HELLO FALL

M

y family and friends tease me a little bit for doing this, but by Labor Day every year, I’m out in my front yard like clockwork putting pumpkins and other fun decor items out in celebration of fall and the cooler weather ahead.

It doesn’t matter if it’s still around 100 degrees outside — or that it’s not even October. I’m gonna be out there. I guess that’s what happens when you’re a geek for fall.

I’m not alone, either. I read an article recently that it seems like everyone starts obsessing over fall as soon as September 1st hits. It’s all about pumpkin spice lattes, baking something delicious in the oven, fires in the fireplace, piles of leaves in the front yard for the kids to play in, pumpkin patches and hayrides, sweater weather, and football games with the family.

It’s cozy time — I mean … who can argue with that?

And, of course, the transition to fall means that Halloween is right around the corner. And that means kids trick-ortreating, adults having their ghostly costume parties, and families watching scary movies at 3 a.m. I’m not much for the scary movie stuff, but Scott and the kids try their best to rope me in somehow.

These students are four of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Each of these four students with have the opportunity to move forward in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $30 million that will be offered next spring.

“I get a lot of inspiration from looking at cakes on Pinterest,” Lane said. “Then I try to recreate the idea into my boards and tables. I love trying something new.”

How to create a beautiful board: Let it Brie - We love a good centerpiece. Brie is a beautiful choice to base the entire board around. Add honeycomb on top, frost cranberries, fruit, or greenery. Also, select three to five cheeses to fill the board. We prefer soft and hard cheeses like Manchego, dill Havarti, Gouda, sage derby, or any of your favorites.

Spread the Love - Every good cracker needs a good dip.

Depending on the vision for your board, a spread could include spicy mustard, hummus, spinach artichoke dip, pub cheese, or jams.

Add Greenery - To make each board pop, we love to add fresh basil leaves, sprigs of rosemary, beautiful sage, and eucalyptus.

Nice to Meat You - Most boards include Italian meats: salami and pepperoni, but the world is your oyster. Prosciutto, thinly sliced deli meats, and jerky can be delicious additions.

- Add in stuffed olives, cornichons, or pickled anything for something tangy.

ne day while fishing on the western shore of Lake Lewisville shortly after moving to the area from California, Don Gaston couldn’t help but notice all the trash accumulating around the lake shore.

“Where I was at was not indicative of the entire lake, but there are certain places where there’s a lot of trash

— especially where I like to fish.” the Lantana resident said. “The second time I went out there, I decided to

take a garbage bag and clean it up.

I also noticed the trash collects in

areas only accessible by boat, and it got me thinking it was going to take more than a walk around the lake to clean it up properly.”

When he later snagged what turned out to be a slipper shoe instead of a fish, he decided to take it a step further. After much research and

due diligence, he launched a 501(c)3 non-profit organization called Clear Texas Lakes, a full-scale lake clean-up initiative dedicated to the continuous removal of trash and debris from Texas lake shorelines.

Gaston learned no one organization formally is in charge of cleaning Texas lakes, nor is there a budget within the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In fact, Corps officials indicated he was the first person to ask about developing such a program.

He also came across the Texas Department of Transportation’s long-running Don’t Mess with Texas campaign but found it pertained to roads and highways only. He wanted to create something like this for the area lake shores, and as a new retiree, he was looking to do something meaningful and fun.

So far, everything is paying off as he recently received a memorandum of understanding from the Corps to do his good work.

“It’s a simple concept,” Gaston said, “It’s not necessarily a ‘green’ thing it’s a ‘clean’ thing. You see trash, you pick it up, you throw it in a garbage can.

Gaston grew up in Oregon and around

1990 moved to a small town on the coast of northern California where he met

his wife Kathy and raised their children,

Dustin, Darik, and Delaney. After working about 10 years each in the lumber

industry, electrical construction, property

management, and owning an automobile glass business, he decided to retire and

was looking for a change. Kathy, a timber industry IT professional, retired around the same time.

While he said Northern California is

beautiful, the often foggy, cold, damp weather no longer suited them. They

accessible in their retirement. This brought them to the Dallas area. As a bonus, Delaney was accepted as a transfer

student and is now a junior at Southern Methodist University.

“I feel at home in Texas,” he said. “It’s a good fit for me and my family – the

people, the BBQ, the Texas Pride and all has been a delightful change.”

Gaston is no stranger to community

service. He has held several leadership

roles including boy scouts, youth baseball, site and parent council, and fund raising.

Not having experience in forming nonprofit organizations, however, Gaston reached out to SCORE Mentors, an

organization that helps people start new businesses.

Currently, Clear Texas Lakes focuses

primarily on Lake Lewisville. The team

uses a pontoon boat donated by Vista 1 Construction plus nets, grabbers,

stabbers, cables, and other equipment to remove the trash and debris. He

purchased and donated a truck and

“I want to hire people and pay a living wage in support of the effort,” he said.

“So far, we’ve relied on volunteers but need a permanent crew in addition to volunteers to be successful in the long run. It would be challenging to rely solely on volunteers to support a regular cleanup program.”

usiness entrepreneurs constantly face tough decisions about what products and services to provide and how they promote what they sell to reach their target audiences.

I had guys in other furniture businesses around Texas say ‘I wouldn’t even touch that. You’re crazy’ because they knew it was going to be more money and a harder sell.”

Long-time Adams Furniture owner Jim Smith is no exception. By the late 1990s/ early 2000s when imported products grew in stature, he made a choice that he has never regretted – that Adams would always offer American-made products whenever possible.

While American-made usually means higher prices, Smith finds most people know they are getting better quality and want to buy American products. And that’s fine with his clientele that tends to skew older (ages 40 and up) and be more apt to be middle-to-upper income. That’s been especially true for his customers from places like Robson Ranch, Justin, and Argyle that trade off each month as his top three customer areas.

“I saw companies I was dealing with, American companies like Broyhill that made good quality furniture, shut all their plants down in North Carolina and went straight to China,” he said. “It wasn’t just them. Most companies you are familiar with did the same thing.

“That was a tough decision because there haven’t been that many American companies remaining. You really had to search. Over time we have managed to get to 80-85 percent of our inventory is American-made by Americans in America.

It was probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Ultimately in my mind I knew I wasn’t going to get rich selling American made. I was doing it because in my heart I didn’t like that American jobs were being lost. It was kind of scary at first.

According to Smith, B.R. Adams started the business in 1929 as more of a general store called Adams Cash Supply and moved to its current location in 1938.

Smith, who was born in Watauga but moved to Justin in first grade, started working at Adams in 1969, became a partner in 1979, and has owned it outright since 1982. Back then, the store featured appliances, guns, hunting and fishing equipment, and licenses and furniture.

In fact, Smith understood Adams sold the first television set in Denton County.

By the mid-to-late 1990s, Smith weeded out much of those items to focus on

furniture. As big box stores like Home Depot opened to sell appliances, he was happy to let them have that business because they required a lot of service, and he didn’t have a service department.

Today, upholstered products like sofas and recliners make up about half of the 10,000 square-foot store, with dining rooms and bedrooms occupying the other half.

“Most of my pieces are solid wood made in the United States – not particle board, not veneer, not a bunch of stuff swept up and had epoxy mixed with it,” he said.

Smith said with American-made products, consumers have more choices of finishes, colors, and styles versus imports. It also tends to be made of more sustainable solid wood materials. American-made also features more and better quality foam, stronger frames, etc.

How hard has it been to buy American? Smith said he knows of only one lamp manufacturer located in the U.S. So he’s had to extend his buying reach into the rest of North America like Mexico and Canada — especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic didn’t hurt Adams Furniture in 2020 as much as road construction outside the front door that tore up the parking lot for nearly six months. While retail was shut down for six weeks at the start of the pandemic, trucks still delivered merchandise for customers to have it delivered if customers wanted. Once the highway project wrapped up last August, things began returning to normal and thankfully have continued ever since for he and his seven other employees including his daughter-in-law.

Much like most of the world, with the shutdown that came with COVID in March of last year, the couple had their fears and doubts. “Going home on March 20th, we thought for sure we were going to go out of business.”

Chris said. But the couple proved, once again, that they had the elite skill set to be successful. “We started noticing what people were running on short supply of. During the shutdown, we started selling things like bread mixes and skin care. Just anything that was needed.” Chris said. “We also filled a void that people needed for socialization. Even though our customers were interacting with us through a screen, we were able to provide that human interaction that everyone desperately needed.”

But none of the boutique’s success could have been possible without the team of people who help run the business. “We have people that have

been with us since the beginning.

Every person on our team is so welcoming and fiercely loyal and devoted.” Erin said. “Our employees are all Argyle and surrounding-area residents. They are moms who ship packages and receive new inventory while their kids are in school. They are college students who manage working part-time with their studies. They are recent college grads who are using their knowledge to help propel Charming & Main to new heights.”

In just the few years that Charming & Main has been open, they have seen a great amount of growth and success.

“It’s cool to see how far we’ve come.”

Chris said. What started out as six clothing racks in the couple’s living

rgyle Middle School 7th-grader Alivia Michaels has set out to make a huge impact on her local community. Alivia is a cheerleader and symphonic band member at AMS and is also a Cadette Girl Scout who has been a member of scouts for the past 8 years.

They have separated everything into two shifts; 11 a.m.–1 p.m. and 1 p.m.–3 p.m.

“Keep Argyle Beautiful is working on a Venmo account, so right now it has my Venmo account listed, and all funds will go straight to Keep Argyle Beautiful,” Joann said.

Alivia is a 2027 ticktocker in the Texas Lantana National Charity League and a very big fan of Keep Argyle Beautiful.

“Since she is so passionate about the environment and her town, she decided to meet with Kathy Salisbury, Chairperson of KAB, and present what she calls ‘Argyle Youth Clean-Up’ in partnership with Keep Argyle Beautiful.” Alivia’s mom, Joann said.

“Kathy and Lisa have been nothing short of super supportive and encouraging.

They continue to show their confidence in her.”

If Alivia is successful in her Argyle Youth Clean-Up, she will earn her Girl Scout Silver Award, which she is earning as an individual scout. “Alivia and her troop 7598 earned a Bronze Award as Junior Girl Scouts by planning and supplying everything an underprivileged Daisy troop needed to earn their badges.” Joann said.

Alivia’s mission statement is: “To create a passion within youth organizations to maintain a trash free Argyle. Her vision statement is: “To create a culture in today’s youth that will be more mindful of littering for our future towns.”

This event is being held Sunday, November 7th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

TRIBUTE Chief Asebedo TO

ept. 14, 2021 - Denton County Fire Marshal Roland Asebedo, 56, passed away on Monday, Sept. 13, 2021, from complications with COVID-19. A 23-year veteran law enforcement officer with more than 30 years in emergency services, also as a firefighter/EMT, Chief Asebedo saved countless lives in his dedication to serving others.

“Chief Asebedo spent his entire adult life in service to others – the epitome of a public servant,” Denton County Judge Andy Eads said. “Roland was a one-ofa-kind leader, organizer, coworker, and friend who will be greatly missed as a vital part of our Denton County family.”

Before joining the Denton County staff,

Chief Asebedo joined the Denton County Emergency Services in May 2004, working his way to Assistant Fire Marshal and Assistant Director of Development and Emergency Services. In October 2020, Judge Eads officially pinned Chief Asebedo as Denton County Fire Marshal and Director of Development and Emergency Services.

Asebedo studied Fire Science Technology

Chief Asebedo served as Fire Chief with

the Highland Village Fire Department, Fire

Marshal with the Coppell Fire Department, and Assistant Fire Chief and Fire Marshal

with the Plainview Fire/EMS Department.

Originally from Silverton, Texas, Chief

at South Plains College. He obtained his

Master Peace Officer certification in 1998 and his Associate Degree in Applied

Sciences in 2002. He received Firefighter Master, Arson Investigator Master and

Inspector Master Certifications from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection in

2002. He received an Instructor License from TCOLE in 1993 and his EMT Certification in 1999.

Funeral service arrangements are pending.

Roland Asebedo is survived by his mother, Mary Asebedo of Silverton; his wife,

Michele “Mickey” Asebedo of Denton; his son, Jordan Asebedo of Highland

Village; his daughter, Lorrin Underwood of Flower Mound; his brother, Able Asebedo of Silverton; his sister, Marilyn Leal of

Pottsboro; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was

preceded in death by his father, Johnny Asebedo, and his sister, Venita Howell.
