Fever in Children

O

ne of the most common concerns we see in our clinic is for the febrile child. Most children will get a fever in response to an illness, and fortunately, most fevers are not harmful. In fact, it’s a sign that the body is working! A specific part of the brain is responsible for regulating the temperature of our bodies at around 98.6℉ or 37°C.

When the brain senses a change requiring a change in body temperature, it will raise the normal temperature to help fight off an infection. A true fever is considered any temperature above 100.4℉ or 38°C.

Except in newborns less than a month old, most fevers can be cared for at home.

If a baby is less than one month of age and has a fever measured rectally, they should be taken to an emergency room immediately as it could be a sign of a severe infection. However, for older infants and children, treatment with over-thecounter medications like acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil) along with plenty of fluids and rest, is

If the child is otherwise acting normally (wanting to play, able to drink water, urinating normally), it is safe to keep them at home and rest. Once the fever persists longer than 5 days above 102℉ or 38.8°C, the child should be evaluated by a physician for a possible bacterial infection.

It is important to note that a higher temperature does not necessarily mean a worse or more severe infection. What we like to see and hear in the clinic is that the child is well-hydrated and wants to play!

or Kasey Brown, Executive Director of the Military Veteran Peer Network (MVPN) in Denton County, the mission is clear — foster connection, hope, and healing among Veterans and their families. Living in Justin, Kasey leads with heart and purpose, guided by one simple but powerful belief — connection saves lives.

“Studies have shown that one of the best protective factors against suicide is a strong, healthy community,” Kasey explained. “Our mission is to facilitate that connection for Veterans and their families. We focus on relational support rather than transactional help, building trust organically through camaraderie. That’s where hope begins.”

At the center of MVPN’s efforts are their “Vet-Togethers,” quarterly events that bring local Veterans and their loved ones together in a relaxed, welcoming environment. Their most recent event, the 11th Annual Winter Vet-Together: Breakfast with Santa, drew more than 325 Veterans and family members. Guests enjoyed a warm meal, laughter, gifts, and even a friendly snowball fight — centered around fellowship and fun.

“We anticipated 200–300 Veterans and family members this year, and with the support of our community, it was a wonderful event," said Becca Hobby, Community Engagement Director.

Between large-scale events, MVPN continues to foster connection through monthly peer groups and outings. Activities range from hiking, fishing, and golfing to creative outlets like art, crocheting, and fly-tying. Each experience provides a safe space for Veterans to share, heal, and belong.

The organization also leads MVPN IMPACT, a hands-on initiative that mobilizes volunteers to serve local Veterans in need. “IMPACT is about getting out and making a difference,” Kasey said. “Our volunteers help with urgent needs like moving, painting, debris removal, or small home projects — things that can feel overwhelming for someone to tackle alone.”

Looking ahead, MVPN plans to expand its reach with more peer groups, outings, and larger Vet-Togethers to meet the growing need within the community.

“Our Veterans deserve connection, purpose, and support,” Kasey said. “At MVPN, we’re building that foundation—one conversation, one event, one friendship at a time.”

n 2015, we were excited to publish the very first Argyle Living magazine as a way to share the stories and lives with our friends in the neighboring community.

That very first issue featured the esteemed

and renowned family of Dr. Matt and Leigh Ann Artho. Then, a new and growing fam-

ily, they were in the beginnings of making their impact in the community.

It’s been 10 years since the inaugural issue was published, and the Arthos’ service

and community involvement has amassed

a lasting legacy that has touched the heart and souls of their hometown.

Since then, he has shaped his 13-year

Their children over the last decade have spanned the school district, with two Argyle graduates, and two more graduating Argyle High School this year. Their oldest children currently attend Oklahoma State University seeking degrees in aviation and nursing.

Their other children, along with helping volunteer, have also participated in multiple activities including academic UIL, athletics, band, cheer, and dance.

itive mark in their community and, through their example, encourage others to do so as well. Their active involvement and care for others will always leave a lasting mark on this community. We can only imagine what the next 10 years will bring. Thank you, Arthos!

n the heart of Denton County, compassion and community strength come together through the work of Denton County Friends of the Fam-

ily (DCFOF). For more than four decades, this organization has been a steadfast

source of safety, healing, and empowerment for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Founded in 1980, DCFOF remains the

only nonprofit in Denton County solely dedicated to supporting individuals and families impacted by these traumatic experiences.

At its core, the mission of DCFOF is simple yet profound — to provide compassionate, comprehensive services to those impacted by rape, sexual abuse, and domestic 22 | 35 WEST MAGAZINE

munity to promote safety, hope, healing,

justice, and prevention. It’s a mission that has transformed countless lives, and one

that continues to evolve with the community’s needs.

A Milestone Moment:

In October 2025, DCFOF marked a mon-

umental milestone with the groundbreaking of the Denton County Family Justice Center (FJC) — a visionary project that

represents a new era of coordinated care for survivors and their families. The FJC will unite multiple essential agencies

under one roof, providing a trauma-informed, collaborative space where

survivors can access everything from legal

advocacy and counseling to safe housing and community resources.

“This project is about so much more than a building,” said Toni Johnson-Simpson, MSW, Executive Director of DCFOF.

“We’re creating a launchpad for growth, healing, and generational change.”

The groundbreaking drew more than 200 community members and local leaders, including representatives from Denton

County government, law enforcement, city officials, and major community donors.

Their presence signaled not only broad

support but also a shared belief that safety and healing should never be out of reach for anyone in need.

Team (SAT), DCFOF ensures that survivors receive immediate and compassionate

How to Feed a Loon

A creamy, flavorful dish

combining tender chicken and pasta in a rich tomato-cream

sauce, all cooked together for

easy cleanup and maximum taste.

One-Pot Ingredients

Instructions

1 7-oz. jar sun-dried tomatoes in oil, chopped or julienned

1. Drain the tomatoes and hold onto the oil. Season the chicken with salt, pepper, and 1 teaspoon of dried oregano.

1½ lbs. chicken breast boneless, skinless, cut into bite-size pieces salt and pepper 2 tsp. oregano dried, divided 4 oz. pancetta cubed ¼ cup white wine optional 8 oz. mushrooms sliced ¼ tsp. red pepper flakes 2 tsp. garlic minced 3 cups chicken broth 2 cups dried pasta ½ tsp. smoked paprika 1 cup heavy cream 2 c. spinach fresh, washed, stems removed 3 Tbsp. 2. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chicken and cook, stirring often, until cooked through, about 5 to 8 minutes. Remove the chicken from the pan, place it on a plate, and set it aside.

3. Add the pancetta to the pan and cook, stirring often, until crispy, about 5 minutes.

Use a slotted spoon to transfer the pancetta next to the chicken.

4. Add the wine to the skillet and use a wooden spatula to scrape up the bits in the skillet. (or use an extra splash of broth). Let simmer until nearly evaporated, about 1 to 2 minutes.

5. Add the mushrooms and sauté until softened and beginning to release their liquid, about 4 to 5 minutes. Season with a pinch of salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Add the garlic and sauté, stirring often, for another 30 seconds.

6. Stir in the broth and bring to a simmer. Add the pasta and stir. Lower the heat slightly and cover. Cook until the pasta is tender and al dente, usually about 10 minutes. Stir the pasta every few minutes.

7. Remove the lid and stir in the sun-dried tomatoes, 1 tsp salt, ½ tsp black pepper, 1 tsp oregano, 1 tsp paprika (1 tsp), cooked chicken, and pancetta. Stir until combined.

8. Stir in the heavy cream and then the spinach. Stir until the spinach has wilted.

Enjoy!

9. Remove from heat and stir in 3 tablespoon of grated Parmesan. Serve at once with extra Parmesan passed at the table.

W

hen former MMA fighter Gemma Sheehan hung up her gloves, she knew her journey with martial arts was far from over. What began as a career in competitive fighting — where she earned a 5–1 record and became Ontario, Canada’s, top-ranked female MMA Fighter — evolved into something far more profound.

In 2017, Gemma founded Girls Who Fight, a training center dedicated exclusively to women’s and girls’ self-defense. The mission was simple yet revolutionary: create a safe, empowering space where women could learn practical, effective skills from mixed martial arts.

“Martial arts changed my life,” Gemma said. “It gave me confidence that I could succeed and overcome anything. That’s what I wanted to pass on — skills that build not just physical strength, but self-belief.”

Redefining Women’s Self-Defense What sets Girls Who Fight apart is its laser focus on women’s safety. While most martial arts programs are designed for men and competitive athletes, Gemma’s approach is built entirely around the real-world situations women face. FBI data shows that 89% of sexual assault victims are female and that women are disproportionately targeted for violence.

At Girls Who Fight, the curriculum tackles those realities head-on. The Women’s Self Defense Beginner Course, the studio’s most popular program, is a 6-week series teaching defenses for common attacks and how to use awareness, boundary-setting, and verbal strategies.

Safe Space for Growth & Connection What Gemma treasures most about her work isn’t just the skills her students master — it’s the community that forms within the walls of Girls Who Fight.

“We’ve created a culture where every woman who walks in feels seen and supported,” she explains. “There are no cliques, no egos, no intimidation—just women lifting each other up.”

A Mission That Grows with the Community Over the years, Girls Who Fight has grown into one of the largest women’s-only self-defense programs in the world, surpassing 100 active students. The studio recently launched a Leadership Program, helping girls develop character, confidence, and leadership skills alongside their self-defense training.

Their youth programs — Girls (6-14) and Teens (14-17) — focus on building “superhero-level confidence” through self de-

fense and character development training.

Beyond the physical benefits, the lessons instill self-discipline, respect, focus, resilience, and the belief that strength and kindness can coexist.

Gemma’s impact has not gone unnoticed— she was recently honored with a State of Texas Resolution from the House of Representatives recognizing her dedication to the safety and wellbeing of women and girls across the region.

Woman’s Empowerment Program

Are you, or do you know a female who is fifteen years old or older? Would you be interested in learning powerful self-defense skills that can empower both your mind and body? If so, this program is for you! You will acquire advanced skills to recognize, avoid, and defend yourself in potentially dangerous situations.

The Woman’s Empowerment Program is a free class designed to teach women self-defense from both mental and physical perspectives.

The program aims to enhance situational awareness and build self-

confidence, helping some participants develop new confidence levels while restoring it for others. You will also hear real and raw testimonies from local domestic violence survivors who have graduated from the program.

The class is structured in two parts — the first hour is spent in the classroom, followed by an hour and a half of practical training. Participants will hit bags, learn strikes, and practice techniques to escape an attacker. The focus is on survival and personal safety.

2 tbsp. Fresh Lime Juice

2 lbs of Processed Cheese

1 tbsp. Ground Cumin

1 lb Spicy Pork Sausage (For a mild option you can do a regular pork sausage)

1/2 tsp. Salt 3 Ripe Peeled Avocados, Pitted and Coarsely Chopped 1 Garlic Clove, Minced Place all the ingredients in a food processor or blender, and process until smooth. Serve with blue corn tortilla chips or quinoa chips.

24 oz Hot Salsa 1/2 cup Hot Pepper Sauce 3 Large Jalapeños Chopped (For a mild option don’t include) Melt processed cheese in a lined crock-pot . While the processed cheese melts, cook the sausage in a large skillet. After the processed cheese has melted and the sausage is cooked, mix all of the ingredients together in the crock-pot and let cook for 2 hours.
