■ The mission of the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund is to unlock educational opportunities for talented Chicago-area students facing financial need. DMSF partners with Scholars, families, and schools through high school and beyond by providing scholarships, academic programs, and personal support so that each Scholar can reach their potential.

Dear Friends,
At the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund (DMSF), we believe access to education is just the beginning. Our commitment extends far beyond financial support; we strive to be lifelong partners in our Scholars’ growth and success. The DMSF difference is about building pathways, creating possibilities, and shaping futures through opportunity, meaningful relationships, and unwavering support.
As we reflect on another remarkable year, we do so with deep gratitude. We are especially thankful to Mary Jo DeMaio for her dedicated service as Board Chair over the past two years. Her leadership, vision, and steadfast belief in our mission strengthened the organization.
We are honored to welcome Rocky Lopez as our incoming Board Chair and the first Murphy Alumnus (Class of 1999) to serve in this role. Rocky’s journey reflects the heart of our mission and underscores the lasting impact of investing in young people and the strength of our Alumni community.
That spirit of Alumni leadership has never been stronger. Graduates are returning as mentors, interviewers, Board Members, volunteers, and thought partners—enriching today’s Scholar experience. Alum Khalifah Muhammad (Class of 2016), whose story appears later in this report, exemplifies leading with purpose and giving back.
Together, we accomplished so much this year. We expanded our Summer Bridge program to include a new mental health component and launched our first Summer Bridge Career Day, connecting Scholars with Alumni and partners across diverse career paths. These enhancements reflect our belief that educational excellence is strongest when paired with holistic support, mentorship, and community.
Looking ahead, our vision remains bold and grounded in impact. We are committed to deepening Alumni engagement, expanding family support, and building infrastructure to serve even more young people.
Since 1989, DMSF has supported thousands of talented students through access to high-performing college-prep high schools, comprehensive programming, and a community that champions their success. Today, we support 509 Scholars and have served more than 2,400—building a powerful Alumni network pursuing meaningful careers across fields. It’s extraordinary. It’s the DMSF difference.
Beyond the numbers are personal stories of resilience and achievement, like current Murphy Scholar Leah Reynoso, a Class of 2026 senior at Fenwick High School and newly awarded Evans Scholar.

Year in Review
■ Another Historic Swing: 36th Annual Golf Classic Success
The 36th Annual DMSF Golf Classic was a defining moment in 2025, raising a recordbreaking $3.2 million to support the academic, social, and personal success of Murphy Scholars and reaffirming its place as one of the largest charity golf outings in the nation. Hosted across seven premier North Shore golf courses, the event brought together 532 golfers, more than 80 Murphy Caddies, and 55 corporate and community sponsors, transforming an iconic day of golf into a powerful demonstration of collective impact. Standout moments included a $901,500 paddle raise led by Murphy Alumnus Mario Rodriguez (Class of 2020), whose leadership reflected the fullcircle power of the program, and a moving evening address at Exmoor Country Club by Zariyah Lemon (Class of 2025), who shared how DMSF shaped her journey and her excitement for attending the University of Michigan as an Evans Scholar. More than a fundraiser, the Golf Classic continues to be an unforgettable experience that brings the mission to life and expands access to life-changing educational opportunities for Murphy Scholars.
■ Expansion of the Lake County Program
DMSF continued to expand its presence in Lake County by welcoming a new cohort of Murphy Scholars. Today, 24 Murphy Scholars attend partner schools across the region, including Beacon Academy, Carmel Catholic High School, Cristo Rey St. Martin College Prep, Lake Forest Academy and Woodlands Academy, Brooks School, a boarding school in Massachusetts, and Salisbury School, a boarding school in Connecticut. With continued support from Schreiber Philanthropy, DMSF is growing its impact in Lake County, reinforcing its commitment to expanding access to highquality, college-preparatory education beyond the city of Chicago and into surrounding suburban communities. With the Class of 2030 Scholars, we will serve 44 Scholars in Lake County for the 2026-2027 school year.
■ Growth in the Murphy Caddie Program & Training Engagement
DMSF’s Murphy Caddie Program remains a cornerstone summer experience for Scholars, blending meaningful employment with mentorship, skill-building, and community. Each year, more than 115 Murphy Scholars caddie at golf clubs across Chicago suburbs, earning income while building professional networks and life skills that extend far beyond the course. This summer, the program deepened its impact through expanded caddie training led by Murphy Caddie Alumni, Board Members and corporate partners, offering new caddies hands-on preparation and personal guidance that strengthened confidence and connection from day one. Scholars also participated in immersive residential experiences at Lake Forest College (boys) and Elmhurst University (girls), where they lived on campus and engaged in Alumni-led conversations, volunteer projects, and intentional community-building activities that fostered independence, belonging, and peer support. After three summers of caddying and strong academic achievement, Scholars may apply for the Evans Scholarship, a full tuition and housing scholarship to college. In 2025, 19 Murphy Scholars earned this scholarship, bringing the total to more than 390 Evans Scholars since the program’s inception.
■ College Visits That Shape Murphy Scholar Decisions
Our College Counseling program continued to deepen its commitment to guiding Scholars toward higher education by facilitating a series of college trips and immersive campus experiences. These campus visits, financial aid workshops, and college-prep experiences gave Scholars and their families first-hand exposure to a range of college environments and resources. During the 2024–2025 academic year, 76 Scholars participated in five college trips that spanned 19 college campuses, gaining firsthand exposure to a wide range of institutions, resources, and campus cultures. These experiences included visits to schools such as the University of Michigan, Howard University, Georgetown University, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, among others. Through these trips, Scholars gained greater clarity on college fit; academically, socially, and financially.

the Way
When Leah Reynoso entered Fenwick High School, she arrived with ambition, curiosity, and determination. As a first-generation college student from Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood, she knew that navigating a rigorous college prep school would require more than academic readiness. It would require confidence, community, and support. As a Murphy Scholar, she found all three.
“Summer Bridge made the transition so much easier,” Leah shares. “It gave me time management tools, study habits, and even builtin friends I’m still close with today.”
At Fenwick, Leah doesn’t just participate, she leads. She served as president of the Hispanic Outreach and Latino Awareness Club and founded the school’s first-ever mariachi band.
“I wanted to add something that wasn’t already there,” she explains. “Mariachi was always part of my life, and sharing it created a connection for so many people.”
Leah also found community through crosscountry and track. When an injury sidelined her,
she stepped onto the stage, earning a lead role in Legally Blonde. Beyond campus, Leah puts her leadership into action as a caddie at Skokie Country Club and as a Murphy Schmitt Scholar, supporting service projects that strengthened her commitment to giving back.
Today, Leah will be attending the University of Michigan as an Evans Scholar. She plans to pursue a Biopsychology, Cognition, and Neuroscience major on a pre-med track, with aspirations of tackling healthcare disparities.
When asked what being a Murphy Scholar means to her, Leah’s answer comes easily. “DMSF didn’t just support my education. They helped shape who I am. One day, I want to come back and be a mentor. That’s the kind of community this is.”
Leah’s journey is a powerful reminder that when young leaders are given support, they don’t just find their voice, they use it to lift others along the way. ■

A two-week, hands-on program that prepares Murphy Scholars for the transition to high school through academic skillbuilding and community connection.
Murphy Caddie Program » Scholars grow time management, networking, and communication skills while caddying, gaining eligibility for the Evans Scholarship, which provides full tuition and housing for college.
Mentoring » Scholar and mentor pairings provide guidance, encouragement, and insight into navigating high school, college, and career pathways.

Who We Serve
Khalifah Muhammad knows exactly where he comes from. Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side in the Calumet Heights neighborhood, home is still defined by familiar landmarks and deep family roots.
Growing up, Khalifah was surrounded by extended family and deeply involved in sports and extracurriculars. “That was my life,” he laughs, listing tennis, golf, soccer, baseball, and basketball. Football was the exception. He attended Ariel Community Academy in Hyde Park, where encouragement from teachers, paired with his mother’s awareness of DMSF through family members who are Alumni, led him to apply.
As a Class of 2016 Murphy Scholar at De La Salle Institute, Khalifah participated in the Murphy Schmitt Scholars Program and the Murphy Caddie Program, experiences that shaped his future. Caddying—something he never imagined for himself—became transformational. Summers spent living in college dorms, working long days on the course, and managing his own finances instilled discipline, independence, and confidence. “It taught me work ethic and drive,” he says. “It helped me dream a little bit bigger.”
The relationships he built on the golf course opened doors, leading to Khalifah’s first internship and a full-time role after graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2020 as an Evans Scholar. Motivated to expand his opportunities, he later earned his MBA and now serves as an Analyst at the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board.
Today, Khalifah gives back by serving as Vice Chair of DMSF’s Associate Board, viewing his return as both a responsibility and way to express gratitude. “If you’ve done it right and people come back out of their own volition, then somewhere along the way a positive impact was made,” he says. For Khalifah, coming back is about community, leadership, and helping the next generation dream bigger than he once did. ■

Each fall, volunteers review applications and interview 8th grade applicants, helping to select the next class of Murphy Scholars. Your participation ensures we continue to grow and strengthen our community.
■ Provide Career Support to Murphy Alumni
Our Murphy Alumni seek internships, externships, job shadowing, and postgraduation employment. You can also host career exploration events with your own companies or participate in panel discussions with our young Alumni.

Mentor a Murphy Scholar
Become a mentor and guide a Murphy Scholar on their academic and professional journey. Help them develop leadership skills, explore career paths, and be a consistent support system.

Get Involved with our Murphy Caddie Program
Be a part of the DMSF Summer Caddie program by becoming a guest speaker and sharing your personal and professional journey with our Scholars or helping to train our incoming caddies. You can also request a Murphy Caddie for your golf club.
