Great Artists Series Presents The Chieftains Februar y 27 • 7:30 p.m.

M

asters of Definitive Irish Music, the Chieftains with Paddy Moloney and Special Guests bring their award-winning sound to the Great Artists Series 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 27 in the Stanley Theater.

The Chieftains are the world’s most celebrated music ensemble, long recognized for bringing traditional Irish music to the world.

These masters of Erin’s sound uncover the wealth of traditional Irish music that has accumulated over the centuries, making the music their own with a style that is as exhilarating as it is definitive. They are currently celebrating their 50th anniversary by collaborating with old and new friends, reliving past memories and introducing The Chieftains’ historic career to a whole new generation of fans.

Tickets range from $69.50 to $24.50 with student ticket prices ranging from $22.50 to $10.50. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the MWPAI Performing Arts Ticket Office, on the phone at 797-0055 or 800-754-0797, or online at www.mwpai.org. Tickets may also be purchased one hour prior to the performance time at the Stanley Theater.

Art Alive Fun Times at December’s Art Alive

hat better way to kick the mid-winter blues than by attending the 2nd Annual Sweater Ball, presented by the Mohawk Valley Chamber of Commerce. Tickets are $60 per person and include butlered hors d’oeuvres, open beer and wine bar, carving stations by A Moveable Feast, and live music by Gridley Paige. Cash bar will also available. There will be prizes, giveaways, sweater contests and more. A portion of the proceeds to benefit Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute. Second Sunday Guided Tour

David Esterly will read from his new memoir, an account of the year he spent at Hampton Court Palace, near London, replacing a spectacular Grinling Gibbons (1648-1721) woodcarving destroyed by fire in 1986. Mr. Esterly's own highrelief sculptures derive from this seventeenth-century style of carving. At Hampton Court, Esterly's pursuit of the lost mysteries of Gibbons's technique revolutionized his own work. Mr. Esterly’s readings and remarks will illuminate the carvings in the Museum's exhibition, The Art of Subtraction.

Art Story: Every Picture Tells a Story An Introduction to Art for Preschoolers Theme: Winter Thursday, February 7, 10:30 a.m.

Saturday, February 16, 10:30 a.m.

Free and Open to the Public This interactive program offers a preschool introduction to art and visual literacy through picture books and artworks on view in the Museum of Art. Includes a simple take-home craft. A 45-minute program for children ages 3 to 5 and their caregivers.

These programs are offered at a time convenient to teachers.

All teachers will receive a certificate of completion, documenting contact hours, which may be used to pursue professional development credit. Teachers must register in advance by contacting the museum education department at 315-797-0000 ext. 2146 or mgianetti@mwpai.org.

Wednesday, February 27 William Kentridge: Anything is Possible (60 min.)

This film provides a rare, in-depth look at the life and work of the internationally acclaimed South African artist, William Kentridge. Working in a variety of media—including sculpture, drawing, animation, tapestry, film, and opera— Kentridge tackles a broad range of subjects, from cataclysmic events to poignant personal moments.

Your MWPAI membership allows free borrowing from the library’s collection with the presentation of your membership card. The general public is welcome to visit the library and browse the collection. Stepping Back from the “Fiscal Cliff”

A

s Congress took action to avoid the “fiscal cliff” of tax increases and spending cuts at the beginning of 2013, they also made some decisions that benefit philanthropic activities by our donors. In addition to maintaining the tax deductibility of charitable gifts, they reinstated the ability for donors over age 70 ½ to make IRA Charitable Rollover Gifts through 2013.

Donors of that age facing taxable distributions from their IRA in 2013 may choose to have their IRA administrators make that distribution directly to a qualified charity, such as Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute, and avoid the income tax that is normally due when making distributions from an IRA. The total of such gifts from an IRA cannot exceed $100,000 ($200,000 for a couple.) If you think that this method of giving may benefit you, consult your tax advisor or call our Director of Development, Joe Silberlicht, at 315-797-0000 ext. 2297 for more information.

Museum of Art Celebrates Groundbreaking Centennial

I

n February and March, the Museum celebrates a very important anniversary in the history of American art. The groundbreaking 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art, known as the Armory Show (for the Sixty-ninth Infantry Regiment Armory where it was held) attracted thousands of visitors while it was on view in New York City between February and March 1913 (it then traveled to Chicago and Boston, too). It was a landmark event that introduced United States audiences to new art from Europe and included emotionally expressive paintings by Vincent van Gogh, cubist compositions by Picasso, and abstractions by Wassily Kandinsky. In the aftermath of the Armory Show, many American artists experimented with these avant-garde styles.

Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute’s great patron, Edward W. Root, lent drawings by his friend, artist George B. Luks (1867-1933), to the Armory Show and also bought Maurice Prendergast’s painting, Landscape with Figures, from the show.

In 2013 several national museums will celebrate this momentous anniversary, with exhibitions at the New-York Historical Society, New York City, and the Montclair Museum of Art, Montclair, NJ, among others. Career Ambition: I would love to teach art classes to kids with disabilities, like autism and Down’s syndrome. I think art is a great way for them to express themselves and grow as individuals.

Activities on Campus: When I go to the studio to do my work, I love wandering the hallways and other rooms and looking at what everyone else is working on, it's very inspiring.

Favorite Class(es): Though I'm certainly not a fantastic drawer, it's the class where I get to see myself improve the most. Plus there's nothing more relaxing than drawing all day to some chill music.
