UNT FOOTBALL FINISHES HISTORIC SEASON WITH DRAMATIC NEW MEXICO BOWL VICTORY

T

he University of North Texas football program made history this season, culminating in a thrilling 49-47 victory over San Diego State in the New Mexico Bowl.

With this win, the Mean Green capped off their first-ever 12-win season, finishing with an impressive record of 12-2.

Under the leadership of second-year head coach Eric Morris, the team set a new single-season school record for victories, surpassing all previous Mean Green teams. North Texas entered the postseason ranked in the national Top 25, achieving not only its first bowl win since joining the American Athletic Conference but also securing back-to-back bowl appearances for the first time in school history.

The 2025 New Mexico Bowl proved to be a nail-biter, with a total of 96 combined points. After building a commanding 42-20 lead by the end of the third quarter, North Texas faced a dramatic rally from the Aztecs in the final moments. The decisive moment came with a 31-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Drew Mestemaker to Cameron Dorner, reclaiming a 49-34 lead late in the fourth quarter. The Mean Green’s defense then rose to the occasion, halting San Diego State’s potential game-tying drive just seconds before the final whistle.

Throughout the year, North Texas displayed one of the nation’s most potent passing attacks complemented by a relentless rushing game, chalking up an average of 512 yards per game. Mestemaker’s play at quarterback powered the attack, with the Mean Green surpassing 3,700 passing yards on the season and ranking among the top teams in the AAC through the air. In addition,

All-America running back Caleb Hawkins led the nation with 29 total touchdowns as a freshman. Unfortunately, both players have announced that they will enter the transfer portal, leaving their future with the team unlikely.

As the Mean Green close out their 2025 season with a bowl trophy, a Top 25 ranking, and unprecedented success, questions remain about how the program will perform next year under new coach Neal Brown.

However, even without their budding stars returning, the future looks bright for North Texas football as they continue to establish themselves as a powerhouse in the American Athletic Conference.

GAME From the tailgate, to the final whistle, and everything in between. Put your game plan together for Football’s Favorite Sunday.

TIME!

1. REP THE TEAMS

Get your guests pumped for the big game with fan gear for each team. Party supply stores carry beaded necklaces, balloons, tutus, pom-poms, temporary tattoos, face paint, feather boas, wigs, and even life-size cut-outs of the players!

Don’t be afraid to go all out and have fun!

2. PHOTO BOOTH

Carry on the costume fun with a photo station! There are tons of rental companies in DFW. You can even make a DIY setup with a ring light and an iPad. Add a football-themed backdrop, and you’re bound to be nominated MVP by your guests!

3. GAMEDAY EATS

Let’s be honest, the endless appetizers and finger food are what really steal the show. A classic arrangement of pigs-in-a-blanket, nachos, chili dogs, mac and cheese, wings, sliders, pizza, chips and salsa, and baked potatoes with all the fixings will surely keep everyone energized throughout the game.

4. BRING ON THE DRINKS

What’s an American sport without an American beverage? Grab a case (or two) of beers from the teams’ home cities, or make two cocktail options for each team based on their jersey colors. And for a non-alcoholic drink, Coca-Cola, of course!

5. DESSERT-GAME STRONG

Decorate a cake to resemble a football field! Bake a chocolate sheet cake. While you’re waiting, crush up some Oreos to sprinkle on top when the cake has finished baking. Wait for it to cool, then fill a pastry bag with green frosting, using a grass tip to replicate a turf field.

Next, draw out the end lines and mark them with the appropriate numbers. Lastly, add any other football-themed decorations you want to it: mini field goals, footballs, football player figurines, and sprinkles for confetti!

6. FOOTBALL SQUARES

Squares is a popular betting game that uses a grid scoring system that randomly assigns each corresponding columns and rows a numerical value of 1-9. It’s fun to keep everyone engaged and excited throughout the entire game!

HOW TO PLAY: 1. Write one team’s name in the spaces on the X axis and the other on the Y axis.

2. Invite your guests to enter the pool by paying an entrance fee*. Each player locks-in their bet(s) by marking a box of their choice with their initials**.

3. Randomly assign each corresponding column and row a numerical value of 1-9. Start from left to right, using an online number picker to maintain fairness; then do the same from top to bottom. It’s important that all of this is completed BEFORE kickoff!

4. Now that your grid is complete, all you need to do is wait for the game to start! A winner will be determined by the score at the end of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Quarters, and at Final Game. Match the numbers on the grid with the last number (single digits) of each team’s score, and see which square is at the intersection of that row and column. For example, if the Red Team has a score of 23, the correct number you refer to is 3.

5. Winner payouts are typically 20% of the pot for Quarters 1-3 winners, and 40% for the Final Score Winner. Good luck, and may the best team win! *Depending on the stakes, either charge per box or split the grid evenly among the group for a general fee. **Determine the order of picks with a random drawing, or on a first-come-first-served basis.

n the heart of Denton County, compassion and community strength come together through the work of Denton County Friends of the Fam-

ily (DCFOF). For more than four decades, this organization has been a steadfast

source of safety, healing, and empowerment for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Founded in 1980, DCFOF remains the

only nonprofit in Denton County solely dedicated to supporting individuals and families impacted by these traumatic experiences.

At its core, the mission of DCFOF is simple yet profound — to provide compassionate, comprehensive services to those impacted by rape, sexual abuse, and domestic

violence while partnering with the com-

munity to promote safety, hope, healing,

justice, and prevention. It’s a mission that has transformed countless lives, and one

that continues to evolve with the community’s needs.

A Milestone Moment:

In October 2025, DCFOF marked a mon-

umental milestone with the groundbreaking of the Denton County Family Justice Center (FJC) — a visionary project that

represents a new era of coordinated care for survivors and their families. The FJC will unite multiple essential agencies

under one roof, providing a trauma-informed, collaborative space where

survivors can access everything from legal

advocacy and counseling to safe housing and community resources.

“This project is about so much more than a building,” said Toni Johnson-Simpson, MSW, Executive Director of DCFOF.

“We’re creating a launchpad for growth, healing, and generational change.”

The groundbreaking drew more than 200 community members and local leaders, including representatives from Denton

County government, law enforcement, city officials, and major community donors.

Their presence signaled not only broad

support but also a shared belief that safety and healing should never be out of reach for anyone in need.

Team (SAT), DCFOF ensures that survivors receive immediate and compassionate

support, often meeting them in hospitals or at court.

hen former MMA fighter Gemma Sheehan hung up her gloves, she knew her journey with martial arts was far from over. What began as a career in competitive fighting — where she earned a 5–1 record and became Ontario, Canada’s, top-ranked female MMA Fighter — evolved into something far more profound.

In 2017, Gemma founded Girls Who Fight, a training center dedicated exclusively to women’s and girls’ self-defense. The mission was simple yet revolutionary: create a safe, empowering space where women could learn practical, effective skills from mixed martial arts.

“Martial arts changed my life,” Gemma said. “It gave me confidence that I could succeed and overcome anything. That’s what I wanted to pass on — skills that build not just physical strength, but self-belief.”

Redefining Women’s Self-Defense What sets Girls Who Fight apart is its laser focus on women’s safety. While most martial arts programs are designed for men and competitive athletes, Gemma’s approach is built entirely around the real-world situations women face. FBI data shows that 89% of sexual assault victims are female and that women are disproportionately targeted for violence.

At Girls Who Fight, the curriculum tackles those realities head-on. The Women’s Self Defense Beginner Course, the studio’s most popular program, is a 6-week series teaching defenses for common attacks and how to use awareness, boundary-setting, and verbal strategies.

“We’ve created a culture where every woman who walks in feels seen and supported,” she explains. “There are no cliques, no egos, no intimidation—just women lifting each other up.”

A Mission That Grows with the Community Over the years, Girls Who Fight has grown into one of the largest women’s-only self-defense programs in the world, surpassing 100 active students. The studio recently launched a Leadership Program, helping girls develop character, confidence, and leadership skills alongside their self-defense training.

Their youth programs — Girls (6-14) and Teens (14-17) — focus on building “superhero-level confidence” through self de-

fense and character development training.

Beyond the physical benefits, the lessons instill self-discipline, respect, focus, resilience, and the belief that strength and kindness can coexist.

Gemma’s impact has not gone unnoticed— she was recently honored with a State of Texas Resolution from the House of Representatives recognizing her dedication to the safety and wellbeing of women and girls across the region.

How to Feed a Loon

A creamy, flavorful dish

One-Pot Ingredients

Instructions

1 7-oz. jar sun-dried tomatoes in oil, chopped or julienned

1. Drain the tomatoes and hold onto the oil. Season the chicken with salt, pepper, and 1 teaspoon of dried oregano.

1½ lbs. chicken breast boneless, skinless, cut into bite-size pieces salt and pepper 2 tsp. oregano dried, divided 4 oz. pancetta cubed ¼ cup white wine optional 8 oz. mushrooms sliced ¼ tsp. red pepper flakes 2 tsp. garlic minced 3 cups chicken broth 2 cups dried pasta ½ tsp. smoked paprika 1 cup heavy cream 2 c. spinach fresh, washed, stems removed 3 Tbsp. 2. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chicken and cook, stirring often, until cooked through, about 5 to 8 minutes. Remove the chicken from the pan, place it on a plate, and set it aside.

3. Add the pancetta to the pan and cook, stirring often, until crispy, about 5 minutes.

Use a slotted spoon to transfer the pancetta next to the chicken.

4. Add the wine to the skillet and use a wooden spatula to scrape up the bits in the skillet. (or use an extra splash of broth). Let simmer until nearly evaporated, about 1 to 2 minutes.

5. Add the mushrooms and sauté until softened and beginning to release their liquid, about 4 to 5 minutes. Season with a pinch of salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Add the garlic and sauté, stirring often, for another 30 seconds.

6. Stir in the broth and bring to a simmer. Add the pasta and stir. Lower the heat slightly and cover. Cook until the pasta is tender and al dente, usually about 10 minutes. Stir the pasta every few minutes.

7. Remove the lid and stir in the sun-dried tomatoes, 1 tsp salt, ½ tsp black pepper, 1 tsp oregano, 1 tsp paprika (1 tsp), cooked chicken, and pancetta. Stir until combined.

8. Stir in the heavy cream and then the spinach. Stir until the spinach has wilted.

Enjoy!

9. Remove from heat and stir in 3 tablespoon of grated Parmesan. Serve at once with extra Parmesan passed at the table.

Woman’s Empowerment Program

Are you, or do you know a female who is fifteen years old or older? Would you be interested in learning powerful self-defense skills that can empower both your mind and body? If so, this program is for you! You will acquire advanced skills to recognize, avoid, and defend yourself in potentially dangerous situations.

The Woman’s Empowerment Program is a free class designed to teach women self-defense from both mental and physical perspectives.

The program aims to enhance situational awareness and build self-

confidence, helping some participants develop new confidence levels while restoring it for others. You will also hear real and raw testimonies from local domestic violence survivors who have graduated from the program.

The class is structured in two parts — the first hour is spent in the classroom, followed by an hour and a half of practical training. Participants will hit bags, learn strikes, and practice techniques to escape an attacker. The focus is on survival and personal safety.
