M

y column last month focused on Mother’s Day and all the many blessings I’ve experienced over the years.

My husband, Scott, and our kids always go out of their way to make me feel like the best mother on earth – not just with the homemade gifts and expensive dinners on that single day but every day of the year.

I’m truly blessed to be a mom and wife.

But as we turn the page to May and inch closer and closer to Father’s Day on June 16, I urge you not to forget to show love to dear ol’ dad. A father is an equally important piece to the family dynamic, and as good of a mom as I try to be, I know my kids wouldn’t be where they are today without Scott. I know I wouldn’t be where I am without him as my husband.

I also know I wouldn’t be where I am without my daddy.

Our kids are lucky to have a mom and a dad; that’s not always the case with a lot of families out there. I am certainly not trying to create a downer moment by saying that, I’m just saying that we should all make sure to let dad know how much he means. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there.

s the years continue to pass by, we know styles will always change. This doesn’t only apply to clothes, cars, and even the latest and greatest technological gadgets, but it also applies to the changing trends in our homes.

Homeowners take a significant amount of pride in the way their home looks – both inside and out – and are continually looking at ways to either reinvent the wheel or fall in line with what everyone else is doing. According to a variety of online sources, here are a few of the stylish 2019 trends to consider with your next home remodeling project.

Color of The Year Quartz Countertops Everywhere you turn, homeowners everywhere have been praising granite as the be-all-end-all for countertops in both kitchens and bathrooms. But just last year, quartz rose up as a more popular option and doesn’t appear to be slowing down in 2019. Quartz is incredibly durable and, while human-made, can mimic the look of the more expensive materials like marble and slate.

The mega-popular paint company, Sherwin-Williams, revealed late last year that Cavern Clay SW 7701 is its Color of the Year for 2019. The company describes this earthy hue color as a “warm terracotta color with ancient, elemental roots” with the soul of the American Southwest.

We’re not sure know what ancient, elemental roots look like, so stop by your nearest Sherwin-Williams to find out because it’s apparently all the rage for both homes and commercial spaces.

Black & White Decor While white-themed kitchens were ruled to be “out” in 2018, the combination of black and white furnishings offer balance and a bit of a bold look to your interior space.

Curb Appeal Our good friends over at the ML Group in Flower Mound decreed this just last year, and they’re right. A porch is the first thing visitors see when they walk up to your house. If you have a porch, and your style has changed, consider changing the color, add appropriate light fixtures, and enhance architectural details to the ceiling such as dropped beams and bead board.

Floral Print There has been a huge increase in the popularity of floral print recently. In order to successfully incorporate this into your home, you have to be sure not to use too much. Keep it subtle, such as a floral throw pillow or floral curtains. This can add a nice tone to the room.

Some outdoor trends that are becoming popular are outdoor kitchens and beautiful patio furniture. Xeriscaping is landscaping and gardening that reduces or eliminates the need for supplemental water from irrigation and ends the hassle of daily watering. Another trend we are seeing a lot of is sun shades. Sun shades are a great way to allow you to use your outdoor space even when the 100-degree temperatures arrive. They not only provide shade from the sun, but they are also a great way to protect your outdoor furniture from the scorching sun and prevent fading.

WOMAN’S EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM

T

he Woman’s Empowerment Program is a free class that teaches women about self-defense from

a two-fold perspective – the mental and physical aspects. The first hour is in the

classroom, and the second hour and a half you will hit bags, learn strikes, and how to get away from an attacker. It’s about

survival and how to take care of yourself.

The program started in 2017, in part,

because DCSO saw an increase in family

violence survivors who have graduated from the program often come back to help teach.

Our mission is to empower women

and give them the self-confidence and

violence every year. According to RAINN, millions of American women have been a victim of rape which is 90 percent of adult rape victims.

Sexual assault is never the victim’s fault, and it’s never too early to learn things they can do to protect themselves.

The four-part course is held on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon, and registration is required. It is offered once a month.

Everywhere you turn, that bond between humans and animals is unmistakable, whether it’s the little girl parading her new puppy through the neighborhood, a businessman taking time from his crowded schedule to play fetch in the park with his golden retriever, or the elderly lady at the bus stop with two kittens curled up patiently inside her oversized purse.

Reyna Taylor

A

rgyle resident Reyna Taylor’s life turned upside down after receiving a letter in the mail from the Special Olympics World Games.

The Taylor family could not contain their excitement when they read the news that Reyna had been invited to represent the United States in Equestrianism at the 2019 Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi.

Reyna was diagnosed with autism at age 4.

Shortly after her diagnosis, Reyna’s parents enrolled her in a therapeutic program, Riding Unlimited, and she quickly became enthralled with horses.

“I first got on a horse at six years old, and I didn’t want to get off,” Reyna said. “Riding horses has always made me feel free — free of any frustrations.”

During her first event in Abu Dhabi —the English Trail — Reyna lost balance, and her foot slipped out of the stirrup, which causes a disqualification at the World Games.

“It was hard to overcome; I was disappointed I couldn’t regain my 28 | ARGYLE LIVING

Despite a rocky start, she bounced back in her second appearance at the Games and earned the Bronze medal.

“Thrilled to have redeemed herself with an incredible performance, Reyna stated, “Winning the Bronze was a huge relief as a result of all my hard work; it was the best feeling to turn around and hug my coach.”

Reyna wrapped up her Olympic debut taking 6th place in her final event, Dressage. Upon the family’s arrival back home, not only were they met with a community parade in Reyna’s honor, but the town of Argyle also declared a “Reyna Taylor Day.”

While Reyna revels in her recent accomplishments from Abu Dhabi, she has already started preparing for her next events. She will return to competition at the State Special Olympics in May, followed by the upcoming Summer Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany.

Congratulations to Reyna Taylor for representing the U.S. impeccably and demonstrating the importance of inclusion for all athletes.

The hard work the duo put in has now qualified Reyna to compete on a global stage alongside the best equestrians in the world.

HEALING from Infidelity and Betrayal A

ver since he enrolled at Argyle High School, Timothy Davis has conquered milestone after milestone

while excelling in every activity he’s been involved in. His senior year is close to an

end, but no matter the task – academics, marching band, or volunteer work – those who know

ne of the great frustrations in life is losing things. We often lose our keys, a remote, and, from my experience, some even misplace their floss. Of course, even more frustrating, when we can’t make out why we lost these things in the first place. In dentistry, one of the most arduous conversations to have with patients is that they are losing their teeth, unbeknownst to them the reason why.

The cause is the dental condition

Periodontal disease is an inflammatory

disease affecting the soft and hard tissues supporting the teeth that is not immediately noticeable. It is most

often caused by bacteria beneath the gums that

causes inflammation of

depth in the tissue and adherence to the tooth. Prolonged inflammation as a result of the bacteria results in unrecoverable bone loss, which can eventually result in tooth loss.

Typically, early periodontal disease is resolved by cleaning beneath the gums.

Of course, personal home care helps as flossing the bacteria as a film above the gum prevents its progression. Other adjunctive treatment that is beneficial includes power toothbrushes, water flossing, or mouthwashes.

A preventative approach is the best way to keep from an unwanted dental surprise.

Regular dental appointments will help keep you and your dentist knowledgeable about the state of your periodontal health.
