All Levels - must be 14 years and older TUITION: $140 The objectives of this course is to develop drawing skills through in-class instructions and practice. Students will learn the formal elements of drawing: line, shape, value, texture, and linear perspective. Students will also develop an understanding of composition and format, and develop critiquing skills. Through this process students will learn to achieve line and tone to arrive at an integrated image while working with a variety of media, including, charcoal pencils, colored pencils, and inks. Students will also be required to keep a sketchbook for outside assignments. A supply list will be provided upon registration.

BEGINNING JEWELRY AA106-1

Beginners - must be 18 years and older TUITION: $240 LAB FEE: $70 This course is designed for the beginning student with no previous jewelry making experience. Students will learn basic techniques through demonstrations and projects.

Techniques will include sawing, piercing, texturing, riveting, soldering and bezel setting cabochon stones.

ADVANCED BEGINNING and INTERMEDIATE JEWELRY AA106-2 & AA106-3

Advanced Beginners/Intermediate - must be 18 years and older TUITION: $240 LAB FEE: $70 Advanced Beginners: This course is designed for students who have completed the beginning level jewelry class and are ready to learn a variety of new techniques. Technical demonstrations will focus on basic lost-wax and cuttlefish casting techniques, beginning enameling, surface development including etching, reticulation and fusing, as well as die-forming and hollow construction. Students will have plenty of class time to practice new techniques and make jewelry of their own design incorporating these techniques.

Intermediate: This course is designed for the self-motivated student with intermediate level skills to create projects of their own design, continue to expand skills and get practical advice from a professional metalsmith. Technical demonstrations will depend upon the needs of the students for their individual projects.

COLD-CONNECTED JEWELRY AA106-4 & AA106-5

Beginners must be 18 years and older TUITION: $130 LAB FEE: $50 A good class for beginners or those with some metal-work background who do not like to use a torch. Students will learn to rivet and use other means to cold-connect their jewelry. Projects will include pendants, earrings, bracelets, a ring and handmade hollow metal beads.

MAKING THE CLASSIC CHAIN

AA106-6 & AA106-7 Beginners - must be 18 years and older TUITION: $130 LAB FEE: $50 Chain-making is a great way for people who have no experience in metal-working to jump into jewelry making. Students will learn about wire gauges and tempers, how to order metal wire and jewelry supplies, how to wind and cut jump-rings, how to properly use pliers and other small hand tools. The chains constructed will include the Byzantine, Queen’s, Single and Double Flower and Helm’s chains.

USING PLASTIC AND RESIN IN JEWELRY AA106-8

Advanced Beginners and above - must be 18 years and older TUITION: $140 LAB FEE: $50 This class will explore combining resin and plastic with metal, as well as making jewelry entirely of plastic.

Students will learn to use liquid plastics such as epoxies and casting resins as well as acrylic sheet. Projects will allow students to learn to mix and tint epoxies and pourable casting resin, make molds for casting resins, and learn ways to incorporate resin and plastic into metal jewelry via cold connection. Students will learn to make jewelry entirely of plastic, using acrylic sheet, and learning to laminate, cut, shape and polish.

Beginning jewelry/metal arts experience required.

MIXED MATERIALS JEWELRY AA106-9

Advanced Beginners and above - must be 18 years and older TUITION: $140

LAB FEE: $50 This class will explore ways to incorporate unusual or unexpected materials into metal jewelry. Examples are plastic, resin, epoxy, aluminum, wood, paper, fabric, leather, etc. Students are invited to bring in materials and found objects they would like to incorporate into their jewelry and class sessions will focus on design possibilities to make it work. This is a great opportunity for metals students to learn about cold connection, to explore ways to put color into their metal jewelry and to come up with ways to make their jewelry highly personal by incorporating personal artifacts into their work.

Beginning jewelry/metal arts experience required.

March 19 through April 24 (7 weeks) Lisa Oristian Class limit: 15 During the fall & spring semesters, a three-hour weekly lab is available to adult students currently enrolled in a jewelry course at no extra charge.

This provides students with additional time to work independently on their projects. A minimum of 10 lab times will be provided throughout the semester.

PAINTING TECHNIQUES FOR BEGINNERS AA102-4 & AA102-5

Beginners - must be 18 years and older TUITION: $240 This course provides a structured program designed for beginning students. Projects focusing on composition and design, color mixing and essential painting techniques will be investigated. Acrylic paints are preferred.

A supply list will be provided on the first class.

MULTI-LEVEL PAINTING (ACRYLIC AND OIL PAINT) AA102-1

All levels – must be 18 years or older TUITION: $240 This is a hands-on class that explores painting through practical applications and experiences that relate line, form, texture, and color, while also investigating how these visual relationships relate to the artist’s intentions and the meaning of the work. A supply list will be provided upon registration.

LANDSCAPE PAINTING AA102-8

All levels – must be 18 years or older TUITION: $240 This course will encourage students to work from various sources, including sketches, color studies and photographs in order to create landscape paintings.

Watercolors, acrylics, oils and pastels may be used.

CONVENTION-LESS PAINTING: MIXED MEDIA AA108-1

All levels – must be 18 years or older TUITION: $140 LAB FEE: $50 This studio course will function as an experimental laboratory, and will examine the potential of painting. Since the Mid-Century, many artists who consider themselves painters have pushed the boundaries of the two-dimensional. Robert Rauschenberg said that there was “a new kind of honesty in painting where painters have been very proud of paint and have let it behave openly”. We will look at artists that bridge and blur the distinction of painting and sculpture, with an emphasis on those using unconventional materials for painting. We will explore work by sculptors that “paint” with form/shapes, and painters that compose with unconventional materials and/or invent new ways using paint. Some of the artists we will look at are Louise Nevelson, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, Lee Bontecou as well as more contemporary artists such as Jessica Stockholder, Polly Apfelbaum and Ari Peterson.

The studio component of the class will center on students’ individual work, development and experimentation.

Techniques will be demonstrated to build 3 dimensional substrates in wood using panels and lumber and introduce students to some basic woodworking techniques, integrating found objects onto and into a surface using physical fasteners, and various approaches to assemblage. Painting does not refer to just oils and acrylics any longer! This class will be co-taught by painter Jenna North and sculptor Kim Valdez.

RE-PAINT – PAINTING WITH PAINTING AA108-2

All levels – must be 18 years or older TUITION: $200 LAB FEE: $ 70 So you made a mistake, don’t throw it away! Painters make a lot of slip-ups, and the average laymen may be familiar with the phrase “happy mistake”- sure we make some happy ones, but we also make mistakes that are impossible to remedy. In this class we will find solutions for those past art projects that you just can’t bring yourself to throw away. Exploring possibilities for future works, we will literally deconstruct our fables of the reconstruction.

Participants in this mixed-media Painting course will explore alternatives to having our unresolved, damaged, or otherwise undesirable painting projects from ending up in the landfill. As a class we will learn techniques to successfully pull out areas of interest and re-materialize and incorporate them into current works in progress and/or new projects. Essentially this class aims to offer painters an outlet for their growing art in storage, however these experiments could branch into methods and processes to be used regularly as well as intentionally in future practice. The collage process opens doors to endless possibilities in mixed media, and these will also be explored, exercising several methods of integrating collage components. An individual approach to abstraction, representation and/or conceptual projects are encouraged. We’ll have group discussions about the painting process, presentations of successful painters using these types of techniques, as well as regular constructive critiques on work produced in class.

Prerequisite: Some background in Printmaking and Painting and a desire to experiment.

Exploring and utilizing ancient techniques of both Turkish marbling and Japanese suminagashi, artist Jenna Rose North will lead the class into an experimental and ultimately individual approach to painting on water.

Demonstrations and lectures will be balanced with appropriate studio time to fully explore the possibilities of capturing fluid mediums on paper and other substrates.

It will cover various throwing techniques, functional design and surface treatments. Advanced students may pursue projects of the own choosing with instructional guidance.

You will learn to use several tools for selecting parts of images, and will move, duplicate, and resize images. You will also learn to use layers, and to apply layer effects and filters to create special effects, including lighting and texture effects.

Additionally, you will use painting tools and blending modes to create shading effects, and will perform adjustments to contrast and color balance.

About the Saturday Morning Kids Programs

The School of Art Saturday morning children’s programs are designed to introduce youngsters to art through fun and educational projects in drawing, painting, clay and sculpture media that stimulate imagination and creative expression.

ARTBOX I & II

TUITION: $220 Youngsters attend art classes for the entire morning, 9 to 11:30 a.m., providing them ample time to work on creative projects and to experience several areas of art.

It also means that parents get a full Saturday morning every week to pursue their own interests.

Each ArtBox class is divided into two, seven-week sessions. One group meets with the drawing/painting instructors for the first seven weeks, while the other group attends the clay/sculptural media classes. At mid-semester, the groups exchange so that all students participate in each media.

About the Dance Program

The School of Art provides a broad, communitybased dance program with classes ranging from dance appreciation to a pre-professional curriculum. Classes for children, teens and adults are offered in ballet, jazz, tap and modern dance.

A pre-ballet introduction to dance for younger students covers the basics of movement and music. Fundamentals of ballet and jazz give students the necessary foundation to begin pursuing more complicated and refined elements of dance.

STUDENTS ONLY ADVANCE AT THE INVITATION OF THE FACULTY. DANCERS CAN ANTICPATE STUDYING AT EACH LEVEL FOR ONE TO FOUR YEARS.

CANCELLATION DUE TO WEATHER If classes are cancelled due to inclement weather, it will be announced on the following: TELEVISION STATIONS: WKTV, WUTR RADIO STATIONS: WIBX, WFRG, WLZW, WODZ, WOUR, KISS FM, Mix 102.5 WRCK/WKLL Please refrain from calling the School of Art, as there will be no receptionists on duty to answer the calls MUNSON-WILLIAMS-PROCTOR ARTS INSTITUTE has a policy of non-discrimination, which assures that students are accepted fairly, and without discriminatory regard for sex, race, national origin, color, religion, age or disability. Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute is a not-forprofit educational corporation, which in furtherance of its purposes and objectives, endeavors to publicize the work and achievements of its students, faculty, staff and alumni.

In connection with these efforts the Institute reserves the right to release appropriate information and to take photographs, motion pictures, or videotape of students, faculty, staff and alumni, and their work, and to use and distribute these materials in any form or format in furtherance of the Institute’s purpose and objectives.

MWPAI INSTRUCTORS may, with the approval of the Dean, dismiss from class or refuse enrollment to any attendee who is disruptive or uncooperative or whose skills are advanced beyond the level of instruction of a particular class or section.

REFUNDS: Classes at the School of Art have limited enrollment so instructors have the opportunity to devote individual attention to each student. Refund policy: a full refund of tuition is granted only when the School of Art cancels a class or the Registrar receives formal notification in writing of withdrawal from a student prior to the first scheduled class meeting. Ninety percent refund of tuition is granted when formal notification is received prior to the second scheduled class meeting. Sixty percent refund of tuition is granted when formal notification is received prior to the third scheduled class meeting. If a student withdraws after the third scheduled class, no refund will be granted.

Class fees cannot be prorated for students choosing not to attend all class meetings. If withdrawal is necessary, tuition cannot be applied to another semester. Lab fees are nonrefundable if withdrawal is made after 1st scheduled class.

This refund policy covers withdrawals for any purpose including injury, illness or family emergencies. Refunds take four weeks to process. Refunds are issued in the form of a check, which is mailed directly to the student’s home address as recorded at the School of Art. In the case of credit card payments, refunds are applied directly to the credit card account.
