Little Elm ISD has come a long way from when my first child started public school 13 years ago, and I’m proud to say that my children go to this wonderful ISD. My three children have always had excellent teachers since attending kindergarten, to which I have even become good close friends with a lot of them.

Little Elm ISD has made huge strides over the past six years in making sure my children are equipped for the future, be it college or the workforce.

ittle Elm ISD administrators, campus leaders, teachers, and staff members have used The Destination 2020 Strategic Plan set forth by the strategic planning committee in 2015 to guide their work at the District. The committee, which was made up of

parents, community members, staff, and students, developed a plan that would help leaders intentionally design schools that

would impact the children served by the District. As the District approaches the year 2020, District leaders honored the work and refreshed the plan to prepare for the next five years.

A large part of the focus is student achievement across each classroom from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade. The three District Cornerstones are

what drives our academic work for student success in the classroom.

TEACHING THE STANDARD We are focused on ensuring every student has equal opportunity to learn in Little Elm ISD. By using a guaranteed and viable curriculum that is aligned with the teaching standards, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), we are creating that alignment for each of our students to be successful in the classroom.

RIGOROUS, RELEVANT, AND ENGAGING LESSONS Intelligence is not something you are “born” with but is based on developing a growth mindset through a variety of learning opportunities, according to the research of Carol Dwek, professor at Stanford University. For the students of Little Elm ISD, we have placed emphasis on planning lessons that will inspire, engage, and equip them to realize their full potential. To do this, we look at every lesson through three lenses: 1. Rigor - the complexity of learning that leads to student success.

2. Relevance - students value what is being taught when they can make a personal connection through their own experiences.

3. Engagement - lessons that cause a sense of wonder and excitement that will capture a student’s attention while they are learning in class.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES PLCs are a team of teachers who meet regularly to share expertise and work collaboratively to improve teaching skills and the academic performance of students. The goal of a PLC is to ensure we are all working together to fortify effective instruction, intervention, and enrichment for every student across the District.

ittle Elm ISD is committed to helping students make sound decisions when it comes to selecting an institution of higher education.

Informational Sessions: Students and their families can attend day or evening sessions and learn about financial aid, college admissions, scholarships, and NCAA eligibility for aspiring college athletes. Programs, such as Vamos a la Universidad, Conversation with the Colleges, Junior and Senior parent meetings, Home for the Holidays, Summer College Search Series, fall and spring College Fairs, and monthly College Admission Presentations, are offered all year long.

Instant Decision Days: Texas Tech University, Texas Woman’s University, Midwestern State University, and the

University of North Texas send college representatives to the LEHS campus to review student college applications and offer admissions on the spot based on eligibility.

College Road Trippin’: Students and parents are invited twice a year to travel across the state to a university preview day. We make this event affordable for families and easy for them to visit a college campus.

We have taken trips to Stephen F. Austin State University, Texas Tech University, and Texas A&M University.

Freshman College Tours: All 9th-graders and chaperones load up on different buses in the fall and head to various college campuses in the DFW area. Students visit campuses such as Texas Christian University, Southern Methodist University, The University of North Texas, Texas Woman’s University, Tarleton State University, and Texas A&M University at Commerce. This gives

students a first glimpse into college and sparks an interest early on in high school.

GO Center: Texas Woman’s University provides its experienced students to mentor LEHS students at the GO Center located inside the LEHS library. Students can receive one-on-one assistance with college applications, financial aid forms, and scholarship searches.

Eagle Advantage, Pioneer Promise, and GCU Tuition discounts: The University of North Texas, Texas Woman’s University, and Grand Canyon University offer our students tuition incentives, scholarships, and guaranteed admission for students ranked in the top 25%.

Over the last four years, graduating seniors have been offered more than $17 million in scholarships and have been accepted to over 150 different colleges and universities across the country.

PRIORITIES FOR CURRICULUM & LEARNING

F

ollowing an in-depth assessment and evaluation of curriculum and classroom instruction, the Curriculum and Learning Services Team at Little Elm ISD has engaged in a systemic approach to ensure the use of District resources is prioritized to support student achievement growth. Several commitments have been implemented or enhanced this school year and will be in full use for the 2019-2020 school year.

• Provide guaranteed and viable curriculum across the District.

New curriculum purchased for core content classes and new Curriculum Management Plan will ensure alignment between what is written, taught, and tested.

• Renew the focus on literacy where students engage in structured reading, writing, and conversations in all content areas.

• Conduct monthly classroom walkthroughs and data talks with campus leaders to measure how the curriculum is leading to student success.

• Develop common assessments to use across the District when measuring student understanding in STAAR tested content areas.

• Provide systems, time, and resources for teacher collaboration in Professional Learning Communities and curriculum refinement - teachers

• Ensure student learning experiences are at a high level of rigor and relevance in accordance with the International Center for Leadership in Education (ICLE) Rigor, Relevance, and Learner Engagement Framework.

• Provide ongoing job-embedded professional learning for teachers, as well as district and campus leaders.

• Provide enhanced support and instructional strategies to increase the achievement of English Language Learners. Core content teachers are also required to become ESL certified in addition to their content certifications.

In summary, Little Elm ISD is committed to our continuous improvement model called the Commitment to Excellence process. The Commitment to Excellence process ensures each campus has a singular focus on the academic growth and achievement for each student.

support their professional needs over the next three years.

NEW ADMINISTRATOR ACADEMY -

Administrators new to the District or the profession need support, too. This academy prepares campus principals and assistant principals for the

day-to-day tasks associated with running a campus and a deep dive into the instructional leadership demands of the modern principal.

Conference-style professional learning facilitated by our teachers, campus,

and district leaders is one of many ways our educators demonstrate and share best practices with their peers that

American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school students.

Helped Me

Find My Voice

A

fter moving from Ohio to Texas

in the middle of the fifth grade,

I was scared, yet excited, about the

possibilities ahead of me. Thoughts of

wonderment and feelings of uncertainty swirled around in my head until I

eventually ended up at Hackberry

Elementary. Life was slow for me at first and it didn’t exactly live up to

my glamorous Texan depiction, but I mastered the important life skill of learning how to be uncomfortable.

This skill is something that the teachers

and staff around me at Little Elm ISD and my parents pushed me to obtain.

I wouldn’t have described myself as shy, but I definitely wouldn’t have said I was

outgoing either. I was a rule-follower and people-pleaser to the max, and I tried to not assert myself in certain situations. However, my teachers began getting to know me more as a

person and encouraged me to step outside

of my comfort zone. I

Induction Ceremony at Prestwick STEM Academy as the President of the organization and speaking in front of a slew of parents and my peers. After my involvement in organizations such as Student Council, National Honor Society, and DECA, my communication skills have blossomed into one of my best attributes. Little Elm ISD helped me find my voice. I am no longer nervous to speak in front of a crowd, no matter how large. I emceed the pep rallies during my senior year and had a blast doing it. I met the curator for the TEDxPlano event and discussed one day sharing my big ideas on her stage. I excel at my job and ace every interview I take on because now speaking is just second nature.

My name is Marcus Gonzalez, and I am a 2015 graduate of

Little Elm High School. Life has been pretty busy since graduating.

When I was in the Health

Science program at LEHS, I knew I wanted to be

involved in healthcare,

but I was unsure of where I would fit best. Thanks to

the encouragement of my teachers at the time,

I decided to dive into the

pre-med life and face the rigorous learning ahead of me.

After graduation, I

traded in my navy and gold for scarlet and

on a full scholarship through the

Terry Foundation. This allowed me to obtain a college education at a

world-class university without having to worry about tuition. They even

sent me to study abroad in Europe!

HOSA is an organization that empowers students to become professional leaders in the global health community through education, collaboration, and experience.

sufficient fund balance in the general fund to be able to maintain fiscal

independence in case of a financial crisis.” (Board Policy CE Local).

fields, and tennis courts at Little Elm High School, and the incorporation of a paved concourse area with a new concessions building in the space between all

three ball fields. In addition to these

active projects, work this summer also

included roof work at Zellars, Brent, and

Chavez, Career and Technical Education (CTE) area renovations, and heating,

ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment replacements at LEHS.

1 cup unsalted butter, softened 3/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon salt 3 cups quick or old fashioned oatmeal

Cream 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) cup of unsalted butter, softened 2 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 tablespoon milk or half and half

DIRECTIONS

Cookies:

• Preheat oven to 350°F. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper.

• In bowl, cream together butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Mix in eggs and vanilla.

• In medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and

salt. Slowly add flour mixture to the wet ingredients. Mix in oats.

• To make large cookies use 3

tablespoons. Bake for 13-15 minutes

or until golden brown. To make small

cookies use 1.5 tablespoons. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Let them cool.

Cream: • In bowl, beat butter on medium-high speed for 5 minutes. Butter will lighten and become fluffy.

• On a low speed, gradually add in powdered sugar. Mixing on low until the powdered sugar is mixed in. Add vanilla extract and milk.

• On a medium-high speed, beat the mixture for an additional 3-5 minutes. If needed, add more milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, until you reach desired consistency.

• To assemble the cookies, spread the cream filling on the flat side of one cookie and place another cookie on top of it.

THUMBPRINT COOKIES MAKES 12 INGREDIENTS 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened 2/3 cup sugar, plus more for rolling 1 large egg 1/2 vanilla bean, seeds scraped from pod, or 1/8 teaspoon vanilla bean paste or 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1/3 cup raspberry, cherry or strawberry jam

DIRECTIONS • Preheat oven to 350. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.

• Whisk flour, baking powder and salt together in bowl.

• In another bowl, whip butter and sugar with a hand-held mixer until fluffy, about 5 minutes. Beat in the egg and vanilla until just combined.

Slowly beat in dry ingredients.

os administradores, líderes de campus, maestros y miembros del personal de Little Elm ISD han utilizado el Plan Estratégico Destino 2020 propuesto por el comité de planificación estratégica en 2015 para guiar su trabajo en el distrito. El comité,

uego de una profunda valoración y evaluación del currículo y de la instrucción en el aula, el Equipo de Servicios Curriculares y de Aprendizaje de Little Elm ISD se ha comprometido con un enfoque sistemático para asegurar que el uso de los recursos del distrito se priorice para apoyar el crecimiento del logro de los alumnos. Muchos compromisos han sido implementados o generados durante este año escolar y estarán en pleno funcionamiento para el año escolar 2019-2020.

CÓMO FUE QUE LEISD

Encontrar Mi Voz por Tatum Mowery

D

espués de mudarme de Ohio a Texas cuando estaba a la mitad del quinto

grado, estaba asustada y al mismo tiempo emocionada por todas las posibilidades

que yacían delante de mí. Pensamientos de

asombro y sentimientos de incertidumbre daban vueltas en mi cabeza hasta que un día terminé en Hackberry Elementary. La

vida transcurrió lentamente para mí en los primeros días y en verdad no estaba a la

altura de la glamorosa idea que me había

hecho de Texas, pero fue así que me convertí en una experta en la habilidad de aprender a sobrellevar la incomodidad.

Esta habilidad es algo que tanto mis

padres como los maestros y el personal de Little Elm ISD me impulsaron a obtener.

No me hubiera descrito como tímida, pero tampoco diría que era extrovertida. Me

gustaba respetar las reglas y complacer a la gente al máximo, y trataba de no dar a conocer mis puntos de vista y opiniones en determinadas situaciones.

Sin embargo, mis maestros empezaron a conocerme más como persona y me

animaron a salir de mi zona

de confort. Me di cuenta de

que esto era excelente para mi crecimiento, y empecé a lograr cosas que nunca me hubiera imaginado que lograría.

En fin, una de mis grandes

pasiones es la oratoria, y

reconozco que una gran parte

de mi desarrollo en ese ámbito

fue gracias al tiempo que pasé en

presidente de la organización; en dicha ocasión tuve que hablar frente a una

multitud de padres de familia y compañeros de escuela. Después de participar en organizaciones como el Consejo de

Alumnos, la National Honor Society y

DECA, mis habilidades de comunicación

florecieron para convertirse en uno de mis

mejores atributos. Little Elm ISD me ayudó a

encontrar mi voz. Ya no me siento nerviosa al hablar en público, sin importar cuán grande

sea la audiencia. Fui maestra de ceremonias en reuniones motivacionales durante mi último año de preparatoria y me divertí

muchísimo haciéndolo. Me reuní con la

coordinadora del evento de TEDxPlano para

discutir con ella la posibilidad de compartir mis grandes ideas en su escenario. Soy

excelente en mi trabajo y me va muy bien

en todas las entrevistas que tengo porque ahora hablar es parte de quien soy.

Tuve tantas oportunidades para

perfeccionar mi habilidad en Little Elm ISD, y creo de todo corazón que

ISD, el equipo de Servicios de Construcción del distrito continúa administrando un bono de 235 millones de dólares que los votantes del referéndum aprobaron en noviembre de 2017 para varios proyectos destinados a abordar el crecimiento en Little Elm ISD. Aproximadamente el 75% de los bonos aprobados por los votantes en 2017 ha sido vendido, y 98%

de dicho monto ha sido
