TO SUCCESS: Local Artist Turns Small Hobby Into Big Business

than a one-off thing when she, on a whim last year, decided to paint mandalas on a stone pathway in her backyard.

But then her mother-in-law noticed and wanted some of her own, and as word

12-inch stones she buys from the local nursery. She says it

takes a few days to perfect a

single stone, but the time spent is worth it.

“Just tell me what you want on there,

and I’ll do it,” Liz said. “So far, they’ve all

come out good. Even the ones I did in my backyard still look great a year later.”

She added, “I enjoy doing this, and it’s

nice to see so many people like them.”

he Denton County Sheriff’s Office has been working closely with other agencies to keep children safe from internet predators. We recently conducted a Joint Online Solicitation Operations that resulted in 10 onsite arrest and three warrants for arrest for online solicitation of a minor. These sexual predators walk among us – five live in Denton County, and the others live in surrounding counties willing to meet our children for sex. This should infuriate us as parents.

“This operation was a huge success; I am extremely proud of all the dedicated officers that worked long hours to take these predators off the street. I want to thank all the agencies that participated in making this possible. This type of operation should open the eyes of parents

and other citizens to the dangers that lurk on the internet. We will continue to be vigilant in our efforts to protect our most precious resource, – our kids.”

he Denton County community and beyond is rallying together to support a local American hero who was in a near-fatal car crash on Sept. 3 that forced doctors to amputate both his legs.

Dan Licardo, a former U.S. Navy Seal whose 16 years of experience includes combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, was on his way to pick up his son when he suffered a seizure while behind the wheel. His truck veered off the road and crashed at the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 2499 and Sagebrush Dr. in Flower Mound. He was airlifted to Parkland Hospital, where he is recovering.

In the meantime, the single father has been met with a groundswell of support from family, friends, and total

first heard of the Keto diet in the 1990s. My colleague, Joe, was following it to lose weight. He had a box of stuff that he bought at a pharmacy, and it seemed to

than food. Maybe he had some results, but what I recall

more vividly were his fatigue, irritability, and bad breath – which might have had more to do with the stress of his job as CFO of a large organization. Nevertheless,

we teased him congenially about his diet that made him nasty. The Keto Diet might be all the rage right now, but it’s not new: Joe was doing it in the mid-1990s, and it’s actually been around since the 1920s as a treatment for epilepsy.

We know a whole lot more about food and our bodies

than we did 100 years ago and even 30 years ago, and thank goodness most quality “diets” respect – and take advantage of – what we now know, such as the fact

that lower-carb diets are effective for weight loss and management, and fat doesn’t make us fat.

(That was a big ole lie from the 1970s when we were

told that fat was bad and it was taken out of everyday foods and replaced with crazy amounts of sugar and salt for flavor, at the expense of our health.)

paper towels, canned goods, and other miscellaneous supplies – to the point

where many of the paper towel boxes touched the ceiling.

“If I had to guess, I’d say we had

together,” said Jim, who with a friend loaded up two trailers and drove the

supplies to Houston. “We even had to

close early one Friday because of all the stuff that was coming in.”

very day, I get to teach people how to eliminate the mess that creates stress. But before I was a professional organizer, I was an overscheduled, overwhelmed, slightly stressed out mom. The house was a mess even though I felt like I was always cleaning. I would forget about appointments even though I was always looking at my calendar. I was tired even though I went to bed early each night. I knew there had to be a better way.

Here are 3 things you can stop doing right now If you’re ready to begin your decluttering journey.

1. Stop multitasking. Moms tend to be talented jugglers. We always have lots of balls in the air. We are proud of this talent because we believe we are accomplishing so much more than other people who can only do one thing at a time. Guess what. It’s not true. Research suggests that multitasking is less productive.

2. Stop doing it all by yourself. Make a list of all your responsibilities. Are you surprised by how long that list is? (I was!)

At times, it’s impossible to get everything done because we expect so much of ourselves. Give yourself a break and get help.

3. Stop doing things you hate.

Obligation and guilt are not good enough reasons to do something. Of course, there are certain things you can’t avoid like paying bills or working. However, it is possible to stop over-scheduling yourself.

Intentionally declutter your responsibilities and start to watch that messy stress melt away. You may notice your home and schedule start feeling less cluttered. You may even have more energy. Don’t get hung up on all the things you think you should be doing. Start thinking about a few things you want to stop doing.

Recipes

A

re you finding yourself failing once again at pumpkin carving? Don’t just throw it away – while you might have intended it to only be a decoration, you can easily turn it into a great dish or a sweet treat. Here are two great recipes that will recycle your sad jack-o-lantern attempt. So ditch the pumpkin spice latte, and get into your kitchen to whip up a bit of fall flavors in your own home (or don’t ditch the latte, we won’t judge).

ROASTED SPICY PUMPKIN AND SQUASH INGREDIENTS

PUMPKIN COOKIE DOUGH INGREDIENTS •

1/2 cup pumpkin pureed in blender

•

1/2 cup vanilla flavored protein powder

•

1/2 cup gluten-free oat flour

•

1 tablespoon of maple syrup

•

2 tablespoons of almond butter

•

1 tablespoon of almond milk

•

dark chocolate chips

2 pounds fresh pumpkin, peeled & seeded

•

1 tablespoon salt

•

1 teaspoon ground black pepper

•

3 whole yellow squash

•

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

INSTRUCTIONS

1 onion

•

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

•

4 tablespoons olive oil

•

(optional) sprig of thyme

In a bowl, combine the pumpkin, protein powder, flour and maple syrup.

Mix together thoroughly.

INSTRUCTIONS Pre-heat oven to 200 C or 400°F. Carefully peel and seed the pumpkin. Cut pumpkin and squash into 2” cubes. Cut onion into several wedges.

Place pumpkin, squash and onion into a large roasting tray before drizzling olive oil over it.

Sprinkle salt, pepper, paprika and cayenne pepper over the mixture to ensure everything is properly coated (you can add more or less cayenne depending on your taste and spice level).

Bake in the oven for about 30 to 45 minutes or until everything is soft & also tinged brown at the edges.

Before serving sprinkle a bit of thyme over the top and garnish with sprig of thyme.

Janae’s mother, Heather Cook, is extremely proud of her daughter for taking a stand. Competing in Royal International Miss requires contestants to turn in a scrapbook with pictures that represent all the community service they’ve done as well as the platform they are promoting.

“Yes, they have formal wear competitions and things like that, but it’s very intense and a lot of hard work,” Heather said. “She wanted the focus to be on her platform so she could continue to get the word out. I mean, you can look down at your phone for one second and end up traveling the length of a football field. The statistics are unbelievable.”

Heather added, “There are still so many people who text and drive. [Bringing awareness] is Janae’s job.”

Soon it’ll be time to decorate your home with jack-o-lanterns and autumn decor however you may encounter an issue. You have no skills at carving a pumpkin. What makes it worse is that all the pumpkin carving kits have horribly flimsy tools that bend easily and barely make a dent in even the softest pumpkins. What’s worse is having to reach in and scoop out all the slimy seeds and try your best not to get it everywhere. After all that. . . the pumpkin lasts maybe a few days before turning green in the warm humid weather.

Luckily we have several alternatives that are not only easy but also free of pumpkin guts. Since they do not require damaging the pumpkin, it’ll ensure that they last much longer than your standard jack-o-lantern. he 2018-19 school year hadn’t even got underway yet, and Guyer’s stellar athletics program

was already busy celebrating two early college commitments.

Junior outside hitter Hailey Schneider, a

standout on the Lady Wildcats’ volleyball team, verbally committed to Arkansas on

July 22. Seven days later, defensive tackle

Grant Mahon, also a junior, had committed to Oklahoma State. Both commitments were announced on Twitter and later

reported by the Denton Record-Chronicle.

Schneider’s and Mahon’s commitments are non-binding. The earliest they’d be
