enton County is home to a rich network of nonprofit organizations that work tirelessly to uplift neighbors, stabilize families, and strengthen communities — from providing emergency food and safe housing to mentoring youth and supporting those overcoming hardship. Whether it’s building affordable homes, distributing fresh groceries, advocating for at-risk children, or helping families regain stability through shelter and support services, these groups make a real difference here at home. HOLIDAY
ROM-COMS g i e l S t ha
By Ali Paraskevopoulos
Tis the Season of Hot Chocolate & Holiday Movies!
C
hristmas films are one of the most nostalgic parts of the holidays and have always been one of my favorite traditions. From watching “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (the Boris Karloff version) on Christmas Eve to forcing my family to sit through “Die Hard” and “Olive, the Other Reindeer” on Christmas day, holiday films always bring the spirit. The new age of holiday “Hallmark-style” rom-coms is spreading like wildfire, with so many new releases every year on every platform. HERE IS A LIST OF 10 HOLIDAY ROM-COMS THAT ALWAYS “SLEIGH.”

A Merry Little Ex-Mas
Starting off with a new Netflix release, “A Merry Little Ex-Mas” follows a recently divorced (or “consciously uncoupled”) pair and their young adult children as they navigate celebrating Christmas a little differently this year. Kate (Alicia Silverstone), our leading lady, always dreamed of being an environmentally friendly architect, and she’s starting to question whether she likes living in her now ex-husband’s small town anymore. Meanwhile Everett, said ex, is ready to shift some holiday traditions toward his new girlfriend. As they passive-aggressively co-parent their way through the holidays, they slowly relearn how to accommodate each other and the new people in their lives.
long, but the two grow closer while helping put together a children’s Christmas play. It’s full of familiar ideas but still packs some twists, even if you can guess the ending from the first five minutes.
Something From Tiffany’s
Switching over to Amazon Prime, “Something From Tiffany’s” follows two men who visit the same jewelry store right before Christmas for very different reasons — one is buying an engagement ring, the other is just looking for something pretty for his girlfriend. When their gifts accidentally get swapped, their relationships and holiday plans get tangled up. The mix-up pushes everyone to confront what they really want, and who they really want it with.
Hot Frosty
Another Netflix original from 2024, “Hot Frosty” mixes the classic Frosty the Snowman idea with a modern Christmas rom-com. Kathy, a widow in a small town, is constantly focused on everyone except herself until an oddly attractive snowman comes to life, starts taking care of her, and gently reminds her she deserves a little warmth too. It’s weird, it’s cute, and it’s very on-brand.
Single All the Way
This Netflix film follows a newly single, Peter, who asks his best friend Nick to pose as his boyfriend for his family’s Christmas. The fake dating doesn’t last
LiveLocalMagazines.com
One of the most iconic Christmas rom-coms out there. “The Holiday” follows Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet as they escape their messy lives by swapping houses for Christmas. In the process, they fall into new romances with Jude Law and Jack Black. It’s charming, cozy, and gives you just the right amount of cheesy holiday magic.
A Christmas Prince
A classic Netflix original that’s fun for the whole family. Amber, a small-town reporter, travels to the kingdom of Aldovia to get the inside scoop on the soon-to-be king, Richard. After a little bit of rule-bending to meet him, the two end up forming a very real connection. With two sequels available, you can keep the fairytale going long after the credits roll.
When Harry Met Sally
A classic rom com that I’d say counts as a holiday movie — think New Years. This film follows Harry and Sally (hence the name) through many years of falling in and out of each other’s lives. This brings the nostalgia while also providing the quintessential friends-to-lovers storyline you’re sure to enjoy.
Love Hard
A very modern holiday rom-com centered around online dating and the embellishments that come with it. When Natalie travels across the country to surprise Josh for Christmas, she quickly realizes he’s not exactly who she thought he was. Josh convinces her to stick around and help him with his family by pretending to be his girlfriend, and the classic fake-dating trope leads to real feelings (as it usually does) that go beyond curated photos and clever text messages.
The Holiday
Last Christmas
The Happiest Season
A Hulu original that follows Abby and her girlfriend Harper as they head to spend Christmas with Harper’s Family with Abby planning to propose. What Abby doesn’t know, Harper’s family has no idea she’s gay. Forced to pretend they’re just roommates while staying under the same roof, the pair has to survive the pressure of holiday expectations, small-town gossip, and Harper’s picture-perfect family. With Kristen Stewart, Mackenzie Davis, Dan Levy, Aubrey Plaza, and more, this movie is heartfelt, chaotic, and a little bit of a tearjerker.
Starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding, this film blends holiday romance with a touch of magical realism. Kate is stuck in a rough patch when she meets Tom, a too-good-to-be-true stranger who helps her rediscover joy during the holidays. It’s heartwarming, a little heartbreaking, and definitely one you’ll think about afterward. Holiday rom-coms might be cheesy, predictable, and full of the same tropes — but honestly, that’s what makes them perfect. They’re warm, comforting, and always there when the weather (or your schedule) gets a little too chaotic. So grab some hot chocolate, curl up under your favorite blanket, and let these films sleigh their way into your holiday season.

Bundle Smart & Buckle Safe This Winter Your Winter Car Seat Safety Reminder

t is finally getting cold here in North Texas. It’s the perfect weather for those cozy family gatherings. Let’s keep everyone safe and healthy, and let’s start with a reminder about car seat safety. Please remember that children should not be wearing puffy coats and clothing when strapped into their car seats. Winter wear puts too much space between the car seat restraints and the child’s body. In the event of a collision the fluffy padding with flatten out and free up space that may allow the child to slip right through the restraints and be thrown from their seat. It’s best to dress the kids in thin snug layers with a warm hat and mittens and avoid putting on those bulky coats until arriving at your destination. Tighten the seat harness as snug as possible. If you can pinch slack on the straps of the harness, then it needs to be tighter. You can then place a blanket or winter coat over the top of the harness straps if necessary. Give yourself plenty of time to head out the door for cold winter outings. Warm the vehicle up ahead of time and consider storing the carrier portion of the infant seat inside the house where it can stay nice and warm. It’s great to have an emergency vehicle bag with extra blankets, dry clothing, hats, gloves, water, and nonperishable snacks in case of emergency.

Naomi’s Village
Bringing Hope and a Brighter Future to Kenyan Orphans
I

n the tiny Kenyan town of Maai Mahiu, a place few of us could ever find on a map, lies an inspiring ministry known as Naomi’s Village. Founded in 2008 by Flower Mound residents Bob and Julie Mendonsa, this non-profit organization has blossomed from a dream of ending Kenya’s generational poverty crisis into a real-life pillar of hope for hundreds of vulnerable children. Naomi’s Village provides Kenyan children not just with shelter, sustenance, and support, but also with a purpose and a path to a brighter future. A skilled orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Bob Mendonsa spent many years visiting and treating patients across Africa. During one of these visits, he and Julie were profoundly moved by the plight of thousands of homeless Kenyan orphans. Witnessing their grim hardships firsthand ignited a fire within the Mendonsas and prompted them to take action. They envisioned a safe haven for these children, which culminated in the establishment of Naomi’s Village. Beyond offering shelter and nourishment, Naomi’s Village fosters an environment where children can flourish emotionally and educationally. 16 | LANTANA LIVING
Recognizing the systemic causes of poverty in Kenya, Naomi's Village has expanded its mission over the years. Since its inception, the ministry has added a preschool and a preparatory school, which has enabled the organization to provide a formal education to the children in their care. Currently, LEAP preschool, which stands for Literacy, Exploration, Academics, and Play, is home to 100 eager little learners, while Cornerstone Preparatory Academy educates 389 older students. Over the years, Naomi’s Village has continued to build its infrastructure, adding a gymnasium, a library, and additional classrooms with the goal of serving up to 1000 students. These steps equip and empower these children with the necessary skills and knowl-

edge to become Kenya's future leaders, ensuring that the mission of Naomi's Village flourishes for generations to come. The Mendonsas have made significant strides in improving the quality of life for these children, but they have not embarked on this journey alone. Back home, the local community has rallied around Naomi's Village, and much of the support has come from the dedicated members of the Cross Timbers Rotary Club. Led by President Bob Phillips, the club has become instrumental in raising awareness and funds for the organization, standing as a testament to the power of community spirit. some attending college abroad so that they can return to Kenya to continue the ministry’s mission. Exemplified by the altruistic efforts of the Mendonsas and the Cross Timbers Rotary Club, Naomi’s Village represents a powerful blend of local and global support. However, there is always more work to be done, and the Flower Mound community can play a pivotal role in continuing this mission. One impactful way to help is by becoming a sponsor for a child at Naomi’s Village. Not only are you able to provide basic needs for this child, but you are also encouraged to follow them as they continue to grow and evolve. For those in Flower Mound and beyond, the resounding message remains clear: together, we can change lives, and even the world, one act of kindness at a time.

Denton County's the Place to Be
E
very day, more than 90 new residents join our vibrant county, drawn by its promise and potential.
Over the past four years, Denton County has made significant strides in various areas from law enforcement to a county-wide fire plan.
Law enforcement pay was increased by 14 percent to bolster recruitment and retention, ensuring the safety and security of all residents. A Human Trafficking Unit was created in 2022 with our Sheriff’s Office, which has led to almost 300 arrests. Our District Attorney’s Office recently announced a multi-year partnership with the Human Trafficking Institute to expand and strengthen the county’s ability to combat trafficking. An innovative, county-wide fire plan was developed for the unincorporated parts of the county, which still make up half of the area. This plan was created in collaboration with local fire departments, cities, and special districts, showcasing the county's commitment to protecting lives and property. Partnerships have been a cornerstone of Denton County's success. The Mayors Council was established to further develop. We also coordinate with our school district superintendents on educational issues. The county has been in the process of acquiring, with local and federal dollars, 600 acres of land for the EXPO center in northern Denton County, as well as future county parks and open spaces. Transportation has been a key focus, with Denton County playing a significant role in
regional transit and mobility. Exciting developments in transportation include planning for the Denton County Outer Loop in the northern part of the county. The grassroots effort for the TRIP 22 Transportation Bond Program, worth $650 million, was a success, and Denton County maintained an AAA bond rating, a rare achievement in the state. Taxes have been lowered, with the current property tax rate at its lowest in 40 years — since 1986. For the past four years, property taxes have been consistently reduced. And the Commissioners Court’s efforts to restructure the Denton Central Appraisal District administration and board in coordination with cities and school districts have also been successful. Economic development has flourished, with $2.1 billion in total investments and 2,323 new jobs created in recent years with more on the horizon. The county's strong and diverse tax base has enabled these achievements. Non-profits play a vital role in Denton County, and the county has supported seven community service non-profit agencies with over $20 million in federal funding as one-time infusion for their capital projects. These projects sustain vital community services, benefiting organizations like Denton County Friends of the Family, Giving Grace, Special Abilities of North Texas, Bob's House of Hope, Boys and Girls Club, Life Works, Christian Community Action, and the Denton County Bar Association. Looking to the future, Denton County aims

to continue being among the top attractions regionally and across the state. Our focus is to collaborate, initiate, and develop opportunities at all levels to ensure our residents have the opportunities they need for success. Mental health initiatives, such as navigators and planning for future mental health needs, are a priority. We implemented an online self-help program for mental health and launched an easy online service to connect people in need with services. Property has been purchased to house the civil courts building and the eventual expansion of other departments. The county is committed to attracting quality jobs and working with cities and school districts for quality master-planned developments in unincorporated Denton County like Furst Ranch, Landmark, and Hunter Ranch – to name a few. Preserving our history is also vitally important as we plan for fast-paced growth. As a fifth generation Denton County resident, I have worked closely with our Office of History & Culture on the continued development of our Denton County Historical Park off Mulberry Street in Denton with five historic homes and an old-time grocery store. As the county’s last old-time general store, the Stony location was a terrific find with shelves stocked with empty yet original bottles of elixirs, medicines, salves, and other items used in the late 1800s and early 1900s. We bought the store and its contents and hope to restore and open it at the historical park in 2026. Denton County's story is one of growth, collaboration, and a bright future where people come to live, work, and play, and everyone thrives together.

SNAKES Rare Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Makes Historic Debut in Denton County
by Craig Hewitt

F
or the first time ever, a western diamondback rattlesnake has been spotted and documented in Denton County. Captured in Lantana by local volunteer and renowned “Snake Whisperer” Rob Boles, this discovery has sparked interest and debate, not only concerning the snake itself, but also about the significance of its presence and the often misunderstood nature of snakes in general. 22 | LANTANA LIVING

Rob, a passionate service volunteer for nearly 15 years, removed the snake after a Lantana resident found the animal in her garage. Despite their fearsome reputation, the female rattlesnake was surprisingly docile, briefly rattling before being safely placed into a bucket. This significant discovery was confirmed through iNaturalist data, marking the western diamondback rattlesnake’s status as a confirmed species within Denton County. After being captured, the snake was donated to the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) for research purposes. Scientists plan to study its DNA, observe its behavior, and conduct further research once she is deceased. This initiative aims not only to understand the species better but also to contribute to the body of knowledge surrounding local wildlife.
A fan of snakes since his childhood, Rob’s formal journey into snake rescue began when he read about and responded to a copperhead sighting on Facebook. What began as a personal interest eventually turned into a passion, with his taking up to 80 calls each month and earning him the unofficial title “snake whisperer.” Calls that once came from panicked residents are now often texted photos for identification, a testament to Rob’s influence on the community’s perception of snakes. “People often think that snakes are aggressive,” he explains, “But you get what you give.” He emphasized the importance of debunking common misconceptions about snakes.
for identification. Simple actions such as these can prevent unnecessary fear and promote well-informed discussions about snakes in the area. In Denton County, the most common venomous snake Rob encounters is the copperhead, while non-venomous rat snakes are often found coiling around the local crops since they draw pests and rodents. Similarly, plain-bellied water snakes are often mistaken for their venomous counterparts, the cottonmouths.
In reality, snakes are elusive creatures that only move toward people when they feel trapped or blocked. Dispelling this and other myths are crucial for fostering a peaceful coexistence with these fascinating yet often beneficial reptiles. Another fallacy is that smaller poisonous snakes are more dangerous. Rob clarified that venom strength does not correlate with size — in fact, larger snakes typically carry more venom and can deliver a more significant dose. Many also assume that the shape of a snake’s head can indicate if it's venomous or not. This myth can lead to careless misidentifications, since non-venomous snakes such as bullsnakes are often mistaken for rattlesnakes. Many overly alarmed homeowners may also fall for the allure of snake deterrents
like "Snake Away." Rob warns against such products, citing a personal experience where he found a copperhead coiled directly on a path treated with the deterrent. “These products do not work,” he said, encouraging residents to focus on practical prevention methods. So, what should you do if you encounter a snake? Rob offers a straightforward piece of advice — “Live and let live.” If you spot a snake, carefully take a few steps back to ensure your safety. If in doubt, take a photo and share it with Rob
LiveLocalMagazines.com
If you want to make your yard less appealing to snakes, Rob recommends managing your outdoor space by eliminating food sources, standing water, and shelter that attracts them. Regularly mowing your lawn and clearing away debris can also deter snakes from taking up residence nearby.
The recent discovery of the western diamondback rattlesnake serves as a reminder of the rich biodiversity in our surroundings and the importance of understanding and respecting all creatures that share our environment. Through community education efforts and responsible practices, we can learn to coexist peacefully with these misunderstood animals, ensuring both their survival and our safety. As we embrace this thrilling new encounter for Denton County, local residents are encouraged to appreciate the beauty of wildlife, even that of rattlesnakes. By educating ourselves and remaining engaged with nature, we not only learn to live harmoniously with all God’s creatures, we become stewards of the world we share with them.

INDOOR ADVENTURES for kids
by Madison Reed
Here are some parent-approved, screen-optional ideas to keep kids ages 6–13 busy, engaged, and maybe even learning something along the way. When the wind howls, the sidewalks are icy, and even the dog looks like it wants to stay under the covers, parents everywhere hear the dreaded two words: “I’m booooored.” Fear not! Winter doesn’t have to mean screen zombies or endless sighs. With a bit of creativity, you can transform your home into a playground, laboratory, art studio, and adventure zone.

Move-Your-Body Time:
Turn your living room into a pint-size publishing house. Kids can write, draw, or dictate their own stories.
Even when it’s too cold to play outside, kids still need to move. Your hallway, living room, or basement can become an instant playground with these fun activities!
Indoor Story Studio
How to do it: Offer a “story starter basket” filled with random objects — keys, a ribbon, a tiny toy animal, a funny hat. Kids pull three items and use them to inspire a short story or comic-style illustrated adventure. Older kids can create chapter-style stories while younger kids draw or narrate to an adult. You can make the stories into keepsakes by punching holes in the paper and binding with string, zip ties, or binder rings. Bonus twist: Record dramatic readings of each story and create a family “winter anthology” to watch or reread later.
Game Time:
Build-Your-Own Indoor Escape Room Turn your home into a family-friendly escape adventure. It’s part puzzle-solving, part teamwork, and totally unforgettable. How to do it: Pick one room to transform. Create a storyline — maybe a “lost treasure,” “mysterious inventor,” or “penguin rescue mission.”
Physical Fun That Doesn’t Require a Park
Hallway Bowling: Use empty water bottles and a soft ball. Laser Maze: Create a spy-mission obstacle course using painter’s tape or yarn zigzagged across a hallway. Dance Freeze: Always a crowd-pleaser. Balloon Volleyball: Low-impact fun to burn energy without breaking anything (hopefully). Why it works:
(with no snow required) Scavenger Hunt:
Nature (in the Burbs)
Take advantage of the brisk but usually snow-free North Texas winter by turning your backyard into a Nature Scavenger Hunt. Items to find: Oak or pecan leaf Acorn Pine cone Smooth river rock Berry cluster
Kids get to wiggle, laugh, and release winter wiggles.

Indoor Craft: Sock Puppet Show
A tiny bug
A perfect cold-weather craft that’s creative, cute, and surprisingly easy — and kids love acting out stories afterward. What you need: Old or mismatched socks; Felt pieces, buttons, yarn, googly eyes (or draw eyes on paper); Fabric glue or tacky glue; Markers How to do it:
Then set up 5–7 clues that lead from one puzzle to the next. These can be riddles, hidden objects, simple cyphers, or picture codes.
Pick a sock and decide where to place the puppet’s mouth (usually the toe area). Glue on eyes, felt ears, yarn hair, or anything else they imagine.
End with a “treasure” — candy, small toys, or the privilege of picking the next family movie.
Let the puppets dry a bit while kids build a mini stage — a cardboard box decorated with paper makes a great “theater.”
Why it works:
Put on a puppet show!
Kids love a challenge, and this one encourages problem-solving, cooperation, and imagination. Plus, you can reset and create new themes all winter long.

& One Outdoor Activity
A cloud shaped like something Why it works: Kids love the mission-style challenge, and a short blast of fresh air helps reset moods and cabin fever. Kids can race to mark off items as they explore, or work together as a team. It encourages observation, movement, and a sense of discovery — even when it’s too chilly for long outdoor play. Bonus: offer a small prize like choosing the next indoor game. Don’t forget the hot cocoa for afterward!
It encourages creativity, imaginative play, and fine motor skills — plus it turns into a follow-up activity kids can enjoy for days. ISSUE 12 | DEC 19 - JAN 16, 2026 | LANTANA LIVING | 25

Creative Ways R
to Regift
egifting has quietly evolved into a craft, a seasonal alchemy that turns surplus treasures into holiday gold. It's also something than can come in handy when you're faced with a last-minute giftgiving expectation. Before you dive into the art, remember
three anchor rules — the item must be unused, well-matched to its new owner, and scrubbed of any lingering tags from its past life. A tidy regifting station helps. For each gift, note who gave it and at what event — families remember things, office circles whisper, and children detect everything. Navigate with care and your rerouted gifts will sparkle without raising eyebrows.
by Murray Media
Create a Gift Basket
A great way to re-gift and make it new is to create a gift basket with all of your re-gifted items. You can display them in a cute basket with stuffing at the bottom for a more esthetically pleasing effect and add a decorative holiday bow to the basket handle. This re-gifting option is sure to leave the recipient impressed.
28 | LANTANA LIVING
| ISSUE 12 | DEC 19 - JAN 16, 2026
Pair it to the Person
Give the item a gentle origin story. Not “I didn’t want this,” but “This reminded me of your love for slow Sundays” or “I thought you’d enjoy this more than I can.” A thoughtful note reframes the regift as a deliberate match, adding warmth that no receipt ever could.
LiveLocalMagazines.com
Add a Gift with a Gift Card
Do you have too many gift cards to know what to do with? Re-gifting an unused gift card is a great way to make use of them. When re-gifting them, why not add a small gift that goes along with the theme of the gift card, such as a bottle of wine. Everyone will love the gift that keeps on giving.
Add Personal Photos
Picture frames are a great item to re-gift this holiday season, and it’s easy to take this re-gift to the next level. All you have to do is print pictures that are special to the recipient and add them to the frame. This will turn out to be a very sentimental and meaningful gift that they are sure to fall in love with.
Curate a Micro-Experience Add A Custom Touch
Transform a lone item into a themed moment. A regifted candle becomes a “winter unwind kit” when paired with a small bookmark, a sachet of herbal tea, and a ribbon that feels like it remembered starlight. The add-ons don’t need to be pricey — they just need to create a little story around the gift.
If the item allows it, personalize the moment rather than the object. Slip in a tiny recipe card with a regifted kitchen gadget, or tuck a favorite playlist QR code into a book you’re passing along. These small, bespoke flourishes make the gift feel considered rather than recycled.
Up the Presentation
Luxurious wrapping works like stage lighting. Choose textured paper, a sprig of greenery, and a handwritten card that feels personal. Add a sensory detail like a cinnamon stick or spritz of perfume, if appropriate. The packaging signals care, which gently erases the item’s former life and makes the gesture feel tailored.

Jiu Jitsu for
EVERYONE A
lejandro Siqueira and his team at Gracie Barra in Argyle insist that Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone. Sure, that may seem like a stretch at first. After all, most people have decades of preconceived notions about martial arts, whether it’s images of high-adrenaline fights, complex techniques, or athletes twisting opponents into pretzel-like knots. It’s all great stuff, but to suggest it’s for everyone feels, at first glance, like a bold claim. But step inside their inviting studio and onto those iconic royal-blue mats for one class — especially one taught by Professor Alejandro himself — and those misconceptions quickly start to fade. Parents train alongside their kids. For safety, beginners pair with advanced students. Meanwhile, nervous first-timers learn right next to seasoned athletes preparing for tournaments. The atmosphere is encouraging and structured. The energy is steeped in decades of tradition and legacy, yet built on a foundation of personal growth

Now in Our Community rather than intimidation. The goal isn’t to turn people into fighters. It’s to help them discover confidence under pressure, discipline, and a calmer mind —even in the most uncomfortable situations. “Gracie Barra jiu-jitsu has become a passion and way of life,” Alejandro said. He is a 4th-degree black belt and International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation World Champion. “We are excited to bring jiu-jitsu to Argyle.” Gracie Barra is one of the most recognized names in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Founded in 1986 by Master Carlos Gracie Jr., it has grown to more than 1,000 schools worldwide. What sets Gracie Barra apart is its structured, global curriculum, designed to ensure consistency, safety, and progress at every level. More than a martial arts school, it is a global family committed to personal growth, leadership development, and making Jiu-Jitsu accessible to everyone. The Argyle location opened in October and continues that tradition, offering programs for kids, adults, women, and competitive athletes. The gym’s 2,800-squarefoot space — complete with the franchise’s iconic royal-blue mats and its “legacy
wall” documenting the lineage of teachers — looks and feels like every Gracie Barra school around the world. Co-owner Ryan Kagay certainly believes that.
A formerly active U.S. Marine, combat veteran, and local business owner, Ryan began his jiu-jitsu journey in 2009. He’s been training with Professor Alejandro since 2012 — not just himself, but also his family. He and his wife have six kids, five of whom train at Gracie Barra Argyle. Someday soon, their 2-year-old daughter will join them. “Whether you walk into a Gracie Barra school in the Philippines or right here in Argyle, you will experience the same look and feel. We love that,” Ryan said. “It’s been great for my family. In many ways, it’s a passion. It teaches you to be comfortable with the uncomfortable. For instance, it can be humbling when you have someone on top of you on the mat, but you learn to breathe, relax, and employ the right techniques to get out of the situation. You can apply the same teachings to life — professionally, personally, and spiritually. That’s what Professor Alejandro
wants to share with everyone, and it’s what we want to share, too.” Ryan said all hands were on deck for a wildly successful soft opening in November. Over 60 individuals and families attended, filling the mat with eager kids, curious parents, and adults stepping into their first class. What was meant to be a simple introduction quickly felt more like a community celebration — people laughing between drills, kids racing to find their spots on the mats, and newcomers lingering afterward to ask questions and soak up the atmosphere. It was the kind of turnout that confirmed they were building something Argyle is ready for. And trust them when they say they have big plans for the school. While the studio is currently located on Hamilton Road off Highway 377, the plan is to eventually open a larger, permanent location just down the road in a few years. “It’ll still be right in the heart of Argyle, where this is meant to be,” Ryan said. “Jiu-Jitsu really can be for everyone. Gracie Barra does it right every time, and we’re excited to bring this experience to Argyle.”

Exploring 2025's Winter Fashion Trends
W
by Murray Media
inter 2025/2026 is bringing a wave of polished, cozy sophistication to fashion style — an aesthetic perfectly suited for anyone who wants to stay warm while looking effortlessly refined. This season’s trends lean into elevated comfort, understated luxury, and thoughtful details that make everyday outfits feel special without ever appearing flashy. Outerwear is the true hero of the winter wardrobe. Tailored wool coats in rich camel, deep charcoal, and winter white are everywhere, often featuring subtle wrap belts or structured shoulders that create a flattering, modern shape. Shearling is also resurging, with mid-length styles offering both warmth and a touch of indulgence — ideal for everything from coffee runs to a nice dinner. Knitwear continues its reign, but with fresh updates. Expect ribbed cashmere sets, mock-neck sweaters with sculpted sleeves, and longline cardigans that layer beautifully under coats. Soft, muted color palettes — sage, oatmeal, slate blue — are defining the season, making pieces easy to mix and match while still feeling sophisticated. 34 | LANTANA LIVING

Bottoms are embracing comfort-driven tailoring. Wide-leg trousers in wool-blend fabrics, soft pleated pants, and sleek knit midi skirts create effortless silhouettes that transition seamlessly from daytime errands to evening gatherings. Paired with knee-high boots or leather loafers, the result is practical yet polished. Accessories this winter lean into minimal, intentional design. Oversized scarves, chunky gold or brushed metal jewelry, and structured top-handle bags offer subtle elegance. Even cold-weather essentials — like leather gloves and faux-fur earmuffs — are getting a chic upgrade. The overarching theme? This winter is all about “quiet chic” — an approach that favors quality, longevity, and personal style over loud trends. It’s the perfect season to invest in timeless pieces that feel cozy, confident, and effortlessly elevated. LiveLocalMagazines.com

Reset &
Recharge A Cozy Winter Detox for Mind & Body by Madison Reed
T
here’s something magical about winter. Maybe it’s the way the air suddenly smells like fresh starts, or how our calendars transform into hopeful blank slates. Or maybe it’s simply the fact that the holidays are finally over and we can hear ourselves think again.
simple question: How warm can I make myself without becoming a safety hazard? Start your mornings with something cozy — herbal teas, warm lemon water, or even a homemade broth.
Whatever the reason, winter is the perfect time for a gentle, soul-soothing detox — a reset for both mind and body as we step into a brand-new year.
These comforting sips help hydrate the body, support digestion, and ease you gently into the day. If you want to feel truly luxurious, invest in a cute mug that makes you smile every time you pick it up. (Yes, it counts as self-care.)
Now, before you imagine yourself gnawing on raw kale while chanting affirmations in a freezing meadow, take a breath. A winter detox doesn’t have to look like the cover of a wellness catalog. In fact, the best ones rarely do. This season is about warmth, real nourishment, slow living, and taking small steps that help you feel more like a human and less like a holiday decoration still plugged in after New Year’s Eve.
Warm Up from the Inside Out The winter detox begins with one 40 | LANTANA LIVING

Rest Like It’s Your Job If summer is all about squeezing every last drop of sunlight into overbooked days, winter is about reclaiming rest like the priceless resource it is. Nature already slows down this time of year — trees go bare, animals hibernate, and even the sun seems to call it quits by early evening. Consider this your permission to follow suit. Prioritize sleep, take slower mornings when you can, and sprinkle in small rituals that calm the mind. Five minutes of meditation, an afternoon stretch, or journaling by lamplight can all do wonders. Think of rest as your body’s daily “software update.” If you skip too many, things will start glitching — your focus, your patience, and possibly your waistband after all those peppermint bark samples. overload. Even a weekend “tech-light”
Nothing says “fresh start” like a satisfying winter declutter — whether it’s your closet, your pantry, your inbox, or that one kitchen drawer where mismatched Tupperware lids gather to gossip. Clearing physical space creates mental space, and mental space creates calm. Put on some music, light a candle, and let the decluttering begin. If you’re feeling ambitious, try the “onebag challenge”: fill just one bag with items to donate or toss. It’s amazing how much lighter a single bag can make your entire home — and your mind — feel.
Make Movement Cozy and Fun The winter detox is not the season for punishment workouts or sweating under fluorescent gym lights while silently wondering how everyone else already looks mid-July toned. Instead, think gentle, joyfully convenient movement such as morning stretches, a neighborhood walk bundled up like an adorable marshmallow, a low-impact at-home yoga video, or dancing in your living room to your favorite “I’m starting over” playlist.

calmer, and more present.
Reflect, Reset, and Reimagine Finally, no winter detox is complete with-

something warm, settle into your favorite
chair, and think about what kind of energy you want to carry into the new year. What wants after December’s parade of sugar and charcuterie.

restoration. It’s a chance to listen to your body, nurture your mind, and step into
the new year feeling refreshed, grounded, And if all else fails, at least you decluttered that Tupperware drawer.
The key here is consistent, enjoyable movement — the kind that boosts your mood and sends endorphins through your system like tiny cheerleaders with glittery pom-poms.
Nourish Yourself Deliciously After weeks of feasting, sampling, and “just one more cookie because it’s the holidays,” your body will love a reset rooted in whole, colorful foods. Think warm soups, roasted winter veggies, hearty grain bowls, citrus fruits, herbal spices, and foods that feel grounding and energizing. This isn’t about dieting. It’s about giving your body what it actually

e are inching closer to Christmas, which means the calendar will soon flip to the New Year, and everyone will break out those pie-in-the-sky resolutions. Sadly, very few of us will follow through.
Wow. Talk about a Debbie-Downer statement to usher in 2026, right? But you and your friends here at Murray Media all know it to be true. While New Year’s resolutions are a great way to make a positive change in your life, whether it’s finally getting organized, losing a few extra pounds before next summer, quitting smoking, or taking the plunge and starting a new business, most reputable statistics show that 92 percent of all resolutions will fail by February. That means only eight percent of us will attain whatever goal it is we set. To make sure your New Year’s Resolutions stick, here are six tips to follow to make the most out of the rest of this year and beyond.
| ISSUE 12 | DEC 19 - JAN 16, 2026
LiveLocalMagazines.com
NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS ARE A GREAT WAY TO MAKE A POSITIVE CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE DON’T GET TOO LOFTY WITH YOUR GOALS INITIALLY You may want a “sky is the limit” mentality in 2026, and we are in no position to tell you differently. But mentally, it’s easier to hit goals and stick with them longer if they are smaller at first. For example, instead of focusing on the big target of losing 100 pounds, start with the first 25-pound mark. As you get closer to hitting that first target, then get more adventurous. Sometimes, this road merely begins by being more active today than you were yesterday. WRITE YOUR GOALS DOWN Writing your goals down helps make them real, which leads to accountability. But don’t just write them down and stick them in the bottom of your purse or in a junk drawer – put them on the corner of your desk at work or pin them to the front of your refrigerator door with a magnet. Seeing your goals every day keeps them top of mind and keeps you motivated.
FIND AN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER
Finding that one person who will hold you accountable every step of the way, no matter what

New New Mindset Year,
Ask The Expert
FITNESS
Y
by Jesse J. Leyva, Owner of Outlaw Fitcamp
ou’ve probably heard the sobering statistic that 80% of people who set New Year’s resolutions don’t keep them. But that also means that 20% — 2 out of every 10 — do. If
you’re ready to make a change in your lifestyle, a new year is the natural time to start.
After you set your goals, the work to make them happen can
begin. It can be done if you make some important changes. By
adopting these mindset changes, you can have a healthier and happier 2026.
1) MAKE A MINDSET CHANGE
At Outlaw FitCamp, we emphasize the importance of know-
ing the WHY of your fitness goals. Do you want to look better? Improve a health condition? Keep up better with your kids or grandkids? Compete in a race?
Whatever your reasons for wanting to get more fit, you have to keep the “why” in mind as you work toward your goal. If your “why” isn’t a strong
enough desire to motivate you to do the hard work, you won’t succeed. The WHY makes all the difference!
2) PRIORITIZE YOUR SPENDING
Be honest. How much did you spend at
Starbucks last year? Or your favorite spot? If don’t hire a personal trainer because you
4) CHANGE YOUR HABITS

Plan Ahead: Your Ultimate Guide TO SPRING BREAK 2026
48 | LANTANA LIVING
| ISSUE 12 | DEC 19 - JAN 16, 2026
by Madison Reed
LiveLocalMagazines.com
Spring break
is the perfect time to hit pause on the daily grind and make memories with family. But the secret to a smooth, fun, and budget-friendly getaway? Plan early. Booking 3–4 months ahead—in other words, RIGHT NOW—is ideal for snagging the best accommodations, flights, and experiences. Waiting too long can limit choices, and prices soar as families lock in plans. Whether your family prefers a road trip to save money or a luxurious escape, we’ve rounded up the best destinations for mid-March 2026, from budget-friendly drives to splurge-worthy vacations.
BUDGET-FRIENDLY ROAD TRIPS (Drive and Save) 1. HILL COUNTRY, TEXAS
Just a few hours from North Texas, the Hill Country is a hidden gem. Stay in a cozy cabin or rental near Fredericksburg or Wimberley. Enjoy scenic hikes, local vineyards, and spring wildflowers. It’s perfect for families who love outdoor adventures without the airfare price tag. 2. NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA
A longer drive — but worth it! Wander the French Quarter, enjoy street music, and sample beignets. Many museums and historic sites offer free or low-cost entry, and local guesthouses provide charming, wallet-friendly accommodations. 3. OKLAHOMA CITY OR TULSA For families not looking to stray too far, both cities offer a mix of museums, zoos, and family-friendly entertainment. Staying in a vacation rental can reduce costs, and you can explore at your own pace.
MID-RANGE ADVENTURES (Mix of Drive and Fly Options) 4. SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA
Flights are reasonable if booked early, and the city offers a perfect mix of sun, sand, and culture. Explore Balboa Park, the world-famous San Diego Zoo, and sunny beaches. Vacation rentals or mid-range hotels make this a feasible family trip without breaking the bank. 5. ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA
Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville provides the best of outdoor exploration and quirky small-town charm. Hike in the Great Smoky Mountains, stroll LiveLocalMagazines.com
the vibrant downtown, and indulge in
local eats. Driving here can be scenic and economical, especially with a few overnight stops along the way.
•
Flexible travelers can sometimes snag last-minute deals, but availability will be limited.
PLACES TO AVOID
SPLURGE-WORTHY ESCAPES (Fly and Indulge) 6. CARIBBEAN CRUISE FROM FLORIDA
Nothing says “spring break splurge” like a cruise. Mid-March itineraries from Miami or Port Canaveral offer warm beaches,
on-board entertainment, and excursions
for the whole family. Booking early secures the best cabins and allows for extra perks. 7. MAUI, HAWAII
If your budget allows, Maui is paradise in
mid-March. Gorgeous beaches, snorkeling adventures, and scenic drives along the
Hana Highway are fun for the whole family. Luxury resorts often include kid-friendly activities and spa options for parents. 8. NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK
For families who love culture, history, and
entertainment, NYC is a dream. Broadway shows, museums, Central Park, and iconic
landmarks keep everyone engaged. While flights and hotels can be pricey, planning
ahead opens up family-friendly packages that balance cost and comfort.
TIPS FOR SPRING BREAK PLANNING
•
Book flights 2–4 months in advance
•
Reserve accommodations 3–6 months
Popular Florida Beaches (South Beach, Miami) Overcrowded and expensive during mid-March. Las Vegas Not ideal for younger kids and resorts are pricey. Theme Parks on Peak Weekend Disney World, Universal, and similar parks get jam-packed during spring break; consider visiting in early March or late April instead. Ski Resorts in Decline Some smaller ski towns may have already closed lifts by mid-March, leaving limited snow options.
Spring break 2026 doesn’t have to be stressful or expensive. With a little planning and the right destination, your family can enjoy sun, culture, adventure, or just a relaxing retreat. Whether it’s a scenic road trip, a mid-range adventure, or a luxury splurge, your perfect escape is just waiting to be booked.

Then, hand off your gift and thank them for inviting you. Some classic party host gifts include a nice bottle of

The Italian name for these lamb chops is “scottadito” which means “scorches the finger.” Quite literally, they are so tempting and so delicious that you can’t wait to pick them up to eat them, even when they are piping hot! Ask your butcher for 3 racks of lamb and have them frenched and cut into chops or lollipops. Then be sure to trim all but a very thin layer of fat. We absolutely love grilled lamb lollipops, but a good hot cast-iron skillet works perfectly, too. They only need a total of about 5 minutes on the heat to cook to a perfect medium temperature.
Ingredients
Instructions
Coarse sea salt and freshly ground pepper or Kosher salt
2. In a small bowl, combine the garlic, rosemary, thyme, and salt. Add the oil and whisk until combined.
3 racks lamb frenched, cut into chops, and trimmed of all but thin layer of fat
3 cloves garlic minced 1 tablespoon rosemary fresh, chopped 1 tablespoon thyme fresh, chopped ¼ cup olive oil 1 lemon cut into wedges
1. Liberally sprinkle the chops with salt and pepper.
3. Pour the marinade over the chops and turn to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for at least 2 hours, or overnight. 4. Heat a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat, or turn your grill on medium-high heat for direct heat grilling. 5. Sear the chops (in batches if using a hot skillet) until browned on both sides, about a total of 4 to 5 minutes for medium to medium-rare. 6. Transfer to a platter and squeeze a lemon wedge over the top. Sprinkle with a little more sea salt, if desired. Serve at once.

EXCEPTIONAL CARE
EXCELLENCE & WE’RE COMMITTED TO
GLOW through the
COLD WINTER HYDRATION MATTERS MORE THAN YOU THINK
by Madison Reed
C
old weather may feel refreshing after a sweltering Texas summer, but your skin and hair don’t always share the enthusiasm. Winter air is naturally drier, indoor heaters suck even more moisture from the environment, and before you know it, your once-glowy skin and smooth strands start feeling dull, tight, and thirsty. That’s why winter hydration is less about guzzling gallons of water (though that helps!) and more about smart, consistent moisture habits.
Hair suffers a similar fate — cuticles lift, frizz creeps in, and breakage becomes all too common.
When temperatures drop, the skin’s natural lipid barrier weakens, making it harder to retain hydration. The result? Flakiness, irritation, and that “my face suddenly feels two sizes too small” sensation.
For hair, weekly deep-conditioning masks, leave-in treatments, and oils such as argan or jojoba restore softness and guard against the harsh, dry air.
While drinking water remains a cornerstone of wellness, true winter radiance comes from hydrating inside and out. Start by swapping your lightweight summer moisturizer for a richer, ceramide-packed cream that locks in moisture. Hyaluronic acid serums also shine this time of year, pulling water into the skin and keeping it there.
Don’t overlook environmental helpers either. A simple humidifier can transform your home into a hydration haven, giving both hair and skin the moisture they desperately crave. Shorter, lukewarm showers (we know — hard to give up!) prevent excess dryness, and silk pillowcases cut down on overnight friction that can lead to frizz and irritation. Finally, nourish your glow from within. Foods rich in healthy fats — think avocados, salmon, walnuts, and olive oil — help reinforce skin and hair health at the cellular level. Winter may be dry, but your hair and skin don’t have to be. With the right habits, you can stay soft, smooth, and glowing straight through spring.
