Ranges TEC in Lilydale and completing Certificates I and II, Noah now takes on the role of operations farm manager, investing countless hours into the business while planning to continue his horticultural studies. “It has always been something he’s loved,” David says. “Watching him become part of the business has been incredibly rewarding.” Rather than trying to grow everything, the family has taken a thoughtful approach to developing the farm. Over the past year they have been trialling different crops to discover what performs best under the property’s unique mountain conditions with minimal intervention. Their range now includes seasonal

One of the property’s hidden treasures was already there waiting for them. Growing naturally throughout the bushland are wild mountain pepper berries — a uniquely Australian native spice prized for its rich, peppery flavour. Along with the fragrant leaves, the berries are harvested and dried, allowing the family to share one of the region’s natural flavours with local chefs and food lovers. It’s discoveries like these that make every season exciting. “We’re constantly learning,” David explains. “Some things grow brilliantly; others don’t. Trialling is a really important part of what we do.” That willingness to experiment is helping them build a business based on what grows naturally in the local environment rather than forcing the land to suit a particular crop. Their customers are responding just as positively as they’d hoped. While many businesses celebrate trophies and awards, David believes the greatest reward comes much closer to home. “There is nothing better than hearing someone tell you the produce not only looks fantastic but tastes and smells even better.”

Those simple compliments provide all the encouragement the family needs. As demand continues to grow, so too do the plans for the future. Engineering plans have already been completed for a purpose-built growing, storage and packing facility that will allow seedlings, culinary herbs and microgreens to be produced throughout the year, including during winter. The facility will also solve another challenge familiar to many local growers: protecting crops from the region’s abundant wildlife. Anyone who gardens in Murrindindi knows the feeling of discovering that wallabies, wombats or other hungry visitors have enjoyed your vegetables before you have. The new facility will help ensure more of the harvest reaches customers instead. Sustainability also sits at the heart of the family’s long-term plans. Rather than allowing surplus produce to go to waste, they hope to introduce freerange Berkshire pigs, creating a practical cycle where fresh produce that cannot be sold can supplement the animals’ diet while reducing waste. “It’s about finding balance,” David says. “Growing enough to meet demand without producing unnecessary waste.” Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2026 – 21

Looking even further ahead, David and Nicole haven’t ruled out opening a farm gate shop where visitors can purchase fresh seasonal produce directly from the property. For now, however, their focus remains on supplying local businesses, building relationships with chefs and retailers, and delivering produce picked as close to delivery time as possible. They are also keen to expand their delivery area across the region, with hopes of reaching customers as far as Mansfield. As a young business, they know there is still much to learn, but they are equally excited about what lies ahead.

They also acknowledge the encouragement they’ve received from within the local community, particularly Di Kennedy and the team at the Black Spur Inn, whose advice, support and belief in their

business venture have helped give them confidence during its early days. “We are going to be reaching out to potential new customers, but we will always welcome enquiries,” David says. “We have set up a Facebook page, are working on a new website and look forward to meeting and working with new customers.” In many ways, Mt. Dom Dom Farm Fresh Produce reflects the best of Murrindindi itself — patience, resilience, hard work and a deep connection to the land. Some dreams take longer to grow than others. Jerusalem Creek Marina embarks on major three-year overhaul

or over half a century, the marina at Jerusalem Creek has been a familiar fixture for houseboat owners enjoying all that Lake Eildon has to offer. But as boats have grown bigger and expectations have shifted, the old infrastructure has started to show its age. Now, a major three-year redevelopment is underway to bring the marina into line with the needs of modern boating. “The marina itself here was built for houseboats that are 50 years old now, which were commonly just a single-story houseboat. Today, you’ve got massive, three-million-dollar houseboats that are three stories – it’s chalk and cheese,” says Bruce Vance, General Manager of Jerusalem Creek Marina & Holiday Park. “So it’s time to renew our houseboat berthing pens,

and we’re replacing all of that old infrastructure.” At the heart of the upgrade is a significant increase in berth size. The original marina featured 6.7-metre pens that were designed for an earlier generation of houseboats. Recognising the evolution of the fleet, the replacement marina will deliver larger and more versatile berths, with 7.5-metre pens for Category 1–3 vessels, 8.2-metre pens for Category 4-5 vessels, and selected 9.1-metre pens specifically designed for the larger Category 5 three-storey super boats now operating on the lake. This substantial increase in berth size provides owners with greater flexibility, improved accessibility, and increased confidence when manoeuvring and securing their vessels. Construction commenced in May 2026 and will be rolled out in three stages

through to 2029. The first stage alone will deliver six 9.1-metre pens, twenty 8.2-metre pens, and twenty 7.5-metre pens, along with 10 walkway sections and associated berthing infrastructure required to support this phase. Two further stages will follow, ultimately adding more pens and sixteen additional walkways across the marina as the old infrastructure is progressively removed. Much of the existing infrastructure will not go to waste. Reusable materials will be repurposed into a new protective breakwater system, increasing the marina’s resilience while helping to reduce the project’s environmental footprint. The new design brings a host of safety and durability improvements, including heavy-duty construction, anti-slip walkways, longer marina fingers for better vessel stability, mooring systems, Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2026 – 23

The marina has been a fixture on Lake Eildon for over 50 years, and was built for older boats. The extensive upgrades will ensure it’s suitable for modern houseboats. and modern fender systems replacing the outdated tyres long used for the job. Perhaps just as notable as the upgrade itself is how it’s being funded. Unlike many similar projects across the industry, there will be no special levies and no major upfront price hikes for berth holders. Fees for 2026–27 will rise only in line with CPI and operating costs, with any future adjustments introduced gradually as each stage of construction is completed. “We’ve been quietly squirreling away our money over the last 18 years of operation. We’ve budgeted for this, and we’re ready, willing, and able to do it. There’s not going to be extra cost for marina berth holders at Jerusalem

Creek, or any sign-up fees that are always a quick grab to fund projects,” Bruce says. He goes on to explain that the approximately $2 million being put towards the upgrade will support other Australian businesses: “All of the components that make up the marina have been purchased within Australia – they’ve been manufactured in Australia. So we’re reinvesting back in Australia, not abroad.” Once finished, the redevelopment will position Jerusalem Creek as a thoroughly modern boating destination – one built to handle the next generation of houseboats with greater safety, capacity and ease. Bruce

says Jerusalem Creek is unique in what it offers, with the broader precinct already boasting a lakeside caravan park, playgrounds, bar and bistro, a mini supermarket, a fuel outlet, and a fully stocked fishing and outdoor tackle store. Upgrading the mooring facilities is the icing on the cake for this all-in-one boating and holiday destination. “The marina replacement program gives houseboat owners an opportunity to come over here, and they’ll get more bang for their buck in terms of infrastructure – there’s no comparison to what we’ve got.” For more information on the marina, go to jerusalemcreek.com.au

or most of us, bugs are those annoying creatures that buzz around our heads, bite our arms and legs, and eat our plants.

But bugs, or invertebrates, as they are correctly called, play a vital role in keeping our entire ecosystem functioning. They pollinate plants, break down dead matter, recycle nutrients, disperse seeds and, of course, provide food for birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles. So, there’s a good case for bugs to be celebrated rather than feared and that’s what a project called Bug Hunt is trying to get people to do. Established in 2025, it is a joint project between the Invasive Species Council and Invertebrates Australia and is supported by National Geographic. Its signature event is the Bugs in My Backyard Week which will run from 16 to 22 November this year. The project and the week are encouraging everyone to get out into their backyards, farms, parklands and reserves and find and photograph bugs. without an internal skeleton. This includes moths, butterflies, beetles, wasps, flies, bees, spiders, snails, slugs, worms, grasshoppers, cockroaches and dragonflies. While helping people to better understand and enjoy the little creatures that live in our world is one aim of the project, there are other, more serious aims. Australia has around 100,000 scientifically named invertebrate species but, surprisingly, this is thought to be only 30% of the actual number of species in the nation. That means 70%, or roughly 200,000 of Australian invertebrates, remain unknown to Western science. Through projects such as Bug Hunt and the Bugs in My Backyard Week, the organisers hope to uncover some of these unnamed species. By participating, you could be the first person to find an unrecorded species. Even with our 100,000 identified species, information about their location is rather sketchy. In fact, we only know where half of these invertebrates actually live. Geographical distributions of the rest are either unknown or exist only on labelled specimens in museums waiting to be transcribed and digitised. The Bug Hunt project hopes to remedy this situation – at least to some extent. More information about location will also enable scientists to map changes in distribution in response to factors such as climate change. that remedial action can be taken. As a bug hunter you could be responsible for stopping an invasive species from taking hold in your area.

What is even more concerning is the fact that almost 1,000 of our invertebrate species are listed as being at risk of extinction in the near future. In fact, a study led by Charles Darwin University has estimated that, since European settlement in 1788, at least 9,000 Australian invertebrate species have already become extinct. Bug Hunt along with Bugs in My Backyard Week will help monitor these threatened species so that they can be better protected.

Now, you might be wondering how much you can really contribute by just looking around your backyard. The answer is ‘heaps’. In a trial conducted for a year in the backyard of a small house in inner Brisbane the owners managed to identify 1,168 species of invertebrates. Three of these had not previously been recorded and 16 had only a handful of records. So, urban backyards can certainly be considered productive places for bugs. Of course, if you want, you can also venture out to nearby parklands and reserves to do your bug hunting.

Another important aim of these projects is to keep track of invasive species such as fire ants, yellow crazy ants and shothole borers. These unwanted visitors can wreak havoc on crops and ecosystems and cost billions of dollars to control. If they are found early enough they can be stopped in their tracks before too much damage has been done. Every one of these ‘nasties’ that is spotted and photographed by participants will be reported to researchers and authorities so

Basically, you’ll need to download the free iNaturalist app onto your phone, create a free account, join the Bug Hunt Australia Project and then head out into your backyard to search for bugs. Good places to look for bugs include the undersides of leaves, ponds, leaf litter, soil, mulch, windowsills, lights at night, and compost bins. Once you find a bug, you can take a photo using the app or take it with your phone’s camera and upload the photo to the app later. Either way, the app will suggest an ID for your bug and you can either accept it or put in a general ID such as bee or snail. Be aware that the AI generated IDs in the app aren’t always accurate. Once your photo is uploaded, experts from the iNaturalist community may also suggest IDs for your observation. All iNaturalist observations are then sent to the Atlas of Living Australia, our country’s most comprehensive biodiversity database, where it is available for use by researchers.

It’s good to have geolocation activated for your photos because knowing where the photo was taken helps with identification. Where possible, it’s also good to take close-up shots of your bug, even if it just means zooming in, and from different angles, because small details can be important in differentiating species. Making sure the shot is in focus is also important although this can be challenging when the critters keep moving. Last year more than 5,000 people across Australia took part in Bugs in My Backyard Week and contributed a staggering 40,000 observations. So, why not use this event to get started as a bug hunter. Not only will you find out more about the extraordinary critters than live in your world but you will also be making a valuable contribution to science.

Yea Garden Expo

he Rotary Club of Yea Garden Expo will be held on the weekend of Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September, from 9am to 3pm each day. New this year will be two spring gardens in Yea available for viewing on the same weekend at a cost of $10 (includes both gardens). Why not make a weekend of it visiting Yea and surrounds? This is perfect timing for gardeners, busy preparing their gardens for spring colour. The Expo provides an opportunity to view a host of garden related products at the Yea Saleyards site on Flat Lead Road, just off the Yea-Whittlesea Road, a few kilometres

on the south side of Yea. The site is flat, sealed and easily accessible, and dogs are welcome, provided they are kept on leads. The cost of just $12 entry fee ($10 online) for adults includes free parking. Concession tickets are $10. Ample food options are available throughout the day, including egg and bacon rolls for the early starters, a gourmet barbecue, homemade soups and Devonshire teas, Indian food, and coffee vans. Close to 70 vendors will be on site with exhibits ranging from bulbs, seeds, seedlings, flowering plants, and trees, to garden tools and equipment, garden art and ornaments, compost and fertilisers.

There is even a plant creche where purchases can be safely left until ready for pick up on departure. The popular speaker program will feature lots of informative speakers, including the popular Craig Castree, on a range of topics from creating bee friendly gardens, garden design and much more. he beautiful king parrot is a regular sight in the Murrindindi Shire whether it is in our mountain forests, our urban parklands or even around our homes. The male, with his bright, scarlet head and chest and deep, emerald green back and wings is, as his name suggests, dressed like a king. The deep blue on his lower back (under the 34 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2026

King parrots are found along the eastern seaboard of Australia from Cooktown in Queensland to Port Campbell in Victoria. Their favoured habitats are rainforests or moist, eucalypt woodlands. However, you will rarely see them flying above the trees like many other birds because they prefer to move below the tree canopy weaving in and out between the tree trunks. As previously mentioned, king parrots have adapted well to certain urban environments and can often be found in parklands and home gardens especially if there are sources of food such as acorns, seeds, flowers or berries. Many people actively encourage visits from these delightful birds by setting

Unlike the more raucous and bombastic cockatoos, corellas and rainbow lorikeets, the king parrot is a quiet, gentle bird that is easy to have around. Whether in flight, resting or feeding this bird can often be heard making its single, sharp, high-pitched ‘kree’ calls often combined with coarser ‘crak’, ‘crak’ squawks and characteristic parrot chatter. King parrots breed from September to January. The female lays between three to five eggs on a bed of decayed wood dust in a deep tree hollow. While the entrance to the hollow can be as high as 10 metres in the air, the nest may only be located about 0.5 metre from the ground. The female incubates the eggs for about three weeks and, once hatched, the nestlings remain in the nest for around five weeks before fledging. Although this bird is not considered a threatened species from a conservation point of view, it is experiencing pressure from land clearing especially when mature trees with large hollows are destroyed. Recently, the town of Eildon celebrated the king parrot by installing an impressive, four metres high metal statue of the bird in all its glorious colour. It’s claimed to be the biggest king parrot in the world! The sculpture was created by Tank and Tobin Sculpture Works from Longwood, Victoria and is a fitting tribute to this spectacular bird. It joins a trail of bird sculptures dotted throughout north-east Victoria. You’ll find it at the corner of Central and Main Street. Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2026 – 35

Rebuilding after bushfire: a few things worth knowing

or anyone affected by bushfires, rebuilding can feel like a journey no one ever expected to take.

There are decisions to make, questions to answer and plenty of uncertainty along the way. Where do you start? Who do you speak to? How do you avoid costly mistakes? For Daniel and Jamie Pobjoy from MillBuilt, these questions are familiar. Before starting MillBuilt, they were among the builders helping families in Kinglake rebuild after the Black Saturday bushfires. That experience shaped the way they think about rebuilding today. “One thing we learned after Black Saturday was that people were spending a lot of money on house plans before they’d even spoken to a builder,” Daniel says. “Sometimes they’d arrive with a design they loved, only to discover it was well beyond their budget.” It’s one of several lessons they’ve carried with them ever since. Talk to a builder earlier than you think Many people assume they need 36 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2026

completed plans before approaching a builder. In reality, speaking with a registered builder early can help you understand what’s realistic for your site and your budget before investing heavily in drawings, engineering and permits.

It doesn’t mean compromising on your vision. It simply means having cost and construction advice alongside the design process, rather than waiting until the end. Understand what’s involved in being an owner-builder After losing a home, it can be tempting to look for ways to reduce costs. For some people, that includes becoming an owner-builder. While that can be the right choice in some circumstances, it also means taking responsibility for coordinating trades, managing timelines, navigating approvals and carrying much of the risk yourself. For many homeowners, engaging a registered builder under a fixed-price contract provides greater certainty and gives them someone experienced to take responsibility for delivering the project through to completion.

Rebuilding after a disaster is different One of the realities of rebuilding after a bushfire is that local trades and resources can quickly become stretched as entire communities begin rebuilding at the same time. This is where understanding all available building options can be valuable. Modular construction is one approach some homeowners consider. Rather than completing the entire build on-site, much of the home is constructed in a factory before being transported to the property. It isn’t the right solution for every home or every block, but for some homeowners it can provide greater certainty around the build process and reduce the amount of time required on-site. Starting conversations early and understanding your options can make a significant difference, particularly when planning timelines and budgets. By Emily Friedel Difficulty: Grade 3 (moderate) Length: Approximately 11km, 3.5-4.5 hours This hike takes you through lush forest full of mountain ash and tree ferns, with a bit of bush bashing on the way to the summit of Mount Dom Dom. It’s a good walk for those who have some hiking experience, a reasonable level of fitness, and are comfortable navigating unkempt trails. Although there’s no big payoff, the beautiful vegetation and birdlife should make it worthwhile for most nature lovers. Starting point: Start at the Dom Dom Saddle picnic area on the Black Spur. See the end of the article for alternative routes. Dom Dom Road: Head to the back of the picnic area and turn left onto Dom Dom Road, which is a 4WD track. This road takes you through the temperate rainforest that people usually marvel at from the inside of a vehicle as they drive through the Black Spur. It’s an easy road to walk, mostly flat with a couple of gentle inclines and declines. Mount Dom Dom summit: Keep following Dom Dom Road for around 1.3km, where you’ll find a track that

There isn’t much to see from the summit of Mount Dom Dom, but this is one view across the mountains on the way up. However, it is probably best to avoid this option. It’s heavily overgrown and difficult to follow, even with a GPS. If you lose the trail, you may find yourself surrounded by walls of thick tea tree that are taller than you and extremely difficult to move through. Instead, you would be wise to take the longer – but safer – route along Dom Dom Road for another 1.2km, then turn left onto Dom Dom Creek Road. From here, walk the final 2.6km back to the picnic area.

The point where Dom Dom Road forks off into Fisher Creek Road. this part of the trail. In terms of a payoff, there’s a cleared area near the top where you get a view out across the mountains, and if you go early in the day, the morning sunlight hitting the mountain ash on the ascent is quite beautiful. However, the summit is covered in dense bush and there’s not much to see from there. This is a walk that you do if you just enjoy being out in nature, not if you’re expecting a glorious 360 degree vista from the mountain peak. Once you’ve made it to the top, just 46 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2026

go back down the way you came up, continuing on Dom Dom Road from where you left off. Returning to the start: Keep walking along Dom Dom Road for another 3.8km, passing the point where it forks off into Fisher Creek Road. A little further down, you’ll see a cleared area and the map says there’s a Nissen hut here, but there doesn’t seem to be any sign of a building. The map also says there’s a trail at this point that cuts across the bush in a relatively straight line and rejoins Dom Dom Creek Road on the other side.

Other options: You can start and finish the walk at the Hermitage Trail, which is near the beginning of the Narbethong end of the Black Spur. This extends the walk by a total of 3.2km (1.6km up and back), adding roughly 30-45 minutes. Alternatively, you can start from the picnic ground and treat the Hermitage Trail as a pleasant detour. Dom Dom Road also joins onto other tracks in the area, which you could use to plan a longer hike. For example, the Road 8 track leaves from the picnic ground and loops back onto Dom Dom Road just before the Mount Dom Dom summit trail. For an easier walk, skip the climb to Mount Dom Dom Summit and just do the loop around Dom Dom Road and Dom Dom Creek Road.

Opening weekend – your fly fishing guide to the Murrindindi By Michael Hurren

here’s a particular kind of quiet that settles over the Murrindindi in the days before opening weekend. The rivers are up from spring rain, the willows along the Goulburn are just starting to green, and anglers from all over are prepping their gear in anticipation of the trout season ahead. The Murrindindi shire is trout country, has some of the best trout fishing on mainland Australia, and opening weekend is when it properly comes alive. The region rewards anglers who know where to look, and part of the pleasure of fishing the Murrindindi is that no two towns offer quite the same water. Eildon is the anchor point for many opening-weekend trips – the lake itself offering still-water fishing for those happy to work the margins and inlets, while the Eildon tailwater below the dam holds strong, cold, technical water that fishes well even when the rest of the system is running high and dirty Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2026 – 49

from spring rain. Great flyfishing can be had right from the pondage wall all the way to well past Yea, and depending on water temperatures, often as far as Seymour. That’s over 100 kilometres of fishable water. Thornton sits along the classic stretch of the Goulburn River and is a great place to start, with good wading access and a reputation among dry-fly anglers for reliable early-season Dun hatches, and as the season goes on, Caddis come on the menu, and as we come into summer, cicada, hoppers and Willow Grubs are go to patterns. There are many access points in this area above Thornton and below at the Breakaway, where the Acheron River runs into the Goulburn. This section offers wide shallow riffles and great dry fly fishing. Through Alexandra down to Molesworth and then to Yea, the river offers some slower sections, with riffles in between – great for evening rises. Marysville on the Steavenson River offers something smaller and more intimate – tight, scenic water that suits anglers happy to work a shorter beat carefully rather than cover a lot of ground, fishing with light gear. The small streams in this area are some of the best around with the Rubicon and Acheron being the bigger options, perfect dry dropper and Euro Nymphing water. The Steavenson, Taggerty, and Little rivers, and every piece of water from Marysville and over the hills to the Big River are amazing small stream, dry fly fisheries. On the other side of the hill, over near Yea, the Murrindindi and Yea rivers offer some amazing tight water fly fishing, and over near Flowerdale, the King Parrot Creek offers a slower water, with great hatches, and often spooky trout.

For visitors touring the region, rather than fixing on one river, the towns of Yea and Alexandra are great places to base – central, well-serviced, and close enough to everything to change plans if a river’s blown out.

Opening weekend conditions can be a mixed bag. Spring flows mean rivers are often running higher and cooler than late-season, and clarity can vary significantly after rain – so a flexible plan and someone who knows what each system is doing that particular week matter more than it might in the settled water of the summer period.

The carp war continues

ishers cherish their time on water, surrounded by nature and hoping for that fishy encounter but, everexpanding populations of carp threaten this experience as they undermine river health and displace native fish. Across the Murray-Darling Basin, carp account for up to 97% of fish biomass in some rivers. Not only do they damage the ecosystem by uprooting vegetation and degrading water quality but they also threaten at least 22 listed fauna species. Control efforts since the 1970’s have included harvesting, barriers, electrofishing and research into biological solutions such as the Carp Edema virus, genetic “daughterless carp”

technology and the proposed carp herpesvirus. Unlike other control methods which only provide short term benefits the carp herpesvirus could potentially cut populations by 40-60%. The Federal Government has committed $3 million dollars to expand and repeat this research. However, timelines for the completion of this research and the use of the herpesvirus remains uncertain. Over the last 15 years, while we’ve been waiting for a decision on the carp virus, there has been no federal government on ground investment in carp control. By contrast, over the same period, the federal government has invested more than $866 million dollars in control

programs for a dozen land based invasive species. In 2025, the VFA’s proposal to list carp as a key threatening process under the EPBP, a catalyst to prepare a national threat abatement plan, was rejected by the Federal Government. While some are not convinced about the effectiveness of using a carp virus, we can agree our carp problem is not going away and we need a national plan to work together to implement the tools we have as a priority. Alexandra Timber Tramway By Peter Aumann The Alexandra Timber Tramway Museum (ATTM) located at 7 Station St Alexandra is a hidden treasure in North East Victoria. It attracts thousands of tourists to the region each year on regular running days for train rides where they can immerse themselves in our local history. With a fleet of seven operational locomotives from a 1909 Fowler steam engine through some historic diesel engines to an electric locomotive, it encapsulates substantial local tramway history in one location. The Tramway operates numerous events and festivals each year from dog days, the Halloween spooky train, to the 2 day Heritage Machinery Festival. With nearly 100 members, a vibrant committee and a busy running schedule, the ATTM has become an important part of the Murrindindi tourist experience.

History of the Alexandra branch line Getting a railway to Alexandra was a drawn-out process. The line started life as a branch line at Cathkin in 1890 to ‘Alexandra Road’, now known as Koriella. Given the large amount of earthworks, the line didn’t make it to the township of Alexandra until 28 October 1909 with not much more than a platform. It wasn’t until 1911 that Alexandra station as we know it today was built. In 1911 a 2ft gauge tramway was built between Alexandra and the Rubicon forest, with almost 100 kilometres of narrow-gauge track that penetrated the mountain ash forests, carrying millions of super feet of timber from numerous remote sawmills to Alexandra and the Victorian Railways network. Later these tramways supported construction

of the pioneering Rubicon-Royston Hydroelectric Scheme and the building of the Lake Eildon weir by transporting heavy machinery, building materials and workers deep into the mountains. Shay Steam locomotives worked the 2ft Rubicon line until 1935 when it was determined that they were causing too many spot fires along the journey. At this time an order was placed for two diesel locomotives. They were built by Kelly & Lewis in Springvale and served on the line until the mid 1940s. Today both these locomotives still run at the Alexandra Timber Tramway as the oldest Australian built diesel locomotives in existence. Together, the railway, timber tramways and hydroelectric scheme created an extraordinary industrial landscape that drove employment, attracted skilled workers and underpinned the prosperity of Alexandra and the surrounding district for much of the twentieth century.

Although passenger services ended in 1945 and the branch line closed in 1978, the line out of Alexandra was not removed until 1988. The Alexandra and District Historical Society took over the care of the station buildings in the early 1970s to establish a museum. At that stage, the station yards were already run-down and overgrown with the buildings beginning to look dilapidated. In 1981, the Alexandra Timber Tramway & Museum was incorporated and has restored the precinct to what it is today. Thankfully, because of this foresight, Alexandra Railway Station remains one of the town’s most treasured heritage landmarks. Do you want to become a train driver? The Timber Tramway Museum has a diverse range of volunteer opportunities from laying track, being a train guard, restoring rolling stock, running the

station shop, blacksmithing, gardening, social media, and maintaining our vast collection of local history. As the tramway grows, we desperately need more help. We offer social outings and try to have a lot of fun along the way. It’s a great place to meet new people and working with ATTM as a volunteer could even become a new hobby. Heritage Machinery festival Each October, the Alexandra Tramway holds the Heritage Machinery Festival and now in its fourth year it is fast becoming a major event in the heritage sector. The festival displays steam engines, locomotives, blacksmithing, vintage cars, trucks and tractors, working stationary engines, draft horses, vintage displays of lost trades, market stalls, food trucks and the opportunity to drive a locomotive yourself.

The whole of the Alexandra Tramway precinct comes alive with movement and activity – it’s a fantastic event for all ages. The festival is held over two days on 2 and 3 October and attracts exhibitors from across Victoria and abroad. The future for Alexandra Timber Tramway Museum ATTM is now embarking on an exciting new chapter. Its vision is to transform the historic railway precinct into one of regional Victoria’s premier heritage tourism destinations by extending the heritage tramway across the precinct to create a better visitor experience; constructing a modern locomotive restoration and maintenance facility with volunteer accommodation; workshops that will become a future volunteer hub, and restoring the historic goods shed as a vibrant exhibition and community events space, complemented by immersive visitor experiences and still serviced by a train.

very spring, as the weather warms and grass begins to flower, a particular kind of weather warning starts appearing alongside pollen forecasts. Thunderstorm asthma alerts may feel routine now, but a decade ago most Australians had never heard of the phenomenon. A devastating incident one November night in 2016 catapulted the term into public consciousness. What is thunderstorm asthma? Thunderstorm asthma is what it sounds like: an asthma attack triggered by environmental conditions caused by a local thunderstorm. Research suggests that several environmental conditions need to come together for thunderstorm asthma to occur. First, there needs to be a high amount of grass pollen in the air. In Australia, ryegrass is the main culprit. When rain and moisture hit airborne ryegrass pollen, the grains can burst open, releasing tiny particles so small they can bypass the nose and throat and travel all the way down into the lungs, triggering severe respiratory responses – even in people who have never had asthma before. Thunderstorm winds push these particles down to ground level where people are breathing. Some people are more vulnerable than others. Those most at risk are people who have developed a sensitivity to grass pollen over time, people with a history of hay fever, and people who have been diagnosed with asthma, especially if their asthma is poorly controlled. People who have Asian or Indian ancestry also have greater risk of thunderstorm asthma. The 2016 catastrophe On 21 November 2016, a storm rolled over Melbourne and triggered the most catastrophic epidemic thunderstorm asthma incident recorded anywhere in the world. An estimated 10,000 people flooded emergency departments with severe asthma attacks, overwhelming ambulances and hospitals that had no way of anticipating the scale of what

was coming. Ten people tragically lost their lives. It was the first time deaths had ever been recorded from a thunderstorm asthma event, and it prompted a significant overhaul of public health monitoring and awareness across Victoria. Why Melbourne? Although the 2016 event was a shock, thunderstorm asthma itself was not new. Melbourne recorded its first known case back in 1984 – just a year after the phenomenon was first identified in Birmingham, England. Since then, Melbourne has remained the world’s most significant hotspot for these events, accounting for more than a quarter of all known thunderstorm asthma events globally. The reason comes down to geography and weather patterns. Melbourne sits at a collision point between hot, dry winds sweeping down from central Australia and cooler air moving in from the south. When these air masses meet, they create ideal conditions for thunderstorms. Those same northerly winds also carry large quantities of grass pollen from farmland into the city – and grass pollen, it turns out, is the key ingredient. And what about the Murrindindi Shire? Although Melbourne is known as a hotspot, the surrounding regional areas of Victoria are also susceptible to thunderstorm asthma events. This includes the Murrindindi shire, where there is an abundance of grazing land thick with grasses

producing copious amounts of pollen during spring and early summer. For this reason, Victoria’s Department of Health now has thunderstorm asthma risk forecasts available through the VicEmergency website and app for the whole state, broken down into nine weather districts. These forecasts are available from 1 October through to 31 December. What to do at high-risk times Keeping an eye on the forecast to ensure awareness of risk levels is the first step to avoiding thunderstorm asthma. However, the forecast is no substitute for good year-round management of asthma and hay fever. Anyone with current, past or undiagnosed asthma, or who experiences hay fever in spring, should consider themselves at risk. Those with both conditions, or poorly controlled asthma, face a higher risk still. The key steps for those at risk are straightforward: • When a storm is approaching, get inside, close windows and doors, and switch off any air conditioning that draws in outside air. • Keep a reliever puffer on hand, know your asthma action plan (if you have one), and familiarise yourself with the four steps of asthma first aid. On days when the risk is elevated, the Victorian Department of Health issues advice and warnings through the VicEmergency warning platform (emergency.vic.gov.au).

Derrin Nauendorf – musician rediscovers his passion for music

“Derrin’s music moves my soul.” Tony Joe White By Simon McKenzie

cclaimed Australian singer, songwriter and guitar player Derrin Nauendorf has spent more than three decades building an international reputation through his energetic blend of high-energy roots, blues, and folk music (with a bit of rock thrown in for good measure). With over 4,000 shows and 13 albums to his name, he has toured relentlessly across the UK and Europe, earning critical acclaim and a loyal fan base. Five years ago during the height of COVID-19 pandemic, Derrin made a life-changing decision and moved back to Australia, burned out from constant touring demands and looking for a quieter life for himself.

Today, living in Alexandra in Victoria’s north-east, Derrin is rediscovering his passion for music by exploring new sounds and making music that excites him. In doing so, he is reinvigorating himself and his career. Early influences and musical beginnings Derrin grew up in Geelong and his formative years were spent at Oberon High School where he was introduced to music at 15 years old. He was walking past the music room and heard Stairway to Heaven being played on an electric guitar. “It just stopped me in my tracks,” he recalls. “I thought, ‘Wow . . . what is that?’” He knew then what he wanted to do with his life.

His family didn’t have much money so his music teacher lent him a guitar. “I just really went for it”, he says. Derrin was a natural talent with the guitar and soon became quite accomplished. He was already dreaming big. In his high school yearbook he wrote that he wanted to be an international touring musician, and that’s exactly what he did. “I don’t know how many people can say what they put in their yearbook that they actually did,” Derrin says. Building an international career At 26 years old – after playing in local bands since age 16 – with just $2,000 and one contact phone number, Derrin flew to the UK to follow his dream and success quickly followed. Derrin still has his distinctive style, but feels the music is completely different to his past – more organic. “I’m finding it really exciting to see where the next part of the journey goes”, he says. Rediscovering creativity Two years ago Derrin moved to Alexandra after a simple day trip. He went for a drive and had lunch at the Corner Hotel. I just went, “Wow, this is beautiful here.” He now enjoys a slower pace of life. Although he enjoys playing solo, he has formed friendships with local musicians. He is exploring new guitar sounds and relishing his unforced creative process. “It’s kind of like let’s make pure creative music”, he says.

Derrin has formed a band – The Nads – with Sid on drums, and Richie playing bass. “Loud middle aged men have made a power trio”’ Derrin says. Their first gig is at Pixie Bar, Eildon on Satruday October 10 from 8pm. “The crowd just went nuts”, Derrin says.

Burnout and a new perspective

He bought a van, put a bed in the back, and started touring around the UK.

Eventually the constant touring took its toll.

This was before the internet, back in the days when a musician could ring a pub and get a gig for about £120, which included a meal too.

He remembers living in Spain when he realised he had burnout. While taking a few months off in Adulucia, he was asked to play a gig in Italy.

“It was those days when the pub was like your second lounge room.”

“I had travelled so much, I wasn’t looking forward to it. That was crazy. That moment wasn’t lost on me (that’s when I knew I had burnout).“

A good show would spread like wildfire and gigs just kept rolling in for him. He was ambitious and “really wanted to make a good life for myself”, he says. With just a mobile phone and a diary, he was determined to succeed. British radio embraced his music and the British press gave him strong support. Before long he was supporting musicians and bands such as Deep Purple and Ben Morrison.

But after thousands of shows, he didn’t want to play anymore. He stepped away from music and didn’t play for a number of years. The relentless touring, and a few health issues, had forced Derrin to stop and reassess his life.

During his busy years he would move from France to Germany to Holland, sometimes forgetting which country he was in.

When COVID arrived he packed up and returned to Australia. Ironically, during lockdown, Derrin picked up his guitar out of boredom. He discovered fresh sounds and began exploring new territory with his music.

For more than 30 years, he was able to pick and choose gigs and the touring never stopped.

“It’s about the music and the sounds and just all this excitement of exploring that world again”, he says.

His musical journey continues to evolve and music now feels like it did when he was a teenager. All these new sounds are coming out that he’s never heard before. Fiddling with electronics and getting everything exactly how it sounds in his head. Derrin notices a change within himself. “I feel like I’m a musician and not a machine”. What’s next Time away and rediscovering himself has transpired into a new appreciation for music and life. Recently, he spent time with fellow local musician Julian Laucious whom he describes as “a wonderful talent”. “It’s exciting to jam with someone again and see what we create.” Derrin is excited about the future and is thinking of doing a small tour around Europe later this year, and he continues to work on a new album. “I’m really excited about music again, to be hungry again to create is just the most wonderful feeling.” Today, he is enjoying himself, and his music. n an area with many talented artists and artisans, finding a suitable venue to exhibit your art is not always easy.

Mansfield businessman Dean Belle had an idea to help solve this problem. Dean offered a beautiful, historic building at 101 High Street Mansfield as a pop-up gallery to feature local art, ceramics and sculpture, with plans to open a restaurant later this year. A little bit of history In the late 1860’s, the Court House Hotel, now the Delatite Hotel, had their horse yards and stables on this site. In 1908 a substantial building was built for the Conlan brothers, then owners of the Delatite Hotel, to house the Mansfield Mens Club, boasting ‘the largest billiard table in town’. Over the ensuing decades this beautiful building, with tall, arched pressed metal ceilings and a stained glass atrium had a variety of uses from apothecary to photography studio. Domingo and Sandra Diaz then set up their gallery and restaurant ‘Mingo’s’ which also became a showplace for The Mansfield Mountain Country Art Show. The gallery today Dean wished for this wonderful building to be used – to not remain empty – to be a hub for the artistic culture of the region. He approached long time friend and fine artist, Marian Rennie, with this vision in mind. Marian is an Australian artist living and painting in Acheron, near Alexandra. She immediately saw the potential and with her usual flair and energy set to work.

Marian understands that a gallery needs to be a warm and welcoming place – somewhere you can comfortably linger and enjoy the atmosphere as you contemplate a purchase.

For most people art is a very personal thing. For the artist it means emotion and experience. Their observations of the world are translated into a form that can be shared by all. A work of art can draw you in or push you away. It can confront you or inspire you and transport you emotionally to a different place and time. Marian’s work takes you from narrow city streets and vibrant colours of urban living to the open countryside and it’s richly muted shades of the Australian landscapes and skies. She has always expressed her life creatively through events, stories and relationships on canvas. Her early exposure to art and the adventurous nature of her pioneering ancestors triggered a global travel lust and art making. Her work has been exhibited in many overseas locations including the UK, Japan, New Zealand and Italy. She has had regular exhibitions and worked for the National Gallery of Victoria, The Australian Ballet, Handspan Theatre, Circus Oz and Cascade Films, producing small and large scale art works, installations, public murals, costumes and set design. On her return to her family home in Acheron in 2004 she developed a thriving community arts centre. Marian has fascilitated a range of artistic events involving both the local community, the broarder Australian community and international visitors. These include large scale public events featuring music, sculpture, art exibitions, creative garden events and art and cooking workshops. Marian has previously stated that a strong sense of generational pride and love of the land has entrenched in her a sense of time, place and belonging. She transfers these stories and connections into her art. Marian enrolled her friend and Alexandra ceramic artist Mandy Willaton to help set out the space. Mandy trained as a graphic designer and had a successful career as a set decorator and graphic/visual designer in film

and television in Australia and overseas. After retiring from the film industry she rediscovered pottery. She rarely uses a wheel, prefering to hand build using the various types of clay available to her. Mandy loves to experiment with glazes and sources them world wide. A major influence for her is the free form Japanese Style. Her vases have a vibrant naturalness that make them stand out at exhibitions and markets. Yea artist and sculptor Darren Gilbert is another artist exhibiting at the gallery. Darren’s sculptures repurpose salvaged metal from old sheds and homes across Victoria. Each piece carries a unique history absorbed over time. His sculptures employ the Fibonacci sequence, a mathematical equation that helps him map out each piece. As rust forms naturally on the surface of the sculpture it adds a beautiful earthy quality to each piece. Dean and Marian have invited other local artists to exhibit to create a unique community art experience.
