four-decade legend of jazz piano takes the stage as Concerts in the Court presents Joe Sample 8 p.m. Saturday, September 22 in the Museum of Art.

American pianist and composer Joe Sample is an integral, innovative and bestselling part of jazz history. A founding member of the influential jazz funk combo The Crusaders and a pioneer of contemporary jazz piano, Sample reaches back to the primary sources of jazz and soul music to create his personal interpretations of classics by such esteemed composers as Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, the Gershwins, Al Jolson, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and others. Sample began playing the piano when he was five years old as a student of the late great Curtis Mayo. After more than 20 years with The Crusaders, he now tours the world enjoying a successful solo career and has appeared as a guest on recordings by Miles Davis, B. B. King, Eric Clapton and Steely Dan.

Tickets for this performance and all Concerts in the Court are $26.50 for Members, $31.50 for General admission, and $16.50 for students. The museum opens at 7 p.m. so patrons may view the current exhibitions, socialize and visit the Gift Gallery. Concerts in the Court also feature a cash bar and special gallery talks at intermission. For tickets contact the Performing Arts Ticket Office at 797-0055 or 800-754-0797. Tickets are also available online at www.mwpai.org.
