By Emily Friedel DID YOU know that a drop of pure water can unlock the subtle flavours trapped in whisky after years of ageing in oak barrels? Or that Tassie produces some of the world’s best whisky? Or that whisky distilled by the beach takes on a distinctive salty flavour? These are just a few of the things you might learn when visiting Killingworth Hill Café and Whisky Bar. Upon arriving at Killingworth Hill, you are greeted by hosts Garry and Lesley and given a homemade savoury biscuit to munch on while you wander around inside and check out the incredible collection of Australiana adorning the café. As you walk through the Australian farm shed style building, with its open timber trusses, you see things like antique tennis rackets, old mirrors placed carefully so that you get an interesting view from any angle, rows of collectable whisky jugs, and pieces of rusty equipment that were used in shearing sheds and stables in a bygone era. In the centre of a dining area, there is a very early model of telephone box, with vintage books and a crystallised merino ram’s skull from a Kerang salt pan displayed inside. “The telephone box is Australian, not British, and it’s complete – everything that’s usable is in there; it’s even got the instructions,” Lesley says. The vast array of relics that give the café its warm, old-fashioned feel are the result of 45 years worth of collecting. “I didn’t like to see all of our history and memorabilia getting thrown in the tip. Everybody who comes in and looks at those old kettles up there above the door, the old electric jugs, says, ‘My grandmother used to use one just like that’. And where are they now? In the tip,” Garry says. Once you’ve taken in the museum aspect of the café, you can sit down and browse the menu, which offers various drinks – whisky, wine, gin, cocktails, and Lesley’s homemade lemon squash – and charcuterie boards. “We grow a lot of our own produce, so it’s all natural and organic. We’ve got lots of different fruit trees and veggies and herbs, so it’s all fresh ingredients that I use to cook with,” says Lesley, who is also the resident chef. Of course, a large section of the menu is dedicated to whisky. There are around 180 whisky varieties on offer, and for anyone interested in the Australian whisky scene, Killingworth Hill is the place to be. “We’ve got a bottle from just about every Australian distillery that we know of,” Garry says.
Killingworth Hill offers both indoor and outdoor areas – on a sunny day, it’s lovely to sit outside surrounded by greenery, including some of the fruit trees that provide ingredients for Lesley in the kitchen. Just like the curiosities that line the walls of the café, each bottle of whisky has its story. There are bottles from small backyard distilleries, like Black Gate in outback New South Wales, to the award-winning stuff made by the godfather of Australian whisky, Bill Lark of Tasmania. There is even Killingworth Hill’s own whisky, distilled and aged in port barrels in Tassie at Redlands Distillery. If you’re a whisky aficionado, it’s just a matter of choosing your favourite. If you’re among the uninitiated, don’t worry, Garry and Lesley are more than happy to help you find something you like. “We’ll convert you,” Garry says with a smile and twinkle in his eye. For the newbie, the Australian or imported tastings are recommended, which each give you four wee drams of different whiskies (a total of only about half a shot for each tasting, so you shouldn’t have the wobbly boots on even if you try both). The 4ml drams are served in tiny antique glasses salvaged from op shops and come with ice and pure water. Your friendly hosts will take you through the tasting process so you can get the most out of each glass. “Because the whisky sits in the barrel for six to eight years, it
absorbs the flavours out of the oak or the sherry, port, or bourbon (or in the case of Starward, red wine). By Emily Friedel FROM THE forests of Toolangi to the red earth of the Pilbara, Australia has left a lasting impression on Kara Lauder and her western boots. The idea for Kader Boot Co. struck Kara when she noticed a distinct gap in the market for Australian-owned western boot brands. “I’ve always loved western boots, and I could never find exactly what I had in my head that I’d love to wear. It was just something that wasn’t available in Australia from an Australian-owned company; there weren’t many people that were actually doing it. There were some western-wear
companies, but not really the boots, so I thought I’d give it a shot,” Kara says. Kara was working as an environmental officer for a mining company in Western Australia at the time and was thinking ahead to what she might do when she had kids as she didn’t want to work ‘fly-in fly-out’ with a family at home. Her job in the mining industry also provided fodder for her creativity, inspiring a boot design that’s a favourite among Kader Boot Co.’s customers. “The ant design was done back when I was an enviro officer and used to spend a lot of time out in the bush where giant termite mounds are common. I just thought
ants might be kind of cool on boots. It’s something different, and they’re a pretty popular design of ours now – I called it Karijini after Karijini National Park, just as a bit of a hint to the Pilbara I guess.” While her home in the Western Australian outback, where she lives with her husband and two young children, provides creative fuel for Kara, her Toolangi roots still run deep. “I’ll always be a country girl from the mountains in Vic, no matter where I live now,” she says. And Kara is predicting that a Toolangi-inspired design to be released this year is going to surpass the popularity of any of her other boots so far. “I’m going to have feathers on the side of boots, and that’s from growing up in Victoria and birds that we’ve seen there – they’re going to look amazing.” One of Toolangi’s birds has especially captured Kara’s imagination, likely because it captured her father’s imagination first. “My father was the senior forest ranger out in Murrindindi and Toolangi State Forest for over 20 years, so we spent a lot of time going out and looking at birds. He did a bit of bird research on owls in particular, he loved owls, so there was a lot of influence on us, his kids. There was one owl that he absolutely loved, the powerful owl. We hid in hides out in the bush, and we’d watch these owls for hours, and he’d take a lot of photos of them.”

Along with their unique Australian designs, Kara says that being handmade from the highest quality leather available makes Kader boots stand out. After finding that getting her boots
made in Australia would be prohibitively expensive, Kara tracked down a family-run manufacturer in Mexico. “The manufacturer we’re going through has been doing western boots for a very, very long time – for generation after generation – and they really know what they’re doing. They make some wonderful quality boots.” Kara also appreciates their manufacturer’s willingness to work with her to get the boots just right, even at the beginning of Kader Boot Co. when she had only the most rudimentary tools to create her designs. “It started off very, very simple – actually just making them out of paper, I would draw them up, cut them out and wrap them around boots that I already had. That’s how I used to do it, and I’d send photos of that to my manufacturer, and they would be able to make them from that. But it took a lot longer because it wasn’t the most professional way of doing it, whereas now it’s a little bit quicker because I know what I’m doing now after all these years. I was very lucky to find a manufacturer with a lot of patience, because it took a lot of phone calls, a lot of emails, and Skype to try to get across ‘these are ants, I actually want ants on boots’, and they thought I was crazy.” It can take up to 18 months to see the design process through to wearable pair of boots. The effort is paying off, and it seems that anyone who slides their foot into a Kader boot is instantly impressed – from Hollywood stunt riders to average Joes who are just looking for a really comfy pair of boots.
The very popular ants design, ‘Karijini’, that Kara came up with when she was working in the Pilbara as an environmental officer for a mining company. “There’s the CEO of a company in America, she owns Neon Cowboys (they make a light-up cowboy hat) and we just did a collaboration deal where I’d get one of her hats and do a photo shoot in the outback, and she got a pair of my boots and did the photo shoot over there. She now loves my boots so much that
they’re her favourite pair of shoes and wears them just about every day. “We’ve also had American travellers buy our boots in Paraburdoo; they like them compared to what they can get over there, so that has been really good to hear.” Americans taking Kader boots back home is a reversal
of the western boot trend in Australia, and shows the power of a bit of Aussie determination combined with the remarkable beauty of our environment. “Our designs are Australianinfluenced compared with nearly everything else that’s out there on the Australian market that’s imported
from America, they’re these foreign brands and there’s no story behind them, they’re just boot designs. By Emily Friedel LONG-NOSED BANDICOOTS are making a comeback around Kinglake West after bushfires devastated the area in 2009. Monitoring by Upper Goulburn Landcare Network (UGLN) using motion-activated cameras in the area has shown local populations of these little marsupials are on the rise. UGLN specifically looks for the presence of longnosed bandicoots to help determine the health of the environment, so the increase seen in both numbers and distribution around Kinglake is excellent news. “If we see an increase in the
bandicoots, they’re a good indication of how successful our pest animal control projects and other projects to improve the habitat have been,” says UGLN Coordinator, Chris Cobern. Tony Fitzgerald, a Parks Victoria Ranger at Kinglake National Park, echoes this sentiment: “They’re like a platypus in a stream, they’re not considered rare, but if you see one, you know a lot of things are going right.” Along with being a good litmus test for the wellbeing of an ecosystem, long-nosed bandicoots perform tasks that are a vital part of the constant cycle of growth and
decay in our bushland. They are found all along the east coast of Australia and will happily live in a wide range of habitats, from coastal heathland to wet ash forests. “The long-nosed bandicoot is a fantastic part of the Australian environment. It’s really important in terms of the digging it does, just to turn over the soil layer and leaf litter decay and all those sorts of things. So they play a key functional role in many of those environments,” says David Lindenmayer, Professor of Ecology and Conservation Biology at Australian National University’s Fenner School of Environment and Society.
Their generalist nature when it comes to choosing a home and their reputation as prolific breeders makes long-nosed bandicoots quite a resilient species on the whole and better able to cope with increased environmental stressors than some of our other native fauna. “Bandicoots are like marsupial rabbits in many ways, they have this phenomenal breeding pattern where young females can basically have their first litters within about three or four months, and they can just keep punching out lots of litters of babies. Photo courtesy Chris Cobern. very quickly and often what happens is that they overshoot the resources that are available, and then their populations naturally collapse,” Professor Lindenmayer says. “So they go through a boom
and then a bust, which is a really interesting way of doing things. And when you think about how animals breed, it’s probably just as well they undergo a bust otherwise Australia would be chest-deep in bandicoots.”
Despite their capacity to literally breed like rabbits and ability to take advantage of a wide range of habitats, some long-nosed bandicoot populations in the southern part of the species’ ranges have declined over time, and they are now locally extinct in certain areas due to introduced predators and habitat loss. Speaking of his time spent working in the wet ash forests around the Murrindindi Shire area, Professor Lindenmayer says, “They certainly were more common in the 1980s when we were working there than they have been more recently.” Being medium-sized, ground-dwelling marsupials, long-nosed bandicoots are vulnerable to predation by foxes and cats, and these predators can have an even more significant impact when protective understory vegetation is removed.

“The long-nosed bandicoot is one of those animals we call a critical weight range animal, it’s the right bite-sized kind of critter for being knocked over by feral animals,” Professor Lindenmayer says.
“When you remove cover like scrublands, heath, and groundcover, you remove habitat, which exposes these animals to being more likely to be predated on by foxes, cats, and owls because their hunting can be more efficient.” Given the long-nosed bandicoot’s susceptibility to being fox and cat tucker, Chris Cobern says the increase in the local population around Stony Creek in Kinglake West is partly due to an effective fox control program being carried out on the Stony Creek Reserve and nearby properties of many local Landcarers. “We usually do fox baiting programs twice a year, in spring and autumn for one month at a time. In between baiting programs, we try to maintain other control methods as well like cage trapping or soft-jaw trapping and monitoring of them with cameras,” Chris says. Professor Lindenmayer agrees that introduced predator control in the area is likely part of the reason our local long-nosed bandicoots are on the up, with the species’ ability to

So in some ways, I’m not surprised that we’re starting to see a bit of a resurgence in the Murrindindi Shire area because it’s the time in the life cycle of the plants where bandicoots will often do really well. It sounds like that’s what we’re seeing, which is wonderful,” Professor Lindenmayer says. Monitoring by UGLN and anecdotal evidence suggests that conditions after the 2009 bushfires enabled longnosed bandicoots around Kinglake West to spread out and inhabit areas where they had been absent for some time. “Before the fires, you’d see the odd bit of digging here and there, so that was evidence that they were around, and the Number 1 Creek had a good population of them in Kinglake. But the regrowth that came back within the first two or three
years after the fire – when there was quite dense coverage – gave them the opportunity to disperse from the little pockets that they’d survived in. They’ve built up after the fires, and they’ve maintained that, so we’re still finding them in all the areas that we found them in originally after the fires,” Chris says. Much to Chris’ delight, he has also had bandicoot visitors on his property since the fires. “I never saw any signs of them on my property before the fires. But now they even come into my backyard. I’ve got a little garden at the back of my house, and sometimes we’ve been outside at night, just sitting in the backyard having a beer, and we’ve seen them scampering around,” Chris says. Tony Fitzgerald believes that Parks Victoria revegetation projects carried out after the fires have also contributed to the health and dispersal of long-nosed bandicoot populations in the area. “With the Watson’s Creek Habitat Link, we planted
about 40,000 seedlings, and we connected the forest that goes from Warrandyte through Christmas Hills, and St Andrews to Kinglake (there was a break in that line, it was cleared in the 1960s, and now we’ve reconnected that forest). The target species for that program was the brushtailed phascogale, but I think what’s good for the phascogale is good for the bandicoot. We’re finding already that phascogales are using the connections, and I would say quite likely the bandicoot would be too,” Tony says. Several of the known long-nosed bandicoot populations in the Kinglake Ranges are close to the township, and Professor Lindenmayer has seen long-nosed bandicoots around the Cathedral Ranges and along the Maroondah Highway going towards Alexandra. The proximity of local bandicoot populations to local human populations means that there is a lot of potential for Murrindindi Shire residents to help conserve the species,
especially if they have longnosed bandicoots living on their properties. If you’re not sure if you’ve got long-nosed bandicoots on your property or in nearby areas, eyeballing one as it goes about its business may not be the best way to find out. Instead, looking for the signs of their foraging for grubs, worms, insects, and fungi is an easier way to know if they’re around. “The long-nosed bandicoot has, as its name suggests, a really distinctive facial shape. It makes these distinctive conical impressions in soil, and it’s quite a different kind of digging or sign from rabbits and echidnas,” Professor Lindenmayer says. However, if you are keen to catch a glimpse of a longnosed bandicoot, it’s not impossible. “If you’re patient in the areas where they occur, and you’re prepared to sit and watch for a while when everything settles down, they’ll actually come out and start foraging. You can hear them as well; they make a small sort of coughing when Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2018 – 25
sneezing sound as they’re moving around in the forest or heathland,” Professor Lindenmayer says. For anyone cohabitating with long-nosed bandicoots, there are some relatively small things you can do to make a big difference to their ability to survive and remain in the area. “You can help conserve this species and other native fauna by keeping your pets confined to your house, particularly at night, and by not allowing them to roam into areas of potential habitat.

Reporting sightings of longnosed bandicoots (alive or dead) and their activity – or even reporting their disappearance in an area – is very useful for organisations like Landcare and Parks Victoria. “We are relying more and more on ‘citizen science’: the average person that has an interest and a camera, or a sighting, being able to help us out with gathering observations, especially around Kinglake where you’ve got people living on the edges of the National Park,” Tony says. AUSTRALIA IS home to four million pet dogs, generating employment for thousands of groomers to keep them cute, clean and cuddly for their adoring owners. But grooming isn’t just about running a set of clippers over a dog and turning it into something that looks like it just stepped off the set of Shaun The Sheep. To dyed-in-the-wool professionals, it is something of an art, crafted from a combination of ageold traditions, modern fashion trends and a sound understanding of canine health and anatomy.
as yet, unregulated, thus formal qualifications are not a prerequisite for picking up some scissors and popping a sign out the front. Some groomers are self-taught; some start under the wing of an experienced mentor; others undertake courses through TAFE or private colleges; and a few even take the next step and gain industry accreditation as professional groomers. Some do all four. Most, then, are happy to plod along with the daily work of removing hair from dogs in a more-or-less attractive manner.
And for some… it is an obsession.
But others … just can’t leave it there.

groomers in this country, less than 30 hold the prestigious title of Internationally Certified Master Groomer. That’s because achieving this requires the successful study and completion of not one, but four levels of industry accreditation, involving a series of written and practical examinations of increasing difficulty, conducted face-toface under the critical eyes of some of the world’s most award-winning groomers (yes, there is such a thing as grooming awards!). Show-quality knowledge of every breed and coat type, every technique and tool, every trick and potential trip-up, must be accurately demonstrated all whilst handling dogs of a range of
ages and temperaments in a kind and careful manner. Preparation of the coats of some of these pampered pooches in the lead-up to the exams can take months; whilst the reading, videowatching, seminar-attending, colleague-consulting and boring-your-husband’s-earsoff parts of the process can take even longer. Yet, believe it or not, one of these select (crazy?) Master Groomers lives and works right here in our very own Murrindindi Shire, at In The Pink Dog Grooming Salon at Taggerty. And her husband is still there too (just). Georgina Covington loves dogs. And whilst her family may regard this as a painful Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2018 – 29
understatement, her clients love her for it. Each and every one of the hundred or more happy hounds who attend her little salon at regular intervals throughout the year is treated with the individualised care usually reserved for a line-up at the Melbourne Royal. The terriers are correctly handstripped to maintain their bright colours and unique coat texture; the poodles and their crosses are lovingly scissored to achieve that plush, softer-than-soft look; the Shih Tzus and Lhasas trot out like teddy-bears; the gundogs appear to float on the breeze and as for the so-called “double-coated” breeds like Shepherds, Collies, Maremmas and Pomeranians, you’ll have to twist her arm hard if you want those shaved because if she gets half a chance to show you how good they look with a proper “traditional” groom – not to mention how cool they’ll feel – you’ll never allow them near clippers again! Meanwhile, as an equally qualified behaviourist and experienced obedience instructor (did we mention the word “obsession”, yet?), Georgina also conducts one-on-one sessions with those clients whose dogs need to work on their manners as much as their mop-tops. Lightning Thrill at the Old Windmill Australia Day 2018: “My hairs stood on end the night Hughie put on a spectacular light show on Australia Day. This image is two separate photos over-layed to make one, they were taken within less than a minute of each other. Camera: Canon 5D Mark 111, 24mm lens, 20 seconds, f10, ISO 800. The first zap of lighting was an amazing vertical bolt through the clouds. The second shot had a multitude of forks coming off it. The lens had to be covered quickly so another hit of flash lightning didn’t over expose it. By Emily Friedel ELLE SHAW is never without her camera. It travels in the passenger seat of her car, belted in and pre-set to an exposure she thinks will be suitable for the day’s conditions. She describes her need to record the world around her as an obsession, one that drove her for over 20 years as a professional photographer and now has her creating art for art’s sake. “I believe I am passionate about recording events, people, and the environment because ‘time’ can’t be repeated,” Elle says. Elle’s love of art started at an early age. Her mother, who was an amateur photographer, fostered all sorts of creative expression. Elle won a Barbie Doll and a blow-up dinghy in a colouring-in competition as a kid, which she puts down to her mother’s encouragement and says that her maternal artistic influence is still strong. “My mother, Gwen Shaw, though she has passed, is still my motivator. Craig’s Hut – the first day of winter: “Everyday I check the weather forecast to help me plan a special photographic outing. On the first day of winter in 2015 an early dump of snow was predicted, the road was still partially open to Craig’s Hut so off I set at 4am. My expedition prior was spent sleeping in my car only to wake to a severe frost. I had an hour of solitude at Craig’s Hut, carefully saving pristine snow for nice photos when a tribe of footballers arrived and trashed the snow with heavy footprints. I disappeared down a goat track happy as Larry having captured my series of Craig’s Hut looking like it was out of a film set. Photos copyright Elle Shaw. loving thought processes are ingrained in my soul. She set up a toy boat on the frosted birdbath; she photographed it to look like the Titanic,” Elle says. “She was a lot more patient than me, sitting for hours to wait for baby parrots to appear from their nest in a fence post. When I am about to give up after hours of looking for brumbies on the Bogong High Plains, I’ll stay just a little longer.” As Elle grew up on the family farm in Gobur, she continued to investigate different mediums and ways of documenting her surroundings. “When I was at high school I took on art and did that until year 12, and then I thought ‘it takes too long to clean all the paint brushes!’, and I went to photography. It was quicker, and I could somehow just record things and be more creative in an instant.” 34 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2018
Elle studied design and photography at the University of Melbourne as part of a Bachelor of Education in Visual Arts. After finishing uni, she travelled and while in Europe decided she wanted to set up a business taking pictures of people in the snow. And that’s precisely what she did. With her then husband, Mike Pischetsrieder, she started Mike & Elle’s Top Shots Photography and worked at Falls Creek for twenty-two years. Outside of taking photos of grinning tourists on the glistening white slopes of the ski fields, Elle spent a lot of time capturing the wildlife and pristine landscapes of the mountains. “That’s what I love doing most; I’m in my own zone out in nature. I’ll spend hours photo-stalking birds and animals or waiting for the moon to rise or a lightning
storm to hit. If I’m searching for brumbies on the high plains, the next minute there might be a dragonfly to photograph or a beautiful sunset on the horizon. There’s a nice silence, and I just sit there for a while and see things in rectangles. “I love photographing things that move; birds in flight are a true challenge, that’s what I like I about it, getting them sharp in flight.” Communing with nature on her own is something Elle discovered growing up in Gobur. While her three older brothers were off doing things like riding motorbikes, Elle spent a lot of time wandering around the paddocks and bushwalking. “So I think this is why I felt comfortable cross-country skiing or riding my mountain bike on my own. I have no trouble being alone in nature; it gives me time to appreciate the smells and
sounds. Camera gear is my appendage, of course. I can get closer to wildlife if I travel quietly alone. With the brumbies, I could chat to them and manoeuvre them, so they placed themselves in the nicest light.” Elle stopped working at Falls Creek about a year ago so she could live full-time on the family farm again and help out her father, who is in his mid-eighties, and who Elle says is the source of her perfectionism. Still consumed by her desire to record, Elle has taken the opportunity to photograph the farm and life around Gobur. “I like painting with light, so I’ll have a torch and photograph interesting aspects. I did a star photo, it was a really frosty, cold night up here on the farm, and I shone a torch on dad’s old chaff cutter, so it’s lit up, but the stars are still absolutely

brilliant in the background. The challenge is getting the cattle to stay still, so they’re in the picture too.” When asked about the artists that have influenced her work, Elle makes no mention of photographers (other than her mother); it’s painters, writers, and musicians she cites as sources of inspiration and shining lights in her artistic life. Wassily Kandinsky’s abstract art, which she saw at an exhibition in Germany, resonated with Elle, and she was fascinated by his artistic process. “He painted to music, and he was considered one of the first true abstract painters, so he didn’t have to represent anything, it was all just from his soul and heart.” Kandinsky once wrote that ‘music is the ultimate teacher’, and Elle let this principle permeate her own work. “Tom Waits’ song Ghost of Saturday night inspired the photo of the spinning clothesline, with the stars really sharp in the
background, and the clothes spinning so they look quite ghostly – dad’s washing on the line,” Elle says with a laugh. The fact that artists other than photographers have shaped Elle’s work may explain why people often mistake her photographs for paintings. This unique quality in her images is something that has long been present, with an aunty commenting some 18 years ago that Elle’s photo of a pelican looked like a painting of Mr Percival. To take her painting-like style of photography one step further, Elle sometimes uses paint to turn her photographs into what she calls ‘paintographs’. “I stretch the photo onto the canvas, and I paint the delicate bits. So if it’s a bird, I add a glint in the eye and sharpen the beak. Huts are fantastic for that. It gives them texture and depth and adds that extra space to – people want to touch them.” For Elle, the paintographs are just another way of recording the beauty that she sees and

HARD TO believe that the Jamieson Autumn Festival is in its fifth year, and still gaining in stature. A well-run, good humoured day out which is free because the organisers are all volunteers and the performers are all volunteers! It was originally conceived to showcase the amazing skills and talents hidden away in Jamieson and in its nearby high country townships. The ongoing success of this fun, free (not fun-free) day out says much for why living in rural areas can be so friendly and so satisfying. Each year, the festival expands just a little and changes just a little. Not only does this keep the festival interesting, but it also means that it can adapt readily and even be enhanced by those changes that were not anticipated. Nowadays, the main street is closed all the way from the cafe right down to the banks of the Jamieson River. This enables such a great atmosphere, with music stages at either end and in the middle. It also enables those quirky old machines to do a parade pass on Perkins Street. While not so old, one definitely quirky machine in 2018 will be the solar-powered 4WD Suzuki that crossed the Simpson Desert in a world record beating time. Throughout the day, there will be demonstrations of blacksmithing, gold panning, whip-cracking and bush cooking, as well as art workshops (including fine art, glass art, mosaic and sculpture), poetry and both modern and old dance.
Of course, some events have become annual favourites, just the way they are – especially the Gold Nugget Throw, the Cow Poo Lotto and the hilarious Hay Bale Race. Jamieson is not motivated by the idea of bigger is better. Instead, a festival that is small and perfectly formed better reflects Jamieson itself, with its two rivers, beautiful autumn colours and rich history. Hard to argue with that. As in past years, the festival will run from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 28 April. There will also be a guided walk among Jamieson’s old, rare and unusual trees at 10am on Sunday morning. A cycle adventure through 17 countries, from England to Narbethong By Tammy Lovett IT TURNS out if you’re attacked by a pack of wolves there really isn’t much you can do. I know this, because one evening after seeing a wolf not far from where Kosovo borders Macedonia, I was frantically researching how to sustain oneself during such an occasion. The article I was reading, written by a man who had survived an attack, reasoned you could probably stave off death from a lone wolf, but given two or more hungry animals, you’d be dinner pretty quick.
This did nothing to ease my worry, especially after reading another article detailing the gruesome death of a woman who was savaged by a wolf not far from where I was heading. So, with the thought of my body being torn apart, limb by limb by hungry wolves still fresh in my mind, I slept in my tent with my knife next to me from then on as I cycled across Europe. I was actually on my way home. On a cold British day less than a year earlier I thought it would be a good idea to cycle from England to Narbethong, via Turkey,
in search of some warm weather. So, having never spent longer than an hour on my bike at any one time, I loaded it up with all the bits I’d need, walked out of my front door and began pedalling to Asia. The journey took me from England to the Netherlands, where I found the Rhine River and followed it through Germany, France and eventually Switzerland. Before long I was in Italy, Slovenia and cycling down Croatia. Then I needed to work out how to get to Turkey. I decided I would follow the
coast of Croatia, dipping briefly into Bosnia, and back out again before cycling into Montenegro, then Albania. From Albania I turned east, cutting my way through the mountains to reach Kosovo. More mountain roads took me into Macedonia, where thoughts of wolves entered my mind. Bulgaria came next, along with the cold; the freezing cold. Temperatures hovered around zero and the heavens opened, flooding rains and thunder storms. Thankfully the sun managed to shine and a ferocious tailwind blew me out of Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2018 – 39

From Turkey I had flown to Queensland and began the final leg of my ride south.
I reached the Asian continent the night before my birthday. TWO YEARS on, and the event continues to grow. CycleDindi will return for a third time on Saturday 7 April and will showcase even more of the wonderfully scenic Great Victorian Rail Trail through the Shires of Murrindindi and Mitchell. Organised by the Rotary Clubs of Yea and Alexandra, CycleDindi is a fully supported, family-friendly bicycle ride that this year, starts at either Trawool, Yea or Yarck, depending on what distance the rider wishes to do and which starting location is easier for them to access.
There are three choices of long rides depending on where you start (Trawool or Yarck) and where you ride to. These rides are either 109 or 97kms. The short rides are either 47kms or 54kms and are either from Yea to Cathkin, Yea to Yarck or Yarck to Yea. Lunch is provided by the Goulburn River at Cathkin and riders are sure to enjoy this scenic location. Gentle gradients along much of the route make it suitable for most ages and fitness levels and the trail is a beautiful journey, traversing

rolling hills with stunning views. Again, there is fun to be had in the shearing shed, with a chance to view sheep dogs at work doing what they do best; rounding up sheep. This will happen at a working farm, Nutfield, right on the rail trail route (about midway) and includes a delicious homemade Devonshire tea. This has been a feature of both Cycle Dindi rides to date and has proven to be very popular, especially with riders from urban areas. CycleDindi18 is a major

At the end of the season, you may have armfuls rather than handfuls of zucchinis. Big zucchinis can get a little woody and have tough skin, which makes them unsuitable for a lot of recipes, but they are great for stuffing (see recipe page 52). By Emily Friedel THE ZUCCHINI is a wonderfully reliable plant. While other residents in the veggie patch are complaining that the weather’s not quite right or succumbing to garden pests, the zucchini is quietly plodding away, producing more fruit than you know what to do with. Zucchinis are not only reliable, but they’re also far more exciting and versatile than most people give them credit for. The fruit comes in a range of shapes and colours, and some of the heirloom varieties are quite lovely to look at and very tasty to eat. The Ronde de Nice, for example, is a French heirloom variety that is round with pale green, speckled skin and delicate, richlyflavoured flesh. Whatever type of zucchini you choose to grow, you’re pretty much guaranteed a glut if you do a few simple things. Zucchinis like fertile, well-draining soil, so preparing it with a good dose of compost before planting in spring helps. Zucchinis grow best in soil with a pH of about 6 to 6.5 and need adequate calcium to prevent blossom end rot. Application of dolomite lime can increase the pH and provide calcium. Zucchinis also like to be kept moist at all times, so water regularly and use
a thick pile of mulch around the base to keep moisture in the soil. A regular application of liquid seaweed fertiliser will support their heavy production throughout the season. Zucchinis require insect pollinators to produce fruit; this usually isn’t something you need to worry about, but planting flowers that attract pollinators can’t hurt. Rarely, in a season where there is a lot of wet or overcast weather or prolonged heatwaves, insects like honeybees may not be out and about as much to transfer pollen from male flowers to female flowers. If that happens, you will see the female flowers along with the tiny fruit at their base shrivel up and drop off before the fruit matures. If the insects are unable to do the job, hand pollination will work. Other than food, drink, and pollination for your zucchini plants, there are just a few pests and diseases to watch out for when growing them. Powdery mildew, a fungal disease, is one of the most common problems you’ll encounter on your zucchini plants. Powdery mildew prefers humid conditions and tends to target stressed plants, which means it sometimes appears during hot, dry spells. Avoid watering the leaves (water the
base instead), and keep up the seaweed fertiliser to promote a healthy immune system. If you do cop a dose of powdery mildew on your zucchinis, there are plenty of natural treatments like neem oil or a weak baking soda solution to help you combat it. Aphids are another common problem, especially on younger plants. Not only do aphids weaken your zucchini plants, but they can also transmit diseases like cucumber mosaic virus, which deforms the fruit and may make it bitter-tasting. So hose aphids off whenever you see them, and plant flowers that attract beneficial bugs like lacewings, whose larvae are ravenous aphid consumers. It’s a good idea to harvest zucchini regularly while they’re young, but even if you’re doing this throughout summer, you may still find yourself overwhelmed with zucchinis in autumn. That’s ok, though, because it’s the perfect way to discover just how versatile the humble zucchini is (or get in the good graces of friends who don’t have veggie gardens). Here are two recipes that are ideal for the cooler autumn temperatures and will help you put both young and old zucchinis to good use. Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2018 – 51
Zoodles with creamy avocado sauce Zoodles (zucchini noodles) are a delightful alternative to pasta for the carb conscious, gluten intolerant, or anyone who just wants to get more veggies into their diet. You can buy specialised tools to make vegetable noodles, or you can use a vegetable peeler to make them. This recipe is quick and easy, perfect for a light lunch. Serves 4 Ingredients • 5 zucchinis • 6-8 cloves of garlic • 4 tablespoons pine nuts • 2 avocados • ¼ cup fresh lemon juice • 15 basil leaves • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese • ½ teaspoon salt • 1 tablespoon olive oil Method 1. Boil the garlic. Put the cloves, with the skin left on, into a small saucepan and
cover with water. Bring the water to the boil, then cover the saucepan and simmer for about 25 minutes. When the garlic cloves are soft, remove them from the heat, strain them and remove the skins (you can just squish them, and the garlic should pop out). 2. While the garlic is boiling, you can prepare your zoodles. 3. Lightly fry the pine nuts in olive oil. Remove them from the pan as soon as they start to turn golden and let them cool (if you leave them in the pan they may overcook).
4. Prepare the sauce by combining avocados, lemon juice, basil leaves, salt, 2 tablespoons of pine nuts, ½ cup of Parmesan, and the boiled garlic in a blender or food processor until they form a smooth paste. 5. Heat the sauce in a saucepan or deep frypan. Once the sauce is warm, add the zoodles and simmer for about 5 minutes. The moisture from the zoodles should thin the sauce nicely, but you can add water if need be. 6. Serve hot with a sprinkling of Parmesan and pine nuts.
want to take a thin slice along the side that will sit in the baking dish to help it sit flat. 3. Hollow out the centre of the half zucchinis. If you’re using a big zucchini, the centre probably isn’t very nice to eat, so scoop out as much as you need to only leave the more tender flesh around the edges and give the bits you’ve removed to the compost heap or the chooks. If you’re using younger zucchinis, you can chop up the scooped out innards and add them to the stuffing mix. 4. To start making the stuffing, heat the olive oil in a frying pan, and gently fry the onion for a couple of minutes.
Add garlic, capsicum, mushrooms (and scooped out zucchini if you’re using it) and fry for another minute or so. 5. Remove the stuffing from the heat. Mix in the breadcrumbs, basil, and both cheeses. Add salt and pepper to taste. 6. Fill your zucchini halves with the stuffing, pressing it down as you go. 7. Bake for 30-35 minutes. The stuffing should be golden brown on top and the zucchini still firm enough to hold its shape. Turn off the oven and let the stuffed zucchinis sit in there for another 5 minutes. 8. Serve with a good sprinkling of fresh parsley and grated Parmesan.
Vegetarian Stuffed Zucchini There is always a zucchini that you have missed, and it has somehow grown enormous before you notice it. This recipe is a wonderful way to use the sneaky, oversized zucchinis that aren’t great for a lot of other recipes and turn them into a hearty meal for a cold night. Serves 4 Ingredients • 2 medium zucchinis or one very large zucchini • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 diced onion • 3 minced garlic cloves • 1 diced red capsicum • 1 diced yellow capsicum • 1 cup diced mushrooms • 2 teaspoons dried basil • 1 ¼ cups bread crumbs • ¾ cup grated Parmesan cheese • ¼ cup grated Romano cheese • Salt and pepper to taste • Fresh chopped parsley and extra grated Parmesan to garnish Method 1. Preheat oven to 190 degrees Celsius 2. Trim the stem end of the zucchini and cut it in half longways. You may also 52 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2018

Margot Bagnall in her bedroom studio in Marysville. The view from her studio windows is an endless source of inspiration, and the plants growing outside often make their way into Margot’s bold ink and watercolour illustrations. By Emily Friedel SINCE MOVING to Marysville early in 2017, vibrant floral illustrations have grown on Margot Bagnall’s pages. The colourful blooms have come as a bit of a surprise to Margot, whose previous work was predominantly black-andwhite, with a focus on portraiture and intricate ink drawings. From her small bedroom studio, with a desk set up in front of magnificent views of the surrounding gardens and wilderness, Margot speaks of the unexpected turn her artistic life took when she found herself embedded in Marysville’s greenery. “I would never have drawn bunches of flowers – I do prefer drawing portraits or the figure – but I have found so 56 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2018
many people are enjoying them, and I love making people happy. I think it’s because of where we live, just surrounded by nature, and, of course, living in Marysville is so beautiful.” “Having this space [for my studio] is incredible. It was an influence straight away, I think it cleared my head. And my work is definitely influenced by my surroundings and taking long, leisurely walks with Luna, my daughter.” Along with the parks, gardens, and bushland nearby, Margot’s botanical illustrations have been shaped by a wide range of art, from the bold ink lines of Japanese prints that she viewed while travelling there, to Margaret Preston’s iconic depictions of Australian flora. While the lively ink and watercolour
flowers may seem like a pronounced departure from her previous monochrome work, nature is something Margot has been exploring in her art for a long time. Time spent in a remote Northern Territory community left an indelible mark on Margot and compelled her to take a closer look at how humans and nature interact. After finishing a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours at Ballarat University, Margot did a Diploma of Education thinking she would find work as a high school art teacher. Instead, she fell in love with special education and, after working in the field for two years in Ballarat, Margot found a placement at Ramingining, which is about 500 kilometres east of Darwin.
The Ramingining community and the art in Arnhem Land affected Margot deeply, and left her pondering the complexities of how we humans fit into the bigger picture and our relationship to the natural world. “A couple of years ago I did a small collection of works called ‘we belong to the land’; it was about nature and man intertwined. So that came from Ramingining, seeing how indigenous people love the land and how we belong to it.” The human-nature interaction is a theme that continues through Margot’s floral paintings but in quite a different way.
Margot often explores the Marysville area with her daughter, Luna, taking in nature’s splendour and finding subject-matter for her art.
“The art I’m creating here, in Marysville, is about the world needing some lightness at the moment and taking it back to nature once again. Because it always comes back to nature, I believe. We belong to nature and as much as we push it, it will push back. We need to realise that we’re completely connected, we can’t live without it at all. I think that’s why people are drawn to the flowers.” The shift to lighter subject matter is also allowing Margot to test her technical skills as an artist. “I don’t have to go too far inwards with this type of work; it’s more of an artistic challenge for me at the moment, which I am really enjoying. I’m finding I can sit down and relax and enjoy the process.” But as much as she is loving it, this phase of painting plant life is likely as impermanent as the flowers that inspired it, and something for Margot and her patrons to embrace while it lasts. “I don’t think it’s going to last forever; I think at the moment people are really enjoying florals. So I’m going to continue on with this joyful creative journey with nature. It’s something I can do while my daughter is young, and I want to enjoy it because I want to enjoy art again after teaching. Rustic Simplicity, 74 Grant Street, Alexandra IT ISN’T really set in stone! ‘It isn’t really set in stone!’ follows on from the past two years of solo exhibitions by Rustic Simplicity’s Cindy Ferguson where, through a selection of her photographs, she explores the narratives we all have running through our lives at various times, whereby: • we repeat behaviour patterns and continue to suffer, until (2016); • we find the courage to take the road less travelled (2017); and • we learn to lovingly accept the impermanence of things (2018) . By breaking these patterns, we can virtually/actually change the way we
experience the past, present and potential events in our own lives and begin to live in acceptance of the transience of all things and see the futility of our desire for things to be otherwise. This next solo exhibition of photography by Cindy Ferguson (as well as again being printed on stone, amongst other media), is a collection of images from her travels of interesting art and architecture, amongst other things, of a seemingly permanent nature. This exhibition also revisits the first two narratives, which form the basis of the trilogy and which include photography demonstrative of our ‘Repeating Patterns’ in life and of our ‘Roads a
little less travelled…’ – both physically and metaphorically speaking. The art works demonstrate the beauty to be found in such journeys, despite the challenges they present. Little Fishes Art Studio, Falls Road Marysville DI KING Exhibition opens 24 March 2.30pm and runs through Easter until 15 April. Di is an artist who thrives on variety and the creative challenges involved in painting different subjects. Her understanding of colour and form and how these are influenced by the effect of varying light is truly impressive. Di’s ability to capture light and movement shows in her paintings, from landscapes, seascapes and cattle drives to portraits, beautiful nudes and draped figurative works. This versatility allows her to paint any subject fluently. Di’s love of the bush and all things Australian inspired her to join the “Cattlemen’s Association of Victoria” and the “Victorian Working Draught Horse Association”. There, her love of cattle drives, horsemen, river crossings and the High Country, along with her ploughing scenes, became synonymous with the art of Di King. Her paintings have always included the figure in one way or another. Di’s figurative work is evocative and sensuous, from lovely
young ladies draped in sheets or soft flowing fabric with moody back lighting, or dancers, to people in action on the beach, or in a bar or restaurant. Di’s thought process before actually putting paint to canvas, she says, is the most important key element in painting. It is very important to establish in her mind what design, shape, composition, temperature, colour and mood her paintings should take. Should it take the form of the classic S shape composition to lead the viewer into the painting, or a good strong line of triangles, which can create an interesting focal point within the painting? Light direction and colour balance are important to establish a sense of rhythm and harmony. From there, it is only the passion to paint the chosen subject. Di has exhibited in London, Paris and New York and has had many solo and group exhibitions along with several publications. She is a well known and respected artist with many awards and credits to her name.

late 1800s and early 1900s. Many of the earlier buildings still stand, although most have been altered over the years. A feature of the exhibition is the location – the Alexandra Shire Hall, which was opened in 1882. It is an impressive building with massive columns out front, and the brass Boer War Memorial and Honour Rolls for the two world wars. (See if you can find relatives’ names.) The Alexandra Historical Society is run by a small group of dedicated volunteers who have a passionate interest in local history and its preservation. The society is happy to receive historic photographs, documents, minute books, and objects that reflect the shire’s development and thank those who have already donated. Many hours of research have been carried out handling enquiries for descendants of our pioneers. THE ALEXANDRA Historical Society will host a free historical photographic exhibition on Saturday and Sunday 10 and 11 March in the Alexandra Shire Hall. This will be the second and final exhibition of the 150th birthday celebrations of Alexandra. Photographs will be exhibited for the first time, however photographs from last year’s exhibition will be available for viewing by request. Many of the 400 photos featured are from the archives of the Alexandra and Eildon Standard. Alexandra supported many photographers in the 20th century – Vallance, Cumming, Sapsford, Abomady and Weeks to name a few. There were also amateur photographers like Les Norbury and the editor of the Standard, TA Fox, who also produced and sold local postcards. The photographs on display feature streetscapes, people, railways, the timber industry, a selection of portraits, and a series capturing the construction of the big bridge over Lake Eildon at Bonnie Doon. The Society is a registered Place of Deposit (POD) with the Public Records Office of Victoria and has two archival storage facilities. Remember it doesn’t have to be old to be of historic value – even pieces from the 1960s are of value and are often ignored and disposed of, with many documents from this era already lost. The Society has a museum in Leckie Park, Dove Cottage, which is a restored miners cottage from the 1890s and is situated on the banks of the Ultima Thule (UT) Creek and surrounded by a beautiful cottage garden. The heritage garden was planted with advice from the late Geoff Olive, and grants from Open Gardens Alexandra and Victorian Open Gardens.
