Liszt Ferenc: Prométheusz, S. 99 Az 1850-es weimari Herder-ünnepségekhez kapcsolódott Liszt, amikor a költő egyik drámájához, A láncaitól megszabadított Prométheuszhoz komponált több kórustételt és egy nyitányt – ez utóbbit később szimfonikus költeményeinek sorába illesztette. Liszt a görög mitológia lázadó titánját műve előszavában úgy jellemezte, mint a „bátorság, szenvedés, kitartás és megváltás, az ember számára megközelíthető legmagasabb hivatás elérésére való merész törekvés” szimbóluma. Ahogy a szimfonikus költemények legtöbbjének, a Prométheusz dramaturgiájának is alapvonulata a szenvedés és a megdicsőülés – Malheur et Gloire! –, amire maga Liszt hívja fel a figyelmet. A darab programja „villámló kifejezést” igényel, „zenei karaktere a kétségbeesés hangja, mely végül, a büszke, dacos kitartás eredményeként, győzelemmé válik”.

Franz Schubert – Liszt Ferenc: Der Doppelgänger – baritonra és zenekarra Liszt az 1830-as évek végén került szorosabb kapcsolatba Schubert zenéjével. A bécsi zeneszerző már egy évtizede nem élt, amikor megélénkült a művei iránti érdeklődés. Liszt számos dalából készített szólózongora-átiratot, melyek közül néhányat rendszeresen játszott koncertjein. A Der Doppelgänger Schubert utolsó dalainak egyike, a Hattyúdalok című posztumusz, tizennégy dalból álló ciklusban kapott helyet, Liszt az egész sorozatot átültette zongorára. A ciklus hat dala – köztük a Der Doppelgänger – Heineszövegekre készült. Lisztnek nemcsak a dal zenéje, hanem a kísérteties pszichológiai állapotot festő szövege is különösen fontos volt. A zenekari változat 1860-ban Weimarban született.

Liszt Ferenc: Az ősi sírbolt (Die Vätergruft) – baritonra és zenekarra Ludwig Uhland balladájából Liszt legelőször 1844-ben komponált zongorakíséretes dalt. A művet jóval később átdolgozta, halála előtt nem sokkal pedig zenekarra is átültette. „Liszttel kapcsolatban még mindig nagyon sok a felfedeznivaló. Ilyen meglepetést hozunk most magunkkal mi is, amikor a kiváló baritonnal, Thomas Hampsonnal két olyan zenekari dalt mutatunk be (Le juif errant, Weimars Toten) – ráadásul korhű hangszereken –, amelyek még soha nem kerültek közönség elé. A harmadik dal, a Die Vätergruft Liszt utolsó műve, halála évében, 1886 februárjában írta Budapesten. Megtiszteltetés, hogy éppen itt, a Müpában mutathatjuk be, ahová mindig meghatottan térek vissza” – mondta Martin Haselböck. A dal zenekari változatának egyetlen korabeli előadásáról lehet csak tudni, a mű 1886. április 9-én egy londoni koncerten hangzott el.

Az átkomponált, szabad A-B-A formájú, fenségesen zord hangvételű darabban a hangszeres kíséret anyaga teljesen elkülönül az énekszólamtól, a kompozíció pedig olyan hatást kelt, mintha egy szimfonikus költemény bevezetése lenne. A zene tónusa tökéletesen illeszkedik a versben festett szituációhoz: egy idős harcos utolsó útját követhetjük, melynek végén belép a kápolnába, ahol dicső ősei nyugszanak. A mélyből felhallatszó csodás énekre az idős lovag így felel: „Régi hősök szellemei, köszöntésetek halálomat hirdeti, közétek lépek, méltó vagyok rá!”. Kőkoporsójába lép, fejét pajzsára hajtja, keze megpihen kardja markolatán, és békében elalszik. A szellemhangok fokozatosan eltűnnek, majd újra csend uralkodik a kápolnában.

Liszt Ferenc: A bolygó zsidó (Le juif errant) – baritonra és zenekarra Az 1847-es Le juif errant egy Béranger-vers megzenésítése, mely a zeneszerző életében publikálatlan maradt. A Peter Raabe által készített műjegyzékben (1934) ugyan szerepelt már, de kiadásra még ekkor sem került, elsősorban azért, mert a dal Weimarban őrzött kézirata inkább munkapéldánynak tűnik, a tisztázat pedig valószínűleg elveszett vagy nem is készült el, illetve hiányzik a dal első 37 üteme. Az biztosan tudható, hogy egyike volt azon kompozícióknak, melyeket Liszt 1848-ban azzal adott át August Conradinak, hogy készítse el zenekari változatukat. A bolygó zsidó hangszerelése is elkészült, a partitúra két példányban maradt fenn: egy munkapéldány – ebben Liszt javításai és hangszerelési javaslatai is láthatóak – és egy tisztázat, mindkettő Conradi kézírásával. A zenekari változat nélkül a zongorakíséretes eredetit nem is lehetne rekonstruálni. „Béranger verse szubjektív, emócióval teli panaszdal, a bolygó zsidó egyes szám első személyben megfogalmazott monológja, ahol különösen nagy hangsúlyt kapott a hős emberi szenvedésének, magányának megrázó leírása. Liszt számára kiemelt jelentőségű az utolsó négy sor, melyben a bolygó zsidó az emberek felé fordul: »Ti, akikből hiányzik az együttérzés, reszkessetek az én különös kínlódásomtól, amely éppen nem isteni kínlódás, hanem emberi, s mely Isten boszszúja!« Mindebben nem nehéz felismerni a magányos, otthontalan művész allegóriáját” – olvashatjuk Szitha Tünde elemzésében.

Liszt Ferenc: Weimari holtak (Weimars Toten) – baritonra és zenekarra A Weimari holtak hangszerelt változata ugyanabban az 1848-as kötetben található, melyben A bolygó zsidó zenekari változata is fennmaradt. Szövege Franz von Schober (1796–1882) verse. A költő Schubert baráti köréhez tartozott, de az 1840-es években Liszttel is szorosabb kapcsolatban állt.

A Weimars Toten a Goethe születésének 100. évfordulóján kiadott kötetben jelent meg. A vers egyfajta szellemidézés, Schober arra kéri a weimari aranykor nagyjait – Wielandot, Herdert, Schillert és Goethét –, hogy új hajnallal ajándékozzák meg a nyomukba szegődött költőnemzedékeket.

Anton Bruckner: 3. (d-moll) szimfónia – 1889-es változat Bruckner 3. szimfóniája több változatban maradt fenn. Az elsőt (1872–1874) „Wagner-szimfóniának” tervezte (több idézetet is tartalmaz az operaszerzőtől), a darab kifejezetten formabontó, és már-már a szertelenség benyomását kelti a hallgatóban. A második változatban (1876–1877) Bruckner szigorúbb formálásra és intenzívebb tematikus munkára törekedett, ám az eredmény nem hozta meg a kellő sikert. A harmadik változat (1888–1889) Franz Schalk erőteljes közreműködésével alakult ki, mind a hangszerelés, mind az egyes tételek dimenzióit alapvetően változtatták meg a beavatkozások. Minden egyes változatnak fennmaradt egy-egy revideált verziója is, így a Bruckner-irodalom tulajdonképpen (minimum) hat különböző műalakot tart nyilván. Természetesen nem Bruckner az egyetlen szerző a 19. század második felében, aki egy-egy kompozícióján egész életében dolgozott, azokat előadásról előadásra változtatta, alakította, s ezzel zavarba hozta a definitív műalak létezését tételező zeneesztétákat, zenetudósokat.

Thomas Hampson A világhírű bariton számos nemzetközi kitüntetés és rangos egyetemi cím birtokosa, művészi pályafutásáért és a nemzetközi kulturális életben betöltött szerepéért a legmagasabb elismerésekben részesítették. Operaszerepeinek száma meghaladja a nyolcvanat, a világ legrangosabb színházainak állandó fellépője, több mint 170 lemezfelvételt készített, köztük Grammy- és Edison-díjas, illetve Grand Prix du Disque-nyertes albumokat. Elkötelezett dalénekes, a heidelbergi Dalakadémia művészeti igazgatója, visszatérő partner a Barenboim–Said Akadémia berlini Schubert-hetén.

Orchester Wiener Akademie A közel négy évtizede működő együttes a nemzetközi koncertélet egyik meghatározó historikus zenekara. Produkcióit élénk előadásmód és virtuozitás jellemzi, újszerű és innovatív koncertprogramjait széles körű érdeklődés kíséri. A zenekar korhű hangszereken játszott repertoárja – a nagy remekművek mellett komoly hangsúlyt fektetve a kevéssé ismert műalkotások felfedezésére – a barokktól a romantika korszakáig terjed. A nemzetközi turnék és a bécsi Musikvereinben adott állandó koncertek mellett a zenekar működésének különösen jelentős területe a RESOUND-projekt: a zeneművek első előadásainak helyszínén, korabeli hangszereken megvalósuló koncertek új ismeretekkel gazdagítják egy-egy zeneszerzőről, zeneszerzői stílusról való tudásunkat.

Martin Haselböck Az osztrák orgonaművészt és karmestert napjaink egyik legjelentősebb előadóművészeként tartják számon. Zenészcsaládban született, tanulmányait Bécsben és Párizsban végezte. Orgonistaként több nemzetközi versenyen szerepelt sikerrel, s olyan kiváló karmesterek mellett dolgozott, mint Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel, Wolfgang Sawallisch vagy Riccardo Muti.

Vezető kortárs zeneszerzők, például Ernst Krenek, Alfred Schnittke, Cristóbal Halffter dedikáltak számára műveket. Több mint ötven szólólemezt készített, a Liszt Ferenc összes orgonaművéből rögzített gyűjteményes kiadványt rangos díjakkal – Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, Diapason d’Or és a magyar Liszt-díj – ismerték el. 1985-ben hozta létre az Orchester Wiener Akademie-t, mellyel hatvannál is több lemezfelvételt készített. Ferenc Liszt: Prometheus, S. 99 Liszt’s contribution to the 1850 Weimar celebrations of Herder was a group of choruses and an overture for Prometheus Unbound, the play by the poet.

He later added the overture to his symphonic poems as Prometheus. In the preface, he described the rebellious titan of Greek mythology as a symbol of “courage, suffering, fortitude and redemption, the bold striving to achieve the loftiest mission accessible to man.” As in most of the symphonic poems, the dramaturgy of Prometheus is based on suffering and glory – Malheur et Gloire! – as Liszt himself was quick to point out. The programme of the piece requires a “flashing expression,” whose “musical character is the sound of despair which turns, through bold and defiant persistence, into triumph.”

Franz Schubert – Ferenc Liszt: Der Doppelgänger – for baritone and orchestra Liszt became more familiar with Schubert’s music in the late 1830s. The Viennese composer had been dead for a decade when interest in his works began to grow. Liszt transcribed several of his songs for the solo piano, some of which he regularly played at his concerts. Der Doppelgänger was one of Schubert’s last songs, and was included in the cycle of fourteen lieder that was published posthumously as the Swansongs. Liszt transcribed the entire cycle for the piano. Six of these songs, including Der Doppelgänger, was based on Heine’s poems. Liszt laid great store by not only the music of the song, but the lyrics as well, which describe an eerie state of mind. He wrote the orchestral version in 1860, in Weimar.

Ferenc Liszt: Die Vätergruft (The Fathers’ Crypt) – for baritone and orchestra Ferenc Liszt first used Ludwig Uhland’s ballad for a song with piano accompaniment in 1844. He revised it much later, and shortly before his death he wrote an orchestral version. “There is still a great deal to discover about Liszt. We’re bringing you now a surprise of this kind, two songs for baritone and orchestra (Le juif errant, Weimars Toten) which have never been performed for an audience. We will be playing period instruments, and enlist the help of the great baritone, Thomas Hampson. The third lied, Die Vätergruft, was the last piece Liszt wrote in February 1886, in the year of his death, in Budapest. It is an honour to present it here of all places, at Müpa, where I am always moved to return.” (Martin Haselböck) The orchestral version of the song is known to have been performed at the time only once, at a London concert on 9 April 1886.

In the revised version, which has a free A-B-A form, and sounds majestically grim, the material of the instrumental accompaniment is completely separate from the vocal part, and the composition gives the impression of being the introduction to a symphonic poem. The tone of the music is in perfect harmony with the situation described in the poem: we accompany an aged warrior, who steps inside the chapel where his glorious ancestors rest. A wondrous song is heard from the deep, to which he responds: “Spirits of old heroes, your greeting proclaims my death. Let me join you, I am worthy.”

The old knight steps inside his stone coffin, rests his head on his shield, his hand on the grip of his sword, and falls asleep peacefully. The spirit voices dissipate, silence returns to the chapel.

Ferenc Liszt: Le juif errant (Wandering Jew) – for baritone and orchestra Le juif errant, from 1847, is the setting of a poem by Béranger. It has never been published in the composer’s life. Although it was already listed in Peter Raabe’s catalogue (1934), it was not published even then, mainly because the manuscript, which is kept in Weimar, seems to be a working copy, and the fair copy has probably been lost or was never completed. Also, the first 37 bars are missing. What is certain is that the song was one of the compositions Liszt gave to August Conradi in 1848 with instructions to prepare their orchestral versions. Even the instrumentation of The Wandering Jew was completed, and two copies of the score are extant, both in Conradi’s hand: one includes Liszt’s corrections and suggestions for the instrumentation, the other is a fair copy. The original version, with the piano accompaniment, would be impossible to reconstruct without the orchestral variety. “Béranger’s poem is a subjective, emotional lament, the soliloquy of the Wandering Jew, with a particular emphasis on the moving rendering of the hero’s suffering and loneliness. The last four lines, in which the Wandering Jew turns to people, were of particular importance for Liszt: ‘You who lack sympathy should quail at my curious agony, which is no divine agony, but human, and is God’s revenge!’ It is not difficult to read this as an allegory of the lonely, homeless artist,” writes Tünde Szitha.

Ferenc Liszt: Weimars Toten (Weimar’s Dead) – for baritone and orchestra The orchestral version of Weimar’s Dead can be found in the same 1848 volume in which the orchestral version of The Wandering Jew has survived.

The lyrics is a poem by Franz von Schober (1796–1882), who was a friend of Schubert’s, and was more closely associated with Liszt in the 1840s. Weimars Toten appeared in the volume that was published to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Goethe’s birth. The poem is a conjuration of the spirits, with Schober asking the greats of Weimar’s golden age – Wieland, Herder, Schiller and Goethe – to gift a new dawn to the generations of poets who follow them.

Anton Bruckner: Symphony No. 3 in D minor – 1889 version Bruckner’s symphony has survived in multiple versions. The first (1872–1874) was planned to be a “Wagner symphony” (and it does contain various quotes from the opera composer): it is decidedly unconventional, and all but leaves the listener with a sense of extravagance. In the second (1876–1877), Bruckner sought a more rigorous form and more intensive thematic work, but the result did not meet with much success. Franz Schalk made a marked contribution to the third version (1888–1889), effecting decisive changes in the instrumentation and the dimensions of the individual movements. Each version has a revised variant, so (at least) six forms of the work are known to students of Bruckner. Of course, Bruckner was not the only composer in the second half of the 19th century who would work on a composition throughout his life, changing it from one performance to the next, thereby confusing critics and musicologists who would prefer to go by a single, definitive form.

Thomas Hampson The world-famous baritone holds numerous international awards and prestigious university titles, and has received the highest accolades for his artistic work and role in international cultural life. There are over eighty roles in his opera repertoire, and he is featured at leading theatres around the world. He has made more than 170 records, including Grammy-, Edison- and Grand Prix de Disque-winning albums. He is a committed singer of songs, the artistic director of the Heidelberg Lied Academy, and a returning partner of the Barenboim-Said Academy’s Schubert Week in Berlin.

Martin Haselböck The Austrian organist and conductor is considered one the most significant performing artists of our time. He was born into a family of musicians, and he studied in Vienna and Paris. As an organist, he successfully participated at various international competitions, and worked with such outstanding conductors as Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel, Wolfgang Sawallisch and Riccardo Muti. The leading contemporary composers who dedicated works to him include Ernst Krenek, Alfred Schnittke and Cristóbal Halffter. He has released over fifty solo records, and his recording of Ferenc Liszt’s complete organ works was acknowledged with the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, the Diapason d’Or and the Hungarian Liszt Prize. He founded the Orchester Wiener Akademie in 1985, and has recorded more than sixty albums with them. They have won several awards for their performance of Liszt’s works for symphonic orchestra on period instruments (The Sound of Weimar).

Orchester Wiener Akademie Established almost four decades ago, the group is a leading historically informed orchestra of the international scene. Their productions are marked by a lively performance mode and virtuosity, their novel and innovative concert programmes always meet with great interest. The repertoire they play on historic instruments spans the period from the Baroque to Romanticism, and along with the great masterpieces, they lay much emphasis on lesser-known works. In addition to the international tours and the regular concerts at the Musikverein in Vienna, the RESOUND project is a particularly important facet of the orchestra’s activity: as they give concerts at the venues where the works were first performed, using period instruments, they enrich our knowledge of the composers and their styles.
