Making the Most of Summer & Looking Ahead to A NEW SEASON

As summer starts to wind down, things are only heating up here in Denton County. From late-night movie outings to those final family adventures before the school year begins, this is the time to soak it all in. While we’re still holding onto summer, back-to-school season is already peeking around the corner, and we’ve rounded up some of the best local spots to get your kids ready in style.

Be sure to also check out our feature on the “10 Best Fests in Town” happening before the school bells ring again. These events are the perfect way to make a few more memories, connect with neighbors, and enjoy everything our community has to offer. It’s hard to believe we’re already talking about school supplies, schedules, and routines again, but here we are.

This month’s issue also carries a very special and meaningful feature. We are honoring my dear friend, Cathy O’Keefe, who we lost December 2025. In her memory, we are highlighting Winning the Fight as our Nonprofit of the Month. This organization is doing incredibly important work, and I truly encourage every family to take the time to read this article. It’s not always easy, but it is necessary. Educating ourselves and our children is one of the most powerful things we can do.

As always, I encourage you to continue supporting local businesses as you shop, dine, and explore. These are the people who make our communities feel like home.

Enjoy these last sweet moments of summer, embrace the excitement of a new school year ahead, and as always, thank you for being part of this incredible community.

How One Local Nonprofit Is Turning Pain Into Purpose

parent ever thinks it could happen to them. But if there is one thing to be learned from the ongoing fentanyl crisis in America, no family is immune to the pain and struggle of substance abuse. Even in thriving communities like Flower Mound, there are those among us quietly battling with addiction.

Fortunately, one local nonprofit isn’t giving up without a fight. Born from personal heartbreak and sustained by impassioned hope, the nonprofit organization Winning The Fight is working to change the narrative surrounding substance abuse. Through education and awareness, they are reminding families across Denton County that addiction can affect anyone, anywhere.

A Mission Born From Personal Loss

The story behind Winning The Fight’s creation is deeply personal. The late founder, Kathy O’Keefe, started the organization after losing her son, Brett, to a drug over-

"Individuals who struggle with substance abuse should be treated with the same level of sympathy and compassion as anyone who is sick.”

dose in 2010. What began as a devastating personal loss became her mission to help ensure other parents would not have to experience the same tragedy.

Current president Kathy Travis endured a similar heartbreak when she lost her daughter, Jessica, to an accidental

overdose in January 2021. Even Executive Director Paige Furin struggled with addiction earlier in life and is now channeling her perspective into service, advocacy, and awareness.

These shared experiences matter. Substance abuse is often viewed through a narrow lens, as something that only affects people in precarious circumstances or in communities unlike our own. Winning The Fight confronts this assumption head on, by reminding our community that addiction does not discriminate by ZIP code, income bracket, or upbringing. It can enter any home, touch any family, and leave behind a wake of confusion, grief, and unanswered questions. This is why the organization’s mission is so poignant.

“We need to stop the stigma of substance abuse,” Paige said. “Addiction is a disease, not a moral failing. Individuals who struggle with substance abuse should be treated with the same level of sympathy and compassion as anyone who is sick.”

How Winning The Fight Helps Prevent Overdose Deaths

At its core, Winning The Fight exists to educate, connect, and support. Its prevention efforts, which include public speaking events, are designed to build awareness and help community members better understand the risks associated with drug use, including the deadly threat of fentanyl. The danger is especially alarming given that seventy percent of synthetic drugs produced overseas contain harmful levels of fentanyl that can lead to accidental overdose.

“For every individual with addiction, an average of five lives are directly affected. If we can help one person every day, we’re making a huge difference.”

Other programs, such as Winners Circle, provide a place of encouragement and connection for those actively working toward recovery. Missing Pieces offers support to families dealing with the emotional aftermath of the loss of a loved one. Winning The Fight even offers NARCAN training courses that teach participants how to recognize the signs of an overdose and how to administer a potentially life-saving antidote. These programs do not erase the pain, but they give families something equally important: a course of action.

Winning The Fight also works with Denton County Juvenile Court, Flower Mound Municipal Court, and the Lewisville/Flower Mound Teen Court to assist troubled teens with substance abuse issues. The judges in these cases will often refer defendants to one of Winning The Fight’s classes. When completed, the results get submitted to that court indicating completion, and the judge can see how they did.

“For every individual with addiction, an average of five lives are directly affected,” Paige said. “If we can help one person every day, we’re making a huge difference.”

Community Events Bringing Awareness to Denton County

The organization’s outreach extends beyond meetings and classrooms. Community events, such as the recent

Winning Strides Derby, create opportunities for awareness, solidarity, and fundraising, giving people a chance to stand for a cause that affects more people than many realize.

Looking ahead, the 5K Memorial Walk and Fun Run scheduled for October 10 will offer another meaningful way for the community to honor loved ones, support prevention efforts, and show up for families in need.

By helping parents, teens, and community advocates understand that addiction is not someone else’s problem, that it is a collective responsibility we all share, Winning The Fight is turning misconceptions and stigmas into opportunities to learn and to grow as a community. And for those who have been touched by loss or substance abuse, their mission is proof that pain can be transformed into purpose and purpose into newfound hope.

Families taking care of families felt right, and the name on the side of the truck exuded skill, trust, familiarity, and legacy.

Somewhere along the line, however, something began to change. Large corporate and private-equity-backed companies became the standard. Sure, they could deliver the same services on a bigger scale, but you have to admit, things have felt … different.

Family First The Family Taking Care of Your Comfort Since 1980

“We were part of that change, and it wasn’t what we thought it would be,” said Joe Strittmatter, a second-generation contractor whose then-41-year-old family business was sold in 2021. He has since opened Rite NOW AC, Heating & Plumbing with his wife, Tawnya, and son, Jared.

“People keep asking me why I’m back in it, and the short answer is that if you’re going to be in this line of work, you’ve got to

There was a time when the home services industry was driven by family-owned and operated companies. For instance, if your home’s AC unit suddenly stopped working on a hot summer day or your water heater went on the fritz, you knew you could call the same friendly people who had been serving the community for decades and know your family’s comfort was their priority.

have some sort of servant heart. I’m a fixer. I always have been. If you call me, I’ll come out and fix it. I missed that.”

He added, “If you do the right thing, everything else that’s good ultimately comes with it.”

That’s the Strittmatter family’s goal with Rite NOW — buck the trend of cookie-cutter corporate service and prove that families taking care of families not only still matters but can also thrive in today’s competitive landscape. From AC repairs and heating installations to plumbing emergencies, Rite NOW offers reliable solutions built to last—all under one roof.

Those services matter more now than ever, especially as winter ends and the sweltering summer heat begins. Most homeowners in and around Denton County face a cascade of issues rather than a seamless

seasonal transition — leaky pipes, an AC unit that can’t handle even one more triple-digit day, one or two bedrooms that always feel 20 degrees hotter than the rest, busted garbage disposals, and, yes, even broken water heaters. But with Rite NOW, there’s always a fix.

That’s because their team has a combined 60 years of industry experience. Joe is following in the footsteps of his father, who started the family business back in 1980. He and Tawnya are now passing that same mindset, work ethic, and commitment to service on to their son, Jared.

Surrounding them is a growing team of friendly and licensed HVAC and plumbing technicians, and families choose them because they blend old-fashioned values with modern expertise — making comfort simple, affordable, and worry-free.

"We’re involved in the day-to-day, and that means better pricing, better quality, faster response times, etc."
— Joe Strittmatter

“We’re involved in the day-to-day, and that means better pricing, better quali ty, faster response times, etc. I tell Jared all the time, a business has to make money, but helping people is always our first responsibility. We believe in doing both the right way.”

Naturally, the real winners are the customers who continue trusting them and their rich legacy.

So, while the company name may be new, the family behind it is the reason everyone keeps calling them first.

“The corporate companies promise the world, but at the end of the day, they have investors that they need to satisfy,” Joe said. “The next thing you know, unscrupulous things start to happen. They become more bottom-line focused than customer-focused. Service quality slips, and prices go up. They’re also not required to follow the same rules as publicly-traded companies. That’s not who we are. We are family-owned and oper ated in every sense of the word.

To learn more about Rite NOW AC, Heating & Plumbing, including the many specials they offer and their free system giveaway opportunities, please call 469-6254452 or visit callritenow.com. Joe, Tawnya, and Jared can’t wait to hear from you.

Habitat for Humanity of Denton County Habitat’s 111th HomeFaith Builds Futures

Habitat for Humanity of Denton County was proud to celebrate the dedication of its 111th home, built in partnership with the McKee family, on Saturday, June 27. The ceremony took place on Hill Street in Denton, marking another milestone in the growth of Habitat Village.

The home is the second completed home in Habitat Village and was made possible through the dedication of Habitat's Interfaith Build Coalition. The Interfaith Build Coalition brings together local faith communities from a variety of denominations and backgrounds to work toward a com-

mon goal: building safe, affordable homes for families in need. Through financial support, volunteer labor, and community partnership, the coalition demonstrates the power of unity and service in creating lasting change.

The McKee family partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Denton County throughout the homeownership process by completing financial education courses, contributing sweat equity hours, and working alongside volunteers who helped build their future home.

“Instrumental to the success of Habitat for Humanity in our community is the continued partnership with the Interfaith

Coalition, where a diverse group dedicated to the betterment of our neighborhoods comes together. The McKee home represents the fifth such collaboration in the last 10 years—a collaboration built on the unifying message of coming together for a common cause,” Board President Brian Strohl said.

The dedication ceremony included remarks from Habitat leadership, representatives of the Interfaith Build Coalition, volunteers, and the McKee family as they received the keys to their new home.

Community members, volunteers, faith partners, and supporters celebrated this exciting milestone.

Mission ON A TO HEAL

No one likes going to the doctor, but when you have to, you hope and pray you get a good one. Fortunately for the residents of Denton, it looks like someone answered those prayers. When you walk into TotalCare Denton, you might assume it’s just another urgent care, but this medical facility offers far more. As a fully functional emergency room, they are equipped to handle the same critical cases as a hospital ER, without the long waits or the overwhelming hospital experience.

NOT JUST AN URGENT CARE — A FULL EMERGENCY ROOM

Like a hospital emergency room, TotalCare Denton has the same cutting-edge technology at their disposal, enabling them to perform CT scans, ultrasound, and X-rays. Tests can be run at their on-site lab,

How TotalCare Transforms Medical Care — And Lives — One Patient at a Time

delivering results within minutes.

That means serious conditions can be evaluated quickly, accurately, and with the same diagnostic power you’d expect at a major hospital.

TotalCare Denton can handle a wide range of emergencies, including fractures, severe abdominal pain, high fevers, respiratory issues, deep wounds, and even potential signs of stroke.

When patients arrive, they don’t have to wait for diagnostics to be sent elsewhere or worry about delayed results. The emergency room team can assess, test, and begin treatment in one place, often faster than a traditional hospital ER.

Beyond emergency care,

TotalCare also serves as a primary care physician for patients who need a consistent healthcare partner. Their primary care services include routine checkups, chronic condition management, vaccinations, preventive care, and ongoing health monitoring. If a specialist is needed, TotalCare’s team will make the referral and help coordinate care, so patients don’t have to navigate the system alone.

As a fully functional emergency room, they are equipped to handle the same critical cases as a hospital ER, without the long waits or the overwhelming hospital experience.

They even offer behavioral health services by appointment, bringing mental and emotional wellness into the same caring environment. This integrated approach means patients can address both physical and emotional needs without being shuffled between disconnected providers.

For families seeking comprehensive healthcare, being able to receive it from one trusted source is an absolutely godsend.

A FAITH-BASED PROVIDER THAT INVESTS IN PEOPLE

At the beating heart of TotalCare resides a company culture built on faith, leadership, and service. As a family-owned, faithbased organization, TotalCare believes healthcare should go beyond treatment — it should transform lives. This belief is embodied in how they treat their employees.

“We take pride in investing in our leaders,” said Dion Lampe, TotalCare’s Chief Marketing Officer.

Every physician at TotalCare Denton is a board-certified PCP with emergency room certifications to boot, yet beyond their medical expertise, personal values remain a quality they look for in their people.

Employees are not just hired to fill a role; they are seen as the future leaders of TotalCare, entrusted to carry the company’s mission forward.

Perhaps the purest example of TotalCare’s values is the TotalCare Foundation. This

charitable endeavor seeks to provide essential medical services to people who might otherwise go untreated.

The foundation is currently transforming lives around the world by bringing modern medical care to countries like Kenya, Uganda, and Mauritania, demonstrating their mission to heal.

A PATIENT-CENTRIC APPROACH YOU CAN FEEL

Every patient that walks through the door in South Denton is part of their larger mission to serve with compassion and excellence. In many hospital ERs, patients are quickly treated and released, with little interaction with the attending physician. At TotalCare, the experience is different.

“We take time to get to know our patients,” Lampe shared. “We invest in our patients.”

In most cases, attending physicians personally follow up with patients after they’ve been treated. This follow-up might be a phone call, a message, or just a check-in to see how you are recovering. Patients are encouraged to reach out if they have lingering questions or concerns, creating a level of continuity and trust that’s rare in emergency care. This approach has helped TotalCare grow steadily over the years. After opening their first emergency room in 2017, the organization has expanded to over 15 facilities, with three more locations on the

way, including an all-purpose facility in Denton’s Rayzor Ranch community. This growth reflects a clear demand for healthcare that combines hospital-level care with a personal, patient-centric experience.

“We are pioneering what we do,” explained Lampe.

For families in South Denton and beyond, TotalCare Denton represents a new kind of medical care — one that sees healthcare as a calling, not just a service. For anyone seeking emergency care, primary care, or behavioral health support, TotalCare Denton stands ready to invest in you.

Friends Happiness

Where would we all be without friends? That timeless question highlights the importance of having close relationships with people outside of our immediate family circle.

As we celebrate International Day of Friendship on July 30, now is a good time to start a new friendship or renew an old one.

Making connections with others – whether through work, hobbies, volunteering, or other avenues – could be the difference between living a happy, fulfilled life and one wrapped with a sense of isolation and sadness.

"A friend may be waiting behind a stranger’s face. Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud.”
—Maya Angelou

With our busy lives swirling ever so fast, taking time to spend with friends can be an important part of a balanced life.

Medical studies show the benefits of creating and maintaining a good network of people with whom you can share experiences, laughter, enjoyable events, and more.

Regardless of age, friends can be the ones to help you cope during a difficult period, lower stress levels, and increase self-confidence – just to name a few benefits.

Finding friends to connect with may seem overwhelming, yet it can be as simple as trying something new. Sign up for a workshop, volunteer at a local nonprofit, or look up and notice those around you – many of whom are also looking for a friend.

Ever notice when feeding birds, how many different feathers flock together to enjoy the tasty treats? Doves mingle with grackles next to sparrows, blue jays, and cardinals. Even squirrels and other furry critters stop by. And while we may not exactly know if these creatures become fast friends, we do know they invite others to join them the next day. The feast is enjoyed in a semblance of harmony and shared need.

The same is true of us as well.

Sit in a coffee shop or a restaurant and you will notice individuals come in pairs or groups while others seek a quiet corner. Start up a conversation as you stand in line or smile at everyone you meet. That could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Our future friends can be of many different backgrounds and experiences. And, collectively, we become the fabric of society, knitting together to create a quilt of strength, security, harmony, and love.

These friendships not only heal us but also heal the wounds of a fast-paced world.

FAMILY GETAWAYS

That Help You BEAT the North Texas HEAT

END-OF-SUMMEREscapes

A

s summer winds down, North Texas families are still looking for one more memorable escape before school routines return. The challenge, of course, is the heat. Fortunately, a great end-of-summer getaway does not have to mean long travel days or complicated planning. From luxury staycations close to home to waterfront retreats and scenic escapes a little farther out, these destinations offer the chance to cool off, slow down, and make a few more family memories before fall arrives.

Staycation Fun Close to Home

For families who want to remain close to home, Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine is a perennial favorite. Its indoor water park, themed suites, and all-in-one convenience make it especially appealing when the weather is too hot for outdoor adventures. Kids can splash, play, and explore while parents appreciate the ease of having dining, lodging, and entertainment under one roof. It is the kind of getaway that feels like a full vacation without requiring a

long trek from home.

Another standout staycation is Hilton Anatole in Dallas, where JadeWaters transforms a hotel stay into a true resort experience. The three-acre water complex features a beach-entry pool, familyfriendly activity areas, and plenty of room to relax between dips. If you want the feel of a luxury retreat without leaving the metroplex, this is one of the most refresh-

ing options. It blends city convenience with a beachfront resort atmosphere. If rustic charm and elevated comfort sound like the right mix, Hotel Drover in Fort Worth is a stylish choice. Located in the historic Stockyards, it offers a distinctive blend of western character and upscale design. Lake Days and Water Views

For families who prefer a real waterfront retreat, Lake Texoma remains one of the best end-of-summer options in the region. The lake’s wide shoreline, boating opportunities, fishing spots, and relaxed pace make it ideal for a few slow, sunsoaked days on the water. Whether your family likes to swim, fish, or simply enjoy the view, Lake Texoma offers plenty of room to unwind. For lodging, Tanglewood Resort on Lake Texoma offers a worthwhile alternative, with a comfortable stay and resort-style amenities close to the lake.

Canyon Lake in the Texas Hill Country brings a different kind of escape, with clear water, scenic hills, and plenty of outdoor recreation. Families can swim, boat, hike, or spend the day enjoying the beauty of the area’s rolling landscape. It is especially appealing for North Texas residents who want to trade dry heat for a more refreshing setting. For lodging, JBSA Recreation Park at Canyon Lake offers overnight options that make it easy to stay close to the water and make the most of the trip.

Scenic Escapes

With Room to Roam

If you are looking for a destination that feels more like a breath of fresh air, Mineral Wells offers a nice mix of small-town charm and outdoor activity. The area is close to lakes, state parks, and nature-focused attractions, making it a strong choice for families who want a little adventure without a complicated itinerary. Lake Mineral Wells State Park is a favorite for hiking, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors. Choose from camping sites, lakeside rentals, or the iconic Crazy Water Hotel for a practical base for exploring.

East Texas Charm

For a more rugged getaway, Lawton, Oklahoma, and the nearby Wichita Mountains offer a striking change of scenery. Families can hike, drive scenic routes, and look for wildlife in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, which feels worlds away from the suburbs of North Texas. An excellent choice for those who want fresh air, wide-open views, and a more adventurous end-of-summer trip. If you really want to liven your experience, consider staying at the nearby Apache Casino Hotel.

Further east, Tyler and the Piney Woods region offer a lush, wooded retreat that feels tailor-made for slowing down. Tall trees, scenic drives, cabin stays, and outdoor recreation give the area a peaceful, restorative feel. For families who want nature, space, and a softer pace before the new school year begins, the Piney Woods provides a superb option. A recommended lodging choice is Postcard Cabins Piney Woods in Larue, a modern glamping-style stay that offers comfort, privacy, and a memorable setting surrounded by trees.

IHISTORY in the Making

f you’re longing to learn more about American history after our nation’s historic 250th anniversary, you’re in luck. This summer, the American Revolution Experience will give visitors a vivid, hands-on look at the people and choices that shaped the birth of the United States.

Brought to you by the Flower Mound Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and co-hosted by Denton County Office of History and Culture, this traveling exhibit will be on display at the Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square from July 27 through August 12, offering a free opportunity to learn intriguing facts about America’s origin story.

Created by the American Battlefield Trust and the Daughters of the American Revolution, the exhibit blends storytelling, illustration, and technology in an accessible and engaging format.

Visitors will find 12 interpretive panels and three interactive kiosks that guide them through the Revolution and into the personal lives of the people who lived it. Rather than focusing only on historical figures, the exhibit highlights unsung heroes and patriots, including women, enslaved individuals, Indigenous peoples, and international allies whose actions helped shape our country’s founding.

What makes the American Revolution Experience so compelling is its emphasis on human decision-making. Guests are reminded that the Revolution was not won only by generals and statesmen, but by ordinary people whose actions carried extraordinary consequences.

Through documents, unique artifacts, and digital biographies, the exhibit connects those personal stories to the historic places where they unfolded, helping visitors

recognize that the legacy of the Revolution still lingers in our communities today.

The Denton showing also carries special meaning as part of DAR’s America 250! initiative, a nationwide effort to honor the 250th anniversary of American independence. This significance gives the exhibit added relevance, especially for families, students, and history lovers looking for an educational outing that feels both local and national in scope.

A formal opening and reception will take place Monday, July 27, at 5 pm, and will be open to the public. For local residents, this exhibit offers a rare glimpse into the Revolutionary War with a fresh perspective — through art, technology, and the voices of those often left out of the history books.

It’s time to giddy up and go to one of Denton County’s most beloved end-of-summer events — the North Texas Fair & Rodeo. This time-honored tradition brings together a vibrant mix of live music, rodeo thrills, carnival highlights, and hometown pride. Year after year, the fairgrounds become a gathering place where families, friends, and longtime fairgoers come to celebrate one of the region’s biggest seasonal events.

Running August 21-30, the fair offers 10 nights of entertainment anchored by a strong country music lineup. Headliners include Diamond Rio, the veteran band behind favorites such as “Meet in the Middle” and “How Your Love Makes Me Feel.” Also taking the stage are North Texas artist Kody West and country musician Chris Cagle, giving the fair a mix of familiar hits and local flavor that should keep the crowd engaged all week. While the music remains a major draw, it is only one facet of what makes this event so appealing.

As one of the fair’s biggest attractions, the rodeo delivers the kind of fast-paced action and Texas tradition that keeps crowds returning every year. Beyond the arena, visitors can explore livestock shows, carnival rides, and the midway, where the sights, sounds, and smells create that unmistakable fairground atmosphere. Families will also enjoy the kid and fun zones, which add an extra layer of entertainment for younger visitors and help make the event more than just an evening concert stop.

To make the most of your visit, plan to arrive early or stay late. This gives you time to catch the exhibits, grab a meal, enjoy the rides, and settle in for the rodeo or a concert without feeling rushed. Comfortable shoes are a must, and be sure to check the daily schedule ahead of time so you can organize the perfect outing around the events that matter most to your group.

Whether you come for the music, the rodeo, or the all-around fair experience, the North Texas Fair & Rodeo packs a fun-filled day of lively, family-friendly entertainment that captures the best of Denton County. For more information, visit ntfair.com.
