For Rebecca Romanucci, when attempting to age gracefully, the conservative approach to skin rejuvenation is best.

Rebecca started RSR Medical Skin Rejuvenation, LLC, seven years ago with the belief that the key to healthy skin is to not only protect it from the day you are born, but also to adapt your skin care regimen to meet the needs as we age. She believes that a conservative approach to skin care rejuvenation not only is the safest way to treat people, but also what people want.

When asked why RSR Medical continues to win Best of Denton County honors, Rebecca responded, “We believe in aging.......gracefully; slowing down the negative effects of the aging process. I believe the reason we continue to receive such high praise is because we are conservative, and at RSR Medical, we are all medically trained.

“Not all ‘medi-spas’ have registered nurses or a physician who are actually assessing and treating the patient. Consultations are complementary and we thoroughly assess each patient as we carefully listen to each of their concerns. It is not a one-size-fits-all mentality. Our clients trust us, and as a result, our business continues to grow.”

If you weren’t born with voluminous lips, or well-defined cheek bones, you may want to ask yourself what the outcome would be if you added too much volume, more than they were designed to hold.”

Rebecca is OK with missing out on potential business if it means she is protecting someone from making a potentially life-altering mistake.

It is important to Romanucci that her staff focus only on the things that enhance the areas that concern the client the most.

“Replacing the volume that they have lost over time, or slowing down the movement of the muscles which cause scowl or frown lines, rather than altering their appearance,” she said, is their goal.

“We have all seen the results of those who have gone to places who WILL over-inject their lips (duck lips), or cheeks, resulting in a distorted appearance, or who have been treated with Botox/Dysport to ‘freeze’ their face, resulting in the inability to make any expressions. At RSR, we feel that weakening specific facial muscles, and avoiding others, provides both a reduction of unwanted lines and wrinkles, as well as the ability to continue to make beautiful expressions, resulting in a much more natural look.”

Who is injecting you? Advanced Trained Registered Nurses: Key Difference to Consider Perhaps the most important consideration for any aesthetic injectable treatment is the expertise of the person doing the injection. All procedures and services at RSR are performed by registered nurses licensed by the Texas Board of Nursing.

They all have completed advanced training and certifications under the supervision and guidance of their medical director, a surgeon who is actively practicing and certified by the American Board of Surgery.

A Champion for the Community Rebecca and her staff are extremely genuine people who are easy to like. They live for God, caring for other people and doing what’s right for the community.

As successful as RSR Medical has been for her family, the true success for Rebecca is being fortunate to use her business to be more involved in the community. This year alone, RSR Medical was invited to participate as the host for the Lantana Ladies League, where Rebecca helped raise more than $1,000 for Meals on Wheels. Rebecca is passionate about the welfare of children and also will be donating the paid December cover of Lantana Living Magazine to Children’s Advocacy Center to help raise awareness and protection for the community’s children and family members.

When not at work, she spends a good amount of her time at her children’s school by volunteering.

She has been her daughter’s volleyball coach for the past two years, which she refers to as ‘being a volunteer, Google coach,’ trying to increase the girls’ understanding and love for the game, and to build their self-esteem.

“We all have a responsibility to act, where we are able, to make a positive impact,” she said. “The growth of RSR Medical has provided me with the opportunity and pleasure to give back and try to make a difference.

“Going to work doesn’t feel like work when you truly love what you do and you get to do it with your best friends every day” Ten years ago, Shauna McCabe and Kendra Schmidt came up with the dream of Salon Sage. As friends for over ten years, they decided to finally make their dream a reality so they could accomplish their goal of making women feel more beautiful and special.

Now, their salon is award winning and is accomplishing this goal on a daily basis. Women from all over the area come to the salon on a frequent basis for a variety of services. They walk away looking and feeling gorgeous both inside and out.

Salon Sage has won the Best Of Denton County award for three years in a row now. Shauna and Kendra remain committed to helping others by way of their salon services. They continue to remain educated on the latest beauty techniques and trends; providing clients with new options all the time. Shauna is flattered by the success of Salon Sage as well as winning the Best Of Denton County award for the third time. “Last year was amazing and to be able to do it again is so exciting” says Shauna.

NO LIMITS Growing up, Coach Mike Winburn never thought he would end up teaching children for a living.

As a child, he excelled in competitive gymnastics along with his four sisters. Even though he grew up with his parents operating a gymnastics and dance center, he was determined to make his way to a fancy business career in Finance and consulting. He coached children’s gymnastics throughout High School and College, but he eventually earned that Finance degree and was off to pursue his business goals.

It did not take very long for Mike to realize that wearing business suits and working all day in kid-less environments was not his true calling. By 1998 he resigned from a wellpaid consulting career to pursue his dream to create the ultimate children’s sports and activity center; one that would be amazing for children of all ages and abilities.

The husband-wife duo look to their pasts to build a successful franchise future. Hollie and Lee Woodham, a couple who met on a Southwest Airlines flight not once, but twice, took their marriage to the next level by opening their own franchise together.

With over 30 years of combined experience in the business world, the Woodham’s are looking to their pasts in order to build a successful future as Mosquito Joe owners and operators in the Northwest Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Born and raised in the Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX., area, Lee has always been a business-minded individual, even running several small businesses during his college years.

Owning and managing a sports memorabilia shop in a couple of local malls, Lee financed his entire college tuition to Texas A&M University, where he earned his BBA in Finance in 1994. Lee worked at the City of Hurst early in his career before moving into management consulting. He currently works at a national healthcare Fortune20 company in an executive level position.

While their two children, Jackson and Ella, took up plenty of their time, Hollie and Lee felt that they needed a new challenge. After combing through several franchise possibilities, the couple finally found a business that combined their ambition with their love for the outdoors— their journey with Mosquito Joe had begun.

“We loved what they were doing, so we flew out to the headquarters and talked with Kevin Wilson about the background of the company

Being in Texas, where mosquitoes run amok and West Nile Virus is a very real fear, the Woodham’s saw their own Mosquito Joe business as a means to give back to their community in more ways than one.

“The families are so grateful to be able to use their backyards and be outside again,” Hollie said. “I also love that entrepreneurs in the area want to help each other grow and be successful.”

Even with growing pains typically encountered during an inaugural franchise unit, the Woodham’s could not be more thrilled with their business venture.

“I think that the concept overall has proven to be effective,” Hollie said.“We’ve certainly seen some tremendous growth this season. We contribute that to the marketing and branding, as well as family and friends in the area promoting by word-of-mouth.”

With four territories under their guiding hands, Lee and Hollie are ready to make 2015 a landmark year for Mosquito Joe. They’re shooting to open a second—and perhaps third—unit next season.

Grassperson Maintains

Strong Local Ties

Brian Gasperson still has the first client contract he ever signed hanging in his office.

The agreement was for Gasperson -- who was 12 at the time -- to mow the lawns of 10 foreclosed homes owned by the old Southern Savings & Loan Bank in Lewisville. His mom drew up the document, and it turned out to be a good deal for a local kid who originally wanted to make enough money to buy a new bicycle.

“The bank signed it, I signed it and I got that bicycle,” he said. “It was such good money that me and a buddy would walk the street, hand out hand-drawn fliers, pull a wagon and do yards. That was our thing.”

It’s safe to say Grassperson Lawn Care & Landscape was born on the principle of homegrown service done the right way, one lawn at a time. Gasperson’s business -- which he formally started with his brother, Wade, 14 years ago -- has become the lawn maintenance company of choice in Denton County. He has 45 employees and 15 trucks to help service his client base, which has grown every year.

It goes beyond that, though. Having worked in corporate America for many years as a partner for Outback Steakhouse, Gasperson learned that customers want someone who will listen to them and put their needs above everything else.

“When I first started doing this, people were asking me to do everything,” Gasperson said.

“So I figured out what was the most important thing for my customers and we got licensed to do it. I have guys who only trim shrubs or only handle chemical application. And they’ve all been here for a long time, so we know our customers. My concern, at the end of the day, is that we are results driven in the field. We take care of our customers.”

Brian feels growing up in the area not only gives him a unique view of the community, but also adds a level of trust he feels no other company can match.

“I was born and raised here and my family has been here since the 1940s,” he said. “I started this from nothing and I remember it taking me two hours to mow a house by myself.

Like so many other twins, Patrick and Paul Wright shared many fond memories growing up.

The brothers both attended Dallas Jesuit Preparatory School, earned their undergraduate degrees at the University of North Texas (political science for Patrick, accounting for Paul) and their Juris Doctorates at the South Texas School of Law where Paul served as assistant editor of the South Texas Law Review. In between, Paul picked up a Master’s in Tax Law, a field in which he’s a published author.

The Wrights went separate ways when starting their careers with Patrick serving as city attorney for Krum and Hackberry, and as city prosecutor in Corinth. Paul worked as a certified public accountant.

They also started families, separately, of course.

Patrick and wife Sherri have two daughters Hayley and Hannah while Paul and wife Rachel have three children – Jack, Sam, and Emma.

But after several years working for other people, the Wright brothers decided to reunite professionally. That was in 2002-2003 and ever since, The Wright Firm, LLP has been helping people in Denton County and beyond with their legal needs.

Their clients obviously like what the brothers and their firm have done since they were voted the Best Law Firm and Best Civil Law Firm in the 2015 Best of Denton County contest.

“Working with my brother is a highly-rewarding experience,” said Patrick, who joined the firm as partner in 2003.

“My own experiences working in other areas of law, as well as different styles of practice, are what ultimately led me here. Yes, I am a lawyer; but I am also an entrepreneur, as is my brother.

We both love to lead and encourage people to grow professionally, which is really what keeps us going. We are invested in our people (employees), and they are invested and engaged in the work we do at the firm.”

The Wright Firm works with families, companies/ corporations, and individuals in solving their legal issues. While most recognized in family law, it also adeptly handles estate planning, probate, bankruptcy, and criminal defense cases.

There are 11 attorneys on staff led by Patrick, who is Board Certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, and Paul, who specializes in probate, estate planning and tax law. Paul manages the principal office in Dallas with Patrick doing the same in Lewisville.

The firm also has an office in Frisco with all three focused squarely on client needs.

"Our work excites us because we better people's daily lives,” Patrick said. “Our work is common, but the manner in which we work is not.

“We are also passionate about constantly improving our business, our employees and ourselves. We encourage growth at every stage, and we are constantly looking for opportunities to be better than we were the day before.”

One of the keys to The Wright Firm’s success is listening, then taking appropriate action. The brothers and their firm find a real sense of pride in communicating with their clients effectively. The firm is results driven, but also remembers that clients need attorneys and staff who understand that these cases are still about people.

“Our firm is great at solving an array of problems for our clients,” Patrick said. “However, given that our industry, and specifically our specialty, is emotionally difficult, we like to say that we are best at making it better. While classically trained in the law, the Wrights try to incorporate the latest technology into their practice.

“I really enjoy technology and finding ways to integrate technology to ease our clients' experiences,” Patrick said. “Paul and I love to look at innovative ways to incorporate our daily firm tasks and client interactions into seamless

processes that often utilize new technology, new applications, and most importantly, new ways to connect with our clients.”

Though they continue enjoying success professionally, it is the personal side that makes the brothers most proud. Patrick enjoys watching his two daughters play volleyball for their school and club teams.

“While I am proud of my firm and everything that has been accomplished on that front, when I look at my daughters, I feel an overwhelming sense of pride,” he said. “My wife is an amazing partner, and she is understanding of the fact that I work late many nights. She sees that I work tirelessly for my clients, and she sets out to be a part of that as well.”

“My children are in multiple sports and I too have a very supportive wife,” Paul added.

Both brothers put their roles as husbands and fathers at the top of their priorities. They seek to be leaders, not only at work, but also at home.

They try to spend as much time as possible with their families even while being incredibly dedicated to their clients.

The firm also is big on helping others including supporting the St. Thomas Carnival where Paul can be found calling bingo games.

One of the earliest memories Brett Nelson has of lawyers was listening to his father describe the distaste he had for them, and how his particular attorney relied on a stopwatch to handle the billing in his case.

Nelson recalls his dad telling him that his lawyer recorded every second spent on their conversation, clicking and un-clicking multiple stopwatches ad nauseam. If his assistant came in, he’d click on a stopwatch to start that timer.

It was the same with a different stopwatch when the phone rang.

Every ... second ... accounted for.

“Whether this is a true story or a figment of my imagination, I don’t know. But I recall my father talking very negatively about the experience he had with his lawyer,” Nelson said. “The specifics aren’t important, I just remember the significance of it as I was determined to utilize our family values in whatever career choice I made.”

Years later, when Brett graduated from Drake University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, he told his proud and wise father that he wanted to be a lawyer. The elder Nelson was not too excited about the prospect of his youngest son becoming a lawyer, and his next words to his son were poignant, “Lawyers divide wealth, they create none.”

“My dad’s comments stuck with me for a long time,” Brett said. “I decided to do things 68 | Legal Services | Best of Denton County 2015

differently, I would create value for my clients, and create positives out of what are otherwise difficult situations.”

It is with that backdrop that Nelson started his own practice, Nelson Law Group PC, and eventually moved from Iowa to Flower Mound.

Nelson Law Group provides legal services in the areas of family law, civil litigation, estate planning, and business legal needs.

Nelson practiced law and operated his own firm in Iowa and Illinois for 16 years.

While there, he gained a reputation as a tireless defender of families – especially kids. Nelson also led Highland Village-based Christman, Kelley, & Clarke’s family law practice before starting his own local practice.

“My approach is that this is a servant relationship,” Nelson said. “My obligation to clients I work with is to provide value to them in whatever circumstance they are facing. I have found that lawyers often look past the economics of a case and look at just the legalities. Can you win? I focus on the solutions the client needs and what the opportunity costs (time and money) are in pursuing a particular legal strategy.”

But for Nelson, working hard for his clients – and gaining a popular following along the way – goes much deeper than that, and certainly doesn’t involve a stopwatch.

Nelson’s philosophy, he explained, is about treating his clients as people. And in many instances, he would rather talk a potential client out of working with him – and save a marriage – than make an extra buck.

Nelson added, “I do this because I’m passionate about helping people. I want to provide value.”

After he graduated from Drake Law School, Nelson was hired by the 7th Judicial District Court in Davenport, Iowa. It was there he gleaned first-hand experience in the courtroom – seeing the good, the bad and the ugly. He also was able to discuss what he had witnessed in the courtroom with the presiding judge, which allowed him to peer behind the curtain in terms of how judges do things, what they view as effective advocacy, and what they see as credible or not.

“It was invaluable insight,” Nelson said. “Looking back, all of it enabled me to understand the perceptions we all hold. Sometimes we come into events in our lives with preconceived facebook.com/BestofDentonCounty

notions of who people are. Through that, I became interested in providing value through the practice of law.”

Success came fast, but Nelson admits he still had some valuable lessons to learn as the years went on. There were times in the past, Brett said, where he would get up at 3:30 a.m. and stay at work all day – oftentimes not coming home until after 8 p.m. That, he said, put a ton of pressure and strain on his family.

So he set out to learn how to juggle a successful practice with a more important family life.

Sure, Nelson Law Group is a big part of his life.

But work life isn’t what makes this man tick, and he’s quite intentional about it. It’s obvious when he starts talking adoringly about his family.

Nelson and wife, Karma, have been married for 15 years and have three beautiful children (Lucy 13, Pierce 11, and Peyton 8). Karma owns her own health and fitness coaching business, and as Brett puts it, she is the most attentive mother and caring wife he could ever hope to have.

Add in their dog JoJo, and the Nelsons are your All-American family.

None of that happened without plenty of soul searching, old-fashioned hard work, and commitment.

Family always has been No. 1 on the list for the Nelsons. Not only did Brett see what it was like to live a life without stability, but so did Karma, whose father passed away when she was 5 years old. Both had to carry with them the stinging pain of being caught in the middle while trying to move forward.

Karma and Brett juggle careers with obligations at Rockpointe Church, various sports commitments for their two boys, cheerleading for Lucy, and the typical trials and tribulations that go along with any marriage. That’s quite a load, and it’s not hard to see why their calendar fills up so quickly. But they are committed to one another, and insist on beginning and ending each day with family time.

Maybe it’s because he’s a fourth-generation lawyer who received his Juris Doctorate from the same school – Washburn University in Topeka, Kan. – as his stepfather, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather. Perhaps it is his Denton-based, family-led Bowen Law Group with his partner Chrysandra Bowen whose undergraduate degree also was from Washburn While criminal law is one of the firm’s focuses, family law is the other and Brent Bowen believes expanding that area is why his firm won for Best Juvenile Law Firm in the 2015 Best of Denton County voting. When he was younger, Dr. Brett was one of those little kids who loved working with his hands and being creative. He said it was easy to fall in love with topics like science, and for as long as he can remember, he wanted to be just like his dad — who he still believes is the perfect mentor.

For the Titensor’s, it’s all in a day’s work. On any given day, Dr. Steven Titensor can be found out in the lobby giving a longtime client a hug or personally welcoming a new patient before they step in the exam room. He doesn’t think anything of it, because it’s simply part of his routine.

“I remember growing up and seeing him come home tired from a long day,” Dr. Brett said. “Dentistry can be difficult, and for him to accomplish so much in his career has always impressed me. Especially now that I have done a lot of those same things, it makes me appreciate even more what he has done. There isn’t a dentist I’ve ever spoken to that knows more than him. He’s probably the best dentist around.”

Dr. Brett, though still new to the office, has become beloved in such a short period of time and many longtime clients have no problem seeing him as an extension of his father.

“The technology has been so easy for him to pick up,” Dr. Steven Titensor said. “Because he excelled so quickly at it, he was hired by the Cerec team to train other dentists. He is probably one of the youngest dentists ever to do that, and I couldn’t be more proud.”

“We hardly take impressions for crowns anymore, everything is done with a digital camera,” Dr. Steven Titensor said. “No more temporary crowns, no more coming back for that second or third appointment.

“We also have a CT Digital X-ray machine in the office. Everything can be quicker and more precise with this technology. Most general dentists don’t do implants, they refer it out,” Dr. Steven Titensor said.

The program — which runs for four months from March-July — also helps fund dental humanitarian trips to places like the Dominican Republic, Nepal, Guatemala, Mexico and China.

Both dentists have spent time providing school supplies, dental work, equipment and time to various villages, schools and orphanages in these struggling parts of the world. They have also been able to use their language skills in these areas — Dr. Steven Titensor being fluent in Spanish while Dr. Brett Titensor is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.

It’s a lot of work, but that’s what a family does. And the Titensor’s wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Growing up with my dad, I’ve seen a lot and it’s all been a blessing. Succeeding at Caring Joint Vision Continues When doctors Joseph S. Valenti, Caren Reaves, Monica Popov, and Laura Finger combined their common philosophies of patient care and business administration to launch Caring for Women in 2001, little did they know how successful they’d be 14 years later.

Fat Cow BBQ was founded in 2009 by Henry Wall and Allen Lockett. Henry and Allen were best friends and business partners at that time.

Allen had a “knack” for amazing BBQ and Henry is a visionary that saw an incredible opportunity. Even though neither of them had ever worked in the restaurant business, they decided to take action on Henry’s idea even though most family members and friends thought they had lost their minds.

They started offering catering services (business to business) and in a short amount of time they were getting more caterings than they could keep up with out of their homes. Their wives Kathy Wall and Pamela Lockett were really getting fed up with their homes constantly smelling like BBQ smoke and gave them an ultimatum and deadline to stop running their growing business out of their residences.

On October 30th, 2010 the first brick and mortar Fat Cow BBQ restaurant (only 950 sf) was opened in Lewisville, Texas that was mainly for caterings and take out business with

only enough seating for 10 people. Due to the overwhelming love for their food, they took over another suite and remodeled in 2011 to accommodate over 100 dine-in customers and then the real growth began.

In December 2014 Fat Cow BBQ opened their 2nd location at 3040/MacArthur Blvd and has plans to open new locations in Ft. Worth, Watugua, Grand Prairie and Mesquite, Texas in the near future. Fat Cow BBQ is also diving into the exciting Food Truck industry and has plans to launch their first truck in November 2015.

Fat Cow BBQ is one of the highest rated restaurants overall on Yelp, Trip Advisor, Google Places, and Urbanspoon in North Texas. They’ve won Best of Denton County in 2013, 2014 and now in both categories in 2015. Their love for their food and customers is evident as soon as you walk into one of their restaurants. Henry and Allen’s personalities are bigger than life and anyone who knows them understands that statement. Although they’re very different in many ways their mindset is very similar. Want to know how two highly skilled Texas scientist buddies developed a winning formula? (Ok, we admit “scientists” is a loose term to describe these two!)

One of the scientists is an award winning Texas singer-songwriter, Jon Christopher Davis, who is not only an incredible musician, but also an avid lover of the history of Texas music. He penned and recorded the song “Lone Star Attitude”.

The other one, John “Sparky” Pearson, a Congress Junior High survivor, Denton High School Bronco, Baylor University undergraduate and the University of North Texas MBA graduate, knew they needed a place of community and love to conduct their experiment and test their hypothesis: “People will increase their love for Texas music history if they can learn about it while eating great food, drinking cold beer, laughing with family and friends, sitting in a super cool space, viewing the square from the rooftop, and listening to Texas artists perform live”.

The search was on for the perfect laboratory and testing area to conduct their experiment and prove their hypothesis. That’s when they landed directly across from one of the greatest assets in Denton County, the iconic and historic courthouse in downtown Denton.

Next step was to break out a big ol’ bowl of Texas Entrepreneurship that read “What the hell, we’re going to die anyway!” and began adding the highly explosive ingredients to begin the testing.

They took the first items from the “Great Texas Music Elements Chart” which included “Wn”Willie Nelson, “Tb”- T-Bone Walker, S-Selena, “Gj”- George Jones, “JJ”- Janis Joplin, “Ro”Roy Orbison, “WJ”-Waylon Jennings, “BW”-Bob Wills, “RAG”-Scott Joplin, “FF”-Freddy Fender and last, but certainly not least “BH”- Buddy Holly and began to build the formula. www.BestofDentonCounty.com

Then they added a little faith in the mix, and out of the smoke rose a 6X24 oil painting worthy of any museum called the “The Great Texas Supper”!

Next, they collected old and neglected musical instruments and formed them into the shape of Texas. This jewel is hanging right behind the downstairs bar for all to see.

They adorned posters and pictures throughout the downstairs showing the diverse musical catalogue of artists from this great state.

To make sure that there is no downtime from the opportunity to learn, they added in the restrooms something they call the “bathroom classroom” which tells unique stories about the beginnings of many of Texas’ famous musical artists.

After that, they built a back stairway that has a giant star window and if you pause at the second landing you look up and you realize you are standing in the Texas flag!

Finally, they built the most amazing rooftop experience in North Texas complete with a beer bottle chandelier, album covered bar top, open-air roll up doors, and a magical view that extends for miles.

They elevated the stage over the piano key painted staircase so the backdrop to any artist playing is the beautiful courthouse directly behind them.

They needed something more that would entice the guests to smile at every bite, so they whipped up the best and most addictive parmesan cheese fries known to mankind.

They didn’t stop there, they created home-made cobblers and even had their own Honey-Whiskey Ice Cream developed to top them.

It had finally come time to start and complete the experiment, so they opened. People flocked in, and they were amazed. Everything that they had hoped for and more occurred, and the results were extremely clear as they finalized their conclusion: People DO increase their love for Texas music history when they can learn about it while eating great food, drinking cold beer, laughing with family and friends, sitting in a super cool space, viewing the square from the rooftop, and listening to Texas artists perform live”.

The hypothesis has proven true!

When that was done, they sat down with their chef to create the best from scratch food you’ll find at any burger joint in the world. They created burgers honoring great Texas musicians like the Chili Willie (chili, cheddar, onion, and serrano peppers) and The Stevie (blue cheese, bacon, and hot sauce).

They then created “Not Burgers” to continue their experiment

It’s hard to say which stands out more about all the delicious goodies at The Jenny Layne Bakery in Flower Mound, the amazing taste of each custom cake and treat – or how perfect they all look.

Either way, customers of this one-of-a-kind shop say they love sinking their teeth into blissful works of art.

“We love to draw and create images of cakes for customers, that we then are able to build into an edible, delicious custom piece of art,” said owner Jenny Layne. “I want people to feel like they are ordering a cake from their best friend and that it’s going to look exactly like they imagined.”

Not only has The Jenny Layne Bakery gained a loyal following, but it is also known as the goto bakery for specialty cakes of any occasion – including birthdays, engagements and wedding celebrations. It also offers cookies, cake pops, cupcakes, pies, and decorated sugar cookies.

The Jenny Layne Bakery has been voted Best Cake Bakery three years in a row by Best of Denton County voters.

One look at the bakery’s website, and it’s clear Jenny and her staff have a knack for seeing something – anything – and being able to design it to fruition. Whether it’s a Minion, garden gnome, or a 50th wedding anniversary cake, the attention to detail and delectable ingredients make each treat out of this world.

That is the key ingredient for The Jenny Layne Bakery.

People clearly identify with this local girl. Jenny started her bakery in 2006 while still in school at Texas Tech. Growing up, she loved baking with her grandmothers, but it wasn’t until she went off to college that she realized how much she loved the art.

“I started this business with every intention of opening a bakery in my hometown,” she said.

“What I didn’t expect were the friendships I would develop with my amazing team of co-workers and the loyal following of customers who continue to support us.”

Now, Jenny is living her dream. Not only does she have a bakery she can be proud of, but she has a great group of dedicated and fun-loving coworkers – including a lead decorator, Antonio – who she calls her lifelong friend.

A Fresh Take on The

True Tastes of Mexico

Since its doors opened October 2013, Fresco’s Mexicana has pressed toward their goal of becoming a favorite in the Highland Village area. In 2014, they scored Best of Denton County for Family Dining & finished as a Top Three Finalist for Best Mexican Food & Best Place to Meet People.

At the time, partner & Chef de Cuisine David Mitchell commented, “That’s pretty good company to be in. We’re ‘getting there’ after only a year in business, & we still haven’t had a chance to get our food in front of a lot of people. Once we do, I think we’ll be converting some folks to Fresco’s.”

His speculation proved prophetic. This year, Fresco’s Mexicana was a Top Three Finalist in eight categories. It won seven: Best Mexican Restaurant, Best Mexican Food, Best Family Dining, Best Patio Dining, Best Guacamole, Best Queso, & Best Margaritas. As in 2014, Fresco’s finished as a Top Three Finalist in Best Place to Meet People.

“We want to say a HUGE ‘Thank you!’ to all whose votes awarded us ‘Best of’ in these categories. We know you have a sea of dining options & realize we must win your vote each time you dine with us.

Our pledge to you is, we will never stop working to be worthy of that vote,” Mitchell stated after this year’s competition.

2015 BEST MEXICAN RESTAURANT In August, Fresco’s completed renovation on the property. Newly-created paved parking areas ease congestion, & a newly-built private dining room increased the restaurant’s capacity, during the “outdoor” seasons, to 500-550 people. Its multiple dining rooms, spacious cantina, & four different patio-use options accommodate large & small private parties. Groups of 50 or more can enjoy the beautiful facilities & full-service dining on Mondays, lunch or dinner, as the restaurant is closed to the general public. 2015 BEST MEXICAN FOOD “In 2013 we presented to Highland Village the concept of excellent Mexican fare ‘a cut above’ but affordable.” David Mitchell is a student of Mexican cookery who loves the challenge of “keepin’ it real.”

To that end, he has spent 8-10 days every year for 20-plus years in the interior of Mexico, working hands-on with Mexico’s best chefs. From Baja to the Yucatan, he makes his annual trek to absorb ever more history, culture & culinary techniques from the vastly diverse regions of Mexico. Then he “translates” what he has learned into recipes that make Fresco’s food a destination in itself. One offspring of Mitchell’s Mexico excursions is Fresco’s Taste Tour menu — a bounty of seasonally-based specialty dishes. It’s a unique offering of dishes that changes periodically to feature exceptional recipes using ingredients difficult to source except at specific times of year.

“We do have some Mexican ‘comfort foods’ on our menu, but even these are a step up from subdued versions found at other restaurants,” Mitchell says.

“I start with the best recipes & highest-quality ingredients available, using locally-sourced items when appropriate. Our proteins are the highest quality beef, poultry & seafood from U.S. suppliers.

Many other ingredients are imported from reliably safe sources in Mexico to provide authentic flavors, since the climates & soils there provide nuances of taste unique to the region where they are produced.” In addition, the kitchen prepares classic “fiesta food” to delight the palate of the gourmet or any guest having an appetite for something different.

“Although many of our menu items appear familiar to those who frequent Mexican restaurants, I have, over the decades, learned from & cooked with people who have made these dishes all of their lives. Our methods of preparation closely mirror the finest ‘fiesta’ versions of those dishes. Fresco’s tries to keep adventurous offerings available for that time when guests feel like getting out of their comfort zones, but,” Mitchell emphasizes, “we work just as hard for those seeking a no-surprises meal of the highest quality in a casual, comfortable setting.”

2015 BEST QUESO Fresco’s proudly serves several quesos throughout the year as seasonality makes the ingredients available. A palette of cheeses, chiles, spices & sweet mesquite-grilled fresh tomatoes build their different quesos. “I know you can taste the difference between our silky, full-flavored dip & watered-down versions made with imitation cheese product. methods most U.S. Mexican restaurants omit because they don’t understand their purpose or want to make the effort. “Our guacamole greatness is limited only by the quality of the avocadoes that season,” Mitchell assures. “We purchase avocadoes from Mexico, & our classic tableside preparation method is proof that we take time to make it right.”

2015 BEST MARGARITAS Reagan Redus, master mixologist, has worked to create a menu of signature cocktails. He says, “we make them the way we like to drink them.” He believes that is the secret behind Fresco’s winning Best Margaritas for 2015. “Besides exotic drinks and variations of margaritas that shout ‘Try Me!’”, he notes, “our most popular House Margarita pitchers are always Happy Hour-priced.”

2015 BEST FAMILY DINING “We were excited to win Best Family Dining in 2014. Winning again in 2015 shows we are doing something right! Having been here two years, we now know many of you. Fresco’s is still growing into this, and we still make mistakes from time to time, yet our guests voted for us once more. THANK YOU for your confidence in us! Fresco’s isn’t typical. Owners Larry Folk, Reagan Redus and David Mitchell have been operating restaurants together for over thirty years. “We understand what our place in the community can be. Chef Salerno is an excellent mentor, producing amazing cooks from his restaurants. In 2005, two of his veteran cooks from “The Grotto” each won the “Iron Chef of The Southwest” competition, hosted by The Texas Chefs Association. He has also won many awards himself, including Team USA in the World Master Chefs Society and numerous competitions in France, England, Ireland, Germany, Canada, Sweden, and Thailand.

In 2014 he was again awarded with the Gold Medal at the World Cup Culinary competition in Luxembourg. In 2014, “BISTECCA” was featured on the hit Spike TV reality show called “Hungry Investors.” The restaurant staff showcased their talents and ended up winning an investment from the show. This year they are also excited about their newly remodeled “Grotto” bar that maintains its name and its legendary local appeal. On any given night, you will find the “Who’s Who of Denton County” in attendance.

In early December, after 10 long years of anticipation, Chef Salerno’s followup cookbook, “More Morris’ Way,” will hit the shelves just in time for the holiday season, making it the perfect gift for the impassioned foodie in your life.

Perhaps the most integral part of the “BISTECCA” staff is their General Manager, Stacy Miller Mahieu. Dr. Patel furthered his graduate training by earning his Certificate in Periodontics from Indiana University School of Dentistry, while concurrently earning his Master of Science in Dentistry (MSD) degree along with a minor in Oral Pathology. Throughout his educational career, Dr. Patel held numerous leadership positions and presided over several committees. He has also been involved in various research projects which have led to several publications, and has presented his findings at both the national and international level.

The training that Dr. Patel has received has given him a wide range of experience in treating advanced periodontal disease, placement of dental implants, bone regenerative procedures, as well as in periodontal plastic surgery/cosmetic procedures. Dr. Patel offers IV sedation for the comfort of the patient and to relieve any anxiety that one may have. His goal is to provide the best treatment possible to satisfy the patient’s needs and desires, as he believes that an ‘ideal’ smile is not what is seen in magazines and in textbooks, it is what the patient believes is perfect in his or her own eyes.

Dr. Patel is an active member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Dental Association, and the Texas Dental Association. He is also a Director of the local Seattle Study Club, a prestigious organization that currently has over 30 doctors from the DFW Metroplex as members.

Dr. Patel was raised in Bloomfield Hills, MI. He lived in Austin, TX for some time and is excited to be back in the state of Texas. His future goals include continuing to treat patients in private practice, earning his Master in Business Administration (MBA) degree, as well as becoming a part-time faculty member at the Baylor College of Dentistry.
