SALT FIRING WORKSHOPS

Ages 18+ / Intermediate / Veronica Byun Salt firing is embraced by ceramic artists and potters because of the beautiful and unpredictable results that come from a salt-fired kiln. These four-week workshops will explore form, function, aesthetic values, textures, tactile qualities, and surface development of atmospheric firing through salt. All works will be made from start to finish during the workshop.

Learn techniques to make open-face and multi-part plaster molds for slip casting from hand-built forms and found objects. Each student generates cast porcelain pieces that are altered and combined to create ceramic sculptures, allowing students to develop new ideas. Demos focus on incorporating slip casting into hand-building processes. Tuition includes plaster, porcelain slip, clay, and glaze.

Discover different techniques that can be used to create beautiful drawings with artist-grade colored pencils. Colored pencils are portable, lightweight, inexpensive and can create a piece that looks like a painting. In this mini-course, students explore mixing and layering colors, different types of paper, and learn to preserve a finished colored pencil piece. Studio drawings focus on still life subjects like fruit, flowers, and glassware.

Paint dazzling realistic depictions of familiar objects and contemporary foodstuffs through a classical lens. Traditional Dutch still life oil techniques and modern applications are taught to hone individual students skills with shape, color, and texture. In-studio presentations focus on OG 17c Dutch painters, the history of food as an artistic subject, and the meaning of food in contemporary art and pop culture. This is a dynamic class for beginners as well as experienced painters.

Techniques include sawing, piercing, texturing, riveting, chain-making, soldering, and bezel-setting cabochon stones. Learn the rich process of enameling–applying thin decorative glass to a metal surface–for jewelry and metals. Each day offers demos on different techniques and time to practice on sample pieces. Techniques include sifting powdered enamel with stencils and embellishments, using liquid enamels, and learning wetpacking techniques like cloisonné. All tools and some materials provided. INTRO TO CAD/CAM: COMPUTER MODELING FOR 3D PRINTING

The newest technology in jewelry making has come to MWPAI! Learn Rhino 3D modeling software to digitally create prototypes and set up files for 3D printing with fused deposition modeling (FDM), stereolithography (SLA) and selective laser sintering (SLS) technologies. Although focused on jewelry forms, the concepts and skills are relevant to all 3D modeling and printing. Students learn digital design skills and may send class project files to third-party printing companies to purchase final printed objects. Note: Saturday open studios for CAE jewelry students is not available for CAD/CAM students.

Chris received his MFA in visual arts from The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University and his BFA in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Painting CHRIS IRICK received a BFA in metalsmithing from Texas Tech University and an MFA in metals from UMass Dartmouth. She is currently Professor of Metal Arts and the head of the jewelry program at PrattMWP. Her work is included in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Jewelry / Metals

She received her MS in communications design through Pratt Institute focusing in print and typography. Calligraphy / Book Arts JOELLA BURT is a PrattMWP alumni and received her BFA in painting and K-12 teaching certification from SUNY Potsdam. She has exhibited regionally and expanded her digital and traditional painting practice through teaching seminars and offering works for sale locally. Digital Painting VERONICA JUYOUN BYUN was born in Seoul, Korea, received her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI and her BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in Alfred, NY. SANDRA DEVISSER has been an instructor at the School of Art since 1980 and developed the Young Artists Program. She received her BA in social studies from SUNY Albany, her MA from Colgate University, and was awarded a certificate in fine arts from MWPAI. Painting / Adults / Teens MICHAEL GIORDANI graduated from PrattMWP and Pratt Institute with a BFA. He is a Utica transplant, born in New York City and raised on Long Island, NY. He enjoys nothing more than fostering the creative spark in others. Kids ANNETTE GOLDMACHER received her BA in classical studies and German from Colgate University and her MA in museum studies from Syracuse University’s Graduate Program. Art Appreciation NICHOLE HESS is a PrattMWP alumni with a BFA in ceramics from Pratt Institute. She is experienced in wood and salt firing, was a demo thrower for Standard Ceramic Supply, and has worked in a commercial pottery studio in Brooklyn, NY. Ceramics

ANNETTE GURDO has been actively working and exhibiting in Central NY for more than 20 years. Her commissions and work are included in many collections throughout the northeast. She received an AA in fine arts from MWPI/MVCC and a BFA in drawing and painting at the Philadelphia College of Art. Painting / Drawing CHRISTI HARRINGTON is an Associate Professor of Art at MVCC. She received her BFA from the University of Michigan and began studying the figure while abroad in Italy. Christi holds an MFA in sculpture from the New York Academy of Art. Sculpture SARAH TUCKERMAN KILIAN has taught in the Utica City School District since 1990. She is a graduate of William Smith College in Geneva, NY, and received her MS in art education from Syracuse University. Young Artists SOOJIN KIM is a multidisciplinary Korean artist who works in Korea and the U.S. After receiving an MS in electrical engineering, Soojin pursued her MFA at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. Recent awards include the Boit Award for independent studio practice, the Dana Pond Award in painting, and a MASS Moca Artist Residency. She is represented by Gallery BOM, Boston, and Tao Water Gallery, W. Barnstable, MA. Painting / 2018-19 MWPAI Artist in Residence GAVIN LAW is a local videographer and owner of Gavin Law Videography and commercially focused Upstate Film Company. Gavin holds an AA in radio, and TV broadcasting from Herkimer County Community College.

JOSEPH MURPHY is an illustrator who uses atmosphere and light to create dream-like images for projects in book publishing, editorial, and entertainment fields. Joseph received his BFA and MFA in illustration from Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts.

Painting / Illustration CAROLINE VOAGEN NELSON creates animations inspired by American history and fabricated mythologies. Caroline received her BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and MFA in digital art with a focus in animation at Pratt Institute. Her work has been shown at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, Aperture Gallery, the Florida Film Festival, Animasivo, el Festival in Mexico City, and the Museum of the City of New York.

Animation / 2018-19 MWPAI Artist in Residence MEGHAN PAGANO received her MFA in interdisciplinary art from Goddard College. She holds a BFA in photography and art education from the College of Saint Rose and an AA in fine arts and illustration from MVCC. Animation / Young Artists

KYLE PUMILIO received his education from PrattMWP and SUNY Potsdam and is an art instructor in Utica schools. He loves working with diverse students, ceramics, and the three dimensional form. Painting / Drawing SHANNON STOCKBRIDGE received her BFA in sculpture through PrattMWP and graduated from Pratt Institute. Jewelry is her primary medium and she has been creating a wearable collection using the lost-wax casting and alternative materials. Jewelry TARO TAKIZAWA was born and raised in Japan. He received a BFA in 2-D/ printmaking from Central Michigan University and a MFA from Syracuse University in printmaking. He has exhibited his printmaking, vinyl installations, paintings, drawings, and ceramics nationally and internationally. Taro was recently awarded residency at Saltonstall Artists Colony. Printmaking JON TAYLOR is the owner of ENJOINERY, a custom design and fabrication business collaborating with regional to international retail brands, designers, and private clients on fixtures and furniture. In the event of inclement weather or other emergency cancellation, announcements will be made on the following: MWPAI website, School of Art Reception: Automated cancellation message, and MWPAI Social Media.

PLEASE NOTE: We generally do not contact students individually by phone or email for inclement weather cancellations. MWPAI and our instructors make reasonable efforts to reschedule adult classes canceled due to inclement weather or other emergencies however it this not always possible.

KIDS + TEENS: Because of heavy classroom usage between the college program and other CAE classes, we do not offer makeup classes for children and teen classes.

COURSE CHANGES + CANCELLATIONS

Course catalog and class listing must be considered informational and not binding on the Institute. Community Arts Education classes are subject to minimum enrollment guidelines. We make every effort to notify students of canceled classes in a timely fashion. However, courses are sometimes canceled as late as the day of the first class meeting. If your course is canceled, you are contacted and given the option of substituting another course or receiving a full refund. It is extremely important that we have your correct email and phone number. Additionally, in these circumstances, please note that MWPAI is not responsible for supplies purchased prior to the start of classes.

REFUND POLICY

- A pro-rated refund may be given after the second scheduled class, based on last day of attendance and/or date the official withdrawal form is received by the registrar.

- After the third scheduled class, no refund will be granted unless it is a medical emergency accompanied by a doctor’s note.

This refund policy covers withdrawals for any reasons including injury, illness or family emergencies. Refunds of fees take up to four weeks to process and take the form of the original payment method for the canceled course. Checks are mailed directly to the student’s home address. Official Withdrawal Forms may be downloaded from the website or obtained at the School of Art reception desk.
