Facing a life-threatening illness proved the catalyst for Jeff Brand’s real estate success.

After spending his early career managing and owning restaurants throughout the DallasFort Worth Metroplex, the San Antonio-born, Dallas-bred Brand grew tired of the manual labor and long days with little financial gain. That all changed dramatically in February 1995.

A Thriving Business

Jon and Justine Morales were living the traditional American family life in Flower Mound: Justine a stay at home mom with two kids, and Jon a hard-working dad who traveled often for work. They even had a mini van parked in the driveway.

But then came the fateful day when Jon told Justine he was tired of working in Corporate America and wanted to find a new angle for their lives that would give them more flexibility and happiness. He left the house with Justine’s minivan — their only car at the time — and traded it in for a Black SUV. His idea: start a luxury transportation company for local residents and business professionals who need a reliable option for everything from trips to the airport to entertaining clients or having a fun night out on the town.

And Tempus Transportation LLC was born.

“We started this business not really knowing what we were doing,” Justine said with a laugh.

“I remember Jon took my car and came back with this SUV and said, ‘This is it. This is what we’re going to do.’ Now we have five vehicles and a thriving business. It’s been a great move for us.”

Jon, who also goes by Juan, and Justine never say “no” to customers. Their business picks up where companies like Uber and Lyft leave off by providing great service at affordable prices.

“I used to be the guy sitting in the back of the car, and I got to know my driver extremely well,” said Jon, a Marine veteran. “I remember telling him, ‘Man, I’m going to get out of the rat race and become a driver like you.’ I never really looked back.”

Justine and Jon are the full-time drivers, though they have 10 part-time drivers and are looking to hire several full-time drivers. Having the best staff is an important piece in that repeat customers get to know their driver on a more intimate level

Dennis Jenkins’ earliest memories include putting fliers on homes to advertise his dad’s pest control business. While growing up in the business might have given him an edge over someone just starting out, don’t think for one minute that his father just passed down his business to him.

“My father had three sons and each went to a different city in Texas to start a similar business,” said Dennis. “We all used the ABC name but had separate ownership.”

In fact, when Dennis came to the DFW area in 1989, he began ABC Home and Commercial Services of DFW in his garage. Since that time they have grown the customer base to over 27,000 active clients all over North Texas and expanded their service offerings to include not only all things pest control, but lawn fertilization and lawn mowing as well.

ABC has always been on the cutting edge of treatment solutions. With a degree in entomology from A&M, Dennis prides himself and his company on finding the right solutions to pest problems without overcharging clients.

In fact, they were instrumental in moving clients with termites from a full treatment to a much more cost-effective spot-treat technology.

ABC’s greatest strength, however, lies in its people. Dennis makes it a point to look for people who are likeable, hard-working and trustworthy.

David Ryan, his friends and clients call him Ryan, learned a long time ago that the best way to build trusting relationships with his clients was to put their needs above his own. That seems simple enough, but finding a team which shares that same vision is not always easy. In many cases, it can take a business owner years to find that right mix of passion and selflessness.

Clearly, Ryan has been blessed. Since opening David Ryan Salon in 2013, teamwork has been his salon’s greatest strength. And in an age where most salons can’t say the same thing, his customers are reaping the benefits. Sure, David Ryan’s name is on the marquee and he is still one of the more sought after stylists in Denton County, but it’s each team member’s individual artistic talent and a family atmosphere that, when placed together, creates an explosion of creativity.

Secondly, we are really good at being creative.

Most times people don’t know exactly what they want without some guidance. We excel at this. We take time with each client to get to know them, their personality, what they do, how they want to look, and what will make them feel truly beautiful.”

When he was 17, Ryan was planning on going into the military when a friend asked him for a ride to cosmetology school. While his friend was in another room, Ryan ended up getting into a conversation with another student.

That was 16 years ago. He went on to work at a few different well-known salons and was blessed to learn a lot of the business through them. He took everything he learned from the industry during that time and began mapping out the perfect salon in his head — a salon that not only served its customers, but also served God. “I am passionate about my amazing wife and about God’s love for me through Jesus Christ, and I try to help anyone I can,” Ryan said. “The hair industry can be a tough place to keep yourself grounded into reality, and God has done amazing work in my life to be able to see that what I do every day is a gift and has purpose for something greater than myself.”

Shweta Kolatkar grew up facing the same skin issues as every other teenager – acne, skin sensitivities, hyper pigmentation, etc. We’re sure many of you have been there, too. It’s not fun.

But rather than sit back and remain insecure, Shweta took charge and began learning all she could about organic ways to care for her skin.

Seven years ago a client sheepishly approached Jesse James Leyva, owner of Jesse James Fit in Flower Mound, to ask a favor. Inside JJF there is a large wall, growing each year full of client photos who have competed in various bodybuilding and fitness shows.

The pictures were for everyone to see – like a wall of fame – and the men and women in them were sculpted from head to toe. Everyone loved the display. This particular client wanted to be a part of it.

“I remember the client saying ‘I don’t want to do a show, but it’s a goal of mine to get on that wall!’”

“You don’t have to be a competitor to get on the wall and I thought it was an awesome idea,” replied Leyva.

So the next year Leyva helped his client work towards the goal of joining the rest of the fit bodies and display of accomplishments featured on the wall.

Over the years, getting on “the wall” has become a bit of a goal setting for clients at Jesse James Fit that Leyva and his personal trainers work hard to make a reality for others.

“We train a variety of clients from husbands and wives, even a mom and her two sons,” Leyva said with a smile. “These are regular people who made big changes. I get goosebumps every time I think about it.”

Leyva’s passion for health and fitness began with him taking a heavy interest in bodybuilding even earning the title Mr. Texas in 2010. He has also been candid about the fact he grew up the son of a single mom in a poor family from Los Angeles.

He eventually moved to Texas to open his first gym Nu Body Gym & Tan then Texas Sports Club.

Leyva had always instilled passion, discipline, hard work and dedication into each of his clients.

Working with people towards meeting their goals and self-betterment with amazing retention as a personal trainer, he used his strengths and passion to create Jesse James Fit in 2007. At the heart of his new venture was individualized training with a focus on family fitness. Unlike big box gyms, everyone at Jesse James Fit is paired with a trainer. Those trainers share the same core values that Leyva has, and they are in it for the long haul. Some trainers even left corporate America to pursue their passion and make a career in fitness.

“I never thought I’d have this many cool stories come out of one place in Flower Mound,” Leyva said. “Looking at the wall of photos sometimes others see someone up there and think, ‘Oh, that guy’s just lucky.’ They don’t know the story behind the guy in the photo or his journey to accomplish the 35 pounds weight loss and the fit physique displayed. Or the lady who lost 60 pounds, got off medications, and gave it her all for weeks and weeks, sweat, and tears to overcome her obstacles. These people weren’t perfect or lucky; they worked hard and persevered through the tough workouts. We’re happy to be able to offer the atmosphere to help them accomplish their goals.”

If you are a beer connoisseur you love to change it up. It used to be you had to go into downtown Dallas to find a great selection of unique beers but Brad Trapnell, a resident of Highland Village, decided to change all of that.

After 15 years in mortgage loan servicing, Brad left the corporate world to open What’s On Tap, a “Beer Café” as he calls it, featuring 36 taps of craft beers from all over the world, rotating continually.

“We are changing out beers all the time,” said Brad. “We have seasonal and limited release beers so choosing can be hard, but it’s a fun kind of hard.”

What’s on Tap has been voted Best craft beer selection for the Best of Denton County for two years running. The beer menu is placed on electronic boards at the front of the bar. That way, if a tap runs out, it can be changed at a moment’s notice. They also serve a huge variety of beers, wines, ciders and even root beer. Sure, you can get pint, but you can also take your beer home in a 32 oz. or 64 oz. growler.

“It’s not unusual on a Friday or Saturday to have 8-10 taps change hands,” said Brad.
