CLASSES FOR KIDS

KIDS ART PROGRAM

Kids use art to discover their learning potential, creating and having fun as they challenge their imaginations. In these classes, students experiment with clay, recycled materials and fibers, and drawing and painting to learn about texture, line and color. Classes are taught by dedicated, enthusiastic instructors who respond to a child’s creative spirit. Visits to the MWPAI Museum of Art are encouraged to allow students the opportunity to view works of art for inspiration.

PLEASE NOTE: *Materials are supplied for children’s classes. Please provide a snack for your child each day, at mid-morning, students have a 15-minute supervised snack break. It is recommended that each child bring an old shirt to use as a smock. A map will be included in your registration material so you know where to go for the first class.

ART EXPLORATIONS I

(AGES 4 & 5)

TUITION: $75 MEMBER: $67.50 Students engage in the process of art making through hands-on exploration learning basics in art including cutting, pasting, shapes and colors through collage, sculpture, painting and drawing. Children will enjoy the social interaction of group activities.

Visits to the Museum of Art gives students the opportunity to connect with works of art while learning about famous artists. For a student, the experience of standing inches from masterpieces then going back to the studio to create something of their own creates a lifetime memory.

BEGINNING JEWELRY FOR TEENS

Ages 14 to 17 TUITION: $185/LAB FEE: $45 MEMBER: $166.50/LAB FEE: $45 Demonstrations and lectures include sawing/piercing, soldering, surface development, chain making and bezel setting cabochon stones. Students create jewelry of their own design using these techniques working in non-ferrous metals including copper, brass and silver. Students are required to purchase all metal and some expendable supplies including sandpaper, solder and saw blades, available at the School of Art reception desk. A wide variety of hand tools and equipment including torches for annealing and soldering will be used.

Appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes must be worn during class.

Learn the concept of printing multiples and create a personal print that incorporates more than one technique. Methods taught range from relief to silkscreen, chine colle, collagraph, and drypoint.

COLLEGE PREP PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT For Grades 10, 11 and 12

TUITION: $185/MATERIAL FEE: $45 MEMBER: $166.50/MATERIAL FEE: $45 Students applying to art colleges will need to present a portfolio for evaluation. This evaluation is an important factor in the level of merit scholarship a student receives. This class focuses on building a quality portfolio of artwork, primarily drawing, and also teaches students what to expect in a portfolio review and how best to represent their work.

Students will learn about the elements of narrative in comics through storyboarding, image and compositional development.

MAKE-A-PRINT SATURDAYS (FIRST SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH- SPRING SEMESTER ½ DAY WORKSHOPS)

Spend a Saturday learning the art of the print! Prints are versatile, easy and fun. Learn how to use a press to create multiples of your art, experiment with silkscreen on paper or fabric, marble your own paper, and learn lithography you can do at home. These processes are beautiful on their own and can be combined to create a layered masterpiece. All of the workshops are low-tech, non-toxic and require no previous experience.

TUITION: $45/STUDIO FEE: $25 MEMBER: $41/STUDIO FEE: $25 Paper marbling is a method of floating ink to create a surface design, which can be applied to an absorbent surface, usually paper or fabric. Traditionally its use is for book covers or endpapers in bookbinding and stationary. Each print is a unique monotype and perfect for calligraphers and scrapbookers.

STRETCHING AND PRIMING A CANVAS LIKE THE OLD MASTERS

(2 WEEKENDS/2 DAYS)

TUITION: $150/MATERIAL FEE: $45 MEMBER: $135/MATERIAL FEE: $45 Has the irregular rhythm of canvas weave and loose-warped surface ever ruined your enjoyment of painting? The tension and alignment of a canvas is critical to properly present the artist’s technique.

This class will guide you how to avoid such common mistakes and learn about the old master technique of creating traditional painting surfaces of Belgian linen, rabbit skin glue, and oil based primer, and understand the longevity and conservation of these natural materials.

TUITION: $75 MEMBER: $68 Hands and feet are the most difficult part of drawing a figure. Learn techniques for drawing and painting hands and feet from life and from imagination by focusing on the anatomy of hands and feet and the simplified volumes that help reproduce them in drawings.

ADULT WORKSHOPS MAKING YOUR OWN PAINT AND BINDERS

(AND THE HISTORY OF PIGMENTS)

(1 WEEKEND/2 DAYS)

TUITION: $150/MATERIAL FEE: $45 MEMBER: $135/MATERIAL FEE: $45 This workshop will begin with the synthesis and history of organic and inorganic pigments and their toxicity levels and light fastness.

Discussions will include pigments and their binders, and the technique of creating paints and media. Several non-toxic pigments will be used to create a series of paints including oil, tempera, watercolor and pastels. At the end of the workshop, each participant will have a sample tile of different mediums on a primed surface.

Students will be able to take home the paints and pastels they created.

FIGURE IN CLAY

(1 weekend/2 days) TUITION: $150/MATERIAL FEE: $45 MEMBER: $135/MATERIAL FEE: $45 The impulse to express personal narrative in the ceramic medium is ages old. What differs between traditional styles and contemporary styles is the modern human condition. In this workshop students will reflect on their personal narratives and attempt to communicate in clay, a realization of their personal history. Processes covered: pinching, coiling, carving and slab construction along with the finishing processes using colored slips and glazing.

VARIETY IN PRINTMAKING

Share your artistic vision and learn new skills with our printmaker-inresidence. These workshops introduce simple and flexible techniques for creating works of art, including the newly revealed “mokulitho” technique for printing on plywood. Learn how to transfer images to different surfaces for decoration, artists’ books, or other fine artwork. Techniques taught range from folding your own pop-up cards, to the no-hassle water-based silkscreen monotype.

MOKULITHO

TUITION: $45/STUDIO FEE: $25 MEMBER: $41/STUDIO FEE: $25 Mokulitho is a printmaking process similar to lithography, but without complicated steps or use of acids and harsh solvents. The technique is relatively new, originating in Japan 30 years ago. Because it uses plywood instead of plates or stone, Mokulito is flexible and accessible to beginners.

Novices to professionals use collagraphs to create rich textural affects in their art. The class will create prints using found objects and readily available materials such as cardboard, glue, and fabric.

ADULT JEWELRY/ METALS WORKSHOPS WIRE CROCHETING Prerequisite: No previous crocheting/wire manipulating techniques are

INNOVATING THE CHAIN Prerequisite: Beginning Jewelry TUITION: $210 MATERIAL FEE: $45 MEMBER: $189 MATERIAL FEE: $45

Think beyond the traditional chain and learn chain-making techniques and design using wire and sheet metal. Examine and manipulate line, shape, repetition, pattern, and negative space to innovate and personalize their chains.

Demonstrations and discussions will include jump ring making, wire manipulation, designing and calculating chain designs, linkage systems, cold connections, and surface design. A presentation on chains will be given at the beginning of class and each student should leave at the end of the workshop with a beautiful finished chain or a variety of samples to work with later. EXPLORING PROCESS, BUILDING FORM Prerequisite: No previous experience necessary.

This workshop is suitable for students interested in jewelry and/or sculpture.

Discovering and defining these methods are helpful for creating better works and dealing with the challenges artists face every day. In this workshop students will be introduced to simple methods of idea generation and creation, as well as ways to better understand and articulate how they create. Through hands-on and contemplative exploration, such as three-dimensional “sketching,� source-material collecting, and various writing and hand-on exercises, students will consider their own individual artistic process as they create a vocabulary of unique skills.

PRINTMAKING

For centuries printmaking has given artists the ability to create multiple impressions for artistic and commercial purposes. Artists who love to work with their hands and experiment with various processes find printmaking opens the door to many creative discoveries. Through silkscreen, intaglio, lithography, woodblock, or monoprints, artists have utilized printmaking to make cards, books, shirts or affect any object that can have an image applied to it. Our modern non-toxic printmaking studio and creative faculty will give you the tools and information you need to take your art to the masses.

INTRODUCTION TO PRINTMAKING: MAKE AN IMPRESSION

Beginning Level TUITION: $140/LAB FEE: $35 MEMBER: $126/LAB FEE: $35 Find out why various methods of printmaking have sparked the imagination of artists from Rembrandt and Durer, to Picasso and Warhol, and artists working today. Experiment with different printmaking techniques such as collagraph, relief, and monotype and revel in the enjoyment of unveiling the mysteries of the surface you prepared when it is impressed upon a page.

BEGINNING DRAWING Beginning Level TUITION: $140 MEMBER: $126 From the time of cave paintings to now, drawing remains the most intuitive method of how humans communicate with one another. Working from observation, students develop their skills as drafts-persons through line, mark, value, texture, and most important of all, personal expression.

CLASSES FOR ADULTS LIFE DRAWING All levels TUITION: $140/MODEL FEE: $30 MEMBER: $126/MODEL FEE: $30 The direct analysis of the human form in its complexity and translating that interaction to paper is critical to an artist. Gesture drawing, contour drawing and other methods of recording a direct response to the figure are the foundation of this class. A nude model will be used.

This course emphasizes the interrelationship within the figure through painting. Drawing will remain an option, but with one long pose each evening. A nude model will be used.

ANCIENT TECHNIQUES: ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPTS

All levels Must be 18 years and older TUITION: $140/MATERIAL FEE: $35 MEMBER: $126/MATERIAL FEE: $35 The class will focus on the history and techniques of creating an Illuminated Manuscript. An Illuminated Manuscript is a page of text or poetry that is substituted with ornate decoration in paint and silver or gold leafing. Frequently painted with a single haired brush, these miniature paintings rival the most complex paintings.

Illuminated Manuscripts are made on parchment- most commonly made of calf, goat or sheep skin. Creating egg tempera paints and ancient binders will be discussed.

Students will explore the use of traditional parchment and gilding techniques to create an authentic illuminated manuscript.

Learn about quilting patterns and how to cut and prepare your material. Some sewing machines are available, but students are encouraged to bring their own if possible.

MEMBER: $126/LAB FEE: $35 Outfitting a studio for making metal jewelry can be a daunting and expensive proposition, but there are many jewelry techniques that can be pursued in a small home studio with minimal equipment. Explore techniques in bead jewelry making and metal jewelry making that lend themselves to home studios. Techniques include wire clasps and findings, knotting beads, making chain from jump rings and handmade wire links, piercing with a jeweler’s saw, using cold-connections to join metal or produce non-soldered settings for cabochon stones. Information about tools, equipment and raw materials will be included with interactive design discussion. No prior jewelry making experience is required.

In this class design ideas are explored so students can construct their very personal pieces of jewelry to showcase their precious objects. Classes will focus on consideration of design and selecting materials that best allow the personal object to be worn as jewelry. No prior jewelry making experience is required.

The processes of handbuilding, especially utilizing slabs for tile patterning and press molding for multiple repetitive pattern making, will be the primary modes of construction. JEWELRY/METALS

Our modern studio allows students to learn a wide variety of jewelry making techniques by providing all necessary hand tools and equipment. Students are required to purchase all metal needed and some expendable supplies including sandpaper solder and saw blades, available at the School of Art reception desk.

Adult students enrolled in 6 week jewelry classes only can also take advantage of three-hour Saturday labs to continue working on their projects independently. There is no additional fee to attend these labs. There will be at least 10 labs throughout the semester and a schedule will be announced during the first week of class.

BEGINNING JEWELRY Prerequisite: None

The School of Art provides a broad, community-based dance program with classes ranging from dance appreciation to a pre-professional curriculum. Classes for children, teens and adults are offered in ballet, jazz, tap and modern dance. A pre-ballet introduction to dance for younger students covers the basics of movement and music. Fundamentals of ballet and jazz give students the necessary foundation to begin pursuing more complicated and refined elements of dance.

REFUND POLICY:

• A full refund of tuition and lab fee will be granted for Community Arts Education classes or workshops when a class is canceled or the Office of the Registrar receives an official withdrawal form from a student prior to the first scheduled class meeting.

• After the start of Community Arts Education classes and workshops pro-rated tuition and lab fee will be refunded based off of the last day of attendance and/or date the official withdrawal form is received by the registrar.

• If a student withdraws after the third scheduled class, no refund will be granted, unless it is a medical emergency accompanied by a doctor’s note.

• Registration fees are not refundable.

• This refund policy covers withdrawals for any reasons including injury, illness or family emergencies.

Refunds take four weeks to process. Refunds are issued in the form of a check, which is mailed directly to the student’s home address.
