FISCHER ÁDÁM Egy megvalósult álom Ismét elhangzik A nibelung gyűrűje teljes egészében, négy egymás követő estén, úgy, ahogyan azt Richard Wagner másfél évszázada megálmodta. Óriási lehetőség ez az előadóművész számára, de a művészi felelősség sem kisebb: meg kell győznünk mindenkit, hogy az általunk elképzelt Wagner-fesztivál valóban felveszi a versenyt bármely Wagner-produkcióval a világon. Reméljük – bár a közhiedelem szerint a Ringet igazán megismerni csak a bayreuthi Festspielhausban lehet –, hogy a Müpában sikerül olyan produkciót létrehoznunk, amely mind zenei, mind színpadi vonatkozásban újat és értékeset teremt. Valóra vált, amiről annyit álmodoztunk: az ilyen nagyszabású, megszállott víziók megvalósítására azonban csak ritkán adódik lehetőség, mivel feltétlenül kell hozzá egy másik megszállott, aki hisz az alkotó látomásában – ahogyan II. Lajos bajor király hitt annak idején Wagnerében –, és hajlandó azt finanszírozni. Mi ezt a hitet és segítséget kaptuk meg a Müpától. Ez a gesztus és Wagner zenéje iránti hódolatunk kötelez bennünket arra, hogy mi, előadók tudásunk legjavát adva bizonyítsuk: méltók vagyunk partnerünk és a közönség bizalmára.

Wagner Ringjénél izgalmasabb és intenzívebb muzsikát nem tudok elképzelni. Ennek a több mint tizenöt órányi zenének minden egyes taktusa mákony, amely azonnal rabul ejti a hallgatót – és az előadót is. Hihetetlennek tűnhet, de a Ring vezénylése közben nem érzek semmiféle fáradtságot, kimerültséget, és a végén legszívesebben újrakezdeném.

Azt is tudom azonban, hogy Wagner csak akkor hathat így, ha az előadás körülményei megfelelőek – ezzel kapcsolatban személyes emlékeim is vannak. Nyolc-kilenc évesen találkoztam először Wagner zenéjével az ötvenes évek bayreuthi rádióközvetítéseinek köszönhetően, amelyeket nálunk családi körben szinte vallásos tisztelet övezett mint a nyugati világgal való kapcsolattartás ritka és kiemelkedő kulturális jelentőségű eszközeit. Nem szépítem: borzalmas volt ezeket a közvetítéseket hallgatni. Olyan kibírhatatlanul hosszadalmas nyűglődésnek éreztem, hogy Wagner iránti mai lelkesedésem gyakorlatilag csodának számít. Éppen ezért szeretném megtakarítani a mai, az internetes és videoanimációs kultúrában otthonosan mozgó fiataloknak az ismerkedés kacskaringóit, az előítéletek útvesztőjét.

Wagner nekik is szól – sőt nekik szól igazán, csak meg kell találnunk a módot, hogy ők is felfedezhessék a zene varázsát. Tudom: elég egyetlen igazi élmény, mert akit egyszer rabul ejtett, az többé nem szabadul.

Olyan operaelőadást akarunk létrehozni, amely hadat üzen az unalomnak, az előadó-­művészet legnagyobb ellenségének. A mi Ringünkben a történet kibontakozása közben a 19. századi színház realitás-illúziójának legelemibb alkotó­részei is lebomlanak, hogy más formában, eltávolítva, modern asszo­ ciációkat keltve álljanak össze újra. Célunk – tudom, merész szavak – a jövő operajátszása, hiszen a színház mindig, immár mintegy háromezer éve, a mindenkori máról szól. Az alkotás örök, és minden generációt megszólít – de amit mond, értelmezni kell.

Az értelmezés mikéntje és hogyanja, egy-egy előadás egyedi jellegzetes­sége a Budapesti Wagner-napok esetében a zenés színház típusainak keveredésén is alapul. Fesztivál lévén, meghívott és változó előadó-gárdával dolgozunk, ugyanakkor a körülmények egyszerisége ellenére a produkció egysége, a koncepció összefüggéseinek megmutatása feltétlen elsőbbséget élvez. Keveredik benne a báb- és árnyjáték, a vetítés, a film és a tánc, ráadásul az énekesek feladata sem kimondottan szokványos. A szerepek és a szereplők egysége esetenként szétválik; a megszemélyesítés, az azonosulás szuggesztivitása mellett a történet folyamatának az is különös súlyt ad, hogy egy-egy szerepet az énekes mellett esetleg más is megjelenít. A különleges megoldások sem kőbe vésett attrakciók: a tapasztalatok nyomán évről évre változhatnak, hiszen Bayreuth és Wagner szelleméhez híven a produkciót a szüntelen kísérletezésnek, tökéletesítésnek kell meg­töltenie élettel, lendülettel. Az előadás egyaránt támaszkodik a korhű és a modern ­színpadi elemekre – így tudjuk leginkább megmutatni Wagner merész és ma is aktuális modernségét.

A nibelung gyűrűje Cselekmény Előeste – A Rajna kincse A földi világban. A rajnai sellők könnyelmű játékát Alberich, a nibelung zavarja meg.

Miután a sellők elutasítják, és nem töltheti velük a kedvét, elrabolja tőlük az aranykincset. Ehhez esküvel le kell mondania a szerelemről.

Az istenek birodalmában. Házasélete békéjének megőrzése érdekében Wotan a két óriással, Fafnerrel és Fasolttal várat építtetett felesége, Fricka számára.

Az építőknek fizetségül Fricka testvérét, Freiát ígérte oda, s a törvények isteneként állnia kellene a szavát. A kiutat jelentő megoldást Loge, a furfangos tűzisten találja meg. Azt tanácsolja Wotannak, hogy Freia helyett ajánlja fel az óriásoknak azt a varázsgyűrűt, amelyet Alberich a Rajna kincséből kovácsolt. Loge és Wotan elutazik Nibelheimba, a nibelungok világába, hogy megszerezze a kincset. Az óriások elfogadják a csereajánlatot, de Freiát túszként maguknál tartják. Nélküle és az általa kínált étkek, az aranyalmák nélkül az istenekre halál vár.

Az alvilágban. A csodagyűrű és a láthatatlanná tevő ködsisak birtokában Alberich a neki alávetett nibelungokat kínozza, közülük is leginkább Mimét, a saját fivérét.

Logénak csellel sikerül eloroznia tőle a kincset, a sisakot és a gyűrűt. Alberich mindenkit megátkoz, aki a gyűrűt valaha is birtokolni fogja.

Az istenek birodalmában. Freiát immár kiválthatják az óriások fogságából. Wotan a gyűrűt meg akarja tartani, Erda, a női főistenség azonban óva inti ettől. Szavai hatására Wotan megérti, hogy az istenek elpusztulnak, ha ő nem adja át a gyűrűt, ezért végül megválik tőle, annak átka pedig azonnal hatni kezd. Az érte folytatott veszekedésben Fafner megöli fivérét, Fasoltot. Az istenek bevonulnak a Walhallának nevezett várba. Kísérőjük két holló, Wotan madarai, amelyek a világ eseményeiről visznek híreket a főistennek. Loge kárörvendőn figyeli a pusztulásra ítélt isteneket. Csak a rajnai sellők maradnak hátra, akik az elveszett aranyat siratják.

Első nap – A walkür A földi világban. Siegmund, a wälsung – Wotan földi nőtől született, halandó fia – éppen ellensége, Hunding házában talál menedéket, akivel másnap fegyvertelenül kellene meg­vívnia. Hunding felesége, Sieglinde és Siegmund szerelemre gyullad egymás iránt, mielőtt még felismernék, hogy ők ketten ikertestvérek. Sieglinde megszerzi Siegmundnak a notungot, a legyőzhetetlen kardot. A testvérek elmenekülnek. Úgy tűnik, Wotannak sikerül az a terve, hogy egy félelmet nem ismerő hősi nemzetség révén jó irányba fordítsa a világtörténelem menetét.

Föld és ég között. Fricka, a házasság védőistensége rábírja Wotant, hogy áldozza fel a házasságtörők életét. Wotannak a lányát, a walkür Brünnhildét arra kell kényszerítenie, hogy vonja meg a védelmét Siegmundtól. Miután azonban a szerelméhez hű Siegmund nemet mond arra, hogy magát a sorsának alávetve Brünnhildével a Walhallába menjen, Brünnhilde nem teljesíti apja parancsát. Wotan haragjában eltöri a notungot. A védtelen Siegmundot megöli Hunding, őt pedig ezután Wotan döfi le. Brünnhilde elmenekül Sieglindével, aki gyermeket hord a szíve alatt.

Föld és ég között. A walkürök, Wotan és Erda kilenc lánya a világot járja, összeszedi az elesett hősöket és a Walhallába viszi őket, hogy ők alkossák Wotan titkos seregét a hataloméhes Alberich elleni, fenyegetően közeledő harcban. Brünnhilde nem Siegmunddal ér­kezik meg a walkürökhöz, ahogyan ők várják, hanem az állapotos Sieglindével menekül hozzájuk, nyomukban az őket üldöző Wotannal. Sieglindét sikerül biztonságba helyezni, s Wotan haragja és büntetése Brünnhildére sújt le, noha az valójában csak az ő titkos kívánságát teljesítette. Halhatatlanságától megfosztva Brünnhilde védtelen nővé lesz.

Loge ismét tűzzé változik, és lángtengerrel veszi körül Brünnhildét, Wotan pedig mély álmot bocsát rá. Csak azé a félelmet nem ismerő hős férfié lehet majd, aki képes lesz arra, hogy a tűzön áthatolva felébressze és meghódítsa őt.

Második nap – Siegfried A földi világban. Mime, a nibelung kovács felnevelte Siegfriedet, a wälsung testvérpár, Siegmund és Sieglinde elárvult gyermekét, s az összetört notung darabjait is ő őrzi. Gondoskodása azonban nem önzetlen. Számára Siegfried, a félelmet nem ismerő ifjú hős és a legyőzhetetlen kard egyaránt csupán eszközül szolgál arra, hogy megszerezze az óriás Fafner által őrzött gyűrűt és általa a világ feletti uralmat. Egy vándor – akiben Wotant ismerjük fel – szántszándékkal felszítja Mime kapzsi vágyait, és arra kényszeríti, hogy a saját fejére kössön fogadást vele. Siegfried, aki ráun nevelőapja hiábavaló kísérleteire, maga kovácsolja újjá a notungot. Mime titokban mérgezett italt készít az ifjú számára.

Másutt. A kincseket sárkánnyá változtatva őrző Fafnert kilesi a nibelung Alberich, aki

vissza szeretné szerezni azt, ami egykor az övé volt: a csodagyűrűt és a láthatatlanná tevő ködsisakot. Itt is megjelenik a vándor alakját öltött Wotan, aki letette az uralkodás gondját, és a világtörténelem folyását látszólag részvétlenül szemléli. Mime elvezeti Siegfriedet Fafner barlangjához, és az ifjú ott gond nélkül megöli a sárkányt. Vére az ujjára fröccsen, s miután nyelvével hozzáér, megérti az erdei madár dalát. Tanácsát megfogadva magához veszi a gyűrűt és a ködsisakot. Alberich egyelőre hoppon marad. Siegfried most már Mimén is átlát, és ledöfi az áruló törpét. Az erdei madár ekkor megmutatja neki az utat, amely elvezeti nevenincs vágyakozása tárgyához: az asszonyhoz, Brünnhildéhez.

Föld és ég között. Wotan még egyszer utoljára kikéri Erda tanácsát, az ősanya tudása azonban kevésnek bizonyul a közelgő világvégével szemben. Wotan maga is megtapasz­tal­hatja Siegfried, az egykor épp általa hőn várt, félelmet és törvényt nem ismerő hős hatal­mát. Az ifjú, dacolva a valaha leghatalmasabb istenség ellenkezésével, utat tör magá­nak az apja által száműzött walkürhöz, Brünnhildéhez. Megtöri a rábocsátott varázst, ő maga pedig két új érzést is megtapasztal: a félelmet és a szerelmet.

Harmadik nap – Az istenek alkonya Föld és ég között. A nornák, Erda lányai, már nem látják a jövőt. A világfakőris darabokra törve várja a világégés eljövetelét. A sors fonalai menthetetlenül összegabalyodtak.

A földi világban. Brünnhilde útjára engedi szerelmét, Siegfriedet, hogy az újabb hőstetteket vihessen végbe. A hős eljut a Rajna-parti Gibichung-várba, amelyben Gunther és testvére, Gutrune mellett ott van féltestvérük, Hagen, Alberich ivadéka, aki Grimhildtől született. A Siegfriedtől a gyűrűt megkaparintani akaró apja Hagent eszközül használja, ám Siegfried a gyűrűt szerelmi zálogul Brünnhildénél hagyta.

Hagen ezért intrikus tervet dolgoz ki. Siegfriedet feledést hozó itallal kell megitatni, hogy aztán Gunther alakját magára öltve elhozza Brünnhildét, jutalomképpen pedig feleségül vegye Gutrunét. A walkür­sziklán Waltraute megpróbálja rábeszélni a testvérét arra, hogy adja vissza az elátkozott gyűrűt a rajnai sellőknek, és ezzel vegye elejét a szerencsétlenségnek. Férje szerelmi zálogától azonban Brünnhilde nem hajlandó megválni. Elrablása és elárultatása végbemegy, pontosan úgy, ahogyan azt Hagen eltervezte.

A földi világban. Alberich engedelmességet követel fiától, Hagentől, aki Guntherékben gyűlöletet és gyanakvást ébreszt a diadalmasan visszatérő Siegfried iránt. Az elárult Brünnhilde is bosszúra szomjazik. Siegfried anélkül, hogy tudná, mit tesz, nőül veszi Gutrunét.

Más helyeken. A Gibichungok elhatározzák, hogy vadászatukon Siegfriednek meg kell halnia. A rajnai sellők könyörögnek a vadászat közben hozzájuk tévedt Siegfriednek, hogy adja nekik a gyűrűt, ám ő kineveti őket. Később, amikor megpihen a férfiakkal, lassanként visszatér az emlékezete, ám Hagen ekkor hátába döfi a dárdáját. Brünnhilde megérti, mi történt, és átlát az árulókon. Teljesíti utolsó kötelességét – Siegfried holttestét elnyelik a világégés első lángjai. Brünnhilde is a tűzbe veti magát. Az istenek és az emberek birodalma megsemmisül. A Rajna kilép medréből.

Az átok sújtotta gyűrű visszatér eredeti helyére.

Wagner látomása a katasztrófáról és a megbékélésről „A dolgok eredete a Határtalan. Amikből keletkeznek a dolgok, azokba történik a pusztulásuk is, szükségszerűen; mert büntetést és jóvátételt fizetnek egymásnak jogtalankodásaikért az Idő elrendelése szerint.”

„Sejted, miként lesz?” – így hangzik a nornák panaszos éneke Az istenek alkonya elején, a vég kezdetén. A jövő többé nem ismerhető meg, ami lesz, nem megsejthető. Az óriások, akik egykor a föld urai voltak, nincsenek többé, Alberich kóborol a világban, hogy visszaszerezze a gyűrűt, az uralom zálogát, az istenek kétségbeesetten várják pusztulásukat, ami oly régóta foglalja le a legfőbb isten, Wotan gondolatait. A föld a miénk, embereké.

A Rajna kincse a bűnbeesésről szól, amely a legfőbb nibelunghoz, Alberichhez kötődik. Ő rabolta el a kincset, megtagadván a szerelmet, s kikovácsolta a hatalmat jelentő gyűrűt. Wotan pedig az égi béke érdekében felépítteti Walhalla várát. De ő, aki egykor a szerződéseken őrködött, teljesíthetetlen ígéretet tett a vár építőinek, az óriás testvérpárnak, Fafnernek és Fasoltnak, és munkájukat csak Alberich elátkozott kincsével tudta megfizetni. Megtörtént a testvérgyilkosság. A hatalom, a hazugság és az irigység a világ részévé vált.

A walkür a sikertelen mentési kísérletek drámája. A földön háború dúl. Wotan összehívja a hősöket a Walhalla csarnokába, hogy megindítsa a végső harcot Alberich ellen.

Az ősistennővel, Erdával a harcos nők nemzedékét, a walküröket nemzi, egy földi as�szonnyal pedig a wälsung testvérpárt, Siegmundot és Sieglindét, a testvérszerelemben fogant hős, Siegfried szüleit. A házasságtörés azonban Wotan isteni hitvesének, a tűzhely őrzőjének felháborodását hívta ki.

Wotannak meg kellett hajolnia a törvények előtt, és magukra kellett hagynia azokat, akiket a legjobban szeretett. Titkos akaratát A walkür Brünnhilde hajtja végre, amikor megmenti Sieglindét, de ezért kegyetlen büntetéssel sújtja őt Wotan. Önként mond le a hatalomról, és várja a világ pusztulását vagy megmenekülését, amely utóbbihoz, mint tudja már, ő nem járulhat hozzá. Csak a szabad, önálló, önmagáért felelős ember akadályozhatja meg a katasztrófát. Siegmund és Sieglinde fia: Siegfried. Az isteni világot csak ő válthatja meg.

Richard Wagner Ringje a forradalom története, és miként az általa ismert valamennyi forradalom (1789, 1848), az ő forradalma is dermedtségben, árulásban, vérben végződik.

Wagner Ringje a visszatérés története: az arany, amihez hatalom kötődik, s amely egyaránt megrontja az isteni és emberi világot, visszatér a Rajna védelmező vizébe.

Esélyt kínálva ezzel a túlélők számára.

„…a bajt hozó hatalom, a szerelem valódi mérge, a természettől elorzott és meggyalázott aranyban…”

Wagner Ringje a modernitás története. Ami az öröklött erkölcsi és vallási értékektől való megszabadulással kezdődött. Röviden: a felvilágosodással. Siegfried, a Wotan által olyannyira várt hős mentes ezektől az értékektől. Afféle Rambo, aki nem ismeri a félelmet, aki játéknak tekinti a háborút, akinek a gyilkolás a célja. Az újkor Herkulesének nagyszabású rendrakása végén azonban ott a katasztrófa és a pusztulás, amelyet nem ő okozott, s amelyet megakadályozni sem képes. És ott van saját halála is a történet végén. Hogy miképpen történhetett volna mindez másként, arról senki nem mesélt neki.

„Hogy csak emléke maradjon, ki akarom törölni minden nyomát a dolgok eme őrült rendjének, amely erőszakból, hazugságból, gondból, képmutatásból, ínségből, nyomorúságból, szenvedésből, könnyekből, csalásból és bűnözésből van összeszőve…”

És a Ring egyben szerelmi történet, pontosabban a Szerelmi Történet. A ­walkür Brünnhilde vétkes félistenből halandó nővé válik Siegfried által, szerelme pedig Siegfriedet, a kegyetlen ifjút férfivá avatja. A profán „énekek éneke jelleg”, ami a mű r­ eményteli olvasatát nyújtja, az egoizmus és az árulás világai között megbújó háborí­tatlan fénysugárként jelentkezik.

Siegfried nagyjából a mesékben előforduló fiatal legénynek felel meg, aki elindul otthonról, hogy megtanulja a „félelmet” – ám ez soha nem fog sikerülni neki, mivel

a természetben működő ész által mindent olyannak lát, amilyen. Legyőzi a sárkányt, és megöli nevelőjét, a törpét, aki titokban el akarja tenni őt láb alól a kincs miatt. „Siegfried, aki magányából kitörni vágyik, megérti az erdei madár dalát – e képességét a véletlenül megkóstolt sárkányvérből nyerte –, s a madár elvezeti a tűzzel körülvett sziklaszirten alvó Brünnhildéhez. Siegfried áthatol a tűzön, és felkelti Brünnhildét – a nőt, akivel a legcsodálatosabb szerelmi ölelésben egyesül… És még valami: hevesebb beszélgetéseinkben szóba került már – nem vagyunk azok, amivé lehetnénk, vagy lennünk kellene, amíg fel nem ébresztettük a Nőt.” (Richard Wagner levele August Röckelhez, 1851. augusztus 24.) Így fejeződik be a Siegfried hőstörténete; de mennyire másképp alkonyul be az isteni világnak a Ring harmadik estéjén. Az állhatatlan vándor, akivé Wotan változott, örök álomra kárhoztatta Erdát, az egykor oly dolgos nornák megélik, ahogyan a pusztulásra vágyó isten a világfakőrist tűzifává aprítja, a sors fonala, amellyel a nornák a világ történéseinek szőnyegét szövik, menthetetlenül összekuszálódik.

Siegfried, aki nemrég lett Brünnhilde hitvese, újabb hősi tettekre kél. De képtelen lévén a szabadságra, a gyenge jellemű Gunther és Gutrune, vagyis a Gibichungok nemzetségének csapdájába esik. A rettenthetetlen hős gyámoltalanná válik a terméketlenek közegében.

Ami ezután következik: kábulat, árulás, intrika, gyilkosság. Maga az istenek alkonya. És itt a pusztulást szemlélő emberek számára is bealkonyul. Mert Wagnert nem az istenek érdeklik, ő arról beszél, ami – Georg Büchner forradalmi drámáját idézve – „bennünk hazudik, gyilkol és lop”. Őt az érdekli, miért képtelen az ember a társadalmi boldogságra, miért hiúsulnak meg a forradalmak és az utópiák – és a remény.

Alkalmatlanok lennénk tehát mi, emberek, a szabadságra és a boldogságra? Megérjük vajon végül, amire az őselemek, a tűz, a víz, a föld, az ég mutatnak rá, az új reményt? Wagner műve nem kínál megoldást, hanem működésbe hozza a sors körforgását. A gyűrű visszatér a helyére, ahonnan egykor arany formájában lopta el a szerelemről le­mondó nibelung, Alberich. A gyűrű pedig önmagába zárul. A kezdet összeér a véggel. Ahogy a nagy görög természetfilozófus fogalmazott két és fél évezreddel ezelőtt: „Az emberek azért pusztulnak el, mert nem képesek a kezdetet a véghez kapcsolni.” (Krotóni Alkmaion, Kr. e. 500 k.)

A legfőbb hősnőt Brünnhildének hívják, fenntartás nélküli vallomásával a szerelem iránt, amennyiben a világvégét a világégés „kacagó lángjai” között „szent nászként” használja ki.

Egy korábbi, nem felhasznált szövegváltozatban, amely a zeneszerző-költő számára annyira kedves volt, hogy – amikor már túl volt a komponáláson – a végleges szöveghez hozzáillesztette, Brünnhilde lett a Közvetítő, a Megvilágosult, a Látó. Wagner megalkotta számunkra – mielőtt örökkévaló éjszaka borította volna be földünket – a világ cselekvő tudását: a nőt.

Korábbi évadok Ring-előadásainak kritikáiból Az ötletgazdák szerényen Budapesti Wagner-napok 2008 névvel illették nagy­ szabású­vállalkozásukat, mely idén arra volt hivatott, hogy a tavalyi fél ciklust négyestés egésszé forrassza össze. Egy svájci idegenvezető messzebb ment. A walkür első szüne­tében a táblácskájánál uzsonnára gyülekező csoportjának ezt írta: Wagner-Festtage („Wagner-ünnep”).

(Molnár Szabolcs, Magyar Narancs) Az operajátszás ma problematikus. A hagyományos utóvédharca mellett a „Wille zur Neuheit” dominál. Éppen egy kiváló Ring-rendezést intézett el egy német kritikus azzal: nem vitte igazán tovább a mű értelmezését. Az „újra törő akarat” számára nem létezik a „Werktreue”, a műhöz való hűség, ami egykor lehetővé tette a konszenzuális műértést, s hogy a szolid szakszerűség elegendő legyen egy opera adekvát interpretációjához, továbbá kritikailag fel lehessen mérni a szakszerűséget, illetve a művészi értéktöbbletet: „anything goes”. A darabok nyersanyagként kezelése dezilluzionálja a nagyközönséget kedves operáival kapcsolatban, az értőbbek és a kritikusok számára pedig végtelenül megnehezíti, hitkérdéssé teszi az értékelést, a blöff és az újszerű, lényegi interpretáció megkülönböztetését. […] A nibelung gyűrűje első két darabjának előadása olyan interpretációt jelentett be, mely az említett német kritikus normája szerint nem viszi ugyan tovább a mű értelmezését, hanem éppen azt demonstrálja, hogy meg lehet szabadulni a „továbbvivés” görcsétől, a „Werktreue”, a műhöz való hűség igenis létezik és érvényes, s a koncert és az önértékű színjáték között lehet találni hozzá olyan vizuális formát, mely korszerű, művészi és szolgálja, nem pedig használja a művet.”

(Fodor Géza, Élet és Irodalom) A külföldön díszletterveivel nevet szerzett fiatal rendező, Hartmut Schörghofer […] magabiztosan tartja kézben az indaszerűen szerteágazó cselekményt. Figyelemre és elisme­résre méltó, hogy nem enged a csábításnak, és mindvégig azonos, látványban és hatáselemekben egyaránt szigorú gazdaságossággal megkomponált, mégsem szegényes regiszterben szólaltatja meg Wagnert. A rendező meglehetős szerénységről téve tanúbizonyságot olyan utat választott, amelyen kizárólag a zenéé, nem pedig saját ötleteié a főszerep.”

Ugyan ki gondolta volna néhány éve, hogy Budapesten a világ bármely operaházával versenyképes színvonalú Wagner-előadások fognak születni? Valószínűleg egyedül Fischer Ádám. A szcenika modernitása többek közt a párhuzamos effektusok alkalmazásában ­rejlik. Korunk vizualitása – nagyrészt az internetnek köszönhetően – egyre inkább szakít a lineáris gondolkodásmóddal, és a komputeres felületek szinkron h ­ atásmechanizmusára épít. Veszélyes játék, nagyon kell ügyelni az arányokra, nehogy a színpadról lezúduló információ­dömping agyonnyomja a darabot. A budapesti produkció – érzésem szerint – sikerrel kerüli el ezt a csapdát. Hagyja érvényesülni a zenét, és szimbolikájával segíti a történet befogadását. Márpedig ez a legnemesebb cél, amit rendező kitűzhet.

(Rockenbauer Zoltán, Heti Válasz) Van egy igazi hősünk a történetben [Christian Franz Loge szerepében]. Egyébként köpcös, ingét kilógatva hordó figura, de úgy énekel, olyan természetességgel, úgy válik a játék az éneklés részévé, vagy fordítva, az éneklés a játék részévé, ahogy azt Wagnernél el sem tudja képzelni a bizalmatlan néző.

A júniusi Wagner-ünneppel, amely eleve a tradícióteremtés szándékával indult tavaly, vissza­vonhatatlanul begyűrűzött (hogy stílszerű legyek) a korszerű operajátszás, a világszínvonal Magyarországra. Jellemző, hogy az áttörés helyszíne nem az Operaház, hanem egy koncertterem. De ezek után nem lehet, és amint a hatalmas siker mutatta, nem is nagyon érdemes többé ugyanúgy játszani az erre szakosodott színházakban sem, mint eddig.

Az egész Wagner-ünnep motorja Fischer Ádám. De hogy művészi értelemben is men�nyire az, csak akkor derül ki, ha az ember végignézi az előadásokat. Ahogyan estéről estére, óráról órára fáradhatatlanul sugározza maga köré a zenei energiát pusztán a mozdulatok erejével, az páratlan és ámulatba ejtő. Nincs egyetlen lyuk sem ebben az energiaáramlásban, nincs pillanatnyi tempó-megingás, fáradás.

Azt hiszem, egyik legerőteljesebb élményem volt ez, amit valaha énekestől színpadon hallottam. Feltehetően a rendező és Christian Franz közös érdeme, hogy ennyire hangsúlyos figurává vált Loge. Felsejlett benne az európai művészet egyik toposza, a Mefisztó–Lucifer karakter. Loge, a „fényhozó”. Izgalmas ötlet. És Christian Franz a következő estén egészen mást tudott elénk állítani, Siegmundként már nem csavaros eszű háttérfigura, hanem elesett ember volt.

De egyben gyöngéd, érzelmekkel elárasztott alak is, aki, ha úgy fordul, képes hőssé emelkedni. Ez együttérzést, ­igazi érzelmi reakciót vált ki a nézőből, mégpedig Christian Franz jóvoltából igen intenzívet. Az adottság áldása és a profizmus csúcsa egyszerre, ahogy Christian Franz tökéletes hangi diszpozícióban tudott maradni, végig bírta erővel és kifejezőkészséggel.

Hundingot a világhírű Wagner-basszus, Walter Fink énekelte, s ha meg sem mozdul (nem is nagyon kellett megtennie), akkor is övé az egyik legemlékezetesebb megjelenés, és persze hang az egész produkcióban. Hihetetlen, borzongást keltő basszus.

Hundingja óhatat­lanul nagyszabású figurává válik, nagyobb kaliber, mintha csak egyszerű faragatlan gazember lenne.

Hartmut Welker mint Alberich a legrémületesebb alak, hangszíne, arckifejezése a totálisan kegyetlen lényt jeleníti meg, olyan, mint az érzelem nélkül gyilkoló krokodil. Ez a jeges reménytelenség mégis emberi tragédiát takar, a végtelen, az igazi magány rettenete sugárzik mögüle.

Alkotók, szereplők BAKOS Kornélia 1999-ben szerzett magánének-tanári és ének-kamara­ művészi diplomát. Részt vett több operakurzuson, s 2002-ben különdíjjal ismerték el a spanyolországi Murciában megrendezett Geszty Szilvia Koloratúra-versenyen. 2006-ban elnyerte a Wagner Társaság bayreuthi ösztöndíját. 2003 és 2006 között a Magyar Állami Operaház stúdiósa volt.

A Magyar Kamaraoperával is rendszeresen dolgozik.

BARÁTH Emőke a Zeneakadémián Pászthy Júlia növendékeként diplomá­ zott 2012-ben. Számos mesterkurzuson vett részt, s 2011-ben elnyerte a Verbier Fesztivál mesterkurzusának nagydíját. Olyan neves dirigensekkel dolgozott már, mint Alan Curtis, Fischer Ádám és Takács-Nagy Gábor, s fellépett többek közt Aix-en-Provence-ban, a Theater an der Wienben, a Théâtre des Champs-Elysées-ben, a versailles-i Opéra Royalban és az amszterdami Concertgebouw-ban. Junior Prima-díjas művész.

Sorin COLIBAN Bukarestben született, és az ottani zenekadémián tanult.

Nemzetközi karrierje a Ruggero Raimondi által rendezett Don Giovannival indult Athénban. Repertoárjában helyet kapnak Verdi, Donizetti, Rossini nagy basszusszerepei (Fülöp király, Fiesco, Raimondo, Mózes, Don Magnifico), a Carmen Escamillója, A varázsfuvola Sarastrója, valamint A bolygó hollandi címszerepe és a Tannhäuser Őrgrófja. 2009 óta a bécsi Staatsoper tagja, s fellépett már többek közt a londoni Covent Gardenben, a párizsi Opéra Bastille-ban, a San Franciscó-i, a tel-avivi és a bázeli operaházban, valamint az amszterdami Concertgebouw-ban.

Corinna CROME a Salzburgi Mozarteumban tanult, majd a Bajor Állami Színházban működött asszisztensként. Később dolgozott többek közt Wilfried Minks mellett, Philip Tiedemann-nal és Michael Simonnal. A Bajor Állami Színházban díszletet tervezett Az árnyékvonal című előadáshoz, ugyanott A manhattani Jóisten című darab, a hamburgi Altona Színházban pedig az Amphytrion díszlet- és jelmeztervezője volt. Jelmeztervezőként vett részt az eisenstadti Haydn Fesztivál keretében az Aki hűtlen, pórul jár című opera színpadra állításában, valamint az Erfurti Opera Ruszalka-produkciójában.

Ladislav ELGR a prágai Előadó-művészeti Akadémián szerzett diplomát. A 2013/14-es évadban a Helsinki Fesztiválon adott nagy sikerű koncertje utat nyitott számára a párizsi Opéra Bastille színpadára, majd a drezdai Semperoper, a berlini Deutsche Oper és további rangos dalszínházak, CD- és DVD-felvételek következtek. A cseh tenor repertoárja elsősorban a 19. század végének és a 20. század elejének operairodalmából építkezik, s fontos szerep jut benne a szláv szerzőknek (Csajkovszkij, Glinka, Janáček), de Brittennek, Webernnek és Wagnernek is. 2009 óta a Budapesti Wagner-napokon többször is sikerrel alakította A Rajna kincse Froh szerepét.

Walter FINK 1991 óta a bécsi Staatsoper tagja, ahol napjainkig mintegy hetven szerepet formált meg, köztük Sarastrót, Ozmint, Basiliót (A sevillai borbély), Roccót (Fidelio), Kaspart (A bűvös vadász), Varlaamot (Borisz Godunov), Henrik királyt (Lohengrin), Veit Pognert (A nürnbergi mesterdalnokok), Titurelt (Parsifal), Dalandot (A bolygó hollandi) és Fafnert (Siegfried). A rangos osztrák operaház 2001-ben „Kammersänger” címmel ismerte el. Vendégszerepelt többek közt a Bregenzi Fesztiválon, Berlinben, Lyonban, Toulouse-ban, Mannheimban és Düsseldorfban. Átütő erejű Hunding- és Fafner-alakításai a Budapesti Wagner-napokon is nagy sikert arattak.

FISCHER Ádám a Budapesti Wagner-napok művészeti koncepciójának megalkotója és a rendezvény állandó karmestere. Budapesten zeneszerzést, majd Bécsben vezénylést tanult. Fellépett a világ vezető opera­házai­ban, és vezényelte a legnevesebb szimfonikus zenekarokat.

1987-ben megalapította az Osztrák–Magyar Haydn Zenekart, amelynek mindmáig művészeti vezetője, a következő évadtól pedig tiszteletbeli karmestere lesz. Lemezei közül Goldmark: Sába királynője (Hungaroton) és Bartók: A kékszakállú herceg vára (CBS/Sony) nagydíjat nyert. A nibelung gyűrűjét nagy sikerrel vezényelte a bécsi Staatsoperben is. Bayreuthban 2001-ben debütált: az előadásokon nyújtott művészi teljesítményét az Opernwelt nevű szakmai folyóirat „Az év karmestere” címmel ismerte el.

FODOR Beatrix Pászthy Júlia növendékeként diplomázott a budapesti Zeneakadémián, majd Grazban és Bécsben képezte tovább magát.

2002-ben a Salzburgi Mozarteum 8. Nemzetközi Mozart Versenyén második, a Prága–Bécs–Budapest Nyári Akadémia versenyén pedig első díjat nyert. Számos koncertfellépése mellett elsősorban Mozartoperaszerepeket formál meg: nagy sikert aratott a Don Giovanni Donna Annájaként, majd a Figaro házasságában és A varázsfuvolában, de Richard Strauss Elektrájában is fellépett már.

FODOR Bernadett a bécsi Zeneakadémián Gabriele Lechner növendéke­ ként diplomázott, jelenlegi mentora Sass Sylvia. Több magyarországi énekverseny dobogós helyezettje, valamint Kodály- és Schubertkülöndíjasa. 2010-ben elnyerte a fiatal operaénekesek számára odaítélt Birgit Nilsson Emlékdíjat, s ugyanabban az évben meghívást kapott a Frankfurti Opera Walkürjébe: először Schwertleite, majd Rossweise szerepét formálta meg. A Rajna kincse Erdájaként rangos osztrák zenés színházi díjra jelölték. A Magyar Állami Operaházban 2015 őszén debütált.

FODOR Gabriella még főiskolásként mutatkozott be Britten A csavar fordul egyet című operájának Miss Jessel szerepében a Magyar Állami Operaházban, amelynek jelenleg magánénekese. A budapesti Zeneakadémia opera tanszakán 2004-ben fejezte be tanulmányait, s még abban az évben elénekelte a Budapesti Őszi Fesztiválon Lendvay Kamilló A tisztességtudó utcalány című operájának címszerepét. Repertoárján a barokktól a kortárs zenéig dalok és oratóriumok is szerepelnek. A Budapesti Wagner-napok állandó szereplője.

Christian FRANZ Wuppertalban énekelt először a Parsifalban és a Lohengrinben, s Wagner-repertoárját Kasselben Loge, Siegmund és mindkét Siegfried szerepével bővítette. Daniel Barenboim számos szerepre szerződtette Berlinbe, ott, valamint Bécsben, Kölnben és Tokióban is 2001 óta énekli A nibelung gyűrűje valamennyi tenorszerepét. A Siegfriedben és Az istenek alkonyában Bayreuthban és a New York-i Metropolitan Operában is fellépett, s volt Trisztán, Loge és Parsifal is. A Budapesti Wagner-napok állandó résztvevője: a Parsifal címszerepe után a Müpában is elénekelte a Ring tenorszerepeit, és Trisztánként ugyancsak diadalt aratott.

Christian Martin FUCHS (1952–2008) író és dramaturg szülővárosában, Bécsben, valamint Salzburgban élt. Legutolsó munkái között említhető az Oben Ohne TV-sorozat (ORF, 2006–2008), illetve több operalibrettó: A. Scartazzini: Wut (Erfurti Opera, 2006), A. Schreier: Kein Ort. Nirgends (Mainzi Állami Színház, 2006), T. D. Schlee: Hiob (Karintiai Nyár Fesztivál, Ossiach, 2007), M. Trojahn: La Grande Magia (drezdai Semperoper, 2008).

Könyveit az ausztriai Residenz Verlag jelentette meg, tagja volt az Osztrák PEN Klub elnökségének, valamint vendégelőadója a Bécsi Egyetem Színházés Médiatudományi Intézetének.

GÁL Erika a Magyar Állami Operaház tagja, a Komlóssy-díj b ­ irtokosa­.

2002-ben az Erkel Színházban a Parasztbecsület Lola szerepében debütált, és ugyanabban az évben a Wagner Társaság ösztöndíjasa volt Bayreuthban.

Visszatérő vendég a Miskolci Nemzetközi Operafesztiválon és a Bukaresti Operafesztiválon, továbbá vendégszerepelt Finnországban, Olaszországban, Németországban, Ausztriában, Japánban és Thaiföldön is. Flosshilde, Erda és az Első norna szerepében rendszeresen fellép a Budapesti Wagner-napokon.

Andreas GRÜTER Luzernben született, és Münchenben, a Bajor Színház­ művészeti Akadémián tanult fénytervezést. Számos prózai és zenés színpadi mű fénytervezőjeként aratott elismerést különböző német, francia, svájci, holland és osztrák társulatoknál, s dolgozott a Bayreuthi Ünnepi Játékokon is, a Katharina Wagner által rendezett A nürnbergi mesterdalnokokprodukcióban. 2010 decembere óta a kölni operaház világosítói részlegének vezetője. A Budapesti Wagner-napokon 2007-ben mutatkozott be.

Oskar HILLEBRANDT a Budapesti Wagner-napok visszatérő v­ endége.

A „Kammersänger” címmel elismert baritont a Württembergi Staats­ operben abszolvált első fellépése óta rendszeresen meghívják Európa vezető dalszínházaiba, de gyakran fellép tengeren túli opera- és koncertszínpadokon is (Buenos Aires, Tokió, Új-Zéland, Kanada, Cleveland, New York). A legrangosabb nemzetközi fesztiválok, Bayreuth, Glyndebourne, Bregenz állandó közreműködője. Legnagyobb sikereit éppen Wagner-alakí­tásaival, Telramund, Alberich, Klingsor, Wotan és Kurwenal megformálásával aratja.

Momme HINRICHS és TORGE MØLLER videoművészek a berlini Technische Universität díszlettervezési tanszékének docensei. A rende­ zőkkel szorosan együttműködve elsősorban arra törekszenek, hogy a ­videót más médiumokkal összekapcsolva összművészeti alkotást hozzanak létre. Nem elégszenek meg a médiumok puszta egymás mellé helyezésével, a színpadi terek dekorálásával, hanem több művészi szintet olvasztanak egybe.

KÁLNAY Zsófia a Szegedi Egyetem Zeneművészeti Karán Temesi Mária növendékeként nyerte meg a Simándy József Énekversenyt, s ez után nem sokkal már a Szegedi Nemzeti Színházban kapott szólistafeladatot. Az énekverseny különdíjasaként Richard Strauss A hallgatag asszony című, Kocsis Zoltán által vezényelt operájában léphetett fel a Müpában, és több rangos oratórium- és operafelkérést is kapott. A Budapesti Wagnernapokon a fiatal mezzoszoprán korábban Flosshilde és Rossweise szerepét énekelte.

Michaela KAUNE szülővárosa, Hamburg zeneakadémiáján szerzett diplomát. Repertoárja legfontosabb elemei a Richard Strauss- és Wagneroperák hősnői. Énekelt a Salzburgi és a Bayreuthi Ünnepi Játékokon, ez utóbbin 2007 és 2011 között alakította A nürnbergi mesterdalnokok Éváját.

Fellépett többek közt a firenzei Maggio Musicalén, a Carnegie Hallban, vala­mint Drezda, München, Párizs, Bécs, Brüsszel és Tokió operaházaiban, s olyan karmesterekkel dolgozott, mint Zubin Metha, Christoph Eschenbach, Christian Thielemann, Krzysztof Penderecki, Dennis Russell Davies és Esa-Pekka Salonen.

KOVÁCS Annamária a budapesti Zeneakadémián előbb koncerténekesi, majd operaénekesi diplomát szerzett. A Magyar Állami Operaház tagja, ahol az altrepertoár számos szerepét elénekelte már. Több európai országban vendégszerepelt, és Japánban is sokszor fellépett a Carmen címszerepében. Az operaszínpadokon olyan partnerei voltak, mint Agnes Baltsa, Renato Bruson, Jevgenyij Nyesztyerenko és Ramón Vargas. Koncerténekesi repertoárja Bachtól napjainkig terjed.

Petra LANG nagy sikerrel alakította Brünnhilde szerepét koncertszerű előadásokon Berlinben, Bambergben, Stuttgartban és Luzernben, valamint párizsi és budapesti színpadokon, s Dieter Dorn lelkesen ünnepelt Ringjében Genfben is. Eleinte lírai mezzoszopránként tartották számon, majd olyan drámai szop­rán­­szerepek keresett megformálója lett, mint Wagner Ortrudja, Kundryja, Vénusza, Sieglindéje és Brangänéje, Richard Strauss Ariadnéja, Bartók Juditja és Berg Marie-ja. Rendszeresen szerepel a legjelentősebb európai és amerikai operaházakban. Cassandra-interpretációját (Berlioz: A trójaiak) két Grammy-díjjal ismerték el. Világszerte ad dalesteket és tart mesterkurzusokat.

Waltraud MEIER Würzburgban született, és az ottani operaházban debütált a Parasztbecsület Lolájaként. Később Mannheim, Dortmund, Hannover és Stuttgart dalszínházában tett szert gazdag repertoárra. Nemzetközi karrierje a Buenos Aires-i Teatro Colónban indult A walkür Fricka szerepével. 1983-ban a Bayreuthi Ünnepi Játékokon a Parsifal Kundryjaként a­ ratott diadalt. Rendszeresen fellép többek közt a londoni Covent Gardenben, a milánói Scalában és a New York-i Metropolitan Operában. Kundryként, Izoldaként, Ortrudként és Sieglindeként napjaink egyik legjelentősebb Wagnerénesnőjeként tartják számon.

NÉMETH Judit a Magyar Állami Operaház magánénekese és a győri Széchenyi Egyetem Zenei Fakultásának adjunktusa. 2000-ig elsősorban koncerténekesként tartották számon itthon és a világ számos országában. 2000–2007-ig Bayreuthban a Lohengrinben, a Tannhäuserben és a Parsifalban énekelt, de fellépett már többek közt a milánói Scalában, a drezdai Semperoperben és a berlini Deutsche Operben is. A Liszt-díjas, Érdemes művész a Budapesti Wagner-napokon Kundryt, Frickát, Brangänét és a Második nornát alakította már óriási sikerrel.

PASZTIRCSÁK Polina énekesi teljesítményét a Simándy József Ének­ver­ senyen első helyezéssel, a Genfi Nemzetközi Énekversenyen első díjjal, valamint közönségdíjjal és három különdíjjal, a müncheni ARD Zenei Versenyen pedig különdíjjal ismerték el. Európa-szerte szerepel opera­házak­­ban és koncert­termekben, Woglindét a Budapesti Wagner-napokon kívül a Genfi Nagyszínház Ring-produkciójában is énekelte. Richard Strauss, Sosztakovics, Bartók és Kodály dalaival portréalbuma is megjelent.

Birgit REMMERT Braunschweigban született, a detmoldi Zeneművészeti Főiskolán szerzett diplomát, és 1992-ben debütált a zürichi operaház együttesében. Számos stílust magában foglaló repertoárja a b ­ arokktól Wagnerig, Richard Straussig és egészen napjainkig terjed. 2000-ben és 2001-ben a Bayreuthi Ünnepi Játékokon Frickát énekelte (másodszor Plácido Domingo p ­ artnereként), a drezdai Semperoper Ringjében pedig ugyancsak Frickaként, valamint Erdaként és Waltrauteként lépett színpadra. Számos CD- és DVD-felvételt készített világhírű zenekarokkal és neves karmesterekkel együttműködve.

Teresa ROTEMBERG balettiskoláit Argentínában és Franciaországban v­ égezte. 1­ 999-ben Zürichben megalapította Company Mafalda nevű saját táncegyüttesét. 2006-ban színházi rendezőként is bemutatkozott a Münsteri Városi Színházban. 2006-ban a Company Mafalda Svájc legnagyobb, „Steps#10” elnevezésű táncfesztiváljával együttműködésben valósíthatta meg Trans­­­Formations című produkcióját. Szintén 2006-ban a Company Mafalda a SOLUTIONS last count-down előadással teljessé tette azt a trilógiát, amely a TransFormations mellett az INCIDENTS frei nach Charms című tánc­ színházi előadást tartalmazza.

Kurt RYDL százhúsznál is több szerepet formált már meg operaszínpadokon. Repertoárján, amely Wagner műveinek valamennyi basszusszerepét tartalmazza, a Verdi- és Richard Strauss-operák is jelentős helyet foglalnak el. 1976 óta a bécsi Staatsoper tagja, ahol 1986-ban megkapta a kitüntető „Kammersänger” címet. A világ minden jelentős operaházában fellépett már, s visszatérő vendég a Salzburgi, Bayreuthi, Veronai, Edinburghi és Bregenzi Ünnepi Játékokon. A Budapesti Wagner-napokon 2010-ben Hagent énekelte.

Koncerténekesként Mozarttól Pendereckiig, Beethoventől Mahlerig számos kompozíció szerepel műsorán.

Jürgen SACHER 1991 óta a hamburgi Staatsoper tagja, amelynek Ringprodukciójában egyaránt színpadra lépett Loge és Mime szerepében. Énekelte Dávidot (A nürnbergi mesterdalnokok) a Kormányost (A bolygó hollandi) és Walther von der Vogelweidét (Tannhäuser).

Wagner-szerepei mellett Puccini- és Richard Strauss-operákban is bemutatkozott. Vendégszerepelt többek közt a berlini Staatsoperben, a Theater an der Wienben, a milánói Scalában, a Salzburgi Ünnepi Játékokon, valamint Brüsszelben, Barcelonában, Koppenhágában, Braunschweigban és Budapesten.

Hartmut SCHÖRGHOFER Linzben belsőépítészet, a Salzburgi Mozarteum Egyetemen pedig díszlettervezést tanult. Lyontól Drezdáig és MonteCarlótól Stockholmig elsősorban díszlettervezőként tett szert nemzetközi hírnévre. Több Mozart-operához is tervezett díszletet: Az álruhás kertészlány (Tiroli Tartományi Színház és Darmstadti Állami Színház), Don Giovanni (Schwerini Állami Színház), Szöktetés a szerájból (Aacheni Színház és Dortmundi Opera). Munkái Bécsben, Drezdában, Grazban, Ulmban, Salzburgban, Karlsruhéban, Strasbourgban és Erfurtban is nagy sikert arattak. A Lipcsei Operaházba, a Hallei Városi Színházba és a Braunschweigi Állami Színházba is rendszeresen visszatér.

Egils SILINS számos versenygyőzelem után rangos európai operaházak – köztük a bécsi Staatsoper és a berlini Deutsche Oper – tagjaként tette ismerté nevét. Ő az első lett énekes, aki vendégszerepelt a milánói Scalában (1998) és a New York-i Metropolitan Operában (2000), s ez jeles fesztiválokra szóló meghívásokhoz is segítette. Stílusát az arisztokratikus diszkréció és nobilitás jellemzi, miközben mély szenvedéllyel alakítja a romantikus szerepeket és finom humorérzékkel árnyalja a vígoperai figurákat. Dalénekesként szívesen tűzi műsorára a német és orosz romantika alkotásait, s repertoárja oratorikus műveket is tartalmaz.

Rebekka STANZEL a drezdai Semperoperben kezdte pályafutását rendező­asszisztensként, majd Barcelonában, a Gran Teatre del Liceu és a nürnbergi Staatstheater munkatársa lett, ahol több gyermek- és kamaraoperát is rendezett. Számos nemzetközi hírű rendezővel dolgozott együtt, többek közt Willy Deckerrel, Konstanze Lauterbachhal, Andreas Baeslerrel és Robert Lehmeierrel. Rendezett a Müpában, valamint olyan rangos színházakban, mint a barcelonai Gran Teatre del Liceu, a drezdai Semperoper és a madridi Királyi Operaház.

SZABÓKI Tünde Budapesten, majd Grazban folytatta énekesi tanulmányait. 1994 és 2000 között több nemzetközi énekversenyen nyert díjat.

Grazban és Prágában mintegy húsz alkalommal énekelte Ágota szerepét Weber A bűvös vadász című operájában. Rendszeres vendége a Nikolaus Harnoncourt nevével fémjelzett ausztriai Styriarte Fesztiválnak. 1997-ben a jeruzsálemi Bernstein Fesztivál szólistája volt, 2001-ben Berlinben, a Salzburgi Ünnepi Játékokon és a Luzerni Fesztiválon is szerepelt.

A Budapesti Wagner-napok állandó résztvevője, 2011-ben Lisztés Artisjus-díjjal ismerték el.

Iréne THEORIN a koppenhágai Királyi Opera tagjaként a Don Giovanni Donna Anna szerepében debütált 2005-ben. Ugyanazon év decemberében és 2006 tavaszán mindhárom Brünnhilde-szerepet elénekelte a koppenhágai Ringben. Első amerikai fellépésén 2009-ben ugyancsak Brünnhildét formálta meg Washingtonban, majd a New York-i Metropolitan Operában is. A barcelonai Gran Teatre del Liceu 2014-es Ring-színrevitelében szintén Brünnhilde volt. Többek közt olyan jeles karmesterekkel dolgozott, mint Daniel Barenboim, Bertrand de Billy, Myung-Whun Chung, Christoph Eschenbach, Fischer Ádám, Valerij Gergijev, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Seiji Osawa, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Giuseppe Sinopoli és Franz Welser-Möst.

VÁRHELYI Éva 1996-ban énekművész-tanári, majd 1998-ban Bende Zsolt, Gulyás Dénes és Kovalik Balázs növendékeként operaénekesi diplomát szerzett a Zeneakadémián. Tudását többek közt Hamari Júlia, Polgár László és Helmuth Rilling mesterkurzusain fejlesztette tovább. Nemzetközi versenyek díjazottja, a Magyar Állami Operaház szólistája. A Budapesti Wagnernapokon már többször fellépett A walkür Siegrunéjént.

VIDA Gábor 2007-ben vette át diplomáját a budapesti Színház- és Film­ művészeti Egyetemen. Közreműködött a budapesti Nemzeti Színház, a Szegedi Nemzeti Színház, a komarnói Jókai Színház, a budapesti József Attila Színház, az egri Gárdonyi Géza Színház, a debreceni Csokonai Színház és a nyíregyházi Móricz Zsigmond Színház produkcióiban. Sikert aratott Styx című önálló koreográfiája, és táncosként is elismert művész.

Stefan VINKE a kölni zeneakadémián diplomázott. 2000-ben az Opern­welt nemzetközi operamagazintól kiérdemelte „Az év legjobb fiatal opera­ énekese” címet. A következő években fokozatosan építette ki repertoárját, amely számos Wagner-szerepet is tartalmaz. Énekelte a Trisztán és Izolda, a Parsifal és a Lohengrin címszerepét, valamint Siegmundot, Eriket, Siegfriedet és Stolzingi Waltert. Bemutatkozott a legrangosabb német operaházakban, valamint a Covent Gardenben, a milánói Scalában, a Salzburgi Húsvéti Ünnepi Játékokon, a Bayreuthi Ünnepi Játékokon, és Peking, Madrid, Párizs, Philadelphia, Seattle dalszínházában.

Hartmut WELKER Aachenben kezdte pályafutását, s nem sokkal később már a világ legrangosabb operaházaiban lépett fel. A milanói Scalában alakította a Lohengrin Telramundját, a Parsifal Klingsorját és a Siegfried Alberichjét. Első amerikai szereplésén, Chicagóban Claudio Abbado vezényletével mutatkozott be, a New York-i Metropolitanben pedig a Fidelióban lépett színpadra. Bayreuthban 2000-ben debütált, és azóta az Ünnepi Játékok állandó szereplője. 2002-ben Drezdában alakította először Alberich szerepét, amelyet évekig a bayreuthi Ring-ciklusban is megformált. A Budapesti Wagner-napok visszatérő vendége.

WIERDL Eszter a Magyar Állami Operaház magánénekese. Diplomáját Andor Éva és Kovalik Balázs tanítványaként a budapesti Zeneakadémián szerezte, s Gundula Janowitz, Ileana Cotrubas, Hamari Júlia, Polgár László és Helmuth Rilling mesterkurzusain képezte tovább magát. A klasszikus repertoár mellett a 20. századi és a kortárs operairodalom ritkábban hallható műveit is szívesen énekli. Évek óta fellép a Budapesti Wagner-napokon.

Martin WINKLER Walter Berry növendéke volt a bécsi Zeneakadémián.

2009 óta a bécsi Volksoper tagja. A Bayreuthi Ünnepi Játékokon Alberichként debütált 2013-ban. Sikeres Wagner-szerepei közé tartozik a Parsifal Klingsorja is. Az utóbbi években sikerrel alakított főbb szerepeket több Richard Strauss-, Berg-, Zemlinsky-, Ligeti- és Sosztakovics-operában, de otthonosan mozog Csajkovszkij, Donizetti, Puccini és Weber világában is.

Fellépett többek közt a Theater an der Wienben, a berlini Komische Operben, Lyon, Stuttgart és Nürnberg operaházában, a londoni Covent Gardenben és a New York-i Metropolitan Operában.

WITTINGER Gertrúd a budapesti Zeneakadémián és a bécsi Zene­ művészeti Főiskolán tanult. 1999-ben Olaszországban, a tarantói Rolando Nicolosi Énekversenyen elnyerte az első díjat. Szerepelt már Bécsben – a Volksoperben és a Staatsoperben –, valamint Debrecenben és a Magyar Állami Operaházban is. 2007-ben versenygyőzelemmel nyerte el a Budapesti Wagner Társaság ösztöndíját. A Budapesti Wagner-napok rendszeres fellépője.

A Magyar Rádió Szimfonikus Zenekara Dohnányi Ernő kezdeményezésére alakult meg 1943-ban, s azóta nemzetközi rangot és tekintélyt szerzett bel- és külföldi hangversenyeivel, lemezeivel és rádiófelvételeivel. Az együttes négy kontinens több mint ötven országában öregbítette már a magyar zenekultúra jó hírnevét. Kiegyenlített hangzását, hajlékonyságát, valamint azt a mecénási tevékenységet, amelyet a magyar kortárs zene népszerűsítésével és rögzítésével végez, egyöntetűen méltatják a világ vezető kritikusai, a vendégkarmesterek és a zenekarral dolgozó szólisták, zeneszerzők. A Budapesti Wagner-napokon a kezdetektől közreműködik az együttes, és itt is komoly sikereket aratott. Vezető karmesteri tisztét 2014 szeptembere óta Kovács János tölti be.

A Magyar Rádió Énekkara 1950-ben alakult, vezető karnagya jelenleg Pad Zoltán. Az együttes repertoárja felöleli a klasszikus kórusmuzsika minden területét, beleértve az opera- és oratóriumirodalmat is. Előadásain kortárs magyar szerzők darabjai is rendszeresen szerepelnek.

A kórus rangos nemzetközi fesztiválok gyakori meghívottja, fellépett már Salzburgban és Bécsben is az Ünnepi Játékokon. Az együttest többek közt olyan híres vendégkarmesterek vezényelték, mint Lamberto Gardelli, Lovro von Matačić, Kurt Masur, Yehudi Menuhin, Giuseppe Patané, Helmuth Rilling és Jurij Szimonov.

A Budapesti Stúdió Kórus 1996-ban jött létre amatőr énekesekkel, a Liszt-díjas Strausz Kálmán vezetésével, aki tizenhat évig volt a Magyar Rádió Énekkarának vezető karnagya.

Magyarország első professzionális projektkórusában az énekesek egy-egy produkcióra állnak össze, ez lehetőséget teremt a karnagy számára a mindenkori ideális hangzás kialakítására.

Az énekkar összetétele és létszáma minden esetben az előadandó mű, valamint a projekt igényei szerint alakul.

ADAM FISCHER A dream became reality This year the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival will again perform the entire Ring Cycle on four consecutive days – in the way Wagner originally intended. For the artists and performers this presents an enormous challenge coupled with a massive artistic responsibility. We have to try and convince everybody that our Wagner Festival can measure up to the best Wagner productions world wide. I don’t mean to challenge the uniqueness of Bayreuth! But we do hope that we can pave the way for alternative performance styles to Bayreuth. We are artists: we must attempt the seemingly impossible and reach for the stars! We had this dream, and this dream is now a reality.

It is such a rare occurrence that one is able to realise such a grand and obsessional dream.

This always requires another obsessed individual, someone who truly believes in the artist ’s vision (like Ludwig II, who believed in Wagner) and who is prepared to finance the whole thing! The Müpa first gave us this confidence and support some years ago. This support and our reverence for Wagner’s work obligates us to prove to our sponsors, supporters and our audience that we are worthy of this continued commitment.

I can not imagine a more exciting and intense music than Wagner’s Ring Cycle. Every single bar of the over fifteen hours of music is like a drug which pulls the hearer into its spell. The same goes for the artist. When I conduct the Ring, I never come out of it feeling tired or exhausted; in the contrary: at the end, I want to start again from the beginning! However, I am well aware that the conditions of a performance have to be optimal so that no one is overstrained by the experience. I personally had my own fairly horrible experience of this: I first heard a live broadcast from Bayreuth when I was about eight or nine years old. In the 1950s these live broadcasts represented the only cultural connection to the West, and accordingly they were revered in my family in an almost religious way. It was a nightmare. I suffered through having to sit still for hours and my enthusiasm for Wagner today almost surprises me when I remember how excruciating my first exposure to him was.

For this reason I want to help young people today – those young people who have never heard Wagner’s music, and who grew up in an age of internet and music videos – to come to Wagner’s music in an enjoyable and enriching way. Wagner’s music speaks to them, it speaks directly to them, and we must find a medium through which they can discover the magic of this music for themselves. I know that it often only takes one resounding musical experience to discover music for oneself: anyone who has come

under the spell of a particular piece of music, will never come out of it again.

We want to create opera performances that make sure no one ever feels bored: for boredom is the biggest enemy of the theatre. In our interpretation of the Ring Cycle we want to extend the illusion of realism, we want to find new forms, perspectives, modern associations. It may seem bold for me to state this, but we want to create a form of opera performance for the future. Theatre must always adapt and grow.

In the course of its 3000 year old history, theatre always adapted to the times and culture it developed in.

A work has timeless relevance, it speaks to all generations, but we must find contemporary ways to translate what it says. The kind of translation must always adapt and change. We aim to combine different theatre traditions in our Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival. We are a festival and we have to work with several casts, just like a repertory opera house. We also have to preserve the unity of the whole work, and the unity of our artistic vision. That is our priority. To achieve this, we combine different elements: puppets, shadow play, film and dance theatre, and the singers do not always play their traditional roles. The unity of role and performer is sometimes deliberately broken. I look at our artistic solutions as a kind of experiment. Every year we want to expand and improve our interpretations using the experiences we make from past performances. Our production uses modern as well as traditional means: we think that this is the best way to present Wagner’s courageous vision and his modern relevance.

Der Ring des Nibelungen Content Preliminary Evening – Das Rheingold On Earth. The light-hearted play of the Rhine-maidens is interrupted by the Nibelung Alberich. Instead of joining in their frivolous games, he steals the gold that they are guarding. In doing so, he renounces love.

The Kingdom of the Gods. In order to maintain peace with his wife Fricka, Wotan has enlisted the giants Fafner and Fasolt to build a fortress for her. In return, he has promised them Freia, Fricka’s sister. As guardian of agreements and promises, Wotan must remain true to his word. Loge, the demigod of fire, suggests a compromise: Alberich is said to have forged a powerful ring out of the Rhine gold.

Loge and Wotan travel down to Nibelheim, the world of the Nibelungs to retrieve the treasure, whilst the giants keep Freia hostage. Without Freia, and her golden apples, the gods’ power quickly diminishes.

The Underworld. Alberich uses his Ring and the “Tarnhelm” (a magical helmet which makes those who wear it invisible) to torment the other Nibelungs, especially his brother Mime. Using his cunning, Loge manages to steal the gold, the Tarnhelm and the ring from Alberich. Alberich places a powerful curse on the bearer of the Ring.

The World of the Gods. Freia is released. Erda, the Earth goddess, warns Wotan not to keep the ring. Wotan realises that the world of the Gods would go under if he were to keep it and so he hands the ring to the giants. And the curse of the ring starts working immediately: Fafner slays his brother Fasolt. The Gods retreat into their fortress, Valhalla. Two ravens, who inform Wotan of what is happening in the world, are his companions. Loge laughs at the imminent downfall of the Gods.

The Rhinemaidens are left behind, mourning the loss of the gold.

First Day – Die Walküre On Earth. Siegmund, the Wälsung, mortal son of Wotan, finds shelter in the house of his enemy, Hunding. The following day he is challenged to a duel and he has no weapon. Siegmund recognises Hunding’s wife Sieglinde as his sister. They fall madly in love. She gives him Notung, a powerful and invincible sword. Brother and sister flee together. Wotan’s scheme, to save the world through a hero who does not know fear, seems to be working.

Between Earth and the Heavens. Fricka, guardian of marriages, forces Wotan to sacrifice the lives of the two adulterers. He must command his daughter Brünnhilde to release Siegmund from her protection. When Siegmund refuses to follow his fate and accompany Brünnhilde to Valhalla, she ignores her father’s command. Wotan destroys the sword Notung. Hunding slays the unarmed Siegmund and is killed by Wotan.

Brünnhilde flees with Sieglinde, who is carrying a child.

Between Earth and the Heavens. The Valkyries are the nine daughters of Wotan and Erda. They travel through the world, bringing fallen heroes to Valhalla. They are Wotan’s secret army in his fight against the power-hungry Alberich. Instead of arriving with Siegmund, as the Valkyries expected, Brünnhilde arrives with the pregnant Sieglinde, closely followed by Wotan. Sieglinde is taken to safety. Wotan directs his wrath at Brünnhilde; the daughter who obeyed his secret order. He strips her of her immortality, and turns her into a helpless woman. Wotan then surrounds her with Loge’s fire, where she will remain asleep, until a hero arrives; a hero capable of waking her and winning her heart. The hero, who does not know fear.

Second Day – Siegfried On Earth. The blacksmith Mime has raised the orphaned Siegfried, son of the Wälsung siblings Siegmund and Sieglinde. The Nibelung also harbours the broken pieces of the sword Notung. Yet he did not raise the orphan out of a sense of duty and kindness: Both Siegfried, the young hero who knows no fear, and the sword Notung are a means for Mime to seize the ring that is now being guarded by Fafner and to gain world domination. A wanderer – we recognise him to be Wotan – stirs the Nibelung’s greed, and challenges him to a battle of wits, in which Mime forfeits his head. Siegfried, tired of his foster father, wields the sword himself. Mime arms himself with a poisonous potion.

In a different place. Fafner, transformed into a dragon, guards the treasure, the ring and the Tarnhelm, the magical helmet. He is observed closely by Alberich, who is wanting to reclaim his treasure. The Wanderer is also there; having renounced power he is now seemingly impassively observing world events as they unfold. Mime leads Siegfried to Fafner’s cavern, and Siegfried easily slays the dragon. Fafner’s blood causes Siegfried to understand a Wood Bird, and following its advice, he takes the ring and Tarnhelm for himself. Alberich is left empty-handed. Siegfried also now understands Mime’s betrayal and slays the dwarf. The Wood Bird shows Siegfried the way to the source of his – as yet undefined – longing: to a woman, Brünnhilde.

Between Earth and the Heavens. One last time, the Wanderer turns to the ancient Mother Erda for advice. However, her knowledge fails her in the light of the imminent end of the world. The Wanderer now hears of the power of the fearless and lawless hero Siegfried. The latter is on his way to the banished Brünnhilde, against the wishes of the once so powerful God Wotan. Siegfried releases Brünnhilde from her spell, and comes to feel two things: fear and love.

Third Day – Götterdämmerung Between Earth and the Heavens. The Norns, Erda’s daughters, are no longer able to predict the future. The World Tree has been chopped to timber, awaiting the Great Fire. The ropes of destiny have become irreversibly intertwined.

On Earth. Brünnhilde bids leave to Siegfried, who is on his way to new heroic adventures. He finds himself in the company of the Gibichungs at the Rhine, the siblings Gunther and Gutrune, and their half brother Hagen, son of Alberich and their mother Grimhild. Hagen is Alberich’s tool in getting at Siegfried’s ring. However the ring remained with Brünnhilde as a token of Siegfried’s fidelity. So Hagen develops a plan: Siegfried is to drink a potion that makes him forget everything, then rob Brünnhilde for Gunther. As a reward, Gutrune shall become Siegfried’s wife.

Meanwhile, the Valkyrie Waltraute tries in vain to convince Brünnhilde to return the cursed ring to the Rhine maidens, and thus to prevent disaster. The robbery and betrayal of Brünnhilde all happen according to Hagen’s plan.

On Earth. Alberich demands that his son Hagen swear allegiance to him. Hagen fuels hate and suspicion in Gunther against the triumphant Siegfried. The betrayed Brünnhilde also seeks revenge. The unknowing hero is wed to Gutrune.

In different places. Siegfried is taken on the Gibichung’s hunting trip in a ploy to kill him. The Rhine-maidens beg Siegfried to return the ring, but he laughs them off. In the company of the men, his memory slowly returns. Hagen quickly slays Siegfried. Brünnhilde realises the extent of the treacherous plot, and fulfils her final obligations to him: Siegfried’s body is burnt in the first flames of the World Fire.

Then Brünnhilde too gives herself up to the fire, which destroys the world of mortals and gods alike.

The Rhine rises over its banks and the cursed gold is returned to its original place.

Wagner’s vision of catastrophe and reconciliation

“Whence things have their origin, thence also their destruction happens, according to necessity; for they give to each other justice and recompense for their injustice in conformity with the ordinance of Time.”

“Weißt du, wie das wird?” (Do you know what will happen?) is the lamenting question of one of the norns at the beginning of the Götterdämmerung, which is also the beginning of the end. But the future can not be known. So what happened? The giants, once masters of the earth, are no more and Alberich wanders around the world, desperately trying to reclaim his ring. The Gods are paralysed, awaiting the final downfall, that Wotan already longs for. The earth belongs to the race of the humans, to us.

Rheingold was the original sin. The Nibelung Alberich’s lust for power possessed him to rob the treasure, to recount love and to forge that all-mighty ring. Wotan, everything but a father-god, had the fortress Valhalla built in order to maintain heavenly peace.

Yet, as guardian of contracts, and having promised the giants Fafner and Fasolt an impossible renumeration for their work, he eventually is forced to hand over Alberich’s treasure: which now carries Alberich’s curse. One brother kills the other. From this point on, power, dishonesty and mistrust rule the world.

Die Walküre is about failed rescue attempts. The world is ravaged by war. Wotan assembles his heroes in Valhalla’s halls for the final battle against Alberich. The ancient goddess Erda conceives Wotan’s daughters, the amazonian valkyries. Wotan also fathers the Wälsung lovers Siegmund and Sieglinde with a mortal woman; they become the sibling parents of the hero Siegfried. Wotans godly wife, Fricka, guardian of the hearth, condemns them as adulterers.

Wotan must obey the law and sacrifice his beloved son. The Valkyrie Brünnhilde however, follows his secret wish, then saves Sieglinde, and is punished severely for this by Wotan.

Wotan renounces power and awaits the end of the world, knowing that there is nothing he can do now to save it. Only a free man – one whose sole responsibility is for himself – can now avert the catastrophe, Wotan says, almost literally. This man is Siegmund’s and Sieglinde’s son: Siegfried. The world of the Gods is now replaced by that of heroes, i.e. humans.

Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle is a story of revolution, and, like the revolutions Wagner witnessed (1789 and 1848), this one also ends in deadlock, betrayal and blood.

Wagner’s Ring Cycle is also a story of return: the gold, and the power that derives from it, corrupting gods and mortals alike, is returned to the protective waters of the Rhine. There is hope for the survivors.

Wagner’s Ring Cycle is also the story of modern times, beginning with the rejection of old moral and religious values, i.e. with the enlightenment. Siegfried, Wotan’s long awaited hero, possesses none of the old values. He is a rambo-like character, someone who does not know fear, for whom fighting is a game, and killing the aim. After this new-age Heracles is done with his “clean up” escapades, however, there follows the catastrophe, the downfall, which even Siegfried could not have prevented. His own death inevitably follows as well. No one had ever told him how it could have been otherwise.

„Down to its memory I will destroy each trace of this mad state of things, compact of violence, lies, care, hypocrisy, want, sorrow, suffering, tears, trickery, and crime...

And the Ring Cycle is also a – no, it is the love story. Siegfried transforms Brünnhilde from banished demi-goddess into a woman, and her love for him transforms Siegfried from cruel boy into a man. This non-biblical hymn to love represents the hope in this work, the undestroyable shimmer of light shining through a world of egoism and betrayal.

Siegfried is now more or less the same youth occurring in the legend, who sets off to learn “how to fear” – which he will never succeed in doing, because with his strong natural senses he always sees everything as it is. He slays the giant worm and strikes dead his guardian, the dwarf – who secretly wants to kill him for the treasure. “Siegfried, longingly desiring out of his loneliness, now harks – he has acquired this gift through the incidental taste of the dragon’s blood – the voice of the Wood Bird, who refers him to Brünnhilde, sleeping on a rock, surrounded by fire. Siegfried penetrates the fire and awakens Brünnhilde – the woman, to a rapturous lover’s embrace.... Just one more thing – in our fiery conversations we alluded to this already –: we can no more be that which we can and must be, until – the woman is not awakened.” (Richard Wagner’s letter to August Röckel, 24th of August 1851) This is how the second day – the hero’s tale Siegfried – ends, and how different is the dawn on that third and final day! It is a twilight that engulfs not just the Gods. Erda is put to eternal sleep by Wotan, the wanderer. The formerly so wise norns witness a God becoming obsessed with the demise of the world and transforming the world tree into firewood. The ropes of destiny, with which the women wove the tapestry of the world, have become irreversibly entangled and intertwined. Siegfried, now Brünnhilde’s husband, sets off for new adventures. However, incapable of freedom, he gets entangled in the characterless Gibichung-Clan of Gunther and Gutrune. A fearless man, helpless amongst the fruitless! What follows is intoxication, betrayal, intrigue and murder.

Are we humans incapable of at tainting freedom and happiness? Is there perhaps some hope in the Finale, where we are returned to the basic four elements of fire, water, earth and sky? Wagner’s work does not offer us a path; it closes a fateful circle.

The ring returns to the very place where its gold was originally taken by Alberich when he renounced love. The ring closes itself. The beginning and the end merge. As a great Greek physician and philosopher once said, just about 2500 years ago: “Human beings perish because they are not able to join their beginning to their end.” (Alcmaeon of Croton, around 500 B.C.) The ultimate hero of the Ring Cycle is Brünnhilde, with her unreserved avowal of love, and her transforming the end of the world into an almost “holy marriage” in “the laughing blaze”. In an earlier version, which Wagner – although he did not set it to music – nevertheless included in the final text version, Brünnhilde is the proclaimer, the allknowing, the seer: Before the final night falls, Wagner delivers – and let this be the end of this text also – the active knowledge of the world to the woman.

The blessed end of all things eternal, do you know how I attained it? grieving love’s profoundest suffering opened my eyes for me: I saw the world end.

Reviews of Ring productions in recent seasons The masterminds of “Wagner in Budapest” were modest in choosing such an understated name for their ambitious project back in 2008, and the event surpassed even itself this year by turning last year’s half-cycle into a four-evening whole.

A Swiss guide went further. During the first interval in the Valkyries, he wrote on a board for the benefit of his group gathering for refreshments: Wagner-Festtage (“Wagner Festival”).

(Szabolcs Molnár, Magyar Narancs) Performing opera nowadays is tricky. The dominating trend aside from the traditional rear guard action is to create new interpretations (“Wille zur Neuheit”). A recent fantastic staging of the Ring Cycle was dismissed by a German critic because it did not really do anything to add new interpretations to the piece. For those who want to create something new at all costs, so-called “Werktreue” (i.e. fidelity to the composer’s intentions) no longer counts. Nowadays, anything goes. Approaching an opera as raw material can disillusion audiences who no longer recognise their much loved operas, whilst it makes the work of critics and scholars very difficult. [...] It becomes difficult to separate what is merely a bluff from meaningful modern productions. The Budapest performances of the first two operas of the Ring Cycle, on the other hand, represented two performances that may not have necessarily brought new interpretations to the work, but demonstrated that we can let go of this dogma of having to modernise at all costs. It proved that ”Werktreue” does have its place, and a very important one at that, and that there exists a happy medium between purely concert performance and self indulgent performance practise. A happy medium that is modern, relevant, artistic – and serves, not just uses, the work.”

(Géza Fodor, Élet és Irodalom) Hartmut Schörghofer, who made a name for himself abroad as a set designer, has a sure hand over the production. He remains loyal in pictures and plot to Wagner.

In his production Wagner’s music dominates, not his own ideas. it may seem strange to highlight these points, but we have seen enough evidence to the contrary on opera stages. Here, it is as if the director were observing happenings from afar, placing his trust into the explanatory nature of Wagner’s music.

Who would have dared to think a few years ago that in Budapest we would have performances of Wagner’s operas capable of matching any opera house worldwide?

Maybe only Adam Fischer.

The modern style of the performance lay in the use of parallel effects – the visuals of today serve to break with linear thinking. Using supporting visuals is a dangerous game, and one must be very careful not to overkill a work with such effects. But in my view, this Budapest production succeeded in avoiding this trap. It allowed the music to speak for itself, used its symbolism to come to an understanding of the story. Which is the most noble goal that any director could set for him or herself.

He is a somewhat stocky character, with his shirt permanently untucked, but he sings with such a natural sound, and his singing becomes acting so naturally – or is it his acting that drives the singing – in a way that Wagner audience would not have deemed possible.”

With the ”Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival”, modern opera performance at a world class level has been irreversibly brought to Hungary. It is representative that this breakthrough did not occur in the opera house, but in a concert hall.

But after this event – and its fantastic success underlines this – it isn’t really worth continuing the performance style of the traditional theatres.

The motor behind the whole Wagner Festival is Adam Fischer. The extent of his driving force only becomes obvious when one watches the performances. The way that he radiates musical energy purely through his movements, hour after hour, is unequalled and awe inspiring. There is no holding back this energy flux, no single tempo lurch, or signs of tiredness.

Of all performances that I have ever seen on stage I think this one left the strongest impressions on me. It is due to the staging and the singer Christian Franz that Loge was transformed into such a strong character. One of the great European characters emerged here in the form of a Mephisto-Lucifer. Loge, the flame-bearer. It is an exciting idea.

And Christian Franz stepped on stage the next day in a completely different character: as Siegmund, he was no longer a clever background character, but a broken man. At the same time he was a kind and gentle person, capable of being a hero, when circumstances cause him to act as one. He brought about empathy and real emotional reactions from the audience, made all the more intense by Christian Franz’ performance. Thanks to favourable circumstance and his extensive professionalism, Christian Franz’ voice remained absolutely perfect throughout: he managed to sing the whole piece with strength and expression.

The part of Hunding was sung by the world famous Wagner bass, Walter Fink, and even though he did not move (he didn’t really have to), his scenes were one of the most memorable and his voice too of course – in the whole production. He has an unbelievable, shiver inducing bass. His Hunding was a larger than life figure, a character with far more calibre than just your simple “baddie”.

Hartmut Welker as Alberich was one of the most frightening characters. The colour of his voice, his facial expressions showed a completely cruel being, a cold-blooded crocodile. This icy and hopeless character, however, still contains a human tragedy, behind the cold exterior there lies terrible and never ending loneliness.

Cast, creatives Kornélia BAKOS received her diploma in solo voice pedagogy and chamber singing in 1999, participating in several opera courses. In 2002, she won a special prize at the Sylvia Geszty International Coloratura Singing Contest in Murcia, Spain. In 2006, she earned a scholarship to study in Bayreuth from the Wagner Society. Between 2003 and 2006, she was a member of the Hungarian State Opera Studio. She also works regularly with the Hungarian Chamber Opera.

Emőke BARÁTH graduated from the Liszt Academy of Music as a student of Júlia Pászthy in 2012. She participated in a number of master classes, and won the Verbier Festival’s master class grand prize in 2011.

She has worked with such notable conductors as Alan Curtis, Adam Fischer and Gábor Takács-Nagy, performing in Aix-en-Provence, the Theater an der Wien, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, the Opéra Royal in Versailles and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, among others. She has also won the Junior Prima prize.

Sorin Coliban was born in Bucharest and studied at the music academy there. His international career began in Athens with a performance of Don Giovanni directed by Ruggero Raimondi. His repertoire includes the bass roles from the works of Verdi, Donizetti and Rossini (King Philip, Fiesco, Raimondo, Moses and Don Magnifico). He has also performed as Escamillo in Carmen, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, the title role in Der fliegende Holländer, as well as singing Hermann in Tannhäuser. Coliban has been a member of the Wiener Staatsoper since 2009, and has taken the stage at London’s Covent Garden, Paris’s Opéra Bastille, the opera houses of San Francisco, Tel Aviv and Basel, as well as Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, among other venues.

Corinna CROME studied costume and stage design at Salzburg’s Mozarteum before working as an assistant at the Bavarian State Theatre.

She subsequently collaborated with Wilfried Minks, Philip Tiedemann and Michael Simon, among others. At the Bavarian State Theatre she designed the sets for a performance of The Shadow Line and was also the set and costume designer for Der gute Gott von Manhattan (again in Bavaria) and Amphytrion at the Hamburg Altona Theatre. She also participated as a costume designer at the Eisenstadt Haydn Festival for a performance of the opera L’infedeltà delusa and at the Theater Erfurt in a production of Rusalka.

Ladislav ELGR graduated from the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. His highly acclaimed performance at the Helsinki Festival during the 2013/14 season opened the way for him to take the stage at the Opéra Bastille in Paris, and then later at the Semperoper Dresden and Deutsche Oper Berlin, along with other esteemed opera houses, resulting in a number of CD and DVD recordings. The Czech tenor’s repertoire is built primarily around operas from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with an emphasis on Slavic composers (Tchaikovsky, Glinka and Janáček), although it also includes works by Britten, Weber and Wagner. Since 2009 he has performed Froh in Das Rheingold at the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival on multiple occasions, to great acclaim.

Walter FINK became a member of the Wiener Staatsoper in 1991, and has played some 70 roles there to date, including Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Osmin (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Rocco (Fidelio), Kaspar (Der Freischütz), Varlaam (Boris Godunov), King Heinrich (Lohengrin), Veit Pogner (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Titurel (Parsifal), Daland (Der fliegende Holländer) and Fafner (Siegfried). The eminent Austrian opera house recognised him with the title of Kammersänger in 2001. He has been a guest performer at the Bregenz Festival, in Berlin, Lyon, Toulouse, Mannheim and Düsseldorf. His overpowering portrayal of Hunding at the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival also met with great success.

Adam FISCHER is the creative force behind the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival and its permanent conductor. After studying composition in Budapest, he learned conducting in Vienna. He has taken the podium at the world’s leading opera houses and conducted the top symphony orchestras.

In 1987, he founded the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Philharmonic, whose artistic director he will remain until next season. He has also conducted the Ring at the Wiener Staatsoper to great acclaim. He made his debut at Bayreuth in 2001, and was named “Conductor of the Year” by the German periodical Opernwelt for his work at the festival.

Beatrix FODOR graduated from the Liszt Academy of Music as a student of Júlia Pászthy, continuing her studies in Graz and Vienna. In 2002, she placed second at the Salzburg Mozarteum’s 8th International Mozart Competition and first at the Prague–Vienna–Budapest Summer Academy competition. In addition to her many concert performances, she primarily sings roles from Mozart’s operas, receiving much acclaim as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni. She later sang in The Marriage of Figaro and in The Magic Flute and has also appeared in Richard Strauss’s Elektra.

Bernadett FODOR graduated from the University of Music in Vienna.

She has taken the winners’ podium after several Hungarian singing competitions and has also received the Kodály and Schubert prizes. In 2010, she won the Birgit Nilsson Memorial Award given to young opera singers and received an invitation to the Frankfurt Opera’s staging of Die Walküre later that same year, first performing as Schwertleite, and later as Rossweise.

She debuted at the Hungarian State Opera in the autumn of 2015.

Gabriella FODOR was still a student when she made her debut at the Hungarian State Opera — where she is currently a soloist — as Miss Jess in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw. She completed her studies at the opera faculty of the Liszt Academy of Music in 2004, and in that same year sang the title role in Kamilló Lendvay’s opera The Respectful Prostitute at the Budapest Autumn Festival. Her repertoire features songs and oratorios ranging from the Baroque period to the contemporary. She is a regular fixture at the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival.

Christian FRANZ debuted as Parsifal and Lohengrin in Wuppertal and later in Kassel expanded his Wagnerian repertoire to include Loge, Siegmund and both Siegfrieds. Daniel Barenboim contracted him to perform numerous roles in Berlin, where, as well as in Vienna, Toronto, Hamburg and Tokyo, he has sung all of the tenor roles in the Ring since 2001. In 2009, he performed in Siegfried and Götterdämmerung at both the Bayreuth Festival and New York’s Metropolitan Opera, and also sang Tristan, Loge and Parsifal.

A regular fixture at the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival, he first sang the title role of Parsifal here in Hungary, before going on to sing all the tenor parts in the Ring, and also winning great acclaim as Tristan.

Christian Martin FUCHS (1952–2008) was a writer and dramaturg who lived in Vienna, his city of birth, and Salzburg. His final works include the Oben Ohne television series (ORF, 2006–2008), as well as several librettos: A. Scartazzini: Wut (Theater Erfurt, 2006), A. Schreier: Kein Ort. Nirgends (Staatstheater Mainz, 2006), T. D. Schlee: Hiob (Carinthian Summer Music Festival, Ossiach, 2007), M. Trojahn: La Grande Magia (Semperoper Dresden, 2008). His books were published by Residenz Verlag in Austria, and he was a member of the Austrian PEN Klub’s presidency, as well as a guest lecturer at the University of Vienna’s Institute of Theatre, Film and Media Studies.

Erika GÁL is a member of the Hungarian State Opera and a winner of the Komlóssy Prize. She made her debut in 2002 at the Erkel Theatre as Lola in Cavalleria rusticana. In that same year, she studied in Bayreuth after winning a scholarship from the Wagner Society. She regularly appears at the Miskolc International Opera Festival, and has sung the title role of Carmen at the Bucharest Opera Festival. She has also been a guest performer in Finland, Italy, Germany, Austria, Japan and Thailand. She regularly performs as Flosshilde, Erda and the First Norn at the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival.

Andreas GRÜTER was born in Lucerne and studied lighting at the Bavarian Theatre Academy in Munich. He has made a name for himself as a lighting designer for plays and musical theatre productions with a variety of companies in Germany, France, Switzerland and Austria, and also worked on Katharina Wagner’s production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Bayreuth Festival. He made his debut at the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival in 2007.

Oskar HILLEBRANDT is a returning guest to the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival. Since first taking the stage at the Württemberg Staatsoper, the baritone, who has been awarded the title of Kammersänger, has been regularly invited to leading opera houses both in Europe and also further afield (Buenos Aires, Tokyo, New Zealand, Canada, Cleveland and New York). He is a regular collaborator at the most eminent international festivals at Bayreuth, Glyndenbourne and Bregenz.

His greatest successes have come from his portrayals of Wagnerian roles such as Telramund, Alberich, Klingsor, Wotan and Kurwenal.

Momme HINRICHS and Torge MØLLER are docents of the set design faculty at the Technical University of Berlin. The video artists’ primary objective is to work closely with directors to integrate video with other media and create multimedia total artworks. They are not satisfied with simply placing the various media alongside each other as some sort of decoration for the stage, but instead endeavour to meld multiple artistic layers together.

Zsófia KÁLNAY won the József Simándy Singing Competition as a student of Mária Temesi at the Music Faculty of the University of Szeged. Shortly afterwards, the mezzo-soprano joined the Szeged National Theatre as a soloist. As the winner of the special prize at the singing competition, she performed in the Richard Strauss opera Die schweigsame Frau conducted by Zoltán Kocsis at Müpa, and has since received several prestigious invitations to sing oratorios and opera pieces. She has previously performed the roles of Flosshilde and Rossweise at the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival.

Michaela KAUNE graduated from the music academy of her home-town of Hamburg. The most important elements of her repertoire are the heroines of Richard Strauss and Wagner’s operas. She has performed at the Salzburg and Bayreuth Festivals, singing the role of Eva in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg between 2007 and 2011. She has taken the stage at Florence’s Maggio Musicale, at Carnegie Hall, as well as at the opera houses of Dresden, Munich, Paris, Vienna, Brussels and Tokyo, collaborating with conductors such as Zubin Metha, Christoph Eschenbach, Christian Thielemann, Krzysztof Penderecki, Dennis Russell Davies and Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Annamária KOVÁCS earned a diploma in concert singing from the Liszt Academy of Music, followed by another in opera singing. She is a member of the Hungarian State Opera, where she has sung a number of alto repertoire roles. She has performed as a guest in many European countries, and has performed the title role of Carmen in Japan on numerous occasions. She has sung together with Agnes Baltsa, Renato Bruson, Yevgeny Nesterenko and Ramón Vargas. Her concert repertoire spans from Bach to the present day.

Petra LANG performed the role of Brünnhilde to great acclaim in concert performances in Berlin, Bamberg, Stuttgart and Lucerne, as well as in staged versions in Paris, Budapest and Geneva. Originally considered a lyrical mezzo-soprano, she later become a popular interpreter of soprano roles (Wagner’s Ortrud, Kundry, Venus, Sieglinde, Brangäne, Richard Strauss’s Ariadne, Bartók’s Judit, Berg’s Marie). Her interpretation of Cassandra (Berlioz: The Trojans) received two Grammy Awards. She also performs song recitals and teaches master classes worldwide.

Waltraud MEIER was born in Würzburg and debuted at that city’s opera house as Lola in Cavalleria rusticana. Her international career was launched in the Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires, where she played the role of Fricka in Die Walküre. Her performance of Kundry in Parsifal at the 1983 Bayreuth Festival was a huge success. She regularly takes the stage at London’s Covent Garden, Milan’s La Scala, and New York’s Metropolitan Opera, and is considered to be one of contemporary opera’s most significant Wagnerian signers in the roles of Kundry, Isolde and Ortrud.

Judit NÉMETH is a soloist of the Hungarian State Opera and an adjunct professor with the Music Faculty at Széchenyi University in Győr. Up until 2000, she was primarily considered a concert singer both in Hungary and abroad, but then appeared in Lohengrin, Tannhäuser and Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival from 2000–2007. She has sung at Milan’s La Scala, the Semperoper Dresden and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. The Liszt Prize-winner and Artist of Merit has sung Kundry, Fricka, Brangäne and the Second Norn at the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival, all with tremendous success.

Polina PASZTIRCSÁK has had her achievements as a singer recognised with a first place at the Simándy József Singing Competition, as well as with first place, the audience award and three special awards at the Geneva International Music Competition and a special award at the ARD Music Competition in Munich. She has performed in opera houses and concert halls across Europe, and in addition to singing Woglinde at the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival, she has sung in the Grand Théâtre de Genève’s production of the Ring.

Birgit REMMERT was born in Braunschweig, graduated from the academy of music in Detmold, and debuted in 1992 with the Zurich Opera. Her repertoire incorporates a number of styles from the Baroque period, through Wagner and Richard Strauss, and all the way up to the present. She sang Fricka in the Bayreuth Festival in 2000 and 2001 (the second time as Plácido Domingo’s partner), taking the stage as Fricka, Erda and Waltraute in the Semperoper Dresden’s performances of the Ring. She has recorded a number of CDs and DVDs with world-famous orchestras and renowned composers.

Teresa ROTEMBERG completed ballet school in Argentina and France.

In 1999, she formed her own dance company in Zurich called Company Mafalda. In 2006, Rotemberg made her debut as a theatre director at the Münster City Theatre. In 2006, Company Mafalda presented its production entitled TransFormations in collaboration with Steps#10, Switzerland’s largest dance festival. Also in 2006, the company completed its trilogy with SOLUTIONS last count-down, the other two works being TransFormations and the dance theatre play INCIDENTS frei nach Charms.

Kurt RYDL has performed over 120 roles on the opera stage. His repertoire, which contains all of the bass roles from Wagner’s works, also comprises operas by Verdi and Richard Strauss. Since 1976, he has been a member of the Wiener Staatsoper, where he was awarded the title of Kammersänger in 1986. He has taken the stage in all of the world’s major opera houses, and is a frequent guest at the Salzburg, Bayreuth, Verona, Edinburgh and Bregenz Festivals. He sang Hagen at the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival in 2010. As a concert singer, he sings numerous works ranging from Mozart to Pendereck, and from Beethoven to Mahler.

Jürgen SACHER has been a member of the Hamburgische Staatsoper since 1991, where he has taken the stage as Loge and Mime in its production of the Ring. He has sung David (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), the Steersman (Der fliegende Holländer) and Walther von der Vogelweide (Tannhäuser). In addition to his Wagnerian roles, he has also performed in operas by Puccini and Richard Strauss. Sacher has made guest appearances at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, the Theater an der Wien, Milan’s La Scala, the Salzburg Festival, as well as in Brussels, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Braunschweig and Budapest.

Hartmut SCHÖRGHOFER studied interior design in Linz and set design at the Mozarteum University of Salzburg. He has made his name primarily as a set designer, working in locations ranging from Lyon and Dresden to Monte Carlo and Stockholm. He has also designed sets for several Mozart operas: La Finta Giardiniera (Tirol Landestheater and Staatstheater Darmstadt), Don Giovanni (Theater Schwerin), and Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Theater Aachen and Opernhaus Dortmund). His work has also earned great acclaim in Dresden, Graz, Vienna, Ulm, Karlsruhe, Strasbourg, Erfurt and Salzburg. He regularly collaborates at the Oper Leipzig, the Halle City Theatre and the Staatstheater Braunschweig.

Egils SILINS first made a name for himself with numerous competition victories, and then as a member of eminent European opera houses – including the Wiener Staatsoper and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He was the first Latvian singer to perform at Milan’s La Scala (1998) and New York’s Metropolitan Opera (2000), which led to invitations to major festivals. His style is characterised by aristocratic restraint and nobility, while he plays romantic roles with deep passion, and nuances opera’s comic figures with a subtle sense of humour. He enjoys performing song recitals of German and Russian romantic works, and his repertoire also includes oratorios.

Rebekka STANZEL began her career in the Semperoper Dresden as a director’s assistant before she joined the Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and the Staatstheater Nürnberg, where she directed several children’s and chamber operas. She has collaborated with a number of world-famous directors, among them Willy Decker, Konstanze Lauterbach, Andreas Baesler and Robert Lehmeier. In addition to her work at Müpa, she has also directed at such illustrious theatres as Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Dresden Semperoper, and Madrid’s Teatro Real.

Tünde SZABÓKI first pursued her studies in Budapest, and later in Graz.

Between 1994 and 2000, she won prizes at a host of international singing competitions. She sang the role of Agathe in Weber’s Der Freischütz 20 times in Graz and Prague, and is a regular guest at the Styriarte Festival, which is closely linked to Nikolaus Harnoncourt. In 1997, she appeared as a soloist at Jerusalem’s Bernstein Festival and was a guest in Berlin, at the Salzburg and Lucerne Festivals in 2001. She is a regular fixture at the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival.

Iréne THEORIN debuted as a member of Copenhagen’s Royal Danish Opera in the role of Donna Anna in Don Giovanni in 2005. In December of that same year and in the spring of 2006, she sang all three Brünnhilde roles in the Copenhagen production of the Ring. Her first American performances in 2009 saw her sing Brünnhilde both in Washington and at New York’s Metropolitan Opera. She has collaborated with such exceptional conductors as Daniel Barenboim, Bertrand de Billy, Myung-Whun Chung, Christoph Eschenbach, Adam Fischer, Valery Gergiev, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Giuseppe Sinopoli and Franz Welser-Möst.

Éva VÁRHELYI earned a diploma from the Liszt Music Academy in voice pedagogy in 1986, and two years later, after studying under Zsolt Bende, Dénes Gulyás and Balázs Kovalik, completed another as an opera singer.

She later expanded her knowledge at master classes held by Júlia Hamari, László Polgár and Helmuth Rilling. Várhelyi has received awards at several international singing competitions and is a regular fixture at the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival as Siegrune in Die Walküre.

Gábor VIDA graduated as a choreographer from the University of Theatre and Film in Budapest in 2007. He has participated in performances at the National Theatre in Budapest, at the National Theatre Szeged, and at the Jókai Theatre in Komarno (Slovakia), the József Attila Theatre in Budapest, the Gárdonyi Géza Theatre in Eger, the Csokonai Theatre in Debrecen and Nyíregyháza’s Móricz Zsigmond Theatre. He won great acclaim with his standalone choreography, entitled Styx, and is also widely recognised as a dancer.

Stefan VINKE graduated from the Music Academy of Cologne. In 2000, he received the title “the year’s best young opera singer” from the international opera magazine Opernwelt. In the years that followed, he continuously developed his repertoire, which contains a number of Wagnerian roles. He has sung the title roles in Tristan and Isolde, Parsifal and Lohengrin, as well as Siegmund, Erik, Siegfried and Walter von Stolzing. He has performed at the most prestigious German opera houses, as well as at Covent Garden, Milan’s La Scala and the Salzburg and Bayreuth Festivals, in addition to the opera houses of Beijing, Madrid, Paris, Philadelphia and Seattle.

Hartmut WELKER began his career in Aachen and was soon appearing in the world’s leading opera houses. At Milan’s La Scala, he has portrayed Telramund in Lohengrin, Klingsor in Parsifal and Alberich in Siegfried. He made his American debut in Chicago under Claudio Abbado, and appeared in Fidelio at New York’s Metropolitan Opera. He made his Bayreuth debut in 2000 as Kurwenal in Tristan und Isolde and has been a constant fixture at the Festival ever since. In 2002, he performed the role of Alberich for the first time in Dresden, and has played this role for years in the Bayreuth Ring. He is a frequent guest at the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival.

Eszter WIERDL is a soloist with the Hungarian State Opera. She graduated from the Liszt Academy of Music, studying under Éva Andor and Balázs Kovalik, furthering her studies through master classes held by Gundula Janowitz, Ileana Cotrubas, Júlia Hamari, László Polgár and Helmuth Rilling.

In addition to her classical repertoire, she also enjoys singing infrequently performed 20th century and contemporary operatic works. She has appeared at the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival for years.

Martin WINKLER studied under Walter Berry at the University of Vienna.

Since 2009 he has been a member of the Volksoper Wien. He debuted at the Bayreuth Festival as Alberich in 2013. His list of successful Wagnerian performances also includes the role of Klingsor in Parsifal. In recent years he has successfully performed principal roles in operas by Richard Strauss, Berg, Zemlinksy, Ligeti and Shostakovich, and also feels at home in the worlds of Tchaikovsky, Donizetti, Puccini and Weber. Winkler has taken the stage at the Theater an der Wien, the Komische Oper Berlin, the opera houses of Lyon, Stuttgart and Nuremberg, as well as London’s Covent Garden and New York’s Metropolitan Opera.

Gertrúd WITTINGER studied at the Liszt Academy of Music and the Vienna Music College. In 1999, she won first prize at the Rolando Nicolosi Singing Competition in Taranto, Italy. She has performed in Vienna – at both the Volksoper and the Staatsoper – as well as in Debrecen and at the Hungarian State Opera. A 2007 competition victory won her a scholarship from the Budapest Wagner Society. She a regular fixture at the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival.

The Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1943 following an initiative by Ernő Dohnányi and established its international rank and reputation through its numerous concerts both in Hungary and abroad, as well as through CDs and radio recordings. The orchestra has further enhanced the fine reputation of Hungarian music culture in more than 50 countries across four continents. Its balanced sound, flexibility and preservation activities that promote the popularity and recording of contemporary Hungarian music have received international acclaim from critics, guest conductors, soloists and composers. The orchestra has participated in the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival since the start, receiving much acclaim. János Kovács has filled the post of principal conductor since September 2014.

The Hungarian Radio Choir, led by principal chorus director Zoltán Pad, was formed in 1950.

Its repertoire embraces all areas of choral singing, including opera and oratorio. Works by contemporary Hungarian composers are frequently featured in their performances. A frequent guest at prestigious international music festivals, the chorus has appeared at such events in Salzburg and Vienna. The list of famous conductors that the chorus has worked with includes Lamberto Gardelli, Lovro von Matačić, Kurt Masur, Yehudi Menuhin, Giuseppe Patané, Helmuth Rilling and Yuri Simonov.

The Budapest Studio Choir was formed in 1996 with amateur musicians under the leadership of Liszt Prize-winning Kálmán Strausz, who for 16 years was the principal chorus master of the Hungarian Radio Choir. Hungary’s first professional project chorus is assembled for specific productions, giving the chorus master the opportunity to create the ideal sound for the occasion. The composition and size of the chorus always depend on the work to be performed and the requirements of the specific project.
