Message from the Superintendent

W

elcome to our first issue of The Hive Report, and welcome to Edcouch-Elsa ISD. I can still feel the energy at our campuses since we welcomed all our students and families to the 2022-23 school year!

In Edcouch-Elsa ISD, the Board, Administration, Teachers, and staff are firmly committed to the success of our students and to doing the very best for them. Everywhere I visit in our district, I find passionate adults working tirelessly to ensure that our students continue to thrive in spite of the difficulties presented to us as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The past few years have tested our resolve, and we still have work to do to successfully connect every student with a caring adult who will provide the tools they need to reach their full potential. I am committed to supporting our district to assist our students in regaining lost learning opportunities and helping them move forward.

My grandmother raised me after raising her eight children. She believed that education provides endless opportunities. Because education transformed the lives of myself and my children, I understand the power education holds to change the trajectory of entire families and communities. That is why I approach each day in Edcouch-Elsa with a renewed sense of commitment to provide a solid educational foundation for our children.

The teaching and learning I have witnessed in our district are a joy. As the superintendent, I work to support and expand the number of brilliant classrooms in our district.

From our classrooms to the football field to the performance stage, our students continue to shine at Edcouch-Elsa ISD. In addition to the many opportunities to thrive academically at EEISD, afterschool programming through ACE provides our students with enrichment activities that you will not find anywhere nearby.

Again, welcome to Edcouch-Elsa ISD. I’m excited to be a part of Edcouch-Elsa ISD, and I will always work to guide our district and its children into the future.

Reflecting on 2 Years of a COVID World

ur district, along with the rest of the world, has endured so much due to COVID-19 in the past two years.

From the outbreak of COVID-19, to freezing temperatures, to unthinkable acts of violence against teachers and school children, the past two years are unimaginable. However, with the strength of our resilient community and the heart of a mighty Yellow Jacket, we were able to not only endure, but also to prosper.

Here are just a few highlights from the past two years:

OPERATIONS SUPPORT: In response to the world events, EEISD was able to establish community wide vaccines, provide meals to the community during both COVID-19 and winter storm Uri, and provide Standard Response Protocol training and Reunification training from the Texas School Safety Center to all school administrators.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY: A clear plan for the use of ESSER funds was developed to address student needs in COVID recovery. This plan has allowed EEISD to install new chillers, touchless water fountains, and air purification systems in school cafeterias, as well as purchasing PPE for all campuses and departments to provide a sanitary environment for our students and staff.

TECHNOLOGY: We have and continue to participate in connectivity upgrades, installation of security cameras, purchasing of employee and student laptops, and a move to paperless forms in many departments. The increase of technology on campuses allows us to better prepare our students for the world.

VIRTUAL LEARNING: When COVID-19 forced schools to close their doors, teachers pivoted quickly and were able to provide continued learning through a virtual platform to allow students to not only continue their education, but also remain connected to their classmates. In the following year, after welcoming students back, the school district was able to create a virtual learning academy for qualifying students.

GOALS 2022-2023 and beyond

his August, we welcomed all staff and students back to campus for the school year. Although COVID-19 remains present and safety precautions are still in place, the feelings of hope and excitement have returned to the hallways of our schools. Planning for the

district, moving forward, builds on our strengths and addresses our gap. We believe that, by prioritizing the following areas, we will be able to grow and succeed as a district.

ACADEMICS: In the Fall of 2020, EEISD adopted High Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) for middle school mathematics. This year, the implementation has expanded to include Reading Language Arts in grades K-12. The use of HQIM allows equal access to aligned, rigorous materials by all students.

RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION: Teachers and staff are our most valuable asset. It is a priority to not only retain the most effective teachers and staff, but to also recruit new talent. In the spring of 2022, Edcouch-Elsa ISD was chosen to participate in Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) which, after gathering baseline data, allows for teachers to receive financial rewards based on student growth in the classroom.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL (SEL) HEALTH: The past two years brought the need for social emotional health into focus. EEISD has taken this need seriously and responded by developing strategies for Tier 1 behavior support district wide, increased the number of social workers on staff, and selected SEL curriculum based on grade band. This goal will expand through continued training of counselors on different crisis situations as well as full implementation of the SEL curriculum.

SAFETY: EEISD takes safety seriously. It is important that our students, staff, and families not only feel safe, but are safe at all of our district sites. EEISD has put training, plans, and protocols in place to establish safe and secure environments. (More on page 15) EEISD remains committed to growing students and staff to ensure the highest quality education is provided in a safe learning environment. We look forward to our many successes.

A

ll Edcouch-Elsa ISD staff kicked off the 2022-2023 school year with excitement and energy at the all-district Convocation. After two full weeks of professional learning and classroom preparation, teachers and staff were ready to celebrate the start of the new year. Amassed

by our students, district staff were treated to musical performances by the awardwinning Mariachi Juvenil Azteca and a surprise performance by a local band, The Delta Boys. After Superintendent Dr. Greg Rodríguez celebrated the successes of the past year and goals for the upcoming school year, keynote speaker Rick Ramirez took the stage to tell his own story of hardship and perseverance. As the entire staff came together as a district, it allowed staff not only to show their campus pride but to share in an experience of shared hope and vision as a district. Welcome back, Jackets–we’re excited to see what this school year holds!

After an energetic convocation, we welcomed all families to a Back to School Bash in the afternoon. This was an excellent opportunity for families to meet campus staff and pick up school supplies they will need for the new year. ACE afterschool staff attended this event so families could register and learn more about the ACE program. The Child Nutrition department treated everyone to delicious hamburgers and hotdogs. The back-to-school bash proved successful with high attendance and a lot of positive energy heading into a new school year!

Teaching & Learning T

he EEISD teaching and learning team has restructured for the 2022-2023 school year. While team member titles and roles have shifted some, the focus remains on student achievement and teacher and student growth. Our Teaching and Learning team has shown positive results and will continue to

increase our district’s capacity to support every teacher and student in our district.

Capacity: This big C aligns with the Texas Education Agency’s Effective Schools Framework, Goal 1: Strong School Leadership and Planning. This year, district and campuslevel literacy coaches worked collaboratively to assist in the implementation of High Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) and research-based instructional practices. District-level coaches are funded through the Texas COVID Learning Acceleration Supports (TCLAS) grant the district was awarded last year. Campus literacy coaches are funded through annual federal Title I funds. To further build capacity, the Curriculum Leadership Academy brought together content and grade-level curriculum leaders this summer to learn about new instructional materials, engagement strategies, and tier-one behavior supports. By building capacity through professional learning, our curriculum leaders can readily assist their teams.

Curriculum: The 2nd “C” (curriculum) aligns with the Effective Schools Framework Goal 4: HQIM and Assessments. This focus led to a partial restructuring of the T&L department. Reading Language Arts and Bilingual Education were combined to create the Biliteracy Department. The merging of these two areas allows for a deeper understanding of language as an asset to building academic success. A highlight of our curriculum focus is the implementation of HQIM Math in 6-8 grade, HQIM Math intervention (K-8), HB4545 student acceleration, and HQIM RLA intervention (K-6). To connect curriculum with capacity, the T&L team will deliver professional learning for teachers and school leaders on HQIM.

Connections: Our final big “C” is connections. Connections align with the Effective Schools Framework Goal 3: Positive School Culture and Safety. The T&L team has worked to implement district-wide, aligned systems and protocols for Tier 1 behavior. These systems focus on connections, skill building, corrections, and acknowledgments. The Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum is currently in the implementation phase to help students learn about their emotional needs and build a toolbox of ways to respond to those needs.

After applying for, and being awarded, the highly-competitive federal Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) ACE grant just in time for the new school year, Edcouch-Elsa ISD launched an engaging and successful afterschool program where students were able to enrich their learning through collaborative and interactive projects in a variety of high-interest areas such as gaming, archery, robotics, greenpower car racing, drivers’ education, and Ballet Folklorico. The main purpose of this federally grant-funded, no-cost program is to provide expanded academic services which include homework assistance, tutorials, enrichment activities, college and career readiness and family engagement components to students before and after school as well as during the summer break.

Research shows positive student outcomes and high academic achievement in programs with regular, long-term student attendance.

Ensuring Safety

S

afety continues to be a top priority in Edcouch-Elsa ISD. After May 24, 2022 and the tragic event in Uvalde, Texas, safety procedures and protocols are at the forefront of everyone’s thoughts. While safety and security will always be a top priority for our district, the need for continued training and consistent practices is clearer than ever.

Last school year, all campus leaders and members of the district leadership team received

training on the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) from the Texas School Safety Center. This up to date training provides a uniform, planned, and prepared response to various crisis situations. Following up this year, at the summer leadership institute, all campus leaders received a refresh update on the SRP and engaged with tabletop crisis scenarios to practice our response to various situations. Beyond the initial and refresher training, EEISD is implementing the following steps to provide a safe and secure learning environment for all our staff and students:

Los entrenadores a nivel de distrito reciben fondos a través de la subvención Texas COVID Learning Acceleration Supports (TCLAS) que el distrito recibió el año pasado. Los entrenadores de alfabetización del campus son financiados a través de fondos federales anuales del Título I. Para desarrollar aún más la capacidad, la Academia de Liderazgo Curricular reunió este verano a líderes curriculares de contenido y nivel de grado para aprender sobre nuevos materiales de instrucción, estrategias de participación y apoyos conductuales de primer nivel. Al desarrollar la capacidad a través del aprendizaje profesional, nuestros líderes curriculares pueden ayudar fácilmente a sus equipos.

Currículo: La segunda “C” (currículo) se alinea con el Objetivo 4 del Marco de Escuelas Efectivas: HQIM y Evaluaciones. Este enfoque condujo a una reestructuración parcial en el departamento de T&L. Las artes del lenguaje de lectura y la educación bilingüe se combinaron para crear el Departamento de alfabetización bilingüe. La fusión de estas dos áreas permite una comprensión más profunda del idioma como un activo para construir el éxito académico. Lo más destacado de nuestro enfoque curricular es la implementación de HQIM Math en los grados 6-8, la intervención de HQIM Math (K-8), la aceleración estudiantil HB4545 y la intervención HQIM RLA (K-6). Para conectar el plan de estudios con la capacidad, el equipo de T&L brindará aprendizaje profesional para maestros y líderes escolares en HQIM. Conexiones: Nuestra gran “C” final es conexiones. El equipo de T&L ha trabajado para implementar sistemas y protocolos alineados en todo el distrito para el comportamiento de Nivel 1. A

Todo el personal de Edcouch-Elsa ISD inició el año escolar 2022-2023 con entusiasmo y energía en la Convocatoria de todo el distrito. Después de dos semanas completas de aprendizaje profesional y preparación en el aula, los maestros y el personal estaban listos para celebrar el comienzo del nuevo año. Presentado por nuestros estudiantes, el personal del distrito recibió presentaciones musicales del galardonado Mariachi Juvenil Azteca, así como una actuación sorpresa de la banda local, The Delta Boys. Después de que el superintendente Dr. Greg Rodríguez celebrara los éxitos del año pasado y las metas para el próximo año escolar, el orador principal Rick Ramírez subió al escenario para contar su propia historia de dificultades y perseverancia. A medida que todo el personal se unió como distrito, permitió que el personal no solo mostrara su propio orgullo por el campus, sino que también compartiera una experiencia de esperanza y visión compartidas como distrito. Después de una convocatoria enérgica, dimos la bienvenida a todas las familias a una fiesta de regreso a la escuela por la tarde. COMUNITARIO

C

omo parte del tema de este año, “Reconectarnos con el pasado para reimaginar nuestro futuro”, los líderes escolares y del distrito de Edcouch-Elsa se reunieron con los ex alumnos de EEISD, los Dres. Miguel Guajardo y Frank Guajardo para dar vida al tema 2022-2023, construir una comunidad y crear una visión para

nuestros alumnos.

Se nos recordó que las personas son el mayor activo de las comunidades.

Los hermanos Guajardo creen que las mejores teorías son teorías en la práctica.

El liderazgo del distrito y el Dr. Miguel Guahjardo diseñaron un fin de semana de reflexión y aprendizaje centrado en imaginar la visión de nuestro distrito escolar. Los participantes en el aprendizaje del fin de semana compartieron historias basadas en la práctica con el entendimiento de que el lugar y el espacio importan. Se nos recordó que las personas son el mayor activo de las comunidades. El proceso de aprendizaje, conocido en todo el mundo como Community Learning Exchange (CLE), permitió a los miembros de la comunidad escolar Edcouch-Elsa, muchos de los cuales son graduados y residentes de la comunidad Edcouch-Elsa, compartir su sabiduría y experiencias vividas y ayudar a pintar la imagen de dónde hemos estado y hacia dónde vamos.

El CLE se reunió en el Museo de Historia del Sur de Texas para alentar a los líderes no solo a reflexionar sobre su propio pasado, sino también a escuchar las experiencias de otras personas. METAS 2022-2023 y más allá!

ste año escolar dio la bienvenida a todo el personal y los estudiantes de regreso al campus en agosto. Aunque el COVID-19 permanece y aún se toman precauciones de seguridad, los sentimientos de esperanza y entusiasmo están presentes en los

pasillos de nuestras escuelas. La planificación para el distrito, el avance, se basa en nuestras fortalezas y aborda nuestra brecha. Creemos que, al priorizar las siguientes áreas, podremos crecer y tener éxito como distrito.

ACADÉMICO: en el otoño de 2020, EEISD adoptó materiales didácticos de alta calidad (HQIM) para las matemáticas de la escuela intermedia. Este año, la implementación se ha ampliado para incluir Lectura y Artes del Lenguaje en los grados K-12. El uso de HQIM permite el acceso equitativo a materiales alineados y rigurosos por parte de todos los estudiantes.

RECLUTAMIENTO Y RETENCIÓN: Los maestros y el personal son nuestro activo más valioso. Es una prioridad no solo retener a los maestros y al personal más efectivos, sino también reclutar nuevos talentos. En la primavera de 2022, Edcouch-Elsa ISD fue elegido para participar en la asignación de incentivos para maestros (TIA) que, después de recopilar datos de referencia, permite que los maestros reciban recompensas financieras según el crecimiento de los estudiantes en el salón de clases.

SALUD SOCIOEMOCIONAL (SEL): Los últimos dos años pusieron de relieve la necesidad de la salud socioemocional. EEISD ha tomado en serio esta necesidad y ha respondido desarrollando estrategias para el apoyo conductual de Nivel 1 en todo el distrito, aumentó la cantidad de trabajadores sociales en el personal y seleccionó el plan de estudios SEL según la banda de grados. Esta meta se expandirá a través de la capacitación continua de consejeros en diferentes situaciones de crisis, así como la implementación completa del plan de estudios SEL. SEGURIDAD: EEISD se toma muy en serio la seguridad. Es importante que nuestros estudiantes, el personal y las familias no solo se sientan seguros, sino que estén seguros en todos los sitios de nuestro distrito. EEISD ha implementado capacitación, planes y protocolos para establecer entornos seguros y protegidos. uestro distrito, junto con el resto del mundo, ha sufrido mucho debido al COVID-19 en los últimos dos años. Desde el brote de COVID-19 hasta las temperaturas bajo cero y los actos de violencia impensables contra maestros y niños en edad escolar, los últimos dos años son inimaginables. Sin embargo, con la fuerza de nuestra resistente comunidad y el corazón de un poderoso Yellow Jacket, pudimos no solo resistir, sino

también prosperar. Estos son solo algunos aspectos destacados de los últimos dos años:

APOYO A LAS OPERACIONES: En respuesta a los eventos mundiales, nuestro distrito pudo establecer vacunas en toda la comunidad, proporcionar comidas a la comunidad durante el COVID-19 y la tormenta de invierno Uri, y brindar capacitación sobre el Protocolo de respuesta estándar y capacitación sobre reunificación del Centro de seguridad escolar de Texas para todos los administradores escolares

RESPONSABILIDAD FISCAL: Se desarrolló un plan claro para el uso de los fondos de ESSER para abordar las necesidades de los estudiantes en la recuperación de COVID. Este plan ha permitido instalar nuevos enfriadores, fuentes de agua sin contacto y sistemas de purificación de aire en las cafeterías escolares, así como comprar PPE para todos los campus y departamentos para brindar un entorno sanitario para nuestros estudiantes y personal.

TECNOLOGÍA: Hemos participado en muchas actualizaciones de conectividad, instalación de cámaras de seguridad, compra de computadoras portátiles para empleados y estudiantes, y un cambio a formularios sin papel en muchos departamentos. El aumento de la tecnología en los campus nos permite preparar mejor a nuestros estudiantes para el mundo global.

APRENDIZAJE VIRTUAL: Cuando el COVID-19 obligó a las escuelas a cerrar sus puertas, los maestros giraron rápidamente y pudieron brindar un aprendizaje continuo a través de una plataforma virtual para permitir que los estudiantes no solo continuaran con su educación, sino que también permanecieran conectados con sus compañeros de clase. escolar 2022-23!

En Edcouch-Elsa ISD, la junta, la administración, los maestros y el personal están firmemente comprometidos con el éxito de nuestros estudiantes y con hacer lo mejor para ellos. Mi abuela me crió después de criar a sus ocho hijos. Ella creía que la educación brindaba infinitas oportunidades. Debido a que la educación transformó mi vida y la vida de mis hijos, entiendo el poder de la educación para cambiar la trayectoria de familias y comunidades enteras. Es por eso que me acerco a cada día en Edcouch-Elsa con un sentido renovado de compromiso para proporcionar una base educativa sólida para nuestros niños.

La enseñanza y el aprendizaje que he presenciado en nuestro distrito es un placer para la vista. Como superintendente, trabajo para apoyar y ampliar la cantidad de salones de clases brillantes en nuestro distrito.
