BACK TO SCHOOL 2020 - 2021

T

he 2020-21 school year will be like no other. The global pandemic necessitates school districts adapt and change.

Richardson ISD developed The Blueprint that includes choices for families and staff with multiple contingencies built in to address further disruption.

Classes began Aug. 19, and the learning occurred entirely through the RISD Virtual School for the first three weeks. In late August, RISD decided to return to in-person instruction in September on a staggered schedule. Students in Pre-K through 6th grade returned first, followed by junior high students then high school students.

Families may decide to switch between virtual learning and in-person instruction at the end of every nine-week grading period.

The RISD Virtual School for 2020-21 is completely different than what students experienced in the spring. Teachers and staff have created an online learning environment that provides students with the best possible education while being psychically at home during the global pandemic.

The district will provide personal protection equipment to students and staff as needed, but families are encouraged to provide each student with their own face coverings. RISD will follow a universal mask expectation for all staff and students. Younger students will be positively encouraged and reminded to wear a face covering.

In the event of a lab-confirmed positive test for COVID-19 on a campus, RISD will follow guidelines from the CDC and local health

authorities. Actions will be taken to conduct contact tracing to see where the infected person was during the period of contagion; identification of specific areas for additional disinfection; notification of anyone who may have been in close contact; and notification of ALL campus parents and staff.

Decisions about classroom or school closures based on multiple positive cases will be made in collaboration with local health authorities.

Visitors are discouraged from entering a school, with no visitors allowed beyond the front office.

RISD installed hand sanitizers and provided disinfectant to every classroom; and employees will keep high-touch and high-traffic areas sanitized throughout the day.

Ten minutes have been added to the school day to accommodate staggered arrival and dismissal times.

Each campus will devise a specific plan to meet its needs. Students will be divided into cohorts; these groups will gather daily in designated spots and travel as a group, minding social distancing.

There is no one-sizefits-all option to education. RISD remains committed to ensuring ALL students connect, learn, grow and succeed.

Kirsten Castañeda K

irsten Castañeda is Chief Diversity Officer and a partner in the Dallas office of Alexander Dubose & Jefferson, following 20 years as senior counsel at Locke Lord.

She recalls advice given to her while working on the Gator Gazette at Spring Valley Elementary: Don’t bury the lead. Tell the reader a story, and all good stories need a hook.

When she dreamed of becoming a writer in the sixth grade, she had no idea her writings would pave the way to oral arguments in the Texas Supreme Court and the Fifth Circuit.

Kirsten’s family has deep RISD roots. Her mom, Jeannie Castañeda Ovard, taught at Hamilton Park and Prestonwood. Her sister, Tracey, teaches at Thurgood Marshall Elementary. Kirsten said her sister, Sara, “learned so much through the RHS drama program that she won a

scholarship to UNT and then won another scholarship to complete her degree at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC.” Kirsten’s nephew, Jack, graduated from Berkner in 2019. Her niece, Caroline, is a junior at RHS.

In this issue of Connect, we explain The Blueprint, which is the new set of policies and procedures our COVID taskforce created in the spring and published in July.

The entire document is on RISD.org, and I encourage all of you to take a look at it.

Within The Blueprint are explanations of synchronous and asynchronous learning from home and how we’ve prepared for in-person instruction.

Two words I want to stress within The Blueprint are rigorous and growth. I’ve tasked our principals and teachers with the expectation that ALL our students will continue to be challenged academically while maturing emotionally and socially despite the hurdles we all face during this unprecedented time.

Please understand that my focus is on the safety of our students and staff. I did not make the decision to return to in-person instruction in a vacuum. Our team weighed many facets before deciding that our kids need face to face instruction, and we can do it safely.

The social and emotional impact from this prolonged isolation is causing many students to fall farther behind, and I believe delaying in-person instruction is increasingly detrimental to students.

It is critical that we as adults follow health and social distancing protocols and model those expectations for the children of our community. I truly appreciate your continued support as we continue to navigate this unprecedented time together.

INSIDE BERKNER'S Unparalleled STEM Center

B

erkner High School's transformation into a STEM Academy includes an Immersion Studio that provides students with an unparalleled 21st-century learning experience.

“Keeping students engaged in hands-on, minds-on learning is crucial during this unprecedented time,” said RISD Executive Director of STEM and Innovation Kyndra Johnson. “As this pandemic spreads in our local communities, we have to be flexible and adaptable in our efforts to advance and sustain STEM engagement. The STEM Center was designed to respond to a variety of learning activities and ever-changing technology. This is important as we adjust to the changes of in-person learning in this era of COVID-19.

The STEM Center is a place where academic partnerships with industry occur and enables our ability to provide authentic learning experiences to our students from grades PreK through 12, exposing them to the STEM content needed to learn today, as well as the STEM careers of tomorrow.”

Vandana Nayak is a principal in the Dallas office of Perkins & Will, which designed the studio using Igloo virtual reality technology.

Nayak said the Berkner STEM exploration center was designed to supplement traditional classroom instruction.

“The Berkner STEM center creates curiosity and spurs creative thinking in RISD

students from an early age so they can develop an interest and aptitude for STEM learning and pursue careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math,” according to Nayak.

Construction of the STEM Center and Immersion Studio was funded by RISD taxpayers through Bond 2016.

The school district’s STEM for All initiative – which affects nearly 10,000 students across the 16 campuses in the Berkner Learning Community – was seeded with a grant from Texas Instruments.

The Richardson-based tech giant chose RISD because of Superintendent Dr. Jeannie Stone’s commitment to the idea, the support of the school board, and the Richardson Chamber of Commerce, as well as the opportunity to execute on the concept through a larger school district’s feeder pattern comprised of largely underrepresented students.

TI also provides ongoing support to RISD students and staff as the district reshapes the teaching and learning of STEM concepts across all grade levels while working to ensure the relevancy and sustainability of the concept.

ISD will not hold a Board of Trustees election in November because there is only one person running

uncontested for each of the two seats on the ballot.

Debbie Rentería is the only RISD resident who filed to run for the District 3 seat vacated by Dr. Kristin Kuhne when her term expired. In May, the board named Rentería interim trustee after the election set for that month was canceled due to the pandemic.

In June, the trustees reorganized for the 2020-21 school year, and Karen Clardy was voted board president by her fellow trustees. The other officers for the upcoming year are Jean Bono as vice president, Regina Harris as secretary and Kim Caston as treasurer.

Clardy succeeds Justin Bono who decided not to seek re-election for At Large Place 6. Bono’s trustee seat was initially to be filled by the canceled May vote, but he agreed to remain on the board until the election of a replacement.

he initial deadline for the 2020 Census was April 1, but the pandemic necessitated the Census Bureau to adapt and change the deadline to Sept. 30.

In early June, local Census offices began reopening with all staff wearing masks and following local guidelines for safety. The goal remains to get a complete count of everyone in the United States.

Invitations to respond to the 2020 Census were delivered in March. About 69 million households across the nation were sent reminder postcards in the mail. For the first time, everyone can respond at 2020Census.gov, and the 10 questions are available in 13 languages. Everyone living in the U.S. is required by law to respond to the Census Bureau’s questionnaire, which does not include a citizenship question.

Debbie Rentería es la única residente de RISD que se postuló para el puesto del Distrito 3 que dejó vacante la Dra. Kristin Kuhne cuando su mandato terminó. En mayo, la junta nombró a Rentería miembro de la junta directiva provisional luego de que las elecciones fijadas para ese mes fueran canceladas debido a la pandemia.

En junio, los miembros de la junta se reorganizaron para el año escolar 2020-21, y Karen Clardy fue elegida presidenta de la junta por sus compañeros. Los otros miembros oficiales para el próximo año son Jean Bono como vicepresidente, Regina Harris como secretaria y Kim Caston como tesorera.

Vandana Nayak es directora de la oficina de Perkins & Will en Dallas, que diseñó el estudio utilizando la tecnología de realidad virtual Igloo. Nayak dijo que el centro de

exploración Berkner STEM fue diseñado para complementar la instrucción tradicional en el salón.

“El centro Berkner STEM crea curiosidad y estimula el pensamiento creativo en los estudiantes de RISD desde una edad temprana para que puedan desarrollar un interés y aptitud para el aprendizaje STEM y seguir carreras en los campos de la ciencia, la tecnología, la ingeniería y las matemáticas”, según Nayak.

La construcción del Centro STEM y el Estudio de Inmersión fue financiada por los contribuyentes de RISD a través de Bond 2016.

La iniciativa STEM for All (Educación STEM para todos) del distrito escolar, que afecta a casi 10,000 estudiantes en las 16 escuelas de la comunidad alrededor de la preparatoria Berkner, fue desarrollada por un subsidio donado por Texas Instruments.

El gigante tecnológico con sede en Richardson eligió RISD debido al compromiso de la superintendente Dra. Kirsten Castañeda K

irsten Castañeda es la Directora de diversidad y socia en la firma de abogados Alexander Dubose & Jefferson, con localidad en Dallas después de haber ejercido 20 años como una de los abogados principales en Locke Lorde.

Ella aún recuerda los consejos que recibió cuando trabajaba en el Gator Gazette en la escuela primaria Spring Valley: no escondas el titular, cuenta al lector una historia, y todas las historias necesitan un buen gancho.

Cuando cursaba el sexto grado y soñaba con ser escritora, no tenía idea que sus escritos abrirían el camino a sus argumentos en la Corte Suprema del estado de Texas y el Quinto Circuito. <<Tengo lindos recuerdos del tiempo que estuve en RISD. Mi educación me proporcionó bases sólidas que me permiten atacar problemas legales de gran complejidad en juicios y apelaciones. Mis maestros y

mis amigos me enseñaron el valor de la compasión, la importancia de la integridad y el requisito de mantener un balance entre el trabajo y la diversión. Según Kirsten, ella y su hermana Sara, aprendieron mucho a través del programa de artes dramáticas en RHS en el cual obtuvo una beca a UNT (Universidad del Norte de Texas) y posteriormente otra para terminar su título en la American Musical and Dramatic Academy en la ciudad de Nueva York.
