KIDS ART PROGRAM

Kids can use art to discover their learning potential, creating and having fun as they challenge their imaginations. In this program, students experiment with clay, recycled materials and fibers to learn about texture, line and color as they develop confidence and skills, make friends, and become inspired by art. Classes are held in the School of Art studios and are taught by dedicated, enthusiastic instructors who respond to a child’s creative spirit.

PLEASE NOTE: MINI-MONET: Students in the first session that meets 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. will meet in the S/A Gallery, the second session that meets from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. will meet in classroom SC1 located in the Student Center (located on the corner of State and Kirkland Streets) *Materials are supplied for children’s classes. Please provide a snack for your child each day. It is recommended that each child bring to class an old shirt to use as a smock.*

MINI MONET (AGES 4 & 5)

TUITION: $150 MEMBER: $135 Students learn basics in art including cutting, pasting, shapes and colors through collage, sculpture, painting and drawing. This class will also help children with social interaction through group activities.

Due to the same lesson plan each session, children may only enroll in ONE session each semester.

ARTBOX ARTBOX is divided into two classes. One class works for

seven weeks in painting and drawing, while the other class works in clay and sculptural media. At the end of the first seven weeks, October 26, the students in painting and drawing switch to clay and sculptural media and those in clay and sculptural media during will switch to painting and drawing.

At mid-morning, students have a 15-minute supervised snack break. (Please provide a snack for your child each day).

BEGINNING YOUNG ARTISTS JEWELRY FOR TEENS DRAWING AND Ages 14 to 17 PAINTING TUITION: $185/LAB FEE: $45 Ages 13 to 17 MEMBER: $166.50/LAB FEE: $45 Demonstrations and lectures include sawing/piercing, soldering, surface development, chain making and bezel setting cabochon stones. Students create jewelry of their own design using these techniques working in nonferrous metals including copper, brass and silver. Students are required to purchase all metal and some expendable supplies including sandpaper, solder and saw blades, available at the School of Art reception desk. Students will be required to use a wide variety of equipment including torches. Appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes must be worn during class.

Projects will be mostly open-ended, focusing on art and design, to allow students to explore interactive objects, kinetic sculpture, interface design, and robotics. Students learn the formal elements of drawing: line, shape, value, texture, and linear perspective while working with a variety of media, including charcoal pencils, colored pencils, and inks.

BOOKMAKING AND THE PRINT Ages 13 to 17 (must be 13 by first class)

Create your own handmade books with little or no writing involved. This class introduces creating practical and artistic books by focusing on incorporating printmaking techniques. Learn different types of bookmaking from the simple accordion fold to more complex steps like pop-ups, Japanese stab binding and other hard-bound books. Demonstrations included in this class will range from paper creation and decorating, to how to include imagery with tools including embossing, monotype, and letterpress. Learn to look at ways to reuse household materials to create books and journals.

Students work at their own pace using pre-cut strips and a choice of quilt patterns. Students are asked to bring their own sewing machines and machines will also be available. OR ADULTS JEWELRY EXPLORING FOR A SMALL STUDIO COLD-CONNECTIONS TUITION: $140/LAB FEE: $35 IN JEWELRY MEMBER: $126/LAB FEE: $35 TUITION: $140/LAB FEE: $35 Outfitting a studio for making metal jewelry can be a daunting and expensive proposition, but there are many jewelry techniques that can be pursued in a small home studio with minimal equipment. In this course, techniques in bead jewelry making and metal jewelry making that lend themselves to home studios will be explored. Techniques include wire clasps and findings, knotting beads, making chain from jump rings and handmade wire links, piercing with a jeweler’s saw, using cold-connections to join metal or produce non-soldered settings for cabochon stones.

Information about tools, equipment and raw materials will be included with interactive design discussion. No prior jewelry making experience is required.

MEMBER: $126/LAB FEE: $35 Students explore making metal jewelry without the use of a torch. Techniques will include learning various kinds of rivets, tabs and staples, alternative prong settings and using wire to make simple wrap settings for rough stones and other objects. Proper tools and their usage, information on raw materials and suppliers, texture and design will be explored. No prior jewelry making experience is required.

Must be 18 years and older TUITION: $275 MEMBER: $247.50 This class explores painting through practical applications and experiences that relate line, form, texture, and color while also investigating how these visual relationships relate to the artist’s intentions and meaning of the work.

The projects will have some flexibility to accommodate beginners and experienced painters. Students interested in an independent study structure will be accommodated. The instructor will help each student with individual problem solving along with brief lectures and critiques for the class as a group.

Aspects of creative metalworking will be discussed, including forming, cold connections and finishing. Concepts on scale, kinetics and design will also be discussed to understand limits of material.

Students transform found shapes, images or objects, utilizing cultural information and contemporary art.

Our modern studio allows students to learn a wide variety of jewelry making techniques by providing all necessary hand tools and equipment. Students are required to purchase all metal needed and some expendable supplies including sandpaper, solder and saw blades, available at the School of Art reception desk. Students can also take advantage of three-hour CAE labs to continue working on their projects independently. There is no additional fee to attend these labs.

There will be at least 10 labs throughout the semester and a schedule will be announced during the first week of class.

BEGINNING JEWELRY INTERMEDIATE AND TUITION: $275/LAB FEE: $70 ADVANCED JEWELRY MEMBER: $247.50/LAB FEE: $70 Prerequisite: Beginning Jewelry Students learn basic techniques through demonstrations and projects. Techniques include sawing, piercing, texturing, riveting, soldering and bezel setting cabochon stones. Technical demonstrations include working with non-traditional materials including plastic, resin and wood as well as etching and lost wax and cuttlefish casting. Students practice new techniques and make jewelry of their own design.

WORKS STRETCHING PLASTER MOLD MAKING & SLIP AND PRIMING A CANVAS LIKE THE OLD CASTING IN CLAY (1 weekend/2 days) MASTERS Must be 18 years and older

Must be 18 years or older TUITION: $150 MATERIAL FEE: $45 MEMBER: $135 MATERIAL FEE: $45 This workshop will begin with a discussion on the historic method of preparing a canvas for oil painting then explore the longevity and conservation of the materials as compared to other media. Students will learn about the old master technique of creating painting surfaces through creating their own stretched canvases using belgian linen, rabbit skin glue and oil-based primer.

MAKING YOUR OWN PAINT AND BINDERS

(and the history of pigments)

Must be 18 years and older TUITION: $150 MATERIAL FEE: $45 MEMBER: $135 MATERIAL FEE: $45 This workshop will begin with the synthesis and history of organic and inorganic pigments and their toxicity levels and light fastness. Discussions will include what pigments and their binders, and the technique of creating paints and media.

Several non-toxic pigments will be used to create a series of paints including oil, tempera, watercolor and pastels. At the end of the workshop, each participant will have a sample tile of different mediums on a primed surface. Students will be able to take home the paints and pastels they created.

Saturday, November 16 and Sunday, November 17 Daria Souvorova, Artist-in-Residence Class Limit: 12 WK102-2

TUITION: $150 MATERIAL FEE: $45 MEMBER: $135 MATERIAL FEE: $45 In this two-day workshop students use slip casting to make one-part open-face and two-part plaster and ceramic molds.

Students will learn to produce modular units in clay to create plaster molds from found objects as prototypes and how to measure and mix correct amounts of plaster.

Spend a Saturday learning the art of the print! Prints are flexible, versatile, easy and fun. Learn how to use a press to create multiples of your art, experiment with the fluidity of a monotype, or show off a book filled with your own paper.

These processes can be beautiful on their own or combined to create a layered masterpiece. All of the workshops are low-tech, non-toxic and no experience required. These printmaking activities are suitable for ages 12 to adult.

SHOPS VARIETY IN PRINTMAKING

Adult Workshops

Share your artistic vision and learn new skills with the printmaker-in-residence. These workshops will introduce students to simple and flexible techniques for creating works of art, including the newly revealed “mokulitho” technique for printing on plywood. Learn how to transfer images to different surfaces for decoration, artists’ books, or other fine artwork. Techniques taught range from folding your own pop-up cards, to the no-hassle water-based silkscreen monotype.

About the

dance Program

The School of Art provides a broad, community-based dance program with classes ranging from dance appreciation to a pre-professional curriculum. Classes for children, teens and adults are offered in ballet, jazz, tap and modern dance. A pre-ballet introduction to dance for younger students covers the basics of movement and music.

Fundamentals of ballet and jazz give students the necessary foundation to begin pursuing more complicated and refined elements of dance.

All ballet students in Levels 2 and above are invited to perform in the timeless classic “The Nutcracker”. Participation is not required, however, preparations for the performances takes place during class. Additional rehearsals will be added as needed.

MAKEUP CLASSES

We do not offer makeup classes for children’s classes and teen classes, it is not an option with classroom usage and space designation between the college program and other CAE classes.

MWPAI INSTRUCTORS may, with the approval of the Dean,

dismiss from class or refuse enrollment to any attendee who is disruptive or uncooperative or whose skills are advanced beyond the level of instruction of a particular class or section.

REFUND POLICY:

• A full refund of tuition and lab fee will be granted for Community Arts Education classes or workshops when a class is canceled or the Office of the Registrar receives an official withdrawal form from a student prior to the first scheduled class meeting.

• After the start of Community Arts Education classes and workshops pro-rated tuition and lab fee will be refunded based off of the last day of attendance and/or date the official withdrawal form is received by the registrar.

• If a student withdraws after the third scheduled class, no refund will be granted, unless it is a medical emergency accompanied by a doctor’s note.

• Registration fees are not refundable.

• This refund policy covers withdrawals for any reasons including injury, illness or family emergencies.

Refunds take four weeks to process. Refunds are issued in the form of a check, which is mailed directly to the student’s home address.

In case of credit card payment, refunds are applied directly to the credit card account. * Official Cause Withdrawal Forms can be found on-line www. mwpai.org or at the School of Art reception desk.
