A

s we conclude the 2025–2026 school year, I am filled with immense pride in the progress, accomplishments, and resilience demonstrated across Gainesville ISD. This year reflects not only strong outcomes, but also the meaningful growth that occurs when a community commits to doing what is best for students.

Our continued focus on delivering high quality instruction and implementing strong curricular programs has resulted in notable academic gains in our classrooms. These efforts matter because they ensure every student is building the skills and knowledge needed for success beyond GISD. Equally important, our students have excelled outside the classroom in Band, Visual Arts, Choir, Ag Science, and Athletics demonstrating the value of a well rounded education that cultivates creativity, discipline, and leadership.

We have seen increased participation and success in UIL Academics, Athletics, and Fine Arts, along with more students earning dual credit, industry-based certifications, and even associate degrees through North Central Texas College. These milestones represent more than numbers; they reflect expanded opportunities and a stronger foundation for future success.

This year has also reinforced an important truth: resilience defines Leopard Nation. Through challenges and change, our students, staff, and families remained focused, adaptable, and committed to excellence. This “all hands on deck” approach continues to move our district forward and ensures we are prepared to meet the ever changing demands of public education.

Our progress would not be possible without the unwavering support of our community partners. Together, we serve nearly 3,100 students, and that partnership sends a clear and powerful message that education MATTERS. Research consistently shows that when families and schools work together, students perform better academically, attend more regularly, and develop greater confidence and motivation. Your engagement strengthens our schools and helps us meet the diverse needs of every learner.

We also remain committed to investing in our future. Construction and renovation projects including the near completion of Gainesville Junior High improvements and the upcoming Phase 1 projects at Edison Elementary, Chalmers Elementary, and the Intermediate campus represent intentional steps to provide safe, modern, and supportive learning environments for our students.

As we look ahead, we continue initiatives like our expanded Summer Reading Program for PK–5 students, encouraging at least 20 minutes of daily reading to keep minds engaged and skills sharp. These efforts reinforce that learning does not stop when the school year ends.

It is truly an honor to lead this great district. GISD is a place where you matter, you belong, and you are supported every step of the way. Together, we will continue to build on this year’s success and move toward an even brighter future.

Emma Mills, our GHS Class of 2026 Valedictorian, has demonstrated exceptional dedication and leadership during her time at GHS. As one of the vice presidents of the National Honor Society and a member of the Athletic Leadership Council, she has balanced her academic commitments with her passion for soccer and participation in UIL Academics. This fall, she plans to attend Sterling College, where she will major in Health Science with a focus on Pre-Physical Therapy, aspiring to become a licensed physical therapist.

Jackson has made a remarkable impact during his time at GHS, where he received his Associate’s Degree through NCTC as part of the collegiate academy. He has excelled in various leadership roles, serving as the President of both the GHS chapter of the National Honor Society and the Athletic Leadership Council. Additionally, he founded and leads the Leopards for Christ Bible study group.

Jackson played varsity football, served as captain, and participated in wrestling, track and field, golf, baseball, and even marching band and percussion ensembles. This fall, he will be attending Harding University, where he plans to major in Bible and Ministry, with aspirations of becoming a minister or working in the family business of selling furniture and appliances.

NCTC Dual Credit Collegiate Academy

G

ainesville ISD is proud to partner with North Central Texas College to offer a wide variety of dual credit options, including academic and career and technical courses. Dual Credit is an opportunity for 9th - 12th grade students to earn college credit and high school credit simultaneously. In this traditional method, all dual credit students pay reduced tuition which is set by NCTC, and if a student qualifies for free and reduced lunch, this cost is reduced to zero.

Collegiate Academy Students who choose the academic dual credit route have several options for taking college courses. The first option is to earn an Associate degree, which requires completion of 60 college credit hours and beginning dual credit courses in 9th grade. The second option consists of earning 42 college credit hours to be considered “core complete”, which enables the student to have a block of courses that can be transferred to any state university in Texas. The advantage of both of these options is that students can enter a university with a substantial amount of their bachelor’s degree complete. The third option is for students to enroll in dual credit courses later in high school, typically earning between 3 and 30 college hours. All of these options give the student a jump start on their college education at a fraction of the cost.

The GHS Class of 2026 had four students who earned an Associate degree: Cora Gardner, Ray Glancy, Jackson Otts, and Jocelyn Victorio. In addition, Christian Little completed all core classes and is graduating core complete.

Technical Route Students who choose the technical route as juniors have the

potential to earn industry certification before graduation, allowing them to enter the workforce immediately after high school.

These hands-on programs give our students the experience and confidence needed to be successful in their chosen career. If they attend part-time during the fall and spring semesters, they may graduate with a certificate in two years.

The Class of 2026 included three students who obtained a cosmetology certificate, which required four semesters in the program. Those students are Allannah Negrete, Rian Medford, and Jasmine Ponce.

In addition, 15 students earned a Level 1 welding certificate.

A Level 1 certificate requires 15-42 credit hours and is usually completed in one to three semesters. The Welding certification students are Brandon Albineda, Camila Buentello, Marilin Castillo, Jaxon Crawford, Christopher Garcia, Dylan Gomez, Cesar Huerta, Xavier Medina, Cesar Mejia, Zamarripa, Jayden Pinales, Julien Quinones, Jonathan Solis, Melany Torres, Melissa Torres, and Jose Valdez.

Leopard Promise Program The Collegiate Academy has been successful in GISD for many years, and in the 2024-2025 school year, GISD began the Leopard Promise program. The difference from the previously stated Collegiate Academy is that GISD pays for 100% of the tuition and fees for all of their dual credit classes. Students that meet the minimum grade level requirements in 8th grade are recommended for application to the program. The application includes an essay, interview, and TSI testing. Every year, 30 students are accepted into the Leopard Promise program.

BUILDING THE FUTURE

O

n May 3, 2025, Gainesville voters made a powerful investment in the future of local students, approving the $58.8 million GISD Bond Election. With community support and months of thoughtful planning already in place, Gainesville ISD wasted no time turning vision into action.

Today, that investment is already taking shape across the district, bringing enhanced safety, expanded learning spaces, and modernized facilities designed to support both current students and generations to come.

Early Success at Gainesville Junior High The first visible transformation came at Gainesville Junior High, where a series of key renovations were completed in May 2026. Students and staff will return this fall to a refreshed campus featuring a new main entryway with a secure vestibule, an expanded and renovated library, upgraded roofing and HVAC systems, and improved exterior walkways.

The finishing touch will be the new library furnishings, which are currently in the works, ensuring the space is functional and welcoming when students walk through the doors in August.

Behind the scenes, the district’s Bond Oversight Committee, in partnership with district leaders and WRA Architects, continues to monitor progress, ensuring projects stay aligned with budget, timeline, and community expectations.

Phase 1: Expanding Opportunity Across Campuses With early projects complete, GISD moved quickly into Phase 1 of the bond, launching major construction efforts in June 2026 at Edison Elementary, Chalmers Elementary, and Gainesville Intermediate.

Each campus will receive an eight-classroom addition, creating space for growing enrollment and expanded academic programs.

However, these projects reflect a district-wide commitment to safety, innovation, and student-centered design.

At Edison Elementary, the improvements are especially transformative. The current gymnasium will be converted into an expanded cafeteria, while a brand-new gymnasium, designed to also function as a storm shelter, will be constructed. In addition, the campus library will be modernized, and a secure vestibule will be added to enhance campus safety.

At Chalmers Elementary and Gainesville Intermediate, the new classroom additions will also double as storm shelters, reinforcing the district’s focus on protecting students during severe weather events. All construction is being carefully phased to minimize disruptions to daily instruction. These projects are expected to be completed by December 2027.

Looking Ahead: Phase 2 and Junior High Upgrades Momentum will continue in December 2026 as Phase 2 begins, bringing additional upgrades to Gainesville Junior High.

Planned improvements include expanded cafeteria space, comprehensive roof and HVAC replacements, and the enclosure of “F” Hall, which will further enhance both functionality and comfort for students and staff.

A New Chapter at GHS Perhaps the most exciting transformation is on the horizon at Gainesville High School, where a new Career and Technical Education (CTE) wing is set to redefine opportunities for students.

This innovative addition will feature a flexible black box theatre for fine arts, designed to double as a storm shelter, alongside a state-of-the-art culinary arts kitchen, modern health science classrooms, and a new 3-D art lab. Together, these spaces will support hands-on, real-world learning experiences that prepare students for both college and career pathways.

Construction is expected to begin in December 2026, with completion projected for June 2028. Once complete, the new wing will not only enhance CTE programming but also free up space in the existing building, creating even more opportunities for students across the campus.

A Community Investment That Lasts From upgraded safety features to expanded academic spaces, every project reflects the community’s shared commitment to student success. The 2025 bond is more than a construction plan, it’s a promise to provide safe, modern, and inspiring learning environments for every Gainesville ISD student.

As construction continues and campuses evolve, one thing remains constant: the pride and partnership of a community working together to build a stronger future.

TEACHER INCENTIVE

ALLOTMENT What is TIA? The Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) was created to recognize and reward outstanding teachers by providing a pathway to higher pay, including the opportunity to earn a six-figure salary. Unlike short-term grant programs, TIA provides ongoing funding to districts through approved local systems that identify highly effective teachers using measures such as student growth and classroom observations.

GISD’s path to TIA Gainesville ISD began investigating the benefits of Teacher Incentive Allotment during the 24-25 school year. We completed the application in April of 2025 to include our first cohort of teachers which included Grades 4, 5 and 6 Math and Reading teachers. Our application was approved in July of 2025 and the 2025-26 school year became our data capture year.

During this year our district conducted calibration exercises, analyzed data, administered student growth measures, and coordinated among departments to monitor teacher performance data throughout the year. By the end of the Data Capture Year, our district has appraised and collected student growth data for all teachers in TIA-eligible assignments. This data will

then be used to determine which teachers qualify for designation for the 2026-27 school year.

How does TIA benefit districts?

This additional funding allows districts to reward and retain excellent teachers, recruit strong educators, and encourage teachers to serve in high-needs schools and hard-to-fill positions. TIA is designed to support great teachers in staying in the classroom while improving student success.

The goal of TIA is to help districts create fair and sustainable compensation systems that recognize teacher effectiveness across all grade levels and subjects.

These systems focus on teacher growth, student achievement, strong instructional practices, recruitment, and retention, while helping make the teaching profession more attractive and rewarding.

How does TIA benefit teachers?

The Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) gives teachers an accessible pathway to earning a higher income while remaining in the classroom, allowing them to make a greater difference in the lives of our students. TIA elevates the teaching profession and allows districts to celebrate their top performing teachers with compensation and recognition through teacher designations. Once a teacher is designated, they may generate an annual allotment for their employing school district based on their campus of employment for five continuous years.

The current rates for Gainesville ISD campuses are as follows: ● Recognized Designation: $6,693 - $7,756 ● Exemplary Designation: $13,385 - $15,512 ● Master Designation: $24,309 - $27,853

GISD’s Expansion Opportunities A district can apply for an expansion/ modification every April. GISD has submitted an expansion application to include K-8 Reading and Math teachers for the next cohort of eligible teachers. If the application is approved, the 2026-2027 school year will be the data collection year for the second cohort.

We are thrilled to have the Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) available to our teachers! This initiative not only rewards outstanding educators but also enhances our commitment to fostering a supportive and effective teaching environment. We look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on our dedicated staff and schools!

Shining Stars BANQUET

T

he Gainesville ISD Education Foundation proudly celebrated the top 10% of the GHS Class of 2026 during the prestigious Shining Stars Banquet. At this memorable event, each Shining Star student had the opportunity to honor a teacher from their time at GISD, designating them as their Distinguished Educator.

As part of the evening's festivities, students and educators exchanged heartfelt letters of gratitude. These letters were featured in the program and shared aloud, highlighting the profound impact they have had on each other’s lives.

The GEF provided a delightful meal for all attendees and music from the GHS Jazz Band. The Foundation also generously gifted each scholar a $250 scholarship, an engraved plaque, and a college-themed shirt in recognition of their remarkable academic achievements.

In addition to the annual Shining Stars banquet in the spring, the Foundation also awards Innovative Teaching Grants to teachers through a competitive application process in the fall.

To date, an impressive total of $620,063 has been distributed back into classrooms to enhance educational opportunities for GISD students.

Winter Wonderland Gala

Gainesville ISD Education Foundation Celebrates Successful Second Annual Winter Wonderland Gala

T

he Gainesville ISD Education Foundation is thrilled to anan nounce the remarkable success of its Second Annual Winter Wonderland Gala, held on February 7, 2026, at the GainesGaines ville Civic Center. This year, we welcomed an amazing 185 guests and are excitedly anticipating even more attendees for next year’s event.

The evening was filled with entertainment, delicious dining, and a spirited silent auction that captivated our community. Guests enjoyed an energetic performance by J’s Dueling Pianos, creating an atmosphere brimming with music, laughter, and plenty of dancing.

“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who attended, donated, and participated in this year's gala,” said Arin Lane, Executive Director of the Gainesville ISD Education Foundation. “The enthusiasm and support from our community has been heartwarming, and we are excited to see the impact of our donors' efforts.”

The Winter Wonderland Gala was not only a celebration of the foundation's achievements but also a stepping stone for an even more spectacular event next year. “We're already planning next year's gala, and we can’t wait to show you the community our new theme we have planned and to make it even bigger and better,” Lane added.

Tickets for next year's gala will be available to all community memmem bers, and we encourage everyone to join in celebrating education and community spirit.

GISD Robotics

Continues to Grow, Compete, & Inspire

G

ainesville ISD robotics programs completed their second year of VEX competition,

with teams at Gainesville Intermediate (GIS), Gainesville Junior High (GJHS), and Gainesville High School (GHS) competing against districts across the region. GIS and GJHS teams participated in VEX IQ competitions, while GHS students advanced to V5 robotics, a more complex level of engineering and design.

Students begin each season on September 1, building and refining their robots through March while learning the fundamentals of engineering, teamwork, and problem-solving.

At GIS, coach Mr. Donicio Trujillo, who is also the campus music teacher, brings energy and encouragement to every practice. His coaching focuses on reflection and growth, as teams review each match to celebrate successes and identify areas for improvement.

GIS fielded six teams of 5th and 6th graders this year, competing in Sulphur Springs and Garland. At the Sulphur Springs ISD TYRA VEX IQ Robotics Competi-

tion, the Decepticons team advanced to the finals and earned a 6th-place finish in one competition.

At their second competition in Garland, all teams scored points and modified and repaired their robots in between matches, which makes this an important part of learning the design and engineering process.

At GJHS, Ms. Anita DeCou, an 8th grade science teacher, continues to build a strong foundation for the program.

Through consistent practices and a focus on the engineering design process, students competed in Coppell at the Mix & Match VEX IQ Competition, gaining valuable experience against both elementary and middle school teams.

GIS and GJHS teams also participated in a district-wide scrimmage, allowing students to practice new game rules and earn recognition for top performances.

At GHS, Mr. Jase Felton led students in the district’s first year of VEX V5 Robotics I, which is part of a new CTE engineering pathway. Three teams competed at the first competition of the year in Iowa Park, with all teams successfully scoring points.

At their second event, one team advanced to the finals. Plans are already in place to expand the program with Robotics II in 2026–2027.

Looking ahead, GISD will further expand STEM opportunities by joining the federally funded BEST Robotics program at Grayson College. The district will also continue VEX competitions for a third year, strengthening partnerships with neighboring districts to increase collaboration and scrimmage opportunities.

Community members will have the chance to see these programs in action, as GISD plans to host both VEX IQ and VEX V5 competitions during the 2026– 2027 school year. Together, these experiences highlight GISD’s commitment to hands-on learning and preparing students for future careers in STEM through innovation, teamwork, and real-world application.

STEAM Night

STEAM, an acronym for science,

technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics, represents a critical focus area in education. Across our region, STEAM-focused events are gaining momentum as the majority of future careers in Texas increasingly rely on these skill sets. As a result, it is essential to provide students with meaningful exposure to hands-on, critical thinking experiences that engage them in diverse STEAM learning opportunities now more than ever.

The Bilingual STEAM Night held this spring was an outstanding success, drawing more than 300 attendees. This was one of the highest turnouts in the four-year history of STEAM events at GISD. The primary goal of this event was to create an inclusive, bilingual experience for all participating families, ensuring accessibility and engagement across our diverse community.

The event, led by Jessica Cook, was a success thanks to the dedicated efforts of numerous volunteers from the Curriculum and Instruction department. In addition, students from GHS, including members of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Culinary Arts program, and CTE Education program, played a vital role in fostering meaningful, hands-on STEM learning experiences.

All stations included Spanish and English directions to support participation. A highlight of the evening was a chemistry station where students created glow-inthe-dark bouncy balls. Guests also enjoyed the “Creepy Critters” exhibit, featuring over 40 reptiles, along with interactive technology from Texoma Workforce Solutions, including 3D goggles and a LumoPlay system—both offering engaging, hands-on learning experiences.

Students explored key concepts in chemistry, biology, engineering, and mathematics through a wide range of hands-on activities, including: • Constructing a model skeleton arm with a simulated broken bone and learning proper bandaging techniques • Creating “blood in a jar” to better understand blood components and their proportions • Designing and racing water rafts alongside Cub Scout Pack #143 • Crafting felt art animals using wet felting techniques and cookie cutters • Investigating magnetism and building with magnetic blocks • Planting and taking home a potted cactus • Operating robotic arms provided by CTE Robotics students • Driving robots designed and built by GHS CTE Robotics students

• Receiving a complimentary science book from Denton County’s “Book Club for Kids” • Learning about bee engineering with the Denton County Master Gardeners • Participating in a physics activity hosted by the Boys and Girls Club • Making fresh butter with the Texas Farm Bureau Our GISD Discovery Kitchens team, alongside two Culinary Arts students, also provided an exceptional culinary experience. Families had the opportunity to create customizable “Asian bowls,” choosing between beef bulgogi or chicken teriyaki, along with a variety of vegetables and house-made sauces. In celebration of April Fool’s Day, the dessert featured a cleverly designed sugar cookie “pizza,” topped with red yogurt icing, shaved white chocolate, and M&Ms. The Chartwells K12 Child Nutrition department truly exceeded expectations in delivering a memorable and engaging experience for the GISD community.

THEATER: RESILIENCE AND GROWTH ON VISUAL ARTS: GAINESVILLE LEOPARD ARTS CONTINUE TO DOMINATE In its second year as a District of Distinction, Gainesville ISD’s visual arts program continues to excel statewide. With professional tools, visiting artists, and real-world art experiences, students are developing both creativity and technical skill.

Gainesville Leopard Arts is gaining recognition, with sixth grader Sophia Hernandez selected to exhibit at the Bullock Texas State History Museum and sophomore Amiah Padron earning a Visual Art State Exhibition (VASE) State Gold Medal and competing as a finalist for a 3D scholarship.

Participation in VASE has nearly tripled since 2023, growing to 52 entries from 30 students, and the results this year were outstanding. Every participating student earned recognition, which included eight regional gold medals and four silver medals.

This growth and success highlight Gainesville as an emerging hub for young visual artists in North Texas.

DISPLAY The Gainesville Junior High Theater program is proving its strength with a bold production that earned its highest One-Act Play ranking in years. This year, the troupe tackled one of the most rigorous and demanding productions in the circuit, navigating complex themes with a maturity that set them apart from their peers. Student interest is surging, with enrollment for next year already doubling.

At the high school level, under the leadership of Rachel Tillotson, the program delivered a season of polished, impactful performances. Joselyn Gutierrez earned All Star Cast honors, and Blake Britain was named Outstanding Technician. Tillotson also received statewide recognition, serving on the UIL State OneAct Play Honor Crew. With momentum building and the return of the fall musical ahead, the stage is set for a breakout year.

BAND: A SEASON OF HISTORIC ACHIEVEMENTS FOR THE REDCOATS From the practice room to Texas’s biggest stages, the Gainesville Band program is raising the standard of excellence. By emphasizing both individual accountability and ensemble precision, the program has achieved remarkable growth this spring.

Students were challenged to step into the spotlight through solo performance, strengthening their technical skills and confidence. This focus paid off with superior ratings for Intermediate and Junior High bands, and a select group of high school musicians advancing to represent GISD at the Texas State Solo & Ensemble Contest in Austin.

We are proud to celebrate these elite performers who advanced to the state level: State Soloists: William Drew (flute), Miranda Eudy (flute), Autumn Farr-Overstreet (clarinet), Andres Costilla (horn), Jazmin Huerta (trombone), and Logan Davis (tuba).

State Ensembles: Phoenix Kemp, Gerardo Torres, and Karson Tressler; Andres Costilla, Jazmin Huerta, and Jarek Marin; Abel Aguilera, Destiny Cordona, and Rithika Chitoor Success at UIL Concert and Sightreading is built over time, and this year marked historic progress for Gainesville ISD bands. Preparation began at the Pioneer Wind Festival in February and continued with strong growth across all levels, including a polished debut of new junior high uniforms. That hard work culminated in Sweepstakes Awards for both the Varsity Junior High and High School bands.

Closing the year, the Gainesville High School Band performed at the renowned Meyerson Symphony Center, earning straight Superior ratings and the distinguished title of “Outstanding Performance of the Day,” reinforcing the Redcoat Band’s reputation for excellence.

Starting Note & the First Sketch: BUILDING THE FOUNDATION IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Artistic growth in Gainesville ISD begins at the elementary level, where students build foundational skills in visual arts and music that support creativity, discipline, and critical thinking.

Students also gain early competitive experience. Fifth graders competed at TEAM, with several earning exemplary scores, while sixth graders Ava Mendez and Jackson Vineyard earned the highest ratings at the district’s first Jr. VASE appearance.

These early successes highlight the strong talent pipeline developing in Gainesville’s fine arts programs.

CHOIR: HARMONY TAKES CENTER STAGE The Gainesville Choir program is gaining momentum with measurable growth in both individual and ensemble performance. This spring, 21 high school students competed at region, with Catherine Rodriguez and Tyler White advancing to the State Solo & Ensemble Contest and earning medals.

Across ensembles, students are building confidence and consistency. Under the leadership of Meghan Reeves, the Junior high choirs earned their highest UIL scores in years, while the high school choir, led by Kevin Beall, posted its strongest rating in three years earning an "Excellent" rating from judges.

Sixth-grade vocalists also excelled at SUNfest, earning superior and excellent ratings in their first competition. The year culminated in a spring concert attended by over 450 community members, and enrollment for next year has doubled—signaling a major turning point for the program.

LEOPARD ATHLETICS Gainesville High School Athletics celebrated a year defined by accomplishment, growth, and pride, as student-athletes excelled across multiple sports both on and off the field.

The boys team featured several top performers, including Offensive MVP Erick Ramirez and Defensive Midfielder of the Year Xavier Gonzalez. Choco Leon earned Newcomer of the Year, while Mason Molina was named Freshman of the Year. Depth and talent were evident, with multiple athletes earning All-District recognition. First Team selections included Josue Gutierrez, Nico Rico, Ethan Torres, Diego Rodriguez, and Zay Cervantez. Second Team selections were Cesar Mejia, Alex Gomez, Ayden Cancino, Daniel Valdez, and Juve Castillo. Earning Honorable Mention were Christian Cruz, Israel Coronado, Jayden Cruz, and Darien Salazar.

On the girls side, Reese Dunn earned Co-Defensive Newcomer of the Year honors along with First Team All-District recognition. She was joined by a strong group of teammates earning district accolades, reflecting the team’s balance and dedication.

First Team selections were Isabel Delarosa, Maya Torres, and Maribel Vergara. Second Team selections were Annie Larraga, Ashley Victorio, Sarai Meza, and Mimi Gonzalez.

Earning Honorable Mention were Hazel Becerra and Janely Vasquez.

In the classroom, the Lady Leopards shined as well. Twenty players earned Academic All-District honors, while seniors Emma Mills, Katy Mills, Jocelyn Victorio, Maya Torres, Alondra Rojas, Abigail Cardenas, Yasmin Casillas, and Britzi Gomez were each recognized at the state level for outstanding academic achievement, demonstrating excellence in every arena.

The future remains bright for both soccer programs, as the JV boys captured the District Championship and the JV girls finished as District Runner-Up.

SIGNINGS This spring, six standout athletes took the next step in their athletic journeys during GHS signing days. Emma Mills will continue her soccer career at Sterling College, while Cora Gardner will cheer at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith. On the football field, Julien Quinones (Midwestern State University), Payton Mathews (Hendrix College), and Bugg Kemp (East Central University) all secured collegiate opportunities. Jamal Davis will extend his basketball career at Arlington Baptist University. These signings represent not only individual success but also the strength of Gainesville’s athletic programs.

POWER LIFTING Addysan Pickett led the powerlifting program with a remarkable season, consistently breaking records and setting new personal bests. Her efforts, along with those of Isabella Ruiz, Isaac Martinez, and Jasper Hernandez, earned regional qualifications and showcased the program’s growing strength.

The girls wrestling team made school history this year, capturing the Fort Worth Invitational team title, which was the first tournament victory in the three-year program history. Their success marks a significant milestone and signals continued growth.

WRESTLING

Several athletes advanced to regionals, including Luis Munoz, who fought his way to the quarterfinals, highlighting the team’s competitiveness and determination. Also competing at Regionals were Jonathan Sanchez and Alexandria Wynkoop.

SOFTBALL The Lady Leopards softball team demonstrated both athletic success and academic excellence.

Addysan Pickett anchored the team as a First Team All-District catcher, while outfielder Eva Ekstrand and pitcher Maliah Diaz earned Second Team. Honorable Mention honors went to shortstop Raegan Neu and first base Savannah Roessler.

In the classroom, ten athletes were named Academic All-District, and Pickett, Roessler, and Neu achieved Academic All-State recognition, continuing a proud tradition of scholar-athletes.

BASKETBALL

Leopard basketball continued to build momentum this season with strong individual honors and academic accomplishments.

Jayden Peters earned All-Defense honors, while Bugg Kemp and Ray Glancy were named First Team All-District.

Jamal Davis and Cyrus Moster-Lawry added Second Team recognition. Honorable Mention were Julien Quinones, TJ Solesbee, Jermaine Turner. Off the court, eight players achieved Academic All-District, and seniors Glancy, Davis Pouncil, and Solesbee earned the prestigious THSCA Academic All-State distinction.

For the Lady Leopards, Lily Allen led the way with Second Team All-District honors, while Makenli Royal, Abreanna Davis, and Sophia Huerta earned honorable mention, pointing to a promising future. In addition, eight student athletes earned Academic All-District.

BASEBALL The Leopard baseball team celebrated both individual achievements and a once-in-a-lifetime experience this season. Several players earned Second Team All-District Honors, including infielders Jeffrey Dempsey, Mario Garcia, and RJ Walker, outfielders Nate Yemey and Noah Long, and utility player Hayden Nichols. Earning honorable mention were Andrew Lopez and Payton Mathews.

The team’s appearance at Globe Life Field in March provided a memorable opportunity to compete on a major league stage, an experience that will stay with players and families for years to come.

From championship milestones to academic honors and collegiate signings, Leopard athletes are proving that success extends far beyond the scoreboard.

Developing Future Health Care T he Health Science program reaches a demographic of students who want to pursue an occupation in the high-demand medical field. This program also offers certifications which will allow students to enter the workforce immediately after graduation and while also pursuing a degree.

The Health Science Pathway at Gainesville High School involves four courses that students begin their Freshman year and finish with a double-block their Senior year. The courses offered are Principles of Health Science, Health Science Theory, Medical Terminology (PCT), and Practicum of Health Science (CMA). There are more than 150 students enrolled in the Health Science pathway each year. Brandi Dunn, BSN-RN, and Lisa Lawson,RN, are both full-time teachers at GHS. Throughout these courses, students build their knowledge of patient assessment, vital signs, first aid, CPR, EKGs, anatomy of the human body, medication administration, injections, phlebotomy, the disease process and complications,

healthcare careers and much more! The classroom is much like a “clinical setting” with five manikins and four hospital beds, allowing students to utilize real medical equipment in the classroom setting.

Students have access in the classroom to a patient lift, wheelchair, canes, crutches, stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, thermometers, phlebotomy arms, an EKG machine, bandaging supplies, medication administration kits, and much more!

Patient Care Technician Certification The 2025-26 school year is the fifth year that the Patient Care Technician Certification (CPCT) was offered to Juniors taking the Medical Terminology course.

Doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals rely on patient care technicians to assist with the critical day-to-day care some patients require. They provide hands-on assistance to serve patients’ basic needs, which greatly impacts the lives of their patients and their patients’ families. As a patient care tech, they can provide basic patient care such as vital signs, obtain EKG readings, monitor vital signs, perform phlebotomy procedures, and provide emotional support to patients and families.

Certified Medical Assistant Certification Upon completion of the pathway their senior year, students are able to test to become a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA). This occupation offers excellent job opportunities right out of high school and also helps build students’ resumes for future Health Science careers. Medical Assistants (MAs) are critical members of healthcare teams in a variety of medical settings. As a MA, you are often the first

and last person a patient interacts with, making a lasting impact on the patient experience. MAs perform a variety of tasks such as taking patient vital signs, assisting providers with exams and procedures, administering injections or medications, performing EKGs, phlebotomy and other essential laboratory procedures, and checking patients in and out upon arrival and departure.

Since testing began in 2019, the program has produced 107 CMAs, and 15 of those certifications were earned this year: Sadie Larraga, Jorge Pedraza, Evelyn Atonal-Texas, Julianna Rivera, Mia Rodriguez, Caydence Pierce, Cheyenne Williams, Celia Reyes, Liliana Orozco, Ericka Herrera-Franco, Britzy Gomez, Evelyn Mendez, McKenzie Stone, Abrazylynn Peterson, and Abigail Cardenas.

HOSA Another opportunity for Health Science students is being a part of the GHS chapter of HOSA, Future Health Professionals.

This is the fourth year for HOSA at GHS, and the numbers and events continue to grow and thrive. HOSA members were involved in community activities throughout the year, which included hosting four blood drives which collected 224 units, performing all vital signs for the annual

Non-Clinical events were also a success at the state level. Competitors who placed in the top ten included Addisyn Putnam (Microbiology), Sadie Larraga (OSHA) and Lily Allen (Environmental Health). The Historian HOSA Happenings project (Kimberly Huerta, Abel Aguilera, Reese Dunn) also placed. At the area level, they had a record on stage as well. Sadie placed 2nd in Medical Assisting, Julianna placed 2nd in Patient Care Technician, Reese & Lily placed 2nd in Health Career Display, Hazel Becerra placed 5th in Patient Care Technician, Addisyn Putnam placed 5th in Clinical Nursing, Jasmine Alzubi placed 5th in Health Career Photography, Leslye Rodriguez placed 5th in Nutrition.

This year, our Advanced Floral Design students sold 40 subscriptions to the Flower of the Month program, an endeavor that kept them very busy and tested their creativity. Congratulations to Eva Ekstrand Brooks for designing and exhibiting the Grand Champion Floral Design Project at the 2026 Cooke County Junior Livestock Show. Thirtyeight students earned an Industry Based Certification with the Texas State Floral Association.

At the Texas FFA Convention in Fort Worth this July 2026, Natalie Medina will receive the Texas FFA Lone Star Degree, a goal she has pursued throughout high school. Daniel Lane will also be represented at the convention as a top 4 finalist in the Texas FFA Star Greenhand Placement award category. The Star Greenhand Placement will be awarded to the most outstanding first year FFA member in the state of Texas who completes a supervised Ag experience working a paid or unpaid job or internship. Daniel’s SAE project includes working part time for a lawn maintenance company.

In the Ag Mechanics pathway of our program, Daniel Lane built and exhibited a lawnmower trailer at the Cooke County Junior Livestock Show and fourteen students earned an Industry Based Certification with the American Welding Society.

A

s two of GISD’s newest graduates and recipients of this year’s Fiesta Night Scholarship, Joselyn Gutierrez and Sinay Rodriguez are demonstrating what can be achieved through hard work, determination, and the support of programs like AVID and Talent Search. As first-generation college students, they embody GISD’s commitment to supporting every Leopard, every day, both during high school and in preparation for life beyond graduation.

For Sinay, one of the most impactful moments came during an evening Talent Search session while working on scholarship applications. After completing what she thought was her most important application, she realized there were many more opportunities ahead and that success required continued effort.

With encouragement from Talent Search

staff, she gained a valuable lesson in perseverance. As Sinay reflected, “It’s important to work hard even when you believe you're done, because there is no limit to what you can achieve.”

Joselyn credits AVID and Talent Search with helping her balance dual-credit coursework, extracurricular activities, and the demands of high school.

Through the programs, she developed stronger time-management and study skills that helped her stay organized and succeed academically. Reflecting on her experience, Joselyn shared, “AVID and Talent Search helped shape my path to graduation by showing me the essential skills I need to manage my time and learn the material.”

Beyond academics, both students found meaningful connections through the programs. One of Sinay’s favorite

memories was building friendships with peers who shared similar goals and aspirations. “These programs allowed me to make friendships and connections with people I have never met before and encouraged me to expand my network,” she said.

When asked what advice she would give younger students, Joselyn’s message was simple: “Give it a try; there is absolutely nothing to lose.” She believes the academic support, college and career guidance, and mentorship provided through AVID and Talent Search can make a lasting difference.

As they begin this exciting new chapter, Sinay is headed to the University of North Texas and Joselyn to Texas Christian University. Their accomplishments reflect the determination, resilience, and bright future of GISD graduates.

Fueling Up Athletes Student-athletes participating in summer practices and conditioning sessions at GISD facilities can eat for free while they train. After all, football players can’t run drills on empty stomachs, and volleyball players need more than determination to survive workouts in the Texas heat.

Whether it’s early-morning conditioning, strength training, or team camps, athletes have access to meals that help keep their energy up and their focus sharp. Coaches know that proper nutrition is just as important as practice reps, especially during long summer sessions.

From kids getting a nutritious meal in the cafeterias while spending time on campus during summer school, to visiting the food truck rolling through neighborhoods, and athletes refueling after practice, GISD spends the summer making sure students are fed, supported, and ready for whatever comes next.

Every summer, Gainesville Independent School District makes sure kids across the community still have access to healthy meals, smiles, and familiar faces through its free summer meal program for anyone 18 and under. Last summer, the Child Nutrition Program served a total of 9,582 summer meals, and they want to serve even more this year!

Lunch on Wheels GISD’s food truck travels to different neighborhoods and community spots, bringing free lunches directly to families.

When they see us down the street, kids know the truck is arriving with sandwiches, fruit, milk, and friendly staff ready to serve. This summer, the food truck will be making stops at Lexington Square Apartments and The Cooke County Library!

SMILES gram makes summer easier. Parents juggling work schedules don’t have to drive across town, and kids still get nutritious (and did we mention free) meals while school is out.

The summer meal program also keeps students connected to their schools and community throughout the summer months. Staff members often know the kids by name, ask about summer plans, and create a welcoming environment. Plus, we can’t forget about the yearly Discovery Kitchen at the Cooke County Library! Every summer, the Child Nutrition Program teams up with the library and holds a fun food demonstration and education event that goes along with a book that we read from the library. You can say you eat what you read. Keep an eye out for district communication on what this summer’s library Discovery Kitchen will bring.

College, Careers, & Life GAINESVILLE ISD COUNSELING PROGRAMS PREPARE STUDENTS FOR

G

ainesville ISD counseling programs are dedicated to helping students explore, prepare for, and pursue meaningful post-secondary opportunities from early childhood through high school graduation. Through strong partnerships with local organizations, colleges, businesses, and community leaders, GISD provides students with real-world experiences that connect learning to future careers and college pathways.

Career awareness begins early in GISD. At Edison Elementary, kindergarten and first-grade students participated in the Wheels, Skills, and Careers Fair, where community partners introduced a variety of careers through hands-on experiences. At Chalmers Elementary, fourth graders attended the first-ever Career Exploration Event, hearing from professionals in fields such as banking, insurance, STEM, law enforcement, paramedicine, aviation, and food service. Students were also introduced to Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and endorsements available at Gainesville High School, helping them connect their interests to future opportunities.

Career exploration continues at Gainesville Intermediate, where students participated in guidance lessons focused on STEM careers. Through interactive

activities and career interest inventories, students explored how their strengths align with STEM pathways and real-world problem solving. Sixth-grade students also explored broader career clusters, including Health Sciences, Business Services, and Technical Sciences, reflecting on how their interests may guide future decisions.

At Gainesville Junior High, career planning becomes more intentional. Eighthgrade students met regularly with Hope Kramer, Career Navigator with Workforce Solutions Texoma, to explore career options and understand how educational choices impact workforce readiness.

Through assessments, goal setting, and high school pathway discussions, students developed a clearer vision of their future.

GJH students also attended Career Exploration Day at North Central Texas College, participating in hands-on demonstrations in fields such as welding, nursing,

aviation, cybersecurity, and veterinary technology. These experiences provided valuable insight into technical training, certifications, and higher education opportunities.

At Gainesville High School, counseling programs emphasize college and career readiness through direct exposure to post-secondary institutions and workforce opportunities. Juniors and seniors attended the North Central Texas College College Fair, connecting with representatives to learn about admissions, financial aid, and academic pathways. Seniors also participated in the Red River Promise Rally, gaining information about tuition support, coaching, and resources to support a successful transition after graduation.

Through a partnership with Workforce Solutions Texoma, GHS hosted a career fair connecting students with employers, local businesses, public service agencies, and workforce organizations, allowing them to explore job opportunities and career pathways within the community.

Together, these experiences reflect Gainesville ISD’s commitment to building college, career, and life readiness at every grade level. By exposing students to diverse pathways, GISD helps students build confidence, discover their strengths, and prepare for success beyond graduation.

Teachers of the Year

The 2026 Teachers of the Year are Falicia Bell (Head Start), Nao Naomi Quick (Edison), Madelyn Bean (Chalmers), Janna Holt (Intermediate), Leslie Thomas (Junior High), and Kristal Young (High School). These teachers submitted applications to be considered for GISD Teacher of the Year. The applications were reviewed by a district level committee and the winners were announced at the End-of-Year Celebration. The Secondary Teacher of the Year is Kristal Young and the Elementary Teacher of the Year is Falicia Bell. They will both represent GISD in the TASA Regional Teacher of the Year competition.

Ms. Young is the GHS Culinary Arts teacher and CTE department head. She continues to attract students into her culinary program. She uses a hands-on approach and helps her students explore opportunities in the culinary industry.

What really makes her such a valuable asset to GHS is her ability to evolve each year, coming up with something new for her class every year.

Ms. Bell teaches 3 year olds at Head Start. Here, the focus is not only on the child, but the home. She builds relationships with her students and becomes a partner with the families at home. Ms. Bell comes in with a smile every day and says “today is going to be the best day ever!”, instilling this with her class and also with her colleagues.

Ms Lopez is the PEIMS Secretary at GIS. As a bilingual employee and a Gainesville ISD parent, she bridges communication between the school and families. In her first year, she quickly mastered complex systems such as Ascender, scheduling, class changes, and registration, despite being new to the school setting. She values teamwork and appreciates being part of a campus where they support one another like family.

Mr. Felton teaches 9th grade Biology and the first ever robotics class at GHS. His strong lesson plans and engaging instructional delivery are reflected in improved CBA scores from the previous year. Mr. Felton’s ability to connect with students has fostered a positive learning environment on all levels. He frequently hosts a lunch group in his room for his biology and robotics students.

Employees of the Year The 2026 Campus Employees of the Year are: Chelsea Smith (Head Start), Leslie Ovalle (Edison), Officer Mark Linnell (Chalmers), Yesenia Lopez (GIS), Mikayla Bentley (GJH), and Djana Scott (GHS).

After thoughtful consideration of each eligible employee, Yesenia Lopez was selected as the GISD Employee of the Year.

Gainesville ISD Education Foundation Teacher Appreciation Week Winners During Teacher Appreciation Week, the Gainesville ISD Education Foundation invited parents and community members to nominate their favorite teachers and share what makes them truly special. The six teachers chosen to receive grants will be receiving $250 to use towards their classroom needs for the 2026–2027 school year.
