January always brings a mix of energy and indulgence, and this month’s theme captures that perfectly. From the art of fine dining to the restaurants that highlight seasonal fare, this issue is designed to inspire your next night out — or maybe even a secret one in. If you love the allure of speakeasies, you’re in luck. We’ve rounded up some of the most intriguing hidden gems where craft cocktails, dim lighting, and good company come together for unforgettable evenings. It’s a toast to the creativity and charm that make our local dining scene shine. Of course, January is also a time for connection — gathering around the table, celebrating love, and sharing community spirit. You’ll find stories that highlight the people and places behind Denton County’s vibrant culture, from restaurants reimagining comfort food to local events that bring families together. And just around the corner comes one of our favorite issues of the year — The Pet Issue! Every year, we dedicate an entire edition to the furry, feathered, and four-legged friends that fill our homes (and hearts) with unconditional love. We want to see your pets shine! Send us your favorite photos for a chance to have them featured in next month’s issue — whether it’s your dog’s biggest smile, your cat’s sassiest pose, your hamster’s heroic moment on the wheel, or maybe it’s a special little fur-baby you have lost — send them to us! Here’s to a year filled with laughter, flavor, and new memories. Thank you for letting us be part of your story — and for making our community the truly special place it is.

TRANSFORMING WOMEN INTO

CONFIDENT by Murray Media Group | photos courtesy of Girls Who Fight

“Martial arts changed my life,” Gemma said. “It gave me confidence that I could succeed and overcome anything. That’s what I wanted to pass on — skills that build not just physical strength, but self-belief.” Redefining Women’s Self-Defense

W

hen former MMA fighter Gemma Sheehan hung up her gloves, she knew her journey with martial arts was far from over. What began as a career in competitive fighting — where she earned a 5–1 record and became Ontario, Canada’s, top-ranked female MMA Fighter — evolved into something far more profound.

What sets Girls Who Fight apart is its laser focus on women’s safety. While most martial arts programs are designed for

Gemma had discovered the real fight wasn’t inside the cage. It was giving women and girls the confidence and tools to protect themselves in real life. In 2017, Gemma founded Girls Who Fight, a training center dedicated exclusively to women’s and girls’ self-defense. The mission was simple yet revolutionary: create a safe, empowering space where women could learn practical, effective skills from mixed martial arts — without the intimidation or competition-driven focus of traditional martial arts gyms. 12 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE

| ISSUE 01 | JAN 16 - FEB 20, 2026

men and competitive athletes, Gemma’s approach is built entirely around the real-world situations women face. FBI data shows that 89% of sexual assault victims are female and that women are disproportionately targeted for violence. At Girls Who Fight, the curriculum tackles those realities head-on. The Women’s Self Defense Beginner Course, the studio’s most popular program, is a 6-week series teaching defenses for common attacks and how to use awareness, boundary-setting, and verbal strategies. Each class is taught in a positive and supportive environment — where beginners feel welcomed from day one. “Every class feels like having fun with your best friends,” Gemma shares. “The energy, the friendships, the laughter—it’s not just training. It’s community and transformation.” Safe Space for Growth & Connection What Gemma treasures most about her work isn’t just the skills her students master — it’s the community that forms within the walls of Girls Who Fight. “We’ve created a culture where every woman who walks in feels seen and supported,” she explains. “There are no cliques, no egos, no intimidation—just women lifting each other up.” LiveLocalMagazines.com

That sense of connection often leads to profound personal breakthroughs. Students have shared how their training gave them the courage to set boundaries, speak up in uncomfortable situations, and even feel safer walking alone at night. “You see it in their posture, their tone, their energy,” Gemma said. “They carry themselves differently — like they finally believe in their own strength.” One of Gemma’s most memorable stories comes from a recent Beginner course graduate named Courtney, who survived an abduction before joining the program. “Girls Who Fight has truly been life-changing for me. After experiencing a situation where my safety was seriously threatened, I struggled with confidence, trust in myself, and a lingering sense of powerlessness that kept me feeling stuck. From the very first class of the beginner course, Gemma created an incredibly empowering and safe space to grow. She is not only knowledgeable and skilled but also deeply supportive, making sure everyone feels strong, capable, and in control. Her teaching goes beyond physical techniques, it’s about rebuilding confidence, trust, and a sense of personal power. With every lesson, I feel more empowered, more capable, and more excited for life again after an event that left me feeling pretty helpless.” Courtney is still training one year later, pursuing mastery of women’s self defense and safety skills that she can one day teach others. LiveLocalMagazines.com

A Mission That Grows with the Community Over the years, Girls Who Fight has grown into one of the largest women’s-only

self-defense programs in the world, sur-

passing 100 active students. The studio

recently launched a Leadership Program, helping girls develop character, confi-

dence, and leadership skills alongside their self-defense training.

Their youth programs — Girls (6-14) and Teens (14-17) — focus on building “su-

perhero-level confidence” through self defense and character development training. Beyond the physical benefits, the lessons instill self-discipline, respect, focus, re-

silience, and the belief that strength and kindness can coexist.

Gemma’s impact has not gone unnoticed— she was recently honored with a State of

Texas Resolution from the House of Representatives recognizing her dedication

She’s equally proud of her students’ everyday victories—like one teen who overcame her fear of performing in front of a crowd, another who earned a spot on the state band team, and a third who finally stood tall giving a class presentation. All of which credited their training at Girls Who Fight to “Stand Like A Champion.” “Those are the moments that matter most,” Gemma said. “It’s not just about defending yourself physically — it’s about knowing you can handle anything life throws your way.” From local classes to global impact, Girls Who Fight continues to redefine what empowerment looks like. It’s more than a studio — it’s a movement that turns fear into strength, and uncertainty into confidence. Gemma puts it best: “We’re not just teaching self-defense—we’re transforming women into skilled, confident protectors.”

to the safety and wellbeing of women and girls across the region.

Empowering a Global Movement Girls Who Fight’s influence extends far

beyond the studio. After one of Gemma’s

videos demonstrating a hair-grab defense went viral — earning over 18 million views — the studio’s online presence exploded,

reaching 330,000 followers on Instagram and 165,000 on TikTok. Through social

media, Gemma has been able to inspire

women around the world to take self-defense into their own hands.

When it comes to redefining dental and esthetic care in North Texas, ROOT – Periodontal and Implant Centers stands as a true example of innovation, compassion, and growth. Founded in 2013 by Dr. Amit Patel, ROOT has evolved from two local offices into one of the largest periodontal groups in Texas, now boasting seven locations across the DFW metroplex.

Dr . Amit M. Patel

TRANSFORMING

Smiles & Lives AC RO S S D F W Dr. Patel’s

journey began after several years as an associate periodontist. Motivated by his parents’ unwavering support and belief in his potential, he purchased his first two practices and rebranded them under the ROOT name. His vision was clear from the start — to create a patient-centered practice that combined cutting-edge technology with personalized, compassionate care. As the practice flourished, so did its reach. In 2018, ROOT acquired another office, and over the following years, continued to expand — almost one new location per year. Alongside his business partner, Dr. Paras Patel, Dr. Patel also co-founded the Center for Oral Pathology in 2022, which has quickly grown into one of the largest specialty groups of its kind in North America. In 2024, ROOT entered a new chapter with the launch of ROOT Med Spa, expanding its expertise into esthetic and wellness services. This addition has allowed ROOT to integrate oral health, beauty, and confidence under one trusted brand. At the heart of ROOT’s philosophy is a people-first approach. Dr. Patel firmly believes that taking care of his team is just as vital as taking care of patients. “A thriving, motivated team creates an environment where patients feel seen, valued, and supported,”

14 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE

he said. This dedication has cultivated a strong company culture rooted in empathy, growth, and excellence — one that extends to every patient interaction. ROOT’s success is also built on a foundation of innovation. The team integrates advanced technology and modern techniques that many other practices have yet to adopt, ensuring precision and comfort at every stage of care. From same-day emergency appointments to comprehensive, custom treatment plans, ROOT prioritizes accessibility, safety, and results. “We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all philosophy,” Dr. Patel said. “Every patient deserves care that is tailored to their unique needs.”

However, growth hasn’t been without challenges. Rapid expansion has required flexibility and a willingness to learn. Dr. Patel and his leadership team have refined systems, improved efficiencies, and reinforced a company-wide commitment to high performance. “We don’t accept

| ISSUE 01 | JAN 16 - FEB 20, 2026

mediocrity,” he emphasizes. “Our patients deserve the best, and that starts with having the best people.” Another major milestone came when ROOT began partnering with insurance providers. Recognizing how important affordability is to many patients, they took steps to become in-network with several insurance plans — making quality care more accessible to the community. For Dr. Patel, the most rewarding part of his work is seeing the profound difference his team makes in people’s lives. “There’s an incredible satisfaction that comes from saving someone’s teeth after they’ve been told by another provider that extraction is their only option,” he said. “It’s not just about restoring smiles — it’s about restoring confidence, function, and dignity.” He recalls one particularly meaningful story about a patient in his thirties who had been told he needed all of his teeth removed. Using advanced laser periodontal surgery (LANAP), Dr. Patel and his team were able to save every tooth. Years later, the patient still comes in for routine cleanings — a living testament to the power of innovation and compassionate care. “He’s so grateful,” Dr. Patel says. “It’s amazing to see the impact we can make when we give people hope.” LiveLocalMagazines.com

When asked what advice he would offer to those starting their own business, Dr. Patel’s answer is simple: follow your passion and invest in people. “Make sure it’s an industry you love,” he said. “Build a strong team around you, stay true to your values, and never stop growing.” With a focus on compassion, innovation,

Hobby New

New Year

LEARN SOMETHING AWESOME ONLINE

by Madison Reed

i

t’s a brand-new year — time for resolutions that actually stick! This could be the year you learn to juggle, bake a sourdough loaf that doesn’t resemble a doorstop, or speak Italian well enough to order gelato without shame. Luckily, the internet is basically a magic hobby buffet, offering everything from guitar lessons to watercolor painting...and yes, even interpretive dance tutorials from the privacy of your living room. Here’s where to start your journey toward a more interesting you.

1. YOUTUBE (FREE)

2. SKILLSHARE (FROM $14/MO.)

Let’s start with the obvious: YouTube. This sprawling, slightly chaotic video library has tutorials for just about anything you can imagine — and probably some things you can’t. Want to knit a scarf while simultaneously doing yoga? There’s a video for that. Thinking of learning how to fix your bike while your cat judges you? There’s a channel for that, too. The beauty of YouTube is it’s free, you can binge tutorials, and you can watch professionals or adorable amateurs make the same mistakes you probably will. YouTube.com

Skillshare is like the Spotify of hobbies, but instead of music, you get thousands of classes taught by real humans who seem to know what they’re doing. Photography, creative writing, cooking, coding, even making your own kombucha — the list is almost absurdly long. We recommend it for its bite-sized classes that let you learn at your own pace without feeling like you need a full semester commitment. Plus, the projects at the end of each class give you that satisfying “I actually made something” feeling, even if it’s just a slightly crooked cake. SkillShare.com

3. MASTERCLASS (FROM $15/MO. W/ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION) MasterClass takes online learning to the celebrity level — yes, you can learn filmmaking from Martin Scorsese, cooking from Gordon Ramsay, or tennis from Serena Williams. It’s expensive-ish, but if your resolution is “learn from the best,” this is the place. Each class feels like a combination of TED Talk, motivational speech, and inside scoop from someone who is really, really good at their craft. Honestly, just watching these classes makes you feel cooler, even if your first attempt at pasta ends up looking like rubber bands. MasterClass.com 18 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE

4. COURSERA (MANY FREE, CERTIFICATE PRICES VARY) If you want to combine a hobby with a bit of brain power, Coursera offers courses from universities around the world. From digital photography to creative writing, and even gardening and mixology, you can earn a certificate while learning something fun — or at least something that will impress your friends at parties. Coursera is perfect for the hobbyist who also wants a little structure, deadlines, and maybe a tiny dose of academic prestige. Coursera.org 5. UDEMY (TYPICALLY $10–$20/COURSE ON SALE) Udemy is a treasure trove for hobbyists on a budget. The platform regularly has sales where courses that once cost hundreds of dollars drop to pocket-change prices. Whether you want to learn watercolor painting, play the ukulele, or create a tiny robot army, Udemy has a course. The instructors vary, but the reviews help you separate gems from… well, less polished attempts. It’s a place to experiment, explore, and sometimes fail gloriously — all without leaving your couch. Udemy.com 6. DOMESTIKA (FREE AND PAID COURSES FROM 99¢)

Top 3

Hobby Kits to Try in 2026

Perfect for relaxing evenings, creating gifts, or finally mastering that granny square blanket you’ve been dreaming about. THE CRAFTER’S BOX: ELEVATE YOUR CRAFT GAME TheCraftersBox.com — from $39/mo. High-quality materials and expert tutorials for creative projects like weaving, leatherwork, or ceramics. Each month feels like an art class delivered straight to your doorstep—without the intimidating studio fees.

Domestika is the artsy cousin in the online learning family. It specializes in creative pursuits: illustration, design, photography, crafts, and more. The production quality is beautiful, the projects are inspiring, and you get to peek into the workflow of creatives from around the globe. This is the place to go if you want your new hobby to feel aesthetically satisfying as well as fun. Domestika.org

SKETCHBOX: UNLOCK YOUR INNER ARTIST GetSketchBox.com — from $25/mo. Monthly art supply kits for drawing, painting, or calligraphy. Every box comes with curated materials and inspiration to explore your creativity without hunting for supplies. Ideal for beginners and experienced artists alike.

Hobbies aren’t just ways to fill time — they’re little acts of self-love. So this year, try something new. Take a class, watch a tutorial, bake a questionable cake, or open that subscription box and follow along. Because the best thing about learning a hobby online is that the journey is all yours. How 2026 Looks to Be a Year of Shared Moments by Madison Reed

There’s something special about the energy heading into 2026 —

and here in Denton County, that excitement already feels larger than life. From global sporting events landing right in our backyard to rare national milestones and sky-watching moments, the year ahead is packed with reasons to gather, celebrate, and feel proud to call North Texas home.

February 6–22, 2026

The biggest headline of the year arrives in early summer, when the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off on June 11 and runs through July 19, 2026. AT&T Stadium in Arlington will host multiple matches throughout the tournament, putting DFW at the center of the world’s most-watched sporting event.

The year kicks off with the 2026 Winter Olympics, running February 6–22, 2026, from Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. While the Games unfold overseas, the Olympic spirit will be alive and well in North Texas — especially during chilly February evenings made for gathering around big screens.

For locals, this means weeks of international energy — visitors from around the globe, packed patios and watch parties, cultural festivals, and spontaneous celebrations across the Metroplex. Even non-soccer fans will feel the buzz as the region embraces its role as a global host.

20 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE

Expect local sports bars, recreation centers, and community organizations to lean into the moment with watch parties, themed events, and youth programming inspired by everything from figure skating to snowboarding. There’s something uniquely unifying about cheering on Team USA together.

| ISSUE 01 | JAN 16 - FEB 20, 2026

One of the most meaningful milestones of the year arrives on July 4, 2026, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Known as the U.S. Semiquincentennial, this historic anniversary will be commemorated throughout the year, with especially robust celebrations expected around Independence Day. Across DFW, communities are planning expanded fireworks shows, patriotic concerts, museum exhibitions, historical programs, and civic events that highlight both our nation’s past and its future. It’s a once-in-a-generation anniversary — and one we’ll experience together.

LiveLocalMagazines.com

A Year of Momentum for North Texas With Denton County Leading the Way Beyond marquee events, 2026 continues North Texas’ steady momentum — and Denton County communities are playing a major role. Across the county, cities are investing in spaces that bring people together. In Denton, ongoing downtown enhancements and arts programming continue to build on the city’s creative reputation, with festivals, live music, and community events expected to see increased attendance as regional tourism grows. Lewisville continues to energize its Old Town district. Communities like Flower Mound and Highland Village are expanding trails, recreational programming, and family-friendly gathering spaces, while Argyle and Lantana continue to blend thoughtful growth with small-town character through new schools, parks, and community events. Countywide, libraries, cultural centers, and local nonprofits are planning expanded programming in 2026 to meet the moment — from patriotic exhibits tied to America’s 250th to globally inspired events reflecting the World Cup’s international flair. Major concert tours, regional festivals, and visiting events are also expected to ripple northward from Dallas and Fort Worth, giving Denton County residents front-row access without leaving our own community.

LiveLocalMagazines.com

Together Is the Theme of 2026 What makes 2026 so special isn’t just the events themselves — it’s how they bring us together. Whether you’re cheering during a World Cup match in June, watching Olympic moments in February, celebrating America’s 250th birthday in July, or stepping outside for a rare eclipse in August, this is a year built on shared moments. In DFW — and especially across Denton County — 2026 isn’t just something to look forward to. It’s a year we’ll experience side by side, one unforgettable moment at a time.

“This project is about so much more than a building,” said Toni Johnson-Simpson, MSW, Executive Director of DCFOF.

“We’re creating a launchpad for growth, healing, and generational change.”

The groundbreaking drew more than 200 community members and local leaders, including representatives from Denton

County government, law enforcement, city officials, and major community donors.

Their presence signaled not only broad

support but also a shared belief that safety and healing should never be out of reach for anyone in need.

vision of the Family Justice Center. Once complete, the FJC will stand as a beacon

of hope and collaboration, strengthening the safety net for individuals and families across the county.

connection and compassion

Beyond groundbreaking events and new facilities, DCFOF’s impact is felt daily

through its wide range of free services. These include a 24-hour crisis line, two emergency shelters, legal advocacy,

counseling, play therapy for children, and specialized support programs like the Battering Intervention & Prevention Program (BIPP).

For teens, the organization offers activity

therapy and educational programs aimed at breaking cycles of abuse and fostering resilience. Through its Survivor Advocacy

Team (SAT), DCFOF ensures that survivors receive immediate and compassionate

support, often meeting them in hospitals or at court.

Why

We Get Sick in Winter

by Murray Media Group

Most of us already know the basics of cold and flu prevention: wash your hands, cover coughs, stay home when you’re sick. But there are several oftenoverlooked habits that can make a meaningful difference. 28 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE

LiveLocalMagazines.com

A

s temperatures drop and calendars fill with holiday gatherings, school events, and cozy nights indoors, something else reliably makes its annual appearance: colds and the flu. While we may joke about “that winter bug going around,” the science behind why illness spreads more easily this time of year is surprisingly straightforward — and knowing it can help you stay healthier all season long. First, there’s proximity. During the winter months, we spend significantly more time indoors, often in enclosed spaces with limited ventilation. Homes are sealed up to keep warm air in, windows stay closed, and offices, classrooms, gyms, and airplanes become shared ecosystems. Viruses that cause colds and influenza spread primarily through respiratory droplets and aerosols, which circulate more easily in stagnant indoor air. The more people in one space, the more opportunities those germs have to move from person to person.

Cold weather itself also plays a role. Lower humidity levels — common during winter due to cold air and indoor heating — allow viruses to survive longer in the air and on surfaces. At the same time, dry air can irritate nasal passages, weakening one of the body’s first lines of defense against infection. When the mucous membranes in your nose dry out, they’re less effective at trapping and eliminating pathogens before they enter your system. Then there’s the immune system factor. Shorter days mean less sunlight, which can lead to lower vitamin D levels — a nutrient that plays a key role in immune function. Add in seasonal stress, disrupted sleep schedules, indulgent holiday eating, and packed social calendars, and it’s no wonder our bodies can feel a little run down just when we need them to be at their strongest.

LiveLocalMagazines.com

Uncommon Tips to Avoid the Common Cold

1. 1. 2. 3. 3. 4. 5. 5. 6. 6.

One of the most effective (and least discussed) tools is air quality. Improving ventilation in your home and workplace helps reduce the concentration of airborne viruses. Cracking a window for even a few minutes a day, running ceiling fans, or using HEPA air purifiers in high-traffic areas can significantly improve indoor air circulation. During gatherings, opening doors or windows briefly between guests can help “refresh” the air without making the space uncomfortable. Hydration is another quiet powerhouse. We tend to drink less water in winter because we’re not sweating as much or feeling thirsty, but staying well-hydrated keeps mucous membranes moist and more effective at blocking germs. Warm beverages like herbal teas, broths, and even warm water with lemon count — and often feel more appealing on cold days. Your sleep routine matters more than you might think. Consistent, quality sleep strengthens immune response and helps your body fight off infections before symptoms fully develop. Aim for a regular bedtime, limit late-night screen time, and create a calming nighttime ritual — especially during busy holiday weeks when sleep is often sacrificed. Pay attention to the small, shared items in daily life. Phones, remote controls, steering wheels, reusable water bottles, gym equipment, and handbags are frequently touched but rarely cleaned. A quick daily wipe-down of these high-contact items can reduce exposure more than obsessively disinfecting every surface in your home. Nutrition also plays a preventative role beyond the usual advice to “eat healthy.” Prioritize foods rich in zinc, vitamin C, and probiotics — such as citrus fruits, yogurt, kefir, nuts, seeds, and fermented vegetables — which support immune health. Soups and stews aren’t just comfort food; they’re often nutrient-dense, hydrating, and easy for the body to process when energy is low. Finally, give yourself permission to rest and reset. Chronic stress suppresses immune function, making it easier for viruses to take hold. Whether it’s a short walk outside, a few minutes of deep breathing, or saying no to one extra obligation, small acts of self-care add up to real protection.

Winter colds and flus may be common, but they’re not inevitable. By understanding why this season challenges our immune systems — and by adopting a few thoughtful, lesser-known habits — you can move through winter feeling healthier, more energized, and ready to enjoy everything the season has to offer. and long-term functional stability, disciplines that increasingly overlap with airway and sleep health. This combination of heart and high performance led the practice to be named Best Family Dental Practice in Best of Denton County by Murray Media and Best Cosmetic Dentist by Living Magazine’s Readers’ Choice two years in a row. This year, the practice was chosen as a finalist for Best Family Dental Practice, Best General Dentist, and Best Cosmetic Dentist in Best of Denton County. Accolades aside, Dr. Prentice is considered a respected voice in digital dentistry. As the creator of The Prentice Process, a national training platform and app for doctors learning to integrate advanced technology into their practices, he speaks, teaches, and consults with his peers nationwide. His education and consulting now include how bite forces, jaw position, and airway dynamics intersect—especially in complex restorative cases.

CONSERVATIVE BY NATURE, DATA-DRIVEN BY DESIGN Patients don’t just get “what’s broken” fixed. They get a full-scope analysis. Why did the tooth break in the first place? Was it bite pressure, grinding, poor materials, or time? What will prevent the same issue from happening again? Often, that investigation extends beyond the tooth to nighttime clenching, restricted airflow, or airway-related stress patterns that manifest as worn enamel, headaches, or restless sleep. This thoughtful, engineered approach to dentistry makes patients feel heard, involved, and confident. “Your mouth is a reflection of how you’ve been using it,” he says. “Our job is to LiveLocalMagazines.com

understand the ‘why’ behind every case, so we can build solutions that last.”

BUILT FOR FAMILIES. RESPECTED BY PEERS. DRIVEN BY VISION. From digital X-rays enhanced with Overjet AI to iTero Lumina scanning that replaces messy impressions with quick, high-resolution imaging, the systems at Prentice Dental are designed to educate, empower, and engage. Technology, however, is merely a tool. For families, that philosophy now includes airway-focused evaluations for everyone. Dr. Prentice is trained in guided growth

concepts for kids during critical developmental years and offers airway-aware solutions for adults, including collaboration with sleep physicians and oral appliance therapy when appropriate. Whether he’s training dentists or helping local families regain their smiles, dignity, comfort, Dr. Prentice remains focused on the same mission — care that is proactive, personal, and precise.

MORNING ROUTINE MASTER YOUR

by Murray Media

The way you start your morning can shape everything that follows. Small, intentional habits — done consistently — can help you feel more energized, focused, and in control before life starts pulling you in a dozen directions. These simple morning practices are designed to set the tone for a calmer, more productive day. 32 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE

Set a Regular Bedtime

Soak Up The Sun

Meditate

Good mornings start the night before. Falling asleep and waking up on a consistent schedule is essential to reset your internal clock. After a few weeks, it will be easier to wake up without feeling groggy.

Getting at least 30 minutes of sun before 9 am heavily impacts our circadian rhythm, the sleep-wake cycle that repeats every 24 hours. Sunlight stimulates cortisol and serotonin, which are associated with adrenaline and happiness, respectively.

Create a space for reflection that is free of distraction with guided morning meditation. The goal is to focus your mind before the chaos of the day begins so that you can approach any situation rationally and calmly.

Quit the Snooze Button

Get To Work Early

Did you know that hitting the snooze button when your alarm goes off can have negative psychological effects? “Five more minutes” turns into ten more minutes turns into fifteen more minutes, which tells your subconscious that your commitments aren’t important. It’s time to start the day off right by jumping out of bed when your alarm clock rings.

Save yourself the unnecessary stress of being late to work. Yes, you will have to wake up earlier, but there are more positives than negatives to this. For one, you’ll beat the traffic before it even begins, giving you time to grab a coffee or breakfast on the way. You’ll also show yourself and your superiors that you are committed to your career.

Make Your Bed

Review Your Top 3 Tasks

Starting your day off with an accomplishment generates positive energy. And what’s even better than leaving the house

The night before, write down three things you want to accomplish that day. Planning for the day ahead is an effective decision-making skill that will make you feel less overwhelmed as the day goes on.

with a clean room is coming home to one!

Eat Something Light and Healthy

Get the Blood Flowing Opt for a 5-minute stretch session or a brisk walk to wake your body up. Exercise releases endorphins that will boost your mood throughout the day!

Everyone knows that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But what’s most critical is the type of food you consume in the morning. Something small, light, high in protein, and full of complex carbs will keep your mind sharp and your body energized.

Hydrate Keep a bottle of water next to your bed to easily rehydrate when you wake up. When we’re asleep for the night, our body becomes dehydrated because we obviously can’t drink water in our sleep. LiveLocalMagazines.com

One of the most compelling picks this year is Behr’s “Hidden Gem,” described as a “smoky jade” — a deep, bluegreen hue that is muted yet rich, and built to stand the test of time. Here’s how you, as a homeowner in North Texas, can bring Hidden Gem (or one of the other 2026 leading shades) into your house thoughtfully and stylishly:

Choose Your Delivery Before you grab a paint roller, decide how bold you want to be. A deep shade like Hidden Gem can either dominate a room as an accent or work as an all-over color if balanced well with lighter tones. For example:

•

Use it on a single focal wall, built-in cabinetry, or a cozy reading nook.

•

Consider painting the lower half of a room or the backs of bookshelves — letting texture and lighting do the rest.

•

Pair it with crisp off-whites, warm metallics, or natural wood finishes to keep it grounded and welcoming.

Let the Natural Light Help In our North Texas homes, light shifts dramatically throughout the day. Hidden

Gem reacts beautifully to sunlight, revealing teal-green undertones in the morning and deeper blue tones in the evening. Before committing:

•

Test a large swatch on multiple walls over a couple of days.

•

Notice how the color changes with both electric

•

Make sure the tone complements your flooring

lighting and natural light.

(wood, tile, carpet) and key furnishings (sofa, dining set, curtains).

Enhance With Complementary Accents Because Hidden Gem is rich and saturated, pairing it with the right accents will create balance instead of contrast.

Some ideas:

•

Choose brass or brushed gold hardware and fixtures — the warm metal pops beautifully against the hue.

•

Add textured pillows or throws in oatmeal,

•

Incorporate natural elements like teak wood,

champagne, or rust to tie the room together. woven baskets, or care-style accents to reinforce the “grounded elegance” that designers are talking about for 2026.

Apply Strategically Room by Room Living Room: Frame a fireplace wall or TV wall in Hidden Gem, then use lighter tones on adjacent walls. Kitchen/Dining Area: Paint cabinets or an island in the shade — keep walls neutral for balance. Bedroom: Use Hidden Gem on the wall behind the bed, paired with crisp linens and warm wood accents for a serene atmosphere. Exterior/Front Door: A deep jewel tone like this can give instant curb appeal while remaining timeless. Powder Room or Hallway: Smaller spaces are perfect for a color-drenched moment without overwhelming.

Be Ready for the Long Haul The best part about using a color selected for “2026” is that it’s designed to last beyond one season. That means:

•

Invest in quality paint with proper finish and coverage to avoid frequent touch-ups.

•

Resist the pull to oversaturate with trend accessories — instead use flexible, long-term accents.

•

Document your color choice and paint order (brand, exact formula) so you can easily match it in future rooms if you expand the palette.

Final Thoughts 2026 isn’t just about using new colors — it’s about intentional living, grounded elegance, and spaces that reflect you. Whether you go full Hidden Gem, choose one of the variety-of-brand alternatives (deep reds, creamy neutrals, or rich greens), or simply use the idea as inspiration, the end goal is the same — a home that feels refreshed and personal. Want to chat ideas, view large sample swatches, or see how this shade pairs in a real room here in the local area? We’d love to hear from you — your home, your style, your choice.

Because Hidden Gem is rich and saturated, pairing it with the right accents will create balance instead of contrast. LiveLocalMagazines.com

Here’s to a year of color, comfort, and meaningful design.

Stronger

together Why Couples Who Sweat Together Stay Together

Valentine’s Day often comes with the same familiar question: how do you show someone you care? Candy disappears, flowers fade, but shared experiences last. This year, consider a gift that strengthens both your relationship and your health — working out together. by Jesse J. Leyva, Owner of Outlaw Fitcamp

R

esearch continues to show that couples who exercise together build stronger connections, and at Jesse James Fit & Outlaw FitCamp, we see those results every day. When partners train side by side, the benefits extend far beyond the gym. Some of the advantages of working out together include:

Shared Goals Create Stronger Bonds

Committing to fitness together means supporting each other through every challenge and win. Pursuing a common goal encourages teamwork and brings couples closer.

New Experiences Strengthen Connection

Positive Outlet for Stress

Trying something new as a couple builds trust and closeness. Learning fresh workouts with a personal trainer adds excitement and helps deepen your connection.

A “gym date” offers a healthy way to release stress. Exercising together boosts mood, lowers tension, and helps keep everyday frustrations from spilling into your relationship.

UNT FOOTBALL FINISHES HISTORIC SEASON WITH DRAMATIC NEW MEXICO BOWL VICTORY by Craig Hewitt | photos courtesy of Zach Del Bello, UNT Athletics

T

he University of North Texas football program made history this season, culminating in a thrilling 49-47 victory over San Diego State in the New Mexico Bowl. With this win, the Mean Green capped off their first-ever 12-win season, finishing with an impressive record of 12-2. Under the leadership of second-year head coach Eric Morris, the team set a new single-season school record for victories, surpassing all previous Mean Green teams. North Texas entered the postseason ranked in the national Top 25, achieving not only its first bowl win since joining the American Athletic Conference but also securing back-to-back bowl appearances for the first time in school history. The 2025 New Mexico Bowl proved to be a nail-biter, with a total of 96 combined points. After building a commanding 42-20 lead by the end of the third quarter, North Texas faced a dramatic rally from the Aztecs in the final moments. The decisive moment came with a 31-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Drew Mestemaker to Cameron Dorner, reclaiming a 49-34 lead late in the fourth quarter. The Mean Green’s defense then rose to the occasion, halting San Diego State’s potential game-tying drive just seconds before the final whistle.

LiveLocalMagazines.com

Throughout the year, North Texas displayed one of the nation’s most potent passing attacks complemented by a relentless rushing game, chalking up an average of 512 yards per game. Mestemaker’s play at quarterback powered the attack, with the Mean Green surpassing 3,700 passing yards on the season and ranking among the top teams in the AAC through the air. In addition,

All-America running back Caleb Hawkins led the nation with 29 total touchdowns as a freshman. Unfortunately, both players have announced that they will enter the transfer portal, leaving their future with the team unlikely. As the Mean Green close out their 2025 season with a bowl trophy, a Top 25 ranking, and unprecedented success, questions remain about how the program will perform next year under new coach Neal Brown. However, even without their budding stars returning, the future looks bright for North Texas football as they continue to establish themselves as a powerhouse in the American Athletic Conference.

It ’s

GAME From the tailgate, to the final whistle, and everything in between. Put your game plan together for Football’s Favorite Sunday.

TIME!

1. REP THE TEAMS

Get your guests pumped for the big game with fan gear for each team. Party supply stores carry beaded necklaces, balloons, tutus, pom-poms, temporary tattoos, face paint, feather boas, wigs, and even life-size cut-outs of the players! Don’t be afraid to go all out and have fun!

2. PHOTO BOOTH

Carry on the costume fun with a photo station! There are tons of rental companies in DFW. You can even make a DIY setup with a ring light and an iPad. Add a football-themed backdrop, and you’re bound to be nominated MVP by your guests!

3. GAMEDAY EATS

Let’s be honest, the endless appetizers and finger food are what really steal the show. A classic arrangement of pigs-in-a-blanket, nachos, chili dogs, mac and cheese, wings, sliders, pizza, chips and salsa, and baked potatoes with all the fixings will surely keep everyone energized throughout the game.

4. BRING ON THE DRINKS

What’s an American sport without an American beverage? Grab a case (or two) of beers from the teams’ home cities, or make two cocktail options for each team based on their jersey colors. And for a non-alcoholic drink, Coca-Cola, of course!

5. DESSERT-GAME STRONG

Decorate a cake to resemble a football field! Bake a chocolate sheet cake. While you’re waiting, crush up some Oreos to sprinkle on top when the cake has finished baking. Wait for it to cool, then fill a pastry bag with green frosting, using a grass tip to replicate a turf field. Next, draw out the end lines and mark them with the appropriate numbers. Lastly, add any other football-themed decorations you want to it: mini field goals, footballs, football player figurines, and sprinkles for confetti!

6. FOOTBALL SQUARES

Squares is a popular betting game that uses a grid scoring system that randomly assigns each corresponding columns and rows a numerical value of 1-9. It’s fun to keep everyone engaged and excited throughout the entire game!

HOW TO PLAY: 1. Write one team’s name in the spaces on the X axis and the other on the Y axis. 2. Invite your guests to enter the pool by paying an entrance fee*. Each player locks-in their bet(s) by marking a box of their choice with their initials**. 3. Randomly assign each corresponding column and row a numerical value of 1-9. Start from left to right, using an online number picker to maintain fairness; then do the same from top to bottom. It’s important that all of this is completed BEFORE kickoff! 4. Now that your grid is complete, all you need to do is wait for the game to start! A winner will be determined by the score at the end of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Quarters, and at Final Game. Match the numbers on the grid with the last number (single digits) of each team’s score, and see which square is at the intersection of that row and column. For example, if the Red Team has a score of 23, the correct number you refer to is 3. 5. Winner payouts are typically 20% of the pot for Quarters 1-3 winners, and 40% for the Final Score Winner. Good luck, and may the best team win! *Depending on the stakes, either charge per box or split the grid evenly among the group for a general fee. **Determine the order of picks with a random drawing, or on a first-come-first-served basis.

Expert Tip

Ingredients

For a major flavor boost, we use some of the oil from the sun-dried tomatoes to sauté the chicken and mushrooms. You won’t need all of it for the dish. We save the remaining oil and add a pinch of dried herbs and red pepper flakes for a wonderful dipping oil for fresh bread.

1 7-oz. jar sun-dried tomatoes in oil, chopped or julienned 1½ lbs. chicken breast boneless, skinless, cut into bite-size pieces salt and pepper 2 tsp. oregano dried, divided 4 oz. pancetta cubed

Equipment

¼ cup white wine optional

1 large skillet with lid 12-inch is ideal

8 oz. mushrooms sliced

Instructions 1. Drain the tomatoes and hold onto the oil. Season the chicken with salt, pepper, and 1 teaspoon of dried oregano. 2. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chicken and cook, stirring often, until cooked through, about 5 to 8 minutes. Remove the chicken from the pan, place it on a plate, and set it aside. 3. Add the pancetta to the pan and cook, stirring often, until crispy, about 5 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the pancetta next to the chicken. 4. Add the wine to the skillet and use a wooden spatula to scrape up the bits in the skillet. (or use an extra splash of broth). Let simmer until nearly evaporated, about 1 to 2 minutes. 5. Add the mushrooms and sauté until softened and beginning to release their liquid, about 4 to 5 minutes. Season with a pinch of salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Add the garlic and sauté, stirring often, for another 30 seconds. 6. Stir in the broth and bring to a simmer. Add the pasta and stir. Lower the heat slightly and cover. Cook until the pasta is tender and al dente, usually about 10 minutes. Stir the pasta every few minutes.

¼ tsp. red pepper flakes 2 tsp. garlic minced 3 cups chicken broth 2 cups dried pasta ½ tsp. smoked paprika

7. Remove the lid and stir in the sun-dried tomatoes, 1 teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon black pepper, 1 teaspoon oregano, paprika (1 tsp), cooked chicken, and pancetta. Stir until combined. 8. Stir in the heavy cream and then the spinach. Stir until the spinach has wilted. 9. Remove from heat and stir in 3 tablespoon of grated Parmesan. Serve at once with extra Parmesan passed at the table.

Enjoy!

The Power of a Pint Your Gift Could Save Three Lives

J

anuary is National Blood Donor Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to spotlight one of the simplest — and most powerful — ways to give back. Donating blood may take less than an hour of your day, but it can save up to three lives. That’s a pretty big impact for something that starts with rolling up your sleeve. Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. From trauma patients and cancer fighters to premature babies and people undergoing surgery, donated blood is a critical, lifesaving resource. Unlike many medical supplies, blood can’t be manufactured — it can only come from generous donors. And because blood has a limited shelf life, the need is constant, not seasonal. January is an especially important time for donations. The holidays often disrupt donation schedules, winter weather can keep donors home, and seasonal illnesses may temporarily sideline otherwise regular 58 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE

There’s also something deeply rewarding about donating blood. It’s an act of quiet heroism — no spotlight, no long-term commitment, just a small moment of kindness with a ripple effect. You may never meet the person whose life you helped save, but your contribution becomes part of their story. If donating blood is on your “someday” list, let January be the month you make it happen. Whether you’re a first-timer or donors. The result? Blood banks frequently see shortages just when hospitals need a steady supply the most. Still, many people hesitate to donate because of common myths. Worried it will hurt? Most donors say the brief pinch less dramatic than expected. Think you don’t have time? The actual donation usually takes about 10 minutes. Concerned about safety? All equipment is sterile and used only once.

a regular donor, your willingness to give matters. This National Blood Donor Awareness Month, consider giving a pint — it’s a gift that truly flows from the heart. Contact Carter Blood Care at CarterBloodCare.org or 800-366-2834, or the American Red Cross at RedCrossBlood, to find a location or mobile blood drive near you. Carter Blood Care celebrates their 75th anniversary this year. LiveLocalMagazines.com
