Keppel Cafe owners, Khor Wieren and Eve Chang, with some of their staff. Khor credits much of their success to the hard work and versatility of the team. Khor says ex-apprentice Reece helped perfect the gourmet pies, and ex-apprentice Shailin played a key role in getting the cafe to where it is now.

From palace to pie shop by Emily Friedel

A

s a chef, Khor Weiren is no stranger to catering for fast-paced, high-profile events. But Marysville’s slower pace of life and the opportunity to start his own café there has led Khor and his wife, Eve Chang, to settle and start a family. After completing a four-year culinary degree in his birth country of Malaysia, Khor wanted to travel and experience the profession in other places. This desire took him to Singapore where he worked at air shows and Formula One races. He even made regular appearances at the residence of the country’s leader. Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2024 – 13

Top: the cafe’s interior is bright, vibrant, and spacious. Khor’s mum has adorned much of the inside with floral decorations and greenery, giving the cafe a distinctly Asian feel. Above: the menu is varied and changes every few months, which means locals and visitors alike can find something to their taste. Right: the cafe even offers house-made cold drinks that are canned on the premises. “I was working at the Orchard Hotel, which is a five-star hotel. I went to the Istana, which is the presidential palace, probably more than anyone. The Orchard is one of the trusted hotels and they do a lot of catering there,” Khor says. Singapore not only gave Khor a taste of what was involved in preparing food for groups of up to 1,500 people, but it also gave breadth to his cooking skills. “In Singapore, it’s not just the local cuisine, but because it’s an international hub as well and everyone goes there, they have to cook every cuisine that’s available in the knowledge. There’s nothing comparable in Australia to the coverage of the fare,” he says. 14 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2024

The contrast between the bustling island city-state and the sleepy country town of Marysville is stark on many levels – from climate to culture. Khor’s and Eve’s arrival in the Murrindindi Shire around eight years ago highlights some of the striking differences. “I remember when we first came here [to Marysville] and there was only one hotel. On my first day arriving here, we didn’t have anywhere to eat and we didn’t have a car and we had to walk to the golf club. I think it took about half an hour. Because it was in the wintertime, we were on our phones with the torch light, and it was pretty scary because you can’t see what’s around you. But we needed to at least get some food – we were so hungry,” Khor says. While it may have been chilly on that first night, Khor warmed to Marysville and he and Eve have made it their home. Their family has also expanded with two daughters who are growing up in the tranquillity of the small town.

“I’m quite surprised myself to be in this town for eight years, but I have grown into it. I like Marysville: it’s good, it’s peaceful, and Marysville has a really nice community – that’s why I’m still here,” he says. Khor worked in several local hospitality establishments for many years, including the Duck Inn where he was the head chef. However, he had always wanted his own business. With the help of former Duck Inn owners, Ashraf and Christine Doos, Khor and Eve finally took the plunge with the launch of Keppel Café in March of 2020. Unfortunately, their grand opening happened just before Victoria’s first Covid-19 lockdown. “So we were only open for two days. We got everything in stock and everything ready to go, and during that lockdown was pretty hard especially with all the new stock coming in. We had to clear everything out, so we actually gave some away or we had to repack to minimise the wastage,” Khor says.

Keppel Café weathered the storm of Covid with the assistance of their generous landlord. Having worked in high-pressure environments may have given Khor the resilience to bounce back and make a go of it after the lockdowns. “We have only two people in the kitchen, and that’s it. So on the busiest day we have two, on the quietest day we have one. The busiest day we have ever had in here we served about 400 meals. That’s pretty big for two people. My other chef [Jonathon Lim], he was also in Singapore for a couple of years, so he also has those skills. So we are all very efficient and the productivity is very, very high,” Khor says In addition to the efficiency he developed working overseas, Khor has applied what he learnt there to add a little spice to Marysville’s food scene. “We change our menu every three months because for me, I can’t stick to one menu for too long. I need to keep myself fresh and have something new all the time. It’s modern Australian cuisine, it’s a mix of everything – Italian, Greek, Asian and some Asian flare as well,” Khor says.

The gourmet pies have a butter-based pastry and a range of mouth-watering fillings, often with international inspiration. For example, Tuscan chicken or beef rendang. Hot and even frozen pies are available at the pie shop, along with family-sized pies, which are made in deep pans to ensure generous portions.

“We do a lot of Asian nights, where we have Asian foods and Asian takeaway. Sometimes we do like the Thai night or the Hong Kong night. So just trying to put as much of our knowledge to into the food and let people try and taste of something different.” Over the last four years, Khor’s and Eve’s business has crept down the main street to include a gourmet pie shop and a produce store, which is also where their house-made gelato is whipped up. In the produce store, customers can find a range of locally made goods, Keppel Café apparel, and take-home versions of some café items. Khor says the jams and relishes they make are very popular, as is their rosemary salt. In the past, they have had a kafir lime tamarind relish and a bell pepper relish, but availability changes with the café menu. With the gourmet pies, Khor puts his spin on an Aussie favourite. They are made from scratch with a flaky, buttery pastry and a range of fillings, which Khor is always changing and perfecting. His pies won many accolades at the Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2024 – 15

Great Aussie Pie Competition in 2022 and 2023, and he says that the red wine beef bourguignon and the truffle mushroom pies are favourites with café-goers. Pie fans looking for something a bit different might find other enticing fillings available, like Buxton smoked trout or Korean beef or Thai tofu. As the temperature drops over autumn, hot pies are always a winner. But if a pie for lunch isn’t quite enough, there are frozen pies available for people to take home and have later. “Sometimes I sell more frozen pies than hot pies,” Khor says with a chuckle. “I don’t mind, as long as they’re enjoying the pies, that’s the main thing.” Khor runs the café in a very handson manner and goes wherever he is needed, whether that be cooking in the kitchen or front of house serving customers. He says the other Keppel Café staff are just as adaptable. “I’m lucky enough my whole team,

they are all over everything.” Jonathon might be found clearing tables or taking promotional photos and Molly Love, who is often behind the counter with the coffee machine, is the chief pie-maker too. Eve, who has been busy with their young children for the past couple of years, is also returning to the cafe. “She was the barista before our first kid was born, she worked right up until a week before labour, and she’s always known for great coffee in the town. Now she can, she’s coming back to work this year,” Khor says. So with their young family and growing business, Khor and Eve have put down firm roots in Marysville. And even though it’s a far cry from his days working at the palace in Singapore or Formula One, Khor is more than happy with how things have panned out. “I just love it here.” For more information on Keppel Café or Marysville Gourmet Pies, to order online, or to find their socials go to linktr.ee/keppelcafemarysville

Ros Ritchie: awardwinning winemaker

Ros Ritchie in the shady courtyard of Magnolia House. Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2024 – 19

In the last three years Ros Ritchie wines have been awarded two trophies, 11 gold medals, 29 silver and 56 bronze.

by Carol Hopkins

F

or Ros Ritchie, an award-winning winemaker from Mansfield in northeast Victoria, deciding to pursue this male-dominated career was not all that surprising because, as she explains, she “grew up with wine”. Her childhood was spent on the family farm, Delatite Station, just outside of Mansfield. Her parents bottled their own wine, which they bought in bulk from wineries, and there was always wine on the table. As well as running sheep and cattle, Ros’ father liked to grow different crops such as buckwheat and peas and, after a chance conversation with legendary South Australian 20 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2024

winemaker Jim Irving, he decided to try growing grapes. In 1968, when Ros was only 10 years old, the first vines were planted, and from then on she found herself working, from time to time, in the vineyard. A few years later, the family produced their first vintage, and Ros remembers this moment with great affection. “I have photographs of Mum stomping on grapes in a blue baby bath and then putting them through a little cider press. That was really fun.” Although Ros’ parents knew their wine had promise, they realised they needed

help to make it commercially viable. So they approached Brown Brothers, a renowned winery in north-east Victoria. A year later, Brown Brothers produced the first commercial wine from the family’s grapes. It was called ‘Delatite Special Individual Vineyard Riesling’ and straightaway won multiple gold, silver and bronze medals. Brown Bothers continued to produce wines, under the Delatite label, until 1982 when the family established their own winery. During this time, Ros went to South Australia and completed a Bachelor of Agricultural Science (Oenology) at the Roseworthy Agricultural College, returning to the family farm in 1981 to help establish their winery and take on the role of winemaker. To expand her knowledge, Ros made several trips to the wine-growing regions of France, Germany, Italy and North America, exploring the wine and food of those regions, indulging her passion for aromatic wines such as riesling and gerwütztraminer and piquing her interest in pinot gris. Ros was the winemaker at Delatite Winery for 25 years and produced an extensive, award-winning collection of white and red wines. After leaving Delatite, Ros and her husband, John

Ros Ritchie Wines produces 16 varieties and specialises in cool-climate wines, in particular, the ‘aromatics’ such as riesling, gerwütztraminer and pinot gris, which have strong floral notes. Adams, decided to establish their own winery. Their venture got underway in 2008, but it wasn’t easy as they were starting from scratch. “We didn’t have a vineyard of our own and so we visited a few local growers and they agreed to sell small batches of grapes to us,” Ros explains. To make the wine, they leased a shed in Mansfield and fitted it out with secondhand equipment plus a brand new refrigeration system. And so, Ros Ritchie Wines began. Being located at the base of the Victorian Alps, Ros specialises in cool-climate wines and, in particular, the ‘aromatics’ such as riesling, gerwütztraminer and pinot gris, which have strong floral notes. These are among the 16 varieties of wines that Ros currently produces. Others in her range include chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, vermentino, fume blanc, rosé, pinot meunier, merlot, nebbiolo, tempranillo, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz.

While Ros still buys small quantities of carefully selected grapes from local growers, she and John now have shares in the nearby Barwite Vineyards and have planted their own reisling, pinot gris, chardonnay, pinot noir and shiraz grapes. In addition, Ros inherited a small vineyard known as Dead Man’s Hill, which is planted with gerwürtztraminer. Ros’ skill as a winemaker is evident in the wealth of awards she has collected for her wines under both the Delatite and Ros Ritchie labels. In the last three years alone, from 2021 to 2023, Ros Ritchie wines have been awarded two trophies, 11 gold medals, 29 silver and 56 bronze. Additionally, many of her wines have consistently scored 90 points or more in the James Halliday Australian Wine Companion. When Ros and John first established their own winery, they didn’t have a cellar door, relying on mail order and a distributor to sell their wines. That all changed in 2017 to 2018 when they purchased the historic Magnolia

House in Mansfield and opened their own cellar door. Magnolia House was originally shipped as a Victorian-era kit home from America to Melbourne in the late 1800s and was erected in its present location in 1908 by the then owner of the Mansfield Courier, Harry Amor. Before Ros and John made their purchase, Magnolia House had operated as restaurant for 40 years. The house owes its name to the magnificent magnolia tree that has been growing in the garden for well over 100 years and provides abundant shade to a delightful, outdoor seating area. With Ros’ and John’s purchase, this beautiful and unique house, with its Victorian-era ambience, has received a new lease on life. Ros now runs a regular ‘Friday Night Drinks’ event from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, where you can drop in for a glass of wine and a grazing platter and maybe even hear some live music. In winter, soup and pizzas are also on offer. On Saturdays and Sundays, from 11am to 4pm, the cellar door is open for wine Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2024 – 21

Food is not routinely provided, but you can phone a couple of days in advance and order a grazing platter to enjoy after your wine tasting either in the elegant dining room or out in the shady courtyard. Ros also runs special food, wine and music events for occasions such as Australia Day, Easter, Mothers Day or Fathers Day. In addition, Ros can host your own private functions whether

it be a birthday party, wedding, work event or even a wake. With the erection of a large, air-conditioned marquee, known as The Pavilion, in the grounds of the house, Ros can easily cater for up to 120 people and even more for standup events. And, with Magnolia House’s huge, well equipped commercial kitchen, catering for events is easy. People can bring their own caterers or Ros can arrange for one of Mansfield’s excellent caterers to do the job. When asked about her plans for

the future, Ros simply says “to keep going”. After overseeing an impressive 40 vintages, and accumulating a staggering number of awards for her wines, it’s clear that Ros has the experience, skill and drive to ensure Ros Ritchie Wines continues to go from strength to strength. Ursula Jenkins at Kinglake Library where the Kinglake Boomerang Bags group meets every Wednesday without fail. Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2024 – 25

The heavy-duty Kinglake Boomerang Bags are available for free at local venues, including the Kinglake FoodWorks.

The Kinglake Boomerang Bags group hopes that by providing their bags at no cost, they can help eradicate plastic bags in the town. 26 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2024

By Emily Friedel

K

inglake Boomerang Bags has been on a mission to make their town plastic free for the last eight years. In that time, together with the Whittlesea group, they have made around 10,000 shopping bags from fabric that would otherwise have gone to waste. Many of these hand-sewn bags have been given away at the Kinglake FoodWorks, providing an eco-friendly alternative to the thick plastic bags offered to those who don’t bring their own. Ursula Jenkins, chief organiser for the Kinglake and Whittlesea groups, says the original idea behind Boomerang Bags is all in the name: customers would use the bags then return them. However, this didn’t work too well because people would just end up keeping them. So, Kinglake Boomerang Bags leaned into this, and although they kept the name, their philosophy

shifted to embrace the community’s preferences. “It’s your own bag. They’re sticks, not boomerangs – they don’t come back,” Ursula says. People are often surprised to be given a lovingly handmade bag to keep, for free. And for Ursula, this type of reaction provides motivation to make more bags. “That’s what drives me, that’s what I get a kick out of,” she says. The quality of the Kinglake Boomerang Bags may be part of the reason people find it hard to believe they’re being given away. Originally, the bags were made from a single piece of fabric – as are most of the Boomerang Bags sewn by groups across the globe that have joined the movement. But the Kinglake group has upped the ante by making theirs a bit fancier. “There are about 1,300 Boomerang Bags groups all over the world, and not

many of them will do a lined bag like us. They might make lined ones to sell, but we give our bags out for free at the supermarket. We’ve had a few fundraising ones – if we get some beautiful upholstery fabric or screenprint a special message on them, we’ll sell them at the post office. But overwhelmingly they’re free, and you can just take them,” Ursula says. Although effort is put into bag aesthetics, they’re designed primarily to be functional. Specifically, they’re made to lug groceries around – even heavy loads. “They’re a huge bag – they’re based on one of those supermarket bags. They’re not meant to be a handbag or a small tote bag; they’re meant for shopping. They’ve got really thick, nice handles, and we’ve tested them with two three-litre bottles of milk,” Ursula says. The group behind these tough but pretty bags are volunteers with varied sewing skills. Some had never touched a sewing

machine before joining, but that’s not an issue. There are other jobs people can do when starting out, such as cutting material or ironing, and the bags are a great item for beginners to learn on when they’re ready. “You can guide people fairly simply. It’s all straight sewing, one straight line. There are no corners, no zips, there’s nothing fancy – it’s a straight line so you can’t muck it up,” Ursula says. The group is also varied in terms of its members’ backgrounds and their reasons for coming along. Some are professionals, others are retirees or stay-athome parents. Carers for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) have also brought their clients in to diversify their activities. Ursula says people join for something to do or perhaps for the opportunity to be creative, and the group is great for those who enjoy a chat. For at least one member, joining happened by accident.

meeting about the CWA [Country Women’s Association] at the community house and Ursula just gave me a job. So I didn’t join the CWA, I joined Boomerang Bags. I was only meant to go for five minutes, and I was there for four hours. And I’m still here!” Michelle Goldsworthy says with a laugh. The group meets every Wednesday at the Kinglake Library without fail – even during school holidays – and anyone is welcome to come along. Everything is set up so that volunteers aren’t out of pocket for

their contributions, with tea, coffee, and lunch being provided whenever possible. Group members are also spoilt for choice with materials. The fabric they use comes from all sorts of places: people clearing out their old linen, deceased estates, and the local op shop, which passes on items they can’t sell. The group even takes animal feed bags, which are made into bags for carrying home soggy clothes from the childcare centre after the hose has come out on a hot day. Recently, Kinglake

Boomerang Bags launched their library bags for the Yea and Alexandra libraries, and the Murrindindi Mobile Library Bus. The Whittlesea group has made library bags for Yarra Plenty Regional Libraries for many years, and Ursula approached Whittlesea Lions Club for support to expand this project by purchasing five brand new disability-friendly sewing machines to be shared by the Kinglake and Whittlesea groups. “We are extremely grateful that the Whittlesea Lions Club sees the value of Boomerang Bags in terms of its environmental impact and also social connection and community spirit building,” Ursula says. Making more bags, and bags for different purposes, will no doubt keep the group busy and propel them forward in their mission to

eradicate plastic bags. But Ursula is also keen to see the grassroots movement spread further with more people starting their own Boomerang Bags groups. She has even extended an offer to help others get their own sewing team happening. “You can contact us any time, and I will help you start a group. It’s a great way to get out of the house and make new friends – avoid the washing or the laundry! – and give back to the town.” For more information on Kinglake Boomerang Bags you can go to their Facebook page @ KinglakeBoomerangBags or join the ‘Plastic Free Kinglake’ Facebook group or check out their listing on the main Boomerang Bags website https:// boomerangbags.org/listings/kinglakevic-australia-kinglake-boomerangbags/

Groups all over the globe have joined the grassroots Boomerang Bags movement in an effort to reduce plastic use.

Stu Coward’s journey as an electrician started in the early 90s with some work experience. Now he has a thriving electrical technology business with nine employees. With a multi talented team and a ‘no job too big or too small approach’, Stu says they’re always striving to keep their customers happy.

E-Tec – a thriving electrical technology business

Y

ou can’t see electricity, and it can kill you. For a young Stu Coward, these were two very good reasons not to become an electrician. He wanted to be a carpenter. But fate had other plans.

the Murrindindi Shire and beyond. Coming full circle, Johnny is among the nine employees at the company.

In the early 90s, Stu’s father Michael worked as a contractor for Telstra in the Alexandra branch. It was there that Michael crossed paths with electrician Johnny McKernan. Michael asked Johnny if he’d be willing to “take his young bloke on” and Stu ended up doing a couple of weeks work experience under Johnny’s guidance.

“He comes around most weeks just to see what’s happening, and if he hangs around too long, he gets given a job. We do a few undergrounds and he’s the guy that sits on the trencher and digs. The boys have been told he’s not allowed on the shovel because I don’t want him working too hard, I don’t want him busted. But you’ll often find him on the shovel because he doesn’t think the boys can dig as well as he can. He’s a hard one to keep down,” Stu says.

After those two weeks, Stu changed his mind about becoming a sparky. “I couldn’t get enough of it. [Johnny] made it the thing you wanted to do. He was fun, outgoing, crazy. He just made going to work worth going to work for,” Stu says. Fast forward some thirty years, Stu now runs his own thriving electrical business, E-Tec Electrical Technology, which provides electrical services throughout

Stu’s dad is still around too and is a regular presence in the E-Tec crew.

Other team members include office manager Karen, who’s been with the business for twelve years, and Stu’s sister, Lucy, who joined the team a couple of years ago as Operations Manager, to help tackle the growing demands of the business. Since it began in 2000, E-Tec has

expanded its staff and services, adapting to keep up with ever changing technology, regulations and the needs of home and business owners. Together with Stu, the company now employs four qualified electricians and two electrical apprentices. E-Tec provides both residential and commercial electrical services – from underground services, to security systems, home automation and general electrical maintenance. And when it comes to the things like off grid solar installations, Stu explains that their team’s local knowledge can help inform client decisions. For example, living in a foggy area means there is a reasonable chunk of the year where solar energy production can be hampered at nature’s hand, which requires careful consideration when designing a suitable system. Local knowledge is also handy for simply finding the work site sometimes. “The boys are always [ribbing] me for giving them a five-minute speech on Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2024 – 31

The E-Tec crew. From left to right: Adam Wallace, Dan Renfrey, John McKernan and Josh Palmer. “At the end of the day, family comes first, and all the team know that. If they’ve got something going on and it’s family related, that takes priority,” Stu says. So even though electrical connections are E-Tec’s trade, connection to family and community are just as much a part of the business. Being a sparky may not have been Stu’s first choice, but it seems to have been the right one. For more information on E-Tec Electrical Technology and their services visit their website etecelectrical. com.au or call them on (03) 5751 0000

More team members: Mark Watts and Kev Carr. where the house is. ‘Why can’t you just give me the address?’ ‘ I don’t know the address, but I can tell you how to get there,’” Stu says with a laugh. Beyond being able to find his way around, having lived in Alexandra all his life means Stu and his business are firmly embedded in the community. Stu volunteers for the CFA and is heavily involved in coordination of community events such as the Alexandra Rodeo and Truck show, as are some of the staff. “Through E-Tec we also sponsor a number of events and community groups. My two children grew up here and the team are all locals, it’s important to me that we give back where and when we can,” he says. E-Tec also emphasises the importance of family, which is fitting given Michael’s ongoing involvement in the business and his role in getting Stu his start as a sparky. 32 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2024

Eastern Spinebill: a flashy garden visitor

by Carol Hopkins

A

ny resident of the Murrindindi Shire with a garden full of flowering plants will almost certainly receive a visit from a delightful, colourful honeyeater known as the eastern spinebill. This fast and flashy visitor can be spotted darting amongst shrubs and trees, using its long, fine, downward curving beak to slurp nectar from flowers. While most honeyeaters need to perch to feed, the eastern spinebill has another trick up its sleeve. It can, if needed, hover in front of flowers to take a drink. This behaviour has led to it being light-heartedly labelled Australia’s hummingbird.

But nectar is not the only source of food for these birds. Insects also form an essential part of their diet because although nectar is high in energy, it is relatively low in nutrients, meaning birds like honeyeaters have to look to other sources of food to get a balanced diet. The eastern spinebill has quite an extensive distribution. It can be found in forest, woodland, heath and parkland all the way along the eastern and southern fringe of Australia from Cooktown in Queensland to the Flinders Ranges and Kangaroo Island in South Australia. It also occurs in Tasmania. Unlike many honeyeaters, eastern spinebills do not travel long distances. A long-term study involving the mist-netting, banding and re-capture of 3,602 birds discovered that Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2024 – 39

99% of the birds were less than 10km from their original banding location. However, some birds are known to engage in altitudinal migration, moving down from mountainous areas in winter and back up again in summer. The eastern spinebill is quite distinctive in appearance with the male having a black crown, which extends in a curved black line down either side of a white chest. It also sports a rufous splash on the chest just below the beak. The underparts of the bird are rufous-brown while the wings and lower back are dark grey. Females are similar in appearance, but their colours tend to be more muted than the males. Juvenile birds lack the distinctive markings of the adults and are a plain grey-brown, darker on the back and lighter on the front and have a brown, rather than a red, eye. In reality, you are more likely to hear eastern spinebills before you see them. They have a loud, high-pitched, staccato, piping call which is often repeated in short bursts. They are also quite noisy in flight and so you may initially be alerted to their presence by the whirring of wings as they dash past. Compared to other birds, eastern spinebills are relatively tame, and will tolerate humans coming quite close to them. Eastern spinebills breed from August to January and may raise one or two broods. Their nest is a small cup of twigs, grass, moss and bark combined with hair and spider’s web that hangs by the rim in a fork of a small tree or shrub anything from one to five metres from the ground. While both sexes collect nesting materials, only the female builds

the nest. She then lays between one and four eggs, although two eggs are most common, and incubates them for fourteen days. Once the eggs are hatched, both sexes feed the chicks for a further 14 days until they are ready to leave the nest. Eastern spinebills are surprisingly long lived with some making it to 13 years of

age or even longer. From a conservation point of view their populations are listed as “secure”. It you want to attract these delightful birds to your garden the answer is simple: plant plenty of flowering plants, particularly those with long tubular flowers such as grevilleas and correas. And, of course, keep your cat inside!

Beautiful trout cod reintroduced into the Upper Goulburn River By Dr Taylor Hunt

E

ndangered Trout cod (Maccullochella macquariensis) have been reintroduced into the Upper Goulburn River to re-establish the historical population and help take another step towards recovering the precious, endangered, native freshwater fish species! Although long suspected to be a separate species from Murray cod, trout cod (or blue-nose cod) were only formally recognised in 1972. The species doesn’t grow as large as Murray cod (commonly 40-50cm and less than 5kg, maximum 85cm and 16kg) and is distinguished by a protruding upper jaw, lack of markings on the head, except for a horizontal stripe and some more pronounced spots on the body (absolutely gorgeous fish species). Like many other Australian freshwater fish species, trout cod were once abundant across the Murrindindi Shire, northern Victoria and the MurrayDarling Basin, however a range of factors, including barriers to fish migration and loss of habitat, have restricted populations to just a handful of locations today. To help conserve and rebuild remaining populations, the species is almost fully protected from fishing harvest.

The Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) are committed to recovering native threatened fish species such as trout cod and have been working for many years on restocking programs and habitat restoration to bring back populations. In early February 2024, these efforts took a step further when VFA, Arthur Rylah Institute researchers and recreational fishers intensively surveyed lakes Sambell and Kerferd, near Beechworth in northern Victoria to catch mature trout cod using electrofishing, fyke netting and mesh netting methods. The trout cod were transported to the Upper Goulburn River (upstream of Lake Eildon and Jamieson) where they were inserted with acoustic tags by fisheries scientists and then released into their new riverine habitat.

Trout cod were historically present in the Upper Goulburn River and this release will kickstart re-establishing the population prior to the stocking of trout cod fingerlings into the Upper Goulburn River planned for next summer. So, if you are up Jamieson or Kevington way, perhaps even wetting a line in the river, keep your eyes peeled for a pretty looking cod – as it just might be one of our trailblazers helping to re-establish their numbers in the Upper Goulburn River and ultimately across northern Victoria and the Murray-Darling Basin. Remember if you catch a trout cod by accident, they are fully protected and need to be returned carefully to the river. If you are fishing with bait, we recommend the use of circle hooks, to limit gut hooking.

The acoustic tags will help the team monitor survival and movement of translocated trout cod to inform future translocations as a strategy to reestablish trout cod populations.

By re-establishing populations of trout cod across the Murray-Darling Basin, we move closer to downlisting the species and bringing back another option for recreational fishers to catch, which is the ultimate goal of the National Trout Cod Recovery Plan.

Interpretive signage is being installed at access points along the river to let recreational fishers and the public know trout cod are present in these waters and how they can help to care for them.

If you’d like to chat about trout cod or share your latest fishing report, feel free to contact Taylor Hunt, VFA Fisheries Manager on 0418 478 028 or taylor. hunt@vfa.vic.gov.au Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2024 – 43

The junior competition heated up in 2023 with close to 60 juniors honing their angling skills during the event.

Lake Eildon Fishing Challenge By Peter Burtchell

O

nce again the Lake Eildon Fishing Challenge returns to the Jerusalem Creek Marina and Holiday Park kicking off at 2pm on Friday 17 May through to 11am Sunday 19 May. Held on Victoria’s premier inland fishery, Lake Eildon, the annual communitybased fishing competition raises much needed funds for Variety – The Children’s Charity – and has been running since 2017. The competition is open to all bait and/ or lure anglers with or without a boat. The prize categories for the longest fish captured and released include Murray cod, yellowbelly, brown trout, and rainbow trout. Junior competitors have their own prize winning categories of Longest Native, Trout and Carp. This year there are also two competition entry raffles: a “Murray Cod Fishing Machine” consisting of an Infiniti Ranger 3.65 metre tinny complete with Hidea 15 HP outboard; Haswing Cayman B GPS Electric Trolling Motor; Lews Baitcaster

reel and a Murasame Cod Rod. An added bonus for the juniors this year is the second competition entry raffle where all junior competitors have a chance to have their entry drawn to win a fishing kayak. Every competitor receives a lucky dip showbag which includes door prize raffle ticket, competition brag mat and a host of other giveaways. Added to the entry raffles, Snag Tree raffle tickets are available for purchase and some lucky winner will take home over $3,400 worth of lures, rods, reels and accessories. The 2024 event merchandise will also be available for purchase during the weekend. Over past events the off-lake entertainment has been well received by competitors. On the Friday evening a ‘safety and fishing brief’ will be conducted at the 501 Café located at 501 Jerusalem Creek Road, Eildon. Saturday evening will see another auction in full swing and midday Sunday presentations will once again be hosted by some of Australia’s best fishing characters. Sponsors this year are from far and

wide and include a great selection of Aussie lure and rod manufacturers, vessel hire, guided fishing tours, Japanese manufactured lures rods and accessories, Aussie brewers, and adventure accommodation providers. Added to the over $50,000 in prize giveaways many popular anglers and presenters will be present throughout the weekend to discuss all things fishy. Visit the Lake Eildon Fishing Challenge website lakeeildonfishingchallenge.com to keep abreast of event and sponsor news leading up to the event. During his address to the 2023 Lake Eildon Fishing Challenge Bruce Vance, the proprietor of the Jerusalem Creek Marina and Holiday Park, thanked the efforts of all organisers, sponsors and participants who have contributed their time, energy and funds into making the competition such a success. Captain of Variety Bash Car 501 and the Jerusalem Creek Charity Committee (supporting the Murrindindi Little Athletics) Bruce commented that, “Funds raised will go a long way to Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2024 – 45

Clarkes Lane gently undulates through farmland.

Picturesque walks on country lanes Part 2: by Carol Hopkins

T

his is the second in a series of articles on quiet, picturesque country lanes in the Murrindindi Shire, which are perfect for short, relaxing walks. The first of these articles can be found at https://issuu. com/murrindindiguide/ docs/murrindindi_guide_ summer_2023-24. These lanes often provide fresh glimpses into the beauty of our shire and make a refreshing change from walking around town or on the rail trail. The walks described in this series are all relatively easy, on good gravel or bitumen surfaces, and are out-andback routes of around 1–1.5 hours requiring minimal navigation. They can easily be shortened – or in some cases lengthened – depending on your fitness 48 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2024

and the time you have available. Even though these roads are not particularly busy, it is always best to walk facing the oncoming traffic, move off to the side of the road when you hear cars or motorbikes approaching and, if possible, wear bright clothing. It’s also a good idea, particularly in warmer weather, to have water either with you on the walk or in the car for when you return. So, instead of just walking the same old routes, why not try something different and sample some of the delightful country lanes our shire has to offer.

Getting there: From the Endeavour Service Station in Alexandra, travel along the Goulburn Valley Highway for 7.7 km and then turn left into Clarkes Rd. After 400 m, you will see cattle yards on the left. Park your car here, making sure you don’t block the track or gates giving access to the yards. If you are travelling from the other direction, Clarkes Rd is 3.5km from the Thornton butcher’s shop.

Distance: 4 km return

Description: This is quite an exposed walk, with a bit of up and down, and so it is best done in cooler weather. In winter and early spring, you may encounter a couple of muddy patches, but you can usually work your way around them.

Highlights: Expansive views across farmland, dotted with trees and dams, to the Torbreck Range and the Goulburn River.

From the cattle yards, the unsealed Clarkes Rd goes through a gate and then starts to climb gently uphill. After about 30–40 mins of

Clarkes Lane Locality: Thornton

walking, you will reach a spot that provides fabulous views over farmland to the Torbreck Range on your right. Looking straight ahead you can also catch a glimpse of the Goulburn River. The road then descends and, after a few minor undulations, ends at a gate in a pretty copse of trees with a sign saying ‘Private Property’. After a short break to enjoy the birdlife in this area, retrace your steps back to the car.

Grannies Lane Locality: Whanregarwen Distance: 7.4km return Highlights: Abundant birdlife and attractive bushland especially at the Crystal Creek Rd end; elevated views over farmland to distant hills. Getting there: Take the Maroondah Highway

Above: views of the Torbreck Range from Clarkes Lane. Right: Grannies Lane winds though pretty woodland through Alexandra towards Buxton. From the Park Life caravan park on the outskirts of town, drive 2.4 km and then turn right into Whanregarwen Rd. After another 2kms turn left into Crystal Creek Rd and travel 2.2 km until you see Grannies Lane on your left. Park your car near the intersection. Description: From Crystal Creek Rd, follow the narrow, gravel Grannies Lane through pretty woodland, which is usually buzzing with birds, particularly in spring. Soon, the road begins to gently climb and, after about 1.3 km, you will reach a high point from where the road descends through rolling farmland dotted with groves of eucalypts. At the bottom of the hill, you will pass under powerlines and, after a further 2 km, you will enter a tree-lined section with lovely views over a wide valley to the distant hills. The walk continues until you reach the Maroondah Highway where you need to turn around and retrace your steps. Alternatively, you could leave a second car here and only walk 3.7 km. MolesworthDropmore Road (northern section) Locality: Caveat Distance: 4.2 km or 6.2 km Highlights: Shady walking alongside the beautiful, lush forest of the Caveat Nature and Conservation Reserve with outcrops of massive granite boulders.

Getting there: Take the Maroondah Highway to Molesworth. 400 m from the Molesworth pub, just near the bridge over the Goulburn River, you will see the turn-off to the CaveatDropmore Rd. Follow this winding, gravel road all the way to a T-intersection with both Highlands Rd and Caveat-Dropmore Rd. Park your car on the verge at the intersection.

Frees Road Locality: Gobur Distance: 6.4 km Highlights: Pretty tree-lined lane that passes a succession of large dams with abundant birdlife. Getting there: Take the Maroondah Highway to Yarck and turn into Yarck Rd, which runs alongside the Yarck Hotel. Follow this road for 9.5 km and then veer right onto the Kanumbra-Gobur Rd just before Godfrey’s Creek. Follow this road for 1.9 km until you see Frees Rd on the left. Park your car on the verge at the intersection. Description: This is a gently undulating walk along a narrow, gravel, tree-lined lane. The area is known as a birding hotspot and so you should hear and see plenty of birds, particularly in spring. After a short distance you will see a succession of large dams on your left, one bordered with tall reeds. It’s worth pausing for a closer look at these dams as they often support water birds such as coots, hens, ducks, grebes, herons and egrets. Continue along the road until you reach the entrance to Kaloomah Herefords where there is another large dam and a pleasant view across the paddocks to the hills beyond. Turn around here and retrace your steps. Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2024 – 51

Parents make mistakes

So what does ‘good enough parenting’ look like? By Cher McGillivray, Assistant Professor Psychology Department, Bond University This article was originally published in The Converation https://theconversation.com/

There is a huge amount of pressure on parents today – from feeding babies the “best organic purees” to making sure older children get all the developmental opportunities they could possibly need, while of course documenting the whole thing on Instagram. There is also no shortage of advice about how to go about this. Just as there is no shortage of debate about the “best way” to parent your child. But what if parents just focused on being a “good enough parent” instead? You do not have to be perfect in order to do a good job of raising a child. In fact, it may be better if you are not. What is ‘good enough parenting’? We know parenting matters in a child’s life. Research tell us parents influence their child’s development, resilience and expectations of themselves and others.

This in turn determines their behaviour and wellbeing. “Good enough parenting” theory was developed by UK paediatrician and psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott in the 1950s. He found children actually benefit from mothers who “fail” them in some ways. This does not mean parents can neglect or minimise their role in making sure children are safe where they live, learn and play. Children also need to have their emotional needs met. They need to know they are loved and feel a sense of belonging. But good enough parenting recognises parental failure is an inevitable part of life. Experiencing sadness, tears and anger are part of childhood and parents should allow children to gradually tolerate some frustration. The good enough parent realises it is not possible to be available and immediately responsive all of the time. What does it involve? Winnicott noted when babies are very little, their needs are attended to almost immediately. If a baby cries, the parent will feed or change them. But as the child grows, they do not necessarily have to have their needs

met immediately. Parents can allow them to develop a tolerance for some uncertainty – or things not going the way they wanted – while still caring and responding to their basic needs. This is important because life does not always go as we expect it to and children need to develop resilience. What does good enough parenting look like everyday? As a starting point, ask yourself “what does my child need from me?” Good enough parenting focuses on tuning in to and responding to your child’s emotions and needs. These needs will change over time. For example, a good enough parent realises they need to respond quickly to their baby’s hunger cry. Whereas a teenager is learning to navigate life. A good enough parent will at times have to allow their child to face consequences of their choices. At the same time, don’t try to “stop” emotions. Good enough parenting is about being there for your child if they are sad or angry, but not preventing them from being sad or angry in the first place. It can be helpful to think about suffering as not caused from emotional pain but from avoidance of uncomfortable emotions. Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2024 – 53

And don’t set unrealistic standards for your child. For example, if it’s dinner time and they are tired and hungry, don’t expect them to tidy their room. Set boundaries Being a good enough parent also means accepting your child for who they are. Children need unconditional love from a parental figure to develop a healthy sense of self. So, if you have a child who is more interested in soccer than maths (or vice versa) don’t try to change them. At the same time, do set boundaries –

such as “please don’t interrupt me when I’m talking” or “I’d like you to knock before you come into my room” – and try to be consistent about enforcing them. Not only does this help define your relationships (as a parent and child, not two friends), it also teaches your child about healthy boundaries in any relationship. Things won’t always go to plan As we know, things won’t always go as we want or expect. So if you feel angry with your child, model how to

This means you will have the energy and capacity to parent tomorrow and into the future. And ask for help when you need it. Nature is at the heart of Ann Knight’s creativity.

Ceramic artist inspired by nature by Carol Hopkins

A

Given her fascination with the nuances of the natural world, it’s not surprising to learn that nature is at the heart of Ann’s creativity.

“I love the way nature creates these wonderful colours, textures and tapestries,” she says. “I am constantly looking at plants, the bark on trees, rock formations, the waves on rocks, the horizon, and the clouds.”

But Ann is not aiming for a replica of what she has observed. Rather, it is an impression or an abstraction of her observations that find their way into her ceramic works. This, in turn, often prompts an image or memory in others, and although it might be quite different from the one that Ann had in mind, it highlights the capacity of her works to ‘speak’ to different people in different ways.

lexandra-based ceramic artist Ann Knights loves being out in nature whether it’s in the mountains, by rivers, in the desert, or at the beach.

She is particularly intrigued by the finer details in nature, what she calls “the inner surfaces and cracks” and discovering “what’s inside and what’s below”. 56 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2024

“All my inspiration comes from the nature,” she says.

Ann attributes her love of nature directly to her grandmother who took her for walks in the bush and at the seaside and shared her passion for the natural world. She also sparked Ann’s creative interests by teaching her to knit, sew, weave and embroider, all from a very early age. “When I was five, I had a little hand sewing machine and I used to make doll’s clothes with it. Later, when I was growing up, I’d make my own clothes to wear out and I’d try and copy the fashions of popular designers such as Norma Tullo or Prue Acton.” Summing up her grandmother’s influence Ann says, “She awoke in me a joy in creating and a pleasure in making.”

Ann’s foray into ceramics began in the early 1970s when she undertook short courses in hand building and wheel work. Ten years later, she spent close to a year with an innovative pottery group in Brisbane. However, the pressures of raising a family and running several successful businesses meant that Ann could only ever dabble in pottery. “Life just didn’t allow me to fully indulge,” Ann admits. That all changed in 2018 when she moved into semi-retirement. At that point, Ann said to herself, “I’ve always wanted to do something creative and I like ceramics and so I’m going to go for this.” Ann started by enrolling in a short course at the School for Clay and Art in Brunswick, Melbourne. She then joined their one-day-a-week studio program and things really took off from there. As Ann explains, “You are there with so many creative people. You are encouraged to do what comes naturally, what’s innate.” The program emphasises “making without thinking”. Through this “just do it” approach, students develop their own creative style.

“You start doing the things you like to do without a lot of thought,” Ann says. “Of course, a lot of the time you are focusing on what you want to achieve, but sometimes you just do exploratory things. You might have a piece of clay that collapses but, all of a sudden, it takes on a form you would never have thought of. Then you can turn it into something that you really like and start moving in a new direction.” Ann’s ceramic pieces are all hand built; no pottery wheel is involved. Taking slabs or coils of clay, Ann uses her hands to build up the basic form of the object and then creates texture in a variety of ways including applying feldspar, clay, slips (clay of a consistency that can be painted or pasted onto a surface) and even objects such as seed pods, bark, wood or rusty iron and also by carving lines in the surface. The pot then undergoes its first firing in the kiln. After firing, Ann then adds layers of glazes and oxides, before the final firing. “There’s a lot of layering in what I do,” Ann says. “It’s a lengthy process.” Ann likes to make objects that are not only beautiful but functional. “I like the idea of having beautiful cups and plates for dinnerware. There’s no reason why Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2024 – 57

you shouldn’t spend money on something that you eat or drink out of every day.” Many of the pieces she creates have multiple uses. For example, a bowl on a stand can be separated to serve as both a vase and a fruit bowl. Large pots have the potential to be used for flowers or as containers for pot plants. Ann’s ceramics have already won awards – a ‘Best in Show’ at an exhibition at Sol Gallery in Brunswick and a ‘Highly Commended’ at the Kinglake Art Show. Last year she took part in Dindi Open Studios and was delighted with the positive response she received from visitors to her studio. On Labour Day weekend this year, from 8–10 March, Ann will be exhibiting her work at the inaugural Poets in Pottery exhibition, which is part of the Mansfield Pottery Festival. (See madpotters.org.au for more details). Although Ann only took up ceramics in earnest five years ago, she is already creating unique and diverse pieces that not only capture the essence of the natural world but also prove that beauty and function can go hand in hand. If you would like more information about Ann’s ceramics you can go to her Instagram page @ann_knights_ceramics, give her a call on 0417 382 365 or send an email to annzknights@ gmail.com.

aster is magic at Rennie’s Gallery at Acheron. A sculpture exhibition and show commences with a cocktail party on Thursday 28 March at 5.30pm. Add to this the shared excitement with revellers while nibbling on fresh-made canapes, sipping sumptuous Little River Wines and rocking to the dulcet sounds of local musicians, Soloman and Lacey. Tickets are available through www. ticketebo.com.au and search for Sculpture at Acheron. Ron Ahl: “All in all, several gloves, lots of recycled materials, welding consumables, gas, numerous scratches and hours of work, go in to continuing my “love / hate” relationship with barbed wire.”

barbed wire around a supporting, stainless steel core. 650 to 700 pieces of high-tensile wire are then brazed to the top of the core to create the ‘grass.’ The stems go all the way to the base and the seed pods are mild steel, textured with bronze streaks. Award-winning Australian-based sculptor, Mark Niglia is driven by the desire to communicate emotion. He creates movement and life that allows others to interpret feeling through sculpture. Mark explores the interaction between horse and human. The strength and power that a horse possesses, yet its ability to calm and heal, allows Mark to create a wide breadth of emotion through the form of a horse.

Sculptors from all over Australia have exhibited their works in this annual event and this year’s offerings again include many outstanding and talented artists, such as Ann-Maree Gentile, who specialises in joyful, whimsical one-off clay sculptures and often from whatever is on hand, recycling and playing with different materials. Her work has a strong ‘pop’ influence with many recurring themes and icons.

Andrew Kasper is a South Gippsland and Melbourne based artist who specialises in corten and stainless-steel sculpture. His work aesthetically aims to present both a sense of joy and contemplation. Through symbolic, rhythmic and kinetic forms, his work engages with the environment, whether private gardens, outdoor public spaces, or the undulating and rugged cliffs of coastal Australia. The beauty of Andrew’s sculpture is enhanced by their material relationship to the landscape in which they sit, interacting and moving with the rise and flow of natural forces such as the sea, wind and Australian light.

Ron Ahl is also renowned for his clever use of recycled materials. This grass tree (Xanthorrea) was created by wrapping approx 450m of rusty

f you’re in need of a unique gift idea, look no further than the locallycrafted goods and accessories on offer at Kinglake Creative. Launched in October 2021, Kinglake Creative is a not-for-profit group that prides itself on its dedication to the community through the sale of products made from local items by local artists.

On offer at any time of year is a range of more than 60 artworks from various local artists, sourced from Kinglake and surrounds where possible. Items available include jewellery, pottery, bath bombs, soaps, candles, pyrography, and floral works, as well as paintings

covering different genres and styles. Kinglake Creative director Georgina Beausang says the shop was founded from a desire to sell locallymade goods and products to the surrounding community during the COVID pandemic, providing an option for artists to generate income and exposure. “We noticed living in Kinglake that there were a lot of artists and makers in the same circumstance,” she says. “It’s notfor-profit, it’s all run by the community for the community and we take a small commission to cover our rent and that’s about it.” “We’d like to thank the community for

the support that they give us, they’ve been very generous. All the money goes back to the makers and we’ve taken $200,000 in two years, which for a small little shop in Kinglake is pretty incredible,” Georgina says. Kinglake Creative is open 10am to 4pm Wednesday to Sunday. People can drop into 2/6 Whittlesea-Kinglake Road and have a look for some creative shopping, all while giving back to the local artists and makers from the region.

Kinglake Creative is home to a wealth of handcrafted, quality products and wares made with love by the creative folk of the Kinglake community and surrounds. Open Wednesday to Sunday 10am-4pm Follow us on Facebook & Instagram @kinglakecreative 64 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2024
