Phillip and Sharon Martin in front of their herb and vegetable patch.

by Carol Hopkins

W

e all have dreams. Some of us get to realise them, some not. For Sharon and Phillip Martin, owning their own rural property and living a self-sufficient lifestyle had been their long-held dream. Even as a teenager, when riding his horse in the Victorian High Country, Phillip remembers yearning to purchase his own piece of land. However, as with many people, life got in the way. As Phillip explains, “I met Sharon, we had two boys, and it was essentially ‘head down, bum up’ for 30 years.” But the dream never went away, and when their sons finished school and started tertiary studies, the time felt right to re-ignite their passion for a sustainable, off-the-grid lifestyle. The Yea area had always been a favoured location for Sharon and Phillip, and

while it took some time to find the right property, they finally moved from the Mornington Peninsula to a 65-acre farm near Yea in late 2017. Even before they moved, Sharon was busy laying the groundwork for their new venture by completing a sixmonth, hands-on permaculture design course. The principles of permaculture – which emphasise managing land and resources in an integrated, sustainable and self-sufficient way – have become the guiding force for Twin Creeks Farm, the name of their property. Sharon also developed a passion for herbs during the permaculture course.

2,500 hours of study, she completed the Herbal Immersion Program. This course covered all the medicinal herbs and their identification, propagation, foraging, blending, and producing herbal products. Even now, Sharon is continuing with studies in advanced herbalism, naturopathy, and forest therapy.

“One of the facilitators on the course just loved medicinal herbs, and it was due to her that I got completely hooked,” she says.

At first, Sharon wasn’t sure how she would use her herbal studies, but Twin Creeks Farm quickly proved to be the ideal setting for growing and developing her herbal products. Currently, she grows 37 medicinal herbs and 15 medicinal tree species along with plants for food. She uses 18 of these medicinal herbs in a range of specially blended teas and combines these with herbs, and even mushrooms, from other Australian organic suppliers.

Sharon began studying herbs in earnest. Over two-and-a-half years and

The Twin Creeks Farm range of herbal teas is impressive – over ten different Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2022 – 11

Twin Creeks has hand crafted a loose leaf herbal blend, to relax the mind and body, and assist in a rejuvenating, sound sleep. There’s Immune Boost, Ultimate Detox, Mind Focus, Sweet Dreams, Feminine Vibe, and Energise, to name a few. Each blend contains between five and nine herbs, all in carefully measured proportions. The ingredients in each blend, and their medicinal properties, are clearly listed on the website. Sharon also makes a coffee substitute from roasted chicory and dandelion roots. Although Sharon has only been producing her herbal tea products for less than a year, she has developed a loyal following. “The teas are like a pot of gold. Not many people know about them, but once people do know, they keep coming back to the pot,” Phillip says. If the teas sampled by the writer of this article are anything to go by, this is not surprising as they taste amazing. Customers also vouch for their health benefits. However, Sharon and Phillip are keen to point out that medicinal herbs have the potential to interact with other medicines, so if you are on medication, you should check with your doctor before consuming herbal products. Sharon sells her teas online through the Twin Creeks Farm website as well as through local outlets such as The Grant Street Grocer and Wildcrafted Beauty in Alexandra, the Yea Wetlands shop, and High Country Hampers in Taggerty. 12 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2022

Sharon donates 50 cents to the Yea Community House for every online sale as she is a strong believer in supporting the local community. The road to a successful herbal tea business has not been easy. When Sharon and Phillip first arrived on their property it was nothing but bare paddocks. Phillip has spent the last four years putting in a driveway and bridge, building an energyefficient house, erecting sheds, fences and animal enclosures, planting over 500 trees and shrubs, establishing garden beds, laying an extensive watering system, and raising a small number of niche cattle, sheep, chickens, Peking ducks and geese. Phillip admits he hasn’t always gotten it right. “I made a lot of mistakes, but you learn from those mistakes and push on.” He also says that “nature didn’t welcome us with open arms”. In the first few years, they battled a grasshopper plague, destructive gangs of cockatoos, a local drought and the biggest flood in the district for 100 years. Nonetheless, the Martins now have a property that is completely off-the-grid, organic, self-sufficient, and carbon positive. Everything produced by the farm, or brought into the farm, stays on the farm. The only exception is plastic waste, which Phillip takes to the tip in Yea every so often. Vegetable scraps are fed to the chooks, cuttings go into the compost, weeds into the worm farm, paper and cardboard are used as mulch, and manure from the animals helps to fertilise the garden. “Everything works in together,” Sharon says.

Although much has been achieved, Sharon and Phillip say there is still much to do. In terms of her herbal business, Sharon plans to expand into making herbal balms and salves. She is also interested in running education sessions and farm tours. At the moment, however, Sharon is happy producing her range of herbal teas and is confident that as more and more people try her products, the business will continue to grow. With both the business and the farm, Sharon and Phillip Martin have proven, beyond doubt, that it is possible to pursue your passions and make long-held dreams come true. C

liff Mintern’s signwriting stick takes pride of place on a windowsill at Alexandra Signs. The stick is about half a metre long with a ball on one end that would be placed up against the sign while its owner steadied his forearm on its length to keep his brushstrokes precisely controlled. Years of hard work are evidenced on the stick’s surface, which is coated in a thick layer of different coloured paint spots. Cliff’s daughter, Julie Evans, has carried on his signwriting business, and she speaks fondly of her dad as she demonstrates how the signwriting stick was used. Once considered a necessary tool of the trade, it is not something Julie has much need for in the digital age of signwriting, but it brings back many happy memories.

16 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2022

“As a little kid, I can remember Dad signwriting by hand with the stick. Dad used to go around and do windows by hand, sale signs and that sort of thing, but now you can just get the vinyl, so it’s much quicker,” Julie says. Alexandra Signs started in the late 1950s when Cliff was working as a house painter and discovered a demand for signwriting. “He was painting and people wanted signs and he thought he could do that. I think a guy he knew was a sign writer and must have shown him a few things and he went from there. He had lots of books, lots of calligraphy books, and he just figured it out. He loved it,” Julie says. Cliff apparently had a knack for signwriting and was able to work freehand – a skill Julie still marvels at.

Signwriting has changed a lot since Cliff’s days, and most of Julie’s work is done using modern tools of the trade. “He had a wall at the old shed, so he’d put a banner up, and then he’d get chalk and just roughly scribble out what he was going to do, and he’d just sit and do it,” she says. While Julie was able to learn the trade, she says for handwritten signs, she still relies on stencilling her designs first and then filling them in. She puts her dad’s abilities down to his artistic streak. “He could paint and draw. He scribbled when he wrote, he didn’t really write beautifully, but he could paint. I think you’ve got to have a flow in you. He was different from someone like me who has to really use science to think about it. He used to paint for a hobby, go out and paint the Cathedral, and he could draw cartoon characters – I remember him doing pictures of Goofy,” Julie says. In the late 80s, Cliff decided it was time to retire and sold the business. This only lasted a few years before he felt compelled to go back to signwriting at the ripe old age of 70. Then, in 1991, Julie came on board and took over the jobs that Cliff wasn’t too keen on, including anything computer-related and the bookwork.

Thirty year after she started working with her dad, Julie is now running a modernised version of the business, with most of her work being digitallybased. But she still does the odd bit of handwritten work. “There’s not much call for it anymore. It’s mostly for people who want little house signs or little cottage garden signs. I’ve got two lettering brushes that I hardly ever use but I keep them pretty much perfect – you’ve got to really look after them. Dad had his favourite brushes; he didn’t like new ones because he liked the ones that he’d worn in,” she says. Julie’s workspace is now in the backyard of her 16-acre property just outside of Alexandra, which is fitting given her dad also spent a lot of time working at home “I can just remember him in the yard, he was always out signwriting. I’d go into his shed and he had lots of gold leaf and little boxes of interesting stuff. His workshop was like a little treasure trove,” she says. On the shelves in Julie’s own workshop there are photos of Cliff and some of his elaborately painted work vehicles.

One car Cliff was especially well-known for was a distinctive blue Cortina emblazoned with the business name and blue-and-orange decorative stripes. Julie’s workshop is also home to a large wooden bench that Cliff built. The benchtop is adjustable so that it can be raised or lowered to make the signwriter’s job easier – a feature Julie still takes advantage of when making signs, adding her own wear marks to those accumulated by her father’s use of the bench. In the latest Alexandra Signs workshop, it is clear that much has changed since Cliff started the business, and his signwriting stick propped up on the windowsill now symbolises a bygone era in the trade. But Julie is proud to carry on the work he started, providing signwriting services across the Murrindindi Shire. “It’s really his story, I’ve just taken it over and keep mucking around with it,” she says. ITEC Earthworks manager Clifford Brady and administration officer Hollie Marchetti. Clifford’s passion for landscaping started early, and he began working locally in garden maintenance at a young age. Hollie joined the team a few years ago to help keep up with increasing demand and says the company has kept growing steadily since then.

I

TEC Earthworks has come a long way since its humble beginnings doing site cleans and general construction earthworks after the 2009 fires. Today, with qualified landscapers on board, crew numbers in double digits and a network of other specialists at hand, ITEC Earthworks has evolved into a one-stop shop for all landscaping needs. ITEC manager Clifford Brady says they tailor their work to individual needs, taking into account the style of buildings and the nature of the site. The process of creating custom landscapes from scratch is challenging at times, but Clifford says it’s definitely worthwhile. “It’s rewarding. We’re not punching out ten units in a row where we’re just

We’re flexible with the clients, so nothing is set in concrete, and we can adjust as we go.” “Each project is unique to itself, and

what looks good on paper doesn’t necessarily work on-site,” adds administration officer Hollie Marchetti. Clifford says the ITEC team takes pride in all their projects and treats them equally, whether it’s a large-scale Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2022 – 19

Their journey to landscaping specialisation began on the ‘big’ side of things in 2014 with a complete landscape in Marysville, which subsequently delighted scores of Open Gardens visitors. Clifford holds this property in high regard, and eight years on, the ITEC team still visits regularly. “This job set the benchmark for me, and when we’d finished, I looked back and thought, ‘wow, we can make this happen’,” he says. That first landscaping success paved the way for many more residential projects, as well as commercial ones and those contributing to the local community. “We have had the absolute pleasure of undertaking multiple community projects, where ITEC has managed to engage and facilitate these works as our way of giving back to the community. The local RSL garden is a prime example of community kindness,” Clifford says. Recently, they added another feather to the company cap. After years dedicated to landscaping projects of all shapes and sizes, ITEC Earthworks is now a proud member of Victoria’s peak landscaping association, Landscaping Victoria Master Landscapers. 20 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2022

Over the years, they have also accrued a diversely-skilled, hard-working team and formed working relationships with designers and other professionals, allowing ITEC to provide comprehensive landscaping project management – “from blank canvas to completion and maintenance”. Supporting other local businesses has been a high priority in creating this network of specialists. “We’re really blessed working here because a lot of the tradies work together. So if we need a plumber or a concreter or a sparky on site, we can get someone local. We even have a plant consultant who can come in and select the plants for the gardens that we build,” Clifford says.

After completing many landscaping projects – big and small – ITEC Earthworks is now a proud member of Landscaping Victoria Master Landscapers.

Along with taking the headache out of organising other tradespeople or services, the ITEC Earthworks team strives to make clients’ landscaping experience easier and more enjoyable wherever possible. “We have a lot of Melbourne clients, and a lot of work goes on behind the scenes to keep them updated and notified of their jobs progression. I will send regular updates and images throughout the construction process to keep them informed on how the project is tracking. They seem to really appreciate that,” Hollie says. The combination of customer service and pride in their work appears to be doing the trick, and Clifford says their reputation and repeat business are both steadily growing. They’ve come a long way since their clean-up days and have successfully established themselves.

The ITEC team works alongside local garden designers for their more complex projects.

“The highest compliment for our company is getting return clientele. Return customers are the best satisfaction for us because we know we’ve done something right,” Clifford says. ITEC Earthworks is looking to expand their team in 2022 to keep up with high demand and a busy schedule. For more information on employment opportunities at ITEC Earthworks or their comprehensive landscaping services, you can go to www.itecearthworks.com, drop into their newly landscaped office at 42 Aitken Street, Alexandra, or phone 03 57721 000.

Peter Fisher in the Yarck Bikes workshop. Peter’s longstanding love of road racing and interest in bicycle mechanics have seen him and wife Jenny return to running a bike services business after a break of two decades.

by Emily Friedel

P

eter and Jenny Fisher were the Murrindindi Shire area’s go-to people for bicycle sales and repairs in the 90s. Back then, they owned Newtech Cycles in Alexandra. Now, after a couple of decades of doing other things, they are once again proprietors of the area’s sole bicycle business: Yarck Bikes. Regardless of what they have been up to business-wise, bikes have been a constant in Peter’s and Jenny’s lives for a long time. Jenny’s dad convinced Peter to have a crack at road racing in the mid-80s, which led to him competing in state and national events. As he racked up the kilometres, Peter’s interest in bikes and ability to work with them grew. “I took it seriously for a while and rode at a pretty high level. I took a coach on and kept a diary for a couple of years, and I was averaging something like 35,000 k’s a year racing and training,” he says.

“Once you start getting heavily into competition, it’s all about maintaining your own gear. And I’ve got a bit of a mechanical background, so there was no problem in seeing how things ticked.” Jenny, on the other hand, opted to ride bikes for pleasure and be part of the support crew, keeping Peter and his teammates well looked after – “It was lots of fun,” she says. Peter also spent a couple of seasons working as a bicycle mechanic for the Sportscover pro-team and rubbed shoulders with some of the big names in cycling. “We had the likes of Barcelona Olympian Robert Crowe on the team. I got to meet Olympian and Commonwealth Games champion Kathy Watt too; she signed [a] poster for me. Mechanicing and supporting a team with some pretty decent riders was probably a bit of a wish come true,” he says. Peter’s love of racing and talent for mechanics, along with the obvious

market gap for bike services in the area, led to the Fishers opening Newtech Cycles in 1993. Almost a quarter of a century later, similar factors led to the opening of Yarck Bikes in January last year. Although Peter doesn’t race anymore, he still rides for fun and thoroughly enjoys tinkering with bikes. After Newtech closed, no one else filled the bicycle market gap. So Peter and Jenny have again taken that niche with Yarck Bikes, offering repairs, sales, and custom bike builds. And despite the extended break, there has been some continuity in their bike work. “We’ve even serviced some of the bikes we sold 24-odd years ago. People have come back saying, ‘We bought our first bike from you!’” Jenny says. While some things haven’t changed since their Newtech days, bike technology has - dramatically. In particular, the advent of e-bikes (electric bikes) has revolutionised how bicycle Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2022 – 23

Yarck bikes has a range of bicycles, e-bikes, and bicycle accessories available as well as hire bikes. And if they don’t have what you’re after, they’ll try to get it in. I haven’t been converted yet, but I’m sure at some stage I’ll have some sort of motor under me,” Peter adds. Another significant change since their Newtech days is the rail trail. Peter and Jenny had hoped for a rail trail to be built, but it failed to launch in the 90s. So they’re now thrilled that the rail trail was finally constructed and that they’ve been able to open Yarck Bikes conveniently close by. “The rail trail’s more popular now than ever. We get families coming in, couples, people riding from Melbourne to Wangaratta – people like that who use the trail as the go-between,” Peter says.

mechanics like Peter approach their trade. “Technology in the bike industry has changed massively. With the electric motors they put in bikes now, you can treat certain bikes with certain motors the same as you would a car; you can plug them into a computer and do a diagnostic on them,” he says. For Jenny, hopping on an e-bike has put the pleasure back into bike riding. “I absolutely love it. I can go for a long 24 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2022

time – uphill, downhill – and it doesn’t hurt; it makes it enjoyable. You still get your exercise because you don’t have to use the motor all the time or the high speed all the time. So you can still get your heart pumping, but it doesn’t hurt. I could never ride with Peter on a normal bike because I couldn’t keep up with him, but we can do it together now, which is really good,” she says. “People will tell you the e-bikes open up a whole new world for them – they will ride for hours instead of minutes.

Anyone who’s up for a ride along the rail trail and needs a bike can drop into Yarck Bikes to hire one. For an easy ride, there are plenty of e-bikes available in addition to regular bicycles. Peter and Jenny can even provide a bike drop-off or pick-up service along the rail trail for those who want to ride one way. There is also the advantage of being able to test drive bikes (or e-bikes) on the rail trail before purchasing. “If you’re going to spend the money on a bike, you really want to try it before you buy it,” Jenny says. Having Yarck Bikes so near the rail trail also means that cyclists who run into

trouble while riding along it can call on Peter and Jenny for a helping hand. “We offer a rail trail rescue service, where if you’re broken down, we’ll come and help you out. That’s been popular. We had a young family come in who went from Tallarook to Mansfield, which took them four days. The youngest one was five. They called in because a chain broke,” Peter says. “We got their little girl’s bike fixed, and off they went again. It was really good to help them on their way,” Jenny adds. Along with tourists requiring assistance as they pass through, locals have been grateful they no longer have to drive to places like Lilydale or Seymour for their bike needs. Wherever they’re from, though, Yarck Bikes’ customers have demonstrated there is much demand for all things bicycle-related in the Murrindindi Shire area. In fact, demand has been so high that what was supposed to be a part-time, easing into retirement business has turned into a seven-day-a-week operation. “It’s gone from a ‘change in lifestyle’ to fulltime, as well as running our other business,” Peter says with a laugh. Peter doesn’t seem to mind, though, and relishes the challenge of having to adapt to new technologies. “It’s been very enjoyable keeping up with the changes. Keeps things interesting. For example, we’ve gone

A blast from the past: the Fishers’ Alexandra bike shop in the 90s. from using cables to change gears to using all Bluetooth – that lever that used to be a cable changer is now rigid and just a lot of buttons. It’s a totally different world to ride in,” Peter says. Despite the inevitable changes that have happened over the 21-year break from their bicycle business, it appears that Peter and Jenny haven’t had any

trouble keeping up to speed with the industry. And with their comeback, they’ve reclaimed their No. 1 spot as Murrindindi Shire’s go-to business for bike needs. “It’s a big full circle,” Peter says. For more information on Yarck Bikes go to yarck-bikes.business.site or call 0409 192 066

ver the last few months, there have been many changes and a number of exciting new developments underway at the Yea Wetlands. The Discovery Centre has a new name and is now known as the Yea Wetlands Discovery Centre. Don Knight, Yea Wetlands Discovery Centre Inc Chairperson said, “We felt the timing was right to rebrand the Centre to better align with the Yea Wetlands. The new name reflects the location and the experiences and activities on offer in both the Centre and the Wetlands.” Along with the new signage, there is now a brand-new website showcasing both the Centre and the Wetlands. Work is also underway to develop a visitor guide and update the directional and interpretive signage in the Wetlands.

Above: Gurrong dharrang, Scarred Tree, and new signage at the Yea Wetlands Discovery Centre Below: Yea Wetlands Walk Scarred Tree, artwork by Taungurung artist Sammy Trist. Located at the entrance to the Centre, the sculpture of a eucalyptus tree features Indigenous line art and the Taungurung totems, Bundjil the wedge-tailed eagle and Waang the crow. This project was coordinated by the Honour the Taungurung Yea community group, including Taungurung Elder Aunty Angela ten Buuren, with funding from the Victorian Government’s COVID-19 Aboriginal Community Response and Recovery Fund.

Mr Knight said, “The website, visitor guide and new signage in the Wetlands will be a fantastic resource for visitors and locals alike to discover the many great things to see, do and explore in the area and will assist our team of over 40 local volunteers to continue to offer outstanding visitor information services.”

Works were also recently completed on rejuvenating the Yea Fossil Time Path, which winds alongside the Yea Wetlands Discovery Centre and tells the story of this land’s geographical history, including the Yea Baragwanathia Fossil. Interpretive signage and an audio listening post will be installed over the coming months.

Another impressive new development at the Yea Wetlands Discovery Centre is the recent installation of the Gurrong dharrang,

A new interactive display has recently been installed in the Russel Wealands Interpretive Wing and provides a fascinating insight into

hen you are outdoors walking or cycling in the Murrindindi Shire, you may well hear a strange rasping, churring, “gzzerrt, gzzerrt” sound coming from the trees. This is the call of the restless flycatcher. Its call is so distinctive that it has been named the scissor grinder

bird because it reminds people of the sound made when sharpening scissors on a grinding stone. It’s thought the birds use this jarring sound to flush out insects so that they can make a meal of them. However, just to confuse the issue, restless flycatchers also have another totally different call: a high, clear “too-ee, too-ee” note that you may also hear echoing through the bush. Restless flycatchers are generally found in open woodland or around farmland with remnant trees. They are comfortable being near humans and have been known to search for insects under eaves and verandahs and even in farm buildings. Although they are called flycatchers, their diet actually extends to beetles, moths, spiders and centipedes.

These birds can often be seen perched on stumps or fence posts, as well as on the branches of trees, constantly swishing their tails from side to side. From these vantage points, they hawk for food. This involves swooping out, catching their prey mid-flight, and

then returning to their perch to try again. Hovering is another method they use to hunt. They suspend themselves vertically in the air, wings quivering rapidly while plucking unsuspecting insects from the outer foliage of trees and shrubs. With their constant, jittery movement, the epithet “restless” appears well deserved for these birds. The restless flycatcher is a medium-sized bird with a blue-back head, back and tail, and white underparts that extend from the base of the tail to the base of the beak. It has a small crest on the top of its head, which it can raise and lower. Males and females are similar in appearance. Restless flycatchers are very Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2022 – 29

However, the willie wagtail is actually from a family of birds known as the fantails because, as the name suggests, they open and close their tail feathers rather like a fan when flitting around looking for insects. You can easily pick a willy 30 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2022

wagtail from a restless flycatcher because the white on the willy’s belly doesn’t extend right up to their beak. Instead, they have a black bib underneath their chin. They also have a white eyebrow and lack the crest of the flycatcher. The calls, too, are different. The restless flycatcher breeding season runs from

July to January in southern Australia. During this time, restless flycatchers build a small, cup-shaped nest made of bark and grass bound together with spiders’ webs and often decorated with lichen. They place this nest on a tree branch and have been known to build in the same location every year. Both sexes help build the

The restless flycatcher can be found throughout Victoria, NSW and QLD (below Cairns), southern SA and south-western WA. It is one of six species of flycatchers occurring in Australia. Two of these species – the leaden flycatcher and the satin flycatcher – also occur in the Murrindindi Shire, but they are seasonal migrants, heading north for the winter and returning to the district in spring and summer. While the restless flycatcher has some seasonal movements, they are less pronounced than the other two species. The habitats are similar for all species, although the satin flycatcher is more likely to be found in cooler, wetter environments. Both the leaden and satin flycatchers are very similar in appearance. The males have a dark back and hood extending down to their breast and a white belly. In the case of the satin flycatcher, the back and

head are a glossy blue-black, whereas the leaden flycatcher’s colouring is more of a dark bluegrey. The females are even more difficult to tell apart, with both species having a lead-grey head and back, a rufous throat and chest and a white underbelly. There are subtle differences between the species, but the casual observer would struggle to pick them out. Like the restless flycatcher, the satin and leaden flycatchers have a variety of calls that range from harsh, buzzing sounds to more melodic notes. While the conservation status of all three locallyoccurring species is listed as “secure”, there is still concern that the pressures of climate change, land clearing and firewood collection may negatively impact these birds in the future. lanting trees back into cleared land can transform landscapes, bringing benefits to both landholders and the environment. However, successful tree growing involves much more than just plonking some native seedlings in the ground. So this autumn, the Spring Creek Home Creek Landcare group and Murrindindi Climate Network are bringing the Australian Agroforestry Foundation’s Master TreeGrower program to the Murrindindi Shire. The eight-day course will run over six weekends between March 12 and May 8 and aims to equip participants with the knowledge to attain their personal tree-growing goals. Rowan Reid, who developed the course and first ran it in 1996, says it’s all about working with landholders rather than telling them what they should be doing. “The course does not promote any particular tree species or type of growing or purpose of growing. All we’re trying to do is provide education, guidance, and network support for landholders who want to grow trees to

achieve whatever objectives they have,” Rowan says.

condition. They want to make it a more attractive place to live.”

“On the first day of the course, I do an exercise to explore what farmers’ motivations might be and, invariably, landholders have four particular things that they might be interested in. The first is the conservation benefits of trees, which we’re all very aware of because of the success of Landcare. Then there are the shelter and agricultural benefits of trees, which are particularly important now with increasing concerns about climate change and bushfires. The role of trees in ameliorating some of those risks is really important.

The program will include sessions run by different experts and industry leaders, covering topics such as the role of trees on farms, plantation management, and growing for the market. Participants will also visit local tree farms and some in the Otways, including Rowan’s farm in Bambra.

“And then there are the potential products. This is new to a lot of landholders, we show them what the products might be, which could be timber or native food production or seeds or flowers or oils, or whatever might be of potential interest within that particular area. And the final one, which is sort of the most interesting one for me, is the aesthetics. Landholders want to improve the property and pass it on to the next generation in better

“We’ve got 50 or so different species, mostly grown for specialty timbers. We grow timbers that might take 60 to 80 years to grow, and we grow stuff that’s obviously a lot faster. We also graze sheep on the property. I’m very interested in the aesthetics too. And now we’re milling and drying our own timber, which is a great learning experience – we’re building a house with it and selling some to furniture makers,” Rowan says of his property. “I’m interested in showing how exciting forestry is. There are thousands of different species, and you can grow them in different ways. You don’t have to follow conventional forestry – you can do whatever you like,” he adds. Below: Rita at the Thornton tree farm in 2008, two years after the above photo was taken. Photos courtesy Rita Seethaler and Tony Richardson.

Rita Seethaler, who is coordinating this autumn’s local Master TreeGrower program, was certainly inspired by the possibilities when she completed the program in 2005. She and her husband, Tony Richardson, went on to establish two tree farms. Rita says they learned a great deal through the handson aspects of the program. “Between 50 metres or so the conditions may be completely different in terms of soil composition, geology, inclination, orientation (is it north-facing, is it south-facing, etc.) and climatic conditions like rainfall, radiation etc. and hence you need to work with different species. So you can’t just say, ‘Sydney blue gum will do me.’ You really need to learn which species is suitable for which location, and you need to learn where to get specialist help,” she says. “You learn how to integrate a tree farm in your whole farm plan. You can organise your farm trees as a rotational crop that you eventually harvest in a clever way together with revegetation that you don’t harvest, which has a really important role in your farm as well. Your revegetation can really be helpful for erosion control, and it has biodiversity value, especially the understory. Furthermore, it is critical to keep all the remnant paddock trees and organize your farm forestry around them. There are lots of positive spillover effects. If you do it the right way, you can have lots of different pursuits on your farm and they all mutually enhance each other. That’s when ecology and economics are not pitched against each other.” Rita says she and Tony were motivated to undertake the program primarily because they felt that it would be good for carbon sequestration, creating more tree cover, and as contributor to their self-managed superannuation fund. However, there are many additional reasons people may want to learn how to grow trees. “Others who came to the course were longstanding farmers – for example, beef production – but who had never worked with farm trees. We had some who had put in trees, but it was a failure because they didn’t know about proper silviculture and maintenance of their tree farm, so they came to find out what had gone wrong. Then there were tree-changers who had bought some land, but the land was bare – just a

There were also young people who were already working in ag services and thought maybe there was some work in it for them. It’s really very varied who it is interesting for,” Rita says. Rowan says the course encourages collaborative learning, with participants contributing their knowledge and experience rather than just being passive recipients of the information. Participant interactions and the communities of farm foresters that develop from Master TreeGrower programs can lead to long-term, widespread change. “In our area in the Otways, what we’ll be showing the participants is that as a community, we have a peer mentoring service that came out of our Master

TreeGrower programs, and we actually use public money to pay farmers to talk to other farmers about their tree-growing activities and provide mentoring over time. We’re very proud, you drive through our community and hundreds of farmers plant trees for many different reasons and the landscape has changed.” In a region like the Murrindindi Shire and the Upper Goulburn catchment where land has been extensively cleared since settler arrivals, Rowan says that giving landholders the confidence to grow trees and enabling them to support one another can have a transformative effect. “We’ve been running this program now for 25 years, and where it has been successful it’s quite a different landscape D OF EKEN A WE FOR THE FUN MILY FA

mentality in terms of tree growing to areas where they continue to have big grant programs and government run conservation and timber-production initiatives and nothing really takes off. That’s my view, and that’s why I continue to be enthusiastic about the approach we take,” he says. “The impact can be dramatic.” This autumn’s Master TreeGrower project is supported by the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program and the Murrindindi Shire. ngus industry trailblazer Ian Bates of Riddellvue Angus will offer up the first Australian sons of a US bull by the same name this autumn. The Alexandra based stud has had renewed vigour and focus in recent years, with Mr Bates travelling far and wide to find the right genetic lines to introduce to the stud – and the Australian beef industry. Riddellvue Angus’ second autumn bull sale will be held on-property Wednesday 9 March, with 34 lots catalogued, and Mr Bates said 15 were suitable to put over heifers. It will be one of the first chances Australian producers have to secure sons by two leading US sires in Mogck Entice and Ferguson Trailblazer. The catalogue includes five Mogck Entice sons, a bull which came highly

recommended to Mr Bates by HCH Genetics and has American figures in the top 1 per cent for growth and docility. “He carries a fairly complete dataset but he’s also holding a good body, good bone structure and I think he’s going to make good future sires,” Mr Bates says. “A lot of other studs are now looking for semen from Entice, and our lots to be offered are an interesting, well put together line of bulls.” Ferguson Trailblazer ranks in the top 10 per cent of Expected Progeny Difference (EPD, the US version of ASBVs) for growth, docility, pregnancy rates, maternal calving ease, carcass weight and marbling. Mr Bates concentrates on US genetics from North and South Dakota, as he “knows they handle the climate well”, making sire selection more challenging

“I don’t get hung up on numbers, I don’t like to focus on them, I am more about structural correctness and the animal being phenotypically right,” he says. “But they (Entice and Trailblazer) are bulls that have been introduced that I think are capable of holding themselves – a lot of bulls don’t have enough strength.” The Riddellvue autumn sale will also offer twin bull calves by the $50,000 Milwillah Napa N498, out of a Premier Angus cow Mr Bates purchased at that stud’s dispersal in 2020. Having managed the well revered Anvil Angus stud down the road at Acheron from 2013 until its dispersal in 2018, Mr Bates was inspired to reinvigorate his own Riddellvue Angus stud, initially established by his parents in the 1970s.

has coincided with good seasons and a record cattle market, and Mr Bates said he’s keen to put his own stamp on the Angus breed in such a thriving environment. “I haven’t heard anyone have any bad vibes about the industry lately, I think there is a lot of strength in it for the next 12 months at least, and I can’t see it coming back too far in the near future,” he says.

value for money, especially the way the climate is with the beef industry,” Mr Bates says. “The last sale averaged just over $9000, it was still a cheap sale relative to other offerings, but a very good result for us.

In the spring of 2021, Riddellvue achieved a total clearance of 28 bulls to an average of $9071 – a climb of nearly $2000 from their previous on-property offering – and a top of $15,000, which was a record high for the stud. “The demand has been very good, a lot clients stayed with me from Anvil, and they know they are getting great

“I like to focus on what I do well and I don’t like to veer too much – I’m very focused on keeping the cattle right and correct with great feet, that’s what I focus on all the time.” This next phase of Riddellvue Angus

“Our clients have sold cattle at the annual January Yea weaner sales recently with very good results – the cattle I was breeding at Anvil went very well on feed, and now the buyers are following Riddellvue genetics because they know they will perform.” Riddellvue opened its gates for clients in January for Beef Week, and will host its second annual autumn bull sale on Wednesday 9 March, on-property near Alexandra at 1pm and online via Auctions Plus. T

he Lake Eildon Fishing Challenge once again returns to Lake Eildon with fishing beginning from 2pm on Friday 13 May with presentations beginning midday on Sunday 15 May. The annual community based fishing competition raises much needed funds for Variety, The Children’s Charity, and has been running since 2017. Held on Victoria’s premier inland fishery Lake Eildon and surrounds, anglers have the freedom to bait or lure fish non-stop for the two full days and nights of the competition. Whilst the 2022 event will inevitably be run under a COVID Safety Plan it’s still going to be a fun, action packed weekend. Details of the event can be obtained via their website lakeeildonfishingchallenge.com or Facebook page Lake Eildon Fishing Challenge. There is an early bird registration prize if you register for the competition prior to 15 April. The competition is open to bait and

or lure angling with or without a boat. The prize categories for the longest fish captured and released include Murray cod, yellowbelly, brown trout, and rainbow trout. There are also junior prize categories to be won for the up and coming junior anglers. Over past events the off lake entertainment has been well received by competitors. Friday evening a safety and fishing brief will be conducted at the 501 Café located at 501 Jerusalem Creek Road, Eildon by Bob Hazler – the founder of the Lake Eildon Fishing Facebook Page has been instrumental in providing the pre competition safety briefings – alongside Peter Burtchell the local fishing guide.

today!

Saturday evening will see the annual auction in full swing and midday Sunday presentations will once again be hosted by Bill Classon and Mick Caufield from Freshwater Fishing.

Competitors in the 2021 event listened intently at the Friday evening’s briefing provided by Archie Clarke, the event’s junior ambassador, as he delivered his fishing report which provided a headsup for anglers about where the most fish were likely to be caught.

Unfortunately this year Archie will be on his long awaited trip around Australia but we are sure that the organising committee will find a replacement junior or senior that will have just as many fishing skills that saw Archie’s predictions of where the fish would be caught come to fruition for the 2022 competition.

D

r Liz Kirby graduated with a PhD through the University of Sydney’s Business School at the age of 93 in 2014. She turned 100 last year. Then in 2019, Dr David Bottomley took the title of Australia’s oldest PhD graduate at 94 years old. These two nonagenarians showed that it’s never too late when it comes to education. And by engaging in academic challenges despite advanced age, they may have provided their brains with some protection against the ravages of time. In 1997, epidemiologist David Snowden published a case study describing the brain of a dead 101-year-old nun, Sister Mary of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in America. Sister Mary’s brain bore extensive hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease: neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques. This is not a surprising find in the brain of a woman who lived for more than a century. What is surprising is that Sister Mary’s cognitive function test scores were high right up until her death. That is, despite having a brain that looked in pretty bad shape, Sister Mary was still sharp. Sister Mary was one of 678 nuns who participated in The Nun Study, a longitudinal study that spanned 25 years and is now being revived by a new team of researchers. The nuns of

the School Sisters of Notre Dame were chosen for the study because of their generally long lifespans and lower rates of dementia. Sister Mary exemplified these qualities. Snowden suggested that her intellectually active lifestyle allowed her to enter old age with superior cognitive abilities, buffering the damage done by tangles and plaques. Sister Mary retired as a schoolteacher at 87, but she continued to deliver lessons to other nuns in the convent until she passed away. Snowden held her up as an inspiring example, saying, “cognitive impairment is not an inevitable consequence of aging and disease”. A growing body of evidence supports the idea that leading an intellectually challenging life may allow us to hold onto mental acuity through old age. Regularly putting on the old thinking cap as we grow older may keep the brain ‘fit’, just as regular exercise does for the body. A 2015 review published in BMJ Open found that continuing formal education (or leisure activities mimicking formal education) was associated with improved cognitive function and lower incidence of dementia in adults 45 years or older. The underlying mechanism of this association may be the enhanced cognitive reserve built up through mature-aged learning. Cognitive reserve is the brain’s ability to improvise and find an alternative method of getting a

task done. And an Australian study has found a causal link between education and cognitive reserve in older adults. In 2016, the Tasmanian Healthy Brain Project reported some intriguing findings in Neuropsychology. Their research demonstrated that going to university significantly increased cognitive reserves in healthy adults between 50 and 79 years old. Perhaps, as Snowden suggested, Sister Mary’s mental acuity was so well preserved despite her brain lesions because she had kept her brain active throughout her long life, building up her cognitive reserves. Perhaps Dr Kirby and Dr Bottomley were able to complete their doctorates at such an old age because they had built up their cognitive reserves – both have described living lives that could be characterised as intellectually stimulating. At the very least, it is likely that being (extremely) mature-aged students gave their cognitive reserves a good boost. Dr Kirby and Dr Bottomley serve as exemplars of people who didn’t let age get in the way of their education. And while they show so strikingly that it’s never too late, research suggests that we should reframe our views on education. Maybe ‘the later, the better’ is more apt if you’re to reap the anti-aging benefits of learning.

Renowned artist Ron Muller at work in his Acheron studio. by Carol Hopkins

R

on Muller, a renowned artist living in Acheron, has had an extremely eclectic career. He has reinvented himself at least four times, and his career switches have been so disparate and dramatic that he jokingly says his wife, Maree, has been married to four men! While the current version of Ron – an accomplished watercolour and landscape

artist – has been around for over 30 years, his journey to this career has had plenty of twists and turns. Ron began his working life about as far away from the art world as you can get with an apprenticeship in the General Motors Holden factory at Fisherman’s Bend. Ron was encouraged into this area by his father, who placed a high value on having a trade. Ron excelled at his work and

was supported by the company to study a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at Caulfield Institute of Technology. But his heart wasn’t in it. “I wasn’t all that fussed with engineering,” he admits. Part way through Ron’s studies, the American evangelist Billy Graham arrived in Australia to conduct his Crusades. Inspired by Billy Graham’s message, Ron decided to

become a Baptist minister. After four years of study at Whitley University College, he was assigned to two churches in Malvern. This was in the 1960s, a time of immense social change, and Ron’s enthusiastic engagement with the social issues of the time earned him a reputation as a bit of a radical. His progressive ideas, particularly for selling one of the churches to establish a social support and counselling centre, were not Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2022 – 53

well received by the church. Eventually, disillusioned by the church’s conservatism, Ron left the ministry. At first, Ron was at a bit of a loss as to what to do next. However, luck was on his side, and he was soon offered a job in the personnel department of the then Country Roads Board. Ron again took to this new role with gusto and rose rapidly through the ranks, eventually becoming a personnel manager. Along with recruitment and training, Ron was also heavily involved in industrial relations, but the ongoing stress involved in this role took its toll on his general health. In the end, his doctors told him he needed to quit. And so began his fourth incarnation, this time as an artist. This career move wasn’t as surprising as it might seem. As Ron explains, “Art had

54 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2022

always been a silent interest of mine. It began when I was a kid. I always had a facility to draw. It was something that was latent and that I came back to.” Ron began to take lessons once a week with renowned watercolour artist C. Dudley Wood. These lessons ignited his passion for art. At the same time, Ron was reading extensively about the poets and artists of the Romantic tradition, who favoured intuition, emotion and imagination, rather than reason and science, as a means of viewing and interpreting the world. The Romantics were also captivated by the beauty of the natural world, particularly the play of light in the landscape. All these ideas, coupled with a love of the outdoors, resonated with Ron and set him on a course to become a celebrated landscape artist with sell-out exhibitions.

In explaining his style, Ron says he is an interpreter, not a reporter, of visual information. “I don’t take a subject as it is. I use my imagination to reinterpret a subject, and that finally comes down to my response to it. It might be something in the light and the atmosphere of the subject. It might also be nostalgia. It’s an emotional response.” Capturing the effect of early morning and late afternoon light on the landscape is a hallmark of Ron’s work, whether he is painting scenes from Australia or Europe. For this reason, he only works in watercolour because its fluidity and transparency are ideally suited for representing the subtle shifts he observes. With many of his paintings, Ron says his aim is “to depict a subject so that the eye is taken through the painting, in and off and beyond”. He says he wants to create something that draws the viewer in emotionally and makes them think it would be wonderful to just wander off through the depicted scene. In addition to painting, Ron has been heavily involved in teaching art. He taught watercolour classes at the Doncaster Templestowe Art Society for 25 years and has

run workshops throughout Australia and overseas. His workshops in Tuscany, Italy, were an outstanding success, as were those in the south of France. Now, he runs weekly watercolour classes in Taggerty for Murrindindi East U3A. He has also been a judge at many Rotary Art Shows. While Ron used to exhibit his paintings in several major galleries, he notes with sadness that many of those galleries have now closed. The burgeoning online art market appears to have taken their place, but Ron doesn’t have the interest to pursue this outlet for his paintings. Nevertheless, Ron continues to produce his iconic works.

ooks at Yarck opened in July 2011, and is now an established landmark in the expanding Yarck village. The objective of the operators Catherine Wherry and Jeremy Morrison is to provide a comprehensive selection of largely non technical reading that is affordable and easy to access. Some categories are covered in depth including military, crime fiction and biography, as well as older books and classics. As a service to regular customers Catherine will do her best to provide information about wanted books, and track them down if possible. For lighter and general fiction Catherine has enjoyed books by Mary Wesley and Alexander McCall Smith. One of our most popular sections covers early and more recent polar exploration. We regularly carry stock on such well known figures as Scott, Shackleton and Mawson. Currently on the shelves is a selection on a virtually unknown Australian, George Hubert Wilkins, perhaps our greatest adventurer and explorer. The popular and well read writer Peter FitzSimons in his most recent book The Incredible life of Hubert Wilkins will no doubt bring to the wider public Wilkins’ incredible exploits and achievements. Wilkins was born in 1888 in the tiny hamlet of East Bryant in the Mount Lofty region of South Australia. FitzSimons writes in a very popular style, and as he freely admits his work relies on a large research staff, and the works

man he saw on the Western Front.

of previous authors. Nevertheless it is his strength that he brings to life and to a new generation people and events that deserve a far greater recognition than currently in vogue. Wilkins, apart from his exploration activities, was an early thinker on the impact of the polar regions on the weather and environment that deserves our recognition. Hubert Wilkins’ exploits still amaze – from his early life as a travelling picture show exhibitor, to forays into Arctic exploration in conjunction with the legendary Norwegian explorer Steffson. In the 1914-18 war, in conjunction with Frank Hurley he was an official war photographer. For courage as acting as a stretcher bearer on occasions, he was awarded the MC with bar, and whom John Monash described as the bravest

Early Arctic and later aerial flights over both Arctic and Antarctica , including being the first to fly over the North Pole, were achieved although he never held a pilot’s licence . Perhaps his most audacious, was his attempt to sail a US World War One submarine under the North Pole. Wilkins Sound, the large area in Antarctica is also named in his honour. In later life Wilkins undertook research expeditions into Far North and West Queensland. The list goes on and almost leaves one breathless as to his many close shaves and near death experiences. Books at Yarck is designed to avoid the normal second hand bookshop clutter and customers are encouraged to browse at their leisure, and young children and families are particularly welcome. ow! Who would have thought we’d still be riding the ‘Corona Coaster’? Such is life as we know it these days, eh! At least we’ve been able to open. What a treat to re-connect with my community and customers. I’d been missing my little store and all the beautiful connections that come with supporting such a diverse range of artists and artisans – for over 10 years now.

Once again, we will team up with one or more of our suppliers on long weekends (and school holidays), showcasing their wares with a ‘Meet the Maker’. Look forward to seeing you soon! See our ad in this edition for further information. And as we said in previous issues, we are still under no illusion that life will be going totally back to ‘normal’ any time soon. So best to check ahead of your visit to ensure events are going ahead, and to confirm opening times - currently subject to change.
