FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

W

ith the close of the fall semester, we are presented with a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the many highlights that have taken place across our campuses. From remarkable academic gains in our classrooms—driven by our continued focus on providing strong Tier One instruction and implementing new curricular programs—to the incredible achievements of our students in Band, Visual Arts, Choir, Ag Science, Debate, and Athletics, there is so much to celebrate. Most importantly, our students are thriving in an academic environment designed to prepare them for life after GISD. Engaging in this work is truly the best job anyone could hold—shaping the lives and minds of our future leaders.

We continue to experience tremendous growth throughout our community. New rooftops and expanding commercial developments signal that Gainesville is on the verge of something very special, and we are embracing these changes as opportunities for our students and our school system. One such opportunity is our Leopard Promise program, now serving the second cohort of freshmen. This groundbreaking initiative allows students to take collegelevel courses and graduate with an associate degree at absolutely no cost to them—yes, $0.

The Leopard Promise is a true game changer, strengthening our college-going culture and opening doors for our scholars that will benefit them for a lifetime.

As we look ahead, our continued focus remains on strengthening Mathematics and Reading. These two areas serve as gateways to student success. Reading builds essential comprehension and communication skills, while mathematics supports logical reasoning, financial literacy, and scientific understanding. Together, they form the foundation of all learning and are critical to equipping students for future academic and real-world challenges.

I also want to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to our community for supporting the May 2025 Bond referendum. Phase 1 of the bond projects—which includes Edison, Chalmers, and Gainesville Intermediate—has now been fully planned. We are moving forward with planning Phase 2, involving Gainesville Junior High School and Gainesville High School. This bond will allow us to add much-needed instructional space, renovate aging facilities, address safety and security concerns, and make significant improvements to ADA accessibility across the district.

As we continue striving to improve GISD and enhance the educational experience for all students, I once again welcome parents, guardians, and community members to join us in planning for the future. Public education is facing unprecedented challenges, and we need every voice to ensure that our mission remains strong. When parents and schools work together, students benefit in countless ways—higher academic achievement, better attendance, stronger motivation, improved social skills, and greater confidence. Collaboration ensures that the needs of all students are honored and that families remain engaged partners in shaping our schools.

Mia Hamm powerfully stated, “I am a member of a team, and I rely on the team. I defer to it and sacrifice for it, because the team, not the individual, is the ultimate champion.”

Bond Program Timeline: What’s Ahead

O

n May 3, 2025, the Gainesville community members came together and voted in favor of the $58,833,798 GISD Bond Election. The successful passage of this bond reflects months of thoughtful planning, collaboration, and engagement from district leadership, staff, and community stakeholders. The extensive planning helped GISD get ahead of the curve, and we are already well underway with many of the bond projects.

As promised, a Bond Oversight Committee was formed and the first meeting was held in September. This committee will ensure transparency and that the projects remain accurate to the voterapproved 2025 bond program. The committee heard updates from Dr. Stewart, Joe Warren - Director of Operations, Dr. Jon Hill - Director of Finance, and Mitch Fuqua - WRA Architects.

The GJH renovations were part of the 2025 Bond Election, but several smaller, necessary projects were able to begin early to save money and make use of summer downtime. During the spring, the front awning and tree were removed, and all design work was completed.

On June 16, the Board of Trustees approved a resolution allowing the District to reimburse the general fund with bond proceeds for related construction costs. The current junior high projects include the new entryway, secure vestibule, library expansion, RTU replacement, new roof, and front flatwork. This phase was originally expected to finish in January 2026 but is now projected for completion in March 2026.

The bond package has been divided into two phases. Phase 1 is scheduled to begin in May 2026 and finish in December 2027.

Kickoff meetings with WRA architects, BTC contractors, and campus administrators took place in October, and construction drawings are 50% complete—on track for mid-April GMP and bid returns. Phase 1 schematic designs and interior renderings on the gainesvilleisd.org, and additional updates will be posted on the Bond 2025 webpage.

Edison Elementary: 8 classroom expansion, secure vestibule, fire alarm, PA system, new gym/storm shelter, cafeteria expansion, library expansion, new flooring; Chalmers Elementary: 8 classroom addition/storm shelter, secure fencing, parking lot, playground; Intermediate: 8 classroom addition, secure fencing, fire alarm, parking lot, playground

The Phase 2 projects will begin approximately six months after Phase 1 kicks off. These projects will begin in September 2026 and are estimated to be complete in July 2028. The kickoff meeting for these projects took place in November.

THE PHASE 2 PROJECTS INCLUDE: • •

Junior High: enclose F hall, secure fencing, fire alarm, cafeteria expansion High School: PA system, secure vestibule, door locks, new CTE wing (Culinary Arts, Visual Arts, Robotics, and Health Sciences), and black box theater.

Additional projects that are not included in bond projects include the renovation of 800 S. Morris into an Early Childhood Center for Head Start and Pre-K. The building was previously McMurray Elementary and then served as the central administration offices. The project is in the design phase and the district is currently waiting on the guaranteed maximum pricing (GMP) to determine next steps.

We are excited to transform our buildings into safer, more secure, and more modern learning environments that better support the success, well-being, and growth of our students and staff!

A Christmas

Tradition

T

he 10th annual GISD Christmas card design contest was once again a success, resulting in creative designs from some of our youngest students to upcoming graduates. Students from 1st - 12th grade were invited to participate in the contest. Under the guidance of the art teachers, hundreds of students carefully created designs which met the guidelines set forth for the project.

The art was reviewed at the campus level, and the top designs from each campus were then judged by a district level committee. The winning card designs were used to create the 2025 GISD Christmas card, which was distributed to GISD staff members and local community businesses. In addition to the card, the winning designs were on display throughout the district

buildings as well as the district website, newsletters, and social media throughout the month of December.

The art of GHS junior Camila Gonzalez won placement on the cover and runner-up and placement on the inside cover went to 8th grade student Paulina Ruezga Martin. Individual campus winners were Cason Rich (GIS), Daniela Jaramillo (Chalmers), and Odalys Juarez Sanchez (Edison).

Dr. Stewart made a surprise visit to the winners and announced their achievement in front of their peers. Thank you to all of our talented GISD students who participated in the annual contest. We hope to continue this Christmas tradition for many years to come. We are proud to share the artistic talent of our students with our community!

empowering innovation, enriching education

n September 17, 2025, excitement filled the halls of Gainesville ISD campuses as the Gainesville ISD Education Foundation (GEF) Board’s Grant Patrol made its annual rounds. With bells, cheers, and surprise visits, they delivered the thrilling news to the 2025–2026 Innovative Teaching Grant recipients. This much anticipated tradition represents the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to nurturing creativity, innovation, and excellence across the district.

The GEF works tirelessly throughout the year to raise funds that directly impact student learning. Through partnerships with the district, the

Foundation supports programs that meet the evolving needs of both students and educators. This year alone, the Foundation awarded 37 grants totaling $68,758.29, empowering teachers to bring their most creative ideas to life.

Since its inception, GEF has proudly distributed over $600,000 to support innovative teaching practices and student centered initiatives.

“The Foundation’s goal has always been to enhance the learning experience for every student, and when teachers are given the tools and freedom to be innovative, the students thrive in new and exciting ways,” said Executive Director, Arin Lane.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

GEF’s commitment to education extends far beyond grant season.

Throughout the year, the Foundation hosts a variety of community centered events that raise funds, build awareness, and bring people together in celebration of education.

The Third Annual Holiday Pie Fundraiser wrapped up on November 1, selling 70 homemade pies, which surpassed this year’s sale goal! The pies will fill family gatherings this holiday season in support of GISD classrooms.

Next up is the Second Annual Winter Wonderland Gala on February 7, 2026, a magical evening dedicated to celebrating

and supporting GISD educators with live music from J’s Dueling Pianos, dinner, dancing, and a silent auction. Spring will bring another loved tradition with the Third Annual Plant Sale Fundraiser.

The Foundation will also host its Annual Shining Stars Banquet on May 4, 2026, honoring the top 10% of Gainesville High School’s graduating seniors, recognizing their academic excellence. It will be an evening filled with support from the local community, families, staff and administrators of GISD who helped these students shine.

In addition to major fundraisers, GEF stays active in the community with a variety of outreach and appreciation events. The Foundation participated in the GISD Back to School Bash, handing out cold drinks to families, and organized its Third Annual Coat Drive to keep students warm through the winter season. December brought festive fun with Candy Canes with Santa, as Santa himself visited the district’s younger campuses to spread holiday cheer.

To kick off the new year, GEF will host Hot Cocoa for Teachers in January, a sweet treat of appreciation for the hard work of our educators. Following this fun event will be a brand new event, Q&A with GEF, inviting the community to learn more about the Foundation and meet its dedicated board members. Finally to wrap up the school year, the sweet treats will continue with popsicles at field day, celebrating students’ hard work and the joy of learning.

The Gainesville ISD Education Foundation is proud to stand beside the district’s educators and students, helping to build a brighter future for all.

With continued community support, GEF remains steadfast in its mission to fund innovation, foster excellence, and enrich education for years to come.

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

A VIBRANT SHOWCASE OF CULTURE AND COMMUNITY

ispanic Heritage Month, celebrated from September 15 to October 15, recognizes the vibrant cultures and traditions of Spanish-speaking countries across the United States. At GISD, this festive observance provides students and families with exciting opportunities to participate in activities that promote a deeper appreciation and understanding for Hispanic Heritage.

The NAHS Art Club contributed to the celebrations by creating beautiful flowers for a special Hispanic Heritage display in the Gainesville High School rotunda.

At Edison, Ms. Mendez’s and Mrs. Davis' dual language classrooms explored the vibrant culture of Costa Rica by learning about traditional foods such as "COPOS" and "Churchill."

Gainesville Head Start celebrated by encouraging students to wear their cultural clothing, allowing young learners to showcase their heritage with pride.

By engaging in artistic expression, culinary exploration, and meaningful interactions, students from diverse backgrounds learn to appreciate the richness of Hispanic cultures and the value of diversity within our community.

This celebration inspires others to embrace and honor the contributions that enrich our schools and lives every day.

Two Languages, One Bright Future: EXPLORING BILINGUAL EDUCATION

E

ducation is always changing, and nowhere is that more evident than in bilingual classrooms. Our GISD teachers are reimagining how to connect with students who bring more than one language, and often more than one culture, into the classroom. Bilingual education isn’t just about learning in two languages, it’s about teaching in ways that open twice as many doors.

The goal of bilingual education is to help English language learners develop strong listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in both Spanish and English by building literacy and academic abilities in both languages. The program focuses on mastering Spanish, English, and core subjects—math, science, and social studies—so students can participate fully and equitably in school.

At GISD, we offer both the one-way and two-way dual language programs. The one-way dual language program serves students who all share the same primary language. In GISD, that language is Spanish.

The two-way dual language program includes Spanishspeaking and Englishspeaking students, and both groups learn in both languages. The benefits of a dual language program include maintaining family and cultural connections, fostering pride in two languages and cultures, and expanding future career opportunities.

GISD recently expanded opportunities for students to earn high school Language Other Than English (LOTE) credit through the Dual Language Immersion Program. In the summer of 2025, we had twenty-one students earn their High School LOTE credit—of those, our youngest student awarded was Emma Franco, who completed all requirements at the end of third grade.

To be eligible to earn the high school LOTE credit a student must:

Be enrolled in a dual language immersion program for a minimum of five consecutive years, AND Obtain either Meets or Masters on both math and reading STAAR in at least one grade, AND

•

Achieve proficiency in English and the other language, with proficient scores in reading and speaking in both languages, measured in GISD using LAS Links Progress Monitoring.

Initial Identification Process for Emergent Bilingual Students

1. Home Language Survey - Upon initial enrollment in a Texas public school, a family must complete a Home Language Survey for each new student enrolling in any grade from prekindergarten through grade 12. If a response on the HLS indicates a language other than English, LEAs must use the standardized state-approved English language proficiency test for identification.

2. Language Proficiency Assessment Committee - Convene an LPAC meeting to determine whether a student is emergent bilingual using English proficiency assessment results and to recommend bilingual or ESL placement. A student is identified as emergent bilingual if any assessment score falls below the English proficiency level.

3. Parent Notification - Notify parents in their primary language if their child is identified as emergent bilingual. The notification must include the child’s classification, English proficiency level, recommended bilingual or ESL placement, and the program’s purpose, content, and benefits.

4. Placement - Place the emergent bilingual student in the recommended bilingual or ESL program until parental approval or denial is received.

In the event an emergent bilingual student is not recommended for the dual language program, GISD also offers a strong ESL program. This program helps English learners develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English using second-language acquisition methods. The program supports mastery of English and core subjects—math, science, and social studies—so students can participate fully and equitably in school.

GISD Police: Fully Staffed & Fully Committed!

W

e’re proud to announce that the Gainesville ISD Police Department is now fully

staffed with a dedicated police officer at every campus in the district! While safety and security are at the heart of what we do, our officers go above and beyond.

You’ll find them mentoring students, building relationships, and being a positive presence in our schools and community.

Our officers are School-Based Law Enforcement Officers, a bit different from traditional School Resouce Officers (SROs). The GISD Police Department operates as its own law enforcement agency, focused on keeping our schools safe and our students supported.

The Gainesville ISD Police Department has not been fully staffed since 2022.

“I could not be more proud of the team we have in place,” said Dr. DesMontes Stewart, Superintendent. “Our officers do far more than ensure safety—they build meaningful relationships with our students and staff every single day. Their presence on each campus strengthens trust, fosters connection, and creates an environment where students feel supported, seen, and protected. We are grateful for their commitment to serving with honor, courage, and integrity, and for the positive impact they make across our district.”

The GISD Police Department is led by Chief Jason Peacock, who came to GISD in the Spring of 2025. Peacock was an officer at Pilot Point ISD for the three years prior and was a Public Safety Officer (Police/Fire/Paramedic) for the Town of Highland Park Department of Public Safety for 20 years. Peacock is stationed at Edison and also serves Head Start.

“I’ve truly felt the warm support of both the community and GISD since I arrived,” Peacock said. “I’m excited to be here and to see what we can accomplish together.”

Also serving in the GISD Police Department are Officer Juana Rodriguez, Officer Chris Burr, Officer Mark Linnell, and Officer David Stanley. Officer Juana Rodriguez is a GHS alum, and she has proudly served GISD for seven years.

She is stationed at Gainesville Junior High where the students and staff adore her. She embodies the heart of a true school based law enforcement officer as a protector, mentor, and educator.

Officer Chris Burr is stationed at Gainesville High School. This is his second year at GISD, serving Gainesville Intermediate last year. Officer Burr was raised in Gainesville and has 25 years of experience in law enforcement. He has served in various roles in his career ranging from investigator, tactical and leadership. He loves being involved in the community and helping families in need.

Officer Burr's message to the students is to "always do your best at something, work hard and keep grinding toward your personal goals.”

Officer Mark Linnell is enjoying his first year at GISD, but he is no stranger to our community. Linnell grew up in Cooke County and has strong roots with GISD. His wife, Jill, serves as the counselor at Edison Elementary. Officer Linnell has 28 years of law enforcement experience, including time as a Jailer with the Denton County Sheriff’s Office, Officer with the Gainesville Police Department and the University of North Texas Police Department, and then finally as a Deputy with the Cooke County Sheriff’s Office.

Officer Linnell is stationed at Chalmers, where his calm demeanor, servant heart and fatherly approach serves the students and staff well.

Also new to GISD this year is Officer David “Scott” Stanley. He has been in law enforcement for eight years, with three years as a Deputy Sheriff and five years as a Deputy Constable in Navarro County before moving to Gainesville. "I look forward to being a positive influence on not only the students, but the parents and staff as well,” Stanley said.

The GISD Police Department’s mission is simple: to provide a safe and secure learning environment for all students, staff, and visitors through proactive law enforcement, trust, and community collaboration. They serve with honor, courage, respect, and integrity every single day.

Whether it’s responding to safety issues, offering guidance, or handing out stickers and high-fives, the GISD PD is proud to be part of what makes Gainesville ISD a great place to learn and grow.

Turning the Page:

Supporting Students with

Dyslexia

R

eading is the key that unlocks the world of learning. For some students, however, reading comes with unique challenges. Dyslexia, a common learning difference affecting word recognition, spelling, and reading fluency, can make the journey through school more difficult, but with early support and evidence-based intervention, students can thrive.

Gainesville ISD is committed to identifying dyslexia early and providing effective, personalized support to ensure every student reaches their full potential.

Understanding Dyslexia Dyslexia is a neurobiological learning difference, not a reflection of intelligence or effort. Students with dyslexia may struggle with recognizing words accurately and quickly, decoding unfamiliar words, reading fluently and comprehending text, or spelling and written expression.

Importantly, dyslexia can be successfully addressed with structured, evidence-based instruction. Gainesville ISD recognizes that timely intervention is critical to helping students build confidence and succeed academically.

Gainesville ISD’s Dyslexia Program To support students with dyslexia, Gainesville ISD implements the Take Flight curriculum. The program focuses on word recognition, reading fluency, reading comprehension, and real-world application.

Cora Pyle is a 5th grade student who has received dyslexia instruction for two years. “The dyslexia program has helped me so much because it has made it so much easier for me in class,” Cora said. “Learning to code words has helped me to understand and see the sounds that I used to have a hard time with. There were things I did not know how to do, but now I can do it!”

to see the impact the program is making on Cora. “The academic growth I have seen in Cora since starting in the dyslexia program has been nothing short of amazing,” Katy said.

“Mrs. Blumberg, Ms. Cheramie and Mrs. Krantz have gone above and beyond to ensure Cora's academic success.

Since starting the program, Cora's confidence has soared, and she doesn't shy away from reading anymore. She wants to read!”

Mary Flanagan, Director of Special Services, says that “reading at home is about connection, not perfection—small, consistent steps make a huge difference”.

Tips for Supporting Reading at Home • Read Together Daily: Spend at least 15–20 minutes reading with your child. Take turns reading aloud or echo-read (you read a line, then your child repeats it).

• Focus on Strengths: Incorporate books or materials your child is interested in—sports, animals, comics, or hobbies—to keep reading enjoyable.

Our Students Made a Difference Through Service

ISD participates in the annual Thanksgiving food drive for VISTO every November. VISTO is a valuable asset to Cooke County, providing food, financial assistance, and education to families who need it most. This year’s school food drive proved that you don’t have to be big to make a difference, and even small acts of kindness can create a big impact.

One of the many services they offer that directly benefits our GISD students is the Backpack Buddy program. The program has provided backpacks full of delicious, nutritionally dense minimeals to children in Cooke County for more than 15 years. The goal of the program is to deliver weekend meals to children who have been identified by school officials as being "at risk" for hunger. The needs in our community grow each year, therefore the program and donation needs continue to grow as well. In 2024, VISTO provided meals to 997 children in 15 different Cooke County schools, serving a total of 1,121 students.

This year, our Edison, Chalmers, and Intermediate students, families, and staff collected items for the food pantry as well as the Backpack Buddy program.

Edison collected 8,372 items. Mrs. Dunning’s class brought in 3,189 items, followed by Valladares and Smith. Chalmers collected 5,112 items and awarded the top three classrooms, which were Sullivant, Fuller, and Werner. Intermediate collected 3208 items in total. The top three classrooms were Harris, Torres, and Stogner.

In total, GISD elementary campuses collected 16,692 items weighing 5,260 pounds!

ONCE A LEOPARD LEOPARD...

The Leopard Cross Country team had another fantastic year, finishing the season as the 11th best 4A team in the state! For the second consecutive year, the team competed at the State Cross Country meet in Round Rock. Senior Daniel Platas advanced individually as a freshman, so this marks his third consecutive trip to State. At the State meet this year, Daniel Platas led the pack finishing 41st overall. He was followed by Braxton Evans, Brady Burgess, Xavier Gonzalez, Erick Ramirez, Ethan Torres, and Jayden Cruz. The team will return 5 out of the 7 runners, so we look forward to cheering them on at State next year as well. The team is coached by Danny Franco and Hector Sagrero.

The future is strong for the Cross Country program, with District championships earned by the Gainesville Junior High girls and boys teams. For the first time in GJH Cross Country history, the girls team won first place in district as a team! The girls were led by 8th graders London Malone, Miranda White, Alison Saucedo, and Stephanie Verdugo, as well as 7th graders Diana Arredondo, Sofia Gonzalez, and Brooklyn Emberton who all medaled finishing in the Top 15. After coming up short last season, the boys came away as District champions as well! The Boys were led by 8th graders Victor Pena, Alejandro Delgado, Eddi Delgado, and Jacob Baker as well as 7th graders Alex Morales and Alfredo Huerta who all medaled in the Top 15. The Leopards Varsity football team received many individual awards for their hard work on the field this season and earned recognition on the 5-4A All-District Team.

These athletes represented the program with excellence this season and their work ethic and leadership show what Leopard Pride is all about. Earning first team offense were Bugg Kemp (Sr-TE), Ray Glancy (Sr-QB), and Payton Mathews (Sr-WR). Julien Quinones (Sr-DE) earned first team defense. Da’Metric Bruce (Jr-WR) is second team offense and Jackson Otts (Sr-DT) and Kaden Scott (Sr-DT) are second team defense. Honorable Mention Leopards were Hayden Nichols, Treavonte Walls, Kaison Seatherton, Adrian Lira, Edgar Barton, Travis Burnett, Yahir Cordova, Jayden Pinales, Ethan Sorrell, Jaxon Ledane, and Ezikel Battle.

In addition to the athletic honors, numerous Leopards were recognized for their hard work in the classroom, maintaining a 90 or above GPA during the entire football season. Academic All - State Teams A students’ performance in the classroom can sometimes be difficult to manage while participating in athletics, but their hard work does not go unnoticed. To be nominated for the Texas High School Coaches Association Academic All-State Team, a student must be a senior high school athlete, trainer, or manager in good standing, of good moral character, and have an overall GPA of 92 or above including courses from grades 9-11 and courses completed from grade 12 at the time of nomination.

While the student might initially meet the criteria for nomination, that does not guarantee the student a spot on a team.

When reviewing the nominations, the THSCA considers each students’ GPA, class rank, SAT and/or ACT score. The students receive points based on each criteria. The total number of points they receive determines which team they are placed on. The classification of the school is not a factor, and there’s not a limit on how many players can make a team.

We applaud these student-athletes for their commitment and dedication to perform with the highest of excellence academically and on the field or court.

AVID &Talent Search: WHERE COLLEGE DREAMS BEGIN EARLY

n Gainesville ISD, college preparation starts well before high school.

Through the AVID elective and Talent Search, junior high students are already exploring campuses, meeting university leaders, and discovering how education opens doors to the careers they imagine.

Why Junior High Matters Junior high is a pivotal stage as students begin choosing academic pathways that shape their high school experience and future opportunities. These early decisions influence the courses they take, the skills they build, and the postsecondary programs they can pursue. Early exposure to college helps students make informed choices, discover their interests, and understand the supports they will need to reach their goals.

Building a College-Going Culture in GISD AVID and Talent Search work together to make college an expectation. They offer academic, organizational, and leadership skill-building; tutoring, mentoring, and advising; and hands-on experiences that help students envision their futures.

Each campus visit builds confidence and reinforces the belief that college is within reach.

College Visits That Inspire This fall, GJHS AVID and Talent Search students visited North Central Texas College’s Gainesville and Denton campuses and Texas Woman’s University.

In the spring, they will tour the University of North Texas with TRIO Talent Search.

These visits are more than field trips—they mark the beginning of students’ collegegoing journeys. Students explore academic

buildings and student centers and hear firsthand insights from college students and admissions staff.

At NCTC, students learned about the flexibility and affordability of community colleges and the supports available for first-generation learners. At TWU, they were inspired by alumni stories, especially from a former GISD graduate who once participated in Talent Search and now works at the university. Seeing a former Leopard succeed makes college feel real and attainable. These experiences motivate students to ask deeper questions and picture themselves as future college students.

Looking Ahead: Growing Dreams at the High School Level As students move into high school, their preparation deepens. Talent Search students participate in “Open Doors,” comparing major college-readiness exams such as the TSIA2, PSAT, SAT, and ACT. AVID students strengthen research skills through the college fair facts and posters competition, creating collaborative displays on colleges nationwide.

Both programs also guide families through the college process. In the fall,

AVID hosted a FAFSA Group Awareness and Completion Day, while Talent Search offered SMART Tips for College Funding workshops. Seniors also attended the NCTC/Talent Search FAFSA Night for individualized support.

Financial literacy plays a key role as well. Through AVID’s College Scholarship Awareness Charts and the Future Vision and Financial Stability Project, students engaged in a financial literacy session led by Blake Wallace of Edward Jones Investments—building real-world planning skills and connections with local professionals.

With 62 AVID and 77 Talent Search students at the junior high and 105 AVID and 222 Talent Search students at the high school, GISD students are building strong postsecondary readiness. BUILDING BRIDGES ACROSS GISD

A

t Gainesville Junior High School, leadership doesn’t stop at the classroom door—it grows across our district.

Our Leopard Leaders are a shining example of what it means to serve, mentor, and inspire. These remarkable students represent the heart of GJHS and the pride of Gainesville ISD as they dedicate time each week to mentor our youngest learners at Edison Elementary and Head Start.

The Leopard Leaders program began in 2020 with the goal of creating meaningful leadership opportunities for junior high students. Coach Leslie Thomas piloted the program with a colleague to ensure these opportunities extended beyond the junior high campus, allowing students to become role models for younger learners across GISD. Since then, Leopard Leaders have continued to make their mark through their weekly visits to Edison and, for the first time this year, to the young students at Head Start.

Each visit brings energy, encouragement, and compassion. Working alongside host teachers, Leopard Leaders assist individual students and small groups with reading, classroom activities, and social learning. More importantly, they demonstrate kindness, respect, and a genuine love of learning. Their presence shows Little Leopards that “big kids” care about school and care about them. Eighth grader Krystal Ayala shared that she joined the program because she wanted to “work with the little kids by showing them kindness and by being a leader and someone they can look up to.”

Teachers say the impact is immediate. “The excitement is contagious,” one teacher shared. “The little ones light up the moment the Leopard Leaders walk through the door.” These visits are more than mentoring moments— they’re bridges between campuses, connecting students from age three through eighth grade in a shared spirit of community and support.

For the Leopard Leaders, this experience is about more than service. It teaches them patience, empathy, communication, and the power of influence. Many say the program helps them understand what it truly means to be a role model. Eighth grader Ava Willis explained that after serving in a leadership role last year, she “wanted to continue to grow and be a better leader this year” by joining Leopard Leaders.

Each day, as Little Leopards wave goodbye, they do so with admiration for the mentors they hope to follow one day.

And as the Leopard Leaders return to GJHS, they carry the pride of knowing they are shaping the next generation of GISD learners.

At Gainesville ISD, leadership starts early—but it doesn’t stop there. Through programs like Leopard Leaders, our students are learning to lift others as they climb, proving that once a Leopard, always a leader.

A Year of Growth, Leadership, and Community Spirit

T

he Gainesville FFA Chapter has experienced a year of remarkable growth, accomplishment, and community impact. With 148 active FFA members and 15 Junior FFA members, the chapter continues to build a strong tradition of agricultural excellence while expanding opportunities for leadership and personal development. This year, Gainesville FFA has grown not only in numbers but also by broadening its programs and achieving success at both local and state levels.

One of the most recent exciting developments is the expansion of the Floral Design program. What once served as a classroom-based course has blossomed into a limited-service floral shop, offering ready-to-sell arrangements to the public. This hands-on experience gives students the chance to apply classroom skills in a real-world business setting, learning everything from design techniques and customer service to pricing, marketing, and time management.

The shop has quickly become a symbol of student creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, allowing members to showcase their floral artistry while generating funds to support chapter activities.

Leadership development has also been a key area of focus this year. Gainesville FFA

members have demonstrated impressive participation in Leadership Development Events (LDEs), where students practice essential skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.

From public speaking and job interview contests to agricultural issues forums, students are stepping into leadership roles and representing Gainesville High School with confidence. Additionally, livestock exhibitors have continued to excel in local and regional shows, demonstrating dedication, responsibility, and care in the daily management of their animal projects.

The summer months brought a series of outstanding achievements that highlighted Gainesville FFA’s growing reputation for excellence. Julissa Medina was named the Texas FFA State Winner in the Agricultural Sales Proficiency category, a remarkable honor that recognizes her hard work, professionalism, and

passion for agribusiness. Medina was also named a State Finalist in the Star American Agribusiness category, one of the highest honors awarded by the Texas FFA Association. Additionally, Savannah Roessler and Raegan Neu earned distinction as State Finalists in their respective award categories, showcasing the wide range of talents and career pathways represented within the chapter.

Beyond the classroom, Gainesville FFA makes a meaningful impact through community service. This year’s “Little Leopards, Big Spirit” initiative saw the entire Agriculture Department come together to create 220 mini homecoming mums and garters for Gainesville ISD kindergarten students. Each handcrafted gift spread school spirit and fostered inclusion throughout the district.

Looking ahead, the spring semester promises success as Gainesville FFA prepares for Career Development Events (CDEs), floral design competitions, stock shows, and community engagement opportunities. Whether raising show animals, arranging flowers, working on Ag mech projects, or competing in speech contests, every activity aligns with the organization’s mission: to develop leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.

With ongoing support, Gainesville FFA continues to thrive as both a learning experience and a pathway to leadership.

Great leaders are vital for any program to continue to thrive and progress. The GHS Ag Science department and FFA program is led by Traci Broom and Maegan Fowler. Broom was recently honored as the Outstanding Mid-Career Ag Teacher by the Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas (ATAT). This prestigious title is awarded to a single educator among 2,600 of Texas’ top Ag teachers with 6 to 15 years of experience who demonstrate exceptional service. With 14 years in education, and 7 dedicated years at

Gainesville ISD, Broom has distinguished herself not only in the classroom but also as an advocate for teachers and students as she represents Area V on the ATAT Board of Directors.

From the welding shop to the show ring, Gainesville FFA members are proving that agriculture is more than a class, it’s a lifestyle, a learning experience, and a pathway to leadership. With the support of dedicated advisors, community partners, and a growing membership, Gainesville FFA continues to bloom.

A

t Gainesville Head Start, the mission is to enrich the lives of children and families, including those with special needs, through academic and social services and to empower families to advocate for their children. The Gainesville Head Start Motto is “Bright Smiles, Bright Futures - Always Be KIND!” A Foundation of Education Gainesville Head Start prepares children for Kindergarten through a nurturing environment focused on academic and social development. As a two-year program, it provides tailored learning experiences using the Frog Street curriculum for three-year-olds and Savvas for four-yearolds. The program emphasizes play-based learning across various centers, including pretend play, literacy, and science.

The classrooms at Head Start are small, with 17 students and two adults in threeyear-old classes and 18 students and two adults in the four-year-old classes. This teacher to student ratio ensures personalized attention and helps children develop readiness for their next educational steps.

Gainesville Head Start is led by Tara Crockett. “As the Principal of Head Start, it is an amazing experience to come to

Prioritizing Health Health and well-being are vital at Gainesville Head Start. The program ensures regular health screenings and aids families in accessing medical care, all supported by our dedicated nurse. Daily dental hygiene practices are taught, reinforcing the importance of health.

Partnerships, like the one with Chartwells, enhance the focus on nutrition through engaging lessons, such as making a glaze for donut holes while integrating fun with healthy eating practices.

Family Involvement Family support is crucial at Gainesville Head Start. Parents are supported from day one that their child enrolls to our program. Head Start thrives to get to know every family dynamic as soon as possible. Through three home visits each year, teachers connect with families to discuss classroom progress and provide at home learning materials. Monthly parent meetings encourage involvement and community engagement, while academic nights allow families to participate in their child’s education actively.

Social and Emotional Growth Gainesville Head Start uses Conscious Discipline strategies to build emotional intelligence in students. Daily rituals foster connection, helping children develop independence and a stable routine. A Mental Health Coordinator conducts sessions on self regulation and conflict resolution, enriching the emotional framework of the children.

Gainesville Head Start exemplifies a holistic approach that integrates education, health, family involvement, and emotional growth. The program is committed to laying a strong foundation for lifelong success and empowering both children and families within the community.

ommunities In Schools of North Texas (CISNT) breaks down the barriers that keep kids from being successful in school, connecting students with caring adults and community resources to create a personalized system of support for each child. CISNT addresses the academic, behavioral, social, and basic needs of each student, providing wraparound support to address challenges like food insecurity, mental health, and absenteeism so students can focus on learning.

CISNT now serves four Gainesville ISD campuses: Chalmers Elementary, Gainesville Intermediate, Gainesville Junior High, and the newly added Edison Elementary/ Head Start campus. Each CISNT campus has a full-time Communities In Schools Site Coordinator who provides ongoing support to a caseload of 80-100 students, as well as support to the whole school population. Services are provided in one-to-one, small group, and school-wide settings. CISNT is proud to partner with Gainesville ISD to bring vital resources, services, and personalized support to students and families in need.

Creating Positive Change CISNT collaborates with community agencies, volunteers, teachers, parents, and school staff to rally alongside students and families to provide needed services.

Students like Emma*, now in her second year in the CISNT program at Chalmers Elementary, began her journey needing one-on-one support due to behavioral challenges. With steady encouragement and guidance from her Site Coordinator,

she has built stronger communication skills, learned to express her emotions in healthy ways, and now participates confidently in group settings. When asked how CISNT has impacted her life, she shared, “My Site Coordinator helps me to calm down and she makes me feel safe.”

Her growth is a powerful reminder that every child deserves a caring adult in their corner—and that this support can lead to lasting, positive change.

Shine in the Arts

At Gainesville ISD (GISD), the Fine Arts Department provides a full spectrum of artistic opportunities, including Band, Choir, Theater, Visual Arts, and Elementary Music. Programs begin as early as Pre-K at Edison, with students exploring choir, beginner band, and theater by the intermediate grades. Across all campuses, students are encouraged to grow creatively while developing confidence and skill in their chosen fields.

All-Region Band

Fall is one of the busiest seasons for the Redcoat Marching Band. Preparation begins in the summer heat as students practice for football games, pep rallies, and community parades—while also entering a rigorous stretch of marching competitions. The Redcoats are the reigning Class 4A Champions of the Annual HEB Marching Contest, and this year’s highlights include earning 1st Division “Superior” ratings from all three judges at the UIL Region Marching Contest, advancing them to Area. Following the marching season, students shifted to preparation for All-State auditions through both the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) and the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB).

GISD hosted nearly one thousand student musicians in November and December for All-Region Band auditions. Ten Redcoats earned All-Region honors: William Drew (flute), Ruby Kemp (flute), Autumn Farr-Overstreet (clarinet), Rithika Chitoor (clarinet), Jarek Marin (trumpet), Andres Costilla (horn), Jazmin Huerta (trombone), Phoenix Kemp (euphonium), Davis (tuba), and Flores (tuba). In addition, Costilla, Huerta, Phoenix Kemp, and Davis earned Area honors and will be competing for a spot in the TMEA All - State band.

In the ATSSB All-Region Jazz Band auditions, Phoenix Kemp placed 3rd chair, 1st band on tenor trombone, while Logan Davis earned 2nd chair, 2nd band on bass trombone. Both performed at the All-Region Jazz Clinic and Concert in Krum. Phoenix also earned Area honors and auditioned for the TMEA All-State Jazz Band.

At the junior high level, 12 GJH band students auditioned for the All-Region Band, with two—George Fields (tuba) and Eric Zamora (percussion)—earning places. They will join GHS students to represent GISD at the All-Region Clinic and Concert in January.

choir This year, the annual fall musical was replaced with a public Festival Showcase to help students prepare for the Thespian Festival competition in November. Participants included Payton Cox, Harley Mills, Kayley Hoberer, Joselyn Gutierrez, Ella Gonzalez, Lilian Michel, Sydney Emmert, Mason Spencer, Anya Parris, and Charlie Norman. A major highlight was Lilian Michel’s original short film—written, directed, and performed by her—which qualified for the national competition in June.

The theatre program is also expanding at younger grade levels. Mrs. Susan Beall, now a full-time theatre teacher at Gainesville Intermediate, also leads the Junior High program. This year, Intermediate students staged their first musical, Miss Nelson Is Missing, at the GISD auditorium. Junior High students are currently preparing for the JH One Act Play Festival in January.

TAEA Award

GHS choir students competed in the TMEA All-Region Choir auditions in October, performing pieces in English, Spanish, German, and Latin. Junior Liam Cotton and freshman Catherine Rodriguez placed in the top 12 chairs of the Region 2 All-Region Choir and performed in a combined regional concert in early November. Both advanced to the Pre-Area round, hosted at GHS later that month.

At the junior high level, 11 GJH choir students prepared for Region auditions, and four earned spots in the All-Region Choir: Lillian Atkins (8th), Bailey Alvarado (8th), Oscar Duque Vargas (8th), and Max Olvera (7th). The GISD Visual Arts Department earned the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) District of Distinction Award for the second consecutive year, placing GISD among the top 8% of visual arts programs statewide. The department’s talented team—Robin Perkins, Melissa Knight, Kelly Stogner, Janet Johnson, and Jessica Borden—continues to raise the bar for student creativity and achievement. Lead Teacher Robin Perkins, also a TAEA Leaders Scholar, now serves as Chair of the TAEA Member Art Show Committee.

Each year, TAEA sponsors an art exhibit at the TASA/TASB Convention.

GISD submitted student pieces, and three were selected: Caitlynn Perkins (GHS), Amayah Gonzalez (GIS), and Zarah Mendoza (Chalmers). Additionally, multiple GISD students participated in the local GAVA Fall Art Exhibition.

For the first time, GHS swept all Youth Awards, earning a total of $2,000 in scholarships. Winning artists included Charlie Norman, Aubrie Perkins, Lyndsie Tan-To, Analy Rangel, Caitlynn Perkins, Robert Vera, Blake Britain, Robin Perkins, Isaiah Gutierrez, Ella Gonzalez, Loreley Gonzalez, and Amiah Padron.

Amayah Gonzalez Elementary music continues to grow in rigor and excitement, guided by lead teacher Karleen King and supported by district leadership. At Edison, new teacher Nancy Clark continues traditions such as the 1st Grade Flashmob at a high school football game and the annual Pre-K Christmas Concert. At Chalmers, Ms. King, and at Intermediate, Mr. Trujillo, are preparing spring showcases featuring recorders, bucket drumming, and other engaging musical activities.

he Athletic Leadership Council (ALC) is a small group of some of Gainesville High School’s top student-athlete leaders, led by advisor Coach Shon Adams. The ALC consists of seniors across different sports, with each sport being represented through at least one member.

Started just last year, the council is a new and growing leadership opportunity for GHS students. The council brings forth different ideas about how they can support their school’s athletic programs, serve their community, set a positive example for younger students, and add to the gameday experience.

This year, they’ve led several initiatives, including leading See You at the Pole and speaking to younger athletes at the junior

high about staying away from drugs and making healthy choices. “They felt it was important to start talking to the younger students about some challenges they may be facing, will be facing, or have faced in

regards to drug use,” Adams said. “They wanted to offer some support to their fellow GISD students, to let them know they are here to help them in any way—especially when it comes to making decisions about drug use and peer pressure.”

Most recently, the ALC held a Thanksgiving Food Drive at the high school, and with a friendly competition between classes, they managed to bring in a total of 700 pounds of food for VISTO. The ALC has big plans for the future of not only GHS athletics, but for the future of Gainesville High School!

A Salute to Our Veterans:

HONORING SERVICE AND SACRIFICE

n Tuesday, November 11th, Gainesville Junior High hosted a heartfelt Veterans Day Program to honor the brave men and women of the armed forces. This event not only paid tribute to veterans and active duty service members but also provided students with insights into military opportunities they may consider after graduation. Each veteran shared personal stories and reflections on their time in the military.

The guests of honor included: Cathie Ary- GJH counselor (Captain with 6 years in the U.S. Air Force) Kevin Bentley- GJH teacher (Sergeant with 15 years in the U.S. Air Force) Keith Kelley- GJH teacher (U.S. Army for 3 years & the remaining years in the Texas Army National Guard) Michael Schadegg- GJH teacher (U.S. Navy for 3 years & recognized with the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for his role in an expedition to the Persian Gulf.)

The program began with a rendition of the National Anthem performed by the GJH Choir, directed by Meghan Reeves. The Student Council members introduced each veteran, showcasing their wonderful accomplishments in respect for their service.

In the days leading up to Veterans Day, students engaged in classroom instruction about the holiday’s significance and how it differs from Memorial Day. They learned about important traditions, including the histories of the six military branches.

Josh Kelly, Principal of GJH, noted the educational value of the week leading up to Veterans Day. “It was a great introduction for our students to learn about post high school opportunities in the military,” he said.

During the program, each honored veteran spoke about their branch of service, sharing insights about their enlistment, training, and experiences in the field.

Michael Schadegg recounted his time aboard the USS New Jersey, the most decorated battleship in Navy history, while Cathie Ary reflected on her leadership role during operations in Desert Storm. Their stories provided inspiration and highlighted how military service shaped their lives.

Principal Kelly concluded the program with a heartfelt expression of gratitude for the veterans’ contributions and the opportunity to celebrate their service. “We are so grateful to be able to host this event; it has been wonderful to see our student body come together to honor the service of their own teachers and staff,” he remarked.

The program left an enduring impact on all students and staff of GJH. As Gainesville Junior High upholds this meaningful tradition, the success of the Veterans Day Program will inspire future generations to honor those who serve our nation.

Unleashing Curiosity Highlights from Our Annual Fall STEAM Night

T

his year's Annual Fall STEAM Night was a resounding success, offering an exciting array of activities designed for students of all ages, all completely free of charge.

Our mission was to engage and inspire young minds across various fields, including mathematics, computer science, computational thinking, robotics, chemistry, physics, environmental biology, and creative nutrition. We were thrilled to welcome over 300 participants, including GISD students and their families.

A standout feature of the evening was the interactive culinary experience provided by our talented Discovery Kitchens chefs, led by Kelsey Baldwin, with the enthusiastic support of GHS culinary student volunteers. Families enjoyed two hands-on cooking activities, beginning with a baked potato bar that boasted a myriad of delicious topping options. Meanwhile, the interactive drink station captivated students as they combined candy and baking soda with lemonade, watching the fizzy concoction come to life right before their eyes.

The STEAM stations this year embraced an exciting mix of themes, including physics, mathematics, coding, robotics, sound waves, calculators, car racing, measurement, art, chemistry, and engineering. Each young participant received a lab sheet to document their journey through the various stations, which they could turn in upon completion for a prize at the prize table.

Here’s a glimpse of the engaging activities we offered: • Ant Engineering: Students examined ants in a fascinating ant farm using magnifying glasses, constructed ant models, and tested their strength with weights.

• Slope and Direction Math: With calculators generously donated by Texas Instruments, students calculated slopes using graphs and a depth-measuring machine.

• Texas Wildlife Association Trunk: This special traveling trunk featured authentic furs and skulls from native Texas wildlife, captivating students with hands-on learning.

• Salt Absorption Art: Armed with glue, salt, and watercolor pens, students crafted vibrant artworks as the colors spread through the salt.

• Car Distance Measurement: Small cars, ramps, and measuring tape provided a fun way to explore concepts of speed and distance.

• Bird Feeder Making: Participants constructed bird feeders using ice cream cones and Crisco, blending creativity with environmental awareness.

• Scissor Lift Rides: Casey Chesser, the talent acquisition director at Crossland Construction, delighted students with exhilarating rides on a scissor lift throughout the evening.

Sound Mapping: Students created sound maps while listening to various environments using Chromebooks and headphones, enhancing their auditory skills.

Screaming Balloons: The Boys and Girls Club led an engaging physics activity using balloons and noisemakers, creating an exciting atmosphere.

Robotics Demonstrations: Robotics students from three campuses showcased their innovative creations and even allowed younger students to take the controls.

Ocean Sensory Bin: This handson station was a hit with younger children, who eagerly explored seashells and ocean creatures.

None of this would have been possible without the efforts of our GHS student volunteers, who represented the Key Club, education career courses, culinary arts, and National Honor Society. Their commitment played a vital role in the event's success.

his fall, Chartwells K12, Gainesville ISD’s Child Nutrition provider, introduced an exciting new program across all cafeterias called Dip’N to Flavor. Whether it’s crispy chicken tenders, crunchy veggie sticks, or cheesy breadsticks, all perfectly paired with creamy ranch, Korean BBQ, or sriracha honey mustard, Dip'N to Flavor transforms everyday favorites into lunchtime adventures with new dips for every taste bud. Research on dip sauces indicates a growing market driven by snacking habits, health trends, and the exploration of diverse flavors. Consumers, especially younger demographics, are eager to try new and international flavors such as gochujang and chimichurri. With this insight, we seized every opportunity to introduce new and exciting dips that kids will love!

Dip'N into the Cafeterias National School Lunch Week, held from October 14-17, offered a fantastic opportunity to try new menu items in the cafeterias, with this year’s theme being “Taste the World.” Each day featured a new item from a different country, paired with a regionally inspired dipping sauce. For example, our journey to China introduced "Char Siu" Chinese BBQ Style Pork accompanied by a Szechuan Dipping Sauce. A trip to the Caribbean brought Jerk Chicken Wings with a Chimichurri Ranch Dipping Sauce, among many other delightful offerings. Dips provide an inexpensive way to keep existing menu items fresh and exciting. Beyond special events and promotions, the Dip'N Sauces are available in all schools, so be sure to keep an eye on the menus for your favorite dipping sauces!

Dip'N into Culinary Competitions On Friday, October 17, game day got even tastier with our inaugural Culinary Football Eats Smackdown! Advanced culinary students from the Gainesville High School Culinary Program showcased their skills, creativity, and school pride in a friendly competition held on the district Food Truck. Each team, which consisted of Team Girls and Team Boys, created their own menus, complete with names and pricing for game day. Each team was encouraged to create a sauce to elevate the overall experience and align with our Dip'N Sauce theme.

On the Menu for the Boys was “Leopard Pawprint Smash Burger” with a signature homemade burger sauce served with Leopard Loaded Fries. On the Menu for the Girls was “Leopard-dilla” with a homemade seasoned sour cream drizzle and Leopard Spots Cake Pops.

Despite the amazing teamwork from all culinary students, the boys emerged victorious, earning the title of Culinary Football Eats Smackdown Champions by selling the most smash burgers!

Dip'N into an Exclusive Sauce for Gainesville ISD Following the Culinary Football Eats Smackdown, the boys’ team submitted their signature sauce named the “Leopard Everything Sauce” to the Chartwells K12 corporate chefs for transformation into a usable recipe to be featured on the menu, making it a signature item for Gainesville ISD! We expect this recipe to roll out by spring. We are incredibly proud of our inspiring young chefs!
