Savor the Calm of a "No Expectations" Labor Day Holiday

F

or years, Labor Day has been billed as the unofficial end of summer.

Around here, though, summer hasn’t gotten the memo. The thermometer is still flirting with triple digits, the pool is still tempting, and we all know we’ll probably be wearing shorts well into October.

And despite the weather, it certainly

doesn’t feel like summer anymore. School has been back in session for weeks.

Friday Night Lights are already lighting up stadiums across North Texas. Dance bags, football pads, marching band rehearsals, volleyball tournaments, and color-coded family calendars have officially reclaimed the kitchen counter.

In other words, the busy season has arrived. And somehow, it’s only going to get busier.

The funny thing is, we often treat this stretch of the year like a marathon we have to sprint. We race from one commitment to the next, promising ourselves we'll slow down "after Halloween"... then "after Thanksgiving"... then "after Christmas."

Before long, it's January, and we're wondering how the last four months disappeared.

Maybe the better approach is to build in a few pauses before the pace picks up.

Labor Day is one of those rare weekends that doesn't come with a long to-do list or elaborate traditions.

There's no pressure to decorate, exchange gifts, or host the perfect gathering. It's simply a long weekend — a chance to enjoy a slower morning, linger over a cup of coffee, or spend an evening playing cards on the patio.

Sometimes, giving ourselves permission to do a little less is exactly what helps us enjoy the season ahead a little more.

In just a few weeks, pumpkin patches will replace pool days. Then come Halloween costumes, Thanksgiving menus, holiday shopping, school performances, neighborhood parties, and the annual realization that you somehow agreed to bring two desserts.

Before all of that begins, Labor Day offers

something surprisingly valuable: a chance to reset.

Take an hour to tackle one project your future self will appreciate. Clear out the pantry before holiday baking season. Clean out the coat closet and donate the jackets the kids have already outgrown—someone else may be grateful to have them before the first cold snap arrives. Hang that hook that's been waiting in the mudroom since spring. If family photos, holiday travel, or Thanksgiving reservations are on your todo list, checking them off now will feel like a gift come November.

Then stop. Seriously.

Leave a little room in the weekend for doing...not much at all. Grill burgers. Read on the back patio after the sun finally dips below the trees. Play a board game. Take an evening walk. Sit outside with neighbors while the kids ride bikes until the porch lights come on.

Those ordinary moments have a funny way of becoming the ones we remember most.

The holidays will be here soon enough, bringing all the excitement, traditions, and joyful chaos we look forward to every year.

But before the season shifts into high gear, Labor Day quietly reminds us that there's value in an unhurried afternoon, a simple meal, and a calendar with just enough white space left to enjoy it.

Denton County Deputies Honored with Lifesaving Award

T

he Denton County Sheriff’s Office proudly recognizes Deputies Gerrand Lockhart, Alan Henry, Ian Concepcion-Marquez, Shannon Roach, Tommy Cowan, Joseph Gilbert, and Sergeant Karisa Flowers for their extraordinary actions during a critical medical emergency that resulted in the successful rescue of a citizen’s life.

On the morning of March 9, 2026, while assigned to the Denton County Main Courthouse, the deputies were alerted to a citizen who had suddenly collapsed in the courthouse lobby. Upon arrival, they found the individual unresponsive, not breathing, and in immediate need of medical attention.

Without hesitation, the deputies quickly assessed the situation and began lifesaving measures. Working together as a coordinated team, they initiated CPR and

deployed an automated external defibrillator (AED) in an effort to restore the individual’s heartbeat. Their training, teamwork, and calm response under pressure ensured that lifesaving care continued uninterrupted until emergency medical personnel arrived on scene.

ebbie Sardone’s story is one of grit, growth, and purpose. What began in 1984 as a simple way to earn extra income — cleaning homes out of

the trunk of her car — eventually grew into a thriving, multi-million-dollar business and a mission to help others do the same.

As the founder of Debbie Sardone Consulting, LLC and creator of Cleaning Business Fundamentals, Debbie has become a

nationally recognized leader in the residential cleaning industry.

But her path to success was anything but easy. For 14 years, she built Buckets & Bows Maid Service while facing overwhelming challenges, including debt and operational chaos.

“I knew I was sitting on a gold mine,” she said, “but I didn’t have the steps to mine it.”

eadership is often associated with ambition and carefully planned career paths. For Dr. Susannah O’Bara, Superintendent of Denton ISD, leadership

emerged naturally through a lifelong commitment to serving others, working hard, and always striving to make a positive impact wherever she was planted.

Dr. O’Bara began her career in Denton ISD in 1991 as a classroom teacher. Inspired by her passion for helping students

learn and grow, she quickly discovered the profound difference

educators can make in the lives of young people. “I never sought

to become a superintendent,” she said. “I simply led from where I was in each role I had the privilege to serve.”

That mindset has guided her throughout a remarkable 34-year career in education. By focusing on excellence, integrity, and service rather than titles, she earned the trust and respect of

colleagues, students, and families, ultimately leading her to the district’s top leadership position.

When asked about the women who have inspired her, Dr. O’Bara immediately points to her mother. “She taught me to always

work hard, believe in myself, and hold my head high when others might cause me to doubt myself,” she said.

remain authentic, embrace their unique strengths,

and recognize that success is not about competing

with others.

“I truly believe for women to be successful does not require men to leave the table,” she said. “It takes the collective strengths

of men and women for an organization to succeed.” Dr. O’Bara believes successful leaders share several key qualities: integrity, humility, trustworthiness, flexibility, and a strong work ethic.

Equally important is the ability to envision a better future and inspire others to work toward it together.

Outside of work, she starts each day with exercise, viewing it as

an important anchor amid the demands of leadership. She also embraces a realistic perspective on work-life balance, understanding that different seasons require different priorities.

Above all, Dr. O’Bara is most proud of her family. She is the mother of two accomplished sons, Grant and Grayson, whose achievements continue to bring her joy and pride.

Through decades of service, Dr. Susannah O’Bara has demon-

strated that true leadership isn’t about seeking recognition. It’s

about showing up each day with purpose, leading by example, and creating opportunities for others to succeed.

Making Every Community Better Than Before Commissioner Mitchell has been guided by a simple goal: to leave every place better than she found it.

or Denton County Precinct 3 Commissioner Bobbie J. Mitchell, leadership has always been rooted in service.

Her journey into public office began in 1985 with a simple, relatable moment of life change — her daughter leaving for college

and household expenses shifting. What started as a practical decision to get involved quickly turned into a lifelong commitment to her community.

Commissioner Mitchell first served on the City of Lewisville’s

Board of Adjustment, followed by the Planning and Zoning Commission. Through those roles, she discovered a passion for civic engagement and a desire to make a meaningful difference.

After completing Leadership Lewisville and the Citizen Police Academy, she took the next step and ran for City Council,

serving from 1990 to 2000, including seven years as mayor. In

2000, she continued her path of service by becoming a Denton County Commissioner.

Throughout her career, Commissioner Mitchell has been guided by a simple goal: to leave every place better than she found it.

She credits much of her inspiration to the late Ann

Pomykal, former mayor of Lewisville, whose leadership and

dedication left a lasting impression.

Her advice to young women aspiring to lead is grounded and encouraging. She emphasizes the importance of believing in

yourself, staying true to your values, and not waiting until you feel completely ready.

“Mistakes are opportunities to learn,” she shares, encouraging future leaders to grow through experience and remain adaptable.

Commissioner Mitchell believes strong leaders embody integrity, humility, resilience, and compassion, while also being willing to collaborate and inspire others. Outside of her work, she finds

balance through reading, exercise, and focusing on positive moments — especially time spent with her nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, with another on the way.

Her favorite book, the Bible, reflects her foundation of faith and service. Through decades of leadership, Commissioner Bobbie J. Mitchell continues to shape Denton County with dedication, heart, and a deep commitment to others.

nesses, she has been actively involved with Chambers of Commerce everywhere she has lived.

That passion eventually led her to a role she never expected would become her life’s calling.

After completing her final term on the Board of Directors of her

local Chamber of Commerce, she was asked to step in as Executive Director “until they found someone else.”

She also found inspiration from women like Gloria Kennedy, who challenged her to think beyond perceived limits, and former boss Linda Scott, who recognized her potential long before she did.

Today, her advice to young women is both simple and powerful: put God first, never let anyone steal your dreams, and remember that being a lady never means remaining silent. She believes women belong wherever important decisions are made.

Creating Mums to Make

Homecoming Memories

A

ny Texan can tell you just how big homecoming is. From the largerthan-life football game and homecoming court to the dances, the list of homecoming traditions is endless. But one of the most iconic Southern customs is the homecoming mum.

While not exclusive to Texas, the state is well known for its massive, elaborate designs.

Designed to look like a flower, today's mums are full of braided ribbons, large bows, stuffed animals, bright colors, and just about anything else you could imagine.

The first homecoming mums can be traced back to the early 1900s, when they were nothing more than a flower pinned to a shirt with a few ribbons, and they've come a long way since.

Today, the art of making mums has become an important part of homecoming, often serving as a mother-daughter tradition.

Sabrina Rosser and Rayanne Good co-own RG Mums, one of many mum-making small businesses across the state. They are currently in their sixth homecoming season, and their business just keeps growing.

RG Mums started with two moms who loved crafting and wanted to experience making mums for their own daughters. As two Denton County natives who had simple pinned flowers at their own homecomings, they were excited to create mums for their kids.

Sabrina describes the tradition as a way for people to "showcase their personalities."

Whether it's a few ribbons braided together or a mum that ends up being bigger than its wearer, every mum is unique to the person wearing it.

From the many local small businesses to the countless people who make mums for themselves, friends, or their children, the mum-making community has certainly grown.

Sabrina and Rayanne will be the first to tell you how supportive the industry is, something they hope to continue fostering. Sabrina has been a board member of Mums-Inc.com for over two years, a community that has members all over Texas and highlights the sharing that happens between the business owners in order to keep the mum tradition alive.

"Most people don't have tutorials for how to make the things they sell," Sabrina said.

"But we do."

Sabrina's biggest piece of advice for anyone making a mum is to embrace the fun of it."It doesn't have to be big," she said.

"It just has to be you."

She also recommends starting early.

Mums are custom pieces that take time to create. RG Mums begins accepting orders in February and closes orders for its largest designs in July. That timeline makes sense when you see the scale of some of their creations.

New Orleans is a city that greets you with all five senses. Long before I arrive, I can almost hear the brass bands warming up in Jackson Square and smell the sweet drift of powdered sugar from Café Du Monde. The Crescent City has always felt like a place that invites you to slow down, listen closely, and savor deeply. As I was born and raised nearby, over the years, certain places have become my touchstones. These are the experiences that keep me returning.

Where I Dine: The Flavors That Stay With Me R’Evolution in the French Quarter is where creativity meets comfort.

The dishes arrive like small works of art, layered with familiar New Orleans Cajun and Creole flavors reimagined in modern ways.

Where I Stay: The Roosevelt – A Waldorf Astoria Hotel The legendary Roosevelt Hotel is always my anchor in New Orleans — a place where history and luxury meet in the most effortless way. Walking into the lobby feels like stepping into a grand Southern dream with opulent old-world charm. There’s a warmth to the space, a hum of conversation and clinking glasses from the Sazerac Bar that instantly settles me. After a day of exploring, the warm elegance of this hotel feels like coming home.

Where I Listen: The Jazz Rooms That Hold the City’s Soul Jazz in New Orleans isn’t just heard — it’s felt. At Preservation Hall, the air is warm and close, carrying the earthy scent of old wood and decades of applause. When the musicians begin, the vibrations move through the room like a heartbeat. It’s raw, intimate, and unforgettable.

The Jazz Playhouse offers a different mood — velvet seats, polished cocktails, feel both nostalgic and refined. Fritzel’s brings the lively Bourbon Street energy indoors, where laughter mixes with trumpet runs. Three Maries at the Omni Hotel offers an upscale, quieter, elegant escape.

Commander’s Palace remains the Garden District’s crown jewel. Every dish tells a story of tradition, pride, and hospitality.

Where I Explore: Experiences That Bring the City to Life The Sazerac House Legacy Tour fills your senses from the moment you step inside — citrus, bitters, oak barrels, and lively stories of cocktail culture told through interactive exhibits.

Mardi Gras World smells of paint, paper mâché, and creativity, with massive floats towering overhead like colorful giants.

And the Timeless Transportation Tour through the Garden District is pure magic in a vintage Cadillac. Riding past historic mansions, hearing stories of families and eras long gone — it’s a journey through one of the South’s most beautiful neighborhoods.

The National WWII Museum in New Orleans tells the story of the American experience in World War II through immersive exhibits and multimedia presentations. As the nation’s official WWII museum, it spans a six-acre campus with multiple pavilions.

These favorites are the places that continue to remind me of growing up near New Orleans, why I return — and why the city stays with me long after I leave.

Easy HOW TO FEED A LOON RECIPE

(Ready in 2 0 Minutes!)

MONGOLIAN GROUND BEEF NOODLES

This recipe is the ultimate BACK-TOSCHOOL weeknight solution that is easy on the wallet and guaranteed to satisfy even the hungriest family member at your table!

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

10 oz. noodles (ie, Udon, ramen, etc.)

1. Prepare the noodles per package instructions.

For the Sauce

2. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk the soy sauce with the brown sugar, vinegar, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, and cornstarch until the sugar and cornstarch are completely dissolved. Set aside.

½ c. soy sauce low-sodium ½ c. dark brown sugar 2 Tbsp. rice vinegar 1 tsp. sesame oil ½ tsp. red pepper flakes (optional) 1 Tbsp. cornstarch For Stir-Frying 1 lb. ground beef (80/20 or 90/10) 1 Tbsp. fresh ginger minced 4 cloves garlic minced (about 1 Tbsp.)

3. Heat your wok (or heavy skillet) over medium-high heat. Add the meat and don't break it up for a few minutes. Gently push the meat around to prevent it from sticking, but not too much; you want the meat to get a dark crust in a few spots. Then break the meat up and cook, stirring often, until it is no longer pink.

4. Tilt the wok to one side and remove all but about 1 tablespoon of the rendered grease. Use a large wooden spatula to push the meat to one side of the wok. Add the ginger, garlic, and most of the scallions and sauté in the grease, stirring often, for about 1 to 2 minutes. Stir the beef together with the sautéed ginger/garlic/scallions.

5. Give the prepared sauce a strong stir with your whisk and then pour it over the meat.

Stir-fry until slightly thickened, usually only about 1 to 2 minutes.

¼ c. scallions plus extra for garnish

6. Add the cooked noodles and toss with a couple of wooden spoons or spatulas until fully coated. Serve at once, garnished with extra scallions and toasted sesame seeds.

2 Tbsp. toasted sesame seeds
