Robert Indiana from A to Z: The Alphabet and the Icons October 19 thr ough Januar y 5

A

n exhibition celebrating the career of Robert Indiana (b. 1928), will debut at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute Museum of Art October 19.

Robert Indiana from A to Z: The Alphabet and the Icons spans Indiana’s artistic career and features more than 75 works in all media including his icons LOVE, HOPE, and EAT. The exhibition is something of a homecoming for the artist, who, in 1947, took evening classes at Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute while he was stationed in Rome, NY, serving in the United States Air Force.

Robert Indiana was born in New Castle, Indiana, in 1928, as Robert Clark. He moved to New York City in the 1950s and by the early 1960s had developed a personal artistic style of colorful, geometric form that was inspired by popular culture—stencils and urban signs in particular. In 1965, when the Museum of Modern Art, in New York City, invited Indiana to design a holiday card, he created the iconic LOVE image, a timely message of good will in an era wracked by violence. Examples of this powerful hallmark of Pop Art will be included in The Alphabet and the Icons, along with his latest series, The Alphabet, which is the culmination of the 85-yearold artist’s journey using text as image. The exhibition, on view through January 5, 2014, is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalog.

Join Museum staff on November 2 and 3, 2013, as MWPAI begins a new and exciting travel program. Enjoy an art-filled weekend seeing some of the best American paintings created over the last two centuries. Celebrate MWPAI's participation in the New-York Historical Society's exhibition, The Armory Show at 100: Modern Art and Revolution, which showcases three works from the MWPAI collection.

On the way to New York City, we will stop to visit Thomas Cole's house, Cedar Grove, with its wonderful collections. Dr. Paul Schweizer, Museum Director Emeritus, will engage us in a talk about Cole, the artist of the Museum's renowned series The Voyage of Life, on the luxury coach. (Lunch included.)

Then we head to New York City. After checking in at the newly renovated and trendy NYLO Hotel (where we will be treated to free drinks and to free WiFi in our rooms), we'll have an exclusive tour of a renowned, private 19th-century fine and decorative arts collection in the landmark building, The Dakota. For dinner, choose from a large variety of fascinating Upper West Side restaurants.

On Sunday we will have a private tour of the exhibition The Armory Show at 100 at the New-York Historical Society, This exhibition includes works

by Duchamp, Matisse, Picasso, Cézanne, Gauguin, and Van Gogh. After lunch (provided), we will board the bus to head home, stopping at the gloriously positioned Olana, home of Frederick Church, high above the Hudson, for a tour, tea and snacks.

Draw from objects in the galleries; participate in a project with artist-in-residence Daria Souvorova; draw the movement of dancers, even learn to draw a ‘square cat’ with local children’s book author Elizabeth Schoonmaker. Become a Docent and Give Art Your Personal Touch

I

f you enjoy talking about art and the Museum, you are a perfect candidate for the MWPAI docent program. Applications are now being accepted for the docent training program beginning this fall. Likely candidates will have an enthusiastic and friendly attitude, the ability to communicate effectively with groups, a strong interest in art, and available time for training and presentation of tours. It is not necessary to have prior knowledge of art history, public speaking experience, or teaching experience.

The thorough training program teaches presentation skills, general art history background, and information on the museum’s collection and special exhibitions. The training is broadbased and offers opportunities for new friendships, continued personal growth, and learning techniques to engage museum visitors. Be prepared to expand your understanding of art and to be challenged by new ideas. The docent program is a productive way to invest your volunteer time while sharing your love of the arts with others. Utica Native Celebrates MWPAI Traditions at Art Alive Born and raised in Utica, John Pladocostante moved to Plano, Texas, about six years ago to begin a career teaching culinary arts.

He moved across the country, but he took two strong Utica traditions with him—art and food. While John misses MWPAI’s renowned collection, he is never too far from the Utica culinary traditions that influenced him. John operates Femia Italian Foods (https://squareup.com/market/femia-italianfoods), which specializes in hand-made Italian food and desserts.

On his frequent trips home, John often stops by the Museum of Art to see new exhibitions and visit his favorite paintings. While here last year, John enjoyed the Art Alive family day so much that this year he has donated some of his gourmet cookies as part of the Columbus Day Art Alive fun.

Come and taste John’s creations and visit some of your old friends hanging on the walls in the Museum of Art.

PrattMWP Collaboration Creates Two Exhibitions

C

ollaboration between MWPAI and the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees has culminated in two exhibitions premiering this month.

UNSPOKEN - VISUAL & CULTURAL LITERACY, featuring works by Ralph Brancaccio, monoprints; Xia Gao, fiber/textiles, installation and printmaking; and Katie Vota, cut cotton paper work inspired by Andean textiles, is on view in the School of Art Gallery October 16 through November 8 and is presented in conjunction with the UNSPOKEN human rights festival.

UNSPOKEN is an annual human rights forum that combines film, art, music, and a conference into one festival. The theme of the show will be connected to the literacy track with a focus on an exploration of cultural literacy through various visual forms.

An opening reception will be held 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, October 18 in the School of Art Gallery. An Artist Talk by Ralph Branccacio will be held 4:15 p.m. in the Gallery and a video Artist Talk by Katie Vota will be held 5 p.m. in the Museum of Art Auditorium. Born Free and Equal: Refugee Portraits and Paintings featuring works by PrattMWP College of Art & Design Illustration II students will be on view in the Gannett Gallery in Kunsela Hall at SUNYIT October 7 through 21.

Last fall the students formed a partnership with the MVRCR with the program “Our Neighbors.� The project examined the ways healing and resettlement happen through community support specifically through dance, music and art.

Charcoal drawings created by the refugees and Illustration students evolved into photographs and portrait paintings by students.

A selection of these paintings will be on view.

Spectacular Comedic Juggling Featured in a Special For Kids and Families Event

T

he 4D Comedy Juggling antics of Mark Nizer will be the highlight of a special Art Alive Columbus Day edition of the For Kids and Families series 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday, October 14 in the Museum of Art Auditorium.

With his original comedy, world-class juggling, movement, music and technology, Nizer has changed the way people view the world. The impossible is possible and the improbable is probable, whether Mark is juggling laser beams at 1000 rpms, or five ping pong balls being thrown 20 feet in the air using only his mouth; or even juggling a burning propane tank, a running electric carving knife and a 16-pound bowling ball.

Since winning the International Juggling Championship Nizer has taken his one-man show to thousands of venues around the world, including two gala performances at the world famous Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, The Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. His invention of new juggling tricks and juggling technologies, combined with his rapier wit, has distinguished him as “nothing less than brilliant.”

Admission to this event is $8 for MWPAI Members and $10 for General admission. Flexible subscriptions are also available.
