About usAbout us Specialist Engineering Services (SES) was established in Ireland in 2009 to deliver highly specialist survey and inspection services, leveraging the use of emerging specialist technology and trained staff to deliver data rich digital information. The outputs generated by our services optimise the use of geospatial data to empower our clients in making engineering decisions.

SES continues to survey and inspect infrastructure throughout the UK using a combination of specialist technology and trained staff. SES aims to use the latest workflows and technology to provide the client with all the information required to determine how structures are built and their current condition. This approach, combined with our dedication to geospatial certainty, allows for truly value-engineered surveys and inspections.

Utilising our team and consultants’ skills, knowledge, and experience, we devise and undertake unique solutions to clients’ SES operative scanning a historic tunnel wall to determine the make up problems. A combination of non-destructive and located defects within. A GSSI 900MHz antenna was used for the technology, remote systems, and targeted survey. intrusive works are used to collect extensive data from site. This is then processed, analysed, and interpreted to provide the client with concise information in a usable format. Thus, the SES department is uniquely positioned to support clients, engineers, and asset owners. Consultation There has been little change in the inspection and investigation of structures over the last 30 years, despite significant advancements in technology. We still see services such as tap testing, large scale scabbing/breakouts and extensive coring are still being requested by our clients, based on the long-standing acceptance of these traditional testing approaches. If eddy current or Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) systems are used, they are scoped to small random areas. While this approach works, it can result in subjective data collection and the potential to miss key features or defects. There is a better and cheaper way which utilises the advancements in technology and data analytics to deliver digital insights at scale while minimising physical damage to the asset.

The SES department seeks to change this process through a more holistic approach to inspections and investigations. Using non-destructive technology to cover the entire structure allows for a better understanding of the building, including its construction and any defects. The use of non-destructive systems, such as GPR, allow for rapid, objective, and extensive data collection from a site that can then be used to undertake targeted intrusive works, reducing costs and disruption.

Many workflows and systems for these holistic surveys have been developed recently and are not always known to the wider market. Therefore, our approach is to discuss what information is required and why. Our consultants will work with the client and project engineers to fully understand what’s required from the works. The team will then draw on their expertise to devise the best approach to acquire data and produce the necessary details.

Structural analysis Structures across the world are built from plans and drawings, but these often get lost, destroyed, or become unreadable. However, where refurbishment and extensions are undertaken, it is imperative that construction details are known. Murphy Geospatial has a proven track record in undertaking Structural analysis instigations to create reliable, retrospective as-built records.

The methodology permits the generation of detailed information on the structure, enabling structural strength calculations and mapping of where the construction deviates from the original specification. This allows for a better understanding of the building, even when plans are available.

We use a combination of holistic non-destructive survey methods alongside targeted intrusive works. These works can be undertaken remotely, where required, to reduce risk to personnel.

Our team can complete surveys to ascertain construction details of elements and entire structures, including:

Size and shape Reinforcement details (type, cover, spacing, size, etc.), Structural strength/variations (cranking bars, hogging reinforcement, etc.)

Foundation details Concrete strength and condition Construction thicknesses of roads, slabs, screed, stone, etc On some sites, the exact bar locations are not required; only the position of a few bars or tendons are essential. This can be for clearing an area for drilling or accurately creating a new fixing plate to avoid bars and services.

The SES team can precisely map the location of rebars, shear links, and post tension tendons using GPR. Their positions can be marked up on-site or plotted onto a highly accurate CAD model.

Structural quality assurance Once built, it can be hard to determine if an asset or structure is built to the required specification, especially when an element is covered in concrete. Several infrastructure failures have resulted from poor construction that was not discovered. Using Murphy Geospatial's SQA processes, these defects can be mapped , allowing for remedial works to be undertaken.

Using non-destructive methods, it is possible to ‘see’ into the subsurface and map features. These can be compared to plans and specifications to determine the quality of the construction and can be undertaken on-site for new or remedial works or at the end of a construction line for pre-cast units.

Structural condition surveys The failure of individual elements is often enough to cause the collapse of the whole structure. It is therefore imperative to undertake regular condition surveys. In the past, these inspections have been either basic visual inspections or have required extensive destructive works that risk further damage to the structure.

It is now possible to ‘see’ inside structures to map defects and prevent issues from becoming serious. The SES department uses the latest systems to provide an in-depth, non-intrusive analysis of concrete and masonry structures.

We assess the condition of existing structures through our knowledge and expertise as well as the use of non-destructive technology. Our workflows allow for a comprehensive survey of the structures, permitting extensive details and reducing the risk of missing key elements. A detailed understanding of what is happing within the structure is made possible because of our team’s experience and data simulations. This can then be followed up with targeted intrusive works, if required.

Heritage buildings Across the UK, there are heritage buildings that have stood for hundreds of years and some over a thousand.

Most of these buildings are listed, and it is not possible, or is extremely complex, to undertake inspection works. Therefore, it can be a high-risk venture to commence remedial works to keep these buildings maintained for another hundred years.

Non-destructive technology is ideal for historical and listed buildings, reducing the need for any intrusive or damaging works. Using a mixture of ground-penetrating radar and ultrasonics, the SES team can determine the construction and condition of a historic building without damaging the building.

These works can include:

Locating embedded targets (ties, dowels, cramps, services, etc.)

Mapping corrosion of metal within stonework – Regents Street Disease Determining building construction details Mapping timber floor and ceiling construction Void and delamination surveys Chimney flue mapping

High risk inspections Not all structures, or their elements, are easily accessible, with numerous features being in high-risk environments. This can include confined spaces and working at height or below water. All of these can, for the most part, be undertaken by highly trained staff; however, this still comes at great risk and expense.

Personnel safety is key to inspections, and the risk can now be removed or reduced significantly significantly through the use of technology.

The specialist engineering services work with internal and external partners to provide remote access inspections and investigations to high-risk areas. This includes the use of aerial and submersible drones along with crawlers within pipes or climbing walls. SES can safely and cost-effectively undertake visual and non-intrusive surveys of a wide range of high-risk locations.

Communication Regardless of the data collection methods, innovation of the process, or expanse scanned, there is no value until the data is interrogated and the information has been extracted.

At Murphy Geospatial, we pride ourselves on the communication of information. Working within our GeoCERT® system clearly and intuitively, our teams process, analyse, and interpret all data collected on-site.

This allows the key information to be extracted, distilled and presented to the client as cleanly as possible.

All works are covered by a written report - the report details the why and how the survey was undertaken, combined with the survey results. Our reports are designed to provide clear, relevant information to the client them needing to understand the theory of the data collection.

Alongside the written report, we provide information in a format required by the client. This can include:
